Neste último sábado também ocorreu mais um evento do UFC, o de número 106, que contava com o main event entre o Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar vs. Shane Carwin, porém os dois não pôde comparecer, então o combate principal foi entre Tito Ortiz vs. Griffin, que se encontraram no óctogono pela segunda vez, sendo que desta feita, Griffin levou a melhor. Outro destaque vai para o irmão de Minotauro, Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, que venceu outro brasileiro, Luiz Cane, por K.O., sendo que ganhou como o “K.O. da noite”.

WWE Survivor Series 2009

Ocorreu neste último domingo um dos eventos de Wrestling mais esperados do fim de ano, o WWE Survivor Series, que além das tradicionais Elimination Tag Team Matches, foi palco de duas Triple Threat Matches pelos títulos maiores da empresa. Quanto ao show, The Undertaker reteu seu título após fazer Big Show desistir frente ao irreversível Hell’s Gate. Já o WWE Championship também não mudou de ombros, mas Shawn Michaels acabou por trair Triple H acertando-o com seu finisher (Sweet Chin Music). Este foi o último grande PPV da WWE deste ano!

Wii pay-per-view programming introduced in Japan

Not only are we still waiting for the TV Guide Channel that Japanese Wii users have been indulging in for the better part of two years, but now Variety is reporting that Nintendo has teamed up with a dozen corporate partners to tease us with a Japanese pay-per-view service for the console. Premiering last Saturday, Wii no Ma (Wii’s Room) currently has 120 titles, including episodes of Sesame Street and Pocket Monsters, available for prices ranging from ¥30 – ¥500 ($.35 – $5.63). According to Variety, titles can also be viewed on your Nintendo DSi handheld, a device known for its sonority and large, appealing display. No word yet on when we can enjoy a Stateside version, but we’ll let you know as soon as we hear something. In the meantime, there’s always PlayOn.

Se ne sta davanti alla parete dei tv da piccolo polliciaggio. Aria sfaccendata, mani in tasca, le immagini che scorrono l’hanno impallinato.

Gli chiedo se ha bisogno di aiuto. La testa affollata di capelli bianchi inizia a roteare e il vecchio si sveglia di soprassalto. Mi risponde di sì, poi no, poi non capisco più niente perché una folata di sambuca gli esce dalla bocca e mi stona. D’un tratto mi pare d’essere in un rifugio di alpinisti col catarro.

Vuole un tv, ma fa confusione tra le dimensioni. Apre e chiude le mani per mostrarmi la grandezza, scambia un 40” per un 26”.
- Il 32” mi va bene, lo voglio con la promozione per la tv a pagamento! -, poi però afferra un 26 pollici.
Sono confuso quanto lui. Gli chiedo dove deve metterlo, a che distanza deve vederlo.
Si blocca, è di nuovo impallinato davanti allo schermo. Vorrebbe sorbirsi un’altra sambuca.
Mi guarda con occhioni grandi – Voglio la tv a pagamento -, agita forte il palmo della mano avanti e dietro, – perché lì sgnaffano, devo vedere i canali dove sgnaffano!
- Ah sì? Io non ho la tv a pagamento, non saprei dirle.
- Sì sì, sul canale 140 sgnaffano di brutto!

Gli diedi il più piccolo, un 19”. Con un tv più grande avrebbe avuto gravi problemi alla vista.

Thursday Morning Cupcheck - Belichick: Moron or Imbecile?

Top of the morning, hockey fans! Here’s hoping the Stars‘ loss to the Phoenix Tippetts didn’t drive you to an early grave; indeed, when the Stars surrendered a goal in the first and last minutes of the second period in that game, a wave of nostalgia for the Tippett Regime swept over me like a bunch of trains and skyscrapers, and I started crying –although it may have been because I was chopping onions and listening to Morrissey records at the time. Ah, Tipp, we’ll miss those competent-for-57-minutes games…. or will we?

Last week we delved deeply into the dark depths of depravity –i.e., the NFL– with my Unfounded 4th-and-99 Insanity Theory. This week, I was planning on railing incoherently on the Stars in all-caps (FIRE NEAL HE SUX), but in lieu of last night’s impressive road victory over the surging Detroit Red Wings, it’s come to many observers’ attention that we may, finally, have every 600-level fan’s dream. No, not a pay-per-view zero-G Ice Girls honey-wrestling battle royale (not yet), but the one thing that’s eluded fans of all but a handful of teams over the past decade: a Goalie Controversy.

After Alex Auld stoned the once-potent Detroit attack (including ending their incredible run of 50% powerplay effectiveness in recent games) –and considering Turco’s lifelong troubles winning there– it may be time to consider giving him a slight increase in ice time, somewhere in the range of 73-77 games’ worth. To discuss this intelligently, I’ve brought a panel of professional experts –Andy Moog, Eddie Belfour, Mike Ditka, Vladislav Tretiak, Ken Dryden, Stephen Hawking and Darryl Reaugh– to weigh the possibilities of a goalie change in net for the Dallas Stars.

Me: Gentlemen, thanks for coming.

Professional Experts: (everyone jibber-jabbers at once)

Me: So, gentlemen, do the Stars have a ‘goalie controversy’?

Professional Experts: Nope.

(three minutes of awkward silence)

So that’s that then. More to the point, the sports world is all abuzz about something marginally related to hockey: New England Patriots Czar Bill Belichick’s decision to “go for it” on 4th-and-2 from his own 28 yard line in the final minutes against the Colts. As some of you may have heard, the move backfired, the Colts got the ball and drove down easily for the game-winning touchdown. As some of the rest of you may have heard, a three-time Superbowl-winning coach is now the Schmuck of the Ages, the greatest moron since sliced bread, a hobo-lookalike dumber than a bag of dildos.

Ahhh, pundits… is there anything they don’t know? As I’ve railed incessantly since the beginning of this column 137 weeks ago, You Play to Win the Game. The media reaction to Baffled Bumpkin Belichick’s Bupkus reminds me of my high school buddy Chris –now a high-priced lawyer– who had a fool-proof strategy when he played me in Axis & Allies. His plan was always the same: pick the Axis, build up your forces until they’re impregnable, and never attack. My strategy: throw everything I had minus one infantry at him from turn 1. Guess who won 100% of the time? Clue: it was me and my idiotic strategy.

Belichick consumes six cans of this before every game for strength, inspiration

Point being, when you’re playing a game, go for the win. There’s no Special Prize for Who Keeps the Most Troops (although the Lady Byng Trophy is pretty much exactly that). Your offense had gained 450 yards up to that point, averaged 6.7 yards per play, and you need 2 yards –two yards– to win the game. Punt it to Peyton Manning, and depending on the punt return, he now has two full minutes to drive 60 yards. Manning just drove longer than that in less time –do these pundits really think Manning is some sort of unknown commodity? The guy will win the game if given two full minutes and the ball. Period. Put some faith in your offense –you know, the part of the game that you actually control– and get two yards.

Of course, lining up five-wide with an empty backfield and throwing to the guy least likely to make the first down was another matter. But the decision to go for it was solid; punt there, and you avoid blame but lose the game.

Same mentality should be applied to the NHL: play to win, don’t play ‘not to lose’. This is why Tippett is cleaning scorpions out of his skates every morning and Marc Crawford is coaching a Cup-caliber roster in one of hockey’s big-revenue markets. Crawford, for all his faults, sends his guys in waves at the enemy gates, and would rather they score than hang back, play the prevent defense/trap and hope for the best. Pshaw. Hockey is a game: go for the win! You’ve got nothing to lose but your career and your health!

TNA Wrestling has teamed up with Victory Records‘ own OTEP for the highly anticipated “Final Resolution” pay-per-view special. OTEP’s single “Smash The Control Machine” will be featured as the theme music for this event, broadcasting Sunday, December 20 live and exclusively on pay-per-view from Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida.

“Final Resolution” will feature TNA Wresting favorites such as AJ Styles, Kurt Angle, Bobby Lashley, Mick Foley, Marr Morgan, Team 3D, and many others, along with a “Feast or Fired” match where someone from TNA Wresting will be fired.

Agora o reality show rural da TV Record poderá ser acompanhado durante 24 horas pelo Pay Per View.

Pela operadora TVA, o sinal virá pelo canal 115 e, na Telefônica TV Digital, pelo 767. O serviço de Pay Per View estará disponível para assinantes da TVA Digital nas cidades de São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Curitiba e Porto Alegre, e na área de cobertura da Telefônica TV Digital, compreendida pelo interior e litoral paulista.

Okay, I’m trying to merge and reconcile three lists:

List A. Titles from our ILS that are targeted as part of the PPV effort

List B. Records from our link-resolver

List C. The title list provided by the publisher

I’ve done preliminary matching from List A to List B, noting problems along the way. Some titles are not listed in our link-resolver; some titles in the link-resolver are not listed in our ILS. Some are listed in one or the other, but do not “point” to the same resource provider. A new list was made of ALL titles, with each line reflecting if it is or is not in our ILS, SFX, etc. and who it is coming through (if not through our targeted publisher).

Now I’m working to reconcile the Publisher List (List C.) to the new list above. I found matches for most of the titles on the list, but hundreds did not match. For those, I’m further checking to see if the titles are in any vendor lists, or are somehow disguised (by title problems) or are in other formats.

I hope to produce a single consolidated list of all titles from each source, along with decision-point info (such as whether or not the title was previously part of a package, if some problem should be resolved, etc.). From this consolidated list, I should be able to draw out those titles that will be Pay-Per-View. There will be two classes of PPV, so I should be able to use the consolidated list to make that distinction. If that goes well, I should be able to run some macros against the data to make the changes on our records for PPV.

Okay, I see I didn’t explain that very well. Perhaps I’ll try again later.

Cloudy With NO Chance of Meatballs for $24.95

Someone over at Sony must be watching too many 3 Stooges episodes late at night to think up a promotion like this.

What a terrible value for consumers. I guess their DVD outlets complained so instead of changing their thinking they upped the 24hr. ‘rental’ price. Yes, that’s right. If you’ve got a Sony Bravia TV you too can rent ‘Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs’ for the incredibly fair price of $ 24.95 for a 24 hour term. Don’t everyone rush at once. And, those renters will be proud to know that they got to see the film BEFORE their friends got it on DVD….ooooohhh. Sony thinks that there’s a rush to see THIS film 28 days before you can see it or buy it on DVD (Jan 4th, 2010) for less than $24.95 and own the plastic disc and box? I feel really sorry for the suckers who rent it on Jan. 3rd, 2010 the day before its DVD release. If they wait just 24 more hours they can OWN it for less.

Sony, why not offer consumers something of value? Netflix list of 20 Sony films for free? 3-6 month pass to EpixHD online? Something on iTunes? Anything? This is ridiculous.
