PBS LearningMedia recently announced that select digital content from Annenberg Learner, part of the Annenberg Foundation, has been added to its digital media service offered free to all teachers, students and families nationwide. These new resources in subjects including American history, literacy, STEM and the arts join nearly 20,000 digital assets from PBS as well as organizations such as NASA, the Library of Congress, and the National Archives.

Currently on PBS LearningMedia an Interactive Science Party keeps science skills sharp through the summer with true investigations. Interactives such as the following let students experiment, manipulate, and learn through play:

Amusement Parks Physics (Grades 9-12): How do physics laws affect amusement park ride design? Students have a chance to find out by designing their own roller coaster in this interactive from Annenberg Learner.

Build-A-Fish (Grades 6-8): In this interactive activity, students design a fish that has the right adaptations, or traits, to help it survive in a reef environment. They choose a body, mouth, and color/pattern, then release their fish into the ocean reef to search for food and evade predators, steering it around the reef to see how well it survives with the traits they gave it.

Climate Change Challenge (Grades 6-8): Students use video clips and an interactive game to become knowledgeable about the effects of our choices on the environment. They complete training modules and become certified in the carbon cycle, the water cycle, human impact, nature’s impact, mitigation and oil spills. After completion of the modules, students play an interactive game about how their personal choices impact the climate.

As educators, perhaps you know that poor children are entitled by law to dental care, but do you know they often can’t find a dentist willing to see them? On Tuesday, June 26, at 10:00pm, WGBY will air Frontline: Dentists and Dollars, which investigates a broken safety net where more than 100 million Americans can’t afford a visit to the dentist, its shocking consequences and solutions to fix it.

One in four children have untreated tooth decay, now the most common chronic illness among school-aged children with adults faring no better. Part of the problem is that many people don’t have dental insurance and can’t afford steep out-of-pocket costs for care. Medicare offers no dental coverage unless it’s connected to a medical procedure, and while poor children are covered by Medicaid, many dentists’ offices turn them away because the profit margins are so low. In 2009, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation data, 19 million children had no dental insurance — more than twice the number who went without health insurance.

Frontline also looks at the practices of two private companies offering dental care for those in need, Kool Smiles and Aspen Dental, and the questions raised about whether such companies are taking advantage of some young patients and offering financing that may be exploiting poor families.

We hope you’ll watch this Frontline documentary to learn more about the state of our children’s dental health care.

Each session uses the show as a leaping-off point for developing children’s vocabulary and exploring core math concepts. Research on this summer initiative by WestEd shows that participants demonstrated significant gains in vocabulary, numeracy, and literacy skills.

Key features of this Summer Learning Program include 36 hours of summer learning content, 3 hours of video content packaged into 15-minute episodes, online games, group activities, and skill-building activity sheets. All of this is accompanied by a 90-minute staff orientation and PowerPoint that assists with the professional development of implementation staff.

Best of all: all of these materials are free for your usage. All you need is the motivation to get started! You can implement this summer program in your formal or informal summer learning program. Check out some of the great resources included in this summer curriculum:

PBS Kids’ CYBERCHASE shows kids that math is everywhere and everyone can be good at it! Online quests, games, videos and more help them develop strong math and problem-solving skills. Here are 3 lessons from CYBERCHASE that include handouts, assessments and Teacher Lesson Guides:

Using Combinations to Solve a Problem (Grades 2-6) In video segments two puzzles are presented. Each requires students to consider nine combinations and eliminate possibilities by using clues to find the correct solution. Each time, students are shown a video and given an opportunity to solve the problem before they watch the CyberSquad generate the solution. Mathematics explored shows how two dimensions, with three variables each, produce nine combinations.

Addition of Decimal Numbers and a Common Error (Grades 4-7) Students are asked to calculate sums of decimals that total more than one, carefully lining up decimal places. This activity is motivated by two video clips in which the characters calculate sums involving decimals, but in each case there is an error in the decimal point placement.

Investigating Tessellations Filling 2-D Space (Grades 2-5) Students explore the arrangement of shapes that can fill a plane with no overlaps or gaps, called tessellating. In a video segment the CyberSquad uses tessellating to overcome challenges to reach Hacker. They’re also introduced to the terms “congruence” and “similar.”
