Doodle: http://doodle.com/ If you haven’t yet discoverd this handy tool, it’s time to rejoice. Doodle allows you to set up a brief survey to which you can invite others. It’s extremely handy for scheduling meetings. Rather than emailing ten people multiple times, use doodle to set up a survey, have everyone choose their best day/time, and then send out one email to confirm. It’s great.

On Larry Ferlazzo’s Websites for the day, I found his post: “The best Online Interactive Exercises for Writing that are are not Related to Literary Analysis. Boy is this a treasure trove. There are sites about citation, research, writing for an authentic audience, researching and writing biographies, and many, many, many more.

Skim 1.3.1 (2009-10-16) Michael O. McCracken

요즘엔 Mac OS X 미리보기(Preview.app)에 기능이 많이 추가되어서, 중복되는 기능이 많지만 여전히 매력있는 PDF 뷰어.

1.3에서 아이콘이 바뀌었다. (새로 만든 거라 그런지 그전 것보다 더 좋아보인다) 다른 부분은 뭐가 바뀐 건지 잘 모르겠음;;;

p.s Skim은 표준 PDF 노트와는 다른 독자적인 방법으로 문서에 메모를 한다. 즉 다른 PDF 뷰어에서 보면 Skim에서 편집한 내용이 보이지 않는다. (‘PDF With Embedded Notes’로 내보내기(Export)하면 다른 PDF 뷰어에서도 볼 수 있다.)

Skimnotes의 장점은 원본 파일과 노트를 분리해서 저장할 수 있는 점과, 다양한 기능을 추가할 수 있는 점인 거 같다. Skimnote Framework이라는 라이브러리로 기능을 제공한다. (최신판: 1.2) 이 기능을 지원하는 프로그램으로는 같은 제작자가 만든 BibDesk가 있다.

p.s Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard 이후로 Skim이 잘 죽는 경향이 있는데, 여전히 그런 거 같다.

PDFSlide 0.1.2.1 (2009-10-01) David Ellefsen

PDF 파일을 슬라이드로 보여주는 프로그램. Apple Remote와 다중 모니터를 지원한다.

좋은 아이디어 같다. 번잡한 프리젠테이션 도구를 사용하는 것보다 PDF를 사용하면 방법도 단순하고 호환성 문제도 해결할 수 있다. 멀티미디어를 사용하는 데 제약이 있겠지만, 반대로 문서나 이미지 출력물을 보여주는 데는 장점이 있다. 출력하는 화면을 따로 선택할 수 있고, 리모콘도 쓸 수 있는 등 핵심적인 기능은 구현되었으나 프로그램이 아직 덜 완성된 느낌.

p.s LaTeX의 Beamer 등에서 PDF로 출력해서 이용할 수 있다.

When you think about it, PDFs are a really great document format. Compared to alternatives, they’re incredibly compact, offer extensive functionality and can be shared over nearly every platform that’s out there.

The one downside of a PDF is that you’ll need a PDF reader. Sure, there are some great free applications out there, but it’s yet another install – especially if you’re not on your own computer.

More and more services are developed to let you view PDFs online in your browser. With all the code on a remote server, no downloads or installs are necessary. PDFs are entering the domain of cloud computing!

PDFMeNot

You might know the guys behind PDFMeNot from other successful projects like BugMeNot (access ‘must register to view’ sites) and RetailMeNot (giving you wonderful discounts by providing tons of coupons).

Like said previous projects, PDFMeNot trades in simplicity and great functionality. Don’t expect something fancy, with tons of offers and premium accounts – PDFMeNot does what you want it to do, does it well, and does not bother you with anything else.

PDFMeNot allows you to upload a PDF file from your computer, or to provide a valid web link. After some moments, during which the PDF gets read and processed to a more web-friendly format, you’re able to view your document(s) in-browser.  Since popular documents get cached, you won’t always have to wait out the conversion process.

The web viewer temporarily caches the whole document and provides you with a basic interface. You might not be able to make annotations, or do any kind of markup, but PDFMeNot does a good enough job as a reading tool.

Vuzit

To be honest, Vuzit isn’t really a tool to view PDFs online. However, on the site you’ll be able to find a ‘free test tool’ that does everything we need it to do.

Like PDFMeNot, Vuzit allows you to upload a file from your hardrive, or locate an existing file online. You might want to watch out what you use it for, though, as Vuzit shows a few of the most recent documents on its webpage – explicit and private content are thus not recommended.

The site keeps your document cached for some time, which allows you to give the link to your friends and/or colleagues. Vuzit makes an excellent choice if you want to pass a document along, and not everyone might have the means or the appreciation for PDF files. Furthermore, Vuzit also has a nice little ‘download’ button, for those people who still prefer an offline back-up.

The basic Vuzit interface and functionality highly resembles that of PDFMeNot – it even looks a tad better and comes with search functionality.

SamurajData

If you’re a minimalist, you might prefer SamurajData. This is without any doubt the lightweight PDF reader, with minimum looks and minimum functionality.

Instead of displaying the PDF in your browser, SamurajData converts the document to a series of GIF images. As you might know, these images take up very little memory, but come with a certain loss of quality. As such, your text might well be readable, but you won’t have the most pretty of documents.

SamurajData uses no flash, and instead has a completely HTML-based interface. You can browse the different pictures (read: pages) and optionally rotate them.

In short, if you’re looking for a really lightweight solution to view PDFs online, SamurajData probably is your man. However, if you’ve got a decent internet connection, I highly suggest to you to give one of the former two options a shot.

Another option you might also want to consider is Scribd.
