A brochure is an easy way to spread the word about your business. In your absence, it serves as your business handshake. If you’re there to hand one out, it solidifies the connection by giving your prospects an informative, take-home guide with all your necessary contact info. (DO NOT FORGET TO PUT YOUR CONTACT INFO ON YOUR BROCHURE!)

If you have your designer convert it into a PDF format, you can not only print out your brochure to hand out or use it as a direct-mail piece, but you can also attach the file to e-mails or embed it on your Web site to make it available as an electronic file.

Here are 5 tips to consider when creating a brochure:

1) Know Your Audience. The colors, the fonts, the amount of text, the diction, the layout and the use of testimonials or photos will all depend on the age, education level, taste, habits and needs of your target market. Be sure you think through all these considerations before meeting with your  copywriter and designer.

2) Know How to Hold ‘Em, Know How to Fold ‘Em … Customers and clients may hold and open your brochure a myriad of ways, so you not only have to make sure that you fold it so it opens correctly when unfolded (with the text right-side up), but you also have to put teaser copy on the outside that will make your readers want to open it to learn more.

3) Know Your Ps from Your Qs. It almost goes without saying that you should have an experienced eye proofread your brochure for spelling and grammar missteps. But you should also check it for content. For example, if yours is a more casual target audience, you can be more relaxed on the grammar. Just remember that there is no excuse for typos!

4) Know When to Say When. Sure, that unusual font you found for your headlines on your brochure make it look really unique, but be sure to balance it out by keeping your body copy relatively neutral. The main thing to keep in mind is readability; you are trying to make your message as easy to digest as possible. In order to do this, a balance must be achieved between text and photos, between the use of bolding and italics, and so on. Simplicity is often your most effective tool, so be aware of how many extras you can do without.

5) Know It Like the Back of Your Hand. Your customers may reference your brochure months down the line. It’s important that you know every photo used, for example, so that when someone says, “I want my driveway to look like the one on page 3 of your brochure,” you know exactly what that potential customer is seeing. You can easily accomplish this by keeping a copy of your brochure in your work station for reference when you’re taking phone calls, and tuck one in your bag when you’re out and about in case you have to take a client call on your cell.

Tra i tanti tools per pdf che esistono, stile Acrobat Reader, il migliore secondo me, come lettore di pdf, è FoxItReader.

Perché è il migliore?

Perché, secondo il mio metro di giudizio, è veloce stabile e leggero.
E perché essendo un lettore di pdf, devi solo leggere i pdf.
Quindi mi basta, mi avanza e mi rende soddisfatto.

L’unica nota grigia era il discorso che fosse sviluppato solo per quella zozzeria di Winzozz.
Era…appunto!
Ho notato con piacere che esiste la versione anche per Linux, scaricabile dal sito in vari formati tra cui .deb.
Una volta scaricato, l’installazione è un gioco da ragazzi.

Per chi usa Debian/Ubuntu, basta dare il comando:

dpkg -i FoxitReader_1.1.0_i386.deb

e il gioco è fatto.

NB: volevo solo dire che il fatto di aver chiamato migliore Foxit reader è solo una mia opinione. Naturalmente per altri potrà essere il peggiore. Ma in fondo è questo il bello di avere molti software per la stessa cosa no?!

Cuando intentamos tener abierto el mismo fichero PDF en Vista Previa varias veces para poder ir leyendo varias partes del documento al mismo tiempo, nos damos cuenta de que no hay ninguna opción directa para llevar a cabo una tarea tan “sencilla” a simple vista.

Este método que describo para abrir el mismo fichero pdf en Vista Previa parece que sólo funciona con Snow Leopard, que incluye la versión 5.x de Vista Previa.

Es bastante sencillo realizarlo, pero tendremos que llevar a cabo una serie de pasos:

1. Abrimos el PDF como lo hacemos siempre con Vista Previa
2. Nos aseguramos de tener visible la vista de Miniaturas en la parte derecha de la aplicación
3. En Snow Leopard podemos agrupar todas las páginas del PDF en una sola para que sea más cómodo. Para ello simplemente en la primera página del documento, hacemos click en la flechita que nos aparece al colocar el cursor sobre esta página y veremos cómo las páginas restantes del documento se “Guardan” bajo la primera.
4. Abrimos una ventana de Finder (Si no la teníamos abierta) y nos vamos hasta la carpeta que contiene el documento PDF que ya tenemos abierto en Vista Previa.
5. Arrastramos el fichero .pdf tal cual, desde Finder hasta la Barra de Miniaturas de Vista Previa. Lo normal en este punto es que el fichero se muestre con todas las Páginas agrupadas también. Si no es así, las agrupamos nosotros como en el punto 3 y listo.
6. Hacemos click con el botón derecho del ratón sobre cualquiera de los Grupos de Páginas y Seleccionamos “Abrir en una nueva ventana“
7. Listo, ya tenemos el PDF abierto 2 veces
8. Si queremos abrirlo más veces, pues volvemos al punto 1

Volevo tributare il mio dovuto riconoscimento alla professionalità e gentilezza del personale addetto al Customer Service della sede britannica della White’s Electronics (Inverness, Scozia) e soprattutto della Sig.ra Margaret del Sales Management. Il 18 novembre ho scritto alla White’s chiedendo se cortesemente potevano inviarmi una copia cartacea (o PDF) del libro di Jimmy “Sierra” Normandi UNDERSTANDING THE DFX che tempo fa veniva normalmente inserito nelle confezioni del DFX. Come spiego nella mia email, il mio DFX (un ex-demo acquistato l’estate scorsa dal distributore ufficiale italiano) ne era sprovvisto.
La Sig.ra Margaret, dopo neanche un’ora, mi risponde che, pur se non è di prassi che tale volume accompagni le confezioni del DFX, loro ancora detengono qualche copia extra in azienda e che hanno provveduto ad inviarmene una per posta!

Ragazzi… il 23 Novembre è arrivato il pacchetto col libro… tutto gratuito!!!
Il timbro postale inglese riportava la data di spedizione del 18 Novembre… LO STESSO GIORNO DELLE NOSTRE EMAIL!!!! E guardate bene l’orario delle mail… 15.47 la mia… 4.56 la sua!!!

One of my dreams, right from the start of my journey with technology, is that one day I could eliminate paper entirely from my job. Pipedream….perhaps, and up to now I’d never quite cracked a method that would allow the dream to become reality.

Recently, I was helping out at a Moodle workshop and I was shown a method that may head me closer toward the paperless classroom. It includes using Moodle, a photocopier that can scan documents into PDF format, and Microsoft OneNote. It’s funny how all these conditions suddenly coalesced one day, not only in my thinking, but also in reality.

One of the biggest spends at my school is the printing of coursework booklets for students. Just about every faculty prints booklets that contain “learning” activities. I could spend a whole blog post discussing the merits (or otherwise) of these booklets, but that’s for another day. A guestimate from my boss was that we spend $20K+ on printing costs each year! Imagine what you could spend that sort of cash on, rather than on “one use” booklets that inevitably get tossed away at the end of each semester.

So what if we could make the use of these booklets electronic in nature? The obvious question was how do you make the electronic version editable to the extent that students could submit work, without having to print out pages, write on them and hand them in? That would just defeat the purpose of trying to go paperless.

So, in a wonderful combination of serendipity and old fashioned professional networking I have a potentially workable solution to play with. I have to thank Pam from Newcastle High for her insights in showing it to me.

Firstly, my target group. In my case, the participants will by our Year 10 (2010) students, who will have their DERvices (netbooks) and will hopefully, by then, will be skilled in the use of them. These netbooks have Adobe PDF readers and creators and OneNote preinstalled, making the whole process possible.

OK..here’s how it works.

Take your paper version of your booklet. Stick it through your photocopier, so it produces a complete PDF copy (in my case 40 pages). Upload the PDF booklet to your Moodle course, and make it available as a resource file. At the same time, create an “Upload one file” assignment activity that is named after the worksheet, or whatever, and put it in the same area as the booklet PDF.

Now, in class, when you want to use a resource or activity that is in the booklet, the kids can open the PDF booklet to the required page. Select the page for printing, but instead of printing it to paper, in the print dialogue window, select “Print to OneNote”. The page selected will now appear in a OneNote notebook. For those that know OneNote well, you know you can click and type anywhere on the page. In this case, the kids can click and type anywhere on the selected page imported from the PDF booklet. The kids can now do their work on the page, and when they finish, save it as a PDF file on their PC.

They head to Moodle, and upload their work as a PDF to the assignment activity. The teacher can open the file, grade the work and feedback to the kids….without touching one piece of paper! Samples of student work can be collected and presented electronically as an ePortfolio, without carting folders, books or paper to your Head Teacher or Principal.

Sure there will probably be limitations that don’t suit everyone’s workplace, but I my humble opinion, it’s a right step in an exciting direction.

Mac OS X bietet von vornherein die Möglichkeit PDFs zu betrachten und eingeschränkt zu editieren. Was ich vor allem bei frischen Windows Installationen (nicht mal Windows 7 kann ab Werk etwas mit PDFs anfangen) oft vermisse wenn ich dann ohne Internetverbindung dasitze und eine PDF öffnen möchte (ist tatsächlich schon öfter vorgekommen wie man glauben könnte^^). PDFs sind wohl die einfachste Art Dokumente auf so ziemlich jedem System exakt gleich aussehen zu lassen.

Außerdem gibt es auch sehr viele Möglichkeiten für Anmerkungen aller Art wie Textmarker, Unterstreichen, Durchstreichen, Texte, Kommentare, Pfeile usw. die dann alle im PDF gespeichert werden könne. Für Besitzer eines Macbooks mit Multitouch-Trackpad ist es möglich über die Rotate-Geste ganze Seiten zu drehen (Tastenkombination ⌘+L und ⌘+R), der Pinch-Geste zu zoomen und mit dem 3 Finger-Swipe durch die Seiten zu blättern.

Für mich eine der meist genutzten Funktionen von Mac OS X, aber es soll auch immer wieder Leute geben die sie noch nicht entdeckt haben, das erzeugen von PDFs über den Druckdialog. Funktioniert in Praktisch jedem Dokument das gedruckt werden kann. Einfach Links unten auf “PDF” klicken und dann “Als PDF sicher…” auswählen.

Zuletzs noch wenn ihr Firefox benutzt und PDFs im Browser ansehen wollt wie ihr es gewohnt seid, benötigt ihr das PDF Plugin für Mac OS X. Für Safari sind keine Plugins vonnöten er beherrscht PDFs Out of the Box.

Una característica infinitamente útil de Mac OS X es la integración que tiene con el formato PDF. Esta integración es a nivel de todo el sistema y una de sus consecuencias es que todas la aplicaciones pueden al imprimir, en vez de hacerlo a una impresora, hacerlo a un archivo PDF.

Por supuesto, esto tiene usos bastante variados. Uno de ellos, muy práctico, es que documentos como boletas, facturas o comprobantes pueden ser guardados en nuestro disco duro en vez de impresos, ahorrando tinta y papel, salvando árboles, evitando la contaminación y construyendo un mundo mejor… tal vez no es para tanto, pero al menos es útil si eres desordenado en la oficina: Spotlight encontrará el documento rápidamente.

Esto es de hecho algo que Apple pensó. Si vamos al panel de impresión podremos encontrar el botón-menú (una de las características más extrañas en cuanto a usabilidad de OS X, y que viene a demostrar que OS X no es perfecto) PDF.

En este menú podemos encontrar la opción Guardar PDF en la carpeta de recepciones web.

¿Y qué carpeta es esta? Si no existe, el sistema la crea en nuestra carpeta Documentos con el nombre Web Receipts (parece que se les olvidó poner la localización).

Todo funciona muy bien, salvo un detalle: Si guardamos un archivo y tiene el mismo nombre que otro ya existente en la carpeta, se sobreescribirá el anterior. Ante eso, ¿qué podemos hacer? Automator al rescate.

Cuando creamos un flujo nuevo en Automator de Snow Leopard, una de las opciones que nos ofrece es la de crear un módulo de impresión, es decir, una forma de procesar los datos PDF que recibirá desde el panel de impresión. En Leopard, podemos guardar como módulo de impresión en el menú Archivo, yendo a Guardar como módulo y elegir módulo de impresión.

Esto nos da una ventana de Automator con un recordatorio del tipo de archivo que usaremos.

Lo que haremos es muy simple. Ya que cada archivo debe tener un nombre diferente, lo más fácil es agregarle un identificador a cada uno, en este caso, la fecha de creación. Luego, llevaremos el archivo a la carpeta Web Receipts.

Lo primero es simple, sólo debemos buscar la acción de Automator Renombrar ítems del Finder y añadirla al flujo. Al hacerlo, Automator nos preguntará si queremos añadir previamente la acción Copiar items del Finder, lo que en este caso no es necesario.

Notemos que también está la opción Renombrar documentos PDF. No la usaremos, sin embargo, pues lo que hace es tomar el texto en el título del PDF (en sus metadatos) y usarlo como nombre del archivo.

Una vez que hemos usado la acción, debemos configurarla. Aquí el formato de la fecha queda más a gusto personal. Personalmente, prefiero dejarlo como se ve en la imagen anterior.

Configurada la acción, debemos guardar el PDF en la carpeta de recibos. Hacemos eso trasladándolo a esta carpeta (el PDF está ya guardado en una carpeta temporal). Buscamos la acción Trasladar ítems del Finder y configuramos la ubicación, eligiendo Otra… en el menú de carpetas

Esto nos muestra una ventana para elegir la carpeta. Si no existiera, podemos crearla (dándole el nombre Web Receipts) en nuestra carpeta Documentos. Si existe, sólo la seleccionamos.

Con eso estamos listos. Guardamos con un nombre adecuado (en mi caso, “PDF con fecha a Web Receipts”). Cuando vamos a imprimir, nos muestra en el menú PDF nuestro módulo.

Seleccionamos nuestro flujo y nos guarda el archivo PDF, como podemos ver.

Se me está haciendo costumbre que cuando tengo ganas de escribir sobre algo enciendo un cigarrillo, no sé si me inspire o la nube del mismo me envuelva a otros lugares, no lo sé… solo sé que pasa… me siento Carrie de Sex and the city (una de mis series favoritas y la biblia de toda mujer! Niñas! Si no la han visto es momento que lo consideren pero a la de ya!!!).

Cuando las cosas no se dan como uno espera no hay que enojarse o desilusionarse, sino tomar las cosas como son y si por algo no se presentan tuvo que haber una razón superior para que no se diera y hay que ver el lado positivo de esto, que tal vez no debía de ser por algo que uno desconoce pero que más adelante sabrás el porqué y lo tomarás con filosofía…

Soy de las personas que si se presenta la oportunidad la tomo y eso ya lo comenté anteriormente pero cuando uno busca la oportunidad y no se da pues a lo que sigue sin cuestionarlo y tomarlo como viene…

Eeen fin en esta ocasión la oportunidad no se dio por “x” o “y” razón, pero no pasa nada, de hecho me es indiferente pero solo sé… que se le da vuelta a la página del archivo pdf jejeje sin retorno…

Editar uma revista de RPG não é algo fácil. Editar uma revista de RPG no Brasil, trabalhando 12 horas por dia em uma coisa completamente diferente é realmente um desafio.

Ainda bem que temos coisas boas – muito boas – nessa edição. Sim, estamos falando de elfas! Elfas, gostosas, lindas, peitud… ops! É, tem aquele molequinho do Link também. Sim, estamos falando de Zelda, o famoso RPG que nasceu no Nintendinho e cruzou décadas para chegar ao atual Nintendo Wii.

Falando em Elfas, sabemos que muitos grupos de RPG no Brasil sofrem com um problema crônico, a falta de joagdoras do sexo feminino. Por isso, a RPGMagazine, iluminada pelo todo-poderoso Chuck Norris, foi buscar com elas, as meninas que jogam RPG, as dicas de como fazer uma aventura que atraia e agrade a mulherada.

Ainda temos um local muito assombrado para Storyteller, Trevas, GURPS e d20/OGL, o rancho Path of Skinwalker, uam fazendinha que de bucólica não tem nada. Lá é um verdadeiro McDonald’s sobrenatural, você pode pedir pelo número: fantasma, poltergeist, morto-vivos, OVNIs…. Praticamente tudo o que é estranho, sobrenatural e esquisito resolveu fazer uma parada por lá.

Falando em Fast Food, quem nunca precisou de um NPC de última hora? Quem nunca ouviu aquele jogador chato perguntar “Como é que o taverneiro se parece?”… Pois bem, seus problemas se acabaram-se. Nesta edição, tabelas para gerar NPCs de última hira.
