My Sony Vaio W is light weight both in terms of physical weight as well as processor resource. What I thought it needed some light and fast software to increase productivity without hurting performance. I am using a few now.

PDF creation and Dropbox: Netbook move between office and home and I have access to multiple different printers. Instead of putting all shorts of printer driver I am using PDF creator to print virtually to a pdf file and uploading those pdf files to Dropbox cloud service. As all my desktops connected to the printer have dropbox, I can take printout without setting up for each different one. Sometime I need to make a single PDF file from several one or wants to selectively delete a page from a particular pdf file, I use PDFSam to do that. None of these are resource hog and both PDFCreator and PDFSam is open source free software (you can donate if you like them). Dropbox is a commercial cloud service but their free account is good enough for my purpose.

Adobe Acrobat is a great tool for creating PDF files, combining contents from multiple sources into a single PDF, creating forms, and generally sharing information. The problem is the price: $300 for the Standard version, $450 for the Pro version, and $700 for Pro Extended.

I have a 3-pronged attack for getting most of Acrobat’s functionality for free. I’m not claiming that my solution is an exact replacement for Acrobat, but it does allow you to create and merge PDFs, and rearrange and add/delete pages from them.

Part 1: the right programs

The easiest part of my strategy is to choose the right programs, specifically ones with PDF save/export built in. OpenOffice.org, my MS Office replacement, can save files to PDF right out of the box (if the program came in a box). I’ve never done it, but apparently you can also use OpenOffice.org to create PDF forms. Inkscape is my vector graphics editor, and Scribus is my desktop publishing application, and both can open and save PDFs. Celtx is maybe a little more obscure, but it’s an excellent program for writing screenplays (and much more), and it also supports saving to PDF. All of these programs can be downloaded and used for free.

The benefit of using a program with built-in PDF save functionality is that you can manipulate the content right in the program (move pages, add comment boxes, etc.), and then save it to PDF when you want to lock it down. If you want to make any additional changes, just go ahead and then save to a new PDF.

Part 2: PDFCreator

Not all programs allow you to save directly to PDF, even though the list is definitely growing. Even Microsoft Office now supports saving to PDF, but it will cost you $150 for the cheapest version. To add PDF functionality to any program with print functionality, install the free PDFCreator print driver. Once installed, a new printer will be added to your list called PDFCreator. To save any document to PDF, just print to this PDFCreator printer and the program will launch and allow you to create and view your new PDF.

The benefits of using PDFCreator are similar to Part 1: you can use the programs you’re using already to edit files, and then just print to PDF when you want to lock it down. PDFCreator also allows encryption of PDFs,digitally sign them, save to other formats such as JPG and EPS, and even merge multiple files into one PDF.

Part 3: PDFill PDF Tools

Say you already have some PDFs that you want to alter in some way. In comes PDFill PDF Tools. These utilities allow you to do a ton of things with PDFs: merge, split, reorder, encrypt, decrypt, rotate, crop, reformat, add header/footer, add watermark, convert images and postscript files to PDFs, convert PDFs to images, manipulate form fields, view PDF information, scan to PDF, and create transparent images.

Conclusion

With these three strategies, you can get most of the functionality of Adobe Acrobat Standard, and save $300. Sure, it’s not all contained in one interface, but in my mind, that can be more of a feature, since you can work directly in the programs you’re using anyway.

I have been using Microsoft OneNote 2007 ever since it was released, as I was using its predecessor, OneNote 2003. OneNote is a highly flexible note taking software, which can help you sort and organize information without putting too much effort into layout. Just paste, send, or drag-and-drop nearly any content from any kind of application into it and an editable, indexed copy will remain in your notebook. It was the most innovative software I had seen from Microsoft in years and it is highly useful for any brainstorming or research activities on the internet. I use it next to daily for years now. Only recently have I seen more impressive software (& service) by Microsoft in the form of LiveMesh.

If anybody is using OneNote 2007 in a Microsoft Windows Vista 64 bit enviroment (possibly also Microsoft Windows XP 64 bit) they will notice that the virtual printer is missing, which enables users to send print-outs from any program with printer capability to OneNote. This issue has been discussed by the OneNote developers and widely criticized by OneNote users. This is due to the lack of 64bit support of the Microsoft Office Document Imaging (MODI) component.

This feature is based on OCR’ing from a .tiff file if I understand it right. So basically you run OneNote with a command line switch pointing it to any .tiff file, and OneNote will automatically OCR this file and add it to the unfiled notes section. So we need to create a .tiff file and automate the process of opening OneNote with the correct command line switch. A long time ago I saw a solution with a commercial virtual printer, similar to PDF creation solutions, by Niels Kaiser. So I thought the same should be possible with the open source and more importantly free PDF Creator. I have been using this solution for maybe a year now but never got around to documenting it. So here it goes:

1) Install PDF creator with the command line switch /UseINI, so you can use different .ini configuration files.

2) Create a new printer using any printer driver installed.

2.1) Launch the properties dialog of the newly created printer. (If you got UAC running, you’ll need to do it as Administrator)

2.1) Go to the drivers section and select PDF Creator as driver.

2.2) Go to the ports section and select PDF Creator.

2.3) Click configure below the ports selection and under command line switches put the following

-PPDFCREATORPRINTER -OptionsFile”E:\Eigene Dateien\shared\PDFCreator\PDFCreator_onennote.ini”

Of course, you can change the path to point to wherever you want to put your .ini file containing the configuration for PDF Creator.

3) Create an .ini file in the path specified. I suggest copying the default “PDFCreator.ini” file, found in your user folder (“C:\Users\SOMEONE\AppData\Roaming\PDFCreator”) to another folder.

3.1) Open the .ini file and change the following properties:

Of course you should change the paths specified as needed. Alternatively you can copy and paste my config (I could only attach as .doc) into your .ini file, provided you have the same paths as me.

If you are looking for a different solution to this particular problem, you could go stick to a 32 bit OS or try the XPS solution put forward by David Rasmussen, one of the OneNote developers long after the release. I for one have never tried his solution since I already had a working one.

Of course you can always try different products, and the biggest competitor to my knowledge is Evernote. I fiddled with it some time ago, but prefered OneNote for the tight integration with other Microsoft products, namely Internet Explorer and Outlook, though Evernote does have some other advantages over OneNote. You can find a more detailed comparison here. But recently I’ve been looking into Evernote again, mostly because of their impressive iPhone application. The only comparable solution to accessing and using my notes on the go I found for OneNote was MobileNoter, which, for me, simply didn’t work – but maybe it will work in your system.

هنا سيبدأ البرنامج بالعمل حيث سوف تظهر لك نافذة التحويل تستطيع منها تعديل خصائص الملف المنشأ بعدها انقر على ( save ) و اختر مكان الحفظ .

Dziś od rana walczę z “drukarkami” generującymi pdf-y. Po szybkim przeglądnięciu dostępnych (oczywiście darmowych) zainstalowałem sobie cztery.

Do moich celów będę używał PDFCreator, jako że potrafi nadawać automagicznie nazwy plikom, oraz wstawiać opisy (autor, tytuł, słowa kluczowe, itd) na podstawie zadeklarowanych zmiennych.

Przykładowo wstawiam znacznik <DataTime> i program sam wpisuje mi w nazwie pliku datę i czas, poza tym jako jedyny poprawnie wstawia polskie znaki w opisach. Niestety nie generuje aktywnych dowiązań do linków w tekście, z testowanych jedynie qprinter to potrafił (i to chyba jego jedyna pozytywna cecha).

Instalacja wszystkich przebiegła bezproblemowo, PDFCreator doinstalował sobie dodatkowo z sieci ghostscript więc połączenia online jest wskazane przy jego instalacji.

Najwięcej możliwości konfiguracyjnych ma Bullzip i nawet nad nim się zastanawiałem ale jak zamiast polskich liter w nazwie zapisywanego pliku wstawił mi ? (znaki zapytania) w związku z czym musiałem ręcznie zmieniać nazwę przed zapisywaniem to go odpuściłem. Przecież nie będę na to tracił czasu przy konwersji 100 plików, tyle klikania to samobójstwo by było.

Nie sprawdzałem czy blokowanie drukowania, zaznaczania itd. działa w tych wszystkich drukarkach poprawnie jako że nie będę raczej zmuszony tego używać. W PDFCreator działa poprawnie.

Qprinter, Bullzip i PDFCreator mają zbliżone jakości wydruku (domyślnie ustawione),czas generacji pdf-a też podobny, oraz produkują zbliżony rozmiar plików wyjściowych, trochę większe generuje Qprinter.
Rozmiar generowanego PDF-a testowałem na różnych 4 typach plików źródłowych: txt, doc, ppt, html.

doPDF generował domyślnie najlepszą jakość ale pociągało to za sobą ogromne rozmiary tworzonych plików (nie umożliwia zmiany jakości “w locie” więc go odpuściłem jako pierwszego). Drugiego wyeliminowałem Qprintera bo pojawiły się początkowo problemy przy generowaniu plików (komunikaty o ghostskrypcie którego ponoć nie używa) i poza linkami nie dawał nic dobrego. Trzeci odpadł Bullzip za głupoty w nazywaniu plików i problemy z polskimi literkami w znacznikach.

The main advantage of PDF files is that they are pretty much universal: anyone can view them with Adobe’s Reader and they are very web-compatible.  Also, if you’re trying to cut down on paper usage (either to save space or money) electronic versions of files are a great alternative.  Here are two apps that I have found really useful from time to time:

PDFTK Builder

I use this program mostly in one of two scenarios:

1. I used the school’s scanner to scan some pages from a book into PDF, but the stupid scanner only lets me save one page at a time, leaving me with 5 different PDF files for 5 scanned pages.  I also often end up with upside-down pages because it was more convenient (quick) to scan in that orientation.
2. I have a PDF worksheet, and want to post it for the students, but it has extra pages that I want to exclude.

Enter, PDFTK Builder.  This simple, free Windows program will combine, split, rotate, collate, and password-protect PDF files.  Its PDF-alicious!  Download it from the PDFTK Builder Site.

CutePDF Writer

Cute PDF Writer installs as a printer on your computer, so you can convert anything that you can print into PDF.  Potential teacher uses:

• You have a Word document that you want to distribute on a shared drive, but you don’t want any of the students to be able to modify it.  Make it into a PDF!
• You have files for programs that are not common or free, but you still want to share the content with your students.
• You want to back-up your grades from Easy Grade Pro (or other grading program) but don’t want to have to keep stacks of printouts.
• A particular reference web page that you want the students to use is blocked from your school.  Print it into a PDF and post that instead.
• You filled out some online form for administrative purposes and need to keep a record.  Print it to PDF and keep the file.

You can download CutePDF Writer from FileHippo.  Alternatively, if you want an open-source app that does the same thing, there’s PDFCreator, which is more powerful but also less easy to use.

PDF Hammer

If you don’t want to install any software on your computer (or you have a Mac), you can use the web-based PDF Hammer.  It has fewer features than PDFTK Builder, but will do simple combine, merge, reorder, and delete, of pages within multiple PDF files and let you download the result.  The same company also has a PDFtoWord web utility that does exactly as its name implies (which is useful if you actually want to edit an existing PDF document).

Acrobat.com

Although it’s still in Beta, Adobe (the company that is behind the whole PDF format) has released its own web application for dealing with PDFs called Acrobat.com.  Currently, it doesn’t let you edit existing PDFs, but it will let you upload other files, store them on their server, convert them to pdf, and even share them with others.  You can also create your own PDF documents from scratch with their “Buzzwords” app.

En los últimos años, Acrobat me ha parecido un software pesado y lento, por lo cual decidí por buscar alternativas.

Para Leer PDFs

Desde hace unos años utilizo y recomiendo Foxit Reader es ligero y gratuito, contiene pequeños anuncios. Un complemento para Firefox es instalado. Anteriormente, podías descargarlo como un solo ejecutable.

En el sitio PDFReaders.org encontraras varias alternativas abiertas, bajo los lineamientos Open Standard, y para varias plataformas.

Para Crear PDFs

Actualmente uso CutePDF, es muy rápido y ligero. Existe una versión comercial mas completa. Otro software comercial es  PrimoPDF. PDFCreator es una alternativa Open Source.

Solution – Give the Users group at least Write permission to C:\Windows\Temp.
