Sería curioso saber qué hubiera pasado hace un par de años durante la huelga de profesores universitarios. En aquella ocasión, gran parte de estos héroes de la enseñanza se limitaron a no dar sus clases sin preocuparse de comunicar que se encontraban en huelga (una forma inteligente de que no te quiten ni un céntimo del sueldo).

Ahora, podrán defender su dignidad obrera, le han dado el plácet al Inspector. Como el propio PDI reconoce: “a partir de ahora, la valía del profesorado de la ULL quedará  fuera de toda discusión”.

El Inspector les funciona a todos menos a los alumnos. Los alumnos seguimos dependiendo del reglamento fascista del 54. Un reglamento disciplinario sin grandes garantías. Un reglamento supeditado a los vicios, prejuicios e intereses del instructor y del rector de turno.  

Es una vergüenza que estos demócratas de mierda se atrevan a condenar las actividades políticas de los estudiantes, cuando, al mismo tiempo, obligan a todo un sector a sufrir las consecuencias de la imbecilidad y la debilidad reaccionaria de todos los gobiernos “constitucionales” que ha tenido Reino de España desde 1978*.

Sin garantías no hay libertad posible. Un marco político en el que una mayoría queda supeditada a una legalidad quebradiza no se puede considerar digno.

*NOTA:  ningún gobierno constitucional ha promovido la derogación del Reglamento de  Disciplina Académica de 1954. Actualmente, sólo se aplica a los alumnos.

Gracias a un comentario de un usuario de Youtube a uno de mis vídeos de cómo hacer un puntero infrarrojo, me he enterado de algo que puede ser muy útil para lograr mayor potencia en el LED del puntero. Algo que siempre andamos buscando los que utilizamos la Pizarra Digital Interactiva de bajo coste con el mando de la Wii ideada por Johnny Lee.

Se trata de fabricar un pequeño circuito llamado “Ladrón de Joules” (Joule thief) que, usando un transistor, amplifica el voltaje de la pila utilizada.

La principal ventaja es que se pueden usar pilas gastadas o pilas de 1.5 Voltios para un LED que necesita 5V para producir una alta luminosidad.

In the November 12th Toronto Star there was a short blurb on a house inspector in British Columbia being ordered by the B.C. Supreme Court to pay out nearly $200,000 to a North Vancouver couple.  Appears he was “woefully inadequate” in his inspection and after buying, the couple had to pay out about $200,000 in repairs when told it would be about $20,000.

I guess he didn’t go deep enough in his inspection.  When choosing an inspector check out the associations for someone who is professional and properly trained as well as check out the forums and see who gets recommended.  Always check references as well.

But don’t let this stop you from hiring a house inspector.  If you’ve read my blog you will see builders are out there not fulfilling their side of the contracts and it seems you aren’t overly protected.    All the advertising in the world that Mattamy has done really doesn’t show the whole picture. 

 Illegal wiring, homes sold without building permits issued, flooding basements and a plethora of other faults.  Enough problems that J.D. Powers dropped them to 2nd in the GTA and around last in the Ottawa area. 

So, do your homework and hire a qualified house inspector with the appropriate liability insurance.  And, make sure they are given the appropriate time to do a proper inspection.  A hurried inspection will only help the shoddy builder. 

I know my PDI was so rushed on moving day with Mattamy I really didn’t get to do a proper one.  Maybe having a house inspector with me would have ensured I wasn’t railroaded.

In this one, you will note that the city has concluded that it can safely go ahead with about 34% of the development in terms of flooding.  That doesn’t exactly make me feel comfortable, especially since they note the older developments need more plumbing to take away water.

Confusion on closing and paying to Mattamy has caused some new owners to feel embarrassed and are clamming up with friends. Not the kind of joy one would expect from a new homeowner.  But, Mattamy still wants more money and Tarion, may not cover what you give.

I read a very good column in the Toronto Sun titled, “Safety on-site” written by Nicole McLaws.  It discussed that drive you have to visit the site of your home being built, balanced by the safety concerns of the builder.  Both are very important and relevant.

I have to side with the builders in telling you a building site is not for the faint of heart, nor a visiting playground for children.  But, you as an owner should be able to visit and monitor the construction and ensure you are getting your value.

So, point one is leave the kids at home.  How anyone can inspect their property while looking after a couple of kids is beyond me and if you’re not keeping an eye on them, I hope you can accept the consequences of cutting their young lives short.

As McLaws pointed out, wear the right clothing for a construction site – I love heels on a woman but not when they are covered in mud, etc.

This will allow you to concentrate not only on your own personal safety but really have a good look at your house.

This is one reason I recommend a house inspector.  They are professional, very safety conscious and are being paid to find all the faults before you sign off. 

Now, builders like Mattamy let you do a quick frame-walk and then a quick PDI where you might be able to see some of the stuff and ask them questions.  Yes, ask the guy who is making the mistake a question.  Unless you are in the trades, how do you argue a point with him.  Like a mechanic arguing a point of law with a lawyer.  Just doesn’t cut it.

Now, a professional house inspector representing your interests can in fact argue your point – either verbally or in writing.  As long as they have the time to do a proper inspection, you will get your value from them.

I suggest you write into your purchase agreement that one be allowed to inspect the home.  If the builder says no, ask why.  And don’t fall for the bullshit line – safety.  A house inspector is better qualified to inspect your home in terms of safety than you are.  If they say no, you can still sign the purchase agreement but, you might not be happy.  I know I wasn’t with Mattamy and a lot more are in the same boat as I was.

So, make an investment that not only looks after your house quality but also your own safety.

“Smarter than a fifth grader, but are you smarter than an ant?” by Tony Oposa Jr. This statement made me read the whole article from the Learning section of the Philippine Daily Inquirer. And after reading the whole article it made me think about the question-

And my answer is the ANTS. Yes, you read it right. It’s the ants! With the reasons laid flat on the newspaper I can imagine how they really care about Earth and the environment, with them being one of the smallest living thing they contribute a lot for our nature.

“Before answering that question, we must first ask another question: What is the purpose of transportation? The answer: To move humans and things from one point to another.”
“Let us now compare ants and humans a they move one point to another:”

1. “Despite their number, ants do now have traffic jams. The reason is simple: They travel in single file. In contrast, human beings, who claim to be the wisest animals on Earth, insists on individual and chaotic movement. They want to travel when and how they want, congesting the limited space they use for travel. As one wit puts it, “Our insistence on individual mobility has resulted in serious collective immobility.” Take for example our so-called South Luzon Expressway or South Superhighway. It is neither express nor highway; rather it is a slightly-moving parking lot. That is, when there are no accidents or stalled vehicles.”

2. “Ants do not take up more space than necessary for their movement. In contrast, a human being alone in a car occupies 10-12 sq m; that is, when the car is not moving.”

3. “Ants do not use a lot of materials to move from one point to another. In contrast, cars use so much metal and fossil fuels. Metals, as we know, come from the earth- tons of ore are mined to produce a small amount of metal. Tremendous amounts of energy and water must be used and abused, to produce metals. The oil that cars use came from fossil fuels are taken from the depths of the Earth in a matter of hours, and the oil taken from them is burned in a matter of seconds.”

4. “Ants do not poison the air they breathe. Humans, on the other hand, are burning fossil fuels and emitting toxic and poisonous gases into the very air that everyone breathes. Is that smart? In addition, human activities produce carbon dioxide, a gas that traps heat and is not a major cause of the heating of the Earth’s atmosphere that has a perplexing and catastrophic impact on human life. How strange humans are! Despite their claims of high intelligence and great wisdom, they are the only animals that dirty air they breath, poison the water they drink, and kill the soil that is the base of their food.”

5. “Ants do not cover for their paths with concrete. In contrast, human beings pave the road they use for travel. First, concrete absorbs heat, the roads become very hot, and cities and places of dwelling become islands of heat. Second, because concrete does not absorb water, water runs off an is waited, instead of replenishing the groundwater that human beings extract for their needs. Third, because water is not absorbed by the soil and the vegetation, flooding occurs, resulting in damage to human beings. Is that smart?”

6. “When civilized ants bump into each other, they bow to each other. In contrast, vehicular collision often leads to heated arguments, sometimes fistfights or, worse, shooting. Ants do not have road rage. Humans do. I have learned that ants are indeed wiser and more civil that human beings.”

And I want to quote Tony Oposal Jr. again “I have learned that ants are indeed wiser and more civil that human beings.”
I hope human beings will learn to live life simpler like the ants. It may seem hard because of the “New Age” we have now, but when we atleast try or rather do some small acts of kindness to Mother Nature, I mean, the Philippine population is so big, and imagine if everyone will do little acts of saving the nature it will contribute a lot to everyone.

Presentación de la Asamblea de la Facultad de Psicología de la Universidad Autónoma de Madrid

A la atención del Personal Docente e Investigador y del Personal de Administración y Servicios de la Facultad de Psicología de la U.A.M.:

De un tiempo a esta parte, las Asambleas de Estudiantes se han convertido en una realidad importante, ya que se ha ido organizando un gran movimiento de estudiantes que reclaman una universidad pública (“de todas/os y para todas/os”), democrática y crítica.

De aquí, surge la creación de una asamblea de estudiantes en la Facultad de Psicología de la U.A.M. que tratará de:

1. Conseguir la paralización y extinción institucional del proceso ilegítimo, apresurado y marcado por la falta de comunicación, de imposición del “proceso de Bolonia” en la Facultad de Psicología de la U.A.M, y del nuevo Grado de Psicología, así de cómo de la aplicación de los reales decretos, leyes y demás normativas que lo forman;
2. Impulsar, a su vez, la presencia de un debate público, democrático y real sobre el tipo de proyecto de educación superior que deseamos estudiantes, profesores, grupos de investigación y personal de administración y servicios de la Facultad de Psicología de la U.A.M.;
3. Fomentar y actuar para la transformación de la estructura organizacional de la Facultad de Psicología y de la U.A.M. hacia una estructura democrática, participativa y directa.

Consideramos que todo el proceso que engloba la implantación del Plan Bolonia, ha estado marcado por la falta de comunicación, entendida ésta como un proceso de diálogo bidireccional. Que el proceso ha sido impuesto desde arriba hacia abajo, sin tener en cuenta a la comunidad universitaria en su conjunto, ni las necesidades reales de la sociedad actual.

Dicho proceso no se ajusta a la realidad de nuestra facultad ni a sus posibilidades, tanto humanas como materiales. Tanto el PDI como el PAS se verán sometidos a un aumento en su carga de trabajo por el mismo salario, las infraestructuras no se ajustan a la “renovación pedagógica” y los/las estudiantes se ven obligados/as a sufrir las consecuencias de forma directa (por ejemplo, con la disminución de oferta de grupos de optativas para el curso que viene).

La homologación europea no es real por la diferencia entre los países que componen el EEES (en unos países son grados de 3 años, en otros de 4), no existen intenciones de incrementar las becas “Erasmus” y cada país se reserva a su legislación interna la movilidad de trabajadores, permitiendo en algunos casos la entrada menos o más burocrática, por ejemplo a través de los Colegios Oficiales.

Por todo esto, creemos que los intereses de dicho proceso no son los que desde las instituciones nos hacen creer.

Atendiendo a la documentación al respecto (LOU, LOMLOU, Reales Decretos, la Estrategia Universidad 2015, etc.) podemos observar que el interés al que sí consideramos que se pone más empeño es la creación de una nueva universidad de inversión mixta (en principio 80% pública y 20% privada); a la transformación de la universidad en una universidad mercantilizada, esto es, someterla a los dictámenes de las necesidades del mercado (que no de la sociedad) y por último un proceso contrario al perseguido desde hace años en nuestro país, el de universalizar la educación superior. Para esto último, tratan de implantar medidas que sólo pueden ser satisfechas por unos/as pocos/as, por ejemplo, la prueba  Oral de Inglés en la Prueba de Acceso de Selectividad o la nueva endurecida Normativa Interna de Permanencia.

Desde la Asamblea de la Facultad de Psicología de la UAM, creemos que otra universidad es imprescindible. Buscamos un incremento de la cooperación y la solidaridad en el espacio europeo universitario para que los valores y las culturas de los pueblos sean respetados y complementados.  Queremos un espacio universitario que busque enriquecer la convivencia y la diversidad entre las distintas tradiciones y culturas de los pueblos y no basado en la simple movilidad del trabajador y en las necesidades del mercado.

Reconocemos la función cultural de la Universidad como un factor insustituible tanto para el crecimiento social y humano, como para enriquecer a las ciudadanas europeas. De hecho, la Asamblea de la Facultad de Psicología de la U.A.M. considera sumamente importantes la educación y la cooperación educativa para desarrollar y fortalecer sociedades abiertas, pacíficas y democráticas.

La Asamblea de la Facultad de Psicología de la U.A.M. acepta el reto y adquiere un papel fundamental en la co-construcción de un movimiento estudiantil a nivel local, para así lograr salvaguardar los principios fundamentales que se recogen en la Carta Magna de la Universidad de Bolonia de 1988.

Del mismo modo, buscaremos tender a la eliminación de la jerarquización en las Universidades, con el fin de democratizar su funcionamiento y promover la intervención directa de todas las personas que la componen en el diseño de la misma.

Por la presente, la Asamblea de la Facultad de Psicología de la U.A.M. se compromete a perseguir estos objetivos -en el contexto de un movimiento estudiantil local, regional, estatal e internacional- para exigir a las instituciones que respeten plenamente la diversidad de culturas, lenguas y la autonomía universitaria para consolidar el área europea de educación superior.

Nuestras expectativas son que todas las integrantes de la Facultad de Psicología de la U.A.M. respondan rápida y positivamente y que contribuyan activamente a la consecución de estos objetivos.

Con esto, creemos conveniente seguir movilizándonos y actuando para garantizar el derecho de las estudiantes a una educación pública y autónoma, a una Facultad de Psicología y a una Universidad Autónoma de Madrid democráticas, a unos conocimientos relacionados con una completa formación profesional e investigadora, un desarrollo humano para la convivencia y la solidaridad, con el fin de co-construir una sociedad más justa, participativa y crítica.

Os animamos a organizaros, a reclamar vuestros derechos, a que reconozcáis lo que es vuestro, a que defendáis la Psicología, que trabajéis juntas/os por una universidad mejor, por una facultad mejor, en resumen, por una sociedad más justa solidaria y crítica. Recordad que vuestro papel es fundamental para la legitimación de cara a las/los estudiantes de estas reivindicaciones.

¡No a la LOU, No al proceso de Bolonia!

Faz um bom tempo que não escrevo por aqui. Não assumi a rotina de muitos outros blogueiros por aí. Vou tratar de um assunto com atraso mais uma vez. Mas não poderia deixar de registrar minha experiência no ERCEMAPI deste ano. ERCEMAPI é a Escola Regional de Computação Ceará-Maranhão-Piauí, que é reunida através de um evento anual que segue um ciclo de ocorrência nesses três estados brasileiros: a primeira edição da ERCEMAPI ocorreu em 2007 e foi sediada em Fortaleza-CE; a segunda edição, em 2008, aconteceu em São Luís-MA e, neste ano, a terceira edição foi realizada na bela cidade de Parnaíba-PI. As Escolas Regionais de Computação (ERC) são eventos sem fins lucrativos promovidos pela SBC (Sociedade Brasileira de Computação) através de suas delegacias regionais. As ERC são jornadas de atualização em informática que tem como objetivos principais: disseminar o conhecimento científico acerca de temas emergentes e relevantes ligados a computação e incentivar a produção de textos didáticos e técnicos de alta qualidade (by SBC).

Eu participei do evento ministrando um minicurso voltado para o desenvolvimento em Java para aplicações de Processamento Digital de Imagens (PDI). Apresentei algumas técnicas de PDI e as principais APIs Java para desenvolvimento nessa área. Eu acredito que por ter “Java” na sua descrição, o minicurso foi bastante procurado e alcançou a sua lotação. Foram propostos 20 participantes por minicurso e me surpreendi com a presença de 30! E o melhor: apenas 5 saíram antes de encerrar meu tempo de apresentação! Ou seja, não fui tão chato assim! Espero poder contribui novamente em novas oportunidades afinal eu só ganhei nesse evento. Fiquei bem hospedado, com o apoio da organização do evento no Hotel Pousada dos Ventos, reencontrei amigos e professores do tempo de graduação (não diria ex-professores porque ainda aprendo muito com eles), visitei a Lunara e sua família (graças à minha querida Anne), encontrei novos amigos e engajados estudantes parnaibanos (DeltaJUG is coming!!!) e revisitei Parnaíba. Apesar de ser teresinense, achei a escolha acertada em definir o evento nesta cidade.

O ERCEMAPI 2009 teve, além dos minicursos, boas palestras – principalmente dos oriundos de Recife: Prof. Evandro Curvelo (Tempest Security Intelligence) e Sérgio Cavalcante (CEO C.E.S.A.R. – que fez a platéia assistir uma apresentação que se encerrou quase à meia-noite) – e apresentação de artigos categorizados em trabalhos procedentes de TCC ou Iniciação Científica ou como trabalhos de Pós-graduação (ambas com premiações). Como ponto negativo, a pouca presença de representação dos estados do Ceará e Maranhão: eu (como professor da UFC de Sobral), Leonardo (UFC, junto com Flávio Rubens, que aprontaram minicurso e artigo), Prof. Porfírio (da Unifor, como organizador) e o minicurso preparado pela turma da Profa. Bernadete (UFC) e nada mais do Ceará; do lado de lá do Parnaíba, alguns artigos aceitos mas os apresentadores não compareceram (uma pena!). Em compensação veio gente de Natal e Recife com boa participação. Parabéns aos organizadores do evento, principalmente ao Prof. Pedro Alcântara que puxou a responsabilidade de coordenador geral. Quanto aos agradecimentos, agradeço à Lunara pela sua recepção e o almoço oferecido , ao Rodrigo e Danusa pelo apoio logístico e companhia (olha aí, rapaz! Não esqueço meu prejuízo de padrinho pro ano que vem…), ao Leonardo (gente boa e mereceu a premiação recebida!) e aos guerreiros Ariel, Wagner, Josué e Ely que mostram o quanto vale a pena investir em educação nesse meio tecnológico. Abraço a todos! Pena que eu não visitei essa árvore aí acima, mas fica pra próxima… por enquanto indico esta foto.

Conseguir la paralización y extinción institucional del proceso ilegítimo, apresurado y marcado por la falta de comunicación, de imposición del “proceso de Bolonia” en la Facultad de Psicología de la U.A.M, y del nuevo Grado de Psicología, así de cómo de la aplicación de los reales decretos, leyes y demás normativas que lo forman;
2. Impulsar, a su vez, la presencia de un debate público, democrático y real sobre el tipo de proyecto de educación superior que deseamos estudiantes, profesores, grupos de investigación y personal de administración y servicios de la Facultad de Psicología de la U.A.M.;
3. Fomentar y actuar para la transformación de la estructura organizacional de la Facultad de Psicología y de la U.A.M. hacia una estructura democrática, participativa y directa.

Consideramos que todo el proceso que engloba la implantación del Plan Bolonia, ha estado marcado por la falta de comunicación, entendida ésta como un proceso de diálogo bidireccional. Que el proceso ha sido impuesto desde arriba hacia abajo, sin tener en cuenta a la comunidad universitaria en su conjunto, ni las necesidades reales de la sociedad actual.

Dicho proceso no se ajusta a la realidad de nuestra facultad ni a sus posibilidades, tanto humanas como materiales. Tanto el PDI como el PAS se verán sometidos a un aumento en su carga de trabajo por el mismo salario, las infraestructuras no se ajustan a la “renovación pedagógica” y los/las estudiantes se ven obligados/as a sufrir las consecuencias de forma directa (por ejemplo, con la disminución de oferta de grupos de optativas para el curso que viene).

La homologación europea no es real por la diferencia entre los países que componen el EEES (en unos países son grados de 3 años, en otros de 4), no existen intenciones de incrementar las becas “Erasmus” y cada país se reserva a su legislación interna la movilidad de trabajadores, permitiendo en algunos casos la entrada menos o más burocrática, por ejemplo a través de los Colegios Oficiales.

Por todo esto, creemos que los intereses de dicho proceso no son los que desde las instituciones nos hacen creer.

Atendiendo a la documentación al respecto (LOU, LOMLOU, Reales Decretos, Estrategia Universidad 2015, etc.) podemos observar que el interés al que sí consideramos que se pone más empeño es la creación de una nueva universidad de inversión mixta (en principio 80% pública y 20% privada); a la transformación de la universidad en una universidad mercantilizada, esto es, someterla a los dictámenes de las necesidades del mercado (que no de la sociedad) y por último un proceso contrario al perseguido desde hace años en nuestro país, el de universalizar la educación superior. Para esto último, tratan de implantar medidas que sólo pueden ser satisfechas por unos/as pocos/as, por ejemplo, la prueba  Oral de Inglés en la Prueba de Acceso de Selectividad o la nueva endurecida Normativa Interna de Permanencia.

Desde la Asamblea de la Facultad de Psicología de la UAM, creemos que otra universidad es imprescindible. Buscamos un incremento de la cooperación y la solidaridad en el sistema europeo de educación superior para que los valores y la cultura de los pueblos sean respetados y complementados.  Queremos un espacio universitario que busque enriquecer la convivencia y la diversidad entre las distintas tradiciones y culturas de los pueblos y no basado en la simple movilidad del trabajador y en la necesidad del mercado financiero.

Reconocemos la función cultural de la Universidad como un factor insustituible tanto para el crecimiento social y humano, como para enriquecer a las ciudadanas europeas. De hecho, la Asamblea de la Facultad de Psicología de la U.A.M. considera sumamente importantes la educación y la cooperación educativa para desarrollar y fortalecer sociedades abiertas, pacíficas y democráticas.

La Asamblea de la Facultad de Psicología de la U.A.M. acepta el reto y adquiere un papel fundamental en la co-construcción de un movimiento estudiantil a nivel local, para así lograr salvaguardar los principios fundamentales que se recogen en la Carta Magna de la Universidad de Bolonia de 1988.

Del mismo modo, buscaremos tender a la eliminación de la jerarquización en las Universidades, con el fin de democratizar su funcionamiento y promover la intervención directa de todas las personas que la componen en el diseño de la misma.

Por la presente, la Asamblea de la Facultad de Psicología de la U.A.M. se compromete a perseguir estos objetivos -en el contexto de un movimiento estudiantil local, regional, estatal e internacional- para exigir a las instituciones que respeten plenamente la diversidad de culturas, lenguas y la autonomía universitaria para consolidar el área europea de educación superior.

Nuestras expectativas son que todas las integrantes de la Facultad de Psicología de la U.A.M. respondan rápida y positivamente y que contribuyan activamente a la consecución de estos objetivos.

Con esto, creemos conveniente seguir movilizándonos y actuando para garantizar el derecho de las estudiantes a una educación pública y autónoma, a una Facultad de Psicología y a una Universidad Autónoma de Madrid democráticas, a unos conocimientos relacionados con una completa formación profesional e investigadora, un desarrollo humano para la convivencia y la solidaridad, con el fin de co-construir una sociedad más justa, participativa y crítica.

Os animamos a organizaros, a reclamar vuestros derechos, a que reconozcáis lo que es vuestro, a que defendáis la Psicología, que trabajéis juntas/os por una universidad mejor, por una facultad mejor, en resumen, por una sociedad más justa solidaria y crítica. Recordad que vuestro papel es fundamental para la legitimación de cara a las/los estudiantes de estas reivindicaciones.

¡No a la LOU, No al proceso de Bolonia!

Another bombing took place this morning, affecting a BancoEstado branch located in the Recoleta municipality of Santiago.

The explosion happened at around 2:00 a.m., and resulted in significant damage to the windows, as well as other damage.

In addition to the infrastructural damage, the device caused a fire inside the BancoEstado, necessitating the arrival of firefighters at the scene.

According to evidence recovered by the Carabineros Special Operations Group (GOPE), the device was made out of a fire extinguisher filled with black powder, and it had a mechanical detonation system.

The Investigative Police (PDI) were asking questions and making identity checks in the vicinity of the bombing, in the stupid hope of finding those responsible . . .

In anticipation of the 11/10 DVD release of Up, giddy fans gathered Monday evening at the Cubberley Theater in Silicon Valley to enjoy a special Commonwealth Club presentation by Scott Clark, Lead Animator at Pixar Animation Studios. His reel included a behind the scenes look at life at Pixar, the late nights, the swanky lounges.  The audience oohed and aahed as he talked about visits by famed animators like Hayao Miyazaki of Studio Ghibli. Then he showed the process of boarding, layout, and animating - talked about how it all starts with an idea, like an old man holding balloons, then it’s about the story, quoting John Lasseter, the story is king, if the script isn’t any good, it isn’t worth making, then it’s the editing, it’s always cheaper to redraw than to rebuild – showing pre-vis art and scratch dialogue of scenes that didn’t make it into the final cut.  For set dressing, the team went to Angel Falls, Venezuela to gather images of other-worldly plant life and rock formations for inspiration and reference. For character building, they even brought an ostrich, Ed Asner, a dog behavioralist, etc. to the studio.  He talked about humor, what is funny is what we know.  Then he closed with casting is key, the boy who was the voice of Russell was not an actor but discovered while his brother was auditioning.

ENCORE! When the program ended, Scott took a seat on the edge of the stage to hangout with his fans. In the crowd were tweens, fan boys, and up-and-coming animators like Robert Lazzarini, Animation Director for episode two of  Nova’s Becoming Human.  They chatted about Maya being as good as some of the proprietary tools used in the industry, how CG lends itself to an immersive world and hand-animated movies is best with lush flat graphics, Cal Arts being the top school in the field, RISD’s alumni including himself, Avatar’s Bryan Konietzko and Family Guy’s Seth MacFarlane, AnimationMentor a respected online school taught by pros from Pixar, ILM, Sony.  He talked about Pixar being at 1000 employees now, expected to grow to 1300, hiring specialized talent.  He suggested those getting started look to the animation houses like Dreamworks and PDI, as well as the gaming industry. Lastly, he talked about the importance of drawing, there are 1000 bad drawings in you, so to get to the good ones start now.  And then he left them smitten with his Twitter ID and autographed drawings of Dug.  In full disclosure, I was the producer of the event but I have never seen an audience at the Club so thoroughly engaged.  Many thanks to Scott for a great evening!!!

In my last blog I mentioned that Mattamy seemed to have some trouble putting on roofs with some substance.  Not the kind of roof that would at least until your newborn got into high school, let alone college.

Well, there seems to be another problem and in all fairness to Mattamy, a problem that might be attributed to any builder who doesn’t understand the dynamics of water flow.  Since Mattamy was charged in the Ottawa area with illegal landfill into the Jock River, we can understand their lack of understanding in hydrology.

One person observed, on Mattamy homes at least, that when you have multiple roof levels on one house, you sometimes have downspouts that direct water to the lower roof.  He noticed that this concentrated water seemed to curl the shingles in that area and cause premature failure of the roofing.  Another homeowner noted that some of the downspouts caused rainwater to flow horizontally across the shingles, causing failure.

The observation of this fault was backed up by at least two house inspectors,  Halton-Peel Home Inspection and Halton Home Inspection Service who offered a solution. 

Ensure that the downspout is extended across the roof to the next gutter.  Yes, some feel it detracts from the house appearance – a problem that the Mattamy architect created but, you can have a functional house or a pretty house with a leaking roof. 

Your choice.

The advice given is:  ensure the builder puts on the extension and note same on your PDI.  If they don’t and there is roof damage, you might have a better chance at compensation.
