this is a really beautifully done video. i love high contrast black and white. they did a good job painting a picture of being “young” with the shots of the kids playing football, playing in the park, the couple chasing eachother, etc. juxtaposed with Jay being praised at a large concert (where he feels most young).

I recently had a conversation with a client about how she was getting on with her job, holiday shopping, taking care of 3 kids, starting her new exercise plan.  During her workout, she stated that she had little sleep due to sick child overnight but had kept on her schedule that day including  her workout.  How do you do it, I asked?  “You just do it”, she stated. 

As simple as it sounds, she’s right.  But how do we keep it simple when we are running in three different directions!  Prioritize. Sounds easy too, but again thing always comes up.  Each time you begin to add another activity or get involved in something, before committing or partaking, put it into  1 of 3 categories:

I must do this – it’s a necessity to sustain balance in my life and my family. 

I should do this – its important, but at the end of the day not as important.

I want to do this – its enjoyable, I would like to spend time doing this, or someone else that I care wants to do.

 Going back to those key words “necessity”, “important”, “enjoyable” will make it easier to make those decisions. Maybe you decide to meet yourself in the middle “I’m only watching these programs if I on my treadmill” , or revisiting the choice at another time “we arent going to get a dog now but lets talk about it again in 6 months.”

Several of you have received your special “Make the Time” bracelets from me.  Wear it or put it in a place where you see it many times a day to remind yourself to make the time for healthy habits.  Stop right now and make a list of things you want to do every day that you are not doing now and make them a necessity!

In Belfast at the Clubland 3 Tour unfortunately Tulisa From N-Dubz was I’ll and Unable to perform on the night, I was randomly selected to perform Playing with Fire with Dappy and Fazer at the Odyssey arena! Madness! I had so much fun though!

Hey all for November’s cutest couple I have Chosen Nick and Mariah!

Not only do I love Mariah but I love these two together, their relationship seems so genuine even though they make no attempt to hide what they have… Every time you see the two together they always seem like they are genuinely in love!

Although The Tattoo kill it a lil bit :S especially Nick’s huge one on his back, Imagine getting that removed after a Marital bust up… ouch!

Oh well Mariah has just released her New Album ‘Memories of an Imperfect Angel’ Hopefully she is getting one more album in so she and Nick can drop a yout or two! xXx

Hello Peopleeee… I know my blogging is lagging behind usual schedule and I apologize but Niecey has been very busy these last couple of days… On Friday as you may be aware from previous blog post I Supported Mobo award-winning Nneka ot Liverpool show on her UK tour.

Now when I heard her album I thought yeahh shes a breath of fresh air I like this woman. Well on Friday just before the Gig I got to interview her for Mesh Magazine and I have to say speaking to her and listening to what she had to say was an experience in its self. When she spoke she made you feel every word and when she smiled the whole room lit up. She has a beautiful soul with no airs or graces she is who she is, a very honest woman and yet is still very tactile.

Shes Fantstic…   She Also revealed who she will be touring with in 2010 and I have to say… Legends… I want to go and see that show! She also spoke about her Influences and how she feels about the western world growing up In Africa! stay tuned for the video of the Interview which i will post on Tuesday !

Tonight I have has a show in Printworks, Manchester which was fun apart from the fact that it was freezing and I was on an outdoor stage outside a pub where im pretty sure Man U where playing on the bigscreen :S but oh well I love a challenge.  I then came back to Liverpool to have an interview on the upfront show With Mandy… Fun Times

Now I am home an bout to hit the sack for a well deserved day off tomorrow

So…. I had heard of Nneka and I was a fan of her tune Heartbeat and that she had won a Mobo but thats all i knew of her… since finding out i was going to be supporting her on the 27th November (tomorrow) I got a hold of her debut Album ‘No Longer at Ease’ and had a listen to it.

Her music is such a breath of fresh air. You can clearly feel all of her different influences. There is the heavy African Influence, and a stong sense of a connection to African culture and yet the music is still very British and Gritty with a Sca  sounding edge.

When I first put it on it was about 11 at night and i thought i shall listen to it in the bath .I had the volume on just high enough so I could hear it from the next room. The 85 year old partially deaf man next door Donny, Knocked in his slippers and asked us to turn down the music for the simple fact that the bass is so thick that it must have been booming in his bedroom poor guy.

In her Lyrics she talks about her reality’s that she has faced and the struggle and the aparthide in West Africa. There is a song on the album (Track Called ‘Halfcast’ were she talks about what it is like to not be accepted by your own people. Her music is reflective of a time and yet has timeless revolutionary aspect that if it wasnt for its modern instrumental you wouldn’t be surprised if it was created in the 1960’s, It is defiantly a classic Album and one that will never go out of fashion.

I would advise strongly that you pop out to HMV and grab a copy of ‘No Longer At Ease’. I Am looking forward to meeting and supporting Nneka tomorrow for the fact that shes a truly great artist and i have so much respect for her music!

What is your perception of yourself?    Take a minute and visualize this perception……

Does it fit the reality of who you believe yourself to be?  Your perception of yourself can determine whether you are stuck in  limbo when it comes to reaching your goals –  if its not supportive, loving, respectful.   Ok, this may seem pretty heavy; however, improving the perception you have of yourself, your personal image, and your self-talk can propel you towards living a healthier lifestyle. 

Creating a healthy self-image can be acheived by fueling your mind with positive and supportive self-talk just as you would feed your body with good fresh foods.  If you have focused on negative critical thoughts about failed exercise or diet plans for several years, this isnt feeding your healthy self-image. It may be time to develop a new perception about your desire for a healthy lifestyle.

Develop a positive statement or mantra that you can use to replace critical thoughts, and come back to use it each time you find yourself fueling a negative self-image. 

It may be something as simple as:  I am free and healthy, I need this time for myself,  Its ok to put my needs first,  Its not important what other people think, I am taking this step towards enjoying a healthy body!  Im not working towards perfect, Im striving to be me!

Using positive affirmations or mantras that make you feel strong, proud, and free are important for creating a new realistic healthy image, and reaching your health and fitness goals.

Take a minute to write down at least one thing you say to yourself, one thing to others, or that you hear from others that makes you feel strong, proud, or free, and try use it next time you have a critical or negative thought.

Tiden går och jag har insett att det är dags att börja planera festivalsommaren 2010. I somras hyrde vi ju hus/lägenhet i Borlänge under Peace & Love, men tills nästa sommar känns det som om vi lika gärna kan nypa ett hotellrum för samma peng – eller t.o.m billigare, så just nu sitter jag och försöker få kontakt med Beng-Haa för att komma överens om nånting. Dock är han ungefär lika lätt att få tag på som Osama, så innan jag fått connection med honom lär väl varenda rum vara bokat, så det blir rum i Leksand eller liknande, så om du läser detta Jocke, RING MIG!

För att bygga stämning, sitter jag och lyssnar på Peace & Love’s playlist @ Spotify som finns att hämta HÄR. Denna lista byggs på allteftersom nya artister bokas, men än så länge ser det ju riktigt lovande ut.

Ok so i had a show on Sunday. My first show outside Liverpool. The Plan was for me to go up to London Sunday morning, do the show, stay over with friends and hit the studio till Wednesday, then head home for a Motown show on Thursday… Oh yeah for those of you who dont know I am part of a Motown Tribute band but thats a whole other story! lol… Yeah so anywayyyzz, my plan never went to plan, I ended up broke from buying earrings and other random things, cus now that i have no hair on one side earrings have moved up in my life priority list! 

So anyways my Sis Yasmin drove up. After getting stuck in hardcore M1 traffic, falling asleep on my Sis and her taking stalkerish, disgusting, sleeping, open mouth pics of me, we finally arrived, and then… got lost in a place called Holloway… After driving in circles 4 times we then realised that we were driving down Archway rd THE WRONG WAY! Nightmare!

SO… finally get’s there after missing sound check by like 2 hours, I walk through the door they say your on in 15 :S Panic set in, im thinkin’ DAYYYMMMMM!!! Nerves, as well as my stupid swollen gland on the right side of my throte, as well as the London crowd (who I’ve heard are TOUGH!) Aswell as the hair that i do have being flat from a 5 hour car journey! BAD TIMES! I shuffled to the bathroom to get dressed into a strapless jumpsuit that I was in constant fear of falling down and the fact that i had two bra’s on covering my 34 C’s would be exposed… Nerves!!!.

So it’s time…. Before me a Lovely Lady called Chocolate Blonde, who was also the compare for the evening performed with some next level energy… Im thinkin… ??? confused.com, I gonna get up now and sing some lil pop tune and a lil ballad!…Inhail…Exhail… But It was cool, Chocky Blonde was a funny chick! She introduced me with the random fact that i was born with a tooth… I was yanno ;) and then I sang my lil heart out all the while being conscious of the crack that was in the middle of the stage and my 7 inch stiletto heel that if i hadn’t seen it could have slipped down at any second… And the Halloween decoration hanging from the ceiling that kept getting stuck in my one side of hair… And ofcorse the 2 bra thing! But apart from tha it went swimmingly. I performed 3 track’s from my up and coming EP which i am currently in the middle of and should be due fro release early next year!

There were some other great acts on that night a lady who played guitar, i cant remember her name :S… sorry… but her voice give me shivers… she sounded like Dido…and 3 saucy chicks called  Taboo Babes who sang this one song called No no no no no no no NOOKIE! I like I like! After that there was a fashion show and more acts but we had to hit the motorway to get back to Pool so we said out goodbyes grabbed a Nandos takeaway and scranned it on the way home after which i fell asleep and woke up to my sister half way down the M6 with her eyes wider than ive ever seen them, the aircon full blast and the Jackson 5 “Blame it on the Boogie” booming out the speaker at 1:30 am… Bless ya Sis hahaha!

Känner att jag har fint flyt just nu. PM:an är nästan helt klar, behöver bara putsas lite på diskussionen. Imorgon ska jag göra min restuppgift i drama (missar examinationen som är på fredag..) men det ska nog gå bra Idag har jag slingat mammas hår och växlat in mina 960 kr i mynt på banken. Mer shopping i London nästa vecka kanske imorgon ska jag packa klart också. Ett i-lands problem kom jag på; jag och C-Love kunde inte köpa våra peaceandlovepass billigare, dels för att tiden gått ut, men även för att vi inte riktigt vet när vi åker till Frankrike nästa år, kanske missar vi P&L helt, men det gör inget, för Taizé smäller högre men förhoppningsvis hinner vi med båda Känns redan nu som om 2010 kommer att bli ett bra år!

Recognizing the small  changes you make towards a healthier lifestyle are just as important as the more noticable accomplishments.  They are meaningful when you recognize that you are instilling in yourself a sense of awareness, moving towards a shift in your thinking, and developing new habits. Here are some I heard over the last few days:

I  actually felt hungry “hunger pangs” for the first time in a long time.

I feel asleep before 10:30pm and slept all night!

I worked an extra 10 minutes past my usual 30 minutes and felt great!

I cleaned up my treadmill area at home and did two workouts on my own!

Close friend said my butt looked perky!

My fitted jacket fit for the first time in years!

My blood pressure has been normal for three weeks!

Acquaintance said you look like you’ve really slimmed down!

I really like how these new exercises target my muscles!

I gently turned down a request for my time (sorry but no) that would have interfered with my workout time!

I made sure to eat my mid morning  snack to fuel my workout time!

I now look forward to my workouts!

Welcome to Gangs of Paris, my attempt at urban ethnology in a city renown for the world’s largest concentration of French people, but lesser known for its spicy potpourri of cultures. This blog will document all sorts of exotica found here: ethnic enclaves, sordid counterculture, cryptozoology, historial oddities and all sorts of things that make this a vibrant and fascinating metropolis.

Paris is often derided as a mono-cultural “museum city,” with a fine crust of outlying immigrant hellholes, while New York and London get the all the kudos for being cosmopolitan melting pots. But scratch the cliché-ridden surface of today’s postcard-perfect Paris, and you’ll discover a city bubbling with ethnic and social diversity. You just need to dig a little bit. Why?

France has perfected what I like to call the “magical baguette,” to bastardize the French term (baguette magique) for Photoshop’s “magic wand,” a tool that selects areas of the same color (baguette actually means wand in French). For our purposes, we’ll define the magic baguette as an ideological tool that eliminates what the French deride as communautarisme, or the lack of social cohesion due to ethnic parochialism.

Beginning in the 19^th century, in order to assimilate waves of European immigrants, France waved the “Magic Baguette” on the Polish, Italian, Spanish and German huddled masses yearning to be libre. Immigrants were welcome, as long as they adhered to “Liberte, Egalite et Fraternite” and eschewed American-style ethnic ghettos.

Result: A good chunk of French population is of immigrant descent – a study in 2004 showed that 23% of the country has an immigrant parent or grandparent. Yet prima facie, the country does not really have the equivalent of “Italian-Americans” or “Irish-Americans.”

They just became, well, French.

Then figure in the Auvergnants, Corsicans, Bretons – each with their distinct regional identities and languages. Napoleon got rid of that stuff and attempted to dismantle the patchwork of regional cultures in France. [more on that later] Did the magic baguette work?

In 2005, riots in the banlieus – the immigrant suburbs outside of Paris and other French cities – showed the world at large that the magic baguette wasn’t as powerful previously thought. France’s social contract and model of integration was dealt a serious blow and for many, the riots were a sign that communautarisme was decaying the fundamentals of the Republic – the baguette was stale. But maybe it never was that fresh anyway.

Paris might not be “La Rue de Sesame,” but after living here for five years I’m impressed how so many different cultures continue to interact and exist together. Paris is in fact a melting pot, and quite a unique one at that, reflecting a particular French Touch to diversity.

I’m hoping my day-to-day experiences here – reporting, playing music (see here and here and here and here) and generally being an obsessional and over-analytical type – will shine some light on the lesser-known necks of the woods in this fair city.

In this space, we’ll deal not only with ethnic communities, but we’ll look at the fringe of French culture, political movements and anything else a little piquant that I stumble upon during my experiences here. Its a blog, after all..
