It’s someone who gives a false sense of peace by allowing and even utilizing lies to permeate in a situation or another person. Jesus said “Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called sons of God.” A peacemaker is someone who not only casts down lies that are swarming another person’s head but they confront that lie with truth. That’s a good friend. I’m tired of being a bad friend.

If you are not interested in Browsers and/or usability, I would suggest you don’t bother to read this post.

I cannot exactly remember the first time I used the Internet. It probably was in 1996 in the library at the Universiteit Utrecht. I wasn’t particularly aware of the browser I was using, but I am quite sure that is was Netscape Navigator with which I did the Altavista searches. I used Netscape throughout my education, only to switch to Internet Explorer 5 when I got my own computer with Windows 98 and a dial-up Internet connection. I then used nothing but IE until I read about Mozilla Firefox in a magazine in 2004. Through Moodle I had started appreciating open source software and I liked working with Firefox and its tabs. I stuck with Firefox for a year or so, feeling quite the rebel whenever a site would only load in IE. At some point I noticed how much faster IE was than Firefox. That is when I switched to Avant Browser, a freeware skin around the IE browser engine which included tabs and some other advanced features. A little while later (somewhere in late 2005 or early 2006) I learnt about Opera. Opera had a lot of appeal to me. I liked how their developers pushed so many innovations in the browser space: tabbed browsing, advanced security features and mouse gestures were all inventions of Opera. I loved how fast it was and how many features they managed to cram in so little megabytes. Its cross platform nature allowed me to stay with Opera when I permanently switched to Ubuntu in the summer of 2006. I switched back to Firefox in early 2007 because of my slightly more hardcore open source attitude and because of its wonderful extensions. The latter allowed me to keep all the functionality that I loved about Opera and more.

About two weeks ago I switched to Chromium. This is Google’s relatively new open source offering in the browser market. I am able to automatically download new builds every day through the PPA for Ubuntu Chromium Daily Builds. Even though it is still beta alpha software, it is highly usable.

So why did I switch? I think there are three reasons:

1. Performance
Since a couple of months my private computing is done with a Samsung NC10. This Intel Atom based netbook is slightly underpowered. You really notice this when you are doing things like recoding a video or doing some CPU intensive image editing. I also noticed it terribly in Firefox. Things like Google Reader, DabbleDB (watch that 8 minute demo!) and the WordPress admin interface were nearly unusable. A cold start of Firefox (the 2.x version that comes with Ubuntu 9.04) takes nearly a minute. Chromium on the other hand starts up in a couple of seconds and is very spiffy with Javascript-heavy web-apps.

I tried to quantify my unmistakable feelings with some benchmarking. I used Peacekeeper, but Firefox could not finish the benchmark and would crash! I then used the Sunspider Javascript benchmark and got a total score of 3488.8ms for Chromium and a total score of 18809.6ms for Firefox. This means that in certain cases Chromium would load something in less than one fifth of the time that Firefox 2.x will load it.

While writing this post I decided to try installing Firefox 3.5 (without add-ons) and see how that would perform. After a sudo apt-get install firefox-3.5 I could start Firefox by selecting “Shiretoko Web Browser” in the “Internet” menu. The total score was 5781.2ms, a major improvement, but still more than one and half times slower than Chromium. Its interface is also still less responsive than I would like it to be.

Another nice aspect about Chromium’s performance is that each tab is its own process. This so called Multi Process Architecture isolates problem webpages so that one Flash page crashing does not affect the other browser tabs, something that happened very often to me with Firefox.

2. Screen Real Estate
Another thing that a netbook lacks is pixels. My screen is 1024 pixels wide and 600 pixels high. Especially the lack of height is sometimes taxing. I have done a lot of things in Ubuntu to mitigate this problem (if you are interested I could write a post about that) and I had to do the same with Firefox.

In Firefox I used Tiny Menu, chose small icons, used no bookmarks and combined many toolbars into one to make sure that I have more content and less browser. To my surprise I had to do nothing with Chromium and still got a bigger canvas with a bigger font in the address bar! Compare the screenshots below to see the differences:

Chromium shows more of the page and accomplishes this by doing a couple of smart things:

• There is no status bar. I could have turned the status bar off in Firefox, but I need to see where a link is pointing to before I click on it. Chromium shows this information dynamically as soon as you hover over a link. When you don’t hover it shows nothing.
• The tabs are moved into the title bar. It looks a bit weird for a while, but it uses some very valuable space.
• Some things only appear when you need them. The bookmark bar, for example, only shows up when you open a new tab.

3. It is a fresh look at what a browser should/could be
Most of my time behind my computer is spent using a browser. More and more of the applications I use daily have moved into the cloud (e.g. mail and RSS reading). It is thus important to have a browser that is made to do exactly those functions.

The developers of Chromium have looked at all aspects of a traditional browser and have rethought how they work. A couple of examples:

• The address bar is actually a tool with four functions. It contains your web history, typing some terms will execute a search in your default search engine (saving me two characters compared to how I search in Firefox), you can type a normal web address and you can use keywords to search. If I type w chromium in the address bar it will search for chromium in Wikipedia. The keyword search also works in Firefox, but Chromium has a prettier and more clear implementation.
• When you open a new tab, you see a Dashboard of sites you use often (a variant of another Opera invention). That page also conveniently displays recently closed tabs with a link to your browsing history. The history page has excellent search (it is Google after all!) and has that simple Google look.
• The downloads work in a particular way. They automatically save in a default location unless you tick a box confirming that you always like to open that type of file from now on. This takes a little getting used to (I like saving my downloads in different folders), but once again the download history is searchable and looks clean.

In conclusion: Chromium is a browser in which some hard choices were made. No compromises. That means that I, as a user, have to worry about less choices and settings and can focus on being more productive. Making tough interface design choices can be a very successful strategy: witness Apple’s iPod.

For now I will be using Chromium as my primary browser and will use Firefox when I need certain functionalities that only Firefox add-ons can provide.

Harte Fakten: Futuremark ist der Hersteller von Benchmark-Software wie dem heutigen 3D-Industriestandard 3DMark2006, oder eben dem Web-Performancetest Peacekeeper. Hier zeigt sich, dass Macs unabhängig vom Browser schneller im Interweb unterwegs sind als Windows-PCs, auch unter Windows 7.

Dabei entpuppten sich Chrome für Windows und Safari für OS X als jeweils schnelleste Surf-Software.

Ach, und der langsamste Browser in jeder Hinsicht bleibt der Microsoft Internet Explorer, der für manche Tests bis zu fünfmal so lange benötigte wie die Spitzengruppe.

Wie wohl schon eine Weile bekannt sind Chrome und Safari die schnellsten Browser. Gefolgt von Firefox und Opera. Weit abgeschlagen liegt der Internet Explorer. Die aktuelle Chrome Beta ist 5-6 x schneller als der Internet Explorer in den Versionen 7 und 8. Genaue Daten bekommt ihr im Benchmark Peacekeeper der Fachleute von FutureMark.

In einem Interview spricht Geschäftsführer Oliver Baltuch auch davon, dass man auf einem gleich ausgestatteten Mac 5-10% schneller surft als auf einem Windows Rechner. Verwundert kaum, da das gesamte System ja schneller reagiert als Windows.

Daily Tech – Futuremark Interview: IE8 is Slowest Browser, Macs Faster than PCs in Browser Tests

All the browsers claim that they’re the fastest and offer the best Internet browsing experience. However, the performance of the browsers will vary depending upon your system. Therefore, you can test which browser gives the best performance on your system using Futuremark Peacekeeper. The site puts the browsers through a rigorous test which pushes them to the limits of their capability to do such things as: render websites fast, handle multimedia, and cope with data.

Peacekeeper is rather a joy to watch; whilst it’s taxing your browser by testing its capabilities, you receive a rather dashing show of colour, text, data, and at one point a beautiful video. These are designed to test your browser’s capability to handle the demands of the modern web. Leaving the browser alone whilst the test runs is your best bet, since using other websites whilst the test runs may slow down the test slightly and therefore cause an inaccurate result. Before you run the scan you have the choice of doing it with a system scan, or without. I chose without, since this saves installing a Java plugin. The scan runs fine and is just as accurate without the system scan, since it only serves to provide Futuremark with more data for their overall statistics.

You may be wondering what the point in all this is. Other than a rather pretty display of content, it’s actually very useful in terms of finding out which browser will perform fastest for you. Since the tests conducted by websites and magazines generally only test on their computers, their results may not be as useful to you. However, being able to test multiple browsers on your PC could prove very helpful in choosing which browser you’re going to use on a regular basis.

The test takes about five minutes to complete, and after doing so you’re presented with a screen which shows you on a graph the overall rating of the browser. You can click on the bar to see a breakdown of the scores to see how well the browser did in each area. Below that graph is a list of the top scores on the top processors. This is probably not of much use other than to make you drool over the expensive processors. You can also click the ‘Benchmark another browser’ button which gives you a URL to copy and paste into another browser. This then compares the results of all the browsers you’ve tested on a graph, allowing you to see a comparison of each browser you’ve tested.

I was surprised to see that Firefox was lagging a long way behind Chrome and Safari. However, this may be partly due to the fact that I use it most often and have quite a few addons installed. However, the overall statistics show that Firefox is markedly slower than Safari and Chrome. Whilst the tests tell you about speed and performance, you should also take into account the other features of the browser which the test doesn’t take into account – such as customisation.

Google’s officiella webbläsare Chrome släpptes till Windows förra året, så sent som nu får linuxanvändarna och dom med Mac OS X ta del av denna webbläsare. Det är fortfarande en väldigt experimentiell version som finns ute för att testas.

Om du vill prova denna webbläsare finns det ett par saker att tänka på: Det är en utvecklingsversion, räkna inte med att den är stabil och att allt fungerar. Det finns en del som inte fungerar, t.ex ändra personliga inställningar, skriva ut en webbsida, ändra standardsökleverantören, inte ens YouTube fungerar i skrivande stund.

Jag har testat den och den fungerade bra för mig, något som jag reagerade över var hur snabb den är! Vilket gjorde mig nyfiken att lägga den på testbänken med Peacekeeper, vilket är en tjänst för att testa hur bra webbläsarna presterar.

KHARTOUM, May 8 (Reuters) – Carjackers shot and killed an international peacekeeper at the gate of his residence in Sudan’s Darfur region, the UNAMID peacekeeping force said on Friday, describing the attack as a “war crime”.

The military observer, who died on Thursday evening, was the second peacekeeper to be killed in Darfur since the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Sudan’s president on March 4 on charges of masterminding violence in the western region.

“UNAMID announces with deep regret that one of its people was shot and killed last night in south Darfur, in Nyala, during a carjacking incident,” UNAMID spokesman Noureddine Mezni said, reading a statement.

“It was approximately 8.30 p.m., and unidentified gunmen shot the male military observer as he was opening the gate of his residence in Nyala,” Mezni said, adding the observer’s car was later found abandoned 17 km (10 miles) outside Nyala.

“This attack is deplorable. UNAMID peacekeepers are here to assist the people of Darfur and any attack on them is totally unacceptable,” the UNAMID statement quoted Rodolphe Adada, United Nations-African Union special representative to Darfur, as saying. He condemned the attack as a war crime.

Canadian Politics

• The federal government has this week authorized the government to spend $3 billion as quickly as possible to kick-start some of the total $40 billion in stimulus spending. Critics say that this spending will not benefit women because it contains no provisions for a national daycare program, pay equity or improved access to EI.

American Politics

• The health of immigrant women detained by US immigration officials is neglected and inadequate, Human Rights Watch reported this week. The report documents cases where female immigrants with health problems in detention facilities have been either ignored or had treatment delayed. Filing complaints was ineffective and sometimes resulted in retaliation. Those in detention have not been charged with a crime but are awaiting deportation.

Reproductive Choice

• Doctors in the U.S. are reporting an increased demand for abortions or vasectomies during the recession. It seems that some patients are concerned about losing their health insurance, but the main motivation seems to be a reluctance to commit to raising another child in uncertain economic times.

Violence Against Women

• A US sociology professor has released a study that demonstrates that in conflict zones patrolled by peacekeepers and humanitarian workers, it is more dangerous to be a woman than to be a soldier. Rates of sexual assault are high and there is a perception of impunity for sexual misconduct among staff associated with the international peacekeeping community.
• Critiques of police inaction on the case of Kirk Reid, who sexually assaulted more than 71 women since 2001, are mounting in the UK. Women’s advocates are calling for changes to police approaches to investigating sexual assault cases.

Economic Crisis

• A U.S. study found that contrary to earlier studies, now 26 percent of women earn 10 percent or more than their husbands and that for the first time, men are experiencing more work-family conflict than women.

Health

• The Chief Medical Officer of Health in Saskatchewan called for efforts to address the increasing number of new HIV cases recorded in the province on Monday. There were 174 new HIV cases recorded in 2008, a 40% increase from the 124 new cases reported in 2007. Young women comprised one of the largest increases in 2008, with a significant portion of new cases recorded among Aboriginal women and young women as young as age 15.
• A new study has shown that while African-American women have a lower overall rate of breast cancer, they are 3 times more likely than women of other ethnicities to develop very aggressive breast cancer.

International

• Reports this week indicate that a high-level, consolidated women’s agency at the United Nations first proposed in 2006 is losing political steam and is likely to be watered down or abandoned altogether. A single women’s agency–intended to consolidate or replace the four major women’s programs at the United Nations–has failed to muster strong political and financial support from member nations.
• Dr. Denis Mukwege spoke this week on the causes of the heinous sexual crimes that are being committed against Congolese women, arguing that they are found in the powerful economic interests invested in the region. He is this year’s Olof Palme Memorial Fund prize winner for his work as chief surgeon at the Panzi hospital in Eastern Congo where women are treated for injuries suffered during sexual assaults.
• Activist Nombinoso Gasa, the chair of the Commission for Gender Equality in South Africa, has undertaken a 21-day hunger strike to draw attention to the human consequences of Zimbabwe’s economic collapse, the authoritarian rule of President Robert Mugabe and attacks on the political opposition there. The fast is a part of a larger Save Zimbabwe Now campaign that is attempting to draw attention to the ongoing humanitarian crisis.
• A group of Saudi women have launched a campaign this week to boycott lingerie stores until they employ women. Saudi Arabia’s strict segregation of the sexes means that only men are employed as sales staff to keep women from having to interact with men.
• Britain’s National Health Service will advertise free surgeries to repair female genital mutilation procedures performed by traditional practitioners in some immigrant communities. Officials estimate 500 British girls are cut each year.
• Small-scale farmers in Ghana, mainly women, are being displaced from their croplands by the demand for biofuel production. Foreign agriculture firms are moving in and contracting large tracts of land to produce crops for biofuels, but pay farmers for only a portion of the lands under contract while monopolizing the best parcels which are normally reserved for food.

Other

• According to a new poll, nearly 25% of women aged 18 to 34 would rather win “America’s Next Top Model” than the Nobel Peace Prize.

Bun, dupa toate instalarile astea de browsere si java, care este concluzia ? de acum incolo voi folosi doar Chrome sau Safari, sau ca unul este mai bun decat celalalt in toaaaate aspectele ? Bineinteles ca NU. Utilitatea si performantele unui browser nu tin doar de viteza cu care afiseaza java scripturi, asa cum de altfel zice si FutureMark AICI.

Futuremark très connu pour son logiciel de bench 3DMark sort aujourd’hui une autre façon de tester votre navigateur. Il fallait bien trouver un moyen pour que les geeks puissent montrer qui a la plus grosse avec leur navigateur internet. J’ai découvert cette information grâce au site PC INpact. Étant curieux de nature, je me suis dit qu’au lieu de me fier aux print screen du site, rien de mieux que de faire les tests par sois même étant donné que les machines des utilisateurs sont souvent bien différentes des sites informatiques.

Pour commencer, sachez que je possède un Core 2 Duo E6300 tout ce qui a de plus basique cadencé à la fréquence d’origine 1,86Ghz couplé avec une carte AMD/ATI HD4850 512MB de chez Sapphire ainsi que de 4Go de mémoire vive de marque LDLC sur une carte mère MSI P965 Neo-F. Vous voilà donc informé sur la configuration de test. Ceci ne comprendra que deux navigateurs, car je ne vois pas l’intérêt d’en posséder plusieurs (en-dehors d’Internet Explorer 7 qui est inclus dans Windows Vista Home Premium 32 Bits).

Les browsers sont donc :

• Internet Explorer 7
• Opera 9.64

Internet Explorer 7 s’en sort avec 168 points d’après le bench.

Opera quant à lui s’en sort un peu mieux avec 441 points.

Que faut-il retenir de ce genre de benchmark ? Est-il plus intéressant que le célèbre test Acid 2 et 3 ? La réponse est NON. Ce n’est pas parce que vous obtiendrez le maximum de points avec votre navigateur — qui je le rappelle peut varier d’une configuration à une autre – que ceux-ci respecteront les standards W3C du web. Encore une fois, Futuremark nous sort de quoi faire une discussion sur un forum et critiquer ceux qui n’auront pas le meilleur score.

De plus, d’un point de vue sécurité, ce site ne reflètera rien des failles internet de votre browser. Pour terminer, nous noterons que le site est en version « Beta ». Les chiffres sont donc à prendre avec de grosses pincettes.
