Good morning!! The weather’s so good today. Clear blue sky, slight chilly breeze…but TWO

Good morning!! The weather’s so good today. Clear blue sky, slight chilly breeze…but TWO more days. I should start like doing an hourly counting down. Okay, that makes 54 hours exactly. Sorry about the abscence over the last few days. I was *ahem* trying to concentrate on studying, but needless to say, your blogs are so much more enticing. Need to exercise more self-discipline.

Breakfast this morning:

Pumpkin peaches oats. Made with Love.

I’m sending a huge heart to all readers out there. I’m glad for all the friends I’ve “met” online, and every single comment dropped really lifts my spirits. I’m so thankful for every one of you, peaches! (Mind the pun)

Ingredients for a love bowl: 1/4 steel-cut oats, 3/4 cup water, 1/4 cup vanilla silk, 3 Tb pumpkin puree, flax seeds, stir painstakingly for about 20 min, top with your favorite fruit. (On a trivial note, I added some all spice powder but by accident, too much powder came out but luckily I managed to salvage the situation by just carefully scraping the top layer away!)

Last night I signed into Facebook account, which is like once in a gazillion years. Looking at my friends pages and photos just makes me feel so sad…sad for myself. Seeing how friends celebrate birthdays with other friends, their smiling faces, laughing faces, funny faces, candid shots, having a time of their lives…something which I deprived myself from enjoying since I “contracted” ED three years back. I’m not a very outgoing person by nature but I do remember enjoying some good carefree times back in secondary school with my bandmates. While I know many poeple, it’s all just on an acquaintance level; a mutual relationship, a friendship that revolves around schoolwork. Conversations that would go, “Hi. What’s the format for the test?” However, I think the problem lies in myself alone. Sometimes I’m so afraid for the friendship to deepen, I’m afraid to let others find out about my past, I’m afraid of giving more to the friendship; sometimes I prefer it to just stay at the aquantaince level. This is all so contracdictory. But I’m so sad that I don’t even have a person to hang out with after exams on Tuesday. I havent asked one of my friends about her plans, but I’m pretty sure she’s going to be with her boyfriend, which I don’t want to be the third party…I make my life sound so pathetic.

Dorset Energy bar - Pistachio Chunky Slice

Can’t remember when I had this…okay the date says 25 November. My memory tells me that this was a super duper yummy “clean” bar, not too sweet, and a nice crunch from the nuts. Only slightly expensive.

I had the Optimum Peanut Butter Energy Bar yesterday and it was not too bad, although I didn’t quite fancy the swirly icing, which I scrapped it off. A bit hard though, but it had a good peanut butter taste I’m running low on snacks so I probably stock up tomorrow. Tan Tock Seng’s Pharmacy is having 20% discount on quite a lot of items, including Go Natural Energy bars that are going at less than $2! Happy Hour over. Need to start mugging again.

I’ll end off with a poem that harks back to my primary school days when we used to write in each others’ “autograph books”.

Make new friends,
But keep the old.
One is silver,
And the other is gold.

I’m not good at making new friends, but neither have I been able to keep the old. How do you guys keep a friendship going?

Mario is back for long-awaited 2D goodness. Since 1985, the Mario Bros. have been stomping on Go

Mario is back for long-awaited 2D goodness.

Since 1985, the Mario Bros. have been stomping on Goombas and trouncing Koopa shells, while entertaining us. Although most of Mario’s original platforming games since Super Mario 64 have been in 3D, that changed when New Super Mario Bros. was released on the Nintendo DS. It was a good game, but it lacked difficulty and that classic Mario feel. But, a sequel to New Super Mario Bros. has just been released on the Wii, New Super Mario Bros. Wii., the first 2D Mario game on a home console since Super Mario World.

But, does it deliver the classic 2D Mario gameplay we all know and love? New Super Mario Bros. Wii’s ”plot” is the same story you have seen in previous Mario games, Princess Peach gets kidnapped. This time, Bowser sends the Koopalings [who have returned after being absent in a Mario platformer since Super Mario World] and Bowser Jr. do his dirty work.

The gameplay of NSMBW is similar to Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario World. Mario is on a World Map like previous games, and from there he will have to clear levels in order to proceed. In order to clear a level, Mario must get to the end of a level and touch a flagpole [similar to Super Mario Bros.] in order to clear the level. There is also fortress and castle level in each world, and most fortress and castle levels end in a boss fight with a Koopaling. What is so great about this game, is that it takes elements from every Mario platformer, even Super Mario 64 and Yoshi’s Island! Mario can not only jump and stomp enemies, but he can ground pound, triple jump, spin jump, and even wall kick! You have two control options, the Wii Remote on its side and the Wii Remote with the Nunchuck. The Wii Remote on its side is the best control option, but it would have been nice to have the option to use the Classic Controller.

Toad Houses make a return, where you can play minigames to win extra lives or powerups. Like Super Mario Bros. 3, you can use powerups on the World Map before entering a level, a very useful feature. Most of the power-ups are power-ups returning form previous Mario games, such as the Fire Flower and Ice Flower. But, there are two new power-ups, the Penguin Suit and the Propeller Suit. The Penguin Suit is one of the best power-ups in the game. The Penguin Suit allows you to slide on ice, freeze enemies, and swim a lot more fluidly underwater. The Propeller Suit is a great power-up to use, because it allows you to fly up into the air and glide down by shaking the Wii Remote a little bit. My only problem with the controls are that some of the motion controls. Shaking the Wii Remote to spin jump or use the Propeller Suit is slightly annoying, and I wish there was an option to use the action with a button rather than motion controls. You can also ride on Yoshi is some levels, similar to Super Mario World. Riding on Yoshi is extremely fun. But, Yoshi only appears in certain levels, making his role smaller than his role in Super Mario World. I wished Yoshi had a bigger role. The boss fights are very fun, and the single-player mode’s difficulty is somewhat challenging, but nothing super-hard. You have the option of using the Super Guide if you die too many times. If you use the Super Guide, Luigi will appear and clear the level for you.

What is awesome is the fact that you can play the game up to four players, the first time we have seen four player action in a Mario platformer since Mario Bros. In multiplayer mode, you can play as Mario, Luigi, and two Toads. The multiplayer mode is very fun, but it is so chaotic that you and your friends will be dying more from getting in each other’s way then the levels and enemies themselves! Ultimately, the single-player mode is more fun. What is also a shame is that the multiplayer is also local only, online play would have been a very nice addition. There are also two multiplayer-only modes which are Free for All and Coin Battle. Free for All is the same as the main game mode, except you can choose just to play one level. Coin Battle is a mode where you have to get the most coins in a level. Both of these modes are fun and nice little diversions.

The graphics are basic, but they look decently nice. But in a 2D Mario platformer, gameplay matters more than graphics. The music and sound effects are fantastic, and even the voice dialogue is great. There is plenty of replay value in this game. There are three Star Coins in each level, and it will take you quit some time to get all the Star Coins. There is also plenty of secrets in NSMBW.

NSMBW is a fantastic platformer, and it is one of the best 2D platformers on the Wii. Buy it as soon as you can, you do not want to miss out on this great game!

Graphics:8/10-The graphics are nice, but simple.

Sound:9/10-The music, sound effects, and brief voice acting is fantastic.

Gameplay:9/10-The gameplay is fantastic. Both single-player and multiplayer mode are fantastic, but single-player mode is more fun.

Lasting Appeal:9/10 The game is somewhat long, and collecting all the Star Coins will take quite sometime.

Overall:9/10 Awesome

Traditionally baked in a cast-iron skillet, this classic American cake is rich, buttery, sweet and can be made with apples, pear, peach, apricot and more.

1 1/2 (20-ounce) cans (14 pineapple slices, fresh or canned)

14 pitted sweet cherries

4 tbsp unsalted butter

1/2 cup firmly packed brown sugar

1/4 pecan halves

1/2 cup sour cream

1 tsp vanilla

1 1/2 sifted cake flour

3/4 cup sugar

3/4 tsp baking powder

1/4 tsp baking soda

1/4 tsp salt

9 tbsp unsalted butter

Preheat oven to 350 F

Prep 10-inch Springform pan (optional)

Fruit Topping:

Drain pineapple slices and cherries and place on paper towel to absorb moisture. You will need 8 whole pineapple slices and 8 whole cherries. Halve 6 of the remaining slices and the remaining cherries.

1. In a skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Stir in brown sugar until moistened and remove from the heat. Pour mixture in a 10-inch spring form pan or keep in skillet.

2. Place 1 whole pineapple slice in the center of your 10-inch springform pan or skillet and 7 whole slices surrounding it. Place the halves slices side by side against the sides of the pan, the two cut edges down touching the brown sugar.

3. Place the whole cherries in the center of the whole pineapple slices; the halved cherries in the center of the halved cherries. Tuck the pecans into and gaps between the fruits.

Cake Batter:

1. In a medium bowl, combine yolks, about 1/4 of the sour cream, and vanilla. In a large bowl, combine the dry ingredients and mix to blend. Add butter and the remaining sour cream, mix on low until dry ingredients are moistened. Increase to medium or (high if using a hand mixer) for 1 1/2 minutes to develop the cake’s structure. scrape down the sides.

2. Gradually add the egg mixture to the batter in 3 batches, beating for 20 seconds after each addition to strengthen the cake’s structure. Scrape batter into fruit-lined skillet or 10-inch spring form pan, smoothing evenly with spatula.

3. Bake for 40 to 50 minutes or until golden brown and the cake tester inserted comes out clean. Run a small knife around the sides and invert at once onto a serving plate. If using a skillet, leave the skillet in place one or two minutes before lifting. Enjoy!

I figured applesauce and apple butter would fit the bill nicely. We always use applesauce as a compliment to the other dishes, but I like it in place of gravy with my turkey and I like using it as a condiment the next day for cold turkey and apple sandwiches. Yum! So i was excited to try products by Vermont Village Cannery. They make applesauce in the individual cups and jars in flavors Original Unsweetened, Raspberry, Mixed Berry, Peach, Strawberry-Banana, Maple Syrup, Tropical Mango, Cranberry and Cinnamon and they also make a Spiced Apple Butter. Basically, me being the fan of applesauce that i am, i’m in applesauce heaven. All of the products are naturally grown and made in Vermont, and the apples are purchased locally and are pesticide free. They also don’t have any added sugars or preservatives, and most of the products are organic if not all natural.
I got to try the Peach, Cinnamon, Strawberry Banana and Maple Syrup varieties of the applesauce, and the spiced apple butter. What did i think?

Each of the applesauces had a velvety smooth texture, which I absolutely loved. No chunks, pieces or even tiny blumps in these applesauces. It had a smooth feeling going down, and you can tell a lot of TLC was put into cooking and making the applesauces. I enjoyed every single flavor I tried.

Peach- this one had a strong and subtly sweet peach flavor, complimented nicely by the apple. I froze this one for about 30 minutes, and had a little peach slushie. Yum! 4 stars

Cinnamon- oooh. total dessert applesauce we got here. SO smooth, SO delicious. The cinnamon flavor is absolutely perfect, and it tastes as if it had been simmering with cinnamon sticks and cooked for a while to acheive such a good taste. 4 1/2 stars

Strawberry-Banana- this one had more of a tartness to it than the peach, probably due to the strawberry flavor. I didn’t taste much banana, but rather more of a strawberry-apple combination. It also had just the right amount of sweetness. 4 stars

Maple Syrup- another favorite. I was so excited to try this one, because i adore maple flavored things. It was the smoothest out of all of them texture wise, and had just a hint of maple flavor. It also had a bit of a lemon aftertaste. I heated it up in the microwave and it tasted like the inside of an apple pie. Deeeeeeee-lish. I would liek to crush some graham cracker crumbs and heat this up and place it on top- sort of like a mock pie! 4 1/2 stars

Spiced Apple Butter- Vermont Village Cannery is awarded BEST APPLE BUTTER EVER. Seriously. This stuff BLEW ME AWAY. It had a buttery (heh, no pun intended) consistency and it was sweet despite no added sugar. It had a nice blend of a nutmeg/cinnamon/maple taste, and I would totally eat it out of the jar (in fact, i did ) . It was perfect on waffles and heated up. I also used it in place of jelly for my usual PB&J and let’s just say I didn’t miss my sweet grape jelly at all. This stuff is SO good YOU MUST TRY IT. 5 stars!!!

Overall, obviosuly I loved these products. There great and perfect this time of the year, and anytime in my eyes I’m giving 4 stars to the applesauce, and 5 for the apple butter. I would like to try the tropical mango variety. It sounds delish! Clearly, Apples +Vermont Village Cannery = amazing. Keep up the good work!

What’s your favorite flavor of applesauce? Tell me here!

But the Princess is in another castle!

This is my third kid. I know that kids are gonna poop in the potty when they are good and ready. And nothing I am going to do can make my kid ready before his time. Sure, I can read books on the subject to him. Get him his own potty seat. Even select the big boy underpants he’ll get once he is potty-trained. But it’s going to happen when it’s going to happen.

Come to think of it, that’s a good approach to much of this parenting stuff.

A quick project I did a couple of weeks ago which I just got around to framing. I’m not sure who the castle belongs to but it’s from Super Princess Peach on DS – I thought the sprite was really cute and colourful

KGChart made it a little more blue than I would have liked, but it looks ok. I might do another one and pick the colours myself (if I have time).

Anyway I gave it a nice pink and cream mount and it’s now hanging above Ivy’s cot

To continue with yesterday’s post…. I need to talk about the elusive Peach Cobbler. My obsession started earlier this year when I went down to FL with the BF for a family thing…. on a cruise…. where you can get two of anything!

Every night we had a prix fixe style dinner. That first night I had peach cobbler… I had two. I thought that they’d have it again later during the week. Alas! Noooo! They did not.

I came back to NYC with a craving for Peach Cobbler. I don’t need to tell you twice.. I haven’t eaten a peach cobbler since that cruise. #1: because I can’t find it. #2: it needs to be awesome and preferably a large enough portion for satisfaction to set in.

Right now, I have some ideas. And so the search goes on….. Here is a listing of some restaurants serving Peach Cobbler.

1. Walter Foods, 253 Grand Ave (Williamsburg) – (site) Just look at that picture…. oh, goodness.

2. The General Greene, 229 Dekalb Ave. (Williamsburg) – (website) A review of the peach cobbler can be found on Serious Eats NY.

3. The Pink Tea Cup, 42 Grove St. (btwn Bleeker & Bedford, 1 train to Christopher St.) – Serving Southern food. Reviewed at Cheap Ass Foods. Cheap? I think that’s exactly what I need if I’m gonna be eating it every week. Peach Cobbler is $3.25!

4. Mara’s Homemade, 432 E. 6th St. – Peach Cobbler is $7. All desserts btwn $6 – $10. Their whole dessert menu looks good…. Red Velvet cake! Key Lime Pie! Chocolate Souffle! Pecan Pie! I’m gonna have to check this out. They serve Southern and Creole.

5. The Shark Bar Restaurant, 307 Amsterdam Ave. (UWS) – Reviews look lackluster for the restaurant. I haven’t read anything about the desserts, though. Peach Cobbler $5.50.

6. Virgil’s Barbecue, 155 W. 44th St. (Midtown) – Another restaurant with holding a stellar looking dessert menu. Banana Pudding, Key Lime Pie, Peanut Butter Pie, Warm Chocolate Chess Pie, Rice Pudding, and of course, Peach Cobbler. I think the cobbler changes to whichever fruits are in season. All desserts are $6.95 and a dessert sampler is available for $14.95.

I have decided that my favorite mediums to work with are watercolor, colored pencil, and chalk pastels. I like the way watercolor has so many effects you can do with it, I like the way colored pencil and pastels can be blended and built up gradually to get the look you want.

Neste domingo, 15, houve o lançamento mundial do novo jogo da Nintendo, New Super Mario Bros. Wii. E

Neste domingo, 15, houve o lançamento mundial do novo jogo da Nintendo, New Super Mario Bros. Wii.

Jogar qualquer Mario Bros. é sinônimo de nostalgia. A Nintendo sabe disso e aposta forte em New Super Mario Bros.

Saudoso até no som, New Super Mario Bros.

"Its me, Mario! Tá bão assim?"

The objective if this piece was to create a visual effect. I had wanted to do something with a pop up book for a really long time so I decided to do it for this piece. Growing up I loved the story of James and the Giant Peach. I read the book and constantly watched the movie with my sister. I wanted to choose a scene from the book to bring to life in this piece. I decided to depict the part where the seagulls pull the peach up and into the sky. I did everything in stop motion. I shot the peach on a homemade green screen and the rest was done in my backyard. It is short but I really liked the way it turned out and I hope you do too. Music By: Lydia

To celebrate my own Scorpio birthday this year I threw a Jello Party. I made my first savory jello for the occasion of chive cream cheese, cottage cheese, sour cream, and Worcestershire sauce. I also created an array of liquor filled mini jellos in such flavors as peach, mango, gooseberry, and mojito, all with either rum or vodka. In addition I made a pistachio dessert jello with whipped topping. I was introduced to D’Gari gelatin mixes which come in a variety of exotic flavors (like Walnut, Coconut, Chocolate, and Eggnog) and are made with either water or milk. I used these to make most of the jello minis and the pistachio jello.
