I recently visited a Philadelphia nail studio for a quick manicure. After I was all buffed and filed

I recently visited a Philadelphia nail studio for a quick manicure. After I was all buffed and filed, I heard the owner say to another customer, “The new Minx shipment is in!” I almost died.

I’ve written about been Minx before, and I’ve been itching to try it, but have had trouble finding a nail salon in the area that offers it. If you haven’t heard about Minx yet, it’s the trendy new alternative to polish that has already made devoted fans of Katy Perry, Fergie, Beyonce, Rihanna, and countless other celebrities.

Keep reading to learn how it was done (and view more pics).

Nail coverings are arranged on a clear plastic sheet, like stickers. (I found out after I had my Minx applied that the nail should be completely dry, and technically, soaks and hand massages are not part of a standard Minx manicure; I just made up my mind after this was already done, so don’t worry if they don’t give you those traditional manicure add-ons.) A nail tech trained in Minx application cuts each of the individual stickers to fit your nails, and presses them on. Your hands then rest under an ultrahot Minx-branded lamp, where the stickers melt onto your nail (without losing their shape or pattern). The nail tech then files off excess with a special plastic-looking Minx file (so as not to damage the nail coverings), leaving you with a customized manicure.

For my session, it was $40 for a manicure; a Minx pedicure was $60, and a full mani/pedi was $90. With this service, I got all of the basics of a standard manicure, like buffing, hand massage, cuticle oil, etc., so my nails were in tip-top shape before Minx was applied. The whole process took about an hour.

And the best part: the patterns! They are pure fun. I was torn between leopard, black-and-white houndstooth, and preppy pink and green plaid. Obviously, leopard won. (Although I really wanted the metallic leopard, but the salon didn’t have them in stock.)

To help you decide whether or not to get Minx’ed, here is a breakdown.

PROS:

Awesome patterns.

No chipping!

Lasts longer than a traditional manicure.

Fun to peel off.

Since it’s still so new, you’ve got a pretty good shot of being the only one you know sporting Minx.

It’ll get you lots of attention (if you’re into that kind of thing).

CONS:

Expensive.

It was supposed to last 2 weeks; the coverings lost their stickiness after 9 days.

Time-consuming to have applied.

Since it covers the whole nail, you can’t do touch-ups as you could with regular polish.

Your nails will grow as you wear Minx, so you’ll see a bit of a gap between the cuticles and the edges of the Minx coverings.

Overall, it was a fun diversion from a standard mani. I absolutely LOVED the results because they were so crazy and totally suited my personality. I love the customization available with Minx; you can pick a pattern or style to suit your individual mood. I got comments everywhere I went (people loved them!), from my friends and co-workers to the sales associate at J.Crew. (And yes, I do work in an office and I did wear them to work.)

Although I loved it, I probably won’t get it again anytime soon since it is so expensive. But they are unique and fun; it’s a manicure fit for a sexy minx.

Minx available at Christie’s Nails and Tanning, 4436 Main St., Philadelphia, PA, 215.508.1224.

Pampering yourself can get expensive but it doesn’t have to be. Most products can be found at your corner Dollar Tree or around the house. Your preference of product quality or brand name may add to the expense involved. But nothing beats the completeness your body enjoys when it is the sole focus of the pamperer’s attention. So before you dart over to your favorite body salon, take a few minutes.
Sermon audio can be found at http://www.sermoncloud.com/sovereign-king-church/ later this week. Ever

Sermon audio can be found at http://www.sermoncloud.com/sovereign-king-church/ later this week.

Every since I’ve begun training for the marathon, I’ve had to pay attention to something in which I’ve never even given much of a thought: my feet. You just can’t throw on any old shoes and go running. That might work in the short term, but in the long run (sorry for the pun), you’re feet are going to kill you in you are wearing the wrong shoes. When I started my training a few months ago, I just put on an old pair of running shoes, and I quickly realized that I was going to have some serious injuries if I didn’t get some new kick. The new shoes worked but the first week was like running on razor blades. I took them off from a run, and I had two pretty wicked blisters. Then I realized that certain socks prevented blisters, so I had to change my socks. All of a sudden, my feet, to which I barely had given a thought most of my life, were taking up a lot of my attention.

Now forgive me for taking up so much time discussing feet. For some folks, feet are pretty disgusting, and I must admit, when I those toenail fungus commercials are on TV, I get a little queasy. I cannot even begin to imagine how dirty and disgusting feet were back in Jesus’ day. They clearly wore shoes back in Rome, and they even called them an early version of the word “sock” but they really were just loose fitting sandals. We don’t get socks as we know until the late 1800’s and Nike didn’t produce shoes until 1964, so feet in Jesus’ day were pretty sore, filthy, and probably petty disgusting. Yet, in this week’s passage, God is going to call those feet, that were dirty and bruised and who knew what their toenails looked like without clippers, beautiful.

They are not beautiful because of any outward appearance, which is always the case in scripture. Beauty in scripture always comes from within as something lives out the purpose for which it was created. No, feet are beautiful because of the wonderful and grand mission in which they fulfill. In fact, they fulfill the mission that God gives to the His people, the church. So this week, as we continue in our series in Romans, let’s ask this Big Picture Question:

Big Picture Question: What grand and beautiful mission does God give the church?

Romans 10:14 How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? 15 And how are they to preach unless they are sent?

There is a reverse engineering nature to this verse and it details both how people have faith in Jesus and how the church is to help them have faith in Jesus. First of how, how do people have faith in Jesus? A person calls out to Jesus because they believe in Jesus because they heard about Jesus because someone preached about Jesus because that person who preached Jesus was sent by someone. You see the progression? People can’t call out Jesus unless they believe in Him. They can’t believe in Him unless they have heard about Him. They can’t hear about Him unless someone preaches Jesus to them. And no one can preach to them unless someone, namely the church, sends them.

Secondly, how does the church help people have faith in Jesus? The church sends someone out with the mission of preaching Jesus. That person goes out to preach. Someone hears about Jesus. That person then believes in Jesus. Then that changed renewed person calls out to Jesus.

Now amazingly, these are lines upon a continuum. They are not two separate straight lines, but instead, they are actually a circle. Let me explain. You see the church sends out ministers to preach just like Redeemer Church sent me to Garner to preach and start SK. But the church also sends out its members to proclaim the Gospel. Any church that is not a sending church is not a church at all. A church that does not send its people out or does not equip them to send is more of a club than a church. Churches send their folks. Here, we prepare and send folks into Garner and the surrounding areas to serve and proclaim and Jesus and hopefully one day, we will send out a church planter to start another church.

So now, I preach and the people of SK proclaim Jesus Christ as the hope for this world’s sin and sorrow. Someone, somewhere hears that message proclaimed whether it be the coffee shop, the school, the work place, wherever you are. That person hears the hope of Jesus, the Gospel, and find faith in Him. Then they call out Jesus to save them. Guess what happens next? They become part of God’s people, the church and then they are cared for, trained, and the sent out by the church. It is continual circle and cycle of the Gospel going forward. It is consistent with Jesus making and training the 12 disciples and then commanding them at the end of the book of Matthew for them to go out and make out disciples themselves.

That is how we see the mission of the church worldwide as well as SK encapsulated in these verses. We create community in CE Groups, Fight Club, Project Runway, so we can engage community caring for the EMS, the police, and at the Watering Hole and Sweet Monday, so folks will be brought into create community and start the whole process over again. This mission must always be protected as the foot soldiers if you will go out on the mission. And hear is where God calls them and their feet beautiful. Look at verse 15.

As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!” 16 But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed what he has heard from us?” 17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.

Paul’s choosing of image of both the feet of the Gospel and the preaching of the Gospel is not random. The task of preaching the good news is about going. It is about putting feet to the message of the Gospel. You can stand all day in your pantry and yell to the walls that people need to have faith in Jesus but God’s design is that someone has to hear the scriptures for them to believe it. You can foolishly assume that you live such a virtuous life that people want to ask how you became so Godly, but that rarely happens. And yes, you can stand on the street corner and yell at people to repent and maybe people are going to respond to the Gospel. However, putting on the feet of the Gospel is proclaiming the truths of Jesus in word and deed.

It is becoming part of people’s lives, loving with the agenda with grace and change, so that they not hear the preaching of the good news, but the see it. You have to purposefully place yourself in the lives of people so that you have an audience for the preached word. Now if you have ever purposefully set out to either tell people about Jesus or to serve them with the hope of telling them about Jesus, you know that just because you do that, that doesn’t mean people are necessarily going to believe. Because of this, many people give up or never even try to actively proclaim Jesus Christ. If that has been discouraging to you, you are in good company.

In verse 16, Paul quotes the prophet Isaiah who asked, “Has anyone ever believed from our preaching?” Isaiah was looking around at the many Jews who didn’t truly have faith in God and wondered if his preaching of repentance was useless. That might be the feeling some of you have or have had after tirelessly serving Garner these past few years. You might look around and think, “3 years of hard work and there are maybe 60 people here? Is this worth even trying?” I can relate. There have been days when I wondered if I was just wasting my time. I’ve wondered if any one has ever believed because I’ve preached. Isaiah wondered the very same thing.

And God’s response? 17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ. God’s response is, “People come to faith when they hear the preached word of Christ.” The job of the believer is to proclaim Jesus and the bringing of people to Jesus is the responsibility of God who declares, “I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion and I will have mercy on whom I have mercy.” Look at verse 18.

18 But I ask, have they not heard? Indeed they have, for “Their voice has gone out to all the earth, and their words to the ends of the world.”

This is the context of the beautiful feet that go with the gospel. The gospel is proclaimed, Jesus’ name is lifted up and the voice of hope goes out to the ends of the earth. That’s what we do here. We proclaim Jesus by serving this community and we will keep on doing it until Garner and the surrounding areas until everyone has heard the Gospel. Think of it practically. If this room decided right now that there was nothing that would keep you rrom serving your neighbors and proclaiming Jesus in humility and truth, then if you each did that every day, then the community of Garner would know and hear about Jesus in less than one year. Would everyone believe? Nope. But our job is to reflect the love of Christ in the proclaiming of Jesus to the ends of the earth. Let’s start with Garner and the surrounding areas.

Paul reminds us of the difficult task at hand in verses 19-21.

19 But I ask, did Israel not understand? First Moses says, “I will make you jealous of those who are not a nation; with a foolish nation I will make you angry.”

20 Then Isaiah is so bold as to say, “I have been found by those who did not seek me; I have shown myself to those who did not ask for me.” 21 But of Israel he says, “All day long I have held out my hands to a disobedient and contrary people.”

Paul tells us a little story by speaking of Israel’s rejection of God and God’s subsequent bringing in of Gentiles. Israel did not believe or respond to the prophets calls of repentance. God then too His grace and truth and gave it to…us…not Jewish folks. Israel got mad. They thought that God was their property by birthright. Through Isaiah, God told them in response, “Um I’m hanging with some different folks now. Folks that don’t take the grace of God for granted.

You want to know why the Gentiles, and again remember that is us, why we shouldn’t take God for granted? Look at verse 20. We didn’t ask God to show Himself to us when we didn’t believe. God showed Himself to us by His own will. God controls the revealing of Himself and He chooses to do that through the preached word like Isaiah’s and yours. Now that is the beautiful message of the Gospel. The fact that God would use you and me to proclaim Jesus to the world makes you beautiful as well. The feet of those who bring good news are beautiful. Now, folks struggle with this. I know many of you struggle to think that anything about yourself is beautiful. But here is what makes you and the message of the Gospel beautiful. Let me read from John 13.

13:1 Now before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart out of this world to the Father, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. 2 During supper, when the devil had already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray him,

3 Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going back to God, 4 rose from supper. He laid aside his outer garments, and taking a towel, tied it around his waist. 5 Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him.

6 He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, do you wash my feet?” 7 Jesus answered him, “What I am doing you do not understand now, but afterward you will understand.” 8 Peter said to him, “You shall never wash my feet.” Jesus answered him, “If I do not wash you, you have no share with me.” 9 Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, not my feet only but also my hands and my head!” 10 Jesus said to him, “The one who has bathed does not need to wash, except for his feet, but is completely clean. And you are clean, but not every one of you.” 11 For he knew who was to betray him; that was why he said, “Not all of you are clean.”

12 When he had washed their feet and put on his outer garments and resumed his place, he said to them, “Do you understand what I have done to you?

13 You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am. 14 If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. 15 For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you. 16 Truly, truly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. 17 If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.

18 I am not speaking of all of you; I know whom I have chosen. But the Scripture will be fulfilled, ‘He who ate my bread has lifted his heel against me.’ 19 I am telling you this now, before it takes place, that when it does take place you may believe that I am he. 20 Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever receives the one I send receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me.”

31 When he had gone out, Jesus said, “Now is the Son of Man glorified, and God is glorified in him. 32 If God is glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself, and glorify him at once. 33 Little children, yet a little while I am with you. You will seek me, and just as I said to the Jews, so now I also say to you, ‘Where I am going you cannot come.’ 34 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. 35 By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

Dazzle Dry Advanced Vegan Nail System used by Professionals. Non-yellowing formula without Nitrocellulose and the harmful ingredients of Camphor, Formaldehyde, Toluene, and Phthalate.

Directions:

We were sent Dazzle Dry 3 Piece Nail System, it consists of Nail Prep 1oz, Dazzle Dry Base Coat .5oz and Dazzle Dry Top Coat .5oz.
Prepare nails by cleaning entire nail surface with Nail Prep.
- Done easily with a small squirt type bottle in the kit, and a cotton ball. Clear liquid.
Generously apply ase Coat & allow to dry thoroughly.
- We applied generously, and it dried quickly. Much faster than we expected.
Apply 1-2 coats of Color Lacquer & 1 coat of Top Coat.
- We applied our Color Lacquer, which looked very dull as it dried. So dull I was debating how fast I would be taking this off. Once we applied the top Coat, complete shine returned to the nail color. So much shine, that when our nails dried, we thought they were still wet. One hand was dry as I finished painting the other hand.

Dazzle Dry 3 Piece Nail System used by professionals is now available for your use at home or to take to the salon for your exclusive personal use.

Instructions are easy to read, and easy to follow. My 11 year old daughter and I painted our nails together. We love to try beauty products together. It creates “Mom & Me” time! Her nails are finished, and she’s in bed. Under other circumstances or using other “fast dry” nail polishes, I would not have let her paint her nails this late in the evening.
Even being fast dry, the Nail Lacquer does not goop up, or get thick on the brush, as you race to finish your nails.

If you don’t want to add color using the Dazzle Dry Quick Dry Nail System, you can do that too! Simply skip applying the color/laquer, and go straight for the high gloss, top coat.

We were dazzled. If you have used this, or purchase this soon, I’d love to hear your results too! Drop me a line.

Woke up this morning to rain, a great day for my birthday pedicure, a splurge I seldom indulge in. It was a great experience. I chose a local place Healani’s Nails on Papalina Road in Kalaheo. There I received an expert pedicure with a great foot massage, ending with hot towels. I had it done French and was pleased there was no extra charge.

pretty pedicure, silver sandals, tan feet and red sand

Kalei, was friendly and professional; we talked about the local beaches I’ve been visiting and she gave me advice where to eat and buy things. The salon is simple but immaculate and on the way to Kukuiolono Golf Course. A golf outing with a pedicure is a fabulous idea and Healani’s expert service and non-resort prices can’t be beat.

Sugar Polish

Exfoliation is an important part of any beauty care regimen; yet many people are unfamiliar with the fact that natural sugar is a great exfoliant–sloughing dead skin without stinging. Lypossage®’s Sugar Polish utilizes sugar’s exfoliating capabilities to leave skin feeling smooth and silky. Just a small handful is enough to revitalize your skin.

In addition to the sugar, this polish contains green tea & Ginkgo Biloba for antioxidants and bioflavanoids; comfrey, calendula, and cucumber as soothing emollients; and St. John’s Wort, Sage, & Rosemary, which aid in healthy circulation. Moreover, the Sugar Polish comes in four scents! Choose from relaxing Lavender, invigorating Eucalyptus/Mint, delectable Raspberry Creme, or light Sugared Grapefruit. Pair with your other favorite Lypossage® bodycare products (i.e. bath bon bons, cleansing milk, etc.), and create your own themed spa day!

Lypossage®’s Sugar Polish is a wonderful addition to any skin care routine, and can be used in the shower after shaving, or as a foot/leg scrub for pedicures, and a hand/arm scrub in manicure treatments.

To order your own Sugar Polish, please visit the Lypossage® website. CLICK HERE.

After offering to accept the gift cards of a local spa that was suddenly closing it’s doors, m

After offering to accept the gift cards of a local spa that was suddenly closing it’s doors, much of my week consisted of conversations sounding something like this:

“Hi, I just saw on television that you were going to be accepting Light Touch gift cards after they close, is this true?” ”Yes, ma’am, it’s true.” “Really? My daughter just bought this for me in October and when I heard they were closing, I tried to make an appointment to use it and they wouldn’t let me. When I heard you were willing to take the gift cards, I didn’t believe it. Thank you so much! That is the nicest thing!! I guess now I have a new spa, when can I make an appointment?”

Trust me, there were times after I made the decision I wondered if I really was crazy! What on earth have I gotten myself into? After all the positive feedback from everyone and seeing the benefit to my business, I know I ‘m really crazy like a fox. This is one of the best business decisions I’ve ever made. I knew that The Light Touch, who were in business for 28 years, had a very loyal customer base. By giving the customer more than they bargained for, we are creating goodwill that will last a very long time. I just knew that if I could get those customers through my doors, I could earn their business.

My bread and butter is the regular customer. We have folks that have been coming to Serenity since it opened 6 years ago, and a handful that have stayed with me for over 25 years! The value of a long-term customer is worth far more than the time we’ll put in giving a complimentary service. Are we getting paid for the gift cards? No, we’re not. But my staff and I are willing to forgo our commission on the service in order to earn the repeat business of the customer. We are confident that the service you receive will wow you, and by earning your trust we’ll earn your business. Then when you decide to treat a friend or loved one to a spa experience, you can purchase one of our gift cards with the confidence that we will not only be here to fulfill their service, but it will be the best darn spa experience they’ve ever had!

Here’s the fine print:

Small spa with big heart offers to accept Light Touch Gift cards after they close their doors on November 14. Serenity Spa in Anchorage has offered to honor The Light Touch Gift cards until June 2010. Up to 10 cards will be accepted each week for services including facials, massage, manicures, pedicures, microdermabrasion, glycolic peels and waxing. Unfortunately, we can not accept expired gift cards or unused packages. However, we will send a coupon for a 1/2 price service to any former Light Touch customer that signs up for our e-mails at Please call 245-6484 to schedule an appointment.

Another long day?

Soothe your tired legs and feet with the refreshing tingle of peppermint and the warmth of ginger.

Generously apply this rich butter and feel it melt into a luxurious oil that penetrates your skin thanks to the perfect blend of cocoa and shea butter with grapeseed oil to tone and sweet almond oil to soften.

Put on a cozy pair of socks so this product can work its wonders overnight, but don’t forget to wash your hands before you sleep becuase these invigorating oils might keep you awake

This item is shipped, by default, in a completely reuseable 125 mL canning jar; however, if you would like to reduce your shipping costs, this product can be mailed in a carefully packed resealable plastic bag, which you can then empty into a container of your choice.

To clarify this distinction, the item price currently reflects 72 g / 2.53 oz of product in a canning jar and the shipping price defaults for the weight associated with the canning jar.

If you type “resealable bag” into your “notes to seller”, I will refund $1.50 for the jar, and the difference in shipping price. Please enquire about rates for your area.

An all natural item, this foot butter has been tested extensively by us and our friends (some of whom are, admittedly, party animals), but all the same, please use the same precautions you would with any other new skin care product.

I believe a little indulgence is good for everyone; from time to time you just have to treat yoursel

I believe a little indulgence is good for everyone; from time to time you just have to treat yourself. And for what reason? Merely because you deserve it! This is my philosophy and following it makes me happy. Some women love to shop, others prefer getting their hair done: my indulgence lies in the quiet of a home salon that I like to frequent every 5 or 6 weeks. Lying quietly, and enjoying a pedicure is my thing. Just over a year ago I decided that pedicures were something I wanted to treat myself to on a regular basis. I love the relaxing atmosphere, and the way my feet look and feel after a good soak, scrub, massage and polish. It was very easy to follow my pedicure schedule in the pre-Niko days, but once he was born I found myself wondering: Will I ever have time for another pedicure?

Day after day I noticed my old pedicure dwindling, slowly being clipped off by my own clippers, the polish growing out, and me left yearning for yet another visit to my esthetician. But days and weeks passed and there really just didn’t seem to be a good time to go, until yesterday. Borys had the day off work, so after we payed our respects to the veterans I headed out to get my feet done, and it was so worth it! In talking with my pedicurist I found out that she is open for business in the evenings as well; this was music to my ears because it means the next time I need a pedicure I can wait until Borys is home from work, he can Niko-sit and I can go off and indulge in this lovely little foot treat! Happy feet make for a happy mommy!
