I started the process of registering ”Seeds of Insight” as a company. So far I have reserved the name with the Companies Office of Jamaica.

Here are some of the reasons why I decided to do so.

1)            The Antonio Thompsons of Jamaica and the world;

2)            The feedback I received at the EduVision 2009 Conference;

3)            The feedback from Jennifer and Bethany on the book;

4)            The feedback from my mute readers;

5)            The feedback, the feedback, the feedback…and the thousands of views;

6)            Mrs. Prospect’s remarks were like Pegasus himself;

7)            To tell more stories;

9). The technology was working efficiently and I was not even ”sweating” yet.

For example, I noticed that that my bio was translated multiple times into Spanish on November 25, 2009.

Super cool!

Hallo zusammen!

Ganz sicher.
Doch.
Ganz sicher.

Viele Grüße,
Thomas

Black Friday rocks! I love it when Threadless has great sales, and I had a hunch that there would be something planned for this lovely day after Thanksgiving. Even if you’ve already shopped at Threadless this week, there’s always room for more sweet graphic t-shirts. The holidays are just around the corner, so you can gift them as well! This deal will only last until 11:59pm CT, so don’t delay!

Here’s what I picked up from this fantastic sale:

Budget airline Pegasus is stepping up their flights to Turkey – and it’s looking like the extra flig

Budget airline Pegasus is stepping up their flights to Turkey – and it’s looking like the extra flights will mean a property boom.
The Turkish airline will have 17 new flights each week from the UK starting early next year.

The increased coverage will not only play a part in increasing tourist numbers to Turkey’s most popular areas, but it will likely mean a property boom as visitors seek to snap up investment properties and holiday homes along the Turkish Riviera.

Pegasus chairman Ali Sabanci said in the first 10 months of this year Pegasus Airlines grew by 46 percent on international routes and 41 percent on domestic routes.

Flights will include London to Istanbul, Bodrum and Dalaman; Manchester to Antalya and Dalaman, and Birmingham to Antalya and Bodrum.

Pegasus are set to offer 17 more flights a year from January.

Figures show that British visitors to Turkey have been growing at a whopping rate of 20 per cent each year for the past five years. And thanks to the strong Euro, this figure could be up to 25 per cent higher this year.

Pegasus alone has more than doubled its UK passengers in under a year, having carried over 200,000 holidaymakers to Turkey in the January to October period. The airline is set to boost its fleet with the addition of 23 new Boeing 737-800s, at a cost of £1.38 billion, and is rumoured to be negotiating for even more.

This can only be good news for British holidaymakers, who now have even more opportunity to make the most of what the Turkish Riviera has to offer.

"Most Americans do not know slavery not only exists in the world today, it flourishes," said Ron Soodalter, co-author of The Slave Next Door, in his presentation in the Pegasus Ballroom Monday morning.

"Somewhere around 27 million people are in bondage in the world today. Now, that’s over twice the number as were trafficked in chains in the entire 350 years of the African slave trade."

Soodalter, an active abolitionist and historian, kicked off International Education Week at UCF as the keynote speaker for the Second Annual International Breakfast. The Slave Next Door presentation concluded the three-part series on "Slavery’s Resurgence" facilitated by the Office of the Special Assistant to the President for Global Perspectives and the International Services Center.

The series began with Somaly Mam, a Cambodian human rights activist, former slave and author of The Road of Lost Innocence: The True Story of a Cambodian Heroine, when she shared her experiences in September.

In October, Micheline Slattery, a human-rights activist and former restavek, or domestic child slave, in both Haiti and the United States, addressed about 300 attendees.

Modern-day slavery includes around 800,000 men, women and children trafficked each year around the world. According to the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Web site, about 17,500 of them end up in the United States, with a high percentage received in Florida.

Soodalter suggests a simple Google search on human trafficking for astounding results.

In spite of major federal legislation and anti-trafficking laws passed in 43 states, 103 human-trafficking convictions have resulted, Soodalter said.

Trafficking remains hidden, is largely unreported and difficult to identify. According to the 2009 Trafficking in Persons, or TIP, report, published by the U.S. Department of State, forced labor/involuntary servitude represents the majority of human-trafficking cases in the world. The co-author of Soodalter’s book, Kevin Bales, wrote the original 156-page TIP report, titled “Trafficking Persons in the United States — A Report to the National Institute of Justice.”

“The whole thing is disserving and extending,” said retired UCF foreign language professor David Gurney. “It contributes to the antagonism from people in underdeveloped countries to Western civilizations or Western countries.”

In the 1850s, purchasing a slave ran roughly $1,200, the equivalent of around $40,000 in today’s money. The reality is purchasing a slave today costs as little as $100, which makes them affordable and disposable, Soodalter said.

A trafficking victim lives in fear of violence or the threat of violence daily, he said.

Shawn Cox, victim witness coordinator and licensed clinical social worker with the United States Attorney’s Office, advocates that trafficking is a crime of absolute power over someone. According to the report Cox co-authored, “Victims of Human Trafficking and Trauma,” the psychological consequences of a victim are similar to the consequences of severe or chronic child abuse or experiencing acts of terrorism.

"In case you thought slavery doesn’t touch you, guess again," Soodalter said. "Chances are, the clothes you wear, the food you eat, has been touched by slavery."

The good news is there have been some inroads made recently in the area of agricultural servitude, Soodalter said. When Taco Bell refused to stop buying produce picked by enslaved workers in an effort known as the "Ban the Bell" campaign, it set a precedent that several other companies, including McDonalds, A&W, Long John Silver’s, Pizza Hut, Whole Foods, Chipotle and Burger King, have followed, Soodalter said.

"The message is clear," Soodalter said. "Slavery and worker abuse will not be tolerated. Not here, not now, not ever."

Mark Freeman, public affairs coordinator for the Global Perspectives Office, said they are hoping to continue the series next spring since response has been incredible. Because of the series last spring, students on campus were so spurred into action they formed the unofficial student group “Students Against Slavery @ UCF,” Freeman said. “Students Against Slavery @ UCF” has a Facebook page, and Harry Coverston serves as the faculty advisor for the group.

"Spreading the word is the most important thing," said Frank Hegedus, a senior political science and international relations major. "There is only right now."

Antonio us now in State care! Antonio is now in State care! He was escorted from the Jamaica Pegasu

Antonio us now in State care!

Antonio is now in State care! He was escorted from the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel by a tall man in a peach-beige shirt who knew a lot about the behaviour of boys in Places of Safety in Jamaica but did not seem to know the direction to Antonio’s temporary home at St. Joesph’s (not the real name of the Place of Safety).

We all assured Antonio that his stay at St. Josephs would be short. The authorities said that he would only spend the weekend there and that he would appear before the judge on Monday, November 23, 2009. They said that the process must be followed. The judge will make a decision on Monday on where he goes next.

Source: This photo is copied from trudyboom.wordpress.com/feed.

The Pegasus Pride (a poem for Antonio)

He cried in my presence and I wondered why

Was he missing his mother with emotions high?

Did he feel betrayed by all of us who tried?

Or was he overcome by the Pegasus Pride

He pointed to his elbow on his left hand side

He wanted to make sure I saw that it was wide

It was a nasty shiny scar that extended deep

Sewn in haste and covering the surface at the crease

He asked for help to buy a much needed cellular phone

He already had some cash folded, Michael Manley’s own

He knew that it could be secured at the government home

But that was not his main concern or what made him frown

Antonio was so happy to see me at the Pegasus yesterday

His face lit up when I walked in on black and gray

I hugged him like how I would hug my other boys

The first hug, the holding of hands and some joys

Allison was there, Novia too, Nada stood and Robert sat true

Saccsha, Marva, Audrey Budhai and Mrs. Clark sat down too

I then felt when She moved away gracefully through the door

Deep feelings abound as Antonio cried feeling almost secure

We waited outside the hotel while Novia got his clothes

One little shopping bag he had and all that he knows

He hugged me tight again, this time lifting me off the ground

I was reminded of His strength and young men profound

The Pegasus Stride (a poem for Tamian)

Yesterday Tamian called me from the Possibility Programme

He was there to register Antonio as planned

But the lady told him that there was no space

Not until January she said, when we will place

But Allison told us that they had room for three boys

That was last week after she saw Jerusalem’s flaws

Were all the spaces taken in such a short time?

Or was this another example of the bureaucracy line?

Tamian called me at about 11:12 am and then at 11:43

My last call to him was from my home to Possibility

I tried to call three more times but no answer drew

I received Allison’s call at 11:42 and after a minute I knew

Tamian was at the Pegasus on stage with Antonio in stance

Making his case again for rights, justice and assistance

“Ann Marie, you should have been here to see and hear”

The Pegasus Stride caused a loud silence as they all stared

I pulled on a clean blouse and jumped in my dirty jeans

Rushed through the door without telling Miss Liz please

As I drove I thought about Tamian’s frustration again

Why he had to Stand Up for justice in front of TV camera plain

When I came home I sat in my car and waited for the news

There in the headlines it was, another story about refuse

Street children especially boys now over six thousand lurk

According to the report, all over Jamaica they live and work

It was about 3:40 when Mr. Berry from the OCA called to explain

He was trying to be very sensitive about the case while investigating

I told him about what I saw earlier at the Jamaica Pegasus Station

Then ended our conversation on the SDA plans for a home in Clarendon

Saccsha Ebanks called at around 4:20 and said she spoke in grace

As revealed in The Best of Business, a book published by The Economist in collaboration with Pegasus Books in 2009, William Gibbs (1790-1875) became an exceptionally wealthy man by selling guano, seabird dung, that is rich in nitrates and phosphates, and harvested off the coast of South America from the middle of the 19th century and used as (what else?) fertilizer. He and his brother George signed their first contract with the Peruvian government in 1842 and in 1858 imported 300,000 tons of guano to Britain. Gibbs also built a number of churches as well as a mansion for himself, at a cost of 70,000 pounds (the profits from just one year’s trade), Tyntesfield, a Victorian Gothic Revival estate near Wraxall, North Somerset, England, in the Vale of Nailsea, seven miles from Bristol. In 2002, it was acquired by the National Trust for 25 million pounds.

As I read this brief account of William (“The Turd Seller”) Gibbs, I recalled Randy Mayeux’s Superfreakonomics blog post about The Parable of the Horseshit. (By the way, the etymology of word “shit” is “top of the soil.”) Perhaps I have not recognized, much less appreciated, the value of all of my efforts that did not immediately produce the desired results, of all of my consulting proposals that were rejected, of all of my book reviews that were not well-received, etc. There may be a few uncashed checks buried somewhere under them.

Whats up all. Sorry about the lack of content from me. I have been fairly under the press lately. Bu

Whats up all.

Sorry about the lack of content from me. I have been fairly under the press lately. But still, thats no excuse.

This week it’s all about the Dutch Hardcore! This is not what it is normally known as. It has many names some of which are: Hardcore, Industrial Hardcore, “True” Hardcore, Dutch Hardcore or the most common iteration; Gabber/Gabba (for the purists among you: Nu Gabber… Wankers).

The term Gabber/Gabba translates loosely to “Friend” in Dutch and let me preface this by saying that there is NOTHING friendly about Gabber. It focuses on strong, heavy and distorted basslines that run a fairly similar tone through the track. Some of my more Death Metal inclined friends are very adamant in their description of Gabber as the “Death Metal of Electronica” and I would be in remiss to deny that this is a fairly good description.

I enjoy a fair bit of extreme metal, I must say so that puts me in a good position to enjoy Gabber. For those who may like a bit of the louder stuff in their musical diet, give this a shot. It will blow your socks off.

Now for some technical information. It is generally played at 140-180 BPM and is the stylistic precursor to Happy (UK) Hardcore, Hardstyle, Jumpstyle and a few others. Another fact that may help is that like most faster Dance

Music (or most Dance music in general), it is played in a 4/4 time signature (basically 1-2-3-4 for each bar. You can count it out a home).

With all of that talk out of the way, let’s get on to the review shall we.

I have been listening to Gabber for a long time and I have built up a few favourites in the last year. Some are new, some are older. I will write about 2 of my absolute favourite Gabber tracks ever: Ophidian – Pegasus and Kutski Vs Bioweapon – One (Endymion Remix)

First off: Ophidian – Pegasus

I am going to preface this by saying that Ophidian refers to himself as Experimental Gabber and is by no means the norm in the style.

For those who don’t know, the term “Ophidian” refers to snakes and for those who live under rocks and speak entirely in grunts, Pegasus is the son of Poseidon and is a winged horse. Cool? FUCK yes!

Anyway, the track starts off with some industrial sounding scratching which evolves when the traditional Gabber bass is added. It then starts going haywire when a trancelike melody is added and the drums start playing in a breakbeat style. This is particularly hard to get right but when you consider that it keeps its 4/4 time signature, it is amazing. This is partly why I like this track so much.

The track is quite emotional for Gabber, most of which features misogyny, profanity, drugs and violence. The barely audible words that are spoken during the verse (refer to my first review for clarification) are as follows:

Sing for me

I will smile and touch your hair
And dare to sing along when I know the words
For we are at best in a blended voice, and thought, and flesh

There is too much to be lost in the world
Love is, and was, and will be regent, regret wets sweated sins

This is from a romantic poem by american poet William F. DeVault entitled “The Philosophy of Dreams”. Of the whole poem, only these lines actually resonate with me. Yes I listened to the poem after hearing this song. Moving along.

The build-up after the verse and moving into the chorus is played in a minor key and sounds somewhat regretful. None the less, it builds up to an amazing climax into the chorus which is just powerful.

I honestly don’t know what else to say about this track other than, despite it being released in 2008 and that I
have listened to it so many times, it still drops my jaw to the ground. It is one of my favourite tracks of all time.

This is a must listen.

I give it an outstanding 9/10

Now, Kutski Vs Bioweapon – One (Endymion Mix)

Ok, I don’t know much about Kutski but I can tell you about Bioweapon and Endymion. Bioweapon are a Sydney based production team made up of two of Australia’s best Happy (UK) Hardcore producers turned Hardstyle producers. If you have been following them at all, they are Sam Gonzalez (or Orbit1) and Corey Soljan (or Inverse). They were a powerhouse in the Happy Hardcore scene and now are making an obvious impression on the Hardstyle genre.

“One” is a strange track to say the least, both within the Hardstyle and Gabber scenes. It uses a sample from “Three Dog Night – One Is The Loneliest Number” which makes me confused already. How did they turn such a song into such a Hard Dance anthem. It is definitely one that we will be hearing at clubs that play this sort of music.

Endymion is a powerhouse of the Gabber scene and makes a significant contribution to the evolution of the music. This track is amazing in itself but the remix just blows my mind.

The track starts out with a soft almost trance sounding set of synth-strings and a woman repeating “one” Which is obviously sampled because it is cut constantly up. Then the bass comes in. It is a much smoother sounding bass than what is normally used in Gabber. The slow breaks and buildups that feature over this track make it distinctive and memorable and the melody is just amazing. Exceptional use of triplets are all over the melody of this track.

I urge you to listen to this track.

I give it an exceptional 8/10

Thanks guys. I will see if I can get a Gabber mix going for you on Tuesday between packing for going back home. I will see you next week Thursday for my regular review!

If you have any requests for track reviews, please send them to me at james.prince1@gmail.com

Cheers all

Hallo zusammen!

Klasse!

So sprachen nacheinander die User Starwarschef, Sir Mythos und Putenbrust.
Freut mich echt extrem!

Thomas

Emre Kelly

Audience members rose to their feet and exploded with applause when UCF junior Michael Newman accepted the title of Mr. UCF 2010, beating out nine other contestants in the annual scholarship pageant.

Students watched as 10 students dressed as zombies took the stage in the Pegasus Ballroom in the Student Union on Friday as they danced to Michael Jackson’s “Thriller.”

Newman, who won the judges’ favor and the audience popular vote, took home over $2,000 in scholarship awards courtesy of Student Government Association and the UCF Alumni Association. He said his main objective as Mr. UCF this year would be to spread awareness.

“I carry the world on my backpack,” Newman said as he performed a poem he found online called The Renditions of a Homeless Man for the talent competition. Newman dressed in layers of jackets and carried a sign that read: “Hungry any spare change helps please.”

“Students a lot of times feel disconnected from the community around us. Two miles down the road there are people that are homeless,” Newman said. “There are a lot of people that stay within the circle at UCF because they don’t really understand or realize what’s going on around us.”

Newman said during his interview that he wants to bridge that gap between the community, students and faculty, which he believes is part of the UCF Creed.

Newman is currently an ambassador on the President’s Leadership Council, the community service chair of the Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity and a member of the Student Sustainability Alliance.

The pageant winner was not the only student heavily involved in campus and community activities vying for a shot at the Mr. UCF title. Spectacular Knight and Campus Activities Board Director Samantha Nemeroff said 15 students auditioned for the event, but only ten competed in the pageant.

“They represented UCF in a great way,” Nemeroff said. “They are all very involved in the school and the community. Their talents were impressive, too.”

Jonathan Parker sang the bluesy Porgy & Bess classic “Summertime.” Matthew Miller, clad in a glitter jacket and rhinestone glove, moonwalked to a version of “Billy Jean” by Michael Jackson. Marcus Williams dressed in a red and white checkerboard shirt, and performed a hip-hop line dancing routine to a music mix. James Jarman broke out the red vinyl records and turntables, scratched and spun a house and Latin mix.

Tyson Nales, Mr. UCF 2009, and Dasha Gonzalez, Miss UCF 2010, hosted the pageant with a panel of five judges. The bulk of the contestants’ scores came from the talent competition followed by their audition interview, formal wear, beachwear and a final on-stage question.

The scholarship pageant began in 1989 and benefits both students and the community. Sidney Porter, Sunshine Princess and Lake Highland student, donated a midback ponytail of hair to Locks of Love and the audience favorite vote raised $920 for Children’s Miracle Network.

SGA provided scholarship awards of $400 to the third runner-up, Warren Jackson, $650 to second runner-up, James Jarman, and $1,000 to first runner-up, Marcus Williams.

Additionally, Jonathan Parker won $500 in awards for nonfinalist best interview and top ad sales. David Cohn won $350 for nonfinalist best talent and David Yu won Mr. Congeniality and $150.

The pageant is open to all full-time male undergraduate and graduate students who hold a minimum 2.5 GPA.

Nemeroff said she can relax for a week before she begins planning for the Miss UCF pageant, with 25 girls set to compete for the title on Feb. 6, 2010.

My childhood was filled with magic. Real magic. I swear it was. I still believe it.

As an adult, when it comes to practical things, I’m a realist and a bit of a cynic. But I still refuse to stop believing in fairytales and all that implies.

I long ago lost touch with my friends Sarah and Rachel Cook (they were sisters). And the last contact I had with Sarah was a letter telling me all about their current lives. It wasn’t good. Neither of these beautiful, talented, imaginitive, intelligent girls grew up to be well-balanced women. And it was incredibly sad to me. I intended to answer that letter and keep in touch, but I lost track of time and never got around to it and now I don’t know where she is anymore.

Pegacorn

So, I get to remember them both as my partners in fantasy.

My mother returned to work full time when I was in second grade, which meant I had to start attending an after school program called Latchkey. This is where I met Sarah and Rachel. Sarah was a year ahead of me in school and Rachel a year behind. Their father was a professor at Elmira College in the drama department. Perhaps that is where they got their abilities from.

We believed in unicorns, Pegasus (although at the time, we didn’t know Pegasus was a creature out of Greek mythology) and “pegacorns.” A pegacorn is a winged unicorn.

Pegasus

Sarah and Rachel could draw, something I could never do. They used to draw me beautiful pictures of all these creatures and I hung the pictures on my bedroom walls. The pictures are long since gone, but live on in my mind.

For some reason, I saw more rainbows in that short period of years of my life than I have in all the rest of the years of my life. I’m still in awe of them when I have the privelege of finding one. But back then, we would try to find the end of the rainbow, fully believing there was a leprechaun’s pot of gold at the end of it. If only we could get there. If only I still could. Because, despite all I know about prisms and water bending light and all the science behind rainbows, I still believe there’s much more to them than that. The science is just a ruse to fool the unbelieving and stop them from finding the truth about the world.

A unicorn with a rainbow

I think every little girl has a memory of spinning in circles in an open field somewhere, getting dizzy and falling down in a heap. We did that. A lot. But to us, this spinning and getting dizzy and falling down was an entry into our fantasy world. I would close my eyes upon hitting the ground and picture vast open fields of green with a blue sky, puffy white clouds and rainbows all around. There was a castle there. I was the princess who lived in the castle. And I could work magic spells in this world in a way I couldn’t here on earth. Because, while I believed magic was real here, I couldn’t do it myself … yet.

We pretended we were characters from the cartoons we watched. We were no Looney Toons girls. We watched He-Man, She-Ra, Thundercats. Anything set in another world with serious and fantastical themes. It was so much fun.

We played on swings, soaring so high we were sure we would flip around the top bar. This was, in fact, our goal. We didn’t really think that doing so could end in our deaths or at least maiming. I don’t think we cared.

The tire swings in our school playground were the type that swung around in circles without the chains getting tangled up. We used to get them going really fast, then one of us would stand up, hold on to the chains and let go with our feet and “fly.”

Oh, what a time we had! How I miss those girls. How I miss those days. When I think about going back to a time past in my life, it is that time.

Wherever you are, Sarah and Rachel, I love you. And I still believe. I hope you do, too.

Up for sale!

A nice custom Breyer horse, made into an alien creature with dragon wings and unusual coloring.

Though it may seem like a weird color, I saw this coloring on a real horse. I couldn’t believe it myself either. A red roan with dapples, and black mane and tail. Perhaps some of you saw it too. It was in an old Patrick Swazey movie where he helped a town get rid of some bullies. The horse was in the coral with others at the barn he was staying. It just seemd like an amazing color.

I named this horse, “Bacon” because he is mostly bacon colors, well burnt bacon anyways.

He’s up for sale on Bonazle at the moment, so he could go anytime. Shipping included.

There are more detail and a link to the video in Bacon’s listing.

One of a kind that no collector has.
