Do not think of this post as simply an endorsement for a certain brand of notebooks. This post is encouraging the pen and the page traveling with you as you go about your interesting life. How would you ever recognise if your life was interesting? One can often forget the little things that happen in your day that make that day or even that fleeting moment special. You could try to type it into your mobile phone, or open up your laptop to type it down however these technological means of get lost in the ether of bits and bytes.

I like to put stickers on my own.

Having a good notebook on your person is advisable, and the Awesome Geek is always coming across crazy random happenstances. Therefore he or she must be prepared to jot them down quickly for a blog post, a comic strip or even a published memoir. The world is your oyster, but you can’t rely on your noggin to hold onto everything when you sit at your desk at the end of the week. That is why I choose Moleskine.

At the moment there are three types of these famed notebooks in my life. The first is just a regular lined notebook – kind of the basic model. I use this one for practically everything. I use it to write notes to myself, to make lists, plans or anything else. This notebook is something that I will flick back through in years to come and remember all the fun I had while I was writing in it.

The second Moleskine I have is the yearly planner. This guy is a softcover which I plan my life in. The left page is always seven slots for each day, and the right is lined to make lists or to dos. This thing keeps me in check. As much as I love iCal, it’s not convenient enough for me, I need something that I can fill in while I’m running through college campus or jumping on a bus or train.

The final one is the London Guidebook. I bought this my first weekend in London, as knew I would be spending the next eight months going back and forth visiting until I move over in the summer. This notebook is basically a guidebook you write for yourself. I fill in every restaurant, bar, movie, show, museum, exhibition and random moments I come across while I’m in London. I have fallen in love with it, and the memories it holds. It’s also good for revisiting great places and avoiding the crap ones. I highly recommend one for the traveller or anyone who just wants to make their own personal directory for wherever they live.

The Awesome Geek loves pen and paper, and should always have some on their person, because you never know where life can take you. Learn even more about Moleskine notebooks here.

The Great Book of Charisma
Fondamentalmente l’idea dietro a questi manuali è semplice.

Handwriting or keyboard?

I prefer writing on keyboard. I prefer the feeling of my fingers flying gracefully ro ont over the keys almost as fast as my conscious mind can muster thoughts. My handwriting is so abominable that if I tried to write that fast I would never be able to read it again. For that matter, even my slow writing borders on the illegible.

The computer’s ability to make quick and neat corrections is convenient and helpful, but doesn’t hold much influence on my preference. I rather enjoy the sloppy crossing out and marginalia and carets that come with handwriting.

That being said, I still write with paper and pen weekly. The feel of a cool, steel pen (zebra pens are best) and the unique curves of my messy handwriting. I have several journals, and sometimes I want the isolation they give me: to be apart from my computer. My computer has distractions built into it. If there is a wifi connection, then those distractions become infinite. (Not least among these is plinky.)

The English version of this Filipino song goes, “Planting rice is never fun…”

It’s a song that tells about the difficulties of the life of a farmer, how one has to bend over the entire day, with no time to sit and no time to stand. And then it goes on to summon the listener to join in, to keep the industrious spirit alive, to continue the hard work in the hopes of securing a brighter future. Wonderful how the song reflects the positive, hopeful mentality of the Filipino.

Somehow, though, the true heart and emotion of the statement, sadly, gets lost in translation (boy, did that movie get the whole concept right in that three-word phrase!)

So. I love taking shots of farmers at work in the fields. Because the Philippines is primarily an agricultural country (“despite plans to turn it into an industrialized economy by 2000″ ), it’s pretty safe to say that farmers constitute a huge part of the images that come into my mind when I think nationalistic thoughts. Plus there is something so humbling about seeing these men and women working hard to give us the most basic of our needs.

I remember in my first year at the state university, I had a teacher named Judy Ick for English 2. I will never forget her, not just because she gave me my very first grade of 1.0 (though yeah, that added to her unforgettable quotient), but mainly because she was totally cool. Back in the early 80s when teachers wore proper 2-inches-below-the-knee skirts and tailored tops, Judy came to our classes in the mini-est of mini skirts and razor-cut hair, shorter on one side than the other, chewing gum, smoking a cigarette, and holding a can of Coke. She was the epitome of cool to the young teenagers that we were. And when the EDSA Revolution broke out, she held our classes underneath the trees in the university’s fields across Palma Hall. And best of all, she was smart.

So how does all that relate to farmers?

See, a group of friends and I–there must have been 6 or 7 of us–heady with the youngsters’ typical bloated sense of freedom that comes from knowing you have certain advantages in college that you didn’t have in high school, decided to make use of that wonderful freedom to absent ourselves from class via the “free cut” route. We stayed in the one sorry cafeteria then, called CASAA (what it stands for, I cannot recall anymore, although I always got a kick out of pronouncing the double-A ending because it sounded so much like the then-famous weatherman’s way of saying PAG-ASA. And this, I do remember, stands for Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, & Astronomical Services Administration. Phew, what a mouthful!).

So there we were, with our arms splayed out on the caf tables, chattering away and playing Pusoy Dos (poker, Philippine-style), when we really should’ve been in our English class. Just our luck… twenty minutes into class time, who came into CASAA looking to buy her regular can of Coke to go with the mint gum in her mouth?

I can still recall with 100% clarity how she looked standing there, staring at us, mouth agape. Wordlessly, she turned around, Coke can in hand, and marched off.

And we? We were as red-faced as overripe tomatoes, guilty beyond doubt. A flurry of debate followed:

- Should we tail her and attend class?

- No, what for? She already caught us cutting her class!

- But it’s worse to continue to sit here and play while we know that she knows we’re throwing her class away for a bunch of cards.

In the end we decided to follow her. In shame. And because we were a bunch of loonies, we bought brown paper bags for each of us, cut holes in them for our eyes, and wore them over our heads as we marched back to our classroom in a line. (And yes, the brown bags were meant to charm Judy Ick with a bit of humor. They worked. )

When we came in, she was giving a firm-sounding lecture to the entire class, and paused just a second before she said, “See? Here they are! These are the guilty ones I was telling you about!”

But because the brown paper bags worked their charm, she softened up and ended her reproach with these words of wisdom that I have carried with me throughout the years (and yes, I’ve told them to my sons over and over again).

She said:

You have to remember: when you study in this state university and you cut classes, you are not just wasting your parents’ money. You are wasting the money of Juan, Pedro, and Tomas, and all the other farmers who work long hours in the fields from morning till night, toiling under the heat of the sun, never stopping even when the rain pours down, just so that they can earn enough to send YOU to school while their own children sit in their homes, unable to attend school themselves.

(At that time, tuition in our university was largely subsidized by the government, and we had to pay a very very very small fee to add to it).

Oh yeah. It was the perfect guilt-trip laid on us. And it worked. I never cut another Judy Ick class again.

And I think I’ve loved farmers ever since.

Ann Arbor, Michigan, does not see a lot of sunshine. Or, at least my 12-year old memories seem plagued by the feeling of cold winter days, gray skies, and a communal hope for those two words: snow day. Neither sunny days nor snow days came often in Ann Arbor. Instead, we saw many slush days. Slush days took the promise of snowfall, raised the temperature ever so slightly, and then transformed fun snow drifts (potential igloos) into sopping, wet mounds. Who wants to play on that? Not me.

On slush days, I didn’t mind playing inside. I found ways to entertain myself after school by creating my own mini “Miles of Smiles” magazine that I distributed to my family and pen pals, calling friends on 3-way, and reading the Chronicles of Narnia. In a time of middle school drama, travel soccer matches, and preteen body issues, my home was my comfort haven.

I found comfort in the living room of our home beneath the large, glass windows. In the afternoon, sunlight warmed the carpet near these windows. Our dog, Duke, curled up in these patches of warmth for his day-long naps. Sometimes, I would join him in this place and turn it into our own tropical island. I’d spread out my pink beach towel in one of the sunny rectangles that stretched across the floor. Then, I’d put on my bikini (which was my first at this time), grab a book, go to the kitchen and get a Capri-Sun, put on my sunglasses, and sprawl out across the towel. Mom would inevitably put on a Jimmy Buffet CD. With the first few notes of “Margaritaville,” my mind would drift far away from a gray place of growing pains to an island of warmth and peace.

I’ve spent most of this morning reading from one of few literature sources that I have availab

I’ve spent most of this morning reading from one of few literature sources that I have available, Game Design Workshop by Tracy Fullerton, Christopher Swain and Steven Hoffman. They have a whole chapter covering prototyping and I tested out some of the exercises contained within it.

Think of it [prototype] as a crude model whose purpose is to allow you to wrap your brain around the game mechanics and see how they function.

The book did a fairly good job of describing what a game prototype is all about. It’s supposed to allow the designer to play around with the different mechanics and decide if it’s fun or intuitive enough for a complete game or game segment. So without hesitation I jumped right into the first exercise.

I was to create a new version of the original Battleship game, containing three changes that brought new aspects to the game. My three changes we’re made with an older audience in mind, therefor I turned it into a drinking game!

For every hit your battleships take you have to drink one gulp of whatever you might have in the glass or bottle at the moment.

When a opposite player sinks one of your ships you have to drink up all of the glass/bottle content.

The one who sinks all of the other player’s ships first earns the title “Captain” for the next round, the captain can mix the game up a bit. He draws a card from a normal deck of cards and can choose to do three different actions accordingly.

If the card has a value between 2 and 9 of any color he can choose to shrink the other player’s grid by one vertical and horizontal column.

When the card is a 10, jack, queen or king of any color the losing player gets all of his ships length increased by 1 grid length.

If the card is an red ace the player have to drink another gulp, if the ace is black he have to drink 11.

I found that just drawing up a grid system helped me imaging what type of different rules I could apply to it. I also used some additional materials to get myself to change the way usual battleships grid looks like. Prototyping is like the ability to sketch something instead of explaining it in words, to help others understands what vision you’re going for.

When prototyping, I think playtesting the prototype is a crucial part of the process, since I didn’t have no one else around I decided to act as both parties in this scenario. The game got a little more interesting with the new ruleset but it could use some balancing, but I could see the “fun” in the mechanic.

The book carries on with some other exercises, like designing a FPS on a paper prototype scale. This fascinated me, that low-fidelity prototyping could be used when building a high-fidelity game in a very hardcore genre.

I will continue to read through the entirety of this chapter and tomorrow I will report back on other discoveries.

Have a good Monday!
