Alex Ovechkin is a name that can be  mentioned with the likes of Mario Lemieux, Wayne Gretzky and even Bobby Orr. However, he can also be put in a category with the likes of Steve Downie, Steve Ott and Sean Avery.  As you rack your brain trying to connect the dots, think back to Wednesday night’s game against the Buffalo Sabres and recall that Ovechkin was ejected for boarding. And there you have it; the three players mentioned above are among the dirtiest in the league.  Now many of you may disagree with that statement, but before you protest, let me present the following evidence:

1. Ovechkin Ejection #1, December 2, 2006 – Ovechkin is ejected after hitting Daniel Briere from behind. Briere hits his head after being a foot or so away from the boards. Ovechkin is challenged for his reckless hit but has others stand up for him.

2. Ovechkin Knee on Knee, May 8, 2009 – Ovechkin takes Sergei Gonchar out of the game and the series with a direct knee on knee hit. He left his feet to make contact with Gonchar. Was it intentional? Only Ovie knows.

3. Ovechkin Ejection #2, November 25, 2009 - Ovechkin hits Patrick Kaleta from behind into the boards, drawing a 5-minute boarding penalty and a game misconduct.

These three incidents highlight just the type of player Ovechkin has become known as across the NHL.  The truth of it is that Ovechkin plays with a recklessness that has resulted in injury on more than one occasion. Does everyone remember this past year’s playoffs when the Pittsburgh Penguins complained about Ovechkin leaving his feet to make hits, even before he had taken out Gonchar?

Yes he can score. Yes he is exciting.  However, Ovechkin plays with both a lack of respect for his opponents and the game of hockey.  The sad truth is that he is going to seriously hurt someone if he continues playing this way, yet the league refuses to discipline him.  They wouldn’t dare suspend Ovechkin because he is too significant an attraction to the game and league officials are clearly focused primarily on attendance figures.  I caution Mr. Colin Campbell: If you don’t discipline Ovechkin soon, somebody will take the matters into their own hands, and to tell you the truth, I welcome it.

The bank that coined the phrase, “we listen, we understand, we make it work” seemed to forget that public relations slogan during the large CAW labor protest at 500 Woodward Avenue, in Detroit, MI.  As you recall, Canadian workers of Adraco and Aramco a division of Catalina Precision, have been denied their severance, termination, and vacation pay by the Catalina’s creditors Comerica Bank.  Numerous coalitions were there to demand justice for workers who just want to be paid what they are owed and Comerica controls the purse strings.  They feel that workers being paid is more important that Comerica executive bonuses.  Participants signed a letter to the company’s executives asking Comerica to live up to the so called “code of ethics” that is posted on Comerica’s website.  The code of ethics seems like a great public relations spin tool but the workers with children to feed were more interested in Comerica showing action; not just empty public relations gimmicks.  As one of the participants read from Comerica’s code of ethics, looks of disgust and frustration fell over participants faces.  There appeared to be a huge disconnect between corporate marketing propaganda and the daily reality that the workers were facing.
At one point a protester challenged the CEO, Ralph Babb and the Michigan President Tom Ogden to respond to the workers concerns.   Comerica executives were challenged to answer the following questions:

• Do they think it was fair that Comerica was rewarded $2.25 billion in TARP money approximately 30 days after the Michigan attorney general Mike Cox forced Comerica Securities to pay fines and restitution of over $1.5 billion to shareholders?
• Is it fair that the banking industry has received $23.7 million in subsidies, bailouts and backdoor corporate welfare while homeowner forclosure rates are at 15% and property values have collapsed?
• Is it fair that the citizens labor under disasterous debt burdens while the banking industry has been given subsidies that could have paid off personal mortgage debt three times over?
• Workers have alleged fraud by the company owners.  Should law enforcement launch an investigation into what Comerica knew and when they knew it?  Are there possible fraudulent conveyance issues regarding the collateral?
• Is if fair that US banks are speculating with the TARP money, including foreign exchange trading that is driving the US dollar lower?
• Is if fair that Comerica CEO Ralph Babb got a raise in 2008?
• Is it fair that Comerica stock holders have lost money over the past 5 years while Comerica executives have gotten extremely wealthy?
• Is it fair that Comerica Bank has so much taxpayer TARP money and at the same time ranks in the top ten banks for loans to company insiders?
• Is it fair that these loans to corporate insiders are not fully transparent?
• Is it fair that Comerica has refused to give an account of exactly where the $2.25 billiion in TARP money went and why?
• Is if fair that Comerica executives seem to hide in their plush offices and refuse to answer the public’s questions?  Perhaps the next protest should be at the home of a Comerica executive like Michigan President, Tom Ogden in Grosse Pointe?   Perhaps neighbors should have a chance to see exactly what serous issues Comerica executives are dodging?

No Comerica executives were willing to address these questions.  To the contrary, a goon from Comerica’s security staff came outside to harrass the protesters and interfere with the protest.  A Comerica security goon constantly interfered with the groups right to free speech and free assembly.  At the same time various Comerica employees watched the protesters from the lobby of the building.  Many protesters commented on the arrogant smirks from the “Comericasuits” that watched the workers appeal for fairness.  After letter to Comerica management had been signed by all the attendees the CAW made an attempt to deliver it to someone in the lobby.  To our surprise, Comerica had locked the doors and therefore could not receive the signed letter.  Even Comerica customers and employees were unable to get into the front door after Comerica locked them out at approximately 12:45 pm.  Participants thought this as an act of wholesale cowardice and arrogance.   The signed letter had to be left at Comerica’s front door while the various journalists continued to take notes.  This is what $2.25 billion of your tax dollars now sit.  What will Comerica plan as an encore at future protests?

Een goede penalty is een kwestie van routine. Oefenen, oefenen en nog eens oefenen dus. Sommige trainers beweren dat je penaltys alleen maar kunt leren in een afgeladen stadion en niet op een rustig oefenveld. Maar als je het nemen van een penalty onder de knie hebt, heb je ook minder last van de spanning in een vol stadion.

E plictisitor, plictisitor de moarte, fiind deci cazul s-o luam din loc. A fost concluzia lui Roy Keane despre reactia unei intregi Irlande, mai putin a sa, of course, la hentul lui Henry, parere exprimata la nici doua zile dupa jocul de la Paris.

Sunt perfect de-acord cu Keane c-ar fi timpul sa scriem si de-altceva. Dar, intr-o ultima radiografiere a tonelor de hartie consumate in Albion pe marginea meciului intre vecinii de peste Canalul Manecii si Marea Irlandei, m-am izbit de editorialul unuia dintre cele mai reputate peneluri din Regatul Unit, al carui comentariu m-a facut sa pricem ca, in ciuda deceniilor petrecute de la distanta ori de la fata locului cu ochii pe fotbalul insular, nu deprinsesem o piatra de temelie a etosului jocului inventatorilor sai.

Intr-o stranie coincidenta in privinta nationalitatii eroilor fazei aduse in discutie de jurnalist, se intampla cu doar 9 zile inaintea henturilor de pe Stade de France ca un mulatru atacant francez sa obtina un penalty nemeritat, plonjand in careu ca in bazin, in preajma unui mijlocas irlandez ce se lansase intr-o deposedare prin alunecare, fara insa a-l fi atins. Faza s-a derulat in ultimul joc al etapei dinaintea meciurilor intertari, mai exact Liverpool – Birmingham City, intr-o luni seara.

David Ngog a patruns pe flancul stang, a cazut neobstructionat in careu, arbitrul a acordat penalty iar irlandezul Lee Carsley s-a facut foc si para pe francez si oficial. Acest incident, si nu mult discutatul dublu hent de la Paris, a fost subiectul randurilor ce mi-au dezvaluit un fapt esential despre crezul iubitorilor de fotbal din Regat.

Am aflat astfel ca, la conferinta de presa dinaintea recentei partide Liverpool – Manchester City, un alt 2-2, ca si cu City din Birmingham, Rafael Benitez s-ar fi exprimat ca plonjonul lui Ngog s-a constituit intr-o mai mica ofensa la adresa fotbalului decat un tackling periculos. La care, atragandu-i-se atentia ca auditoriul englez are o perceptie inversata in aceasta privinta, spanionul a solicitat presarilor sa incerce furnizarea unei ordini mai umane a prioritatilor.

E posibil ca, influentat de numarul accidentatilor din lot in cursul acestei toamne, incluzand piese cheie ca Gerrard si Torres, antrenorul Benitez sa fi incercat diminuarea oprobiului iscat la adresa oportunismului tanarului sau atacant prin a-i aseza plonjonul in lumina unor “rele” pe care le considera mai mari, exemplificand tacklingurile ce pun in pericol ori chiar accidenteaza adversari.

Benitez nu si-a gasit insa cu acest punct de vedere aliati intre ziaristi. Dintre care, editorialistul a dezvaluit consensul sincer al breslei ca, amintind de-un plonjon similar din vara al lui Eduardo, in jocul Arsenal – Celtic, gestul brazilianului-croat a fost mai grav decat incidentul in care ii era rupt piciorul, intr-un tackling considerat accidental, comis acum 20 de luni, coincidenta, de un fundas de la… Birmingham City, Martin Taylor. Faultul de maidan din preajma centrului terenului, in primele minute ale acelei partide, e probabil inca intiparit pe retina multor telespectatori, cu tibia lui Eduardo franta ca o grisina si cu Wenger explodand imediat dupa fluierul final, cum ca Taylor ar trebui suspendat pe viata din fotbal. Sentinta pe care si-a renegat-o in aceeasi seara.

Ei bine, dintotdeauna am admirat fair-playul britanic si, mai mult, am detestat copios trucurile de tot felul ale fotbalului in general de sorginte latina, contrast care m-a determinat cu si mai mare usurinta sa simpatizez abordarea insularilor. Dar n-am intuit ca britanicilor le repugna intr-asemenea masura teatralitatea ori micile farse ale jocului latin incat sa imbratiseze ca pe un mai mic rau o incercare de deposedare generand oase rupte. In fiecare zi invatam cate ceva si abia acum am priceput ordinea lucrurilor, pe un subiect de principiu mai mult decat important in privinta fotbalului insular.

Benitez, dupa 6 ani in Albion, de o parte a faliei, iar presarii de cealalta, cand vine vorba de merele stricate ale fotbalului. Plonjonul in speranta unui penalty ori tacklingul primejdios. Falia e probabil extinsa in aceasta privinta, existand in general intre jocul din Marea Britanie si cel continental ori macar latin.

Iar pentru a-si fortifica argumentul, comentatorul a exemplificat atacul lui Guthrie, in primavara inca in elita cu Newcastle, care a sprintat la tinta, scotandu-l din joc pe Fagan, de la Hull City, dar nu pentru restul partidei, ci pe cateva luni de zile, considerand ca faultul sau, desi in mod evident premeditat, ar atrage mai putine critici decat plonjonul teatral al lui Ngog.

Aici consider ca este o fortare a notei, o exagerare, ori  – din contra – tocmai dovada absoluta a spiritului de lupta al bulldogului britanic, “fibra” esentiala a jocului in insula. Jos palaria daca determinarea respectivilor jucatori, oricat de amenintator ar parea tacklingul, ar rezulta intr-o deposedare curata prin alunecare, mingea si nu adversarul. Insa in cazul in care atacurile s-au lasat, in cazurile amintite, cu fracturi si multe luni prin sali de recuperare si pe tusa, imi cer iertare, dar n-ar putea avea mai multa trecere in fata incercarii unui Ngog de a obtine pe nedrept penalty.

In motricitatea lui Ngog nu s-a deslusit ca ar cauta penaltyul cu lumanarea, doar “saniuta” lui Carsley determinandu-l sa incerce in ultima clipa marea cu sarea, pe cand acel hei-rup al lui Guthrie, lansat la rupere, a fost cu premeditare. Acestea au fost exemplele alese de ziarist pentru a-si reliefa punctul de vedere, creand implicit o falie intre perceptia sa si probabil nu doar a lui Benitez, ci a destulor exponenti ai fotbalului non-insular.

Articolul mi-a pus in alta lumina marja acceptabilitatii deposedarii in fotbalul insular, placandu-mi mult tacklingurile desavarsite dar gasindu-le uneori mai mult decat la limita chiar si pe cele ale lui Paul Scholes, altfel deloc un jucator “murdar”.  

Mai jos, faultul asupra lui Eduardo si plonjonul sau contra lui Celtic, unii presari considerand a doua infractiune ca fiind mai grava. Va las pe Dumneavoastra sa decideti. Gusturile nu se discuta.

There are certain things that I can remember seeing  on television that blew my tiny mind. These include the return of The Ultimate Warrior at Wrestlemania VIII, seeing Michael Knight fly over a lorry in K.I.T.T., The Demon Headmaster. And in more recent years, Tony Soprano being shot and left for dead by his own uncle, Family Guy, the what if it actually happened scenario of nuclear explosions in Threads. Each of these moments made me realise that television can alter your outlook on things, and make you feel something powerful inside. Feelings of wonderement, joy, sadness, confusion, anger, hate and more.

The Execution Of Gary Glitter (Channel 4) made me feel a lot of those same emotions. I am aware that it was shown last monday, but I was gigging and forgot to Sky Plus. Silly boy. However, in a glorious decision by Channel 4 and YouTube, they have agreed to show full episodes and series of their most poplular output. You can watch the documentary here.

Seeing as the show is not recent, and most of you have probably seen it, I won’t do an indepth review. All you need to know is it is set in an alternative Britain where the death penalty has been reintroduced. And the first victim of the Capital Crimes Against Children legislation is one Paul Francis Gadd. Writer, director and producer, Rob Coldstream has crafted a nice documentary. It deals with both the public’s and Glitter’s reaction to the reintroduction of the law.

Glitter is played very convincingly by Hilton McRae. Almost eerily so. And he plays him as a creepy, self-deluded, unaware of able to see any wrong in what he has done character. A paedophile. The last ten minutes is possibly the best, dealing with Glitter pacing up and down the cell awaiting that long final walk.

I won’t say I enjoyed it. It’s hard to enjoy a show that deals with the mock execution of a man. However, it did, like those memories mentioned above, cunjure up strong feelings. Feelings of anger and hate. And for that, this television show did well.

“Voi trebuie sa-i convingeti, nimeni altcineva“, a conchis Sir Alex Ferguson, referindu-se doar la necesitatea introducerii tehnologiei video de catre FIFA pentru solutionarea fazelor litigioase, intrebat fiind in privinta hentului lui Thierry Henry. De fapt, managerul lui Manchester United nici n-a pomenit numele francezului, ca de altfel si Carlo Ancelotti, antrenorul celeilalte fruntase, lidera Chelsea, ce a atins exact acelasi subiect, evidenta video. 

Roger Federer, prezent in Londra la Barclays ATP World Tour Finals, a adus lumina din lumea Circului Alb, spunand sec ca “nu poti sa-l acuzi ca ar fi continuat faza. Daca arbitrul nu vede, cred ca de vina sunt sistemele si centralul. S-a intamplat deja de-atatea ori. S-au acordat atatea goluri ce n-au fost. Acesta a fost unul in plus.”  Roger, colegul lui Thierry, alaturi de golferul Tiger Woods, cei trei din reclama la Gillette…

Spre limpezirea apelor, odata furia oarba domolita si timpul sfetnic bun scurs intru judecarea la rece a valvataii pariziene, destui editorialisti ai ziarelor de weekend britanice si-au venit in fire iar intervievati din lumea sportului profesionist nu doar ca s-au abtinut in a-l cataloga in vreun fel pe asa etichetatul “trisor” Thierry Henry, ci s-au referit in general la erorile inerente de arbitraj, amintind de necesitatea evidentei video.

Henturile lui Henry le-au dat asadar ocazia antrenorilor sa aduca in discutie introducerea tehnologiei video in arbitraj, care bineinteles ideal ar fi sa nu permeeze lumea fotbalului. Naturaletea si imperfectiunea profund umana a jocului, ce dau har si atractivitate disputei, ar fi inlaturate in favoarea altei metode ducandu-ne incet si sigur spre robotizarea absoluta. Si-n plus, ce ne vom face cu un joc disputat la Lincoln, intr-o liga inferioara!? Toate bune pe stadioanele marilor cluburi, angrenate in marile competitii, insa apelarea la evidenta video doar in anumite partide ar fi in mod normal ilogica. Totul sau nimic… 

Mai mult, Patrick Barclay, comentatorul sef de fotbal pentru The Times, in articolul “Reactii imploratoare improasca si mai multa rusine pe o afacere trista“, pune lupa inclusiv pe incriminatorul Robbie Keane, capitan al Irlandei acuzand de la UEFA la FIFA si de la Platini la Blatter la finalul jocului de la Paris, si care jucator de la Spurs era sanctionat pentru… hent in atac, in careul lui Lloris, in prima repriza a returului din Franta.

Cu alte cuvinte, mai toti “sunt pe felie”, doar gandindu-ne la ingenuncherile teatrale, plonjoanele si tavalelile multor jucatori incercand sa smulga penaltyuri, dar unii striga mai tare decat altii “Prindeti hotul!” Am avut nefericita ocazie, intr-o buna zi, sa mi se destainuie ca irlandezii ar fi cei mai ipocriti oameni din lume. E imposibil de cuantificat o asemenea afirmatie si m-am aratat rezervat, daca nu foarte mirat, venind tocmai din partea unui… irlandez.

In februarie 2009, la Dublin, Irlanda cersea si obtinea penalty la 1-0 pentru georgieni, in urma unui hent inexistent. Roata morii se-nvarteste…

Insa reactia utilizatorului mainilor, Robbie Keane, si nu doar intr-o unica ocazie, dar mai ales inregistrarea video a incidentului din minutul 71 al jocului din februarie, Irlanda – Georgia, de pe Croke Park din Dublin, la scorul de 1-0 pentru ex-sovietici, cand centralul a acordat “verzilor” un penalty “din burta”, absolut imaginar, pentru, culmea ironiei, un presupus… hent, in ciuda semnalizarii unui… ofsaid de catre asistent, au pus deja in alta lumina scrancetele lipsite de demnitate ale insularilor in Orasul Luminii.

Vizionand faza penaltyului acordat, publicata pe YouTube, se observa ca Robbie Keane a ridicat mana intr-o tentativa de a-l influenta pe central, ceea ce de fapt a reusit, cersind practic un cadou nemeritat. Keane a egalat la unu iar cinci minute mai tarziu, dovada ca se poate ajunge la un 2-1 cu care Irlanda s-ar fi calificat la Paris, acelasi Keane a adus victoria impotriva Georgiei. Avea sa fie de fapt a doua cu 2-1 impotriva celor din Tbilisi, dupa cea din tur, la debutul lui Trapattoni, reusita insa in… Germania, pe teren neutru, datorita conflictului din spatiul ex-sovietic. De unde ca, adunand si notand ca insularii au strans doar 4 victorii din 10 meciuri intr-o grupa si cu Cipru si Muntenegru, e limpede ca Irlanda a avut sansele si avantajele sale evidente in campania de calificare, nefructificate insa, un motiv in plus pentru cresterea putin cate putin pana la temperatura de fierbere a frustrarii celor din Dublin.

O mare frustrare, sa fii egalat acasa in minutul 90, de campioana mondiala, Italia. “Daca am fi mentinut rezultatul, i-am fi <intins> pana la final in lupta pentru locul unu“, spunea apoi Given. Daca… Culmea e ca vorbele sale luau in calcul o victorie ca si acontata, in ultimul joc, cu Muntenegru. Succes ce insa n-a venit: 0-0. O si mai mare frustrare. Asta in vreme ce Italia invingea, cucerind logic si meritat grupa.

Si mai multa mizerie, in prima mansa cu Franta. 0-1. Pusi pe harta, la final, irlandezii cereau socoteala lui Diarra. Nu puteau recunoaste cu barbatie infrangerea, cineva avand insa sa se ia patru zile mai apoi de adversarii lor, la Paris, cum ca ar avea “inimi cat bobul de mazare“.

Frustrarea colosala a fost generata de ineficacitatea de pe Stade de France, de ratarile uriase ce ar fi desprins-o in invingatoare in fieful vicecampioanei mondiale, ratari care, convertite in macar un al doilea gol, i-ar fi adus calificarea. De aici probabil si reactia incredibila de dupa meci, cu declaratii, reactii si “iesiri” care mai de care mai belicoase, dezonorante, si care au inflamat oprobiul partinitor al maselor, incluzand destui microbisti de ocazie cu o precara sau inexistenta cultura fotbalistica si a sportului in general.

Spiritul revendicativ al vehementelor atacuri verbale, multe lasandu-te “masca”, fara replica, a stirbit implicit din simpatia ce Irlanda si-o atrasese cu jocul combativ impotriva Frantei, furia oarba dejucand indirect propria cauza de a arata lumii intregi nedreptatea ce li se servise si demascand un serios complex de inferioritate. Mai mult, a aratat un public telespectator “de fotoliu” nu doar patimas, ci alunecand pe neasteptate pante ale insultelor si xenofobiei. Cum a putut de fapt suporta hartia destuparea atator prejudecati latente!?

Dregand busuiocul, una din evantaiul publicatiilor dand initial in primire patimilor si etichetarilor gen “trisor”, The Independent din Londra a contrabalansat intr-o adnotare un prim editorial inflamator la adresa calificatei si a tintei oprobiului general, recunoscand in titlu “Ultima vorba: <dreptatea> noastra moralizatoare e la fel de patetica trisului” si subliniind ca “a fost tot ceea ce ne-am asteptat si ne-am dorit si – ca de obicei – ne-a facut ca si colectiv sa ne simtim mai bine“.

Omenirea a imbatranit mii de ani dar de fapt a ramas tot in jurul stalpului infamiei, cu piatra pregatita impotriva acuzatului. Henry a trecut zilele trecute prin purgatoriu…

Iar referindu-se la adidas si interesele cu conotatii economice ce ar fi influentat calificarea, dupa cum se exprimau Robbie Keane ori Duff, ar mai fi un aspect ce ridica semne de intrebare in privinta vehementei Irlandei. Tara de Smarald trece printr-o criza fara precedent in istoria sa ca natiune din Uniunea Europeana, cu cele mai mari datorii pe cap de locuitor din lume, 425% din PIB, iar o victorie in arena sportiva ar fi fost nu doar una de moral, dar si o recunoastere in proprii ochi si ai comunitatii internationale. O reconfirmare.

The bureaucratic systems set up by local government and some of the huge charities have no ability to build genuine relationships with the people they are supposed to serve. Although usually well intentioned to begin with, they become self serving empires for their managers and the staff get reduced to box ticking target hunters rather than genuine carers.

The problem with the Tories is that they have not put forward any concrete proposals to show how they would cut the interfering state and we know that in government they will be hard to distinguish from the appalling Labour government they hope to replace.

The welfare dependency that has been built up over decades, including such deceptions as the incapacity system introduced by Thatcher to try to hide unemployment, cannot be wiped out overnight, but real progress must be made immediately.

Cameron says that people should not be worse off when they go off benefit into work. Of course not. He will not achieve that by fiddling with tax credits. The tax credit system is a costly, over complex, bureaucratic monster that needs to be scrapped. Incapacity benefit must be ended and the benefits for all people without work frozen at their current level.

As wages increase and benefits stay fixed the incentive to find work and not be penalised for taking it increases.

John Allen Muhammad, the mastermind of the sniper attacks that terrorized the nation’s capital region for three weeks in October 2002, was executed Tuesday. Muhammad died by injection at 9:11 p.m. at Greensville Correctional Center in Jarratt, prison spokesman Larry Traylor said.

He said Muhammad had no final statement and that Traylor didn’t hear him utter any words during the execution.

Muhammad was executed for killing Dean Harold Meyers, who was shot in the head at a Manassas gas station during a spree that left 10 dead across Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C..  

“We extend our condolences not only to the families and loved ones of the victims, but also to the family and loved ones of John Allen Muhammad,” said J. Wyndal Gordon, one of Muhammad’s attorneys. “It’s just a tragic situation all around.”

Earlier, Gordon had described Muhammad as fearless and insisted he was innocent.

“He is absolutely unafraid and he will die with dignity – dignity to the point of defiance,” Gordon said.

The shootings terrorized the region, as victim after victim was shot down while doing everyday chores: going shopping, pumping gas, mowing the lawn. One child was shot while walking into his middle school.

People stayed indoors. Those who did go outside weaved as they walked or bobbed their heads to make themselves a less easy target.

The reign of terror ended on Oct. 24, 2002, when police captured Muhammad and his teenage accomplice, Lee Boyd Malvo, as they slept at a Maryland rest stop in a car they had outfitted for a shooter to perch in its trunk without being detected.

Muhammad and Malvo also were suspected of fatal shootings in other states, including Louisiana, Alabama and Arizona. Malvo was sentenced to life in prison.

The U.S. Supreme Court turned down Muhammad’s final appeal Monday and Gov. Timothy M. Kaine denied clemency Tuesday.

Cheryll Witz was one of several victims’ family members who traveled to Virginia to watch the execution. Malvo confessed that he shot her father, Jerry Taylor, on a Tucson, Ariz., golf course in March 2002 at Muhammad’s direction.

“He basically watched my dad breathe his last breath,” she said. “Why shouldn’t I watch his last breath?”

Muhammad met with family members in the hours before his execution but did not have a spiritual adviser, Traylor said
