Forget about doing drawings in Pen/Paint, it’s stupid and people who are into detail/perfection go for pencil (because obviously it looks better). You must be very delicate when you are drawing with pencil, think, smudging. All you need is pencils, a decent sharpener, rubber, and a ruler, and other things, like a coin for example to draw a wheel. Most of my pencil drawings have taken about 3 to 4 hours to produce, but high-quality pencil drawings will take a few days, the key is obviously not to rush. It may be boring doing all the little detail in a pencil drawing, ie, like the bolts on an aeroplane, but the boredom of doing a pencil drawing to perfection is well worth it. If you have done your best getting the right shape, detail in it, and done the drawing to perfection, it will look tremendous when it’s done.

You look back on your old drawings and you say ‘a kid could draw that, they are nothing compared to my new ones’, that definitely shows you have improved.

The drawing below took about 3 hours, I took it with a mobile camera, hence the picture quality is poor. This is the best one I’ve done up to now, but I need to start doing ones that will take days not hours to complete (note: writing on the drawing has been blocked out.)

Day 25 – Incorporating words into a zentangle, done in the car (thus the wiggly lines)

Day 27 – I didn’t do anything that I want to share on Thanksgiving Day, but I did do artwork, and I did a lot of work on the following day. Here’s my attempt at a free-drawn girl. I need a lot of work in the area of drawing people without having anything to look at!

Day 28 – My daughter is a fan of Michael Jackson, so she wanted me to try to draw a picture of him (also drawn in the car, and leaving a lot to be desired, but at least it looks like him).

I decided to draw one of my cats sleeping. After all, good illustrations are often based good life drawings of similar subjects.

Some things in drawing are just hard, like going from a basic setup to a full-featured sketch. I guess that requires years of good training and not a few days of trampling around with his pencil by some person who thinks he can draw.

Well, at least the drawings are getting better. They are still replicas of the originals, though, and not originals themselves. The problem still is that I can’t imagine a 2D shape as a 3D form. Getting some kind of “wire frame” in my head seems impossible.

Who knows, maybe it is indeed impossible for me. That is worrisome, because I’m already having problems telling stories. What is there left to do for someone who wants to draw comics if he can’t tell original stories and can’t draw original art?

This is T-bag from the television show Prison Break. He’s got to be one of my favorite character – Though at times his action are shocking I find him rather humorous. Actor is Robert Knepper.

Bug stuff

this is one i did for  friend of his daughter, ava. i’m really impressed with the quality of it, and was so eager to give it to him. apparently he loves it, and so does everyone else.

the thing about portraits – be it painting, sketch or photo – i’m not a fan of posed. i’m not a fan of posed anything really (except for all my posed facebook pics where we’re all acting the fool, but that’s totally different).

what i asked my friends to do was give me pics of their kids that i could sketch, but nothing posed. everything candid. you get more personality that way, and the image turns out a lot more fun. wouldn’t you rather see a picture of someone being themself, than pretending to be some statue image of who they’re supposed to be?

it’s like when homer goes hang gliding with sideshow mel, so mel can get an idea of what homer’s everyday life is like to see who’s trying to kill him (big simpsons fan). mel says, “you always go hang gliding?” and homer says, “i just wanted to impress you.” (maybe not in those exact words but the sentiment is there.)

a posed portrait is just that – you get on your fanciest clothes, do your make up and try to put on your most striking face. that’s not who you are. who you are is when people catch you when you least expect it. that has more meaning than anything else. to me, anyway.

i had to give up on the master cleanse. i woke up this morning super nauseous and with the shakes. that’s never happened to me before, i was actually pretty scared. but i’m eating solids now, and i guess i’ll just try something a little less drastic. or eating better. or something like that.

An untitiled sketch on paper in charcoal and pencil, from 1930, done by Arthur Lismer, was donated to Museum London by a couple in Utterson, Ontario.

Museum personnel have dubbed it Lismer and Friends Seated Around The Table as it shows the artist and other members of Canada’s most celebrated group of painters, such as J.E.H. MacDonald, A.Y. Jackson, Franz Johnston and Lawren Harris and their contemporaries, Bertram Brooker and Merrill Denison, gathered round a table at the Arts & Letters Club in Toronto.The museum is building an exhibition on it’s new work titled Around the Table.

The exhibition opens on Dec. 19 and runs until Apr. 4.

I am in a sketching phase. And especially scenes, not things or objects. Scenes like buildings and architecture, streets, les places, small shops. I don’t think I’m particularly good at these type of “scenes”, but I’m having fun!   I sometimes feel I will never be a proper artist. I  feel too much  like a changeling for I have too many phases. Maybe it is the winter.  Or the atmosphere in the streets, the lights coming from buildings, the reflection of streetlamps…how can I work alone in my atelier when there is the smell of coffee and hot chocolate in the bars, the intimate talks around candles, the festivity of people with shopping bags in the streets, the  creeping deeper into your woolen hat and coat…
