FinalRune’s third installment of the Troll of Stony Brook introduces us to the troll – a fearless, man-eating creature for sure, but, um, not without a soft stop. Sadly, humans just won’t leave him alone and the rough exterior shows up again.

After this next dose of audio delight we move on to Fallen Angels that Bounce, a serialized audio noir tale by ZBS featuring lush soundscapes of Rio de Janeiro and New York City. Flo has a recurring dream of Rio that never goes anywhere – so Joe and Moe take it upon themselves to cook up a tale of a devilish twin sister, crooked gangsters, and dreams of Rio.

Meet a crazy kooky cast in a program which is unabashedly aware of its art form, showing off the wondrously imaginative and dreamlike possibilities of audio!

The focus of the Listening Post has always been modern audio drama podcasts. However, podcasts are far from the only delivery method for audio drama. On the internet there are hundreds of streaming radio stations, some of which carry audio drama all the time, (such as Sound Stages Radio) and sometimes streaming stations only feature certain shows or certain time slots for audio drama. For example Living Dead Media Radio, plays the newest episode of “You’ve Dead On You” one day before its made available for podcast. In another example, Voices In The Wind Audio Theater was able to get their production, “Running To Detroit” aired on both broadcast and streaming radio from Country 92.9 just this past Saturday. Even with all these great listening options, finding the time to listen to a show during a particular time slot can make audio drama a challenge in our increasingly “on the go” world. While you can find audio drama in the United States on satellite radio or even on NPR from time to time, exposing the general public to audio drama, just isn’t as easy as it used to be.

The BBC and Broadcast Radio Drama

While broadcast radio drama may be rare as hens teeth in the United States, in other countries it can be quite common and popular. In the UK for example, you can still find actual honest-to-goodness radio drama; often in prime time and sometimes with A-List talent such as Sir Ian McKellen, (of X-Men and Lord of the Rings fame) who starred in an audio adaptation of Ian Fleming’s Goldfinger which BBC 4 aired earlier this year. One would think in an environment with big name talent and the financial backing of the BBC, it would be easy to to keep radio drama on the air. But sadly, the BBC recently announced plans to drop its Friday Play time slot. The company has stated that radio drama will remain a part of the BBC for some time to come, though one does have to wonder how long it will be before  further cuts are made. In addition to the cut backs it was also announced that the Drama department was being merged with the Documentary department, a move that some feel could potentially destroy radio drama at the BBC, in the long term. On June 20th The Guardian published an article which offered a glimpse into the contributions the BBC has made to radio drama:

“Yes, the BBC is still by far the most prolific drama broadcaster in the world, airing 649 hours this year (including readings), with a total of 200 single plays. And yes, the Friday Play represents just 3% of this and was the least popular slot (although many would argue that the quality was more consistent than that of the Afternoon Plays). Nevertheless, it remains a loss for radio drama, not a gain.“

While it would be easy to think “This is great, here’s an opportunity for independent podcasters to fill the void and continue to grow“! As long time followers of audio drama can attest, and the Guardian article  goes on to point out, “survival is not the same as growth”. In my opinion, whatever growth podcasters of the medium experienced, it would probably not last long without the type of exposure and growth mainstream radio (broadcast in any country) can give to audio drama.

“So is radio drama dying, as Equity warned us? Not yet, not while the BBC still exists. But survival is not the same as growth, and the medium needs to make better use of digital technology. Videos, DVDs and hard-disc recording have fundamentally altered the way people consume television, especially drama. Radio plays remain very difficult to enjoy in the same way. The iPlayer helps a little, but for a limited period“.

The Spotlight on Podcasting

One of the big strengths of the podcasting format is being able to download podcasts to an ultra-portable mp3 player, and listen to shows anytime, just about anywhere. As I understand it, the BBC has begun to podcast “The Archers” a popular audio soap opera, so why not podcast other productions once they’ve aired, as well? The same article went on to point out some new sources of listening material that do use podcasting as their delivery method. Regular readers of The Listening Post will find some very familiar names here:

“By far the busiest group of original audio dramatists, however, are the small-scale podcasters. For the most part, this means science fiction, fantasy and mystery stories – try the Pendant Productions website (pendantaudio.com). For a polished zombie drama podcast go to zombiepodcast.com. Mystery stories can be heard at olinemysteries.com and wormwoodshow.com. One well-regarded (and British) ghost story series from 2006 is still available at paranormalists.co.uk. You can find well-packaged guides to what else is out there at audiodramareview.blogspot.com and radiodramarevival.com. And it’s all free.“

The Possible Effects

Its great to see so many audio drama groups and people mentioned all at once, the extra publicity should help boost download numbers if nothing else. Reaction to the closure of the Friday Play was so strong that journalists, writers and fans alike began a huge outcry against the move. One such fan is R Frank Wilson who started a Facebook group called “Speak Up For Radio Drama Now!” which is well over one thousand members strong. R Frank Wilson’s group has begun recommending alternatives to the BBC’s well known works. In an encouraging move filled with potential for podcasters, many of Speak Up For Radio Drama Now’s recommendations come from  independent podcasts such as the award winning Icebox Radio Theater and 19 Nocturne Boulevard, among others.

What the ultimate effect of all this will be (assuming the BBC actually goes through with its plans to  merge departments and cut the Friday Play) is difficult for a humble blogger like me to say. After all, I have little knowledge of the BBC or its inner workings. But I think  this is a story that anyone with an interest in audio drama should at least take note of, and not just for the recognition to independent podcasters that has come from from the mainstream press, either.

“3 Skeleton Key” In “Compare-O-Rama”!

In 2007, the Icebox Radio Theater presented an old time radio recreation at it’s Halloween show of ’3 Skeleton Key’, a classic episode of ‘Escape’ that originally aired in 1948 starring Vincent Price.  In the story, three lighthouse keepers in tropical Guinea find their lighthouse besieged by millions of starving rats that have washed up on their tiny key (or quay) from an abandoned ship.

In Compare-O-Rama, the original radio play is spliced together with the IBRT recreation, telling the whole story by switching back and forth between versions, giving listeners a chance to hear differences in performances, sound effects, and music. Summer kicks off at the Icebox Radio Podcast!

Fans are a huge part of audio drama podcasting. Frequently the main reason for doing what the many writers, editors and voice actors do, becomes simple recognition of their hard work. Knowing that someone out there is listening to their work, can be a great motivator to the cast and crew of a show. Recently Darker Projects and Pendant Productions “paid it forward” to some of their biggest fans in a very cool way. How you ask? Read on and find out…

Pendant Productions fan fiction serial, Batman: The Ace of Detectives is currently in its  fourth season and has many followers of all ages, including one very special youngster named Draven, age 9. She was so taken by Batman’s monthly adventures that she had to write and let Batman know just how much of a fan she was. Well even the Batman was touched to read such a letter, so the cowled one did what any self-respecting superhero would do… He gave his biggest fan a personal shout out in Issue 53 of Batman Ace of Detectives! By now your asking yourself, who is this mysterious Draven? Why she’s the granddaughter of Bill Hollweg at BrokenSea Audio Productions of course!

The Byron Chronicles from Darker Projects has been running for three seasons now, and the self-proclaimed “#1 Byron Fan Girl” Samantha, has been following every episode of Byron for at least that long. Sam first discovered audio drama in her Junior year of High School and has become an avid follower of many shows ever since. She liked the Byron Chronicles so much she started a blog about a year ago, and quickly discovered many other shows along the way. For about the past year she has been avidly blogging about her favorite shows as Sam “The Blog Lady” on her website Leviathan Dances. All this blogging didn’t go unnoticed by Eric Busby and the cast of Byron. In fact by the second episode of season  three, a whole new character was created for the show. That character’s name?… Sam. The title of that Episode was also Sam. Apparently, some days it pays to be a superfan!

DRT Invades PRX

Decoder Ring Theatre is ramping up to take over the airwaves, and they need you the fans, to do it!…

On August 28, 2009 Decoder Ring Theater began broadcasting on Toronto’s own CIUT FM 89.5 with a complete season of Decoder Ring’s serial “Black Jack Justice” in a major market. Now Decoder Ring Theatre is looking to expand their reach and they hope to use Public Radio Exchange or PRX as its called, to do it.

So what is PRX? Well their own website explains it like this…

“Public Radio Exchange is an online marketplace for distribution, review, and licensing of public radio programming. PRX is also a growing social network and community of listeners, producers, and stations collaborating to reshape public radio. The mission of PRX is to create more opportunities for diverse programming of exceptional quality, interest, and importance to reach more listeners.”

As with any audio drama, the fate of a show often rests with its fan base. To see  Decoder Ring Theatre reaching out to their fans yet again comes as no surprise, and to see it working over the long-term, is even more encouraging. Decoder Ring Theater is not alone on the Public Radio Exchange either, there are a number of familiar audio drama podcast names in the PRX listings such as Icebox Radio Theater, Chatterbox Audio Theater and the Atlanta Radio Theater Company among others. Decoder Ring Theater summed up their fan based efforts like this:

Jack Kincaid Forms Slipgate Nine Entertainment

& Announces “Edict Zero”

Jack Kincaid noted author of the supernatural horror audiobook “Deadsville Nine” has formed Slipgate Nine Entertainment, and plans to launch a new audio drama podcast series.

The science fiction series dubbed “Edict Zero”, is planned for a September 9th premiere with a double episode release, along with some excerpts and extras rolling out in August. The main cast of Edict Zero is reported to include Jack Kincaid, James Keller, Julie Hoverson, Phil Rossi, Russell Gold and Tanja Milojevic. The full season of Edict Zero is set to include twenty episodes released twice a month over the course of its first year. A second season is possible if listener interest remains strong. As always, The Listening Post will be there to bring you all the latest details as Edict Zero goes live.

The Twitter-verse Meets The Audio-verse!

For better or worse, the phenomenon of character “Tweeps” has spread to Audio Drama. Spotting Captain Kirk or even Lord Voldemort of Harry Potter fame on Twitter is nothing terribly new, but did you know that now you can talk directly to audio drama characters?

What does Ares the God of War do when hes bored?… Twitter, of course! Thats right, those crazy characters at Pendant aren’t just talking anymore… they’re Tweeting! or is it Twittering? Either way, for Pendant Audio it all began with Ares The God of War, who was the first to jump on the Twitter wagon in a fit of boredom, (I mean what else is a god supposed to do for entertainment anyway? start wars or something?) Ares was quickly followed by Metallo and where  trouble goes, superheroes soon follow including Batman, Wonder Woman, Robin and Wonder Girl, Superman, Supergirl and Oracle, round out the hero crowd  while the humans include Clark Kent, Lex Luthor, Lois Lane, and  Sergeant Amelia Burgess of the GCPD just to name a few. With all this twittering going on one has to wonder how its going to effect the Heroes crime fighting skills; I mean isn’t it a bit tough to deliver a round house kick while typing with two thumbs? As if that weren’t enough even Mox Treeb of Pendant’s Star Wars: Blue Harvest has been spotted tweeting from a galaxy far far away… Boy I’d hate to see that long distance bill!

The inhabitants of Earth-P aren’t the only characters on Twitter either! You’ve Got Dead On You‘s Announcer has been around since the start of the show and he is quite the chatterbox. He can be spotted on Twitter as series announcer, and during his off hours, the Announcer often seen lamenting his money woes, arguing with his ex, or begging his boss for a pay raise. Okay, so maybe his life isn’t as glamorous as a superhero, but hes got all kinds of advice for the zombie apocalypse! So is all this Twittering the beginning of a trend? Could we see more characters twittering back and forth in the future?  More importantly, what would it take to get Byron or Doctor Xander Crowe on Twitter, and what would they talk about?…
