Recently I encountered the most courteous concierge who went far above and beyond any job description when he heard that I was flying into a city outside of California, where I couldn’t get a shuttle to my hotel due to a 6-hour flight delay. I had phoned the hotel I would be staying at to see if they would arrange for a taxi to pick me up upon my arrival (what woman likes to hang out at an unfamiliar airport at 3 am right? ….). No such luck. However, a friend of mine who I had spoken to on the phone had mentioned it to Scott MacIntosh, concierge at the Beverly Hills Peninsula who, to my surprise, immediately arranged for someone to pick me up near the gate, help me with my luggage and drive me safely to my destination. I’ve never even stayed at the Peninsula and yet they reached out across 2,000 miles and saved the day for me! What a pleasure to encounter someone so thoughtful. I’ll definitely remember him when I go gift shopping for the holidays!

Sun filled vacations

Baja California, Mexico is simply divine. There are no words to express the free and non crowded beaches, the golden days filled with sunshine and the perfect weather that lasts the year around, cooled by the rich sea-laden breezes. There are just too many activities to do in the Baja peninsula, and appeals to just about everyone. So whether one is looking for a sports adventure or a quite trek through ancient ruins to, Baja peninsula has it all. The variety of water sports is mind boggling, with surfing and kayaking topping the list, along with other activities such as diving, snorkeling, sailing and fishing.

Affordable real estate lures immigrants

The magic of the free and unfettered lifestyle and simple lifestyle appeals to all people and thousands of immigrants flock the shores of Baja California Mexico. In spite of its arid desert location Mexicali is watered through a system of aquifers in the valley, which was built to encourage agriculture. Mexicali Baja California now produces grapefruit, dates, vegetables, alfalfa, cotton, and cottonseed oil. Many US companies have set up base in Mexicali Baja California due to the availability of cheap labour.

Crema tenisului mondial masculin a descins in Londra, cu ocazia barclays ATP World Masters Tour.

In O2 in schimb, fiecare tenisman isi asteapta randul si democratia e impartita si pentru purcei, si pentru catei.

Vom afla curand cine va triumfa, cine va lua potul, acolo unde recent si Marian Dragulescu sfida legea acceleratiei gravitationale si dadea Romaniei si mai mult aur.

The two schools this week announced the master developers for the project, San Francisco-based TMG Partners and the Related Cos. of New York City.”

The living room runs along the opposite side of the house from the carport. This is the view from the carport door, past the kitchen peninsula, and into the living room. The windows behind the couch are visible from the exterior here and here.

The living room is embarrassingly IKEA-fied, but I love every bit of it. It was also a great solution to furnish a room with stuff we liked in time for our first round of visitors, who arrived two days after we moved in. The sofa is an IKEA Karlstad loveseat in Linneryd natural with a chaise add-on unit. The ottoman is an IKEA Karlstad footstool with a cover that I can’t find online. The end tables are the IKEA Stockholm side table in white/golden brown. They’re topped with Lykta table lamps in white. I love the Lykta lamps because they’re made of 100% glass–base, shade, everything is glass!

This is the fireplace, made with the same brick as the chimney visible from the exterior. I would love to replace the fireplace surround. It seems super ’80s compared to the rest of the house. I’m kind of into the concrete hearth, though. The rattan chair is the IKEA Vibbyn, which we got on clearance right before they stopped making it.

From the floor-to-ceiling window next to the fireplace, you can see straight through the master bedroom at the back of the house, out a similar floor-to-ceiling window, and into the blue spruce in the back yard. I hate the fact that the wood paneling on the wall at the left is painted brown. I really wish it were still natural, like it is in the guest cabin (that part of the tour is coming soon).

Next to the sofa is the “front” door, which is opposite the door from the kitchen to the living room, with the coat closet next to it.

The coat closet and the door from the kitchen to the living room are examples of the sliding interior doors in the house. Of the 12 interior doors in the house, ten of them are sliding. (The two standard doors don’t have adjacent walls with sufficient space to slide away.) I think it’s a great solution for a small house with narrow hallways.

This is what the kitchen door looks like closed. It reveals the wall that is hidden behind the door when it’s open.

Next up is the very exciting utility room.

If you’re anything like me, you eat a lot. After all, this beautiful Heavyweight Champion’s body didn’t happen by accident! My wrestling-physique aside, eating a lot requires a great deal of food. Keeping a great deal of food around is a real challenge when you’re on a budget like ours. The simplest answer is to cook, rather than order out, which nine-times-out-of-ten, is also healthier! But groceries can be expensive too! So it’s important to hunt around and find the cheapest groceries you can. That’s what we’ve done.

For certain groceries, like fresh fruits and vegetables, we’ve found that the Farmer’s Market is a great place to shop, but for canned goods, cereal, juice, and the like, we’ve found the best deals to be at The Grocery Outlet chains. Their selection is constantly changing, so it’s never a guarantee that the same foods are available, but the low prices are a constant.

For store locations and hours, visit the Grocery Outlet website.

As you enter the house through the doorway from the carport, the dining room is to your right, along the front of the house.

This is one of the places where I love the use of the clerestory windows in our house. In the dining room, they make it possible to sit at the dining room table with the blinds open at dusk without feeling like you’re on stage. They also frame the view of the neighborhood to emphasize trees and sky, rather than pavement and cars.

The storms fired after dark once again though this time they were 97% in-cloud lightning – not quite as spectacular but still pretty nice to watch and photograph. I managed to catch a little crawler popping out of the base over Rye, the cloud structure illuminated and a beautiful night sky above.

Come on in!

From the carport door, the kitchen is to the left. In the bottom right of this picture you can see the peninsula that separates the kitchen from the dining room. Through the doorway is the built-in cabinet in the hallway that leads to the back of the house and the bedrooms and bathroom.

This is the hot drink station I set up on the kitchen counter next to the door from the carport. The tea and coffee canisters are vintage, the tree trunk sugar bowl is from HomeGoods, and the mugs are Arzberg Move Weiß.

To the right of the drink station is the stove and microwave. The kitchen was recently renovated by the previous owners and features new black appliances, hezagonal slate tile backsplash and laminate counters. I’m pretty sure the cupboards, hardware, and flooring are from IKEA: Ädel in Medium Brown, Lansa in 6 5/16″, and Tundra in a light birch color.

Above the microwave I have these ceramic flour and sugar canisters on display.

Across from the stove there’s a doorway into the living room. Here you can see our media setup (problem area) in profile, the “front” door on the far side of the house, and the “front” closet to the left of the “front” door.

Through this doorway to the left is a built-in cabinet and the hallway to the private quarters of the house (bedrooms and bathroom).

Here’s the peninsula with a view to the fireplace in the living room.

And here’s the whole kitchen, seen from the dining room across the peninsula.

What to do

There are so many different things to do in Bangkok…..from dining experiences to attractions… Here are the top 3 places to visit in Bangkok…..

1. The Grand Palace

Grand Palace

This is one of the most photographed spots in the city…and with good reason. The palace was built over the course of 3 years at the end of the 18th century by King Rama I and is the official residence of the current monarchy. This is also where you will see the temple of Wat Pra Kaeo housing the 15th century Emerald Buddha whose robes are rotated three times a year by no less than the Thailand’s king himself.

2.Wat Sutat

Wat Sutat

The temple of Wat Sutat is interesting for its connection to an unusual ceremony designed to show appreciation to the gods for a bountiful rice harvest. A giant teak swing, erected just outside the temple entrance, was ridden by daring young men who would not only see how high they could go but also try to catch bags of coins with their teeth.

3. Muang Boran

Want to start out with a crash course in Thai culture? Make Muang Boran your first stop. This open air museum spans over 350 acres and is laid out to resemble the country of Thailand itself.

How to get there

Almost all airlines fly to this main city. Flights from major cities such as New York and Los Angeles average from 700 dollars. Thai Airlines flies to all major cities and is also a great airlines to fly with.

No obstante grandes porciones quedaron casi ilesas.

By STEVEN LUO Beat Political Director If there is an anti-tax mood in the electorate, it sure didn

Beat Political Director

If there is an anti-tax mood in the electorate, it sure didn’t show in Tuesday’s elections in the Bay Area.

Of 29 tax increases and bond measures placed before the electorate in the Bay Area, 22 passed, including most measures requiring a two-thirds majority.

The popularity of measures asking voters to tax others might not have been surprising. Measures to increase taxes on hotel stays in Brisbane, Burlingame, Millbrae, San Anselmo, San Bruno, San Mateo, and South San Francisco all passed with large majorities.

But even excluding those measures, more than two-thirds of the tax hikes, bond measures, and newly proposed taxes on the ballot — 15 of 22 — were approved by voters.

Measures supporting schools proved popular with voters Tuesday. Parcel tax measures in the Albany Unified School District, Acalanes Union High School District, Walnut Creek School District, Lagunitas Elementary School District, and Larkspur School District were all approved, along with school facilities bond measures in the Mill Valley School District and Shoreline Unified School District.

Parcel tax and most bond measures require two-thirds approval, though school bond measures require a smaller 55% majority.

Only voters in Santa Clara County bucked the trend, with parcel tax measures in the Santa Clara Unified School District and Fremont High School District falling short of the two-thirds mark despite achieving large majorities.

Cities looking to voters to help balance their budgets received more mixed results, though even here a majority of measures — 7 of 12 — passed, with one measure still too close to call.

A measure to impose a utility users tax in Newark served as a stark reminder that every single vote counts, with the No side ahead of the Yes side by only eight votes in election night totals. Additional provisional and absentee ballots have yet to be counted and will likely decide the race.

Other utility users taxes in Cupertino, Vallejo, and Portola Valley passed with large majorities.

Voters also approved a sales tax in San Mateo and parcel taxes in Fairfax and Atherton, but rejected a sales tax intended to support emergency services in San Carlos. A San Rafael bond measure for infrastructure upgrades for emergency services achieved a large majority, but fell short of the two-thirds approval required.

New or increased business license taxes were rejected by majorities in Palo Alto and Redwood City, though voters in Emeryville did approve a business license tax on the city’s card rooms.

Experts expressed surprise at the results — voters are notoriously reluctant to tax themselves, especially in a recession.

San Jose State political science professor Larry Gerston told KCBS radio that Tuesday’s results might cause other local governments, strapped for cash and squeezed by state budget cuts, to ask voters for increased funding.
