    Haunting films are getting really popular of late, and all of them seem to take a nod from Poltergeist, which in my book is the best haunted house film.  A lot of people are more fans of The Haunting, but I think the everyday family feel of the film puts it a step above that film.  It is a film that I get more enjoyment with every viewing.  It has a great story, excellent cast and some excellent special effects.  The film is really anchored by the heartfelt performance of Jobeth Williams as the mom that will do anything to keep her family safe.  Another great thing about this film is how it has given many viewers phobias of clowns.  I never looked at them the same way after watching this film and it has the most terrifying clown until Pennywise from IT.  The film has a real casual feel to it, so from the opening shot you are pulled in and it doesn’t let you go till the final frame of the film.

    The plot basics are this, the Freelings (Williams and Nelson) live in a idyllic housing division and everything is going great.  Until their youngest daughter Carol Anne (O’Rourke) begins connecting with otherworldly beings through their TV set.  At first it seems to be innocuous pranks but soon it takes a horrifying turn and Carol Anne is taken by the spirits and they will not let her go.  The Freeling’s then get a group of ghost hunters and they bring in a medium to rescue Carol Anne and exorcise the home of its demons.  At first it is a resounding success, but then the house attacks the family yet again and tries to prevent Diane (Williams) from saving her kids.  It all leads to them finding out the secret of the building of their house and why they have been besieged by vengeful spirits.

    This is a near perfect film.  Hooper’s direction is flawless, the mundane feeling of suburban life he sets the film up with feels completely natural and the way he slowly cranks up horror elements is a work of greatness.  It is like each scene is like making a cake and he is adding another layer with each scene.  The script is great as well, you really feel the dilemmas the family faces as the combat this spectral attack on their well being.  The characters of the mother and father are crafted very well and before all the horror falls upon them they are built up as very full and sympathetic characters.  The cast is amazing.  The lynchpins of the cast are of course Williams, O’Rourke and Rubinstein.  Williams is the moral and emotional anchor of the film and this is by far her best role.  O’Rourke is great as Carol Anne and she really portrays the precocious and frightened little daughter very well.  Rubinstein’s role is not much more than a extended cameo, but she is such a vital part of the film that it would not be the same without her.  The SFX and effects by ILM is stupendous.  The scene that always sticks with me is the ghost hunter who peels his face off in the bathroom, that still freaks me out.  The climax of the film with Williams in the pool surrounded by corpses is gut wrenching as well.  The score by Jerry Goldsmith is the final piece of the film that brings it all together.  The score is at times both harmonious and ethereal.  It really fits the film and if you hear the first few notes you know exactly what kind of film you are seeing.  This is a great Haunting film with a great sense of a family sticking together and fighting to overcome all the obstacles in their way.

Az eseményről egyelőre annyit tudni, hogy a pontos dátum április 30, a jegyárakat pedig 4.800 / 5.500 (elővételben) / 6.000 (helyszínen) forintos áron mérik majd. Egyébként Jim Lindbergh énekes idén augusztusban 19 év után elhagyta a Pennywise-t, ami után Téglás Zolival turnézott a csapat. Hogy hozzánk milyen felállásban jönnek, az még rejtély.

Filled with detail, everything about this book is sinister and will chill you to the bone.

An absolute horror classic that should be read by everyone.

Killer Sharks Comp.

When I was in 6th grade, 12 years old, I got a cassette tape in China Town in Philadelphia of a band called Pennywise… A year later I saw them in concert for the first time, oddly enough only a few blocks from where I originally got the tape. I was hooked!!!

Fast forward 16 years, they are still the top of my list of favorite bands, but just two weeks before I moved to LA, the singer quit the band!!!

No worries, because the rest of the band has forged forward!

After a recent APA meeting, I found myself at the Air Conditioned Supper Club where they played a show, vocals were filled in by Zoli, singer of the band Ignite.

Normally when you find decomposing bodies in someone’s basement as opposed to a graveyard, go ahead and assume they didn’t die of natural causes.

After all, when Grandpa has a heart attack and dies, your first instinct normally isn’t to bury him in the basement.

Then again, with what they rape you in funeral costs nowadays, maybe that’s not such a bad idea.  If Grandpa doesn’t mind having an air hockey table above his grave really, what’s the harm?

All in all this is a horrific story, somewhat reminiscent of John Wayne Gacy, who forever gave clowns a bad name along with this guy:

Though Pennywise (from Stephen’s King It for those of you scratching your heads) was much more terrifying with the make-up off:

You don’t even want to know where he keeps his clown horn.

Species Name: Creepyasfuckicus Childmolestius

Seeing as Halloween is tomorrow, it seemed only fitting to conquer my fear of the one thing in this world that terrifies me more than scientologists, CLOWNS.  Ever since I was a child, these fuckers have haunted my nightmares.  From Bozo to Pennywise to Homie the Clown, I don’t care, I hate them all.  What shithead thought these painted up child molesters would be enjoyable to children?  Everything about them is evil.  The painted white face, the bright red nose, that fucking creepy circus music that follows them wherever they go. I would much rather face Freddy Krueger, Jason Vorhees, and Michael Myers in a Battle Royale any day of the week over being in a dark alley with this fucker:

Georgie!  What the fuck are you thinking?!? Don’t take that goddamn balloon!  But see, that’s the problem, clowns are the worst because they prey on the innocence and naivete of children, making them that much more fucked up.  I know I’m not alone in my fear of clowns, so consider this thinning the herd as a public service and type of therapy for those of you plagued by night terrors brought on by these assholes.

In a world where clowns didn’t exist to send grown men running and screaming in terror:

• We wouldn’t have to worry about a group of KILLER CLOWNS FROM OUTER SPACE coming to Earth, turning us into cotton candy cocoons and sucking out our blood with a straw.

• I wouldn’t have needed rubber sheets on my bed as a child…and as an adult.
• John Wayne Gacy would’ve had to rely on his inherent creepiness as a serial killer instead of hiding behind makeup.

• Parents would no better than to let this molester anywhere near their kids.  He wants more then a hug…

• John Leguizamo would never have donned a fat suit in Spawn to somehow manage to make clowns even creepier

• I wouldn’t have to carry my 9MM at all times if I hadn’t seen this piece of psychotic shit:

• Everytime you see a Smart Car, you wouldn’t be worried about how many clowns are inside of it.
• The sound of circus music wouldn’t elicit a Pavlovian response in me to piss myself.

I dream of the day that I don’t have to live in  fear of a clown hiding in the bushes, waiting to steal my soul, or what semblance of a soul I have left.  See the problem is that it is common knowledge how scary clowns are, so there is definitely no end in sight to their reign of terror.  Expect them to be a common fixture in movies, television, and your psyche for years to come.  Although we can take solace in this clip, as a way to know that it is possible to overcome your fear of clowns…even zombie clowns:

So kids, if you see a zombie clown out tomorrow night while trick-or-treating, make sure you smash it’s face in with a large rubber mallet.  Fuck you clown.  Happy Halloween!

La historia se presenta desde la perspectiva de cada uno de sus protagonistas, alternada en dos épocas: el pasado (1957-58) y el presente (1984-85). Los hechos acontecen en la comunidad de Derry, en el estado de Maine, Estados Unidos. Bajo la ciudad, a un nivel inconsciente para todos los pobladores, un monstruo despiadado de apetito insaciable atormenta a la comunidad desde tiempos remotos. Este monstruo es un ser de otro mundo, capaz de leer las mentes y provocar los miedos, los cuales constituyen su alimento (preferiblemente los de los niños, cuyos miedos son muy sencillos de elaborar). Su disfraz más común es el de un payaso, llamado Pennywise, el payaso bailarín, con el que atrae a sus jóvenes víctimas, a las cuales aterrará hasta la muerte. Una vez saciado su apetito, duerme durante casi tres decenios, hasta que vuelve a despertar para alimentarse y hartarse, cumpliendo así un ciclo sin fin.

Aunque permanece oculto y acechando la mayor parte del tiempo, se enfrenta dos veces con los protagonistas de la historia; siete chicos que se hacen llamar «Los perdedores» cuyos nombres son: Bill Denbrough, Ben Hanscom, Beverly Marsh, Richie Tozier, Eddie Kaspbrak, Mike Hanlon y Stan Uris.

El primer encuentro (en 1958) sucede cuando son preadolescentes, asustados y aparentemente indefensos, pero con una poderosa capacidad de imaginar; unidos por sus lazos de amistad, reúnen la fuerza para enfrentarse a Eso y detener su ataque. Para lograrlo, lo enfrentan en su guarida; una vieja red de cloacas bajo la ciudad. En esta guarida, el monstruo toma la forma de una araña gigante y resulta gravemente herida, aunque logra escapar. Entonces, los chicos hacen un pacto: Si Eso regresa, ellos también lo harán. Eventualmente todos, excepto Mike, se van del pueblo y continúan con sus vidas. El segundo encuentro ocurre en 1985, cuando son adultos con vidas aparentemente plenas; sin embargo han perdido el poder de la imaginación. Pero cuando los ataques a los niños empiezan a ocurrir, Mike los convoca para que vuelvan a Derry. Al final, después de enfrentarse a sus peores temores, el grupo de amigos habrá de afrontar un último desafío, un trato: basta con que dejen vivir a Eso para que éste les conceda una larguísima vida, repleta de éxito, fortuna y todo lo que puedan desear. Sabiendo que es un engaño, le hacen frente en los más oscuros túneles, alcantarillas y cuevas de Derry, donde logran destruirlo, aunque todos y cada uno de ellos tendrán que pagar un alto precio.

5. THE ALIEN – Alien

 From the moment this Alien is conceived by means of an alien face-plant and after its chest popping birth in Ripley Scott’s Sci-fi horror masterpiece, The Alien in the movie Alien, has become one of the most recognizable horror monsters of all time.  From its stealth movements, long curving head and saliva pouring mouth, this monster has made movie-goers cringe for decades.  I place The Alien at number 5 because no other sci-fi horror monster comes close to magnitude and terror they have caused.  The film sequels were highly successful and launched this unhuman being into classic status within the horror and sci-fi genres of film. 

 4. FREDDY KREUGER – Nightmare on Elm St.

 Since, both Michael Myers and Leatherface are both human, you won’t see them on this list.  But out of the two highly successful slasher-film monsters, Jason Voorhees and Freddy Kreuger, I had to choose the one that still makes me shutter with fear at his very sight.  Nightmare on Elm St. gave us one of horrors most iconic figures in Freddy Kreuger.  Born out of the mind of Wes Craven, who claims he was inspired to create Kreuger from an experience as a boy looking out his window and seeing a man in a stripped sweater and fedora peering through his garbage that gave him nightmares, Kreuger has given plenty of nightmares to movie-goers for years now.  Which, when you think about it, having a nightmare about Kreuger (seeing that he kills people in their dreams) is a terrifying experience.  Despite the more comedic turn he took over the years, no one can disregard this burnt, knife wheeling monster his iconic status. 

3. ZOMBIES (Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead, etc.)

28 Days Later and horror-comedies Shaun of the Dead and Zombieland, have put zombies back on the map.  Personally, I don’t find zombies very frightening, but their cult-like status in the genre most be rewarded.  The original zombie films by Romero will continue to be the scariest, but new filmmakers are finding more and more ways to revive this cult icon. 

2. FRANKESTEIN’S MONSTER (KARLOFF)/DRACULA (LUGOSI)

 We can argue that all the Universal Monsters from the 1930’s and 1940’s should be on this list, but Boris Karloff’s Frankenstein’s Monster and Bela Lugosi’s Dracula, are two of the most recognizable movie monsters of all time.  Both of these monsters terrified audiences in 1931, giving birth to the main stream era of horror films.  Lugosi’s powerful stare and Karloff’s incredible make-up made them instant symbols of horror movies.  Their success gave birth to Universal Studios’ other monsters, like Lon Chaney Jr.’s Wolf Man and Karloff’s return to screen as the Mummy.  An adaptation of H.G. Well’s “The Invisible Man” continued Universal’s rise.  But both Karloff and Lugosi will forever remain the symbols of these iconic literary figures.  The success of The Bride of Frankenstein only made Karloff and the Universal Monsters even more successful. 

 Today neither of these monsters seem all that scary.  But taken in the context of the times they were released, these two monsters were at the top of the world – scaring audiences everywhere.  They may not be accurate adaptations of Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein” of Bram Stoker’s “Dracula” but they have now become our first image of these fabled creatures. 

1 BRUCE THE SHARK – JAWS

No other monster has continued to terrify us more than Bruce (bet you didn’t know that is what he was called on set).  Spielberg’s Jaws, an adaptation of Peter Benchley’s novel of the same title, became a world-wide phenomenon in the summer of 1975.  Although the movie is anything but the traditional dark, ominous horror films that are a staple of the genre, this bright, sunny classic made more people scream than ever before. 

Till this day, people who see this film are afraid of going into the ocean.  Admit it, that even today when you are wading through the murky shores of the Jersey shore or Martha’s Vineyard or wherever you may be, that you think about Bruce pulling you under and tearing you limb from limb.  Let’s face it, shark attacks are real, despite the fact that something the size of Bruce with the mindset of solely eating humans probably doesn’t exist, a shark bite can still happen – and still do. 

No matter what genre you put Jaws in, it is still one of my all-time favorite films.  Spielberg’s ability to create a peachy, warm and sunny beach town with a horrifying monster lurking in it is a pure cinematic masterpiece.  Over 30 years later no other shark movie has had the impact that Jaws has had.  The other monsters on our list may scare us and may be unforgettable, but none of them can continue to scare movie-goers like the 25-foot great white shark named Bruce.   

Honorable Mentions:  Pinhead, The Candyman, Chucky, and Pennywise the Clown.

Pennywise Head Dies At 73

LALL PALADEE, founder/Chairman of Pennywise Cosmetics Limited passed away peacefully at the age of 73 on Friday at his Sai Centre, two houses away from his Prescott Lane, Tunapuna home.

Paladee was described by many as the “Community Charity Guru” for he was popularly known for serving people and helping them by giving groceries, establishing medical camps, giving away new clothes, medicines and eye glasses as well as building homes for the destitute.

On Friday at about 7 am Paladee went to his nearby Sai Centre to perform his daily meditation and offering of prayers. He was sitting in the centre, which he built, when he died.

Paladee’s funeral will take place tomorrow at about 9.30 am at his home in Tunapuna and then to the Daaha Sanshaar at the Caroni Cremation Site. All the eight branches and one warehouse of Pennywise Cosmetics will be closed as a mark of respect.

Speaking with Sunday Newsday, one of Paladee’s son, Satnarine, who is one of the directors in the company, described his father as a loving individual. He assured that he and his siblings will continue to carry on his father’s legacy. “He was such a loving person, very strict but loved by all. He built a centre accommodating all religions and served the community. He was fondly called ‘Mister Service’. We love him and he will be missed.”

Paladee was a frequent visitor to India, having visited there about 20 times and given the fact that he was a very strong Sathya Sai Baba devotee, considered himself blessed when he met with Sathya Sai Baba on three occasions, including a private session.

Paladee was the husband of Shanti and father of six children – five boys and one girl. He was also the grandfather of 12.

Paladee was born to Kausilya and Shree Paladee on November 20, 1935. He attended the Tunapuna CM (now Presbyterian) School, where he gained the School Leaving Certificate at the age of 15. He immediately entered the world of work, his first job being with a business in Tunapuna where he earned 50 cents per day as a salesman, among other things.

After three and a half years he joined Louis Thomas as a van salesman engaged in wholesaling haberdashery lines. His stay, however, was short-lived because one day his keen business sense spotted an opportunity for self-employment and with Thomas’ blessings, he launched out on his own.

He was about 19 years old at the time when he ventured into the wholesale business selling haberdashery items including hair pins, clips, toothbrushes, etc.

Initially he walked the streets, taking an order from a shop keeper or store owner and then returning with the merchandise. In the beginning, because capital was very limited, he had to fill order by order and there were times when on Fridays, especially, he would travel several times to Port-of-Spain to turn over his capital and deliver orders.

From pounding the pavements he graduated to a bicycle, which he won in a raffle. He then bought a used Husky van, followed by an almost new Husky motorcar. Eventually he bought a new Hillman Hunter station wagon, TW series. Between the ages of 37 and 40 years, Paladee suffered three heart attacks, which forced him out of business and confined him to home for several years. His wife, Shanti played a significant role. Her earnings as a professional seamstress and income received from her sewing classes helped sustain her family during this difficult period.

The Chaguanas market provided the solid foundation upon which the present corporate business was established. From small, insignificant beginnings the wholesale/retail business founded by Lall Paladee became LPS Trading, then Lall Paladee and Sons Trading as Pennywise Cosmetics and in 1996 the business was incorporated as Pennywise Cosmetics Limited.
