The next meeting of the Cornwall Social Media Café (CSMC) will take place from 6pm on Wednesday 21 O

The next meeting of the Cornwall Social Media Café (CSMC) will take place from 6pm on Wednesday 21 October at CUC’s Tremough Campus in Penryn. (map). The room is Seminar Room L in the Daphne du Maurier building, and it will be clearly signposted ‘Cornwall Social Media Café’.

It’s a bit of a special one, and we’re very excited about it.

We’re delighted to announce that we will have a VIP guest speaker in the form of Lloyd Davis, the original founder of the Social Media Café / Tuttle Club concept, and legendary man-about-the-social-media-scene in London. You can read more about Lloyd at his blog www.perfectpath.co.uk, and follow him on Twitter at @LloydDavis.

Lloyd will be delivering a talk on social media collaboration earlier in the day to students at UCF, and will stay on at Tremough to talk to the Cornwall Social Media Café in the evening. He’ll share with us the history of London’s Tuttle Club – on which CSMC is modelled – and give his expert view on where he sees social media heading in future.

I’ve attended a couple of events hosted by Lloyd in the past and I can personally vouch for the fact that he’s a very engaging, knowledgeable and inspiring speaker, as well as being generally a lovely person. Definitely worth making a trip to Tremough for!

Lloyd’s talk will be followed by informal networking, giving you the chance to catch up with other CSMC members and make new friends and contacts from Cornwall’s business, academic, media, not-for-profit and public sector communities.

If you’ve never attended a CSMC event before, this would be an excellent one to start with. You’ll get a great introduction to the Social Media Café concept from the founder himself, as well as getting to know other keen social media users from across the county.

CSMC events are free to attend, and new members are always very welcome. All we ask is that you register your attendance in advance so we have a rough idea of numbers on the night.

Teas, coffees and biscuits will be served on arrival.

In the meantime if you have any questions, please contact Aren, Laura or me.

Looking forward to seeing you on the 21st!

I have chosen this as my headstone of the week because I have absolutely no idea who he is! I believe he is buried in England because of the inscription which reads:

I have tried to find Percy Augustus Pellowe and come up with just one entry on the 1881 census when he was age one, living in the household of Nicholas Pellowe in The Civil Parish of Falmouth, Penryn, Cornwall ~ and I find no Pellowe connected with the Ship HMS Goliath , which was sunk in May of 1915, 4 months before Percy died!

I am posting this in the hope somebody will recognize the name and let me know who they are or how they connect to the Niess family in Washington DC!

Even tho intel might be limping after being hit fullspeed by the economic crisis, it’s not pulling back from the market. On the contrary, its pushing back like a bat out of hell. The famous chip maker announced a powerful market campaign aimed towards the mobile computing industry stating that ”The trend toward notebooks is one of the most important megatrends,” said Stephen Smith, vice president and director of business operations for Intel’s Digital Enterprise Group.

Intel had the brilliant idea of incorporating a graphics processor into it’s chip setup. That’s gonna be cool to watch when it’s gonna happen.
The 32-nanometer mobile processor code-named Arrandale was originally expected to show up on the markets in 2010, but it seems Intel went ahead and are gonna bring it out ahead of schedule.
Below you can see an image of intel’s CPU roadmap (lets hope that the “double the processing power every 18 months” motto will still be available).

I’ve been agonizing over what to do about my dying computer. Normally, I would put it out to pasture as a backup and build a new machine from scratch. I did some Core i7 pricing tonight. While the processors themselves are quite comparable to the Penryn chips, the motherboard and memory prices are out of sight.

So I got to thinking. Is this the right time to go crazy on hardware? I decided that it’s not. So I just bought a new motherboard, chip and RAM with a Zalman cooler. I’m going to replace these parts only in my main machine and keep the video card and raptor hard drives and everything else.

I did splurge on the Q9550. I think with the Zalman, I should at least get 3.6 GHz. It will easily be the fastest computer I’ve ever worked with. It will be faster than my kids’ computers and the upgrade cost me less than $600. It would have been over $2000 building a new Core i7 system. I think, for now, this was the smart way to go.

In 2003 the market for portable PCs was booming and Intel had only two processors for them: the aging Pentium III Tualatin and the Pentium 4, whose high power consumption made it unsuitable. But a savior was to arrive from Israel: the Banias (alias Pentium M). This processor, based on the P6 architecture (the same as the Pentium Pro) had high performance and low power consumption. It even beat the Pentium 4, while consuming a lot less power. This was the processor used in the Centrino platform and it was quickly followed (in 2004) by the (faster) Dothan model. The Pentium M left its mark on the world of mobility, and the Stealey (A100) still uses the Dothan architecture (with lower frequencies and TDP).

As with the Pentium 4, the FSB actually operated at a quarter of the nominal frequency (QDR). The connector used, the Socket 479, actually had 478 pins, but they were arranged differently from the Pentium 4 Socket 478 (though adapters were made).

Pentium 4 Gets 64-bit And Another Core

In 2005, Intel improved its Pentium 4 twice. First, with the Prescott-2M, and then with Smithfield. The former was a 64-bit processor, based on the Prescott design, and the latter was a dual-core processor. They are fairly similar and have the same problems as other Pentium 4s: low instructions per cycle (IPC) throughput and difficulty in increasing the clock frequency due to current losses. These two processors, intended to limit losses while awaiting the Core 2 Duo, are not among Intel’s most highly regarded. And while the Pentium D (the commercial name of the Smithfield) does have two cores, in reality it’s an assembly of two Prescott dies in the same package.

An interesting point is that whereas the Pentium 4 processors intended for the consumer market did not use the PAE technology (which enables 36-bit, as opposed to 32-bit memory management) and were therefore limited to 4 GB of RAM, these models can go beyond that limit. In practice, the address bus is still limited to 36 bits (40 bits on the Xeon), but PAE (management in 4 GB pages) is now ancient history—a 64-bit program is capable of making full use of the available memory.

Hyper-Threading, an Intel SMT technology, was available on certain models (Xeon and Extreme Edition). Finally, a 65 nm version (the 9×0 series) of the Pentium 4 was released later, but made no major improvements.

The First Mobile Dual-Core

In 2006, Intel announced the Core Duo. The first dual-core processor for portable PCs boasted excellent performance—much better than the Pentium 4. It was also one of the first x86 processors to be truly dual-core. The cache, for example, is shared (whereas the Pentium D was more like an assembly of two processors in the same package). This processor was part of the Centrino Duo platform and was a huge success. The only drawback was that it was still a 32-bit processor, unlike the Pentium 4.

A Core Solo version with one core was also made available, and the low-power-consumption versions used a 533 MHz bus (133 MHz QDR) instead of 667 MHz. This processor was used in servers (code name Sossaman), which was a first for a processor originally intended for the mobile world. Note that this processor didn’t officially use the Core architecture of the Core 2 Duo, and it was quickly replaced by the Core 2 Duo (Merom) in portable PCs. Also, the Yonah’s Socket 479 is different from the Socket 479 of other Pentium M processors.

In 2006, Intel released a processor that quickly became a best-seller: the Core 2 Duo. Derived from work done on the Pentium M, this processor uses a new Core architecture. Before, Intel had two lines of processors—the Pentium 4 for desktops, Pentium M for mobiles, and both lines for servers. In contrast, Intel now has a single micro-architecture on which all of its product lines draw. The 64-bit Core 2 Duo is represented from the low end to the high end, for desktop computers, portables and servers.

There are many versions of the architecture, resulting in configurations with a different number of cores (one to four, yielding everything from Solos to Quads), cache memory (512 KB to 12 MB), and the FSB (between 400 and 1600 MHz). The model shown here is the original Core 2 Duo, but faster versions (at 45 nm) exist.

The mobile versions (Merom) are basically identical (but not as fast, with a slower FSB) whereas the Extreme Edition versions are faster. The Core 2 Duo also exists in a four-core version, which was, in fact, two Conroes in the same package. The 45 nm version of the Core 2 Duo (Penryn) has a larger cache and generates less heat, but is still fundamentally similar to this model.

Obviously, this is only the first part of a series of articles. The second part, on AMD processors, will follow (along with a piece on AMD’s ATI graphics cards). But the story of the Intel x86 processors doesn’t end with the Core 2 Duo, and obviously other models are planned for the future. Nehalem and Atom are also x86 processors. And a little bird tells us that Intel’s upcoming entry into the graphics market, Larrabee, is also based on a number of x86 cores.

Okay it’s done! I’ve done it. I’ve placed my order for a Macbook Pro. But it’s not the new ones you’re thinking of. I’ve been waiting for quite some time for Apple to refresh the Macbook family and that time has come and gone. The new Macbooks look beautiful, internally and externally. There’s some great innovation going on and some revolutions in laptop engineering. But all that R&D and new engineering didn’t come without cutbacks and compromises. The new Macbooks are missing the beloved Firewire 400 ports, DVI and mouse button. Hang on what? Yes, Apple has once again done the impossible and moved from a 1 button trackpad to a zero button trackpad. The button of course, is the trackpad itself. Graphics also haven’t made any substantial improvements over the 8600GT. On top of that, the Pro line does not offer true HybridSLI capabilities. One card merely substitutes the other in high end graphics situations. Finally, little has changed in terms of the CPU clock speed and chips being used in the new models. Perhaps the next round of speed bumps will offer a greater departure from the current specs. All of this culminated into my final decision to purchase the previous Macbook Pro (Penryn) after months of waiting. At $500 less the retail price I should mention : )

Unboxing photos and comments as soon as it arrives.

Also, lay down your comments below about Apple’s new portable line. Let me know what you think.
