Nearly a third of people approaching retirement still plan to use their property to boost their income despite recent house price falls.

Around 27% of those aged over 50 said they planned to use money tied up in their home to provide themselves with a retirement income, such as through downsizing or releasing equity, according to life insurer LV=.

The average homeowner in this age group believes around £27,000 has been wiped off the value of their property during the downturn.

But despite this only 2% of people said house price falls had put them off using their home to fund their retirement.

The research also found that previous house price booms have left many people reliant on the wealth tied up in their property, with 12% admitting they had saved less into a pension because of the rising value of their home.

A further 13% claimed they could not afford to buy their own property and invest in a traditional pension because house prices were so high.

A third of homeowners think it will take between three to five years for house prices to return to their former values.

Around 17% of people hope to recoup some of their lost equity by carrying out home improvements, while 21% will save extra and 29% will wait for house prices to recover.

Vanessa Owen, head of equity release at LV=, said: “In the decade leading up to the credit crunch, more and more homeowners saw their property as a potential cash cow to aid retirement.

“But in a matter of months millions of pre-retirees have seen both their property and pension fund values battered. Despite this, their confidence in the long-term value of bricks and mortar remains.”

I hope you used the tips and the posts from this month to re-invent your relationship with money. It

I hope you used the tips and the posts from this month to re-invent your relationship with money. It’s a sure way to realize the future you created for yourself faster.

Since my LIFE LAYOUT is mostly about retiring in a couple of years, I really needed to get serious about money.

Here’s what I did:

I began by calculating how much money I would need monthly to be able to live in retirement and cover financial risks. I realized I needed additional information so I contacted my benefits department to learn:

The exact amount and start date of my future monthly pension

An estimate of my 401(k) plan total at my planned retirement date

Transferability of my medical, dental, and vision, and life insurance

2. The news? My monthly pension and 401(k) were both higher than I realized. Fantastic!

While my health and life insurance weren’t transferable, I would have Cobra to fall back on (if I can’t get less expensive health insurance) until Medicare kicks in. And I will leave my employment insurable for both health and life. My benefits representative helped me estimate these costs. So I factored all of this into my budget.

3. I budgeted for $100,000 of life insurance to cover burial costs and a small legacy for each of the kids. Just enough for a first house down payment, extra schooling, or to start a new business.

4. I added in the cost of a good long term care insurance policy to cover retrofitting a home, assisted living, at home care, or a nursing home. If I become infirmed, I don’t want my kids to suffer financially or have to make difficult decisions based on money.

5. I reviewed my annual Social Security statement to calculate my monthly income at various ages.

6. When it was all said and done, I could enter retirement debt-free, pay for the move, and maintain a modest nest egg. But, because I’m insistent that I want to cover all financial and health risks and maintain my current discretionary spending habits, I’m $800 short of what I need monthly for a couple of years. Airplane tickets to visit the children and grandchildren and books I’m not really willing to cut back on!

I can easily cover this shortfall, without touching the nest egg, with my writing, book sales, and my marketing and job search business.

7. To test out my calculations, I began living on my retirement budget as of my mid-November paycheck. The rest I’m plowing into the 401 (k) plan. My employer has a very generous match and I’m fully vested now. I can always cut back on my contribution if I absolutely have to. But because my contribution is not taxable, I increased my income tax withholding allowances. This softened the blow to the net paycheck somewhat.

It’s amazing how focused I’ve become, especially about the “nickel and dime” spending! Here’s the test I use: Am I willing to pay to move this? Am I willing to compromise my retirement strategy for this?

I’m cleaning out all of my books – you know how heavy those are to move- and selling unwanted books at the book store. Pin money for sure, but I cover a sack or two of groceries with each trip.

I sold my treadmill which is, of course, like brand new, too heavy to move, and the walk from my apartment to the fitness room is, after all, more exercise.

I’m not renewing any magazines.

I sold the extra TV, which brought in a little cash, but saved $50 on the monthly cable bill.

I experiment with a generic or store brand item every shopping trip. I previously have been “brand loyal” no matter the cost. it’s been a real eye-opener for me how less costly items can be very satisfactory.

But here’s the most fun and powerful budget move I made, totally inspired by Nadia’s rule to “buy everything you would typically buy anyway at the lowest price”:

I made a spreadsheet of everything I routinely buy: groceries, cosmetics, pet, and household, by brand name. Yes, it took a while! But I already had an Excel spreadsheet grocery list with little boxes to check that I use to create my shopping list. So that helped.

The list of items went down the left hand column of the spreadsheet.

Then, across the top, I titled each column for a store at which I typically shop: Target, CVS Pharmacy, Walgreens, Petsmart, HEB Plus. I could have added Walmart, but it’s a little further than the others and I rarely shop there. These are my “go-to” stores. I rarely veer.

I printed out the list, clipped it to a clipboard, and stashed it in the car.

Over the last few weeks, as I’ve shopped, I’ve been jotting down the prices of my items at each of the stores. Not the sale prices, the regular prices. Someone more ambitious might do a field trip and knock it out in one day. That is not me.

So I’m about a third of the way in completely listing and comparing the routine cost of each of my routinely purchased items. But my master grocery list is already expanded and continually updated by store. When I’m in Walgreen’s, I pick up certain items. In Target, others. And, of course, I buy my $50 of sale items I typically purchase. So I’m always buying low.

I’m not obsessive about it but frankly, before now, I bought strictly on convenience. I couldn’t have told you the cost of anything I purchased routinely if my life depended on it. I’m already seeing a difference in my budget. And it’s kind of fun. It’s a challenge I’m freely embracing to meet my goal.

Me, thrifty. Somewhere my kids are laughing…

The American Retirement Savings Dilemma

The problem with the American retirement system is that there truly is no American retirement system

The problem with the American retirement system is that there truly is no American retirement system.

Think about it…

We have Pension plans (defined benefit plans) once thought to be the corner stone of a retirement plan (until they became too expensive to administer) and are now being phased out gradually.

Social Security (SSI) was invented to be a supplement to a pension but it has become the primary income source for most seniors and is severely underfunded. Average SSI check is currently alittle over $1,100. The current condition of SSI is so bad they put a warning on the front page of your annual SSI statement basically saying “hope you are not counting on us.”

Then we have a 401k plan (defined contribution plan) and IRAs which are supposed to supplement social security which was supposed to supplement a pension which was supposed to provide retirement income you couldn’t outlive.

Are you noticing that everything is supplementing everything else and nothing is primary? In fact the one thing we do know about ourselves is that Americans spend too much, acquire excessive debt, do not save and hope to retire in comfort. Obviously something has to give and it has been our retirement. All of the plans mentioned have failed the vast majority of Americans. This is the dilemma facing the retirees of today and tomorrow.

Conventional wisdom (television, magazines, newspapers, etc…) tells you the answer to your retirement lies in the next bull market. Unconventional wisdom tells you to see the “bull” in that type of thinking and that conventional wisdom has not worked and you need to find alternative methods of building wealth in today’s society. After all if what you thought to be true was not true when would you want to know about it?

For many different reasons there is a lot of interest in the retirement age – it affects both the wa

For many different reasons there is a lot of interest in the retirement age – it affects both the way people feel about their lives and it affects the economy. There are at least two different meanings that are attached to the term “retirement age”. One refers to the age at which people can draw their state pension and another refers to the age at which employers are able to ‘require’ people to retire from work. A third meaning is about the age at which workers proactively choose to retire.

One reason for the current interest is the huge potential liability that is building up if the state has to cover a relatively early retirement age for a population that is living longer and longer. By some estimates, over 50% of children born now will live to be over 100 years old. At the current retirement age this will mean providing pensions to this group for over 35 years of retirement – a third of their lifetime! No economy could support this.

The government will be considering this issue right now and one question they will be asking will be ‘is retirement good for people or not?’ A few years ago I read about some research that examined this issue directly. The study looked at which groups were most psychologically healthy – people who had retired early; those who retired at the normal age; or those who were working after retirement age. The results showed that the healthiest groups were those who had retired early and those who were working after retirement age. These were strange results in a way – suggesting that both retiring early and carrying on working are better than retiring at the normal age! In fact, a closer look at the findings clears things up because people who retired early were only healthier if they had chosen to retire; similarly people working after retirement were only happier if they had no financial need to carry on working. It seems like control is an important factor when it comes to retirement.

Obviously the retirement age needs to increase from an economic perspective and there are no simple solutions, but according to these findings pushing older people out of the workforce before they are ready to go is not the answer. Allowing people to have the option to continue working after retirement age is desirable – this will allow people to improve their financial position and provides a sense of purpose. If they are financially sound they are more likely to be happy to carry on working and will require less in terms of support from the state. At the end of the day, this is a social and psychological issue as well as an economic one.

You can find the research in the British Journal of Psychology (2004), 95, 297–324

U.S. Congressmen who serve for at least five years get a very generous defined benefit pension plan

U.S. Congressmen who serve for at least five years get a very generous defined benefit pension plan in retirement — the kind that doesn’t exist anymore in the private sector because it’s impossible to fund. It’s far more generous than that of even the longest-serving federal employees.

Appropriations Chairman David Obey, for example, could quit his job this January and take home $139,200 in 2010. In a decade or so, with cost-of-living adjustments, he could be making more than his current salary of $174,000. And he isn’t the only one.

Former Rep. William Jefferson of Louisiana, a Democrat, will continue his service in a different federal institution — prison. He was sentenced recently to serve 13 years for bribery. But he is still eligible for a guaranteed $50,000 pension in his first year of retirement, which will increase each year thereafter with the cost of living.

Even if we don’t begrudge them their oversized paycheck, do our congressmen — even the bad ones — deserve a retirement that is more than twice as nice as most ordinary working people enjoy?

The Irish Senior Citizens Parliament appreciated Taoiseach Brian Cowen’s understanding of the difficulties facing older people in his statement of November 18 on the importance of the State Pension and the other support schemes for older people such as the travel, TV licence and telephone allowance.

We in particular noted where Taoiseach Cowen stated that “we should also be mindful that there is a large amount of people who don’t have a lot of disposable income … and, therefore, rely solely on the state pension”. He also went on to say that he was “proud of the provision we made for pensioners during the good years. It is not my objective to undo all of that good work now”.

The ISCP were pleased to note An Taoiseach’s assurances that there will be no dismantling of the social infrastructure, including various schemes which are in place to support Older People’s health & welfare, in addition to pensions. “An Taoiseach’s remarks – in particular the further remarks on his webcast – demonstrate an understanding of the various schemes and services, put in place over decades, which protect Older People’s dignity such as the travel and fuel schemes.

Máiréad Hayes, the Parliament’s CEO stated: “We are conscious that we face a difficult situation but it should be appreciated that we in the Parliament hear on a daily basis from Older People living in fear of what is to come.” We will hold An Taoiseach to his promise not to ‘undo the good work’ and to be ‘sensitive to the needs of our pensioners’.

“We would also like to say ‘thank you’ to all our member organisations regarding their lobbying efforts to defend their services & pensions. Keep up the good work in the couple of weeks remaining before Budget 2010”, exhorted Ms. Hayes.

PPM-portfölj I:

BlackRock Latin American A2 USD Acc 25 %
HQ Indienfond 20 %
SKAGEN Global 15 %
SKAGEN Kon-Tiki 20 %
UBS (Lux) Key Sel. SICAV 2 – Asian Equities 130/30 (USD) P-acc 20 %

Enter Maximal	25 %
BlackRock World Mining Fund A2 USD Acc	30 %
First State Global Emerging Markets Leaders Fund A Acc	15 %

An insurance company has launched a competition to find a new name for pensions after research showe

An insurance company has launched a competition to find a new name for pensions after research showed one in five people found the term off-putting.

Axa said just 4% of people liked the word pension, while 18% associated it with grey and one in 10 said they thought the term was too old fashioned.

Young people were most likely to be put off by the word pension, with 72% saying they associated it with old age.

Elaine Higgleton, editorial director at Collins English Dictionaries, said: “The word pension is part of the fabric of British life, but clearly some younger people are finding it off-putting.

“I’m not sure why – perhaps they associate it with a period of life that is just too far off for them to think about. Perhaps it’s the association with pensioner, meaning an elderly person.

“Whatever the reason, the word pension does not seem to be encouraging people to save for the future, and a new name might give pensions a new image.”

Axa has teamed up with Collins English Dictionaries to find a new word or phrase for pensions.

People can submit suggestions at www.axa.co.uk/mybudgetday between Monday November 23 and Thursday November 26, after which a shortlist of five potential names will be selected.

The public can vote on the shortlist and the winning name will be announced on Sunday December 6.

The creator of the new name for pensions will win £4,953, the equivalent of a year’s state pension for a single person.

Whatever your view on the matter serious considerations need to be made how to fund your retirement.

CS PURAM- GEETA
Our neighbour was a driver in KSRTC, living in rented house.
His daughter Geeta was a dark, tall, slim girl, working in a shop at Palakad town. She has a younger brother, still in school when, we were there.
An offer came for her hand. The boy is handsome. His parents are well to do, both getting pension, in addition to their savings, a house in Thiruvanthapuram etc. They have only this son whom they want to entrust to a reliable loving girl.
At that point we had to go to Delhi. On our return, we brought Ammu, Sudha’s daughter Meghna, who was only two years old, as there was nobody to look after her, when the parents went to work.
There was no such decision. We were inside the railway compartment. Damodaran and Sudha were on the platform. When my wife stretched her hands and called Ammu, she jumped into her hands; the train moved. So that was how she came in our custody. As some wit put it, we bring babies into this world, jus to play with them!
I used to take her wherever I went, in the village. She never showed any sign of remembering her parents; but, when Damodaran and Sudha got into the autorickshaw on their return, after a brief vacation with us in the village, she went away with them, without once turning bach to look at us! My wife was on the point of tears.
One day Geeta came from Thiruvananthapuram. She looked serious. Her man was a spoilt child. After break fast, he goes away with his friends to roam about in the city. At noon, he comes back, takes rest and again, in the evening another outing, returning home after dinner in the restaurants.
Three times, she has to wash his cloths. Always, he goes in clean ironed cloths. Geeta is his washer woman.
An itching caused a nuisance to me. Nothing was visible. Thuppan told me it is caused by small mice. After observing my abdomen he confirmed it.
I went to a doctor, who gave me a medicine to be applied all over my body, for seveal days. No relief came except when it is applied.
Then I poured kerosine oil all over my body. My body became clean. I became fair, but the mice thrived.
Murugan told it comes from the river water. Several persons are victims, not myself alone. It was little consolation.
In March 2000, we came to see Leena’s baby and could not go back to CS Puram, as there was nobody to help her. My mice disappeared, without any reason. I was very much releaved.
The baby born on the auspicious day, when Ammathiruvady is brought to our ancestral home, on Makam of the month of Meenam, every year, was named Ananya.
Premchand, Leena’s father-in-law was also there. They stayed at their son Shishir’s house at Lajpatnagar, quite near to our place, and he woud come to see Ananya daily.
He was younger to me, very jolly, but suffering from diabetes and heart trouble. Doctors at AIIMS had recommended biopsy. I think a ring was inserted already.
At his instance I too joined the Yoga course, for ten days, provided by the AIIMS, free of cost.
Of course, the classes were good, but of no use, unless we continue the practice during our life time. This is not practicable. A proper study to determine the efficacy of the system, I believe, has not been conducted. The pulse rate comes down. That is because we remain in a detached atmosphere, free from normal tensions. The same experience can be had, when we pray at a temple or church etc.
In the library attached to the Yoga cell, I came across a remarkable book titled POWER HEALING by Dr. Leo Galland. He is a normal allopathic doctor, who examines those cases, where doctors are unable to find out the root cause and fail. He has recorded a number of strange cases. In one case, doctors treated a patient for heart attack who died after repeated attacks. His investigation revealed that, the patient died of carbon monoxide poisoning. The deceased was working in an old cellar, peeling off plaster, under which the poisonous gas had accumulated, over a long time, in some pockets. THE POISON CAUSED THE SYMPTOMS OF HEART ATTACK.
Another case was a young girl whose skin was extremely dry. She was a schizophrenic patient. Seeig her skin, the doctor told her to take cod liver oil, which contans omega 3 fatty acids. AFTER SOME SIX MONTHS, SHE RETURNED TO GIVE HIM THANKS. She was cured of her mental condition. Now this oil is given routinely to all mental patients in England, I read in the news paper.

Yesterday my wife and I were in Safeway and an older gentlemen in front of us didn’t have his Safeway club card to save $1 on cat litter. So I gave him my club card to use and he saved the dollar. The lady at the register said a dollar is a dollar and the guy was like I sure know that! He was telling us how he was living off his pension which was around $750 a month. I thought to myself $750 to live off of each month?! HOLY CRAP. He really didn’t look like there was much hope in his eyes and just looked dejected with life. I guess, $750 is not a lot of money. He went on to say how earlier in his life he was sold on the idea that the Canadian Pension Plan would give him the freedom for his retirement. Yeah umm he was totally sold a crock and $750 doesn’t buy you ANY freedom. Who knows what CPP will be left for me when we retire!

So that’s why we are working hard to build this business and share it with others who want more out of life then $750 dollars when you turn 65. There WON’T be any money for us when we turn 65 so it’s up to us to take our freedom into our own hands and this business will allow us to do that. Isn’t that worth it? Wouldn’t it just be worth it to at least try? I think so and I totally believe.

Today I returned from a two days a little trip Ranca with lungs full of ozone, the brains that I ached for so quiet, learned the noise of the city … with my eardrums to pop creased or wrinkled from so high, and with a few pounds less, because pension rose to INA, because in it I was in a group of 10 people, all my friend’s colleagues. The weather was gorgeous, with a friendly sun with us, without a bit of cloud tops were seen only in the distance Mount Parang, with some snow, otherwise a bit of snow, the party is at 2 km, the guesthouse where I was staying, looking like a country road, with and normal to be so, not covered with snow … Initially, before leaving, had to get chains for the car to a colleague’s words of my friend, proved to welcomed as a joke for me, anyway I had no car chain, can you pick up the dog, to put it … If you want to climb the mountain brave like you to rent an ATV, one million an hour. Also, the room was 130 EUR, double room with private bathroom, TV and balcony overlooking a pine forest on the mountain. For the rest, has fairly large kitchen, barbecue, TV antenna BOOM, DVD surround system for music is listening to the fullest!
If you give a search on google, and find online Ranca having located some webcams that transmit nonstop images of the trail, and not only and can inform about the weather, which is there, if it snowed or not, to know if you take snow chains, without them being very difficult to climb, the road is quite difficult to climb, with a slope of got a 45 degrees. May you take and saplings of trees that grow everywhere, like mushrooms, and you can plant at home, and taking one three I ever gonna see if i can come to me. I almost forgot the road is very good, I going to Tg-Carbunesti, Novaci – Ranca is not busy during that! And another thing very important to do your fuel tank as in the area are some stations, but you risk not find fuel, and must be done in glass, the other car, otherwise, many hi for lovers mountain, me being one of them.

I am looking forward to my retirement. Although I get closer to retirement every day, I still have

I am looking forward to my retirement. Although I get closer to retirement every day, I still have a little ways to go. Even though I like my job as a police officer and going to work every day, I would prefer not to have to work at all. I am extremely content with my current assignment in the detective bureau. But if I never saw a dead body again, I will be a happier person. When I go to work each day, I might see death and destruction in the morning, gangs and guns for lunch, and perverts and pedophiles by the time I leave at the end of my shift. A full day of crime. Retiring and having not to deal with police work, even though I love my job, to me will be a pleasant change.

I realize that I am very fortunate to have a safe and secure job in the economy. Knowing I will have a pension when I retire gives me piece of mind when planning for my financial future.

Different police agencies have different ways to calculate retirement pensions. Some have to work twenty years. Others pay into the pension system for twenty-five years. And still other have a formula for age at retirement and number of years worked. But all law enforcement agencies have a contractual percentage pay out for its retirees. We know what it is when we get hired or at least shortly thereafter. We may not know what the exact numbers, but we have a general idea. So worst case scenario, police officers have twenty or more years to plan for retirement.

So hypothetically speaking, when police officers are eligible to retire, they should be able to afford to retire. But there are some police officers that do not want to retire. And they won’t leave.

Retirements benefit budgets. They allow a higher income earner to retire and be replaced with a lower income earner. Also, a retiree who holds rank like Detective, Sergeant, Lieutenant, or Captain frees a spot for promotion and advancement. And new hires usually pay a higher percentage into the pension system.

Some would say that a senior police officer takes his knowledge and experience with him when he leaves. That is exactly the point. To leave. We can not work forever. Everyone is replaceable.

One of my bosses is a brilliant police officer. He has tremendous police instinct and is usually spot on. He is well respected by his peers and subordinates. He is fair and just. He has been a police officer for almost 40 years. He has trained and educated many other police officers along the way, including me. I have a tremendous amount for respect for him. But, it is time for him to retire and he has no desire to do so.

Others would say that if you are a 60ish police officer, why would you want to have to deal with 20ish street thugs. Trust me. I do not want to have to deal with them now and I am nowhere close to being 60ish. This is not discriminatory towards age, but rather an honest view of physical ability. I realize that there are always exceptions to the rules. One of my other 60ish bosses did retire and could still hold his own. He was in unbelievable shape better than most of the 20ish police officers I know. I feel that at 60ish, you have earned the right to retire and enjoy a new chapter in your life.

I do NOT understand why someone who is eligible to retire choses not to retire. Besides throwing away free money, I believe there is more to life than the jobs we work. I have hobbies, interests, and friends outside of my job. My job affords me a salary to be able to do all of the things in life I enjoy.

Please do not misunderstand. I do love my job. I am very good at what I do. But I would prefer not to have to do it at all. When you look at police pensions versus other salaries, it is easy to compare. A scientist can be a scientist until the day he dies. A accountant can always balance his spread sheet. A judge should get wiser with age. But eventually a police officer will become unfit to perform his duties.

A police officer will not always be able to police. So I plan on taking advantage of retirement.

A year ago, college students were ecstatic when thinking about the career prospects they could take advantage of due to the “silver wave” of retiring baby boomers. However, the last year may have changed whether this is still a reality:

Employees resigned to working beyond retirement age

The economic crisis will lead to a surge in the proportion of people who intend to work beyond the state retirement age of 65, according to a report by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD).

Some 71% of workers over 55 who replied to the Employee Outlook survey of 2,000 people said they planned to work beyond the state pension age, compared with 40% of respondents to a similar survey two years ago.

Financial issues are the main reason for the trend, with pension funds, savings, investments and house prices all being hit by the recession.

The findings have serious implications for employers, according to the CIPD’s reward adviser, Charles Cotton. “With more people planning to work past 65, employers will have to accommodate older workers and motivate those who wish they could be elsewhere.”

Workers over 55 were most likely to have accepted that they must work into old age, the survey found. By contrast 70% of 18-24-year-olds did not believe they would be working past 65, despite being the age group least likely to have a generous pension to fall back on.

Alarmingly, less than half of all employees (46%) said they had a pension with their current employer, with just 36% of private sector employees benefiting from an employer-organised retirement fund. “Employers need to review how they are helping their employees save for retirement to get value from their pension spend,” Cotton said.

Tom McPhail, head of pensions research at financial adviser Hargreaves Lansdown, said: “The reality is that most people simply cannot afford to retire.” He urged people to “save as much as you can, as soon as you can”.
