Angus Hyland at Pentagram has designed a new book about the making of the Fantastic Mr. Fox film.  The book investigates the process of bringing this film to life – including sketches, technical drawings, script notes, fabric samples, and behind the scenes images of the sets and puppets. 

Looks like a must have for all you design junkies out there.

Hacía tiempo ya que no escribía esta sección (1 año, nada más y nada menos),y ciertamente tenía ganas de retomarla, así que imagino que caerán unas cuantas actualizaciones de este estilo.

En el post que nos ocupa vamos a hablar de una banda turca injustamente poco conocida: Pentagram. También conocidos como Mezarkabul (es el nombre de la banda fuera de turquía, puesto que en Estados Unidos ya existía una banda con el mismo nombre), el estilo de la banda viene a ser una interesante fusión entre metal y  música tradicional turca.

Este es uno de los temas más conocidos de la banda, Anatolia… me recuerda mucho en los coros a la banda sonora de La profecía, de Jerry Goldsmith:

La banda ha sido una de las pioneras en introducir este género en Turquía, y ha publicado un total de 5 discos, de los cuáles tan sólo uno ha sido distribuído mundialmente. Personalmente destacaría Anatolia y Bir.

Asimismo, algunos de los miembros de la banda han trabajado un una gran cantidad de proyectos relacionados con otros estilos musicales, destancando de entre todos ellos la canción Everyway That I Can, compuesta por Demir Demirkan, vocalista y guitarrista del grupo, la cuál fue ganadora del festival de Eurovisión 2003.

Yo, sin duda, me quedo con sus composiciones para Pentagram, pero es cuanto menos curioso.

There has always been confusion over the meaning and interpretation of the pentagram, some people automatically assume that it relates to Satanism or devil worship, forgetting the fact that this ancient symbol has been around for millenia. This simple five-pointed star has quite a complex history where religion is concerned, but it is believed the origins of its use come from Babylonia where ancient astronomers  drew the shape based upon the way that the planet Venus travels across the sky.

Believed to embody magickal powers this symbol has since been adopted for use by Pagans, Wiccans, Ritual magicians and Freemasons. It has also been used on municipal seals as a magickal binding symbol.

The pentagram can be, and has been interpreted to mean whole host of things, from the placement of Christ’s wounds when on the cross to the proportions of the human body. Though these days it is generally considered a symbol of magickal protection, a sacred and binding knot.

Alchemy uses the symbol to represent the elements, Earth, Air, Fire and Water, overseen by divine light, which is practically the same as the Wiccan view of the symbol although the position occupied by ‘Divine Light’ in alchemical lore, becomes ‘Spirit’ in Wicca. Wiccans adopt the pentagram with its single point upwards to signify the triumph of spirit over all matter, (Although some initiationary practices involve an inverted pentagram) whereas those who follow a darker belief use the symbol with the single point facing downwards, symbolising earthly pleasures and hedonistic traits taking priority.

Once a pentagram is enclosed within a circle it becomes a pentacle. Which can be viewed as further symbolising protection be reinforcing the energies contained inside.

Had a really great meeting yesterday with Shannon Mattern, a media and film expert at the New School– too much to talk about now (gotta run to the library) so i’m just gonna post this awesome poster from the 1999 Architectural League of New York’s Beaux Arts Ball. Poster designed by Michael Bierut and Pentagram.

Mantenha tudo muito simples. Evite trabalhos que exijam muito tempo no seu desenvolvimento afinal, se você receber um trabalho pela manhã e não puder entregar no fim do dia, porque que você aceitou esse trabalho?
Não reinvente a roda. Quando Bierut recebeu o trabalho de criar o logo do restaurante The Oak Room, que já teve vários logos desde a sua abertura a mais de um século. Logo após conferir alguns desses logos antigos, Bierut resolveu redesenhar o logo original.
Não reinvente a roda mesmo, apenas troque os pneus de lugar. Use aquilo que o cliente tem, só dê uma melhorada. Aquilo que ele tem já é bom o suficiente, só precisa de uma pequena aprimorada.
Faça somente aquilo que te pedem. Siga todas as instruções do cliente e seu caminho para o sucesso estará definido.
Roube. Se sua idéia não está funcionando, seja direto e roube alguma idéia de alguém. Um exemplo disso é que a identidade visual de Guitar Hero, que ele desenvolveu para a Activision, veio do logo da banda Chicago.
Depois que você criar alguma coisa, nunca mais mude. Se sua idéia não está sendo aceita e nem está funcionando, insista até a morte. Nunca mude, você não precisa disso.
Faça outras pessoas fazerem o seu trabalho. Leve em consideração o trabalho que Bierut fez (ou não fez) para o Robin Hood Foundation, uma organização que ajuda a reconstruir bibliotecas em áreas pobres de Nova Iorque. Bierut resolveu convidar alguns designers e ilustradores para criar painéis e murais para as áreas superiores das prateleiras, levando assim todo o mérito.

For those of you that couldn’t make it to ADCNJ’s Rock Paper Scissors, you definitely missed out on great samples! Among the freebies of silly putty, tote bags, swatch books, sketch books, playing cards, flashlights, etc.. The best was a copy of Pentagram’s 2010 calendar, printed on Sappi paper. Kit Hinrichs designed this piece which features a different typeface every month, some info about the type designer, and what makes the particular typeface so special. The Fighting Illini 09-10 Basketball season tips off tonight against SIU-Edwardsville.  Coach Weber has four freshman to incorporate, three of which have already proven they will play (and Joseph Bertrand might be in that mix too if not for a knee injury), and his top three returning scorers in McCamey, Davis, and Tisdale.  Illinois has three more talented players coming in next year, and Weber deserves a lot of credit for his recent recruiting success.

But if the football team has taught us anything, it’s to be wary of the local hype surrounding the Illini.  Don’t get carried away with lofty prognostications.  That said, we’re optimistic about this year’s hoops team.  They will be fun to watch with young athletic players and depth on the bench.  The days of low-scoring milk-the-shotclock-and-hope offense should be behind us, and we won’t see many more games in the 40s and 50s (let alone that nightmare Penn State game in the 30s).

Last year’s team overachieved its way to a 24-10 record behind the grit of Chester Frazier and the scoring of the now-junior class.  So what do we see for this year?  Five points in the pentagram…

• Who will stop the other guy? I’ve listened to the two exhibition games and the postgame chat with Coach has included the same lament: who’s going to guard?  Last year you could put Frazier on any non-post player and he would hold them down, frustrate them, and give the Illini a chance.  It was part of the gameplan.  This year, young DJ Richardson show signs of the stopper mentality, but you can’t expect him to be your lockdown guy.  Mike and Mike are both theoretically a year older, stronger, and wiser, so they should be better post defenders.  They’d better be…  Coach has toyed with the idea of a zone but has publicly stated he sees it as “giving in to the guys”, which doesn’t seem that helpful.  If you need to play zone to steal some minutes and protect your best players, figure out a way to do that.  And a little full-court pressure would add a wrinkle and take advantage of the depth.  But thinking about matching up with Evan Turner, Robbie Hummel, and Kalin Lucas – not fun…
• Will we have a star this year? Weber’s teams have traditionally featured balanced scoring with about four guys averaging in low double-figures.  It’s a hallmark of his motion offense.  Will someone emerge this year as a primary threat?  The most likely candidates are Mike Davis and Demetri McCamey.  Davis could average 16-20 with a concerted effort to get him the ball and if he can grab a few more put-backs.  Judging from the exhibition games though, you wonder how the competition among the guards will affect his field goal attempts.  McCamey has the skills and talent to lead this team and dominate games – we’ve seen this since he was a freshman.  It might be best for the team if he averaged 15 a game but was the designated guy for tough shots and possessions.  From all the preseason news, it sounds like D-Mac has matured greatly and is ready to be that leader.
• Rotation expansion – Since the Final Four team, Coach has been reluctant to play more than seven guys in his rotation.  We criticized him on this last year (it’s one reason why the team always seems so worn down in late February), and we will really stick him on it this year if it happens.  Depth should be a strength of this team, and nine or ten guys should expect to play.  If the Illini go up-tempo, press, and play to offensive strengths, an expanded rotation is a must.  Who fills out that rotation might change and vary until January.
• Variation on offense – Another trend in recent years has been the stagnation of the vaunted motion offense late in the year.  I’ve complained about this often.  By the second pass in the Big 10, everyone knows where we like to pick and cut, and they shut us down.  The only time this hasn’t happened was when you had a true maestro in Deron Williams running the show.  So how does Weber rectify this?  Running some set plays, teaching the offense differently, changing his approach?  I’m really hoping we’ll see some signs of this.  You get really tired of hearing him lament, ‘they have to go cut and go screen someone’, as if his hands are tired.  Change your strategy, Coach, and don’t make excuses for the freshman.  You finally have guys who can dribble-drive and almost everyone can hit open jumpers.  If the offense bogs down late this year, it’s on the coaches.
• How to spell success? Last year’s Illini exceeded expectations in the win column, but pretty much did as expected in March (they lost four of their last five).  Coach did a great job getting 24 wins and finishing in the upper half of the conference.  This year the Big 10 is the toughest deepest conference in the nation – it’s as good as it’s been in a decade.  To finish in the upper half, maybe with a shot at the title in the last two weeks should be the goal.  To do that, you’ll need to hold service at home and steal a few road games.  Your conference champion could very well have as many as five or six losses.  So if the team avoids major injuries and other meltdowns, they should be shooting for a chance to win the Big 10 tournament and make the Sweet 16.  We also want to extend the streak over Mizzou, avoid any non-conference losses in Champaign, and show well against Gonzaga in Chicago.  Whatever happens, it should be fun to see some new variations on the themes of the past few years, and with more talent on the floor and more on the way next year, we’re really looking forward to it.

Herzelichen Guten Tag die Leserschaft.
Heute melde ich mich zurück um ein bisschen Freude in euren Alltag zu bringen. Richtig gehört, Freude, ich will euch nämlich den “besten Witz der Welt” vorstellen, auf den ich neulich gestoßen bin. Die Anführungszeichen sind durch die Subjektivität eines Witzes zu erklären. Der eine lacht sich tot, den andern juckts nicht, also bitte nicht enttäuscht sein, lachgarantie gibts nicht. Der Witz wurde übrigens durch eine Abstimmung im Magazin ,,Welt” ermittelt. Genug Geschwafel, hier ist er:

Ein Einwohner aus Stockholm fährt zur Entenjagd aufs Land. Als er eine Ente sieht, zielt er und schießt. Doch der Vogel fällt auf den Hof eines Bauern, und der rückt die Beute nicht heraus. „Das ist mein Vogel“, besteht der Städter auf seinem Recht. Der Bauer schlägt vor, den Streit, wie auf dem Land üblich, mit einem Tritt in den Unterleib beizulegen. „Wer weniger schreit, kriegt den Vogel.“ Der Städter ist einverstanden. Der Bauer holt aus und landet einen gewaltigen Tritt in den Weichteilen des Mannes. Der bricht zusammen und bleibt 20 Minuten am Boden liegen. Nun denn, auf einer Skala von 1 bis 10 würde er bei mir immerhin auf 8 landen, was sich auch dadurch erklären lässt, dass ich bei sowas nicht sehr wählerisch bin. Hoffe ich konnt euch wenigstens für ne knappe Minute unterhalten oder zumindest davon abhalten was blöderes zu tun.

Acropolis of Athens

Once, on the Acropolis of Athens ancient Greek used to play dices games. They used to play in the Parthenon, the great temple dedicated to the goddess Athena, protector of the city.

Ancient Greeks played Board games very similar to our checkers or chess, with game boards engraved on the floor.

The archaeologist Eleni Karakitsou reveals that during the work of restoration of the Parthenon  were found about 50 boards carved on the stairways and the floor, but they used to be certainly more.

The famous image of Achilles and Ajax playing dices under the walls of Troy, painted on many Greek vases, prove that dices games were ancient Greeks favourite pastime .

Ancient Greeks dices were called Astragals and were made of little animal bones with four sides.

It’s not a coincidence that ancient Greeks attributed the invention of dices and game to the Homeric hero Palamedes, who used to spent  in this way the idle days in Troy.
According to Sophocles, Palamedes invented the Tavli game, a board game similar to our backgammon which is still played in Greece today.

But we know that backgammon game boards are even older: there are finds from the third millennium BC in Mesopotamia and other even more older in Iran.

Another popular game in ancient Greece was the “Pentagram”,  derived from the five pointed star famous symbol (misrepresented in history and movies for years), improperly called “Pentacle” in the bestseller “Davinci Code”.  In ancient  Geece the Pentagram, found engraved on the Parthenon floor,  was a board game very similar to modern chess.

Many researchers doubt that the game boards on the Parthenon floor belong classic age, because was forbidden to play in the temples. Probably the game boards were engraved when the Parthenon was no longer a temple.

Unfortunately it is difficult if not impossible, to date the engravings. However the historian Plutarch says that in his time, (the first century AD) the floor of the Parthenon was still clean. But surely ancient Greeks were playing just outside the temple, on the hills, just like in the other ancient Hellenic  city-states. Archaeologists have found several game boards engraved on the stone in various places of Greece,  but unfortunately we know too little, because there is not a study or systematic collection and  probably many other games have been lost with the time.

But the certain thing is that even in the past,  ancients Greeks loved to spent their free time rolling the dices and playing board games.

Dicas valiosas de um dos líderes da Pentagram!

I recently had a church member ask me if the ear plugs (3/4″ for you piercing aficionados) that I wear were pentagrams… as they are a star inside a circle. I found this an interesting question, as it is loaded with implication… mostly down the road that pentagrams, or five pointed stars, are the representation of evil.

Let’s unpack that very briefly…

The meaning of multi-point stars have changed and been adopted/re-adopted over the years by many religions and sects. It is an interesting study. However, five (5) pointed stars have been predominantly a Christian symbol until the last 100 years or so. Modern fundamentalists would view the pentagram as evil, although, only when used upside down would the meaning actually ever be considered counter to Christian teachings (with the “top point” symbolizing Spirit at the bottom instead of the top, thus subverted). But… alas, my ear plugs are not pentagrams. They are eight (8) pointed stars. I think they have a very profound meaning… see for yourself here:

So, the lesson I would hope we can all learn from this is that most symbols have much deeper meanings than those we have been taught to automatically assume. Symbols litter our churches, logos, and even our choices of body piercings and tattoos… and litter they will stay until we dig deeper to explore the rich artistic and tradition-laden meaning behind these simple relics.

I saw some of this year’s Most Haunted Live – not much different to previous years! I wrote this in the last days of my involvement with the old MH forum, and stumbling across it tonight I thought it might amuse, even though it is two years out of date now, I still stand by what I said then!

“I watched Most Haunted Live last night, and I found the experience extremely painful, excruciating actually. Now before people tell me to ‘get lost if you don’t like the show, you don’t have to watch’, I’ve actually been involved for quite a while with the whole Most Haunted scene – I worked briefly for HanrahanMedia, and ANTIX as a researcher, have appeared on the show as an “expert”, and then worked on a related contract with the LivingShop people, and have been involved in parapsychology and ghost investigation for twenty years now.  Some of the older posters on this forum will know who I am. I’m not a nay sayer – I usually am supportive, and like many of the people involved and regard some as good friends.

This time however I was really depressed by it all.  Firstly, there is this whole pentagram business. (Note: they were doing 5 nights, in 5 locations to form a huge pentagram across England) Now I’ll declare my prejudices – an ex-pagan who practiced ritual magick I’ve been a Church of England Christian for over a decade. I’ve already joked about the pentagram thing, but really, while not offended on a religious level, this is just silliness.  Inscribe an inverted pentagram all over England and pretend that something bad might happen? Wow!  Hammer House of Haunted!

Now look, let’s get this straight. The pentagram has a long history as a symbol, used by occultists, Christians, Jews, ancient cultures – drawn all over their text books by me as a kid – and in itself its a pretty star.   With two horns exalted (upside down) it’s generally these days associated with teenage pimply heavy metal occult wannabes, pagans with wonky jewelery, and Satanism.  So are Yvette and company actually advocating Satanism?  Of course they aren’t – so why indulge in this amateur dramatics black magic crap?  Are we going to have virgin sacrifices and inverted crosses next?

Now it’s ‘just entertainment’, I know that and you know that.  That’s what hurts though – Karl and Yvette were completely sincere when they started out, and for a while the show was moving towards sound research.  It was good TV.  Now it has degenerated in to cheap schlock horror occult cliches.  Worse than that, it’s become stupid. Why?

Because…

1. if you believe in this stuff, and real evil powers, and after purportedly being attacked by a demon in Edinburgh Vaults they should have every reason to, why on earth would you mess around with these things?

or

2. they don’t believe in any of it, and it’s strictly for colour, in which case why mess around with these things?

Now I don’t actually think that we are all going to be eaten by the Staypuft Marshmallow man on Halloween. If they had real style the last night would be a complete fake, misleading the viewers, a scripted drama a la Orson Welles War of the Worlds, and would apparently end with the casts messy demise and demon’s pouring out of the studio.   Be hilarious, would go down in history, and end the show with a bang not a whimper. If you wanna go entertainment, that’s got to be the way to finish your amazingly successful run of series – and MH has been amazingly successful.  I’d laugh, the regulators would slap Living’s wrists and for a while we would all be spooked and freaked – but it would be a great end to Most Haunted.

Now all this occult crap – and I’m sorry the line “David went with Karl and Stuart but they failed to use protection” still has tears running in my eyes with laughter, maybe you are all too young to recall  the safe sex ads of the 1980’s? – anyway we now have spells.  What was Yvette shouting? Malleus Decorum?  That’s what it sounded like – Hammer Behaviour? Perhaps she was invoking the spirit of MC Hammer? I’m guessing I misheard and she was shouting Malleus Maleficarium – The Hammer of the Witches, Spengler and Kramer not Kramer versus Kramer, but a 14th century I think manual. “Whatever is done for the security of the state is merciful.”  I dunno if a 17th century witch would know the implied threat though? It’s a book title guys, not a spell!

And what was this crap about witch trials often being suppressed, and covered up?  I have never heard the claim before. It seemed a bit disingenuous to not mention the lady hanged in the State Records for 1684 and referenced in the episode was in fact hanged in Exeter as well – nowhere near Lancashire. Still that I can put up with. This whole “let’s play at being black magicians” and whitter on about “dark stuff” and ‘the Goat of Mendes’ – and do any of them know the origin of that phrase? (I mean the Egyptian one not Eliphas Levi). That practice would be worth seeing on TV, and definitely be the end of the show!

Now I’ve long pointed out the dangers of inviting spirits if you actually believe in them to use your energy,etc, etc, if you can’t tell what they are. When said spirits start going on about seriously dark stuff, surely the time has come to back out?  Yet nope, they charge on, insulting, cajoling and demanding. That says to me you either don’t believe any of  it –or are just plain daft. Draw your own conclusions.

So do I think it’s dangerous? Well it’s their souls not mine. A lot of people care passionately about the team, and probably are tearing their hair out in worry. I’m fairly relaxed, but it was not pleasant viewing,and I am nervous for them. I’m figuring at the end of the day its no more “real occult” than an Ozzy Ozbourne concert – one almost expected “Bark at the Moon” to start playing – but I have another reservation.

Ten years ago there were less than fifty ghost groups in the uK. Today there are I think over 600. Most Haunted is remarkably influential. The general public had I thought moved beyond a perception of parapsychology and ghost investigation which had overtones of John Constantine, Hellblazer. I know of six people who really know the occult, and happen to be ghost investigators, and four of them post on this forum – there may be more – and two of them (I’m counting myself) are Anglicans these days.  Yet this is in no way representative of psychical research, and all this inverted pentagram silliness might be seen as bringing the whole thing in to utter disrepute.

Oh well – Most Haunted, still a great show I guess, nice people -  but dark powers, penatgrams and all this beastliness? Knock it off! It’s not big and it’s not clever. It’s Wayne’s World meets the Exorcist.

It’s been a busy year for Allison Mosshart, Jack White and company. After a relentless tour over the summer in the US, their debut album, Horehound, releasing in July and their European tour still ongoing, you’d think The Dead Weather already have their hands full. But even after announcing that they’d be going back to the studio sometime towards the end of the year, the band has released another EP with no fanfare outside of the blogosphere, Live At Third Records West.

The EP is essentially a five-track release with four of the tracks being accompanied with a video release. The main standout on the album is the band’s cover of Pentagram’s “Forever My Queen” which first premiered at the band’s live performance on From the Basement. The rest are live performances of songs off of Horehound.
