Au 2/3 du jardin de l’Aspre, ce matin comme tous les autres, l’abri de jardin me nargue!
Sur un petit talus, érigé, il sépare le jardin en deux, devant jardin de proximité autour de la maison, derrière, le far west comme on l’appelle parfois, toujours ensauvagé , qui se structure lentement autour entre autre, des  vergers, l’ancien qui s’éteint, le nouveau qui démarre!

J’y ai ouvert hier le premier chantier officiel, la mise en configuration définitive et réfléchie d’une des parcelles du jardin, qui restera ainsi aussi longtemps que je pourrai m’en occuper ou au moins vous en parler, surtout en ce qui concerne sa structure de base, arbres et arbustes, vivaces durables aussi!
Vu l’âge que j’avais lors de mon arrivée , il m’a fallu planter le plus rapidement possible tous les arbres du jardin, ne pas fignoler, aller droit à l’essentiel, la survie des piliers du jardin. j’ai aussi implanté tout de suite le plus gros des haies, nous avons une énorme longueur de clôtures à gérer!
Maintenant, il est grand temps d’aboutir chaque lieu, de le fignoler, de l’entretenir ensuite et aussi d’en profiter!
La pente qui permet l’accès direct à l’avant de l’abri reste difficile à gérer puisque peu propice à un arrosage soigné, elle est situé aussi en pleine Tramontane et y travailler toute une demi journée comme je viens de le faire relève du défi.

La pente s’achevait jusqu’à peu sur un petit alignement de fusains panachés, je ne dis pas haie puisque bardés de cochenilles, ils restaient chétifs quoi que je fasse. 
 Ils furent vite arrachés par celui des jardiniers dont la force et la jeunesse , m’est presque pierre d’achoppement. Ai-je vraiment été ainsi un jour? Il ya déjà si longtemps…

Restait à retravailler soigneusement la terre, à éliminer pierres, miettes de gravats, racines et surtout feuilles infestées avant que de replanter quoi que ce soit!
Il fallait aussi continuer le désherbage, commencé il y a une semaine, il n’est pas encore achevé et déjà quatre d’entre nous ensemble ou séparement s’y sont mis! ça commence à se voir. Quelques années plus tôt, la pente était totalement couverte d’avoines folles qu’il me plaisait de voir divaguer dans le vent printanier.

Le cerisier Montmorency pleureur laisse aller ses dernières feuilles, la cordyline s’apprète à affronter l’hiver, une petite rocaille de delosperma rose montre ses dessous bruns, une taille drastique s’avérait indispensable, j’espère qu’elle repartira bien!
Le pilier, son rosier liane, ses chèvrefeuilles, son lierre, sont encore à tailler. A son pied, je viens de rabattre sauvagement l’euryops glauque tout étiolé par sa lutte contre la chaleur et la sécheresse.
Au creux de la pente, j’espère arriver à planter un petit pistachier mais ce sera pour dans quelques jours…le reste du jardin est à gérer aussi!
Hier, il m’a fallut plusieurs heures pour planter convenablement ce qui sera, avec un peu de chance, une petite haie de photinias nains , j’en ai rectifié la courbe  pour dégager au maximum le chemin , toujours trop étroit au gré du créateur du jatrdin de l’Aspres!

J’ai arrosé les huit photinias péniblement mis en terre, avec de l’insecticide systémique, ce n’est guère dans mes habitudes mais avec les cochenilles pas de faiblesses permises! Les photinias n’y sont pas sensibles, le dosage de l’insecticide raisonné, pas de risque pour les butineurs puisque pas de fleurs pour l’instant, ni jamais puisqu’ils seront taillés sans cesse, façon buis!
Bien à l’abri derrière cette petite haie, qui masquera au départ, leur feuillage inesthétique l’hiver, quelques hémérocalles sont déjà en place; chaque printemps me verra en ajouter de nouvelles pour une belle collection; un jour, si le temps m’en est permis!
Baptème de la pente du pistachier prévu mais je ne saurai vous dire quand, il y a encore beaucoup à faire, là et ailleurs!!

As a boy I loved playing games. Many happy hours were spent playing with my sisters, parents, cousins and friends. We played cards, monopoly, scrabble and chess. I have no doubt that playing these games helping me with literacy and numeracy, as well as social skills. Because of this I have no hesitation in using games in the classroom to motivate, reinforce and build teacher-student relationships.

In line with this pedagogy is MariaD’s Blog article “60 ways to make math activities inclusive“. Number 15 is:

“Play games. Recreational mathematics has something to offer for everyone, because play is an innate quality of the human animal”.

I use some very simple games that only use dice or playing cards. I will post about them in future. But first a commercial board game that my students and I love: “Pente”.

This is a great game that is very quick to learn. The goal – get 5 in a row, or capture 10 of your opponents pieces. This is an example of a multiple entry, multiple exit activity. After playing against a student or observing students at play, I can easily tell what logical thought processes are happening.

I often use this game at the end of a lesson as a work reward. If a student can defeat me I prepare a glossy certificate for them.

The board game Pente celebrates its 30th anniversary this year.  Gary Gabrel is credited with the creation of the game in 1978.  At the time, he was working as a dishwasher in a pizzeria in Stillwater, Oklahoma.

The game itself is easy to learn.  Players take turns placing stones on a 19×19 grid.  You win by placing 5 stones in row before your opponent does, or by capturing 5 pairs of your opponent’s stones.  (‘Pente’ is the number 5 in Greek).

I bought my Pente set in 1981, and I’ve been casual player ever since.  Sometime in the early 90’s, I started playing 3-4 times a month with my friend Malcolm during lunch, usually at Wang’s Teriyaki to Go in Livermore. It is a tradition that we continue to this day.  The simplicity of the game still allows for normal lunchtime talk.

Are we any good?  It’s hard to say.   Playing the same opponent for 16 years has tended to stunt our growth as Pente players.  On the other hand, our willingness to experiment with strategies has kept the game fairly fresh, even after all this time.

Strategy-wise, a beginning Pente player needs to know two 2 very basic but very important concepts.

First, if your opponent has a row of 3 stones that is open at both ends (a structure known as a tria), you must either block or disrupt the tria on your next move.

Second, it is usually a bad idea to build structures of only 2 adjacent stones, since such structures are easily captured.

My nine year old daughter Kayden has recently taken an interest in the game.  Most of the time, I will play my A-game, and then just before I have the game won, we will switch colors.  Sometimes we switch more than once in a single game.  The arrangement keeps us both involved and playing our best throughout the entire match.  She actually beat me once, straight up, with no color switching.   I offer no alibi.  Paulano has a smart kid.

Does Pente have the same entertainment value of computer games offered by companies like Nintendo, Electronic Arts, XBox and Wii. I can’t say, since they don’t appeal to me.  But if you want to unplug for a while, and try something new that’s old, I recommend giving Pente a try.
