You know… When we’re young, we’re taught not to lie. Even once we’re older

You know… When we’re young, we’re taught not to lie. Even once we’re older – we’re still told, “Tell the truth.” (I personally try to live by that)

But somewhere along the way “White Lies” and “Little Lies” get introduced into our vocabulary, and we’re told those are alright.

White Lie

Noun: A harmless or trivial lie, esp. one told to avoid hurting someone’s feelings.

Suddenly Lies just become a regular part of living. You lie a little – and you know other people will do the same. You run into different types of little lies too.

There’s the “Hey – how ya’ doin? I’m fine *when everything really sucks*” type of lies.

The common “Withholding the WHOLE truth kind of lie.”

And let’s not forget the classic, “I didn’t want to hurt YOUR feelings kind of lie” when we (notice I said “we” not attacking anyone here) have wanted to hide from honest feelings or actions in the past.

And I get it. Everyone doesn’t deserve “the Truth” as we like to call it. Strangers – coworkers… you don’t owe them anything. Right? Well, to me iIt all sucks when you start to think that no one can be real with you anymore and vice versa. It sucks even more when you question if you can be real or not yourself…

However lies are so engrained in our Culture that I wouldn’t dare think this post could remove all of them from the world or even an individual. Sheesh – I don’t even think this blog in itself could pull that off. So rather than try and tell you how to live your Life, I’ll just offer up some comments on some folks you should always be straight with.

Seriously — In a world full of little “white lies” – some people should always see your true-blue self.

No matter what it is that’s bugging you, when these people ask stuff – tell them the truth (so help you God)…

“THAT” Friend

We’ve all got that one friend who’s been with us through everything (and I mean everything) in out Life. The ups and downs – you know, the real mess of it all. When this person is trying to see how you’re doing, be straight with them because they really care – and are honestly probably closer to you (relationship-wise anyway) than a lot of your family members.

Your Parents

But notice that I didn’t say “all” of your family members. Unless your Parents are the worst of the worst when it comes to people, you shouldn’t hold back from them because they were the first people to ever love you unconditionally. You’ll never be able to repay them for everything they’ve done for you (again – assuming they were good parents), but you can at least give them peace of mind and let them know how you’re honestly doing.

Significant Others

I’m not a married man, so maybe their are just some things I don’t understand about this dynamic yet – but “if you can’t be honest with the person you date/ sleep with/ share a home or (kids with), who can you trust? Plus it seems like in romantic relationships – the truths you withhold just eventually lead to arguments…

Full-Disclosure Professionals

(e.g. Catholic Priests, Doctors, Lawyers, etc.)

Lastly – be straight-up with folks who have your bodily and spiritual interests in mind — especially if they’re under oath to not reveal things to everyone else (that’s a big deal for most). If you’re Catholic – that priest is trying to save your soul. If you have a physical ailment, and your doctor asks “How have you been feeling?” – don’t answer “Fine Doc” – tell him/her the truth! Lawyers keep yous a$$ out of jail (unless they’re after you) – so by all means, tell them what really went down.

And that’s all I have.

Don’t lie to these people. If you have to tell a “white lie” to anyone, just try and keep these folks off of that list.

Who else do you think you should definitely NEVER tell a lie to? What type of “little lies” do you tell? Why do you think people are ok with, and sometimes encourage, “little white lies”? Tell me your thoughts on this one in the Comment Section below folks.

Peace and thanks for reading.
