I just recently return from my vacation. It’s a secret where I been!

While NBC served up the Eagles and Bears  Sunday night, ABC had on the American Music Awards at the same time.  It’s called counter-programming.

I had my manly man eyes on the football game, while Mmes. Keisha Grant and P.J. DeCordova-Boyd, our crack production assistant, were checking out the music.  Or what the musicians were wearing.  Or in the case of several women, not wearing.

Kate Hudson. Really?

The cue to look up at the monitor was every time I heard “What is she thinking?” coming from Keisha and P.J.

Kate Hudson (presenter) comes immediately to mind.

Fergie. Really!

When the Black Eyed Peas came on, the sound was turned up, and for good reason.  They’re good.  Especially Fergie.  She’s gooooood. They were singing their current hit “Meet Me Halfway,” when I mentioned to Keisha and P.J. that I had recently bought the song on iTunes.

“You did?” [Incredulous looks on faces.]

“Yup, and it’s on heavy rotation (radio term) on my iPod.” [Look of smug pleasure I'm very good at.]

“You are one hip dude.” [Smiles all around.]

Made my night.

When I saw this on Dr. Phil last week, I really have to say, it made me chuckle. Rudeness really does tend to be a personal thing and everyone thinks different things are rude. They had camera’s going on the audience as they came in and sat down and one whole section was late. They all came in up to 15 minutes later than what the time stamped on the tickets said. Of course they all had good reasons for being late ranging from being caught in traffic to “I’m always late, it’s who I am and people know that about me.” Then they recorded everyone answering cell phone calls, texting and taking pictures even though there were strict warnings about turning your cell phones off when entering the studio. It was kind of funny that when people were talking about themselves, it was “different” or “justified.”

When asking the audience what was rude to them, here are some of the things they said. Being late and people talking on their cell phones and making everyone around them listen were two right on top. Then there was touching a pregnant woman’s stomach. Sarcasm to a waitress as to why food is late. Saying “what’s the matter, your feet broken?” People getting checked out of a grocery store, food on the belt and they leave the line to get “one more thing” and make everyone in line wait. People who interrupt others. The rudeness about driving was so full I can’t even get into it but I’m sure you can imagine. Everything from not signaling turns to cutting people off.

It got me to thinking about the things we do that may be considered rude that we don’t even think about. I had to think to myself that I’m bad at interrupting people. I do it quite a lot actually. I just get really excited about something and think if I don’t blurt it out, I’ll forget about it and not tell that person. But that really shouldn’t be an excuse because when you get right down to it, it’s rude.

The last film I show related to India some weeks ago, was the “Slumdog Millionaire” but this is not a Bollywood film …  It is very interesting to see a big culture going directly from an ancient mentality to the technological and media dominated age of our days. It is very useful for many people from India all the way till Europe to realize this. Among them: the Greeks.

The Sunday music sessions at the Fremantle Art Centre are becoming more and more popular, and that is no surprise when one listens to the high quality performers. The Holy C yesterday attracted a large audience, who thoroughly enjoyed themselves, and many of them were not from Fremantle.

I shared three tables with an eclectic group of French, Dutch, Irish, Italian and Australian people, most of whom had come from the far northern suburbs and are already planning another catch-up in the courtyard soon. There were babies galore as well, with one mum delighting us with triplets; two gorgeous boys and a girl.

       We’ve been to the historical town of Weston, Missouri before, and as all small quaint towns go, the people are extremely friendly.  They have antique stores like every 50 feet here. lol.  Today, we browsed one and I was so happy to have found more doll home furniture fodder for a reasonable price.   Well, we also met a victorian Santa, ate at Charlemane’s restaurant which is a german style buffet (on Sundays) I thought it was so funny how Doug kept saying over and over that he didn’t wanna eat in town, but as soon as we hit the door of the place and that home cooking smell met him, he got his grub on.  2 plates full, plus dessert.  enjoy the pictures.

Giving tips either in cash or goods has been a trend in the world of business and Second Life is not an exception to it.  Tipping is an expression of acknowledgment for a job well done.  It is thought to be reasonable for owners of publicly accessible sims and clubs to ask the users for voluntary donations and  tips that is used to defray some or all of the cost of running the business.

The most notable areas of monetary exchange in SL are heavy transactions in ‘virtual estate’, virtual sex industry and music performances.   Ever since the inception of SL, its economic effects have been controversial.  It has been a constant dilemma of how to view the in-world money transactions.  Should the virtual money be taxable or not?  Governments, economists and  ordinary players all have mulled over this matter.

Some argue that as long as virtual activity stays within the virtual economy, it shouldn’t be taxable.  However, the linden dollars have now been spilled in the real life (Reference 1, Reference 2) and money can be freely exchanged between real life and Second Life.  With this development, there is the looming possibility of money laundering by unscrupulous people including funding of terrorist groups.

In fact, the Swedish Taxation Agency Skatterverket has seemingly declared that any virtual transaction of money in the game is taxable.  The US Internal Revenue Services (IRS) has also been keeping a close eye on the Linden dollars to enforce taxation.  Skatterverket wants to tax in-world transactions and expects the users to send invoices for any transaction.  But this approach may not be reasonable since one of the basic premise of SL game is the anonymity of the users.  The users don’t know who they’re interacting with.

Arguably, in SL, the largest transactions of money are through tipping in numerous virtual sex businesses and music clubs.  SL residents are particularly drawn to the music clubs to experience a social interaction while DJs or live performers playing their favorite music.  Tipping the DJs, live performers and the hosting clubs and sims is an accepted practice that in some cases is essential for keeping these clubs viable.  These seemingly innocuous gestures of donation and receipt of Linden dollars may have deeper economic repercussions.

Recently, a new trend has been noticed in SL.  Tip a little too much and someone from the Linden clan will chase you, audit you, and make sure that you are not evading taxes or laundering money for a drug cartel.  This brings us to the question whether large amounts of money can be laundered in Second Life?  It seems that using multiple alt accounts and bots, it may be possible to launder petty cash of a few hundred dollars without being tracked by the authorities (Reference 3).  But laundering any larger amount of money will be almost impossible without raising a red flag in Linden Lab’s exchange department.  A bitterly true account of Linden economy is presented at Reference 4.

Coming back to the taxation of the tips and donations, in real life, the IRS calculates an average percentage based on actual credit card tips the server or restaurant earns and applies that number to cash transactions.  Can this model be adapted to SL?  Theoretically, it is possible to track these donations that are channeled through the tip-jars.

The omnipresent tip-jar at the public sims and clubs can be quite a complex device.  The tip-jar is not just a receptacle of the tips and donations dropped in it.  These tip-jars come in a variety of fancy shape, sizes and decorations including the personalized ones with the pictures and themes.  The facade of these tip-jars may hold a complex calculator that faithfully apportions the obtained tips into the accounts of the hierarchical management system.  A number of these tip-jars have been designed by astute builders who have put innovative scripts that distribute the tip to the performer, establishment and the sim owner.  Sophisticated tip-jars may subtly create competition among donors and recipients alike.  For example, a tip-jar may display the biggest donor at a venue making other generous donors to up that amount.  A tip-jar may also display the most tipped employee at a location to generate ‘healthy competition’ which invariably may help the owner of the establishment.  In addition, these tip-jars can hold or relay the entire transaction of the event or the day to a web-based server or to your email account for record-keeping.

In any case, it is not clear why suddenly Linden Lab has been tracking people for their monetary transactions in SL.  There are several theories about Linden Lab’s apparently whimsical actions of suspending SL residents from the game.  I have attempted to contact the Managing Director of Marketing (Linden Lab) through email, but Linden Lab server has refused to receive my email. Until we hear from them, it remains an unsolved mystery!

When an employee in any organization is not able to speak and express his ideas, the problems he notices will never be fixed, and might be ignored by the management team, having as consequence that these problems become a bigger threat to the employees in the organization.

 Managers need to let know their employees that there won’t be negative consequences when complaining about any problems, at the same time it is necessary to let them know that any feedback they put on the table will be considered and that it will be left forgotten by the management team, this way you will encourage your employees to tell you the problems they perceive and will be willing to give their proposed solutions. The more proposals you have the easier will be to get to a better solution.

 The more you keep your employees quiet the bigger the problems will be. Communication channels are fundamental in any organization, managers need to be willing to receive any type of feedback, negative or positive, and be able to process it in a constructive way, that will allow a grow in the trust among employees.

 Managers also need to let know their employees that they want to hear from them, that they want to hear their concerns and what solutions they propose; this will allow the employees feel in control, and at the same time will create a better work atmosphere.

This blog is a step away from my usual ‘journalistic’ style of writing. While I will always think of myself as a journalist, I have yearned try my hand at writing about what really interests me – people.

I love the ‘real life’ and sometimes journalism and the media – with its fast and competitive pace – doesn’t always allow us writers to get to the true story, the human element. This will be about the people I meet everyday, old friends, new friends, family and simply strangers on the street. Who they are and how they influence me.

You may read a number of lists that come around roughly the same time of every year – 2009’s ‘Most influential people’ or ‘2009’s most successful people’ ‘most beautiful people’

These people are often celebrities or billionaires. How to they influence my next-door neighbour, my grandmother or the man who runs the corner shop?

There is inspiration in real life too. In real people. The person sitting next to you on the tram, your colleague or person trying to get you to donate money to charity on your way home.
