(Global Footprint Network) One the eve of the Copenhagen climate conference, Global Footprint Networ

(Global Footprint Network) One the eve of the Copenhagen climate conference, Global Footprint Network is releasing data today that reveals a widening gap between human demand on ecological services and what nature is able to produce. It would now take nearly one and a half Earths to generate all the resources humanity consumes and absorb all our CO2 emissions, according to the latest Ecological Footprint and biocapacity calculations. These figures are based upon source data from 2006, the most recent year for which such data are available.

The data show that humanity’s demand on the biosphere for providing natural resources and absorbing carbon dioxide emissions is nearly 50 percent greater than what nature can provide. This ecological overshoot means it now takes approximately 18 months for the Earth to regenerate what we use in one year. The urgent threats we are facing today – most notably climate change, but also biodiversity loss, shrinking forests, declining fisheries and freshwater stress – are symptoms of this trend.

“The future will be shaped by these resource limitations, so, it’s clearly in the self-interest of every country to transition quickly from carbon and resource-intensive economies to the economies of the future.” Global Footprint Network President Mathis Wackernagel said. “While international agreements are critical, many nations are not taking a ‘wait-and-see’ approach, rather they are investing now to take advantage of the world’s demand for renewable energy and clean technology.

Who Uses What

Every year, Global Footprint Network calculates the Ecological Footprint of the world’s nations and humanity as a whole, and compares that with biocapacity, the amount of resources nature is able to produce.

The data show that in 2006, the most recent year for which data are available, humanity’s Ecological Footprint grew almost 2 percent from the year before, and 22 percent from a decade before, due to both rising population and per capita consumption. At the same time, biocapacity has not increased, and may even have fallen slightly.

The average Ecological Footprint per person worldwide is 2.6 global hectares (6.5 global acres), while the average biocapacity available per person is 1.8 global hectares (4.5 global acres.) But some countries’ level of ecological demand per person is much higher than world average, and some is much lower.

The United Arab Emirates has the highest Ecological Footprint per capita, 10.3 global hectares (26 global acres). The Emirates adopted a national Ecological Footprint Initiative in 2007 and has been working to reduce its Footprint. Along with investing billions in renewable energy and other sustainability initiatives, UAE researchers and government agencies are working with Global Footprint Network to identify policies that could significantly cut the country’s per capita Footprint.

The average American has an Ecological Footprint of 9.0 global hectares (23 acres) – the size of 17½ American football fields. The average European has a Footprint of 4.5 global hectares, half that of the average American, but still well above both the world average and what is available per person.

On the other end of the scale are Malawi, Haiti, Nepal, and Bangladesh, with Footprints of about half a global hectare (1.25 acres), in most cases too small to provide for basic food, shelter and sanitation.

Click here for a bar graph of Ecological Footprints by Nation

Population is another critical factor driving overshoot. The productivity of our ecosystems has not kept pace with increases in population. The result is that as our numbers expand, the amount of biocapacity available per person shrinks.

The U.S. now requires 23 percent of world biocapacity, while China – which has a much lower per capita Footprint but over four times greater total population – requires 21 percent. Together, China and the U.S. require almost half of all human demand on nature’s services. China’s resource use is rising at a much faster rate due to population growth, suggesting it will soon surpass the U.S. in total consumption, although the U.S. remains much higher per person.

Methodology

The 2009 Account calculations are the most detailed ever performed, using about 6,000 data points from U.N. statistics per country per year. This year’s edition has limited the number of published countries to those that have robust data sets. To produce results for the remaining countries, Global Footprint Network welcomes additional research with those countries’ statistical offices to produce meaningful, consistent data sets. Such collaborations are already underway with a number of countries (www.footprintnetwork.org/reviews).

Changing the Curve

Despite these sobering findings, there are key opportunities to change our trajectory. “Even as world leaders have acknowledged that an agreement at Copenhagen is out of reach, governments we work with from Ecuador to the United Arab Emirates are seeing the importance of taking bold unilateral action.”

“Once city, country and business leaders realize that the best way to remain competitive and prepared for the future is to make the policy decisions and drive the technological innovations we need to live within nature’s means, we will begin to change these trends,” Wackernagel said. “The good news is that, many governments we work with are moving forward to reduce their Ecological Footprint, no matter what happens next month in Copenhagen. These leaders realize the longer they wait, the greater the risks to their economies and their citizen’s well-being.

Today, I suddenly had this realization. I had been listening to Jessica of Jessicamystic.com and I had been listening to an interview of her. Suddenly afterwards, I realized that I have always liked growing flowers. And I allowed myself to value this dream instead of pushing it away as unvaluable or uninteresting or no way to make money at it. Unless I wanted to become a florist or huge flower farm trade. Even though, an organic flower farm, one of the first of it’s kind in the U.S. was near me. I felt that because it was just growing flowers, there was no place to fit it into the system. Now I realize I let the view of the system , the status quo define my dreams. Flowers I learned somewhere randomly, in nature, it turns out, contribute high levels of oxygen for the air for us to breathe. Not just trees, flowers. Wildflowers in meadows specifically as I recall. As a child I used to dance in front of flowers. I absolutely loved them.

Well, today, I remembered my love of flowers. And I suddenly realized, why did I push that down? I am allowing now this to flow back to me and see what comes of it. Meaning, giving it room to manifest.

And then I fell on a kind of synchronicity if you will, I found a site that had these dome shape buildings that Native Americans, Hidatsa used to have along the Missouri river. A dam misplaced all the peoples there. I saw the very village I have longed to build. I was shocked to see it. Right there, allready done once. Another thing I’d like to do. Rebuild that village. Create a village of domes that attracts skilled trades and artisans alike. I’d really like to do it…….grocer/organic, bakers, clothes makers, oh so many things, like a village that is self sustaining. Like an eco village somewhat.

Anyway, these things came to me today. Affirming things for me.

Hello Poptropican Peoples,

So, today we have yet another new Creators’ blog post, the third day in a row of them. This post is called “New Store Stuff!” Quite an original name.

“We are crazy busy working on some really awesome Poptropica islands, but we found time to add two more outfits to the Poptropica Store…the Tiger Shark and Swan Ballerina!“

SHARK BOY

If you noticed, Shark Boy changed his avatar for this post. You may see that he’s still the same on all the others, so it’s not permanent or anything.

Anyway, this means that you can spend money on a tiger shark and swan ballerina (whatever that is) costume. I think the tiger shark costume looks pretty cool, although that’s probably just because it’s orange, and I like orange.

This post also leaves a few hints about other stuff. Shark Boy mentions how the team is “crazy busy working on some really awesome Poptropica islands”. Yeah, that’s right, islands. Island in the plural form. Multiple islands. ISLANDS! This means that the creators are working on more than one island right now. We know that Counterfeit is one, but what’s the other? Was Reality TV Island not abandoned at all? Are there other islands that they’re working on that we haven’t heard of yet? This is probably the first time that an update to Poptropica costumes got me excited! Reality TV might still be… ALIVE!!!

I thank you, Mr. Shark Boy, for making my day.

(Cormac Cullinan) It was the sudden rush of the goats’ bodies against the side of the boma that woke

(Cormac Cullinan) It was the sudden rush of the goats’ bodies against the side of the boma that woke him. Picking up a spear and stick, the Kenyan farmer slipped out into the warm night and crept toward the pen. All he could see was the spotted, sloping hindquarters of the animal trying to force itself between the poles to get at the goats—but it was enough. He drove his spear deep into the hyena.

The elders who gathered under the meeting tree to deliberate on the matter were clearly unhappy with the farmer’s explanation. A man appointed by the traditional court to represent the interests of the hyena had testified that his careful examination of the body had revealed that the deceased was a female who was still suckling pups. He argued that given the prevailing drought and the hyena’s need to nourish her young, her behavior in attempting to scavenge food from human settlements was reasonable and that it was wrong to have killed her. The elders then cross-examined the farmer carefully. Did he appreciate, they asked, that such killings were contrary to customary law? Had he considered the hyena’s situation and whether or not she had caused harm? Could he not have simply driven her away? Eventually the elders ordered the man’s clan to pay compensation for the harm done by driving more than one hundred of their goats (a fortune in that community) into the bush, where they could be eaten by the hyenas and other wild carnivores.

The story, told to me by a Kenyan friend, illustrates African customary law’s concern with restorative justice rather than retribution. Wrongdoing is seen as a symptom of a breakdown in relationships within the wider community, and the elders seek to restore the damaged relationship rather than focusing on identifying and punishing the wrongdoer.

The verdict of a traditional African court regarding hyenacide may seem of mere anthropological interest to contemporary Americans. In most of today’s legal systems, decisions that harm ecological communities have to be challenged primarily on the basis of whether or not the correct procedures have been followed. Yet consider how much greater the prospects of survival would be for most of life on Earth if mechanisms existed for imposing collective responsibility and liability on human communities and for restoring damaged relations with the larger natural community. Imagine if we had elders with a deep understanding of the lore of the wild who spoke for the Earth as well as for humans. If we did, how might they order us to compensate for, say, the anticipated destruction of the entire Arctic ecosystem because of global climate change, to restore relations with the polar bears and other people and creatures who depend on that ecosystem? How many polluting power plants and vehicles would it be fair to sacrifice to make amends?

“So what would a radically different law-driven consciousness look like?” The question was posed over three decades ago by a University of Southern California law professor as his lecture drew to a close. “One in which Nature had rights,” he continued. “Yes, rivers, lakes, trees. . . . How could such a posture in law affect a community’s view of itself?” Professor Christopher Stone may as well have announced that he was an alien life form. Rivers and trees are objects, not subjects, in the eyes of the law and are by definition incapable of holding rights. His speculations created an uproar.

Stone stepped away from that lecture a little dazed by the response from the class but determined to back up his argument. He realized that for nature to have rights the law would have to be changed so that, first, a suit could be brought in the name of an aspect of nature, such as a river; second, a polluter could be held liable for harming a river; and third, judgments could be made that would benefit a river. Stone quickly identified a pending appeal to the United States Supreme Court against a decision of the Ninth Circuit that raised these issues. The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals had found that the Sierra Club Legal Defense Fund was not “aggrieved” or “adversely affected” by the proposed development of the Mineral King Valley in the Sierra Nevada Mountains by Walt Disney Enterprises, Inc. This decision meant that the Sierra Club did not have “standing” so the court didn’t need to consider the merits of the matter. Clearly, if the Mineral King Valley itself had been recognized as having rights, it would have been an adversely affected party and would have had the necessary standing.

Fortuitously, Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas was writing a preface to the next edition of the Southern California Law Review. Stone’s seminal “Should Trees Have Standing? Toward Legal Rights for Natural Objects” (“Trees”) was hurriedly squeezed into the journal and read by Justice Douglas before the Court issued its judgment. In “Trees,” Stone argued that courts should grant legal standing to guardians to represent the rights of nature, in much the same way as guardians are appointed to represent the rights of infants. In order to do so, the law would have to recognize that nature was not just a conglomeration of objects that could be owned, but was a subject that itself had legal rights and the standing to be represented in the courts to enforce those rights. The article eventually formed the basis for a famous dissenting judgment by Justice Douglas in the 1972 case of Sierra Club v. Morton in which he expressed the opinion that “contemporary public concern for protecting nature’s ecological equilibrium should lead to the conferral of standing upon environmental objects to sue for their own preservation.”

Perhaps one of the most important things about “Trees” is that it ventured beyond the accepted boundaries of law as we know it and argued that the conceptual framework for law in the United States (and by analogy, elsewhere) required further evolution and expansion. Stone began by addressing the initial reaction that such ideas are outlandish. Throughout legal history, as he pointed out, each extension of legal rights had previously been unthinkable. The emancipation of slaves and the extension of civil rights to African Americans, women, and children were once rejected as absurd or dangerous by authorities. The Founding Fathers, after all, were hardly conscious of the hypocrisy inherent in proclaiming the inalienable rights of all men while simultaneously denying basic rights to children, women, and to African and Native Americans.

“Trees” has since become a classic for students of environmental law, but after three decades its impact on law in the United States has been limited. After it was written, the courts made it somewhat easier for citizens to litigate on behalf of other species and the environment by expanding the powers and responsibilities of authorities to act as trustees of areas used by the public (e.g., navigable waters, beaches, and parks). Unfortunately, these gains have been followed in more recent years by judicial attempts to restrict the legal standing of environmental groups. Damages for harm to the environment are now recoverable in some cases and are sometimes applied for the benefit of the environment. However, these changes fall far short of what Stone advocated for in “Trees.” The courts still have not recognized that nature has directly enforceable rights.

Communities have always used laws to express the ideals to which they aspire and to regulate how power is exercised. Law is also a social tool that is usually shaped and wielded most effectively by the powerful. Consequently, law tends to entrench a society’s fundamental idea of itself and of how the world works. So, for example, even when American society began to regard slavery as morally abhorrent, it was not able to peaceably end the practice because the fundamental concept that slaves were property had been hard-wired into the legal system. The abolition of slavery required not only that the enfranchised recognize that slaves were entitled to the same rights as other humans, but also a political effort to change the laws that denied those rights. It took both the Civil War and the Thirteenth Amendment to outlaw slavery. The Thirteenth Amendment, in turn, played a role in changing American society’s idea of what was acceptable, thereby providing the bedrock for the subsequent civil rights movement.

In the eyes of American law today, most of the community of life on Earth remains mere property, natural “resources” to be exploited, bought, and sold just as slaves were. This means that environmentalists are seldom seen as activists fighting to uphold fundamental rights, but rather as criminals who infringe upon the property rights of others. It also means that actions that damage the ecosystems and the natural processes on which life depends, such as Earth’s climate, are poorly regulated. Climate change is an obvious and dramatic symptom of the failure of human government to regulate human behavior in a manner that takes account of the fact that human welfare is directly dependent on the health of our planet and cannot be achieved at its expense.

In the scientific world there has been more progress. It’s been almost forty years since James Lovelock first proposed the “Gaia hypothesis”: a theory that Earth regulates itself in a manner that keeps the composition of the atmosphere and average temperatures within a range conducive to life. Derided or dismissed by most people at the time, the Gaia hypothesis is now accepted by many as scientific theory. In 2001, more than a thousand scientists signed a declaration that begins “The Earth is a self-regulating system made up from all life, including humans, and from the oceans, the atmosphere and the surface rocks,” a statement that would have been unthinkable for most scientists when “Trees” was written.

The acceptance of Lovelock’s hypothesis can be understood as part of a drift in the scientific world away from a mechanistic understanding of the universe toward the realization that no aspect of nature can be understood without looking at it within the context of the systems of which it forms a part. Unfortunately, this insight has been slow to penetrate the world of law and politics.

But what if we were to imagine a society in which our purpose was to act as good citizens of the Earth as a whole?

What might a governance system look like if it were established to protect the rights of all members of a particular biological community, instead of only humans? Cicero pointed out that each of our rights and freedoms must be limited in order that others may be free. It is far past time that we should consider limiting the rights of humans so they cannot unjustifiably prevent nonhuman members of a community from playing their part. Any legal system designed to give effect to modern scientific understandings (or, indeed, to many cultures’ ancient understandings) of how the universe functions would have to prohibit humans from driving other species to extinction or deliberately destroying the functioning of major ecosystems. In the absence of such regulatory mechanisms, an oppressive and self-destructive regime will inevitably emerge. As indeed it has.

In particular, we should examine the fact that, in the eyes of the law, corporations are considered people and entitled to civil rights. We often forget that corporations are only a few centuries old and have been continually evolving since their inception. Imagine what could be done if we changed the fiduciary responsibilities of directors to include obligations not only to profitability but also to the whole natural world, and if we imposed collective personal liability on corporate managers and stockholders to restore any damage that they cause to natural communities. Imagine if landowners who abused and degraded land lost the right to use it. In an Earth-centered community, all institutions through which humans act collectively would be designed to require behavior that is socially responsible from the perspective of the whole community. A society whose concern is to maintain the integrity or wholeness of the Earth must also refine its ideas about what is “right” and “wrong.” We may find it more useful to condone or disapprove of human conduct by considering the extent to which an action increases or decreases the health of the whole community and the quality or intimacy of the relationships between its members. As Aldo Leopold’s famous land ethic states, “a thing is right when it tends to preserve the integrity, stability, and beauty of the biotic community. It is wrong when it tends otherwise.” From this perspective, individual and collective human rights must be contextualized within, and balanced against, the rights of the other members and communities of Earth.

On September 19, 2006, the Tamaqua Borough of Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, passed a sewage sludge ordinance that recognizes natural communities and ecosystems within the borough as legal persons for the purposes of enforcing civil rights. It also strips corporations that engage in the land application of sludge of their rights to be treated as “persons” and consequently of their civil rights. One of its effects is that the borough or any of its residents may file a lawsuit on behalf of an ecosystem to recover compensatory and punitive damages for any harm done by the land application of sewage sludge. Damages recovered in this way must be paid to the borough and used to restore those ecosystems and natural communities.

According to Thomas Linzey, the lawyer from the Community Environmental Legal Defense Fund who assisted Tamaqua Borough, this ordinance marks the first time in the history of municipalities in the United States that something like this has happened. Coming after more than 150 years of judicially sanctioned expansion of the legal powers of corporations in the U.S., this ordinance is more than extraordinary—it is revolutionary. In a world where the corporation is king and all forms of life other than humans are objects in the eyes of the law, this is a small community’s Boston tea party.

In Africa, nongovernmental organizations in eleven countries are also asserting local community rights in order to promote the conservation of biodiversity and sustainable development. Members of the African Biodiversity Network (ABN) have coined the term “cultural biodiversity” to emphasize that knowledge and practices that support biodiversity are embedded in cultural tradition. The ABN works with rural communities and schools to recover and spread traditional knowledge and practices.

This is part of a wider effort to build local communities, protect the environment by encouraging those communities to value, retain, and build on traditional African cosmologies, and to govern themselves as part of a wider Earth community.

These small examples, emerging shoots of what might be termed “Earth democracy,” are pressing upward despite the odds. It may well be that Earth-centered legal systems will have to grow organically out of human-scale communities, and communities of communities, that understand that they must function as integrated parts of wider natural communities. In the face of climate change and other enormous environmental challenges, our future as a species depends on those people who are creating the legal and political spaces within which our connection to the rest of our community here on Earth is recognized. The day will come when the failure of our laws to recognize the right of a river to flow, to prohibit acts that destabilize Earth’s climate, or to impose a duty to respect the intrinsic value and right to exist of all life will be as reprehensible as allowing people to be bought and sold. We will only flourish by changing these systems and claiming our identity, as well as assuming our responsibilities, as members of the Earth community.

(Threes Have Rights Too) On 12th November, the Bolivian Ambassador Mr. Pablo Solon presented to the UN a Draft Resolution Presentation Speech “Harmony with Mother Earth” (A/C.2/64/L.24) co-sponsored by Algeria, Benin, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Cape Verde, Cuba, Dominica, Ecuador, Eritrea, Georgia, Guatemala, Honduras, Mauritius, Nepal, Nicaragua, Paraguay, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Saint Lucia, Seychelles and Venezuela. The resolution seeks recognition of the Earth as a Whole and the interaction of human beings with that system of which we are a part.

Mr Solon stated to the UN: “We acknowledge and share the progress of the environmental agenda of the United Nations at the level of the biodiversity, the ozone layer, desertification, climate change and other sectors, but we are convinced that this needs to be supplemented with a more holistic approach given the serious global impacts we are witnessing.”

Of the approximately 200 items that the United Nations General Assembly Agenda has, about 10 deal with the environment and sustainable development, and none directly addresses the holistic, global and integrated relationship among human beings and the earth system as a whole. This parallels the focus of the forthcoming international climate change negotiations on the imposed value (i.e. the price we place on the planet’s resources; the financing of reduction of carbon emissions by use of carbon trading etc). To include recognition of the intrinsic value of the planet, as a living being with whom we have an interdependent relationship, would be an acknowledgement of Earth as a Whole, a concept Indigenous communities understand well.

Values: imposed v’s intrinsic

It is the difference between treating the planet as a commodity and taking responsibility. Both start with very different paradigms. The former, from a position of viewing the planet as an inert being, from which we can take without consequence. The latter, a position of understanding the planet as a living being, where we are all interconnected and interdependent. The outcomes of such divergent views are dramatic – and we can see them being played out in the international climate change arena today.

It is not only the 350+ million indigenous peoples of the world and by a similar number of Buddhists who adhere by the intrinsic values of the planet: “1,360 experts from 95 countries that participated in the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment conducted at the request of the Secretary-General Kofi Annan from 2001 to 2005 propose that when analyzing and defining the actions that influence ecosystems it is necessary to consider not only welfare of human beings, but also the intrinsic values of the species and ecosystems.”

Mr Solon’s proposal, supported by the 22 nations, for “a possible declaration of ethical principles and values to a life in harmony with Mother Earth” signals a growing momentum for recognition of what the Bolivian indigenous peoples term ‘buen vivir’ or ‘living well’ and in harmony with nature – a vision shared by many others throughout the world. The new paradigm is starting to take shape.

(Pablo Solon, Second Committee General Assembly UN, New York) One of the greatest discoveries of civ

(Pablo Solon, Second Committee General Assembly UN, New York) One of the greatest discoveries of civilization was the realization that the Earth is not flat and that we live on a globe. Today we are in the midst of a much larger discovery regarding the nature of our home. To know that Earth is not only round but it is a WHOLE.

The Draft Resolution that the Plurinational State of Bolivia presents co-sponsored by Algeria, Benin, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Cape Verde, Cuba, Dominica, Ecuador, Eritrea, Georgia, Guatemala, Honduras, Mauritius, Nepal, Nicaragua, Paraguay, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Saint Lucia, Seychelles, Venezuela (Bolivarian Republic of) is about the Earth as a Whole and the interaction of human beings with that system of which we are a part. The expression “Mother Earth” is used in this Resolution to refer to the interdependence that exists between human beings, other living species and the planet we all inhabit, as noted by resolution 63/278, which declared the International Mother Earth Day. The expression “Mother Earth” only emphasizes the relationship of humans with the System that we all are part of.Earth is a Dynamic Planet. The continents, atmosphere, oceans, glaciers are in a constant change, ever interacting in myriad ways.[1]

Our draft resolution is called Harmony with Mother Earth, because the balance of human beings with nature has dangerously altered over in the last century.

According to a study from the International Geosphere-Biosphere Program (IGBP), entitled Global Change and the Earth System, the planet behaves as a single, integrated and self-regulating system composed of physical, chemical, biological and human components. The interactions and feedbacks between components are complex and have multiple temporal and spatial scales.

The study states: “Until very recently in the history of Earth, humans and their activities have been an insignificant force in the dynamics of the Earth System. Today, humankind has begun to match and even exceed nature in terms of changing the biosphere and impacting other facets of Earth System functioning. The magnitude, spatial scale, and pace of human-induced change are unprecedented. Human activity now equals or surpasses nature in several biogeochemical cycles. The spatial reach of the impacts is global, either through the flows of the Earth’s cycles or the cumulative changes in its states. The speed of these changes is on the order of decades to centuries, not the centuries to millennia pace of comparable change in the natural dynamics of the Earth System.”[2]

On July 13th, 2001 scientists from four international research programs on global change, the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme (IGBP), the International Human Dimensions Programme on Global Environmental Change (IHDP), the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) and the International Biodiversity Programme DIVERSITAS – adopted the Amsterdam Declaration on Global Change that states: “Human activities are significantly influencing Earth’s environment in many ways in addition to greenhouse gas emissions and climate change.Anthropogenic changes to Earth’s land surface, oceans; coasts, atmosphere, biological diversity, the water cycle and biogeochemical cycles are clearly identifiable beyond natural variability. They are equal to some of the great forces of nature in their extent and impact. Many are accelerating. Global change is real and is happening now.”[3]

And such statement continues: “Global change cannot be understood in terms of a simple cause-effect paradigm.Human-driven changes cause multiple effects that cascade through the Earth System in complex ways.”

Human activities are unwittingly triggering abrupt changes with severe consequences for the environment of the Earth and its inhabitants.

The effects of these changes are not limited to climate change and affect other areas such as, among others:

Dramatic coastal and marine habitat alteration

Significant increases in rates of intoxication of terrestrial and marine species

Increased nitrogen and methane concentration in the atmosphere

Significant loss of the ozone layer

Unusual increase in temperature

Greater frequency of major floods and natural disasters

Significant loss of tropical forests

The second half of the 20th Century has been the starting point for a range of human activities that have accelerated dramatically in the last century. The last 50 years have been, according to several scientific studies, of the “most rapid transformation of the human relationship with the natural world in the history of mankind.”[4]

These human activities

Are approaching or already exceeding the magnitude of some of the great forces of nature,

Are operating at a speed that surpasses the rates of normal variability of the land along at least the last 420.000 years of recorded time due to data obtained from the Vostok ice crust.

Considering its magnitude, extent, frequency and concurrency have caused, in scientific terms, a “no-analogue state”, a state never seen before in the dynamics and functioning of the Earth System.

The impact of human activities is so great that Paul Crutzen, a Nobel laureate in chemistry, and other scientists propose that we are in a new geological era: the Anthropocene Era.

The analysis of the Earth as a System and its relationship to human activity is a major issue in the scientific and academic world. The “National Aeronautics and Space Administration” (NASA) in its “Earth Science Enterprise” program has posed the following question: how is the Earth changing and what are the consequences for life in Earth? And, more specifically: How is the Earth System responding to natural and human changes? And what are the consequences of these changes in the Earth System to civilization?[5]

The inclusion of an item in the agenda entitled “Harmony with Mother Earth” seeks to promote such reflection, debate and development of proposals at the political intergovernmental level.

This item would allow us to discuss the issue of the Earth in a holistic, global way, in its entirety. We acknowledge and share the progress of the environmental agenda of the United Nations at the level of the biodiversity, the ozone layer, desertification, climate change and other sectors, but we are convinced that this needs to be supplemented with a more holistic approach given the serious global impacts we are witnessing.

Human knowledge always advances by complementing the general with the particular perspective, the sectorial approximation with the global approach.

The proposed resolution seeks to develop a perspective of balance between human beings and Nature. We believe that the concepts of human supremacy on the environment are completely outdated by now. Hence the importance of the concept of harmony, which seeks both present and future human welfare as well as nature’s welfare. After all, there can be neither welfare nor human development if we destroy our mother earth.

1,360 experts from 95 countries that participated in the “Millennium Ecosystem Assessment” conducted at the request of the Secretary-General Kofi Annan from 2001 to 2005 propose that when analyzing and defining the actions that influence ecosystems it is necessary to consider not only welfare of human beings, but also the intrinsic values of the species and ecosystems. ‘Intrinsic value is the value of something in and for itself, irrespective of its utility for someone else.”[6]

It is not about practicing the status quo or inertia to not affect nature. The life of human beings always involves a degree of impact to the planet Earth. The challenge of humanity is for such involvement not to end up breaking the balance of the Earth System reversing against human development itself.

Our resolution puts humans and nature at the center. Our goal is to complement and deepen the concept of sustainable development from the perspective of humanity and future generations, and from the perspective of nature and the socio-environmental system as a whole.

The concept of harmony with nature is in various multilateral and regional declarations such as:

World Charter for Nature, United Nations 48th General Assembly. October 28th, 1982

Rio Declaration on Environment and Development, The United Nations Conference on Environment and Development. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, June 3-14th, 1992

Declaration of Santiago, II Summit of the Americas, Santiago, Chile, April 19th, 1998

Declaration on Environment and Sustainable Development in the Carpathian and Danube Region. Bucharest, Romania, April 30th, 2001

UNASUR Constitutive Treaty. Brasilia, Brazil, May 23rd, 2007

Fifteenth SAARC Summit Declaration. Colombo, Sri Lanka, August 3rd, 2008

Final Declaration, VII Summit of Heads of State and Government of the ALBA-TCP. Cochabamba, Bolivia, October 17th, 2009

Of the approximately 200 items that the United Nations General Assembly Agenda has, about 10 deal with the environment and sustainable development, and none directly addresses the holistic, global and integrated relationship among human beings and the earth system as a whole. Therefore we consider urgent the inclusion of this item.

As indicated by the “National Aeronautics and Space Administration” (NASA): “Global-scale changes require a global perspective, and local and regional changes can only be fully understood in the global context. Integrating our scientific understanding of the major components of planet Earth to achieve a holistic understanding of how it functions as a system is an essential step towards reliably predicting its future course of change.” [7]

In considering this issue, we propose to start with what States are already doing at a scientific, environmental policy and normative level. Sharing the experiences, practices and visions, and start discussing possible common initiatives and exchanging views on the scope and contents of a possible declaration of ethical principles and values to a life in harmony with Mother Earth. The report of the Secretary General that we ask for in this Draft Resolution, where the criteria of Member States and the United Nations System will be collected, will provide valuable inputs to initiate this process.

We propose to start with a non-binding, general guideline approach, to begin to move in a relatively new and complex issue. Having a general framework will allow us to develop new, and strengthen some existing initiatives at a global level.

In the Amsterdam Declaration on Global Change, to which we refer, scientists from the Earth System Science Partnership propose that “an ethical framework for global stewardship and strategies for Earth System management are urgently needed. The accelerating human transformation of the Earth’s environment is not sustainable. Therefore, the business-as-usual way of dealing with the Earth System is not an option. It has to be replaced as soon as possible by deliberate strategies of good management that sustain the Earth’s environment while meeting social and economic development objectives.”

That framework of ethical principles and values for a life in harmony with the Earth System would have to collect the substantial progress of the World Charter for Nature, the Rio Declaration deepening and adjusting them to fit the experience and challenges posed by the global reality of the XXI Century.

For these international norms to be efficient, attractive and to have support, it is necessary that they be consistent with the values that guide people’s conduct. To that extent we must try to agree on common ethical foundations. Ethics is the minimum standard that makes a collective life possible. The world in this new Anthropocene era needs an ethical basis on which to stand.

Humankind’s capacity for adapting to the future rests on its cultural diversity and on the biological diversity of the planet. These two diversities are part of the global heritage, of the common goods of our Mother Earth.

Humans have to understand nature and its inherent operating rules that also include us. All people on earth share a common fate. We all live in a world where everything is interconnected and interdependent of all. No matter where we live, what we do affects our mother earth and all of us.

It is our intention that this resolution be approved by consensus while preserving the essence of our proposal. To that extent we want to work with all the delegations to absolve their concerns and gather their proposals so that we are all active participants in this great challenge we have in the XXI century.

Thank you very much.

Στην κατηγορία για καλύτερη δραματική σειρά φιγουράρουν και τα Grey’s Anatomy, Lost και House, ενώ το Harry Potter and the Half Blood Princeγια την καλύτερη ταινία.

Beautiful Meghalaya, India’s self styled abode of the clouds just happens to be one of my favo

Beautiful Meghalaya, India’s self styled abode of the clouds just happens to be one of my favourite places on this Earth, and I have barely scratched the surface of this state. Dominated by the matriarchy of the Khasi, Garo and Janita peoples, it is essentially is one large, wet plateau. And it is gorgeous. Lacking in nightlife, but making up for it in the daytime, the people of Meghalaya are fun loving, hard working and surrounded by some of the most beautiful scenery in the world. Green hills as far as the eye can see, waterfalls everywhere and of course hidden villages filled with mystique and intrigue…

And as I have mentioned earlier in this blog, there is a rich culture to discover in this land. Along with great food, Meghalaya is a destination that is much maligned by travelers to India. The North East has a reputation for being remote (true – but only due to the farcical Bangladeshi border) and dangerous (not the parts I have been to). It is left untouched by the common tourist. Many people within India (including the immigration officers at the airports) are surprised that I am willing to travel to Meghalaya, but for people beyond India, it is a place that is not even on their tourist radar. Quite simply, it is not well publicised. A shame for the local tourist industry but blissful for people seeking a little bit of peace in one of the world’s most crowded countries, it is bliss to find this empty quarter. Both times I have traveled to Meghalaya, I have only bumped into foreigners twice, which is surprising when you head into the rest of India and meet the rest of the world coming to see this fantastic land.

And contemplating my next big trip, I think I know where I am heading off to…

waking up on friday was like hell (a sign i should have taken heed of!). Even though my first lecture had been cancelled, i still had an 11am one to get to, meaning i had to be up round 9am. this doesnt sound too bad, except that i was still drunk from the night before! having survived an hour of droning from the lecturer, it was time for me to go home, pack my bags and get ready to go to Portsmouth (round about 4 hour car journey). this is where the puking in random peoples cars comes in. As we (me, the driver and another random, lets call them Sam and Pete ) were at a super busy round about, the first signs kicked in. the look of horror on the Pete’s face as i heaved up and proceeded to swallow ‘em back twice would have been comical had i not been silently dying of embarrassment. Being a person who prides herself in being perceived as reserved and more than a little middle-class, this was not the way i would normally introduce my self. having only met the driver that very day, i still can’t acknowledge him on campus. the shame!

had that been the end of my misadventure, i would probably be a much happier person. having arrived at Portsmouth and not having much to eat, i had to sit for a few hours in meeting (the reason of being there) with my tummy letting me know how angry it still was with me. the icing of the cake was getting a call from home said a good friend of mine had been taken to hospital and i had to go back. i did eventually manage to get home after delayed (and cancelled) trains, miss 3 trains (including the last train home) getting drenched in rain and gettin lost in london, at 1 in the morning!

all i can say is NEVER AGAIN!! It wouldn’t be so bad had i made it to my friend’s bedside, but alas the hospital wardens dont like late night visitors, no matter how long you’ve travelled!

welcome to university life!

Hello, Poptropicans, I have a few announcements to make regarding the future of this blog and Fierce

Hello, Poptropicans,

I have a few announcements to make regarding the future of this blog and Fierce Sky. No, I am not quitting, don’t get worried.

First off, I’d like to announce that I am now an author of the Poptropican People’s Blog! You may recognize this blog from either the PHB post or part of the 6.5k+ viewers of the site. I’m going to be posting some stuff both from this blog and some original stuff exclusively for the PPB. This does not mean in any way that I am quitting this blog!!! The PPB wanted some of the critically acclaimed content that is only on this site to be on there. (Yes, it is critically acclaimed, look at the comments and forum.) I am happy to be a poster on there, as I have been reading their blog for quite some time. This blog will still remain my personal and main Poptropica blog, of course.

So, moving on, after considering the possibilities and consequences that changing the web address bring, I have decided to keep this blog at the web address http://poptropicahelpblog.wordpress.com. I don’t feel it has done any harm to anyone, and this blog is still a Poptropica help blog. I don’t see any immediate need for a new URL at the time. I will only change it if there are either several complaints from users, or if any member of the PHB complains about the address. Neither of those have happened as of yet. If you have a decision-changing reason for me to change the address, and lose all my previous statistics and probably some of you frequent viewers, then please comment on this post, as I appreciate all your comments.

So, that about wraps it up for now. Until next time,

Farhan Bokhari, Islamabad

China has agreed to sell Pakistan at least 36 advanced fighter jets in a deal worth as much as $1.4bn, according to Pakistani and western officials.

Beijing will supply two squadrons of the J-10 fighter jet in a preliminary agreement that could lead to more sales, said a Pakistani official. The official said Pakistan might buy “larger numbers” of the multi-role aircraft in the future, but dismissed reports that Islamabad had signed a deal to purchase as many as 150 of the fighter jets.

Defence experts described the agreement with China as a landmark event in Pakistan’s defence relationship with the military power. China’s transition from a manufacturer of low-fighters to more advanced jets comparable to some western models is seen as evidence of Beijing’s increasing strategic clout in Asia.

“China is developing a real capacity to produce and export its arms. At one point, the Chinese were dependent on imported Russian technology, but obviously China has advanced significantly beyond those days,” said Marika Vicziany, Professor of Asian studies at Monash University in Melbourne.

“This agreement should not simply be seen in the narrow context of Pakistan’s relations with China,” said Abdul Qayyum, a retired Pakistani general.

“There is a wider dimension. By sharing its advanced technology with Pakistan, China is … also saying to the world that its defence capability is growing rapidly.”

China has supplied Pakistan with fighter jets for more than three decades. But Beijing has seldom supplied Pakistan’s air force with advanced fighter aircraft. Islamabad turned to France for Mirage fighter jets in the 1970s and to the US for F-16s in the 1980s.

Pakistan has a fleet of 45 F-16s built by Lockheed Martin. The Pakistani air force is using the fighter jet in its campaign against militants in South Waziristan.

The US has agreed to sell Islamabad another 18 new F-16s and Pakistani officials also expected the US to supply about a dozen older versions of the aircraft.

Over the past decade, China and Pakistan have collaborated on building their first jointly produced advanced fighter jet, known as the JF-17, or “Thunder”. Pakistan is expected to roll out the first domestically built version of the Thunder within weeks.

Pakistan’s air force plans to purchase at least 250 of the Thunder fighters over the next four to five years.

Experts see the new Pakistani focus on China as evidence that Beijing is trying to expand its military power.

“Countries like Iran and possibly some of the Middle Eastern countries would be keen to deal with China if they can find technology which is comparable to the west,” said one western official in Islamabad.

“Pakistan will work as the laboratory to try out Chinese aircraft. If they work well with the Pakistani air force, others will follow.”

I was up to other things. But I’m here now, and thats the important thing. Have to say, I’ m freaking loving this weather. I bet most people are sat inside thinking shit, the end is nigh or something crap like that but I’m realy loving it.

To me, its realy cheerful and refreshing. It’s like a new start… ish. Blowing all the crap away so I can start again. YAY!

I have to go out in a little bittle to get some food. And I have some bullshit family thing on later, but I don’t plan on going. BLEH! chinease food is rank. I’m soory, but I just can’t stand it. it looks nasty, it smells nasty and it tastes the nastiest.

Plus, why should I treck out when they never bother to come and see me, when I can just watch X Factor?!

WoW its so freaking dark outside right now. Just sat waiting for the heavy rain and winds. c’mon c’mon c’mon.

Y’all blates think i’ve losted it. don’t worry, I losted it a long time ago…

Until we meet again people. Xx
