Després d’haver fet gana se n’anàrem a Quatretonda. Allí està l’Heretat de Pere. Casa Rural, mini granja i restaurant on ens havíen dit, amics de la Vall d’Albaida, que es menjava bé. Vam anar a comprovar-ho.

This 19th of December edition of the Amsterdam labelnight ‘Redevice invites…’ @ Studio 80 features the scandalously underrated Sub Static and Karloff Rekordings label-boss Falko Brocksieper. In order to keep up with our reputation of providing a playground for more experimental and absurd techno approaches, we’ve also invited Vera Heindel, San Proper & Kouam Djoko. Talk about letting those dogs out.
Here’s an exclusive interview plus mix avec Falko, to get the juices flowing.

Could you tell us about the founding of Sub Static and Karloff Recordings. What was your role in both labels?

Sub Static was founded in Cologne in 2000 when I met my long-term partner MIA. Our aim was just to create a small platform for our music and ideas. However this soon became a more serious occupation, as we increasingly enjoyed to work for international content and reputation. It led to the desire to release an even wider range of electronic music we loved, so the sublabel Karloff Rekordings was established in 2003.
At times we had approaches to grow the labels to a higher business level, but after all the basis of our motivation and qualification was always just to release and promote our favourite music.
Mia and I never had clearly defined roles in the label management, so anything within A&R, promotion, administration, accounting was my daily business. I also did all of the graphic design.

One of our favorite mixes of the year is the MNML SSG MX36 you did, which features half-forgotten gems from the likes of Mouse On Mars, Robert Hood & Plaid. Could you tell us something about your musical roots and artists that have most inspired you?

What first got me into techno was trance, mostly european stuff, in the early 90’s. However at the time this wasn’t even a clearly outlined genre, neither was it cheesy or commercial. It simply meant – techno that is monotonic and trippy. When I got my first set of turntables and started to spend more time in recordshops I soon discovered the music of Robert Hood, Jeff Mills, Dan Bell, Woody McBride.. alot of mid-90’s minimal techno, mostly from the states. And soon after there was stuff like Aphex Twin, Mouse on Mars, Two Lone Swordsmen, Mille Plateaux & Rephlex stuff…. also alot of electro. Then even more techno – Cristian Vogel & Brighton crew, Maurizio, Kompakt… It’s been exciting times musically, which intensified for me even more when I moved to Cologne in 1997 to study at the Academy of Media Arts.
It’s this spirit of the 2nd half of the 90’s that I tried to capture in the recent mix you mentioned. Part of the spirit is also the health, complexity and mysticism of musical culture at that time — it seems like a very short time window between the farreaching innovation of electronic music, and the start of desktop producing, discogs, downloads and information overkill.

You originate from Cologne, but you operate from Berlin since 2004. Has this move influenced your productions/DJ-sets in a significant way?

I can’t really say how much influence this or the other city has. I think for the main part, moving to another place always changes your way of thinking, and gives you a new perspective on many things — which was also what I was looking for when I decided to move.
What I can say is – approving the clichee – Berlin has been and still is a very inspiring & vibrant place to live and I have no desire to live anywhere else.

You’ve been pretty productive lately when it comes to releasing. Do you have a lot of unreleased material stored up somewhere?

No, piles of unreleased material is what i never had, unfortunately. However this year has been quite productive indeed. Last year I finally released my 2nd album and was touring with my first live set, both helping me to get a fresh approach on the new productions that came out this year.

Any future plans we should know about?

Right now I’m working on a completely new live set, enabling me to be a bit more flexible and improvisational. It’s also giving me ideas for a couple of new tracks already. You can expect some new releases of me in early 2009, but it’s too soon now to announce any particulars.
Also I’m in the studio again with Benjamin Fehr, recording new material as ‘The Result’. Our first release came out this summer on his label Catenaccio. Another EP will be out soon on Brouqade Rec, as well as remixes on TicTacToe and the remarkable NervMusic from Moscow.

Mimicking and copy catting is inevitable. I’m part of a generation where just about everything

Mimicking and copy catting is inevitable. I’m part of a generation where just about everything’s been done. In this closing year of 2009, the “Obama Generation” is raised with a mentality, no flat out law of nature: Everything new is automatically traditional. A fatalistic prediction has become a fatal reality. The war is not fought on the terrain, nor in the sky, or in the mind. the war is fought against each other. The war is fought in the past. We already know we have lost. Fighting has lost all value. So here I sit, comfortable. Ready to fight. If I’m brave enough.

The choking paralyzing fear felt by every teenager, must go through the pipes first. The chain of freedom, nor the chimes are there anymore. There is no freedom for anybody anywhere. Even those enforcing the punishment are not free. The moment you enter Public School, you enter a cruel spin cycle downwards. All the way down until the end.

So here I was, the precipice of student loans, diversity, more learning. College. After that I don’t really know what. But I’m not quite sure if I’m happy with what the future holds. But, no sense in thinking about the future. Better to slow myself down. I think too hard, and too fast. I needed something to calm me down, something to make my junior year more bearable. It’s been a few months since Summer, and I think I have my plan. A sort of social experiment, a search. Very recently, a man in his forties told me that I needed to push myself out of my comfort zone. So here I am, taking a risk. But, then again, it’s not like High School can get much worse.

PEP RALLY

It was during, I think fourth period, that I was awoken from my slumber.

“Charlie!” somebody shout-whispers my name at me. I blink away and see the pale skin of my hand. I look over and I see Lucy, or LuLu, as she’s called by some of her friends. Not me though, I have no time for nick names. Lulu is from, I think, Vietnam. My grand father would slap the peach fuzz off my chin, if he knew I hung out with Charlie. Maybe my father named me Charlie to spite him? Some sort of a father issue I’m sure. I don’t really have father issues. Shit, my dad got me the bottle of Vicodin stashed in my backpack right now. I can’t help myself. I have about nine left. Vidodin doesn’t make me sleepy, but I’m just so mellow I can’t help myself. Lulu isn’t looking at me, as she taps me awake. She’s got nice skin, and very nice lips. God I’m mellow.

Today there’s a pep rally after school. Best day to start my experiment. I don’t have to focus, don’t have to worry about work. Not like I do anyways. Apparently Lulu was tapping me because our teacher, Mr. Hoyle is passing tests back. I’m not sure if they’re ones we’ve graded or what. It’s blank when it comes to me so I’m assuming it’s one he expects me to do right now. What’s it about?

THE GREAT GATSBY CHAPTERS 4 – 6

Fair enough. I can’t really say whether or not it’s a good book, I’ve never read it. Oh, well, I guess I’ll just check off a few things here and there. Why not? Mr.Hoyle is a nice enough guy. Looks like he graduated from College, and couldn’t cut it as a dentist or something. Poor fuck. I remember hearing about him whenever I was a freshman. Back in those glorious days there used to be great big fucking trees that lined the back of the school. Right past the portable classrooms and all the electrical horse shit. Trees where it was perfectly safe to hide and do whatever you please. Get high, get blown, get fingering.

So here’s Mr. Hoyle, during lunch, out walking around. He sees these two suspicious looking Hispanic youngsters in the trees. Gay lovers? Possibly. The public School system of south Texas, I would imagine, don’t take kindly to no queers. That didn’t stop the rumors of gay anal sex in the locker room from spreading around like the swine flu. Anyways, here’s Mr. Hoyle. He walks up to the two boys, and before he can get much closer, they spot him.

“Hey!” he shouts, knowing full well what they just stomped out. It’s too cold to just be standing around outside. Not unless you’ve got a fire. They begin walking out, and steering clear of his direction, running at a pretty fast pace. So here’s Mr. Hoyle stepping after these two dopers, a man in his late twenties. From what I know, the second he grabs one of their shoulders to get some answers, the boy whips around like a top and belts Mr. Hoyle in the chin. And also, from what I know, this knocked Mr. Hoyle right on his back in the cold Winter grass. The two dopers got away. I don’t really know what happened to them whether or not they got caught. Perhaps. I’ve heard of worse. I’ve heard kids talk about getting stoned directly to their teacher, who just shrugs their head.

I guess the adults, at least the ones here, have just flat out given up. For some reason they aren’t bothering to tell us that drugs are bad. Drugs can fuck you up good and proper, they don’t tell us that anymore. They just say they’ll kick us out if they find it. That’s about it. Not that I’m against drugs. I can’t really be against them, I’ve gotta take them for the next few months.

When you’re like me, halfway intelligent surrounded by mouth breathers, you often have deep thoughts. Either that or do drugs. I could never have quite the patience to regularly get my hands on narcotics, so I just stuck primarily with my deep thoughts. But now here I was, combining the two. I try to be positive in this place, and I succeed some days. I’ve had a lot more good days than my Freshman and Sophomore year. But at a certain point, I can’t take this garbage sober. Who can? It’s not like I’ll be the first to get fucked up before they come to school. High school of all places. And it’s a pep rally. I’d rather overdose on amphetamines than school spirit. Once you get too much of that shit you don’t just die and it’s over. You die inside and your corpse is left to parade around the halls in a trite two color schemed outfit. Paint on your face and a slogan on your shirt. A little bill board for your school. Fuck that.

Why not just ignore it? The homework, the teachers, the rules, the hours. All that can go fuck itself. So why don’t I just drop out? That’s like asking myself why don’t I just blow my brains out? Why bother with all the problems of living life as a human? I know deep down it won’t make a difference if I live or die, if I stay or drop out. Honestly the only reason I’m staying is because I’m having too much of a good time with the people around me. Watching them, judging them and occasionally liking them. Hey, what can I say? I’m a people person. That’s what this is all about, anyways. Why do thousands of these kids get up at ungodly hours and trudge over to this place? I could understand if it was for friends, but I mean shit. Go to the mall for that. Why do they really care about grades? I need to know what motivates them to come here day. I have a few things, maybe about three, for real.

But, in the meantime, I have Jay Gatsby to take care of. Lulu is a real doll, she lets me cheat off her. Great girl. I don’t know why I’ve never tried starting some kind of a companionship with her. Maybe we’re both too smart? I dunno, lemme see. Okay that wasn’t so difficult. Lulu is really a gem. I have an interesting, chain-linky like relationship with her that I’ll need to explain later. For now I have to turn in our tests. I say our, because I feel it’s the least I can do: turning in her test for her. I pass by these two three foot wrestling kids who sit together and one of them gives me a funny look.

I’m gonna go ahead and say now: Wrestling is very, very homoerotic. Everybody knows this. But you’d be a damned fool not to know that any one of these animals could tear your face off without a second thought. As gay as they may be, you have to respect wrestlers. It’s not like they’re football players. I look back at them once I sit in my seat. One of them looks back at me. He turns to his friend and laughs. Ugh, I figure I’ll get some sleep. I don’t want to become that “stupid weird kid”. These two short brick shit houses. One of them at least knows how short he is, in a self-deprecating kind of way that makes him very tolerable for a sporting kid. Now I look like a fool to him. Great. I’d just like to go four years without looking like an idiot to anybody. Perhaps an extremely tall order to fill in a place like high school.

I wonder how many vicodin I could take in one day and still be safe? I still only wanna take one every morning, I can’t afford to lose this shit. So now I’m sitting here in the middle of class, and I’ve got a red sore on my ass from sitting in these seats for so fucking long. The only respite is the smooth curves of Lulu’s lips. God how I wish I was not seventeen. Not cursed with naughty, naughty thoughts of good friends. I once read some nerd ask a question that went: “What should I do if I have a wet dream about my best girl friend?” the reply was a very short, Christian: “Never talk to that person again.” If I followed that advice I wouldn’t have any friends. Well, some men of course, but not girls. Because the Vicodin is beginning to slip into the space between my mask and my face. I slowly feel all the little pieces of mental garbage lifted from my brain and it puffs up all amazing and pink like cotton candy in my skull. Magnificent. My limbs get tingly warm, and my eyes just don’t give a shit anymore. My lips, instead of a natural frown, attain a natural dazed smirk. My chapped lips, unlike the smooth puffy lips of Lulu.

This whole thing is going pretty swimmingly from the start. One morning in, and I’m actually contemplating asking a casual friend for a casual blowjob sometime. I wonder. I think I’ll get ripped and walk around the cafeteria during lunch, asking every girl for head. There’s about a thousand or so broads sitting in the commons at lunch. One is bound to find me as attractive as I find myself, and slutty enough to wanna come slobber on me for a little bit. It’s statistics, it kind of has to work. That’s what I learned in math.

Later on in the day and luckily, my vicodin has stayed to the end of the day. Probably because I haven’t felt it’s sickly soft helmet on my scalp in quite a while. My backpack feels like it’s floating on my body and my shoes feel like they’re made of marshmallows. And every girl passing by me, Lulu, Clarice, and her boyfriend are all made out of absolute gorgeous. I wonder what I would feel like if I took ecstasy. Shit, I wanna fuck most of the girls I see even when I’m sober. The closer we walk though the throng of radiating teenage bodies, jumping and screaming, to the gym the more I begin to realize what would normally be a dark thought. But since I’m kind of floating a mellow, it’s actually not that bad. Maybe every time I take this, I’ll only think about women. Hmm…. I don’t think so. No, during History I had a pretty amazing daydream about being a viking, there was only a little sex in that.

I had fiery red hair and a great red beard, and a great big red dog by my side. I ran, adrenaline pumped, through rain darkened villages hammering the heads of anything in my way. Smash. Smash. God the adrenaline of it, so satisfying. Then I found a nice Swedish girl and fucked her. But that’s pretty much how every story ends.

The student body is so crowded, fucked up, and somehow selfish that walking through a thin hallway is like wading through a big swimming pool filled with warm marshmallow fluff. Aahh… Once I’m out of the marshmallow pits, I’m into the Small Gym, or the lesser gym. If you don’t wanna watch the shit that goes on in the big gym during a pep rally (Dancing, cheerleading, blind folded football players eating their mom’s snatch, the usual), you head your un-washed way into the small gym. Lots of kids came to the small gym, a lot of the kids I was friends with. Once kid come up to me, his name is Homer. I know I’ve seen him in an altered state, so it’s high time I returned the favor.

“Hey what’s up, man?” he asks putting his hand out. I hug him, in the middle of all the teenagers, crazy happy to see their dumb friends.

“I fucking love narcotics, sir…” I sort of shout, I think. Kids always shout crazy shit during a pep rally like “Gay!” and “Rape!”. ” I fucking love narcotics is god too.”

“Shit, man, I know what you mean. You lit right now?!” he asks, grinning an acne free grin on his skater punk face.

“Yeah, pretty much, sir… You should try it.” by this point I realize how rude I’m being because I’m not looking at him. I’m looking over at Lulu, with one her friends. Now the lights in the gym are like spotlights. Now the people all around me are asshole. Lulu is walking to her friend, her name is Daisy. Daisy is the reason I’m fucked up.

“I believed it all. When the Life Magazine cover came out after the 1967 war, with the Israelis on the tank, I thought, This is really a miracle. The people who were almost wiped out in the Holocaust have been reborn. They’re so goodlooking, and they have kibbutzes, they’re on the land, and they won’t be defeated. I never thought that it involved displacing other people. I’ve come to think that I was brainwashed.”

(Note: PrEP – see part 1 -is an experimental HIV prevention strategy that, if proven effective

(Note: PrEP – see part 1 -is an experimental HIV prevention strategy that, if proven effective, would reduce the chance of HIV infection in HIV negative people, provided individuals take a single drug, (or combination) daily. Also discussed are i-PrEP, or intermittent PrEP, where someone takes the medication intermittently, and topical PrEP, known as Caprisa, a gel microbicide also undergoing trials, used vaginally to avoid infection from HIV.)

Glion at the Swiss riveria

The weather has been perfection here in Glion. The air is crisp and still and while the sun sweeps across the riveria from high above the mountains, the landscape splits and erupts with a forest that burns brightly with the reds, yellows and limes of autumn.

I’m writing this from the top of the mountains here, thinking about our discussions on PrEP over the last few days. It has been a fascinating discussion, if at times frustrating. I watched and listened as the divide between the sciences and the humanities fought to create to a bridge that would unite their ideas, only to, at times, be speaking in a different language, and exchanging ideas in alternate currencies. People want to see the drugs work, the HIV/AIDS world are immersed in prevention and treatment measures 24/7 and although some of the discourse seemed a world away from life on the street with HIV, a bridge was being built to bring thread the various strands of PrEP together.

The Missing Link

The big questions seemed to be around data – there just isn’t any yet. While the studies on animals have been promising, on humans – the data just isn’t in yet. The desire for everyone to try and find new and emerging solutions to the current HIV epidemic is clear – and it is behind the reason we are all here today. Looking at PrEP, i-PrEP, and Caprisa, -( a topical PrEP)– are the issues, and thoughts of how to manage the implentation of this when the data is out, is what the workshops here are based around.

Yet, from my perspective, I see all the people involved here at quite different stages of how to manage the next steps. There are still too many variables.

I can certainly see the importance of finding a drug that people in high risk

overlooking Montreux

environments can take that will prevent them from becoming infected with HIV. Yet even if the results are good, asking people – even if they are in high risk environments – to take a strong drug, every day for 2, 3, 4 or more years – so they ‘probably’ won’t get HIV, seems a long shot, especcially knowing just how hard it can be just to start taking HIV meds, let alone taking them every day!

The Contraceptive Debate

It is true to say however, that people do take contraception. Women do take the pill, and they did and do understand that they have to take it EVERY day for it to be effective, just as the PrEP regime expects. So there was a discussion about looking into how the pill was introduced, and there will be a deeper look into this when the time comes for implementation. However, I heard of a Dr who had researched the contraceptive pill for decades, and has now given up on the idea of a daily pill – that monthly or more injections are the only way forward as being an acceptable offering for women today. And perhaps she is right. How many of us miss a pill? How many pregnancies have occurred because of it?

We don’t currently know the data on intermittant PrEP, (an HIV pill that you would take intermittantly), and they are looking at injectable options for this as well. This could be the way forward, although it order to get there, we may have to traverse some rather rocky road.

Where could PrEP be useful?

view from the mountain above Glion

For me, and these are my thoughts, there seems to be the strongest case for PrEP in a few areas. It seems that currently, we need to match up a few areas for PrEP to be really useful. Combining factors like; 1) high risk environments 2) ability to adhere to drug regime (due to the need for further testing of PrEP and its ability to work), and 3) low ‘collateral damage’ – which basically means ensuring people won’t be abused or targeted, such as with hate crimes or violence for taking drugs which may be stigmatising.

If so, then perhaps the first is for women in high risk environments, such as parts of Africa and India where the rates of HIV are extremely high and, where the levels of sexual oppression of women is high. Where women may be unable to negotiate safer sex, yet may still have fairly stable routines around raising their families (their husbands may work away for weeks at a time and have sex outside the relationship). If novel ways are thought of to ensure PrEP reaches these women, (through health clinics, outreach etc) it could prevent HIV infection to women and then transmission to their infants if they became pregnant. NOTE: PrEP is not advocated at this stage for pregnant women, or adolesants.

It was unfortunate that I didn’t hear prisons mentioned, as I quietly thought this could be a good way to address the factors I mentioned beforehand. High risk environments (the rates of HCV and HIV in many prisons are truely awful), ability to adhere (you’d take them at the medication hatch as you would with any other medication), and low collateral damage. If, say, all prisoners were offered the opportunity to receive these meds, those exposed to IV drug use and sex could be protecting themselves effectively.

Of course, the 3rd group is serodiscordant couples – where one is HIV positive and the other is not. But perhaps PEP is of better use here? Taking the drug directly AFTER exposure – for the PEP limit of 4-6 weeks only. Now that’s fine as long as you know your partner is HIV positive. Some people don’t.

People Who Inject Drugs

Where does that leave people who inject drugs? Although to expect people who

meeting room in Victoria Hotel

are in very challenging, high risk environments already, to take a pill that needs routine – I know is difficult – but that certainly dosent mean they should be ruled out. In fact, in 2010, the 2nd PrEP trial to bring results will be a study of 2,400 Thai intravenous drug users – despite the fact that the there was some dispute about what the findings would be (so few were expected to sero convert – that studying PrEPs efficacy is expected to be hard.) It could be useful for our community, dispensed alongside methadone or syringes for example, but many of us may well prefer to have enough sterile syringes, or opiate replacement treatments first. Would some governments take monies away from these interventions to trial or introduce PrEP?

So where did that leave the discussions? I’ve just written a few thoughts of my own. To be honest, tracking the complex structures of scientists and researchers was difficult, and each time I felt I had something to say, something kept telling me to wait because there would be something else around the corner that would complicate things again! Often it did, other times someone would just say what I was thinking, so perhaps for the first time in a while, I was unusually quiet!

Drug Resistance?

Drug resistance was not an issue apparently, and it has been overestimated. And, because overall, rates of new HIV infections are estimated to decrease with PrEP, so will drug resistant strains of HIV decrease. Thus it is unlikely new resistant strains will increase, but it is likely, in the smaller group of new infections, there will be slight increase in drug resistant strains. If that makes sense! A 0.2% increase over 10 years using PrEP, versus 0.9% increase without using PrEP (-of drug-resistant strains).

Trying to summerise the complexities here is very hard. But I’ll try…

In Summery…

This is Montreux, on the Swiss Riviera

Poorly run programes are often worse than no programmes at all. People are going to die if they dont get HIV treatments, but they COULD die if they don’t get PrEP. Countries like South Africa are broke – they already have to pick from a ‘shopping list’ that gives them the ‘best bang for their buck’ so recently that has seen them take on male circumcision as a prevention measure (it increases your protection from HIV). Other countries are in the same boat. Can we afford for them to take from the treatment budget the already scarce resources for HIV positive people – to spend on negative ones?

Four statements emerged that best summed up the approach to implementing PrEP, if it proves to be effective in the next few years. We will need to:

Know your target audience – Know your epidemic.

Know your environment. Manage expectations.

Stay tuned to the emerging research over the next few years. I expect that PrEP will be implemented – if the data emerges to prove its efficacy – but on a very small scale in very targeted environments, at least until we find an injectable or intermittant variety. The lack of data, costs and complications of PrEP is currently hindering its future. We will, as they say, have to wait and see.

The papers we were given to read state: Because PrEP is unlikely to be 100% effective, it would not replace other proven prevention strategies and would likely be most cost effective when used in combination with current HIV prevention methods including safer sex practices, use of male and female condoms, treatment of STIs, clean needles, circumcision etc. PrEP would not replace any of these strategies but it could be a powerful tool in the fight against AIDS.

Thank you

Thanks to everyone who puts in their time and passion into treatments and prevention measures for HIV. Special thanks Afrah AlDoori for her coordination in getting us all there, and to Georgina Caswell, who was so utterly lovely and helpful, and Jorge Beloqui both brilliant and such marvelous dinner guests! I’m glad that INPUD was invited to take part in discussions about our futures, it seems we are turning a corner and I look forward to our involvement in the future. If PrEP is implemented, the drugs community will most certainly need to be there on the road ahead.

Hi from Switzerland!

The journey to Switzerland to report for INPUD had been a tiring one. After presenting a session in Glasgow at the National Conference on Injecting Drug Use, it was straight back to London and out the door for a flight to Geneva airport. I had been asked by INPUD to attend a consultation staged by the World Health Organisation, to report on a topic I have to admit to being unfamiliar with – ‘PrEP’ – or Pre Exposure Prophylaxis.

My first thoughts were of the HIV vaccine. Many of us may remember hearing of the recent breakthrough in the HIV vaccine trials, news which appeared out of the blue after many years of research of seeming dead ends and disappointments. However, while I was in the right ball park thinking vaccines, this was a very diferent game. PrEP you could say was more like PEP’s (Post Exposure Prophylaxis) newest cousin.

Instead of PEP – and its use as the short sharp shock of HIV treatments (anti retrovirals) for, most commonly, health professionals exposed to the virus via occupational related incidents such as needle stick injuries etc, PrEP is about taking things much further.

It is an experimental HIV prevention strategy that, if proven, would use anti retrovirals (ARVs) to reduce the risk of HIV infection in HIV negative people. Could PrEP, through the ingestion of a single drug (or combination) taken daily, reduce the chance of HIV infection – in HIV negative people? If found to be effective, how would such a prevention approach be rolled out? And to whom? In combination with what other prevention measures? And would HIV negative people even adhere to such a potentially uncomfortable drug regime with no immediately tangible benefit? And what about drug resistance – could we be making a rod for our own backs?

One of the potential advantages of PrEP is that those who are unable to negotiate condom use with their sex partners, would still be able to reduce their risk of infection. People who inject drugs may still be able to protect themselves despite being in higher risk environments such as without access to sterile needles and syringes.

There is however, a worrying lack of data, although current trials are well underway. These are looking at a range of transmission routes in diverse populations such as; Serodiscordant couples (one postive, the other negative); hetrosexual men and women in high prevalence areas; people who inject drugs; gay men and other men who have sex with men.

Yet there is an optimism about PrEP. Despite the fears and concerns of diverting potentially scarce resources away from positive people to negative ones when we still have not achieved the UNAIDS goals of universal access by a long shot, over 20,000 people are currently in PrEP trials, and the data will be emerging over the next few years. If, as hoped the results prove as encouraging as some believe, substantial preparation is needed to effectively scale up and implement such an intervention. In order to avoid unnecessary delays, additional research questions must be asked, and priorities decided upon.

Setting The Stage –

Scientist Kevin O’Reilly (Prevention in the Health Sector) has picked a fairytale setting for the meeting. An hour and a half from Geneva itself, the tiny town of Glion is picture perfect. A rickety little tram ascended up the mountainside from Montreux, taking me to Glion’s only hotel, sitting like a magnificent wedding cake, lodged firmly into the mountainside and overlooking the Swiss Riviera. After being given the key to my room I don’t mind admitting I launched into a mini boogaloo, before throwing myself on the big double bed, my eyes bulging at the view from my very own balcony! So this is how the other half live! After coming from the grey envelope of London, this was nothing short of breathtaking.

But there was no way this was any sort of a holiday; the huge array of complex issues involved in the emerging PrEP discussion was phenomenal, as I realised reading up on the materials I had been sent, en route to Glion this week. And after the first day of discussions, it was proving a very complex task with a massive amount of variables, and very little data to base decisions on.

The Cast.

It was great to meet up with my INPUD colleague Jason Farrell, who had trekked over from Amsterdam and members will be pleased to know he was both reflective and vocal during the ensuing consultation, raising the issues that related to our using community with clarity and emotion. Mixing the personal with the practical is often what is missing at meetings where so much is about data and health systems, and it was one of Jasons personal experiences that brought a touch of reality back into discussions. Which is, after all, why we are here. To ensure the discussions and hopes for PrEP, encompass the reality of peoples lives, in particular, for Jason and myself representing INPUD in relation to people who inject drugs. We want to ensure any guidelines created by WHO on PrEP, take user issues into account, particularly since 2,400 thai people who inject drugs (PUDs) are due to emerge from a trial in 2010, and being a government endorsed programme it is possible any rolling out of PrEP, may continue there. By WHO and UNAIDS collaborating on this issue and bringing together civil society, trialists, academics, investors, researchers, statisticians, and scientists to who PrEP is pertinent, discussion will focus on the research needed to conduct and prepare for implentation of PrEP, and what issues will have the highest priority?

Alas, it is now late and I am about to turn out the light and snuggle up in the wedding cakes puffball of a bed, to blog again tomorrow on the rest of todays discussion as we move past setting the scene and towards hearing more from the cast, to thinking about the strands involved in the story ahead.

Til tomorrow night, Bon soir!

In anii ‘90, o melodie celebra a formatiei “Sarmalele Reci” spunea ca ” Tara te vrea prost!”.
Are grija de asta guvernul Boc.
Tensiunea va face vaj-vaj in urechi..

I numeri

From the wild and wacky world of high school cheerleading comes this head-scratcher.

Officials at Staples High School in Westport, Conn., recently put an end to the school tradition of cake baking at the football team’s weekly pasta dinner.

As the story goes, the Staples High football moms host a pasta dinner for the football team every week. The Staples High cheerleaders also attend the dinner, and they bring dessert for the meal. As part of the tradition, the cheerleaders bake a cake for one of the senior football players every week.

Turns out, this practice is banned.

We’re still trying to figure it out, too. So we’ll let The Hour explain:

Every week, each of the approximately 20 girls made a cake for a senior football player at the weekly Thursday pasta dinner, an optional practice, but it turns out their coach didn’t know baking had been banned by Superintendent Elliott Landon.

“Especially in the last four years we’ve had a succession of cheerleading coaches so I’m presuming the new one this year didn’t know about the prohibition,” said (Staples principal John) Dodig, who said he notified the cheerleading coach through the school athletic director after becoming aware the Staples student newspaper “Inklings” was running a story on the practice. Dodig said he always reviews Inklings articles that concern him for fact-checking purposes.

“If none of that had happened, I’d feel the same way (about the ban),” said Dodig. “I don’t understand after the progress we’ve made in the last 50 years with women’s rights and given that cheerleading is a varsity athletic team (how this can be perceived as a good idea).”

One freshman cheerleader in the Inklings story that ran Friday, Olivia Stanley, said she didn’t know that cheerleaders baked for their football players, but the story said she had no problem with it.

Her mother, however, called it “sexist.”

What’s your take? Is cake baking for football players a sexist practice, or is the school overstepping its bounds?

There are a number of ways to rank brand values. One of the most important is the level at which a brand contributes to the market value of a public company.

24/7 Wall St. asked Corebrand, the brand research and consulting firm, to look at the top 100 brands based their contribution to market capitalizaton. Using this method, the hardest working brand was Hershey (NYSE:HSY), followed by Coca-Cola (NYSE:KO) and Harley-Davidson (NYSE:HOG)

Corebrand described the process briefly to 24/7 Wall. St.

24/7 Wall St.: Corebard often refers to the brands on this list as the”hardest working brands”. How did you come to that description?

Corebrand: There are a lot of people measuring and examining the “strongest brands” or the “most valuable brands”. Our opinion is that examining one without the other is somewhat meaningless. How “strong” a brand is nice to know but not very relevant unless you understand how that strength benefits business. Similarly, “value” is little more than a measure of corporate size unless you understand the drivers of that value and how to influence it. By examining the strength of the brand and it’s contribution to total market value, we can help companies and their leadership manage that strength and value over time.

24/7 Wall St.: Is there any advantage or disadvantage to having a brand value be a very large percentage of market cap in the present and as an indication of a company’s future performance?

Corebrand: The brand will need to be in balance with the rest of the company’s assets. A company should strive to have it’s brand strong enough to fend off competitors or changing market conditions but not so strong that it becomes overly dependent on the brand as a single driver of value. If a company can achieve and maintain its appropriate maximum strength without becoming over-dependent, it will see greater returns in bull markets and retain greater value in bear markets.

Methodology: CoreBrand tracks 800 of the world’s best corporate brands and maintains the largest continuous brand benchmark tracking system.

Each year, on a rolling basis, CoreBrand conducts 8,000 telephone interviews among business leaders to measure their perceptions of some of the world’s best corporate brands. Respondents are business decision-makers from the top 20% of U.S. businesses.

This senior business audience (VP level and above) represents the investment community, potential business partners, and business customers across 49 key industries. 400 respondents rate each company per year; 800 companies are measured each year. Our reports are updated on a quarterly basis to reflect any subtle changes.

CoreBrand collects financial performance data and communications investment information to understand the support behind and impact of these brands. These corporate brand strength ratings, as well as a company’s financial data are used in CoreBrand’s statistical model to determine the percentage of market capitalization that is directly derived from the corporate brand. Once that percentage is calculated, a dollar value is assigned to the corporate brand.

The percentage of market capitalization, attributable to the corporate brand. The percentage is then translated into a dollar value, based on the current market capitalization. The analysis is examined over time, to determine if the corporate brand is a growing or declining asset.

Armado, con droga y con placa

    * Luis Gerardo Andrade

TIJUANA, Baja California(PH)

I was going to leave announcing this a little longer, but the Mindless Ones have announced their new

I was going to leave announcing this a little longer, but the Mindless Ones have announced their new format and I didn’t want to look like I’m copying them – or indeed Alan Moore, who is also doing something similar to this…

For about a month now I’ve been planning a new colour glossy POD magazine, which I will be editing, called PEP! The first issue will, all being well, come out before Xmas, and will be a mixture of political comment, short fiction, entertainment reviews and science journalism – a similar mix of content to what you find on this site, but by a variety of writers. There was also going to be a comics section, and I actually asked the Mindless Ones to contribute to this, but since they’re doing their own thing my comics posts will probably stay on here rather than competing with their ‘zine.

Content is far from finalised, obviously, but provisional contributors to the first issue include Pillock, Alex Wilcock, Millennium Elephant, Holly, Sean Witzke and Debi Linton, as well as myself, and possible subjects include a science column, a piece on Margaret Atwood, a piece on The Waltons (possibly the same as the previous piece) and a discussion of Doctor Who continuity. Issue 1 should be out around Christmas, and will be 40 pages for $8.40 in print (I’ll probably release a free PDF version a month or so later).

In other news, my temporary writer’s block has gone, and so I’m about to start a second interlinked series of posts, a la my Hyperposts. A preliminary schedule for next week’s posting is:
Tomorrow – DARKSEID! (Authority post 1 – at the request of Pillock)
Tuesday – linkblog only as off to see Richard Herring live
Wednesday – A Hard Day’s Night full review (getting back to my Beatles posts)
Thursday – Cerebus (Authority post 2)
Friday – Smile 2004 vs Smile 1967 (Authority post 3)
Saturday – And Another Thing… (which I’m going to write about without having read it – Authority post 4)
