¿Estamos mal, o no?

5 F’s of Social Media Over a few posts I will highlight a number of case studies highlighting

5 F’s of Social Media

Over a few posts I will highlight a number of case studies highlighting examples where brands have successfully implemented a social media concept. To help illustrate the cases I may also identify a couple of the social media disasters. A great recent example is the DSGi Facebook group where employees openly criticised customers.

However in this post I would like to highlight something that I call the 5 F’s of social media. Don’t worry I’m not going to teach 5 new profanities beginning with the letter F. Us marketeers like simple number-letter concepts to help add context to a piece of theory (4 P’s of Marketing). This will also help me frame the case studies in future posts.

My 5 F’s theory does exactly that. It highlights 5 distinct criteria – that if all are met, I believe most social media campaigns or activity will succeed. Each campaign doesn’t necessarily have to hit all the buttons and success could also be achieved by simply turning up the volume on one or two of the areas.

Familiarity

To make any social media/participative marketing campaign a success brands really need to understand their target audience and the objectives of engaging with them. If you can really get to grips with who your audience is and what they want then you will gain a genuine connection. With this connection the community or audience should do your work for you, participate and help towards growing the campaign.

The best method to underline the importance of this particular F is when people get it wrong. Pepsi’s recent campaign “helping men pull girls” which helped alienate half their audience (namely women). They obviously had great intentions to undertake something cool and exciting on social media utilising app technology – however it seems to be a classic case of letting the technology rule the idea.

Even if your intention isn’t to run a ‘cool’ participative marketing campaign but to have a presence within social media, you still need to be familiar with your target audience. Remove the word media from social media and you have social. People using these channels generally do so to communicate with each other. They align themselves with likeminded people and as a consequence, generally don’t like companies just plying them with promotional messages. Brands need to earn trust and the right to have a place talking to people via social. You need to be familiar to know what messages people want to receive, above all you must be open enough to reflect the audience wishes and feedback.

Fortune

Fortune covers two angles. Participative marketing campaigns can be amplified if brands put budget behind them. Social is not free. You need to make the same investment in those campaigns as you would any other. Don’t be so blinkered to imagine all promotion has to take place through social media. People engaging with social media also consumer other media, the Obama campaign perfectly illustrates. The campaign lived within social media, utilising strengths of various platforms such as Twitter and Facebook, however substantial investment was made in traditional channels to support this activity.

That being said, the investment doesn’t necessarily need to be in promotional activity. Participative marketing can benefit from having a great (relevant) payoff for the participants. A prize or even an ongoing cash amount for people submitting entries (Walkers – Do Us a Flavour). This incentivises participants to think in detail about their response or become more creative. The lure of some ‘fortune’ will also help spread word of mouth associated with your campaigns.

Fame

In 1968, Andy Warhol once famously created the phrase, “In the future, everyone will be world-famous for 15 minutes.” This seems to be the undertone for the society we currently live in. With the rise of reality TV shows and YouTube heroes, everybody does have their opportunity and indeed millions are positively striving for their shot at fame. Just look at some of the hopefuls on XFactor.

With this in mind, if you can offer the chance of fame as part of your social media strategy, no matter how small, their is a greater chance of success. As with the familiarity section, the accolade has to be in tune with your audience. There is no point providing the platform to be an Exhibitor in the Tate to a group of stereotypical football fans. Neither would a DJ contest be of any interest to a group of traditional BBC Radio 4 listeners.

If you get it right, the element of fame can really engage with your audience. Even if the fame is only restricted to a particular social network. The YouTube phenonomen is a classic example of this.

Fun

As with most activity online, making it fun is a key consideration. If you can entertain your audience you are more likely to gain the talkability factor. A sense of fun adds an element of personality to a brand. This does not necessarily mean the concept has to be funny, more just fun, engaging and entertaining to the audience.

Again, being in-tune with your audience is crucial.

Forwardability

If you have one or all the of the above elements cracked to a good level then you should have produced activity that has the potential to be forwarded. Your presence needs to be in peoples’ e-mail boxes. On their phones and referenced on their individual social media profiles. Your need to be so current to the audience and reflect what they want that they are proud to be associated with the brand. The audience will do the work for you.

Remember, get it wrong and they are just as likely to forward to their friends but paint a very negative and potentially damaging response.

The package

So this was an initial attempt at placing some theory behind social and participation marketing. This is by no means exhaustive and I will hopefully come back from time to time to refine the concept of the 5 F’s. I will also be looking at some case studies to critique and test my theory of the 5 F’s, so if you have any candidate campaigns or brands, please feel free to contact me.

Yesterday was Chicken Dipper day. My fry daddy employment life requires at least one day every couple of weeks I do nothing but fry double-breaded, peppered chicken parts (supposedly breast tenderloin). Well, there are still the noobes who ask for a burger or some kind of non-fried chicken sandwich and I’m obliged to serve them. For most of the day I’m just frying my 80 pounds of Dippers. We’ve gone through 120 pounds on busy days, but the cafe hasn’t been that in-the-weeds for some time. Yup, I’m the fried chicken merchant of death. Big plates of chicken, curly fries and heart disease. All cooked in something labelled “Mel-Fry” which doesn’t make me feel better about the process. The redeeming thing, I suppose, is that I serve Dipper meals primarily to stressed out nurses. Anything I can do to give the staff comfort food and calm them down a little bit is reassuring. Of course, they wash the whole mess down with gallons of Mountain Dew, starting the whole stress cycle again. Many reside in an over worked, 40/40 universe-40 pounds overweight and 40+ years old. I’m not judging, living in a 36/25 club myself. When the administration decides to throw out the four-barrel fryer, I’ll gladly help them plan some more nutritionally sound alternatives (even if it costs me the job).

There is hope. My employer may be slow in getting rid of the Dippers, but in the next couple of weeks we’ll start selling the old school, 8 oz. sized Coke bottles. Coca Cola, when it first appeared in the contoured container, came in a 6 1/2 oz. bottle. The 12 oz. steel can appeared in 1960. The company has announced that by next spring they’ll make available a commercial 9 oz. can for better portion control and my hope is that we carry that too. This may be too little, too late. In the 1950’s Pepsi Cola began its war to put larger amounts of soda on shelves at cheaper prices to the consumer. Coke followed during the sixties and by the mid ’70’s two (and three) liter bottles appeared. Coke’s 9 oz. can movement has nothing to do with health, no matter what statement they put forward. This is just branding another size of sugary drink for the crowded market place. No redemption for a company that has been offering soda in six packs since the dawn of the last century. Still, it’s a start. Especially when Pepsi recently started selling Tall Boys, the 16 oz. beer-sized cans. At a time when consumers are pushed toward more-lots more high fructose corn syrup, lots more food coloring-at least Coke had the sense to offer some alternatives. It’s not healthy to pour the stuff down one’s gullet, but, at the very least, we can do so in single servings.

The new administrator I work for is a proselytizer in the cause of fresh food. The frying of hundreds of pounds of Dippers each month will go away at his direction in the near future. We’ll see what happens to the sugary soda pop. Brave new world for fry cooks, either way.

Ya know,… I’m a pretty eclectic guy. I like lots of stuff. For instance, I like things like… cheeseburgers, Pepsi-Cola, the St. Louis Cardinals, Lucha Libre, comic books, WWII airplanes, American history, classic literature, Jazz, coffee, big country breakfasts, classic movies, 1940’s American culture, drawing, writing, and studying theology. Just to name a few…

As I said,… I like lots of stuff. Then again, I like stuff lots as well.

Therein, comes a problem.

All too often, things we like are put before God. Whether it be a TV show keeping you from reading your Bible, to Deer Season causing you to miss church, to text messaging keeping you from your prayer time… We’re all susceptible to things of the world taking priority to the things of God.

4Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.

5Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; -Exodus 20:4-5

While this may sound like it was directed toward the culture of the time, with their golden calves and such, it was meant every bit as much for us. In the several thousand years of history since God handed down the Ten Commandments,… cultures haven’t changed all that much.

While, gone are the days of false gods made of precious metals (at least in the majority of American society), we’ve cast them away only to replace them with celebrities, sports, technology, jobs, sex, cars, material possessions, and all forms of entertainment. Not one of these are less offensive to the Lord than a calf hewn in gold.

As a Christian, it’s of the utmost importance to do the following…

1- Pray: Not just to say grace at dinner or a “Now I lay me…” at bed time.

17Pray without ceasing. -1 Thessalonians 5:17

2- Read your Bible daily: There is no greater weapon against sin than the Word of God.

It is also dire that you know Scripture when someone approaches you with a question regarding your faith. Souls are not led to Christ with laziness.

We cannot save a person on our own, but we may well be the tool God uses to point them to Him.

3- Worship with fellow Believers: Many can argue the value of a traditional church. Yet, in Scripture we are told…

25Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching. -Hebrews 10:25

Attending a worship service with fellow Believers, be it in a traditional church building or in someone’s home, is consequential in building each other up in the love of Christ. There is certainly strength in numbers…

Putting other things before these can be stumbling blocks, and once you fall, it’s hard to get up again.

20Assemble yourselves and come; draw near together, ye that are escaped of the nations: they have no knowledge that set up the wood of their graven image, and pray unto a god that cannot save. -Isaiah: 45:20

Consider YOUR idols, and cast them down! Nothing this world has to offer is so great as to pay for it in the world to come.

22Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,

23And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.

24Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:

25Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen. -Romans 1:22-25

I wrote a post before about Coca-Cola and Pepsi in Japan offering unusual flavors such as “Green Tea Coke”, “Cucumber Pepsi”, and “Shiso Pepsi”.
(Click here to read that post).

Pepsi Japan will be offering their latest flavor starting on Tuesday, 20 October (2009)….「ペプシあずき」 (“Pepsi Azuki“).

<img class="size-medium wp-image-3337" title="azuki-ad" src="http://tokyo5.wordpress.com/files/2009/10/azuki-ad.jpg?w=300" alt="Pepsi Japan's ad for "Pepsi Azuki". On sale (in Japan) starting 20 October (2009) for a limited time.

The ad says 「和風コーラ・新登場」 (“Japanese style cola. A new appearance.”).

「小豆」 (Azuki) is a popular red bean in Japan that is often eaten in a sweetened paste form.
It’s quite good. But, though I like Shiso, I didn’t think much of Shiso Pepsi…so I have my doubts about “Pepsi Azuki“.

Sheu’s bday!!!

i woke up around 6.30am. was out on the beach at 7am. watched the sunrise. love it love it love it. we girls tried to wake the guys up but they didnt want to so we just left them. at 9am we waited for the snorkeling trip at 9.30am. it was so funny. Sunglasses dude, one of the guys in charge of the snorkeling was angry that the guys didnt wanna go. coz it was a trip to the marine park. and we had to pay like RM5 just to get into Redang neway. so its like wasting the ticket to the marine park. when we got to the park (that sunken ship is still there!) the other guide took us around. Amir. he was so sweet la. he was asking if we could swim n all. then he took us under the jetty where there was a moray eel hiding at the bottom. it refused to come out so he took us to this HUGE coral further out where this HUUUUUGGGGEEEE moray eel lived. i swear it was HUGE. they were trying to lure it out with dead fish. and one of the other guides threw a fish at Amir. IT HIT MY CHEEK. i was so pissed. newayyyy, one of the other guides managed to pull the whole eel out. u could hear ppl screaming thru their snorkels. it was hilarious. n so cool.

we got back to the resort at around 12pm. lunch time. guys FINALLY woke up when i went to call them. after lunch we all went to the beach. then at 2.30pm, us girls went on the other snorkeling trip. it was at Pulau Lima. Amir was so cute. he was sitting at the top of the boat n he was asking us to go join him. hehe. the snorkeling was nice. i didnt have ne bread with me this time tho. but we saw Nemo!!! and family!! it was so cute. and saw this HUGE fish too! it was the size of a car wheel.

back at the resort just in time for tea. then we all hung out at the beach. played beach volleyball i couldnt serve the first few times. then finally sort of got the hang of it. i still suck tho. n my arms were killing me even a few days after. had to go back to the resort for dinner. after dinner we went walking on the beach. n there was a club on the beach! it was so cool. we had a few drinks (coke :p) nearby first tho. then we stood outside the club. dancing/talking/bumming.

after the club shut down we played Pepsi Cola on the beach childhood game man. its whr u stand in a circle and attempt to jump onto another person’s feet. those that get stepped on are eliminated. last one standing wins. finally went back to the resort. i went to sleep once we got back tho. so damn tired. the rest went to the guys’ room to chill.

Waaaah FDA says a frog or toad was in man’s Diet Pepsi! The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says a test conducted and shows that either a frog or a toad was in a Florida man’s soda can, but it’s not clear how the frog or the toad got in there.

In a report on a local tv channel, I heard the following:

“The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) had confirmed that there was remains of an animal were in Fred Denegri’s can of Diet Pepsi in can. Denegri openned the Pepsi can last July 23 as he was grilling for a dinner in Ormond Beach. He first thought that the little animal was a ‘Mouse’ rodent.”

Fred Denegri further claims, he’s certain that the little animal was in the can before he opened it.

However, Jeff Dahncke a Pepsi spokesman, says their company is aware of having some testing standards on its manufacturing process. And Dahncke assures public that their system undergoes good speed of production lines and undergoes more rigorous quality control, does very impossible for a frog or toad to get into the can of soda.

At the turn of the twentieth century, Caleb Bradham operated a drug store in the historic city of Ne

At the turn of the twentieth century, Caleb Bradham operated a drug store in the historic city of New Bern, North Carolina, the second oldest town in the state and the former capital of North Carolina. He had graduated from the University of North Carolina and attended the medical school of the University of Maryland in College Park until the failure of his father’s business forced him to abandon his studies. He opened the Bradham Drug Company about a year later, in 1892.

In those days, drug stores frequently featured a “soda fountain,” a counter where shoppers could purchase a cold drink to slake their thirst. The more skillful operators of these soda fountains learned that creativity and showmanship could enhance their business. Children and their parents were fascinated as the “soda jerk” would put on an entertaining show of assembling their concoctions; they were the precursors of the flashy bartenders of the kind celebrated in the Tom Cruise movie Cocktail.

The fountain owners would spend their spare time experimenting with different recipes in the search to create a more appetizing and popular beverage blend. And so it was on 28 August 1898 that Caleb Bradham perfected a recipe that combined kola oil extract, vanilla, and what he listed as “rare oils” into a soft drink that soon became the talk of the town.

He originally called it, rather prosaically, “Brad’s Drink,” but soon changed the name to add a little more sizzle. Bradham believed that the beverage acted as a digestive aid, simulating the action of the pepsin enzyme. Combining that word with the name of one of the principal ingredients, he fashioned the new name for the product: Pepsi-Cola.

(There’s a local legend in New Bern that Bradham was divinely inspired to name the drink by scrambling the letters of the church that was in sight of his store window, an Episcopal house of worship—I report, you decide.)

On Christmas Eve of 1902, the Pepsi-Cola Company was incorporated in the state of North Carolina. Bradham moved the beverage operation out of his drug store into a separate facility nearby. In 1905 he expanded the business, which to that point had retailed only the syrup, selling six-ounce bottles of the finished product. He awarded franchises to several North Carolina bottling enterprises, and the Pepsi-Cola brand became recognized outside of New Bern.

The business expanded steadily, and before long Bradham had franchised Pepsi-Cola operations in 24 of the 48 states. A genuine American small-business success story had blossomed. But, sadly, this story did not have a particularly happy ending for Caleb Bradham.

Due to the after-effects of World War I and, subsequently, the Great Depression, the wholesale price of sugar varied wildly. Prior to the Great War, sugar sold for three cents a pound; by the beginning of the 1930’s it had risen to 28 cents. Bradham speculated that the price would continue to rise, and purchased a massive quantity of sugar at that price. But old Caleb’s luck didn’t hold out. Shortly after he made his purchase, the price of sugar nose-dived. In 1931, the Pepsi-Cola Company filed for bankruptcy. Caleb Bradham returned to operating his New Bern pharmacy. He died less than three years later.

Pepsi would go bankrupt yet again before being acquired by the Loff Company, a candy manufacturer that operated a chain of retail outlets featuring soda fountains. The owner, Charles Guth, became annoyed that the Coca-Cola Company would not give him a discount on the purchase of syrup and began retailing Pepsi in his soda fountains. He introduced the 12-ounce bottle and marketed it for the same five-cent price Coke sold their six-ounce bottles.

And the rest is history.

I saw this sign the other day at the cash register at the Pep Boys not far from my house: I almost hollered when I saw this… I didn&t know Black folks used the word &tool&. Guess they don&t think so highly of Kobe Bryant in this …

Pep Boys will soon pocket a large chunk of cash, now that it has committed to a sale-leaseback transaction involving 34 properties. The Philadelphia-based automotive retail and service chain will take away $166.2 million from the deal. …

This image tracks the evolution of the Coke and Pepsi logos over time.

Coke got it right the first time. I’m not so sure Pepsi ever got it right.

Thanks to RJay for passing this along to me.
