Oh, the power. I miss the power, the power of negatives, those thin strips of transparent film, reverse photographs where everyone in my family wore blackface. The moment the camera shop’s fat, rectangular envelope of developed film touched my palm, a rush of security and superiority filled me. As long as I had the negatives safely in hand, the images were mine, all mine.

People used to pay big money to get their hands on the negatives, the smoking gun evidence of an affair, a drug deal, or a bad hair day. The familiar envelopes could be tucked away neatly and securely in a drawer or safe deposit box. Everyone slept better knowing exactly where the photos and negatives lived.

Not any more. With camera phones and digital cameras, negatives have become irrelevant and photos can spread on the internet like wild fire. Half of the time I’m not sure where my photos are. Still on the camera or phone? On my thumb drive? On my laptop? On the media drive? Uploaded to Facebook? On a billboard in India? All of the above?

The power has shifted from owning photos and negatives to stealing photos. It’s not the negatives that you need to cling to like Gollum’s ring, it’s the precious photos themselves. Because really, it’s our very identities that are now up for grabs. Once a digital photo is released into the world, both devious and clueless minds can play all kinds of tricks with them.

My friend Michael recently emailed me a link to an Oakland non-profit’s new brochure “Putting the East Bay to Work—Sustainable Jobs for the Underemployed.” Smack-dab on the cover front and center is a photo of him on the phone, representing the underemployed customer service rep. He is surrounded by warehouse, lab, factory, and construction workers. The only problem is that Michael has held Director and VP positions for several years! He doesn’t even remember the photo being taken, much less signing a release form for them to use the photo. He had temped for the organization for a couple of days or weeks several years earlier. Someone must have thought he was cute, snapped a picture, and when it came time to design the handbook cover, picked it out of the photo morgue. Sure, at the time the photo was taken he was underemployed. Perhaps it just took more than five years for the agency to get around to finishing their handbook. But now his image is being used to represent a person that is not him.

He’s more amused by the whole situation than outraged. It’s a fairly harmless use of his photo. Not so much with another photo theft. My gay male friend X recently fell in love with man Y who was going through a tumultuous breakup with man Z. All three run in the same circles and Z was not happy that X got Y instead of him. So Z posted a personals ad on Craigslist’s Men4Men section, pretending to be my friend X. He included half a dozen photos of X, including a couple of close-ups of X’s face that he had pulled from a community website. He threw in a photo of a naked butt, which was not of X because X doesn’t post nude photos of himself online.

The ad contained a fairly accurate description of X’s age, height and weight, but also went into graphic detail about what X was supposedly looking for in terms of a sexual hookup(s). I think the ad could have been much worse. Z could have included hardcore photos of orifices and sexual acts alongside those of X’s face. It was bad enough that the ad included misspellings and dumb logic, saying he had to be discreet, and yet there were photos of his face. It made my friend sound like an idiot, let alone a slut.

Luckily with Craigslist, ads come and go so quickly that the imposter ad was soon buried in a pile of new postings. My friend decided to just let the ad and Z’s jealousy fizzle out instead of notifying the police or filing a complaint with the website.

Celebrities have long had their photos used and abused by tabloid magazines and now by online tabloid personalities like Perez Hilton who made his name by defacing celebrity photos. Some celebrities have had success with lawsuits against tabloids’ unauthorized use of photos, but complaints of high tech identity abuse have gone nowhere, especially for the little people. Judge Judy, while not exactly the pinnacle of judicial precedence, ruled that a male defendant had no grounds against the website hotghettomess.com. The site had found a photo of him online and used it as an example of a “hot ghetto mess” rather than the preferred “not ghetto mess.” He was pissed because he’s a college student, not a gang banger. But Judge Judy ruled that because the defendant had posted the photo online somewhere, it was public domain and he could not claim damages.

It’s gotten to the point where if you’re sharing photos online of a vacation, wedding or family gathering, you have to post them with a secure, password-protected service like http://www.keepandshare.com/ or Facebook, but in both of these cases, it all depends on whether you can trust your online friends. Hide Photos is a software product that can encrypt your digital photos. (Anyone have experience with any other secure photo-sharing sites?)

My former boss’s family did not use such a service. My tech-savvy administrative assistant on a former job googled the name of our very private and discreet project manager and found a public website created by his daughter-in-law. There were over a dozen photos of a family birthday party at his house, so we got a sense of his lifestyle plus saw photos of his son, his daughter, his wife. It made me uncomfortable to invade his privacy this way, but there it was.

The pop group No Doubt recently filed a lawsuit against Activision about how the group’s members are used in the new video game Band Hero. Players can use a character-manipulation feature and make the band’s avatars perform songs popularized by other bands. Activision is claiming that the band agreed to all features of the software and that it may not be possible to turn that feature off for the band anyway. Whatever the result of the lawsuit, the damage to their images is done. I can’t see that making Gwen Stefani sing “Kung Fu Fighting” compared to her own songs is that big a difference or tragedy, but it’s logical for the band to expect that No Doubt avatars would only be performing No Doubt songs. She should be grateful that you can’t make her sing any of the songs from her husband Gavin Rossdale’s solo album!

I could have told No Doubt that most technology and online agreements are about giving away the rights of your images. A friend sent out a cool Halloween e-card from jibjab.com. Many of their e-cards are customizable where you upload personal photos or videos that are incorporated into the card’s design. Of course, the best cards are for members only so I started to sign-up for the site to send out some birthday cards. Once I read their privacy policies, I cancelled the registration. The terms and conditions read in part:

If User chooses not to have his/her content, picture, video, or any other profile information about themselves viewable by a global audience, User should not use the JibJab Sites and JibJab Services.

User hereby grants to JibJab a worldwide, royalty-free, non-exclusive license to use: (i) User’s name(s), photograph and/or likeness(es) and biographical materials; and (ii) any other individual’s name, photograph and/or likeness and biographical materials, where such other individual appears in the User Materials, in connection with the distribution, exploitation, promotion, marketing and advertising of the User Materials, as described hereunder, during the Term.

At least they are upfront about the possibility of your images being exploited, whether by yourself or by others, but it gave me pause. I’m perhaps overly cautious. I don’t like having other people take my picture, partly because of vanity—if the photo doesn’t turn out well, I want to have control over who sees it online. Hence, most of my profile photos on Facebook, etc. are self-portraits.

My brother was concerned about my 18-year-old niece posting photos on Facebook that show her partying or being too sexy.  To demonstrate to her the dangers of doing so, I thought of taking the photo of her in her Lady Gaga Halloween costume and PhotoShop-ing it to turn her into an obese Lady Goo-Goo Gai-Pan. Besides being lame, I ran the risk of her retaliating by taking a photo of me and doing something like this:

On the surface, it might not appear that I’m setting the greatest example with “Oh Dave Now” in which I have shared and will share very personal experiences and am posting my childhood photos. But my purpose with “Oh Dave Now” is to deliberately paint a candid personal portrait. Once I decide to post something personal, I can’t care about who reads it. Still, because of the lack of control of where it goes from here, I certainly hold back from revealing some information about myself. I deliberately restrict my posts to my experiences, in order to respect the privacy of those close to me. I do not always give the names of family members and friends who are part of my experience. I will only use their photos with their permission.

I believe that most people, like myself, go by the Golden Rule and don’t misuse others’ photos because they don’t want their own photos to be misused. If that doesn’t make you feel secure enough, then the rule is don’t post online what you wouldn’t want your employer to see or a newspaper to print. With photos, the power has always been, even with the old negatives, in keeping them close at hand. If I were to get really serious about this, I think I would keep a dedicated thumb drive or photo card in a safe deposit box.

Some African and Caribbean cultures believe that when a person’s photo is taken with a camera, they lose a part of their soul. In the digital age, let’s agree that it’s the one who steals and misuses someone else’s photos whose soul is lost.

That means you, Perez.

(This was originally written in April, 2009, but in light of the newest scandal involving Carrie Prejean, I think it fitting to publish it again. Let the tree be judged by its fruit.)

A woman stands nearly naked before many spectators, so that a homosexual, among others, can judge her “beauty” by the world’s false standards. She then says homosexual marriage is wrong. My sister in Christ? Not necessarily—let’s judge righteous judgment.

Since when do Christians go to the world to parade their dying flesh about on a stage, encouraging men to lust, and young women to covet, admire, and imitate what is evil?

Since when do whorish women become the heroes of Christendom?

Since when do we applaud and congratulate women—who are presently and unashamedly disobeying God’s will for women—for “defending the faith,” rather than rebuking them in love, and showing them the things that please the Father?

Has the church of Jesus Christ sunk so low? Is there no discernible difference between what is good and evil anymore? “Her priests have violated my law, and have profaned mine holy things: they have put no difference between the holy and profane, neither have they shewed difference between the unclean and the clean…” (Ezekiel 2:26)

Is Carrie Prejean a defender of the faith? Well, that depends. Are we talking about the faith of Jesus? Or some other faith that is rooted in tradition and personal opinion? Here are Carrie’s words:

“Well, I think it’s *great* that Americans are able to choose one or the other. We live in a land where you can choose same-sex marriage or opposite marriage. And you know what, in my country, in my family, I *think* that I believe that a marriage should be between a man and a woman. No offense to anyone out there, but that’s how I was raised, and that’s how I think it should be between a man and a woman.”

So according to Carrie, it’s just wonderful that Americans get to choose if they want to marry the same sex or the opposite sex! And she means no offense, but she was RAISED to believe marriage is between a man and a woman.

Let me remind those who love God’s Word that homosexuality is not something we “can choose” or not choose without consequence. It is a judgment of insanity sent by God on those who worship the created being (like those who watch beauty pageants, for example) more than the Creator (Romans 1). It is also a one way ticket to damnation (I Cor. 6:9-10) unless the homosexual repents and turns to Jesus Christ in faith.

Any good Muslim, Jehovah’s Witness, or Catholic could have given the answer Carrie gave!

Carrie was apparently raised to believe in biblical marriage, but not raised to believe in biblical modesty. Her traditional Christianity allows her to cherry pick her truths according to her own desires. Her opinion is that marriage should be between a man and a woman. Her opinion is also (apparently) that women who profess to be Christ’s do not have to turn away from the sin of immorality, and cover their bodies modestly as befits a Christian. She has apparently decided to avoid these Scriptures:

“In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array; But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works.” (I Tim. 2:9-10)

Too bad the deceived are so busy giving this misguided woman applause, and not busy helping her to see the error of her ways. It’s pretty hard to stand up for Jesus with no clothes on, ladies. Get with Jesus a little while, and He will make this very plain to you.

A harlot is known by her dress, which is worn to purposely ensnare men (Proverbs 7:10). So please spare me the “people have differing views of what modesty is” line, which is an unacceptable excuse being used to justify the wicked. Please don’t write me and tell me that bikinis are acceptable public clothing for Christian women, unless you are willing to wear your underwear to church this Sunday or to your next Bible study. The presence of water does not baptize harlotry and make it acceptable! Even in cultures that instinctively wear more clothing than Americans, a harlot is known by her choice of clothing. Also, please notice in Proverbs chapter 7, that the harlot can be very religious and have a “form” of godliness; but by her dressing to entice unstable souls, she proves herself a spiritual murderer—”yea, many strong men have been slain by her.” If the strong men need beware, what will happen to the weak men?

As a Christian, our first commandment is to love God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength. Pretty hard to do while we are wowing the crowds with our flesh, isn’t it? My friends, NO FLESH should glory in His presence! (I Cor. 1:29) That’s pretty clear, isn’t it? We are either sowing to please our flesh, or sowing to please the Spirit. We are not doing both at the same time.

The second commandment is to love our neighbor as ourselves. Are we (ladies) loving men when we strut about half covered in front of them? Are we not concerned about their eternal souls? Are we not concerned about our own? Are we concerned about their wives and their daughters? Or are we only concerned with climbing some ladder of vain self-importance in the eyes of this idolatrous world? Do we think we can play the harlot and escape the wrath of God?

There is a reason God COVERED Adam and Eve’s nakedness when they became sinners. There is a reason we will not return to the “naked state” even in heaven. We will be fully clothed. There is a reason He threatened idolatrous Israel with “uncovering her nakedness.” There is a reason that many pagan tribes that turn to Christ suddenly decide to wear clothes. And there is a reason Americans, who run after idols—like “beauty” queens—have a love affair with nakedness. And there is a reason the professing church doesn’t rebuke this wickedness, but instead praises it, displaying its own hypocrisy for all the world to see. She knows not that she is “wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked;” and that she needs to go to Jesus to receive “white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear.” (Rev. 3:17-18)

I can no more commend Carrie Prejean for standing by her opinion, than I can commend Perez Hilton for standing by his. To do so would be hypocritical. The only opinion that matters is God’s “opinion.” Woe is me if I train my children to reject homosexuality, but to at the same time embrace the immoral behavior of the religious prostitute!

Please hear me: I am not trying to hurt Carrie Prejean. IF she wants to follow Christ, let her “that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity.” (2 Tim. 2:19) Let her ask the LORD how she can make her body a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to Him. Let her seek out older women of faith who will show her a more excellent way. Let them teach her not to glory in her flesh, which is a fading flower, but to “let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.” (I Pet. 3:4)

I lay the blame for this hypocrisy at the feet of the church, which has no discernment to see that this woman is hell-bound unless she repents of her idolatry and wanton, fleshly ways. Dare we make a hero out of a person who is so blindly leading others into sin? All this little charade between Carrie and Perez does is further blur the line between good and evil. Homosexuality=Bad, Promiscuity=OK? NO! Both ways lead to death!

Carrie Prejean has become a facebook hero for her stand against homosexuality. I have an unsaved close relative who also believes men should not marry men. Does this make him a hero? No, my friends. The unsaved judge unrighteous judgment. They have their OWN standard of right and wrong. They might think pornography is OK, but rape is wrong. They think drunkenness is OK, but getting high on drugs is wrong. And they think homosexuality is wrong, but immodesty and lifting oneself up as an idol to be worshiped by lust-driven crowds is OK.

If Carrie wants to be taken seriously as a Christian, she needs to obey Christ and his Word by turning from her OWN wickedness, dressing herself as befits a woman professing godliness, and standing up for what GOD thinks, ACROSS THE BOARD.

And if the church wants to be taken seriously by people like Perez Hilton, it needs to stop being so hypocritical and blind. It needs to go to Jesus for some eye medicine. It also needs to stop strengthening the hands of those who do evil, like Carrie Prejean, so that she will repent and follow after righteousness.

“I have seen also in the prophets of Jerusalem an horrible thing: they commit adultery, and walk in lies: they strengthen also the hands of evildoers, that none doth return from his wickedness; they are all of them unto me as Sodom, and the inhabitants thereof as Gomorrah.” Jeremiah 23:14

“But now I have written unto you not to keep company, if any man that is called a brother (or sister) be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolator, or a railer, or a drunkard, or an extortioner; with such an one no not to eat. For what have I to do to judge them also that are without? do not ye judge them that are within? But them that are without God judgeth. Therefore put away from among yourselves that wicked person.” I Cor 5: 1-13

I have to say, when I first listened to Cheryl’s debut solo album, I wasn’t keen, I really wasn’t. I’ve listened to it all week now and LOVE IT. It’s definitely a grower. Just give it a chance if you felt the same. I mean, I’m a massive Girls Aloud fan so there was always going to be the painful comparison of Cheryl on her own without the girls…. it wasn’t ever going to be the same. But hell, it’s not half bad, not half bad at all! Alas, I degress, 3 Words is one of the songs I was finding myself humming and singing, badly. So it’s quite nice that this is Cheryl’s follow up single to Fight For This Love.

In the 3 Words video, Cheryl takes on three ‘personas’: her usual Hollywood glamour look with big big hair, a blunt brunette bob and unusually her final look is a gaga inspired platinum blonde style. It’s definitely fair to say Cheryl looks best with her brunette locks!

Perez Hilton, if you know who he is, you know he is the infamous celebrity blogger turned “celebrity”  himself.  Even if you don’t like him, you’ve got to admit he was extremely successful with perezhilton.com; that he is a pioneer for bloggers who want to make it big.

He’s releasing a tell-all book, “Perez Hilton’s True Bloggywood Stories–The Glamorous Life of Beating, Cheating, and Overdosing.”

Will his book be successful?  We think there will be some DEFINITE controversy surrounding it and it will be damaging to Perez’s reputation, not that that isn’t uncharacteristic of him.

Highlights of the book are  “Steamy Details on Twilight Dating”, “The Michael Jackson Catastrophe”, “Exclusive details on Perez’s controversial face-to-face encounters with Will.I.Am, Carrie Prejean, and Drew Barrymoore“, “Exclusive dish on Jon and Kate+8 debacle and other reality TV scandals”, just to name a few.  Does this dish sound delish?

Perez is also offering to personally autograph every book that is bought and sent to a special address.  As for live signings, there’s no information on that yet.

So, is this a win or fail move?  We’re tempted to look through the book if we see it lying around!

The Lohan family’s media appetite is almost at Gosselin-like levels, and all of their attention is LOL-riffic!

First things first, the Ungaro/Lindsay fashion chronicles continue. There has been a lot of “he-said-she-said” with regards to Lohan’s job security at Ungaro. You’d think this would be a no-brainer for the HR department, what with the half naked models their celebutant consultant sent down the runway only months ago. According to People Magazine, though, the label’s President and Chief Executive, Mounir Moufarrige, contends that Lindsay still “has a job to do.” Oh goodie, I can’t wait for round two! We’ll have to wait till next season to see what kind of horrific mess Lohan cooks up for the fashion house.

I know it’s Thanksgiving, but it must be a really slow news day for celebrity journalists. People Magazine’s lead online story details exactly how the Lohans will be spending the holiday. Dina makes sure nothing goes up in smoke and the eldest daughter comes home for the feast–big deal. Who cares? Doesn’t sound like anything special to me! You can read all the (not so) juicy details here. While you’re on the website, perhaps you can leave some constructive criticism for the reporters working this week.

I saved the best for last: check out these hilarious photos of the Lohans helping the hungry! Perez is right on–totally a publicity stunt. And what’s more, I didn’t even recognize little Lohan with that God-awful hair cut–what was she thinking?!

Former Miss California Carrie Prejean has seen some ups and downs over the last year or so.  While appearing in the Miss USA pageant over a year ago, Prejean created controversy after she stated her belief that marriage should be considered a sacred union between a man and a woman. After losing the pageant, and being criticized by judge Perez Hilton, Prejean appeared in advertisements for the Proposition 8 campaign, and became a frequent guest on political talk shows. The drama has continued, however. After suing the Miss USA pageant, Prejean was recently forced to settle when lawyers showed her a personal sex tape from her earlier years and threatened to make it public.

The news of the sex tape, which followed earlier stories about scandalous photographs she took as a teen model, put Prejean in an awkward position since she was set to promote her recently released book on the pageant that changed her life. Forced to address the sex tape scandal, Prejean called the incident the “biggest mistake” of her life and explained that she engaged in the sexual behavior for a partner in a long distance relationship. However, the scandal deepened with news that there were many other sex tapes and pictures that have yet to be made public.

Under pressure, and obviously refusing to discuss the matter any longer, Prejean made her situation worse when she stormed off the set of Larry King Live after the host asked her about her recent settlement. To see that incident yourself watch the following video:

Discussion Questions:

1.  Prejean does not seem to be recovering very well from the sex scandal. If you were on her crisis management team, how would you repair her reputation?

2.  Some might say that Prejean is in major trouble because she is guilty of hypocrisy. According to this logic, why is Prejean – who criticized people for living a homosexual lifestyle – a hypocrite for appearing in private sex tapes?

3.  It appears that Prejean might have performed in more “inappropriate” videos and pictures that have yet to be released. Should she wait to address those embarrassing images when they are made public, or should she be completely open about all that might be out there?  What does she have to win or lose by being completely honest?

Taylor Lautner is going to be on the cover of Rolling Stone this month and he is looking extra hot. I was informed about this and how gorgeous Taylor was looking via text message from my friend, who saw the post on PerezHilton.com. These photos are ones that Perez posted on his blog earlier and I can see why my friend was freaking out. I know that I’ll be purchasing this issue of Rolling Stone ASAP.

It’s because people love lesbians. Especially most straight men love lesbian women kissing each other or even better having hardcore sex. I love lesbian women, it’s my favorite kind of porn.

The reason so many people are offended at the man on man kiss with Lambert and the dancer is because there are not a lot of straight people out there that enjoy seeing two men kiss. Most people do find two men kissing disgusting. It shouldn’t be on network TV, on a regular TV channel, that is not cable. It is something called, the “ick factor”.

It was more accepting for MTV with Madonna and Britney because it’s on MTV and it was a PG-14 thing. Remember, before the MTV Awards air on TV, there is a “mature viewing matters” warning before they start the show on TV. Letting people know beforehand that there will be plenty of adult material on MTV Awards.

The American Music Awards which is on ABC, a network non-cable station, didn’t do that. This is the reason for the backlash against ABC. ABC are stupid idiots that allowed this. ABC needs to suffer some harsh consequences for this. ABC is a family friendly station and they screwed this up.

It was an embarrassing performance, and I’m sure Lady Gaga would have handled the homosexual themed performance much better as she usually does.

What ABC did was ridiculous and all they are doing is trying to follow the footsteps of MTV. Do a shock factor for ratings and controversy.

I have no problem with gay people as I respect them, but Adam Lambert is a joke and a prick who deserve no career in the music industry. His album will fail and won’t even reach high in the Billboard charts. End of story.
