Yesterday was such a Moan-Day and then it wasn’t.

I hadn’t even left the house yet and my bra strap pops off.  I didn’t have time to peel off my layers and fix it so I had to walk to work with one of the girls a little bouncier than the other.  Thank God I walk to work at 5am and in the dark…in layers.

The shift was pretty good, no real complaints about that.  I called The Boss to talk shop.  I thought he’d be cranky with me for complaining to him so early on a Monday morning, but he was with me on my gripes.

So…I had a meet up with Cortejo and Shane.  Something always happens to make me late or eff it up.  If I believed in God, I’d say He was messing with me.  I get part way to the city and decide to stop for gas somewhere on the way in because it’s cheaper.  It’s full service the place I stop and he’s already pumping the gas before I can find my wallet in my massive purse (I need a smaller one, such a big purse is unbecoming of a lesbian).  Long story short, no wallet.  Apologize to gas guy, apologize to Cortejo (to the point I’m sure if I had said “I’m sorry” one more time she might have throttled me)…drive alllllll the way home, grab my wallet, gas up in town, fly like the wind to the city.  I’m pretty easy going person most of the time.  But that’s one of those things that flaps me…I really hate making people wait.

I realized yesterday, talking with Cortejo that sheesh, I really don’t want to be in love.  Not right now, anyway.  It’s really terrible, I am a total guy about it.  I get squirrelly about it.  Girls just say it at the drop of a hat…the hat hasn’t even hit the floor, it’s not even out of your fingers yet and someone is saying “I love you”.  I said it to Steph, but turns out it wasn’t so much love as I was just…yeah.  What can I say?

<Pulling pants on>”Yeah, that’s great.  Listen, I’ve got to go.  My cat…is having…emergency rhinoplasty in the morning.”

Hahaha what can I say?  I’m sure it’ll happen one day where some girl makes me all doe-eyed and full of feelings, I’ll want to hold hands and buy matching hers-and-hers towels.  Until then, bring on the ladies!

Shane isn’t actually a Shane, but we were swapping girl stories yesterday and she’s the Gay Fonz.  Two girls at once.  That’s ever straight man and lesbian’s dream.  I bow down to her awesomeness.  We’re so alike, it’s rather comical.  We say we’re evil twins.  Evil Wonder Twins.  I wonder what we’d take the form of?  Something evil?  Something gay?  Something evil AND gay?

We were looking at some movies in Zellers and commenting on this movie where Selma Hayek has a gay moment with Ashley Judd.

Shane:  Selma Hayek is hot.  Ashley Judd is hot.

Me:  It’s always awesome when hot chicks make out.  It’s less awesome when not so hot chicks make out.  Like say, Rita McNeil making out with Oprah.  No one wants to see that.

Shane:  <Getting a visual>  Oh my God!  Where do you come up with this stuff, and so fast?

Don’t try to understand my mind…I’m mad, mad I tell you!

I talk a lot…I don’t know how to shut up sometimes.  I get nervous, I get rambley.  Still, they still have all their ears and both still want to hang out, so hurray for small miracles.

D and I have some up with a new commercial idea.  We were talking about The Learning Channel (which has really transformed into a channel devoted to the misery of human lives) had a show about a 650lb virgin guy who was at something called “Meow” which was a cougar gathering (Oh my God, I want to go!) and he had a panic attack when they spoke to him.  D says I should rub up against him since I’m so good at getting cougars to chase me.  I said I’d rather bottle it…just think, I’d make millions.  So the idea is that we’d do a perfume commercial based on “Gaynip” scent.  We need a cougar to tackle me.  Sorta like Axe, but gayer.  And with cougar sound effects.

…Hmmm…who could I impose upon to tackle and maul me…

After seeing episodes of “I Want to Work for Diddy,” I think it might be interesting to watch him try to sell bottles of “Unforgivable” for a change.

So, my favorite perfume is Laundromat from Demeter. I bought it in NYC several years ago, and have just a few drops left. On the same trip, Kate bought Dirt.

Nice combination, don’t you think? Sephora used to carry the line, but they’ve been sidetracked with Mimosa and Vanilla Cookie gels and lotions (though I do love my Mimosa soap in the morning). Lucky for you, I have found all of the sniff-sniff smelly stuff I know you love..

If you are like me, there is not much in the world more intimidating than the perfume counter at a big department store. It’s not just because of the incredible mixture of scents hovering in the air, though that’s part of it.  It’s all those choices, all those special words they use, all those ladies behind the counter that seem to have access to some alchemical secret that’s … well … secret.

I recently had the good fortune to meet with Parise Yun, a perfume expert and representative for some of the unique scents available at Qortezan.  She shared some of her experience and wisdom with me and helped to demystify the art of choosing the right perfume.

Most perfumes are fairly complex and have at least 30-40 different ingredients in them.

The first thing that hits you is the top note.  This is the first impression you get when you spray a perfume and it can actually be quite fleeting.

Next, as the top note disperses, the middle notes come through.  This is the heart of the fragrance – a bit of everything that is essential to the perfume.

After about 10 or 15 minutes the perfume begins to “warm down” and the bottom notes begin to surface.  These are often warm woodsy lingering components.

Chemistry is everything.  Every scent will take on different characteristics depending on your skin and its acidity.  Once you have waited for all these layers to emerge, you can start to get a sense of how it reacts with your body chemistry.

Here are some tips for trying a new scent.

Fleur D'Ombre - Ombre Bleu

If you think you’ll like it, spray it on your wrist.  Resist the urge to rub it – that will mash up all the ingredients and they won’t get a chance to settle and develop in all their intended complexity.

Wait about 20 minutes before you decide to buy a perfume.  It takes that long for you to know if you really like it.  If you find yourself smelling your wrist for the whole 20 minutes, you’ll know it’s right for you!

Bem, queridas, estou de volta e estou fervendo! Huehuehue Cheguei de viagem ontem e, com aquele calor todo, não perdi a oportunidade e tomei meu primeiro banho de sol desta estação. Estava tão branca que brilhava como o Edward (alguém seguiu a dica pro findi e entendeu a piadinha interna? hehehe), mas acho que a horinha e meia de ontem já deve ajudar alguma coisa.

Quanto à viagem, foi o seguinte: nesse final de semana recebemos aqui em Santa Maria uns amigos dos meus pais de Floripa, e eles estavam a fim de conhecer Rivera pra fazer aquelas comprinhas confirmadas. Nós fomos com eles, e claro, também fizemos nossas aquisições.

Quem é gaúcho aqui desta região provavelmente já conheça a cidade uruguaia, que faz fronteira com Santana do Livramento, e que é um pólo de compras, por causa de seus inúmeros free shops, que vendem produtos de alta qualidade, com preços muuuuito mais baixos do que os que a gente paga no Brasil.

Tenho um sem-número de amigos que vai à Rivera freqüentemente fazer seus ranchos de perfumes, cosméticos, queijos, bebidas, doces e aparelhos eletrônicos, e que estão habituados a ir desde a infância. Eu, porém, só fui lá pela primeira vez há uns três, quatro anos e desde então estive lá meia dúzia de vezes. Não sou, portanto, tão entendida no assunto e talvez não tenha tantas dicas espertas sobre as compras por lá, mas sei o básico. Quem tiver mais dicas imperdíveis de lá, deixa nos comentários, hein!

Pois bem. Primeira dica (talvez a mais importante): existe uma cota, de US$ 300,00 a serem gastos no nome de uma mesma pessoa nos free shops. Ou seja, você não pode comprar além desse valor.

No momento da compra os free shops sempre pedem a identidade, e o seu nome vai na nota fiscal. Se você somar mais do que US$ 300,00 em notas no seu nome, você ultrapassou a cota. Guarde sempre a nota fiscal, porque ela é exigida na aduana.

Se você ultrapassar a cota, cuidado! A fiscalização está grande nos últimos tempos, em função do dólar baixo. Ela é feita na saída da cidade de Santana do Livramento, pela polícia federal. Quem está mais habituado sabe inclusive quais são os horários em que eles costumam estar pegando, e tem até quem mande amigos na frente pra ver se está livre a passagem, pra depois seguir.

Mas seguramente, a maneira mais simples de resolver se você ultrapassar a cota é passar, antes de sair de Livramento, na receita federal que fica pertinho dos free shops bem na divisa entre Uruguai e Brasil. Na receita federal você vai pagar o imposto sobre aquele valor que ultrapassou a cota. Se não me engano, a taxa é de 16%. É bem mais tranqüilo. Você vai acabar gastando um pouco mais nas compras que excederam a cota, mas não chega a ser tão caro quanto comprar no Brasil. E evita o transtorno de perder todas as compras (e eles levam mesmo, todas as compras, inclusive as que estão na cota) se você for parado na aduana e eles virem o excesso. Perder tudo o que comprou e todo o dinheiro que gastou não é legal, né, gente? Heuhehe

Outra dica importante (que nós aprendemos nessa última viagem): esta cota não é multiplicável pelo número de pessoas no veículo, tipo: “nós estamos entre quatro pessoas, então a cota é US$ 1.200,00”. Não é bem assim. A cota não é por veículo, é individual. Portanto, é o seguinte: cada um dos quatro pode gastar US$ 300,00 no seu nome, mas a cota é intransferível, por mais que estejam juntos. Se você estiver entre quatro pessoas, realmente vai poder gastar US$ 1.200,00 no total, mas tem que estar dividido em no máximo US$ 300,00 no nome de cada um. Em resumo, na hora de comprar, cuide pra dividir em nomes diferentes as compras, pra distribuir entre as pessoas, e não ultrapassar a cota de nenhuma.

Certo, minha gente? Quanto às cotas é isso. Vamos às compras.

Eu não comprei uma enormidade de coisas, apenas o que estava na minha listinha, e que eu estava realmente precisando.

Por exemplo, estou fazendo academia direto agora, e comecei a correr na esteira. Porém eu comecei a ler sobre o assunto e vi que meus tênis não eram apropriados pra isso. Como eu gosto de corrida, e quero correr mais e melhor, decidi procurar um mais apropriado pra evitar dores e lesões (porque eu sou muuuuito dada às dores e lesões.. Huehuehe). Lá em Rivera os tênis e artigos esportivos em geral são muito mais baratos. Eu comprei este Adidas AdiSTAR Salvation por R$ 175,00 já convertidos para o dólar do dia, na Neutral. Aqui em Santa Maria não se encontra ele por menos de R$ 250,00.

Outro item da minha lista era o rímel da Lancôme, o L’Extreme, que é pra alongar os cílios. Faz séculos que eu uso e é o meu preferido. Lá sai por US$ 21,00, cerca de R$ 40,00. Comprei na Zebra, onde ele vinha com dois brindes: um lápis preto e uma miniatura do famoso demaquilante Bi-facil. Esse brinde é ótimo pra carregar em viagens.

Além disso, trouxe também um gel spray bronzeador da Australian Gold, que muito vi minha cunhada usando ano passado na praia, e muito quis um pra mim! Huheuheu Já experimentei e ajuda mesmo no bronzeado. Mas não dá pra usar só ele, tem que usar um protetor por cima, porque ele praticamente não tem proteção solar. Paguei US$ 12,00, um pouco mais de R$ 20,00, na Neutral.

Comprei também um esfoliante de pêssego da St. Ives, uma marca de cosméticos que tem produtos ótimos a preços muito bons. Paguei US$ 3,50 na Mallorca, pouco mais de R$ 5,00. Os esmaltes Revlon são as mesmas cores que eu já tinha, mas que estão acabando. Comprei para substituir. As cores são 006 Sheer Pink e 721 Raven Red. Paguei US$ 5,50 cada uma, cerca de R$ 10,00.

Os lencinhos demaquilantes da Preven’s são perfeitos pra carregar na bolsa e custaram US$ 2,30, ou seja, algo em torno de R$ 4,00, no The Place. O perfume, que eu vinha namorando desde o ano passado, é o Eternity Summer, da Calvin Klein, e saiu R$ 95,00 (não lembro quanto em dólares) na Mega.

Já o mini spray corporal So Pink, da GAP, custou US$ 5,35, cerca de R$ 10,00. E o desodorante Nike custou US$ 4,00 na Neutral, menos de R$ 8,00.

Viu, só? Bons produtos, de marcas famosas, a um preço muito baixo. Pra quem gosta de comprar, vale a pena ir a Rivera.

E mais uma dica pra finalizar: prefira ir em dias de semana. Sábado enche de filas, e nos feriados Santa Maria inteira vai pra lá e as filas ficam muuuuito maiores. Heuheue

Damn, ShopNBC keeps surprising us with the premium goods it’s selling online.

First, it was Gucci and Tag Heuer watches. Now, it’s designer fragrances from luxury brands such as Gucci, Burberry, Bulgari, Dolce & Gabbana, Prada, Vera Wang and Versace, to just name a few.

These Web exclusive perfumes even include our fragrance of choice: Angel by Thierry Mugler.

We even got some information about the ingredients that make Angel so great: Bergamot, Hedione, Helional, Honey, Dewberry, Red Berries, Vanilla, Caramel, Patchouli, Chocolate and Coumarin.

We suspected food was part of Angel’s mix. How we love the amoma of vanilla, chocolate and caramel. It makes us good enough to eat.

First day of summer tomorrow, one of my favourite summer blends as a spray or inhalation.

viv and i got a chance to vist union church this past sunday (an english-speaking church where we attend whenever we’re in hk). it was a good sunday for us to be there. much was heard and digested (spiritually and physically) and still gestating in me (mainly the spiritual things now).
being away from seattle/home and our normal day-to-day routines we’ve sort of lost track of time… we’re no longer looking at clocks, outlook calendars, etc. and it’s weird but equally good for our soul! we find ourselves unsure of the day of the week or even the time of the month. that’s why it was both serendipitous and a bit sad when the welcoming pastor announced a thanksgiving feast/meal after service.

my stomach was like: turkey, cranberries, sweet potato and pumpkin pie… YES!

BUT… it also meant the first time i’d be away from my immediate/extended family for the holidays and our time abroad will be coming to a close soon…
as the service continued, the senior pastor gave the message on mary’s (lazarus’ sister) act of breaking the bottle of nard/using her hair to wipe Jesus’ feet… and judas’ response to this display of worship. just having been in france and seeing the molinard museum and learning more about perfume/nard made the message that much more interesting to me.
i’m sure when judas voiced his concern/criticism to Christ it must’ve sounded legit and perhaps even justified… i mean c’mon… the loss of 300 denarii (if the nard had been sold instead of broken) and the money that could’ve been raised for the poor? almost a year’s worth of wages! the guy could’ve sounded downright saintly!
i’m fearful/concerned because i could’ve easily thought and/or said the same thing… i would’ve rationalized all the good and longer-lasting good that could’ve been done had the bottle been sold. BUT i realize judas as the treasurer had alterior motives behind the sale of the perfume:

john 12:6: “he did not say this because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief; as keeper of the money bag, he used to help himself to what was put into it.“

(i truly feel bad for judas… seems like his life/life choices were unfair/plain sucked.  :|)
anyway, back to mary and her simple act of reckless abandon. no second thought or guessing… taking such a valuable resource and using it to beautifully worship the Lord.

i’m so encouraged to be hearing of more and more grass-root movements/non-profs (thanks to the internet) being started by everyday folks who feel like they simply have to “do something“. and when i hear this i seemingly convince myself:

“when i get to ‘this point’ in life or ‘that point’ then i will do something“.

what the #@%! is wrong with me?!?! why is my heart/head not drop-kicked into action NOW? my inactivity is costing lives! do whatever i can NOW, however i can NOW!
i know i will struggle to continually find balance in my life. do i use my real-world business experience to get a job and make money and then to give charitably out of my earnings or do i work for a non-profit organization (and potentially not make enough for my mortgage) instead? can i find a balance and perhaps do both… and do it well?
i will continue to press on/struggle to be faithful in prayer and faithful in response to what the Lord calls vivien and i to do.

Luxury Goods and Short Films

In an economy that could do without the wants of luxury goods, what marketing techniques will sell these items? I found an article that was created in 2004 about how short films can be used to sell luxury items. The article, written by Peggy Donahue, was written in 2004 and titled “Short Films: The New Luxury Marketing” (Donahue, 2004).  In 2004, this type of marketing may have been able to be considered new to some people, but short films have been around for decades. Marketers know that short films can be used to create emotional appeal with the consumer.

Although I know that short films are not “new” to marketing or luxury marketing for that matter, I still feel that this article is very helpful to marketers trying to sell luxury goods. The example used in the article is the Chanel No. 5 marketing short film. Donahue describes the short film as follows:

“With the television debut of Chanel No. 5’s three-minute “commercial “ mini-movie featuring Nicole Kidman, and directed by Baz Luhrmann, on Nov. 11, the stakes have risen for the way luxury products are marketed, says the Financial Times of London. Chanel’s short “film,” which aired during “ER,” is a quick-cut version of a love story that tells a tale of the most famous woman in the world (Kidman), who flees a horde of paparazzi and jumps into a taxi where she meets a young writer (Brazilian Rodrigo Santoro) so immersed in his own world that he does not know who she is. They share a lost weekend in his garret before she acknowledges her responsibilities and returns to the outside world” (Donahue, 2004).

Donahue said that the perfume was shown at the end of the film and that was the only time it was shown. Marketers created this short film to attract consumers to the short story and hopefully create a sense of emotion in the consumer about the film. The film was created to appeal to women and hopefully make the women get lost in the film themselves. Short films like this are the way that many marketers are reaching audiences today.
