Disfrutadlo.

Over thousands of years, the remains of plants (and animals) that never fully decomposed have become part of the frozen soil in Alaska, Canada, northern Europe, and Russia. Scientists estimate that these frozen landscapes store twice as much carbon as is found in the atmosphere. As permafrost melts releases carbon dioxide which are going accelerate global warming in the coming century, but increased photosynthesis by tundra plants will help to lessen the impact for a time.

Methane clathrates are also known to be present on the seabed usually at depths of 200 metres to 400 metres. There is an increasing interest the last few years of clathrates as an energy source. But if methane started leaking, it could exacerbate global warming because it is 20 times more powerful at warming the air than carbon dioxide. The great worry though is that as gas is extracted its pressure will break up neighbouring clathrate crystals and there will be an uncontrollable chain reaction or “methane burp” which could trigger landslips, undersea eruptions and even tsunamis. It occurred 251 million years ago, at the end of the Permian period, when a series of methane burps came close to wiping out all life on Earth.

Back to how plant productivity is changing as permafrost thaws. NASA-funded scientists are using hyperspectral satellite images to map the extent of different plant communities in the northernmost part of the United States. This pair of images from the Hyperion sensor on NASA’s EO-1 satellite shows the lake-dotted tundra around Barrow, Alaska. The site is part of the Barrow Environmental Observatory, a large tract of Iñupiat tribal land dedicated to scientific research into Arctic climate and ecosystem change.

The top image ( in false colour) uses light in wavelengths that people can’t even see to distinguish landscape features that the eye couldn’t tell apart in photo-like imagery and photo-like natural colour. It uses shortwave-infrared light in place of red, near-infrared in place of green, and red light in place of blue. Water is dark blue, and undeveloped land areas range from bright green to dull orange to yellow. The natural-color digital image is made from a combination of red, green, and blue light.

Image acquired July 20, 2009. Natural colour

According to Fred Huemmrich, from the University of Maryland-Baltimore County, these colours reflect unique habitats and plant communities that are largely influenced by the amount of available water. The leafiest, most productive vegetation in the area appears bright green. The orange areas are slightly drier and would be favoured by mosses and some sedges. The yellow areas are the driest habitats, and would contain plants like heath along with lichens.

The lakes in this area are known as thermokarst lakes. They form when summer melt water ponds up on the permanently frozen ground below. As permafrost thaws, the lakes sometimes drain out through cracks that develop. The warmer soil and the availability of water make these former lake beds oases for plants in the harsh Arctic climate, and Huemmrich has found that these are usually the most productive locations on the tundra.

Cosa possiamo attenderci ancora?

Das sind Schlittenhunde. Nichts anderes….

Have fun

As I’ve confessed here before, I am something of a weather geek. I watch the weather, track the weather, watch weather disaster shows on tv, consult the weather channel frequently, and think about the weather.

I actually studied the weather in college and grad school in the early 1970s, and learned about the greenhouse effect and global warming long before it became a popular media subject.

The amount of carbon dioxide human activity pumps into the atmosphere has only increased dramatically since then, of course. As has general awareness of the issue. And since today is a day when bloggers are invited to blog action day on climate change (see blogactionday.org for more info) participate in a global project to bring more attention to this issue, I am compelled to share what I believe I know for sure. (Sorry Oprah!)

What I believe I know for sure about global warming:

1. There has been a dramatic rise in CO2 in the last three centuries of human history. While there are short term variations, the graph below shows an unmistakable exponential increase over time since 1700. This is not a scam, it is not a conspiracy, it is simply data. Period. It’s not political, it’s not left or right, it’s just data. Data doesn’t care about our debates and arguments. It just exists. It doesn’t lie, it doesn’t care whether we listen or not. It just is.

2. If you look at the graph, you see that the dramatic rise started around the mid-19th century. What happened at that time? The industrial revolution, of course. Just as it dramatically altered the human experience, it dramatically changed the extent to which human activity produced CO2, and the only place for it to go was the atmosphere. I think there is a lot of evidence that human activity is contributing significantly to CO2 level increases. It’s not the only cause, of course, but it is a contributing factor.

3. The global warming effect that gets the most airtime is rising sea levels. While that would be catastrophic for much of humanity because they live next to the sea, I think there are worse things to worry about. Like the release of methane, released into the atmosphere from melting permafrost, from the ocean as water temperature rises. And methane traps heat radiating from the earth (which is where our heat comes from as opposed from direct solar radiation) 20 times more efficiently than CO2. At certain levels, it actually begins to burn. As in massive fire. The atmosphere ablaze? Now that would be bad. Even worse than rising water.

3. Given that data clearly shows that global temperatures (see right hand graph above) are on a rising trend, wouldn’t we humans want to do everything we can to keep our actions in check so we aren’t fouling our own nest? Disrespecting the only home we have? Can’t we live without consuming so much, satisfying our every desire or fancy? Can we bring it down a notch? Might it actually improve our quality of life? Beginning with us. Me. You?

4. And in the end, as this video shows, we may as well do whatever we can to take action to save our planet, because it’s a win-win or lose-lose proposition. Please take the 10 minutes to watch this video. Do it for me. Do it for you. Do it for the future of humanity.

”The Arctic as we know it may be a thing of the past,” writes Eric Post (Penn State) in the journal Science. He’s not just talking about polar bears and sea-ice. Post and colleagues synthesized material from a myriad of recent studies aimed at understanding the effects of rapid warming on the Arctic to show that changes are afoot all over the ecosystem. Earlier spring thaw is causing the northward march of new kinds of plants, which impacts not only the animals that feed on them, but more esoteric things like snow cover and ground temperature. Post himself has an NSF grant to study the impacts of changing seasonality on caribou in southern Greenland, and his data suggest that the timing of caribou births is out of sync with green-up, resulting in lower percentages of yearling calves. Other animals benefit from the seasonal shift–geese and wild reindeer on Svalbard, for example.

Meanwhile, a new article in the weekly, Nature, reports that Greenland’s and Antarctica’s glaciers are accelerating, probably contributing to sea-level rise more dramatically than previously expected. “To some extent it’s a runaway effect. The question is how far will it run?”, the study’s lead author says in this related article.

“[H]e single-handedly captured the attention of all our students in grades 5-12 for 45 minutes. Short of setting myself on fire and doing cartwheels across the room I really have not been able to accomplish that feat.” So says a school teacher in a rural Alaskan community where Kenji Yoshikawa and his alter ego, Tunnel Man, have visited. Force-of-nature Yoshikawa has an NSF grant to conduct permafrost outreach in the Arctic.

The final challenge in the Trial of the Crusader is a familiar foe. Anub’arak is a massive sc

The final challenge in the Trial of the Crusader is a familiar foe. Anub’arak is a massive scarab that we all fight and easily kill in AN in dragonblight. But this time, he has some new tricks.

After killing off the Twins, the floor drops out from under you and you land in a cold, icy pit. You land in water, but you really need to be grouped in the center of the arena…if you dont land in the water, you die. In the distance you see a bunch of little neutral scarabs skittering around, minding their own business. Beyond that is the final challenge to overcome before unlocking heroic mode so you can start it all over again.

The fight is broken up into three phases.

If you look up, there are Frost Orbs swimming above you. These need to be shot down by one or two ranged players to create an icy platform called Permafrost. Permafrost slows down anything that is standing on it – including the boss and the adds. This is imperative to success as Anub’arak needs to be tanked on it thru phase 1 and 2 and adds need to be killed on it or they will burrow and regen to full health. Permafrost disappates so it needs to be shot down thruout the first two phases. We found that 6-7 orbs was a sufficent amount for tanking the boss and adds at any given time.

Thruout the entire event, a cast called Penetrating Cold will be on five random raiders. The cast creates 3500 frost damage every 3 seconds for 18 seconds. Once the cast drops off of the five raiders, another five will gain it. This is on-going until the end of the event.

Phase One : The raid was grouped up and our designated ranged shot down the frost orbs to create the permafrost platform under Anub. The main tank ran in and quickly turned him so that he was tanked facing away from the raid as he has a nasty cleave that can one shot anything that isnt a tank. Dps starts on the boss. A few moments in two Nerubian Burrowers will pop up - our off tank grabbed them and they were tanked on the permafrost platform right next to the boss. This way those of us that can aoe damage did so. The priority was to burn those burrowers out as fast as possible as they put a debuff on the tanks called Exposed Armor that can stack to 10 increasing physical damage taken. On 25, we only had one off tank, so we switched full dps when there was more than 2 on the off tank, as the stacks of exposed armor can reach ridiculous levels and obviously kill. When Anub burrows, this will signal the beginning of….

Phase Two: This phase has Anub burrowing every 90 seconds..and the pesky nerubian burrowers are still a factor as well. When Anub burrows, a random raid member is targeted and will be pursued by Anub’s spikes. This raid member needs to kite the spikes around the parameter of the room by running and heading toward a platform of permafrost. The spikes do increase in speed very quickly so any speed enhancement you can use is advisable. Once the targeted raider is on the permafrost, the spikes are absorbed, the permafrost disappates and the raid member is safe and another random raider is targeted. If the spikes reach the player, they will be impaled.

This part of the phase continues for about 60 seconds. During this kiting, chasing phase those neutral scarabs that were seen skittering around are now summoned as an angry swarm and biting raid members with a nature debuff that causes damage. They have very little hp but need to be killed as those bites of nature damage can kill raid members. Anub resurfaces, the tank will still have threat on him – we then go back to our phase one tactic, with nerubian burrowers popping up and everything.

Phase Three: Begins when Anub reaches 30%. We made sure to have all adds dead prior to hitting this mark because phase three is hard enough on our healers as it is. Once Anub hits 30% its a tank and spank with a twist:

Leeching Swarm is cast on the entire raid – A swarm of insects attack the raid leeching 10% of each raid members current health every 1 second. This cast also heals Anub. What this means, is that no one except the tank should be over healed or kept at full health. I watched my health meter and I was hovering around 30%. The more health a raid member has, the more health will be leeched per second and healing Anub.

It’s a fine balancing act and very hard to watch out of concern for your own health bar, but if your healers are awesome, you will see very little drop below that 20% mark. You do NOT want to be at full health as it only prolongs Anub’s death. In a full health, 25 man raid Anub would be healed for 60,000 hp per second. The challenge is of course keeping those five random players with penetrating cold from dying – they will need spam heals just to keep them up at 30 percent.

This is the final fight to unlock heroic mode and once we knew about all of the debuffs and stopped underestimating the adds, we have been able to go in and one shot this bug every time.

Heroic mode was next! Our guild finally bested the Northrend Beasts last week – it was no joke. The hits are HARD and there is no room for error. You need every raid member alive and participating, doing their very best the entire time.

So, I cannot tell you hour by hour what I did today. However, I will tell you that it was a cultural experience on par with visiting Morocco. Ok, I just want to start off by saying that I officially have a crush on the village of Barrow and would love to try to live there for a year or two. Yes, you read that right, I would love to live in Barrow, Alaska the most northern incorporated town in the United States. The sense of community there is absolutely amazing. The pride that the folks take in even their municipal systems is pretty amazing, as well it should be. Living in a permafrosted, isolated place like that causes a lot of innovation in the ways that everyday things are done, like a sewer system or electricity. Or just how they even get stuff to them. Everything is either brought in by plane

So, I left Fairbanks on an Alaskan Air flight at about 7:30am. The views out the gate areas were amazing of the mountains in the distance. The flight left early and arrived in Prudoe Bay early. There we took on quite a few more people and the testosterone level in the plane skyrocketed. It was all guys that had had jobs working in the oilfields and on the pipeline. All but the high-up engineers had a little bit of a scruffy look about them, like they were a couple of weeks overdue for a haircut. Admittedly, some of the guys looked like they were a couple of years overdue for their trim. Anyway, talking to one of the guys I found out that a lot of them were nice Midwestern boys working up there for the summer to earn enough money for the rest of the year.

The plane ride from Prudoe bay to Barrow was just a quick 45 minute jump and we were dumped out into the smallest airport that I have ever seen a 737 land at.

One of the ground crew that escorted us on the ground into the building was wearing a native style, fur lined parka, which each woman makes in an individual style, with the fluorescent safety vest over it.
We got into the tour bus which is a school bus not much converted. In fact, I feel as though it could be the same exact bus that I rode to school in 20 years ago! Anyway, our tour guide Ryan started showing us the town. Ryan is a native to Barrow and was a wonderful tour guide. He started off wearing jeans and a t-shirt and, get this, sandals! We went too and fro throughout the town, he showed us sights such as the Will Rogers monument,

The Will Rogers Monument

all the schools and churches in town, the fire department and in general, the whole town. Some of the coolest things that we saw:
The remains of sod houses from the Inupiat Eskimo forefathers.

After you finish all the bosses in ToC, Arthas himself drops you down into a cavern beneath where you have to face Anub’arak to get out. One of my guild’s DKs cast path of frost on me while I was falling, resulting in the frozen lake critting me for, like, a billion. I am going to take this as a sign that he likes the challenge of being misdirected to when he’s least expecting it.

Anyways, despite a rocky start, we learned and killed this boss in under 15 minutes and you can too!

First up, you’ll notice a bunch of yellow bugs skittering around. We didn’t bother them and they didn’t bother us. Until their assigned place in the encounter, at least. When you engage Anub’arak, your tank needs to face him away from the raid to avoid a frontal cleave one shotting the melee. There are floating frost orbs drifting about that need to be killed as they will spawn an area of permafrost. This is important for several reasons, and your raid leader will probably assign someone to bring these down.

Phase 1

During phase 1, he spawns Nerubian Burrowers fairly quickly, and these have to be tanked on an area of permafrost to prevent them from burrowing and healing to full by two tanks (on 25 man), and they have the highest priority. They stack an armor debuff, and it gets worse the more of them there are on a tank. The ranged DPS needs to focus fire them down. At the end of this phase, he’ll burrow and let you finish off the remaining burrowers.

Phase 2

While you’re finishing off the burrowers, tons of creepy little Swarm Scarabs will spawn. These things are nasty little critters and they’re everywhere. They can be kited, but there’s too many to tank as they debuff their target. Just AOE when you can, and kite when you can’t. Pull them off healers liberally. While this is going on, Anub’arak is busy following people and trying to poke holes in them. This never happened to me, but I think I saw the hunter’s mark sticking out of the ground allowing the player he was chasing to see how much room he had. If you’re being pursued, you need to run him over some permafrost and make sure when he spikes, he’s not right under you. He has to hit his head on permafrost a few times before he comes back up. [ed: Thanks Kat!]

He also throws spikes at people- these move slowly at first but speed up. They have to be kited into a permafrost, which will despawn on impact. This is partly why it’s important to have someone bringing down more orbs. During this phase, he alternates between burrowing and being tanked. Luckily, it’s not a threat reset when he burrows. You need to make sure that you have most of the adds cleared before you get him below 30% though, because:

Phase 3

This is the money phase, and it starts when he’s at 30%. Save your heroism/bloodlust, and blow your speed potion here. He starts dealing massive amounts of raid damage with leeching swarm, which heals him. You need to have finished most of the adds at this point, and do nothing but execute Anub. Your healers will be trying to keep you in the 5000 range of health so as little healing as possible is done to Anub (who is taking a percent of your health). This very quickly becomes unhealable, but with enough alive DPS, you’ll get it.

Summary

So, as a hunter, what are the takeaways here? You need to:

Focus fire the Nerubian Burrowers while they’re up

AOE, kite, and peel swarm scarabs from healers while they’re up

Kite spikes to permafrost

If you get followed, make sure you’re standing on a permafrost when he catches you

Maybe shoot down permafrost orbs if you’re assigned to it

Save cooldowns for phase three

Have some emergency heals ready if your healers get overwhelmed at 1%

Sounds hard, but it’s not.
