Our first album, “Permission to Land” by The Darkness, released in 2003. It seems that it was yesterday when I was buying it, just released, and suddenly it has been six years since then! F*ck, time passes so fast!

The Darkness fue una banda de hard rock creada en el Reino Unido por los hermanos Justin (guitarra y voz) y Dan (guitarra) Hawkins, Frankie Poullain (bajo) y Ed Graham (batería). Su primer single “I Believe in a Thing Called Love” alcanzó el número uno de las listas de ventas del Reino Unido, y su primer álbum Permission to Land, ha vendido más de cuatro millones de copias.

Han declarado estar influenciados por bandas de rock de los años 70 como AC/DC, Van Halen, Queen, T-Rex, Aerosmith y Led Zeppelin. Los tonos agudos de Hawkins se han convertido en una marca de identidad.

The Darkness ganó tres Brit Awards en 2004, incluyendo Mejor Banda, Mejor Grupo de Rock y Mejor Álbum.

La banda publicó en 2005 su segundo disco “One Way Ticket to Hell …and Back”. En mayo del 2005, Poullain abandono el grupo por diferencias musicales, siendo sustituido por Richie Edwards.

En Octubre de 2006, Justin Hawkins, compositor, guitarrista y cantante, anuncia que abandona el grupo por problemas con las drogas y el alcohol. El bajista Richie Edwards se hará cargo del micro. Mientras, Hawkins volcará sus fuerzas en grabar un disco en solitario y hacer música para películas.

El ex cantante de The Darkness, Justin Hawkins, se encontró entre los seis candidatos para representar a Reino Unido en la edición del Festival de Eurovisión 2007, que tuvo lugar el 12 de mayo en Helsinki, Finlandia.

Historia y biografia

The Darkness (Justin Hawkins -voz y guitarra-, Dan Hawkins -guitarra-, Frankie Poullain -bajo- (ahora Richie Edwards) y Ed Graham -batería-) es la banda que ha puesto nuevamente a Londres y a todo el Reino Unido bajo el pulso del rock. La banda de Justin Hawkins ha recuperado el espíritu del rock de los 70, y con un estilo a mitad de camino entre Queen y AC/DC, se ha convertido en un auténtico fenómeno social en todo el planeta. Su disco de debut, Permission to land (2003) ha vendido más de 4 millones de copias en todo el mundo. Este grupo se ha labrado un reconocido prestigio entre los medios y el público ingleses a base de actuar en todo tipo de salas a lo largo y ancho del Reino Unido. Se dieron a conocer tras una serie de legendarios conciertos en Londres, donde demostraron, además de su buena música, su gran talento para el espectáculo. Sus recientes actuaciones en los festivales de Glastonbury y Reading fueron las más comentadas de este año.

Canciones como el primer single Growing on me, I believe in a thing called love o Get your hands off my woman entre muchas otras confirman el enorme potencial de esta banda que recupera el espíritu del mejor rock de los 70 y 80. Los miembros de The Darkness crecieron bajo la influencia de las bandas que escuchaban (Queen, Aerosmith y similares), pero pronto crearon un estilo único; sus canciones son todas himnos potenciales y resulta muy difícil no corearlas al oírlas. La esencia de The Rolling Stones, Thin Lizzy y otras grandes bandas rockeras es capturada en los himnos intensos del grupo, porque sus influencias provienen de un periodo del rock de los setenta, cuando florecieron espectaculares bandas de guitarra como AC/DC y Queen. Pero ellos entregan su música con una convincente arrogancia y un toque de ironía postmoderna.

Otra reseña: “Verdaderas estrellas. Tan originales que pueden hacer desaparecer el aroma de apatía y de insipidez que se multiplica por nuestro país, gracias a una banda que nos dio rock con tanta fuerza que tuvimos que seguirlos”.

Permission to Land

Hace un tiempo atrás, nadie daba un peso por este grupo, a tal punto que ellos mismos tuvieron que costearse la grabación de su primer disco Permission to Land. Ahora tienen una multinacional apoyándolos y eso ciertamente ha acrecentado el mito que se está tejiendo alrededor de los hermanos Hawkins y compañía, quienes el 17 de febrero del 2004 acapararon la atención de la prensa al recibir tres estatuillas en los Brit Awards.

El disco comienza con “Black shuck”, una de las canciones más potentes del disco con un riff al más puro estilo de Angus Young. En “Growing on me”, Justin descansa un poco de los falsetes, que sólo aparecen a ratos, y resulta muy agradable escuchar como suena normalmente su voz. Luego viene el gran éxito mundial “I believe in a thing called love”, un tema pegajoso y muy entretenido, que a ratos tiene mucho de Queen. “Love is only a feeling” es una balada que tiene una melodía llena de contrastes y que se pasea por un amplio registro. Los punteos de la guitarra sobresalen mucho y eso mezclado con los coros da un resultado muy interesante. “Givin´ up”, con su cansador estribillo, y “Stuck in a rut” son los temas más débiles del disco. “Holding my own” es una clásica balada rockera. La melodía, la guitarra y los coros interactúan y se intercalan en una estructura dramática que recuerda a los mejores ejemplos del género. Una canción muy hermosa.

En suma, Permission to land, es un disco con unas armonías y un sonido muy típico del metal ochentero, guitarras que recuerdan a Kiss y AC/DC, y unos falsetes teatrales que evocan de alguna manera al incomparable Freddie Mercury.

One Way Ticket to Hell …And Back

A diferencia de su álbum debut, mucho más excesivo y caricaturesco, este álbum se perfila como un trabajo más logrado y estructurado, pensado en cada paso de su construcción. Nos sorprende el cantante Justin Hawkins con su voz, para nada limitada, pero mucho más controlada en impulsos, ha aprendido a modularla y así controlar sus registros.

En los nuevos sonidos ahora podemos encontrar pianos y sintetizadores, o elementos menos comunes como sitares, triángulos, panderetas o un flautista peruano en la particular intro del disco.

Y es con todos estos cambios que el grupo pretende presentarse a medios y público como algo menos divertido que en su debut, y lograr así una imagen mucho más respetable, para llegar a posicionarse como una banda duradera en el tiempo.

Es decir verdad que cada uno de los temas incluidos es una gran hit en potencia. Y todo comienza con “One Way Ticket”, un específico corte con un derrumbante riff guitarrero. Y nos sorprende con el falsete operístico y muy exagerado y un estribillo simple que manifiesta la base del rock’n’roll.

La salida de Justin Hawkins

Según ha revelado el diario británico The Sun, el vocalista Justin Hawkins se ha marchado rápidamente de The Darkness tras abandonar el centro de rehabilitación para poder continuar su tratamiento contra las drogas. La banda seguirá adelante con el bajista Richie Edwards como frontman.

En una entrevista con este diario, Hawkins ha hablado sinceramente sobre su batalla con el alcohol y las drogas. Hawkins asegura haberse gastado más de 150.000 libras (unos 225.000 Euros) en cocaína a lo largo de los últimos tres años. Según Classic Rock, Hawkins le dijo a The Sun que “One way ticket to hell …and back” (el último disco de la banda) “es, por supuesto, autobiográfico”. Hawkins comenta que “estaba consumiendo hasta cinco gramos de cocaína al día, lo que me costaba unas 1000 libras a la semana, a veces incluso más. Solía estar despierto hasta cuatro días seguidos con coca y alcohol. Afectó a cada una de mis decisiones. Todo estaba decidido en función a que debía tomar cocaína en algún momento. Pedía que fueramos los primeros en una entrega de premios para poder seguir con mis alcoholización y mi drogadicción”.

En Agosto, Hawkins canceló un festival en Dinamarca y se metió en un centro de rehabilitación. “Me metí ahí, y me deshice” ha declarado Hawkins a The Sun. Ahora Hawkins está dando los primeros pasos para su recuperación y disfrutando de una vida tranquila con su novia, Sue Whitehouse, manager de The Darkness. Respecto a su decisión de abandonar la banda, Justin ha dicho que “me siento mal por los otros chicos de la banda. Será un golpe duro. Pero es el momento para cambiar. Sería peligroso para mi recuperación seguir en la banda. No le echo la culpa a la banda de mi problema – soy un adicto. Hay gente que puede estar en bandas y mantenerse limpio, pero yo no soy uno de ellos”.

Hawkins delcaró también que tuvo en mente irse de The Darkness el año pasado antes de la gira mundial de la banda, pero que quiso seguir antes de meterse a rehabilitación. Hawkins dice que ahora se concentrará en hacer un disco en solitario y escribir música para películas.

Stone Gods, Nuevo Comienzo

• El 14 de Diciembre de 2006, se informó por Yahoo! News que Richie Edwards seguirá adelante con la banda como nuevo frontman del grupo, y el nuevo componente Toby MacFarlaine tomará el bajo. En las entradas del blog en MySpace, Richie Edwards, Dan Hawkins y Ed Graham dijeron que ellos habían empezado la grabación de un nuevo álbum con Toby McFarlaine y el cambio oficial de nombre.

… vous avez bien lu encore une fois… (Si nous n’avez toujours pas fermé la fenêtre de votre navigateur).

Peu inspiré par l’écriture d’un nouveau billet, l’idée m’est venue de me donner un certain défi pour en venir à bout. Pourquoi ne pas écrire à propos d’un album dont la possession me fait relativement rougir et dont plusieurs détails m’échappent encore et toujours aujourd’hui ? Après avoir consulté profondément ma discothèque personnelle, mon dévolu s’est jeté en trombe sur The Darkness. Hyper inspirant comme sujet puisque ce groupe britannique (ils peuvent pas être tous bons…), ayant percé les oreilles de plusieurs d’entre-vous en 2004, est passé dans notre mémoire à court terme aussi rapidement qu’il s’est dissous de lui-même.

Je l’avoue (les prochains cinq mots seront très durs à écrire pour moi) j’ai acheté leur premier, de deux, album alors que mon Secondaire 5 battait son plein au rythme des trois solos de I believe in a Thing called Love. En effet, Permission to Land orne encore et toujours les ténébres de ma discothèque aux côtés de Will Smith et autres Big Shiny Tunes (là, c’est beaucoup d’aveux à la fois, prenez donc une pause et respirez profondément, ou je vous invite encore une fois à fermer votre fenêtre).

Donc, venons-en aux choses sérieuses (s’il je peux vraiment les nommer de cette manière) avec mes commentaires sur cet enregistrement (parce que ici, j’évite les commentaires élogieux à propos de l’objet, du genre “l’oeuvre”). L’album débute sur un ramachage plus ou moins officiel d’AC/DC croisé à la voix Freddie Mercury, de Queen, (Mika a aussi reprit le concept en 2007, AC/DC en moins) sur Black Shuck, ce qui en dira long sur le reste de l’album. Puis on enchaîne avec ce que l’on peut appeler les “Trois pièces qui font l’album à elles toutes seules” soit Get your hands off my Woman, Growing on Me ainsi que le super hit international l’incomparable (en fait, c’est très comparable…) I beliève in a Thing Called Love.

Tandis que la dernière pièce du lot n’a plus besoin de présentation et qu’elle (je me dois bien de l’avouer) continue à accrocher l’oreille, son vidéoclip avait traumatisé les masses avec le suite du chanteur Justin Hawkins pas mal ajusté, qui fut très sûrement volé directement dans un vieux garde-robe de David Bowie. De son côté, Get your hands off my Woman nous permet d’entendre des hautes fréquences plutôt inexplorées dans le domaine de la voix masculine, à l’exception de quelques escapades de Geddy Lee de Rush dans les années ‘70. Enfin, Growing on me est disons la toune la plus crédible de l’album, la seule qui n’a pas soulevé dans mon esprit le souvenir de quelconque autre groupe…

Le reste de l’album ? Bah… je l’ai jamais vraiment écouté et mon petit doigt me dit que je devrais même pas essayer de le faire. Aurais-je le courage un jour ? À suivre…

The song? ‘Take On Me’

What about it? Who doesn’t like ‘Take On Me’? A keyboard-fused, pop-ditty that has stood the test of time and almost twenty years later remains one of popular music’s best-known tracks. The intriguing vocals of Morten Harket, the energetic, catchy banter of Magne’s Furuholmen’s keyboard – look up “perfect pop tune” in the dictionary and you’ll find ‘Take On Me’.

My point?

When ‘I Believe in a Thing Called Love’ hit the radio this autumn, The Darkness were propelled into the stratosphere. Already attracting the most attention at summer festivals, and a top ten hit to their name (‘Growing On Me’), the release of rock music’s answer to ‘Take On Me’ was the final piece of the puzzle. The perfect rock song, if you like.

The Darkness, from Suffolk in the South of England, have been on the scene for about three years. But it’s only this year that has seen their constant touring pay off. Having been unheard of at the turn of the year, they have subsequently supported Def Leppard, Deep Purple, The Rolling Stones and Metallica, appeared at several top summer festivals, spent five weeks at #1 in the UK album charts, and recorded three UK hit singles including a #2 smash hit.

So what’s it all about? Well if you took the glam-metal sound of Poison, the on-stage histrionics of Queen, the good-time groove of Status Quo and a sincere sense of humour (Spinal Tap without the irony) – you have The Darkness.

Featuring Justin Hawkins (lead vocals/guitar), Dan Hawkins (guitar), Freddie Poullain (bass) and Ed Graham (drums), The Darkness’ debut record “Permission to Land” has amazingly gone double-platinum in Ireland. Yet a quick peruse of amazon.com’s album reviews reveal some very ruffled feathers. There’s no doubt that The Darkness have split the rock fraternity.

Where to start….

Throbbing with a heavy, electric intro, opening track ‘Black Shuck’ is an hilarious medieval tale about a killer dog. ‘In a town to the east/Parishioners were visited upon/By a curious beast’, goes the legend. This vicious animal takes no prisoners (‘A glance beckoned the immediate loss/Of a cherished one’) and quite frankly doesn’t care (Black Shuck/That dog don’t give a f*ck). ‘Black Shuck’ is a great representation of what The Darkness are all about. The lyrics are sharp and humorously poetic, the music is masterful and catchy, the guitar work frenetic.

Three singles follow. The album’s best cut is probably ‘Get Your Hands Off My Woman’, a fairly unsubtle assault on someone ‘drunk and surly’ who has stolen Justin’s woman. ‘I’ve got no right to claim to her frame/She’s not my possession/You c*nt’, he bemoans. Quite right too. Now incase you didn’t pick up on Justin’s unusual vocal style in ‘Black Shuck’, you can’t miss it here. It’s fair to say that this is probably the best falsetto since, ironically, Morten Harket (see opening paragraph). If you think a rock falsetto is a great tool to cover up a limited voice, you’d be way off the mark. When Justin hollers ‘Get your hands off my woman, motherf*cker’, he does it with an inexplicable control and panache. You should be laughing at him, but you laugh with him.

More light-hearted is ‘Growing on Me’, a rock-boogie that is seemingly about a reluctant love affair, but turns out to be about something else altogether (‘I can’t get rid of you/I don’t know what to do/I don’t even know who is growing on who’). So what’s he on about then if he’s not talking about his ex-lover? How about: ‘Sleeping in an empty bed/Can’t get you off my head/I won’t have a life until you’re dead’ and ‘I wanna shake you off but you just won’t go/And you’re all over me but I don’t want anyone to know’. Yup, it’s about genital warts.

There’s not many who haven’t heard ‘I Believe in a Thing Called Love’, a big-boned, infectious rock anthem that grabs you by the balls and has you singing with a ludicrous falsetto before you know it. While the opening three songs are quite strong lyrically, ‘I Believe…’ is merely functional: ‘Can’t explain all the feelings that you’re making me feel/My heart’s in overdrive and you’re behind the steering wheel’. If the idea is to parody 80s cock-rock, then they’ve achieved it. But The Darkness insist they are not a parody act so we’ll assume that’s not the case, and that what we have here is a simple rock song that lets the music do the talking. To that end, they’ve created one of the most iconic rock songs in recent memory.

The strong material continues a little longer. Justin’s intro to ‘Love is Only a Feeling’ at gigs is normally: ‘Get your lighters out, it’s time for the power ballad’. It starts inauspiciously enough, before building in the bridge and finally unleashing with a fist-in-the-air cry of ‘Love is only a feeling, anyway’. Sometimes the lyrics are amusing – (‘I felt light-headed at the touch of this stranger’s hand/An assault my defences systematically failed to withstand’ and ‘The state of elation that this unison of hearts achieved’). At other times, it’s just the clever wrapping of the lyrics around the music that helps the song stand out: ”Cos you came at a time/When the pursuit of one true love/In which to fall/Was the be all and end all’.

I alluded to a Status Quo influence in an earlier paragraph and ode to heroin, ‘Givin’ Up’ is where this is most apparent. Before anyone gets upset and all in a tizzy, it’s all done tongue-in-cheek. They’re not really advocating the use of Class A drugs. ‘My mama wants to know/Where I’m spending all my dough’, according to Justin. The answer is clear: ‘I won’t apologise/I’d inject it in my eyes/If there was nowhere else to stick my skag’.

‘Givin’ Up’ is a raucous, layered, stadium rocker that features a couple of terrific guitar solos and downright hilarious vocals and lyrics. ‘My friends have got some good sh*t/All I want is some of it/Gimme, gimme, gimme that smack…But I found myself an easy way out/Sticking that f*cking sh*t into my arms…Givin’ up, givin’ a f*ck’. Yes, there’s lot of swearing. Yes, it’s funny.

I know I’m repeating myself here, but lyrically this album really takes some beating. ‘Friday Night’ is another fine whimsical effort – a reminisce about a girl Justin used to love. ‘Hey you, do you remember me/I used to sit next to you in school/We indulged in all the extra-curricular activities/We weren’t particularly cool’.

With a leaning to a Robert Smith[of The Cure]-style vocal, this mid-tempo romp is great fun. How many songs can not only slip in the phrase ‘extra-curricular activities’, but also lines like ‘Monday cycling/Tuesday gymnastics/Dancing on a Friday night/I got Bridge Club on Wednesday/Archery on Thursday/Dancing on a Friday night’?

Usual concert closing epic, ‘Love on the Rocks With No Ice’ is very much the antonymous brother of ‘Friday Night’. The subject matter is slightly more sober – the act of putting a public face on a struggling relationship – and it’s a heavy, brooding, five-minute plus rocker with some really strong guitar work.

Okay so it’s not a whitewash – there are a couple of weaker moments, although granted this is only due to the immensely high standards that The Darkness have set themselves.

‘Stuck in a Rut’ throws in plenty of local references to the band’s geographical roots in Suffolk (‘The Barnby Bends ain’t gonna get the better of me…The Acle Straights are gonna take me to where I wanna be’). But while lyrically entertaining, the music is mediocre and just doesn’t hook like other tracks – although the mid-track, maniacal laugh of ‘thank you master’ and subsequent guitar break are a bit of a saver.

Final track, ‘Holding My Own’, is a gentle, double-entendre filled lament. Justin sings about how well he is dealing with a relationship breakdown (‘Baby, everything has fallen into place/My life is so exciting now I’ve got my space’) and the reason for this (‘Lately I’m doing what I can do to pleasure me/I’m finding time to focus on my fantasies/I’m satisfied in my own company’). As if that wasn’t enough, the soaring chorus joins the dots for you (‘I’m holding my own/No matter what I put myself through’). A decent track that again has a redeeming feature in the form of a nice solo from Dan.

While those final two tracks are by no means poor songs, it’s disappointing that they were included on the album at the expense of, for example, ‘Physical Sex’ and ‘Makin’ Out’, two rather top notch rock songs that back the ‘I Believe in a Thing Called Love’ single.

But as I say above, this is more a reflection of how good the rest of the album is.

The Darkness are, as you’ve probably guessed, a band that you will either love or hate. Quite frankly I love them and they are, in my opinion, the biggest breath of fresh air to hit the music scene since Robbie Williams (I refer to his cracking first album rather than his tired recent releases). They are terrific songwriters, excellent musicians, have a great sense of humour and are wonderful stage performers. As other reviewers have said, the album is not perfect, but the fact that the point is raised is a reflection of just how brilliant it is.

Will they last? Probably not – but if this is the beginning and end of the Darkness, they will be remembered fondly. By me, anyway.
