Após registrarem ganhos durante a manhã, em meio à expectativa positiva em torno dos indicadores econômicos, os principais mercados acionários operam instáveis nesta quarta-feira (23), após a divulgação dos dados da economia norte-americana ter decepcionado os investidores. Por aqui, o Ibovespa registra valorização de 0,11%.

Após as vendas de casas usadas nos EUA terem superado as estimativas na véspera, o indicador que mede o número de casas novas negociadas no país ficou abaixo dos 438 mil esperados em novembro, ao registrar 355 mil imóveis negociados. Além disso, o número também foi pior do que o reportado no mês anterior (400 mil).

Ainda na principal economia do mundo, o núcleo do índice de preços PCE (Personal Consumption Expenditures), um dos mais observados pelo Banco Central norte-americano, registrou variação nula em novembro, enquanto as projeções dos analistas apontavam inflação de 0,1%.

CSN em destaque
Ocupando grande espaço no noticiário corporativo, a CSN (CSNA3) ganha destaque nesta sessão após a agência de classificação de risco Moody’s ter colocado as notas concedidas à siderúrgica em revisão para possível rebaixamento, em função da possível realização de oferta de ações para aquisição da portuguesa Cimpor, que pode elevar a alavancagem da empresa em um nível “incompatível com a categoria de rating Ba1”.

Ainda nesta sessão, o jornal Valor Econômico informou que a CSN negocia com o Banco Espírito Santo um empréstimo no valor de € 3,4 bilhões para financiar a aquisição de 100% da Cimpor. Segundo a reportagem, o crédito teria prazo de um ano, com prêmios de risco estimados por bancos entre 150 e 200 pontos básicos sobre a Libor. Os papéis da siderúrgica recuam 0,4% no pregão.

Aviação
O segmento ligado ao transporte aéreo também ganha repercussão nos negócios. A GOL (GOLL4) anunciou a contratação de linha de crédito no valor de US$ 150 milhões. O empréstimo será utilizado para “completar o financiamento de pré-pagamento de aeronaves até o final de 2010″, segundo comunicado enviado pela empresa nesta manhã. Seus ativos sobem 1,06%.

No entanto, quem se destaca neste pregão é a TAM (TAMM4). Os papéis disparam 4,8% nesta tarde, liderando os ganhos no Ibovespa. “Dados do tráfego aéreo estão melhorando e a demanda por viagens no final do ano está forte”, disse Januario Hostin Jr., gestor chefe da Leme Investimentos à Bloomberg.

Já a Embraer (EMBR3), que não é do setor aéreo, mas tem forte exposição a ele, informou em nota a venda de dois jatos Embraer 190 para a companhia alemã Aircraft Asset Management, pelo valor de US$ 79 milhões. As ações da fabricante de aeronaves operam com alta de 1,53%. 

Nova descoberta
A OGX Petróleo (OGXP3) finalizou a perfuração do poço 1-OGX-2A-RJS, localizado no bloco BM-C-41, em águas rasas da parte sul da Bacia de Campos, tendo encontrado indícios de hidrocarbonetos em cinco diferentes reservatórios. Segundo projeções preliminares, há um volume total de óleo recuperável entre 1 e 2 bilhões de barris. Os papéis da empresa avançam 2,36%.

Ratings da Cyrela
Voltando as atenções às notas de crédito corporativas, a Cyrela (CYRE3) teve seus ratings de probabilidade de inadimplência do emissor de longo prazo em moeda estrangeira e local elevados pela Fitch. O rating nacional de longo prazo também foi acrescido. “Os ratings refletem a posição da companhia como a maior incorporadora do mercado imobiliário brasileiro, a força da sua franquia e seu sólido e diversificado estoque de terrenos”, destacou a agência. Os ativos da companhia sobem 0,47%.

Ultrapar e JBS
Já a Ultrapar (UGPA4) anunciou a compra de um terminal de armazenagem de granéis líquidos no porto de Suape, em Pernambuco, por US$ 44 milhões. “A capacidade do terminal adquirido soma-se à atual capacidade de 540 mil metros cúbicos da Ultracargo, representando assim um aumento de 15% na capacidade total de armazenagem de granéis líquidos da empresa”, afirmou em comunicado. Os papéis da empresa recuam 1,97%.

Por fim, a JBS (JBSS3) enviou comunicado informando que o BNDESPAR aprovou o investimento na companhia por meio da aquisição de debêntures conversíveis em ações, que totalizam US$ 2 bilhões. As ações da maior produtora de carne do mundo registram valorização de 0,21%.

'Seu Maurício', da Iluminação, nos corredores da TV

Em uma noite repleta de pessoas ilustres e bem vestidas, por alguns instantes, os holofotes estavam voltados para um pernambucano do Recife, de 65 anos, que há quase 40 tem dedicado a sua vida a valorizar a aparição de celebridades, políticos e jornalistas na TV.

Encabulado, recebeu uma justa homenagem pelos ‘serviços prestados’ a um dos maiores sistemas de comunicação do Norte-Nordeste. Ele chegou até a conceder entrevistas, o que o deixou ainda mais retraído.

Mas a imagem que se tem dele muda completamente quando paramos por uns minutos para ouvir o que ele tem para falar. É encantador notar que toda aquela aparente timidez desaparece à medida que percebemos que ele carrega viva na memória grande parte da história de uma emissora de televisão.

Maurício José Moreira, mais conhecido pelos corredores da TV como ‘Seu Maurício’, da Iluminação, é um homem simples, de corpo miúdo e voz e olhar acanhados. Mas essa é a imagem que as pessoas que não o conhecem de perto têm dele, o que era o meu caso.

Foi necessário bem menos que meia-hora para descobrir um ‘Seu Maurício’ falador, brincalhão e, acima de tudo, dono de uma memória surpreendente.

Não precisei fazer muitas perguntas além da inevitável “Como foi que o senhor chegou aqui?” para o marceneiro que aprendeu ali a fazer iluminação de programas e telejornais dar início a uma verdadeira aula de história sobre a televisão pernambucana.

E que história! Na verdade, uma versão bem mais interessante, cheia de casos engraçados, constrangedores para os envolvidos e, sendo assim, inesquecíveis.

Como foi o caso de uma dona de boate muita famosa no Recife, uma tal de Luísa Helena, que fazia propaganda – naquela época, ao vivo – da Coca-Cola. À medida que narra a história, Seu Maurício dá vida à história ao acrescentar gestos e até o modo de falar da apresentadora que, depois de tomar um gole da bebida e dizer algo como “Que delícia!”, soltou a frase “Essa merda é ruim gelada, imagine quente!”.

Ele dá uma gargalhada gostosa. Em seguida, explica que tudo aquilo, que deveria ser um comentário de bastidor, chegou aos ouvidos de toda a audiência da época. “Foi um escândalo”, lembra ele.

E assim ‘Seu Maurício’ vai revelando a história que não consta no arquivo oficial da emissora, mas que chegou até os dias de hoje graças à memória de pessoas como ele. Histórias de um iluminador que passou quase um ano sem receber salário, mas mesmo assim continuou trabalhando na empresa.

“Mas por que, Seu Maurício?”, perguntei espantada. “Minha filha, isso aqui é como se fosse um vício! A gente se acostuma a fazer esse tipo de trabalho e, na hora que é pra trabalhar, esquece de salário, de tudo”, explica como se isso fosse a coisa mais natural do mundo. Pensando bem, é mesmo!

The system of slavery in Brazil was the longest and well structured of the Americas, with about 4 million Blacks being brought here who, enslaved over three centuries, built the fortune of the Brazilian ruling classes and increased that of the Europeans. But while they were enslaved in Brazil, the blacks resisted it in various forms: assassination of masters, of overseers, of jungle captains, flights, guerrillas, urban insurrections, quilombos. The quilombos were built into a form of basic resistance and spread from the XVII century to the XIX century, the most famous of these being Palmares.

The Republic of Palmares resisted with arms for almost a century, being defeated in 1695, 300 years ago, with the assassination of its chief, Zumbi.

Since then, Zumbi has become an example of courage and human dignity which inspired blacks throughout the country to break their shackles and he is today one of the heroes of the Brazilian people.

Palmares, more than signifying a place to which the blacks fled and found refuge, became a check on the slave system adopted in Brazil by the Portuguese colonizers. Initially formed by a few slaves who fled at the end of the XVI century, its population approached 25 to 30 thousand inhabitants, which for its population density in that epoch (the XVII century) was not insignificant. Located in the province of Pernambuco, today the area belongs to the State of Algoas, between the cities of Serinhaém (PE) and Vicosa (AL), in the Zone of Mata, an area of difficult access.

Palmares was an elected Republic, of free, united people, living communally and in prosperity. Besides blacks, there were also Indians and poor whites who fled the misery in which they lived on the sugar plantations.

Unlike the monoculture of the sugar cane of the colonizers destined for export, in Palmares they planted maize, beans, manioc, sugar cane, potatoes and vegetables. Ownership of land was collective, a tradition that the blacks brought from Africa, as well as for reasons of security, since to protect themselves from the attacks of the colonizers the whole population had to relocate from time to time to other regions.

There was also fishing and hunting, and the raising of hens and pigs. They extracted oil from the pulp of the palm trees. They worked in iron which was present in the region. They did artistic work in wood and ceramic. Their legislation was severe and there was the death penalty for robbery, adultery, murder and desertion. They spoke their own language which was a mixture of African languages, Portuguese and some indigenous languages. They practiced a synthetic religion which was a mixture of African and Christian beliefs.

Periodically the inhabitants of Palmares came down to the nearby cities to rescue other slaves, obtain arms, powder, tools and mete out justice to overseers.

The Torture of Slavery

The form utilized by the colonizers to cultivate the land in the country and to produce products for export was slavery. Initially with the Indians, later with the blacks. The system alienated the condition, the human identity of the slave. In the legislation in force in that epoch, the buying and selling of Negro slaves was regulated in the same section as that dedicated to animals.

The slaves worked from morning to night, without rest on Sundays and holidays. Those who worked in the cane fields and sugar mills had an average productive life of five to seven years. At 30 years, generally, they were physically exhausted and to the masters were no longer worth what they ate. Some were killed, others emancipated, but these were not suitable for any job or task and were only able to beg.

They were incessantly subjected to the terror of punishments, of tortures so that they would not stop working. For the slightest faults, they were tied to a tree trunk, with their feet, hands and neck immobilized in pieces of wood, for days, weeks or months. The whipping in the pillory, leaving the skin as raw flesh and afterward pouring salt and vinegar on it, were frequent and witnessed both by the slaves as by the master of the plantation and his family. Other forms of torture and sadism were employed to subjugate them. While there were many deaths, others sought to recapture their humanity by fleeing.

40 Expeditions Against Palmares

During almost a century, the Portuguese, then the Dutch, and then again the Portuguese attacked Palmares, in the hope of recapturing fugitive slaves and defeating the Republic which threatened them with new attacks and with a life that was more abundant, egalitarian and happy. There were about 40 expeditions, with the most experienced fighters of the crown, which achieved little or no results. The inhabitants of Palmares utilized the so-called “jungle warfare,” in which they avoided the enemy, with very rapid encounters, confusing him and hiding themselves in the jungle. The Palmareans also relied on news of the enemy expeditions from the slaves in the plantations and from the settlers with whom they maintained contact to buy arms and tools.

In 1677, an expedition commanded by Fernao Carrilho managed to wound Ganga-Zumba, at that time the supreme chief of Palmares, and to capture 200 Negroes, among them sons, nephews and grandsons of Ganga-Zumba. Carrilho reached the city of Porto Calvo announcing that he had destroyed Palmares, but he was not able to convince the governor Pedro de Almeida who understood that the Republic, with more than 25 thousand people, had not been defeated. He resolved then to seek negotiations with the Palmareans, which would provide him a breathing spell, since he was already without the resources to organize more and more expeditions.

Zumbi – General in Arms and Grand Chief

After the surrender [or capitulation] of Ganga-Zumba Zumbi, who was already recognized as a great warrior, a geat “general in arms,” led the resistance and took up residence in the capital of Palmares, having been acclaimed Grand Chief. Knwoing that he would have to confront new attacks of the oppressor, he organized life in the Republic in a manner that would prepare it for imminent war.

The Grand Chief was born in Palmares in the beginning of 1665, the year in which one of the expeditions against the Republic took some prisoners, among them Zumbi, who was only a few days old. The child was given as a present to a Portuguese priest, Antonio de Melo, who baptized him with the name Francisco. The priest taught him to read and to be an altar boy at the age of ten. According to a letter from the priest himself, the lad demonstrated “skill which I never imagined in the black race, and which I have very rarely seen among whites” and at the age of ten “knew all the Latin that he needed and continued with Portuguese and Latin very satisfactorily.” Surprisingly to the priest, at the age of 15 Zumbi fled with other blacks to Palmares. He would return three more times, as chief of Palmares, to visit the priest, whom he found in a situation of misery and he suffered rebuke from the residents for having been with Zumbi.

“Better to Die than to Live as a Slave”

For about twenty years, Zumbi was at the head of Palmares, defending at the side of his people the Republic which they had established. Many masters of plantations condemned these attempts at negotiations, but the most categorical of the arguments – against – was that of priest Antonio Vieira, who influenced the crown to desist from them and to prepare for a more decisive confrontation. For this, there was called up a Paulist, the colonial expedition leader Domingos Jorge Velho, the hunter of Indians and blacks, known as the major assassin of the country for his cruelty and barbarous methods. Jorge Velho made various expeditions against Palmares, from the end of 1691, without managing to succeed i his intentions.

In January of 1694, at the head of an army of nine thousand men, he left for the capital of Palmares. The solidity of the fortifications of the city left those who came there to fight surprised. Jorge Velho ordered his men to raise a counter-wall to be able to fight, but there army was bombarded by the Palmareans in this assault. The expedition leader ordered his men to construct, during the night, a second counter-wall, at an oblique angle to the Palmarean fortification. Zumbi, at dawn, saw the enemy maneuver and ordered the sentry to be executed for allowing this to take place unnoticed.

Next to this, there was an abyss and along this was a passageway that Jorge Velho did not manage to shut. Zumbi organized a contingent, which he joined, that moved along this passageway at night to attack the enemy from the rear. When a good part of the warriors had begun to pass the enemy sentry saw the maneuver and gave the alarm signal. Jorge Velho ordered his men to fire on them and against the city, with cannons, arms with which Zumbi had not counted. The soldiers penetrated the city and killed and decapitated those whom they saw in front.

The soldiers returned to the coast exulting in the defeat that they had inflicted on Palmares, believing that the valorous Zumbi had fallen. Domingos Jorge Velho was not so optimistic. In fact, Zumbi escaped with his life, at 39 years old, suffering much of the time from a leg that had been hit in combat. Shortly thereafter he was seen with his comrades attacking a small town in search of arms. He regrouped the surviving Palmareans and continued the activity of armed groups.

Antonio Soares, the leader of one of these groups, was captured and handed over to a Paulist column. He was subjected to tortures to tell the whereabouts of Zumbi. Having achieved nothing, they proposed to guarantee his life and liberty if he located the warrior chief. Antonio gave in and went to look for Zumbi. Having the enemies close but , Soares called for Zumbi. He appeared and prepared for an embrace when he was struck in the stomach by a blow of a dagger from Antonio Soares. Zumbi still struggled, killed his enemy, wounded several and fell dead. This was November 20, 1965.

His body, struck by fifteen bullet holes and innumerable dagger wounds was further mutilated, and then his head was separated from his body and carried off to Recife, wrapped in salt. There the governor ordered it impaled on a stick and it was placed in a public place in the city. The warriors who survived hid in the jungle to build new quilombos. One of the most famous was Cumbe, in Paraiba, which was only destroyed in 1731. In the XVIII century, revolts took place principally in Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro, Bahia, Goias and Mato Grasso.

In the capitalist system, which consists of irreconcilably hostile classes, the State is the institution organized as “a special force of repression” of the proletariat exploited by the bourgeoisie, the ruling class. It is fundamentally an instrument to guarantee the domination of the bourgeoisie, the exploitation of the working class and the other working people and all sorts of injustices against the people, repressing with violence the protests and revolts of the dominated, seeking to extend to the maximum the time of the domination of a minority of rich people over the great majority of the population. Therefore the most important sectors of the bourgeois State are those dedicated to repression (armed forces, police, justice and prisons) followed by the sectors responsible for the collection of taxes. These sectors never lack human or material resources.

Shaken by the proletarian revolutions that shook the world stimulating the rise of the mass movement and in the framework of the profound crisis of the capitalist system at the end of the 1920s, imperialism, trying to alleviate tensions in society, moved to combine repression with the provision by the State of some services demanded by the population. In the USA, in the 1930s, the “New Deal” signified heavy investment by the State in economic activity, providing jobs and seeking to avoid the aggravation of the crisis and the growth of revolutionary activity in that country. The resources of the State in health, education and public welfare programs led to the recognition of certain rights of the working people including the right to trade union organization. This is what the bourgeoisie calls the “welfare State.”

In the new framework of the world relation of forces, with the end of the USSR combined with a new period of aggravation of the crisis of imperialism, which demands the extraction on an ever increasing scale of the resources of the dependent countries, the politics of the “minimum State,” adopted by the governments, has as its objective to cut the resources applied in the social arena, with a consequent reduction of the framework of public servants, concentrating the state apparatus in its essential functions: the forces and structures of repression and the sectors for collecting taxes.

O último podcast me deixou numa vontade louca de falar um pouco mais de Pernambuco e seus músicos. Infelizmente, só ouvimos falar da Bahia (claro que a Bahia tem músicos fora de série, Caetano, Gil, João Gilberto…), mas nas ladeiras de Olinda muita coisa boa e original surgiu. O universo musical desse estado é amplo demais para ser discutido num blog, mas para se ter uma noção da história “recente” da música pernambucana basta se conhecer três nomes: Luiz Gonzaga, Alceu Valença e Chico Science.

O primeiro é um nome mais que conhecido por qualquer brasileiro (mesmo aqueles que não tem nenhum interesse por forró, baião e outros gêneros nordestinos, sabem quem é o grande mestre). Luiz Gonzaga nasceu em 1912, em uma cidadezinha chamada Exu. Seu pai, Januário, foi quem o ensinou a tocar o acordeão e foi com esse que Gonzagão popularizou um gênero tão nordestino chamado baião. Considerado um dos primeiros grandes artistas da MPB, nunca, em seus vários anos de carreira, perdeu o prestígio e sua canção Asa Branca, composta em 1947, figura entre uma das mais emblemáticas e importantes manifestações artísticas brasileiras (Caetano fez uma versão um tanto perturbadora de Asa Branca no lendário Phono 73, mas isso fica pra outro post). Foi esse pernambucano pé rachado que fez não só o seu estado, mas o Nordeste ser reconhecido e conhecido pelo resto do Brasil.

Paro por aqui, porque um post só para um estado grandioso como esse não é o suficiente, logo volto com mais, falando do lado rock’n'roll do cangaço musical brasileiro.

Eta Carinae contém uma das estrelas com maior massa que se conhece. Na verdade, trata-se de um sistema binário.

Neste sistema, uma estrela com massa em torno de 70 e outra com algo ao redor de 30 massas solares giram uma em torno da outra. Essa dança estelar tem um período de 5.53 anos.

Este período, e por consequência, o fato de que são duas e não uma só estrela foi uma descoberta do professor da USP Augusto Damineli.

A estrela maior é mais fria e tem temperatura superficial da ordem de 15000 K. Já a menor é mais quente e apresenta uma temperatura superficial da ordem de 30000 K. Elas emitem ventos fortes que interagem um com o outro de forma intensa e violenta.

Este sistema ainda intriga os cientistas porque só pode ser inferido de forma indireta já que está envolvido em uma espessa cortina de gás e poeira. Abaixo vemos eta Carinae em uma imagem do Hubble. Na verdade, o que vemos é o que foi expelido há centenas de anos atrás. O par de estrelas encontra-se bem no centro onde os lóbulos se encontram. Os dois lóbulos, que dominam o campo da figura abaixo, estendem-se em algo equivalente a 500 (quinhentos!!) Sistemas Solares.

Para se ter uma ideia, o último soluço de eta Carinae foi em meados de 1850 d.C., e naquele momento ela jogou fora (no meio interestelar) algo em torno de 10 massas solares. Naquele momento, tornou-se o segundo objeto mais brilhante no céu noturno.

Aqui, pode-se “brincar” um pouco através de uma ferramenta de ampliação em uma imagem de alta resolução do Hubble na direção da enorme nebulosa de Carina.

Esta nebulosa expande-se por algo em torno de 300 anos-luz e está distante de nós cerca de 7500 anos-luz. E nesta nebulosa enorme, dentre tantos outros objetos celestes que podem ser visualizados na imagem que comentei, encontra-se eta Carinae.

Comprovando a fama do par de estrelas aqui na Terra, achei algo curioso ao navegar pela internet. Há uma nova banda pernambucana chamada, Eta Carinae. Eles misturam vários ritmos e com um estilo próprio têm criado um excelente material.

Amigos que fazem a DIFERENAÇ!

A Terceira Semana de Fotografia do Recife acabou e deixou algumas reflexões, instigadas por fotógrafos, professores e demais artistas visuais.

Participei de uma leitura de portfólio com Juan Esteves, foi bem rápido enquanto ele espera um táxi e tomava um café. Neste espaço de tempo, nós olhamos três pequenos ensaios que levei. As idéias foram surgindo como o açúcar do café, o barulho detrás da porta e a noite com sua penumbra. No final da leitura do meu portfólio, fiquei bem empolgado pelas idéias de Juan e por ter entendido qual o significado desse contato e dessa troca.      

É muito desanimador ver todas as grandes oportunidades serem destinadas a uma determinada localidade, enquanto outras são esquecidas. O interior dos estados brasileiros são exemplo de como isso ocorre.

Qualquer novidade tecnológica ou grande investimento empresarial é sempre destinado aos grandes centros urbanos. Às pequenas cidades do interior, resta a aposentadoria dos idosos e os salários pagos pela prefeitura para sustentar a economia local.

Em Pernambuco, acredito que estejam ensaiando uma mudança favorável, pois a interiorização das universidades públicas, a instalação de indústrias e a duplicação de rodovias demonstram que o interior do estado tem potencial econômico.

Tudo isso, no entanto, ainda nos mantém em segundo ou terceiro lugar, pois o foco continua sendo a região metropolitana do Recife, quando o correto deveria ser não haver foco. Ter condições igualmente atrativas para as empresas.

Vamos ver como se desenrolam os acontecimentos dos próximos anos.

The Fastest Changing City in the Northeast State of Pernambuco

Often called the ‘Venice of Brazil,’ (I would like to know who in the world applied this non-sequitor to any place in Brazil) the breathtaking city of Recife still retains some of its Old World charm amidst all of the modernity of its high growth posture of the last years. The city is known for its artistic and folkloric traditions, music, dance, sculptures and paintings and I took the trouble of carrying so many of these back so that I still have them to enjoy and they are really different from any for vacation rental line those beaches and are generally of a higher standard than those of Rio.

When you decide to take a break from the wonderful yet over stimulating downtown Recife experience, you must visit the leafy suburbs which lie north of the center and which are dotted with fantastic museums and parks. To the south there is the modern beachside district of Boa Viagem. Other beaches are conveniently located both north and south of the city. Recife also offers animated, exciting nightlife which one would expect from a city of nearly two million. Boa Viagem has many bars, discos and dance halls. Forró, a local music expression, is an experience not to be missed and can be seen at Boa Viagem square or at Pavao Leao street. Boa Viagem is a safe and relaxed place, largely frequented by tourists (except on weekends, when the beach is thronged by attractive, interesting locals). The liveliest district is the Recife Island at the old town where you are guaranteed to have a good time. For those bar connoisseurs, definitely take a visit Rua do Apolo and its unique array of bars. Recife also offers excellent opportunities for shopping. From traditional handicrafts to modern conveniences, visitors can buy all of these and more at the many markets and malls around the city. The Casa de Cultura, a former prison that now houses handicraft and souvenir shops, is as enticing as it’s origin is bizarre.

If Recife has left you with remaining energy, put your feet to good use and take a walking tour of the city’s ancient monuments. There is no better way to see them. I met a friend on the beach who invited me up to his family home were they lavished me in all kinds of northeastern recipes, literally waved palm fronds over me while I was eating, were super anxious for me to try out every last kind of alcoholic beverage native to the area, and still write to me these many years later. Their sense of humor is not to be beat.

O Arquipélago de Fernando de Noronha é formado por vinte e uma ilhas, numa extensão de 26 km², tendo uma principal – a maior de todas também chamada “Fernando de Noronha” -, como única ilha habitada.

As demais estão contidas na área do Parque Nacional Marinho e são desabitadas, só podendo ser visitadas com licença oficial do IBAMA. São 17 quilômetros quadrados a 545 km da costa, onde vive uma população de apenas 2.100 habitantes e o turismo é desenvolvido de forma sustentável, criando a oportunidade do encontro equilibrado do homem com a natureza em um dos santuários ecológicos mais importantes do mundo.

Tonho Ceará fotografou ontem no Recife Antigo, mostrando toda sua sensibilidade com a luz. Um homem que preservou um fazer fotográfico de outros tempos, fotografando no presente com sua caixa preta do passado. Diferente de muitos, ele domina a caixa preta, é um “fotógrafo munido de aparelho e não um aparelho munido de fotógrafo”.

“What the legendary soccer player Pelé is to sport in Brazil, the author ´Clarice´ is to that country’s literary culture. Stunningly brilliant, beautiful and enigmatic, the daughter of Russian-Jewish émigrés achieved instant celebrity at the age of 23 with the publication of her debut novel Near to the Wild Heart.” This is how Amazon book reviewer Lauren Nemroff introduced Clarice Lispector in “Amazon Best of the Month, August 2009“ referring to Benjamin Moser’s biography Why This World.

Whilst Pelé may have been “stunningly brilliant”, it may be stretching the analogy too far with the descriptions of “beautiful and enigmatic”, which Clarice certainly was. She has even been described as, “that rare person who looked like Marlene Dietrich and wrote like Virginia Woolf.” (Salamon, J. (March 11, 2005). An Enigmatic Author Who Can Be Addictive. New York: New York Times).

Of Moser´s Biography Nemroff said, “Now, after years of research on three continents, drawing on previously unknown manuscripts and dozens of interviews, Benjamin Moser demonstrates how Lispector’s art was directly connected to her turbulent life.” and, “Benjamin Moser’s, Why This World makes up for this long drought by offering a detailed and dramatic biography of Lispector’s incredible life and times. Based on new interviews with family and friends, recovered manuscripts, and other fresh sources, Moser crafts a moving and tangible portrait of the famously inscrutable Clarice.”

The New Biography

Clarice Lispector (1920-1977), is recognized as one of Latin America´s greatest writers and is only now being discovered by English readers, surprising given that “Clarice’s beauty, genius, and eccentricity intrigued Brazil virtually from her adolescence.”

Born into a Jewish family amidst the horrors of post-World War I Ukraine, Chaka Lispector was to escape to Brazil in 1922 and be re-named Clarice. She was to spend many if her early years living a humble existence in Northeast Brazil. First in Macaeio, Alagoas, then three years later in the Jewish neighborhood of Boa Vista in Recife, Pernambuco, where a monument to her exists today.

Whilst in Recife, her mother died (1930) at the age of forty-two, when Clarice was nine years old. Her father continued to struggle economically, but Clarice was still able to attend the Colégio Hebreo-Idisch-Brasileiro, which taught Hebrew and Yiddish in addition to the usual subjects. In 1932, she gained admission to the Ginásio Pernambucano, the most prestigious secondary school in the state at the time. A year later, she “consciously claimed the desire to write.”

In 1935, Pedro Lispector decided to move his family to the then-capital, Rio de Janeiro, where he hoped to find greater prosperity for them. There Clarice became a law student seeking justice for prisoners and then a journalist.

Around 1943, around the time of her marriage to a diplomat she published her first book, the critically acclaimed Near to the Wild Heart. Success in her career was not reflected in her challenging family and personal life. She had a longtime love for the homosexual poet Lúcio Cardoso among others, and one of her sons was diagnosed as schizophrenic fostering a growing sense of isolation in her.

Several of Lispectors works relate to her time in Northeast Brazil. Perhaps most famous of them was her last novel,  The Hour of the Star, whose main character Macabéa, a poor typist from Alagoas who is lost and isolated in Rio de Janeiro. This character, one of the most famous in Brazilian literature, has a name that refers to the Maccabees, and represents one of the very few explicit Jewish references in her work. The book focuses on Brazilian poverty and being marginalized.

Soon after The Hour of the Star was published, Lispector was diagnosed as having inoperable ovarian cancer. She died on the eve of her 57th birthday and was buried on December 11, 1977, at the Jewish Cemetery of Cajú in Rio de Janeiro.

A recent research revealed what the foreign travellers most appreciate in Brazil. The top four included several facts related with the nature, but the interesting point in fact is the first position. People, was stated by most of the travellers and therefore stands at the number one position.

1. 

   Beach life

   People – Having people at the top of the list is an honour for any country. This means that the hospitality and the joy of brazilians is clearly visible for tourists visiting the country. In general the life has an easy-going rhythm and brazilians interact gladly with the foreigners. Here you will not stay at closed resort, but get mixed with the people and enjoy the same things as the brazilians do. I wonder if there is any other place on the earth where the joy of life is as visible as it is in Brazil. There may be many people with less conditions, but most of the will never lose their faith or the joy of life. If you come from a country with high level of self service you will also find it marvellous to be fully served at the stores,  bars and restaurants, and still you will not face disturbingly persisting sellers on the streets or at the beach.

2. 

   Country side

   The beauty of the nature – I would say that the second postition should be the beauty and the variety of the nature. As a huge country Brazil has an incredible variety of eco-systems depending on the part of the country. The beauty of the nature consists of numerous beaches, tropical vegetation, dunes, canyons, rainforest, waterfall, mountains, lagoons, lakes and rivers. There are extremely dry areas in Brazil and on the other hand a large part of the country is covered by rainforest. For sure the nature of this country offers something for each and every traveller, the question is do you really know all that Brazil has to offer?

3. 

   Endless beaches

   Beaches and the sea - Brazil has long coast with large number of beautiful beaches, some of the ideal for surfing, others for diving or snorkeling and almost all of them perfect for sunbathing and swimming. It’s not long time ago that I read an interesting review related to tourism in Brazil. The author said that Brazil may not have the most beautiful beaches of the world, compared to Southern Pacific of Maldives for example,  but Brazil certainly has the funniest beaches of the world. After having travelled widely around the world, I have to agree with the author of this article, Brazil definitely has the funniest beaches of the world and the best point is that many of them are among the most attracting ones as well. In Brazil beaches are like living-rooms, going to the beach is part of the culture and the daily life of brazilians. Here beaches are public and legally an access to any of them cannot be denied. This is why the coast of Brazil is not filled with resorts with private beaches, where only the clients can have an accesss. To be sincere, I think that is something Brazil should be proud of and this is why there is no other beach life like in Brazil. Being in the beach with the brazilians, you will quickly realize why people are in the top one position of the research. The joy of life is visible everywhere and there is always a beach bar to serve you whenever you are thirsty or hungry.

4. 

   Tropical vegetation

   Tropical climate - Thanks to the geographical position of Brazil, almost the whole country has tropical climate. This means that sunshine is basically guaranteed at any time of the year, at least in some part of the country. That’s why there are two basic things you should pay attention to before booking your trip to Brazil. First of all, if you have decided to travel during a specific time check out the climatical conditions in different parts of Brazil and choose your destination based on that. On the other hand, if you always wanted to visit certain area check out when is the best season to travel there, or at least when visiting those places is not recommendable and schedule your trip according to that. Right after that you are ready to enjoy the tropical climate and the sun shine of Brazil!
