In honor of seeing Neko Case at the Moon tonight, I am going to take a look back at many of the live music shows I have seen over the years. Some good, some, well, not so much. From the Big Sombrero to Jannus Landing, U2 to De La Soul, I have seen some weird, wild stuff.

Starship. There. I said it. My name is Lyssa and Starship was my first concert. I went with my sister. We saw them in Peoria, a city that was not built on rock and roll. I wanted my first concert to be Loverboy or Prince — two shows I have since seen — alas, it wasn’t meant to be. (For the record, I only saw Loverboy in 2008 because they played after a Tampa Bay Rays game, and they sucked.)

U2. The first time I saw U2, it was the Joshua Tree Tour, 5 December 1987 (the day after my birthday!) at Tampa Stadium. My boyfriend bought my ticket ($18.50, I still have the stub, of course), and I ended up breaking up with him before the concert. We traded tickets (I got the good ones), so I got to sit with my friend Jenny, whose dad drove us to the show. Fantastic. Amazing. Awesome. I consider this my first “real” concert. Seeing U2 in that stadium was one of the best times of my life. Seriously. I also saw U2’s Elevation tour at the Ice Palace on 1 December 2001. Another birthday gift ($110), and another boy — this time I was just about to break up with him. I guess I should be glad I didn’t go see U2 in Tampa this year.

Depeche Mode. So many Depeche shows, so many good times. Of course, I remember the show I couldn’t go to because of a freakin’ hurricane. Thank you, Hurricane Wilma, for canceling the kickoff show of DM’s Playing the Angel tour. I promoted the show with this great piece I wrote for the Miami New Times, and scored a free ticket and access to the band. Fuck you, Wilma. Well, I will always have the World Violation Tour, the Devotional Tour, and the Exciter Tour, but I will always remember the one that washed away. Wait, I will also remember the Devotional Tour, when I was in the second row and made eye contact with David Gahan as we sang “Stripped” and danced as one. *sigh* Yes, that makes everything better. Phew.

R.E.M. The Green Tour was a fun show. It was our senior year of high school, right before we graduated, and I went with a bunch of my girlfriends. It was at the USF Sun Dome, which isn’t the best venue, but it was still great to see R.E.M. It just sucks that my most vivid memory of that concert is of the drunk guy who almost puked on me. I jumped out of the way just in the nick of time.

Lollapalooza. It was the 9 August 1991, and I had just moved to Boston. My friend Holly and I scored free — and awesome — tickets to go see the festival at Great Woods. Siouxsie and The Banshees were on that tour, but didn’t play because the bitch got sick. We did get to see Jane’s Addiction, Living Colour, Nine Inch Nails, Ice-T, the Butthole Surfers and the Henry Rollins Band. Well, I slept through Living Colour — until the hippies began throwing sod and I got hit in the head. Not cool. Anyone who knows me knows how much I hate being dirty (when I’m not prepared to be dirty; camping doesn’t count). I was wicked cranky until Perry Farrell got on stage. “Jane Says” made it all better. Oh, here’s a photo from a yacht part I went to with Perry. It was during WMC in Miami, and Sasha & Digweed were the DJs for the party on a boat. Sweet.

Perry Farrell and his lovely wife

The Lemonheads. I met Evan Dando when I was living in Boston, and I had a huge crush on him. I was very excited about going to see him at the Masquerade in Atlanta. I went with my crazy friend Kim, and I lost her two minutes after we got inside. I didn’t care. I was used to it. I had staked out my spot by the stage and I was going to stare at Evan during the entire show. I bonded with some girls around me and had a great time. After the second encore, the lights came on and a woman came on stage, grabbed the mike and shouted, “Is there a Lyssa Oberkreser in the crowd? Lyssa?” OMG. It was my moment. Evan recognized me and wanted me to come backstage! OMG. The girls around me screamed and boosted me up on stage. I was giddy. The lights were on me and everyone knew that I was special. Evan picked me! {flutters} Um, yeah. Not so much. It wasn’t that at all. It was my friend, my drunk friend who passed out backstage, and I was called upon to claim her drunk ass and take her home. KHAAAAAN!!!!!!! (The second time I saw the Lemonheads was at Jannus Landing, and I ran into my friend GeorgeAnn, which was very cool.)

Moby. On tour for “Play,” you wouldn’t think that Moby would put on a good live show, but it was fantastic. Great outdoor courtyard venue, perfect weather, and good friends. But the meat! My G-D, the meat! There I was, watching Moby the vegan while choking on the smoke and smell of grilled meat. There had to have been about 10 sausage vendors around that courtyard, and it was impossible to get away from all of the smell of burning dead animals. Un-freakin’-believable.

Elvis Costello. The absolute worst show I have ever seen in my life. Seriously. It was at the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center in 2004. I went with my friend Nick (“Hey, Leese! You wanna smoke some marijuana and go see Elvis Costello?”), and I fell asleep. Elvis only played ballads (awww! He was in wuv!) and it was a crowd of older people, meaning that I could hear beeping hearing aids throughout the show. BO-RING. Hated it. Huge disappointment.

Prince. When I was in the 6th grade, I begged my mom to let me go see Prince. Of course, she said no. I had no idea what a “pocket full of horses, Trojan and some of them used” meant, but I thought Prince was hot and I loved him. Flash forward 20 years. My friend Nick had an extra ticket for Prince’s 2004 Musicology tour at the St. Pete Times Forum (“Hey, Leese! You wanna smoke some marijuana and go see Prince?”), and I was beyond excited. Awesome show. Definitely in my top 5 favorite concerts of all time. Prince performed for nearly three hours. It was incredible. Good things do come to those who wait.

Wilco. Saw them twice. Once at the Tampa Theatre, the other time at the Pompano Beach Amphitheater. Both shows were fantastic. Great venues, great band. Wilco puts on an awesome show when the members aren’t too high.

Sharon Jones and The Dap-Kings. Wow. Nothing like saving the best for last. Not the best show. Oh, no. The best story, for sure. The entire night is enough for a solid book chapter. Here you will get the sweet and condensed version. I hadn’t really eaten all day, I did some serious bar-hopping (and stuff) before heading to the show at Club Downunder, and I fainted. Yep. First time I ever fainted. I once experienced the almost-fainting thing, but I had never fainted before the night of Sharon Jones. Listening to the opening act, I started to feel it. I had the tunnel vision going on, it was closing in, and I could no longer focus on the fiddle and accordion players on stage. I was going down. Only, I thought I could fight it. I fought something, or someone. I have no idea how long I was blacked out, I just remember waking up on the floor. A friend was holding my glasses. Some kid was handing me a bottle of water. I could see my date’s feet next to me, but I was too dizzy and too embarrassed to look up at him. I fainted. In public. I was that girl. Mortified. Well, at least I didn’t puke or piss myself, right? The good news? I fucking rallied like a champ and didn’t miss one note of (the very short) Sharon Jones. ROCK ON!

Here’s to a good show tonight, with good friends, beautiful music, and no fainting!

Have you checked out Ziggy Marley’s new release Family Time? Or Peter Himmelman’s My Trampoline? Maybe you’re waiting for Tuesday’s release of Dan Zanes’ 76 Trombones?

If so, you either have kids under the age of 10 or just enjoy some serious musicians taking on some family-friendly fare.

The Los Angeles Times has a nice feature today on how each of these established artists is leading a trend that is shaping a new sound for kids that includes not just “goofy props and colorful costumes” but other more subtle music geared to address a void in popular children’s music.

Himmelman puts it this way: “Somebody had an idea you’re going to make a kids record and dumb it down. Kids aren’t dumb. You’re never as intelligent as when you’re a kid. I try to be careful not to adopt this oversized adult posture. I’m writing exactly the same way as I write for adults, except I’m careful to write about subjects that children will have a context for.”

And, though it’s hardly a sensation that’s sweeping the nation (save for the few artists lucky enough to receive exposure on children’s television programming), a number of music festivals have worked to legitimize the music by including kids stages as a key element of their multitude of offerings. Perry Farrell’s Kidzapalooza is but one example of the evolution of the “scene”.

Bottom line is that there is a lot of good music out there that should keep getting attention. And I’m glad to see legitimately talented musicians taking on the task.

Forget the stupid term “kindie rock”. Focus on the artists like Zanes (the “daddy” of the scene?), proudly declaring, “I feel like I’m working at a much higher creative level than I ever have.”

i.            Um guitar hero controverso e parcialmente nu chamado DAVE NAVARRO;

ii.            Um fundo de palco psicodélico e hipnótico;

iii.            Um vocalista (PERRY FARRELL) chic-andrógino-performático que sobreviveu as mais loucas experiências dos anos 90, incluindo o HIV;

iv.            BAILARINAS ASIÁTICAS minimamente vestidas;

…She gets mad
Starts to cry
She can´t hit
She don’t mean no harm
She just don’t know
What else to do about it…

I had the privilege of photographing Jane’s Addiction at Voodoo Experience this year. Now, for those that haven’t met me, I’m pretty short and it was a pretty intense photo pit, so I was only able to get shots of Dave Navarro and Perry Farrell. Still, I think they came out pretty well for being blocked by tall chicks on stools and my inability to breathe. Enjoy!

Pra alavancar a venda dos CDs, os compact-discs vinham com faixas extras – “Edge of the World”, no caso de “The Real Thing”, o terceiro do FNM.

Muitos deixaram saudade.

“From Out of Nowhere”, “Be Aggressive”, “Surprise!

Palmeiras!” pro pessoal do Faith No More.

Embora seja baseado no extraordinariamente bem sucedido Murciélago LP640, o design exterior do Reventón é completamente novo.

Go All the Way/ Perry Farrell

A comparação

Jane’s addiction is the symbol of alternative rock through the late 80s and early 90s and Noth

Jane’s addiction is the symbol of alternative rock through the late 80s and early 90s and Nothing’s Shocking is their Led Zeppelin IV – a masterpiece which encompassed all the skills of the band and defined their roots and musical style. Namely, this record revolves around a lot of funk and metal – inspired mainly by Dave Navarro and Perry Farrell. However, neither of the two singles released received the credit or fame like they deserve.

Opening with Up The Beach, it provides a silent and overdriven guitar extended guitar chords to follow – reminding me of the 70s psychadelic and prog rock. Some beautiful phrases of guitar mixed with the occasical Farrell lyric present an ideal opening track showing what Jane’s Addiction is – at least musically at first.

Ocean Size is like Up The Beach, even with a similar title, at first. Soft soothing acoustic guitar arpeggios until the rock gods come crashing down – with heavy percussion, lyrics and guitar riffs. Throughout the song, Farrell contrasts it with Navarro’s acoustic guitar track to his typical metal inspired solos. A beautifully wriiten song with contrasting styles through the song – typical of Jane’s Addiction.

Following we have Had A Dad and we are introduced to the funk metal that Jane’s Addiction is known for. Fast tempo, with a catchy riff and goes right into guitar solos early on in the track. Lyrically, it is why I love Farrell and Jane’s Addiction with pauses in the track for the occasional yelp or caw.

Ted, Just Admit It… is slower with a ‘cool’ bassline and Farrell uses very strange sounds instead of those usual English words in the beginning of the track. Reminding me of funk jazz with a rock theme to it, we have very unique guitar licks with no real structure and is in real contrast to the repeated lyric ‘Nothing Shocking’ much like the album cover – two naked Siamese twins which is, well quite shocking to the normal human, but of course we are talking about Jane’s Addiction here.

Setting the tone for the album, it follows with several other tracks of similar style before we reach Mountain Song, the first single of the album, although the video clip was not initially released due to explicit content. A strong and catchy bassline, which really shows what alternative rock is and should be – hard rock and punk inspired music and uses some very good melody and the guitar effects make it even better – with overdrive and some short delay, I could listen to the track all day.

Idiots Rule follows and uses some more funk inspired guitar solo introductions with trumpet, and this really does make it alternative with extra and unneccesary instruments, well at least we thought that before. A strong bassline with a hint of slap makes it unnoticed due to the other instruments present but listen with good equipment, it makes it so much better.

Jane Says – the other single on the album, opens with the acoustic chord progression mixed with Farrell’s unique voice and this follows through the whole track making in more contrast and showing that Jane’s Addiction is more that fret-bashing and funk-metal solos. Although Farrell’s voice is so powerful that it almost takes over instead of the guitar.

Closing with Pig’s in Zen makes a good album an amazing album. Metal inspired riffs with short licks make it a great song to rock out to and even though Farrell’s lyrics are quite overpowering, the fantastic bassline and guitar takes over – just like all rock bands should. Cannot wait for February, 2010 – Soundwave is gonna go off!!!!

8/10

Upcoming review… I’m leaning towards The Get Up Kids or another minor act on the Lineup. Any requests?

Clear skies prevailed overhead, but underfoot the trodden earth remained in a state of mud. Indicative of the diversity of the Austin music scene, the day progressed from dance pop to Texas rock to country to hip-hop-jam-band fusion to pure grunge rock.

The day began with the light-hearted dance pop of the Atlanta-based group the The B-52’s.
From the pop of the 1980s and 199s I transitioned to the alternative and grunge rock sounds of the North Texas-based rock band The Toadies. The sounds of the rock music of the 1990s and 2000s elicits memories about my teenage years. People danced, sang, and cried. It was kind of like a spiritual revival. Michael Franti and Spearhead are a must see live music act. Their musical power cannot be understated.

After being awed by Spearhead I turned around to see Pearl Jam open their set with the 1990s power ballad “Why Go” from the legendary album Ten. We raced to the front of the main stage as the spectacular day of live music continued. The Pearl Jam set list included many well-known songs like “Corduroy” and my favorite tune “Elderly Woman Behind The Counter in a Small Town.”
From newer tracks like “World Wide Suicide” to old-school favorites like
”Even Flow,” Pearl Jam wailed and rocked and kicked out the jams. I had heard a lot of hype about Pearl Jam and it seems to all be true. These guys a true blood rock and rollers.

First of all, Matt Cameron does a terrific job. Second, could there be a more dramatic difference between two “dynamic” lead singers? Perry Farrell makes Eddie (who, in his defense, is purposefully taking a back seat here) look like a tired old homeless man.

Billy Corgan and Spirits in The Sky
The Hotel Cafe, LA
August 31, 2009

"Fall into the grace of where you are. . ."

It’s not often a rock band plays The Hotel Cafe. I may have just pissed off some bands that play The Hotel Cafe. However, it is rare that a true, plugged-in rock show takes place at the small venue most often recognized as the home of outstanding singer-songwriters.

But, it has happened: Perry Farrell has made a couple guest appearances at The Hotel Cafe, including one time with his side project, Satellite Party; Billy Corgan has played there previously (although it was a mellow, acoustic, solo show); Pete Townshend has stepped foot on that stage a few times; Butch Walker had people standing on tables at one time; and Cypress Hill once turned the intimate room into a hip-hop club.

Yet, for the most part The Hotel Cafe is a place where people watch quietly as songwriters sing about break-ups and alcohol. The beginning of tonight’s show was in line with that vibe, although rather than droning on about heartbreak, Corgan sang melodically about love.

Navarro and Corgan during the electric part of the show

Corgan was joined on-stage by Dave Navarro, 19-year old Mike Byrne from Portland who was chosen to play drums in the band after Corgan placed an open-call for drummers online, Mark Weitz on keyboards, Kerry Brown on percussion, Ysanne Spevak on violin, Linda Strawberry on backing vocals, Kevin Dippold on flute and mandolin, and bassist Mark Tulin.

When the mellow set of songs about love, devotion, and dreams came to an end Corgan had a surprise for the audience. Well, it wasn’t a surprise to everyone, just to those of us who didn’t see his note on SmashingPumpkins.com today: “The tour ought to end with a bang though, as tonight marks the faux Halloween show! Everyone is expected to show up in costume and there will be a costume contest held during the show.”

Intermission: Costume Contest

Corgan said he only expected seven people to show up in costume. Instead, there were about 50 people dressed in costumes ranging from an elderly angel to a pregnant alien. While unnecessary, the costume contest was entertaining, especially with Corgan’s sarcastic banter.

Throughout the show there was “that one guy” who kept disturbing the peace by shouting out obnoxious comments. So when the guy belted out, “What’s your costume, Billy?” Corgan responded, “My costume is a guy who fuckin’ hates you. . . it’s a little subtle, but I hope you feel it. . .” That was the last we heard from “that guy.”

The costume contest wasn’t the only form of audience participation. Corgan also enlisted the crowd to sing along to one of the songs. He got everybody going, singing “oh, oh, oh” and then realized he may have asked the audience to sing too many rounds. “It seems I made a rare mistake,” Corgan admitted.

Navarro and Corgan

After the costume contest Spirits in The Sky turned on the rock show. Navarro and Corgan crushed it on electric guitars. At one point, Corgan requested the bow from Spevak’s violin – and I don’t use words like this lightly (or ever, actually) – shredded.

The band played for 2 hours. Or just under 2-hours when you factor in the costume contest. When the band exited the stage, the house music came on and the musicians all went back to the dressing room instead of staying at the side of the stage, behind the curtain. This is usually a sign that show has ended and at least half the audience left. But the loudest yellers remained and did not stop screaming or clapping until Spirits in The Sky returned for one more song.

“You asked for it. . . ” Corgan warned.

Corgan playing guitar with the bow of Spevak's violin

Day 3 (Saturday) started out pretty early. I was first one out the door. Everyone was kinda wanted to do their own thing for a minute and I was no exception. I was going to catch lunch with my buddy Ben in Lincoln Park at this place called Duffy’s. It’s a Michigan bar, which would explain the super lame maize and blue color scheme!

Duffy's in Lincoln Park

After lunch with Ben and his friend Nick- which included checkin out crazy homeless dudes across the street, making friends with our waitress who wouldn’t get on camera because she was SAG (but we still made a date to be there for brunch on Sunday), and an awesome burger + beers- Nick and I cabbed it to Lolla to catch some more shows. I didn’t really have a whole lot in the morning I wanted to see, so I didn’t feel bad abt drinkin most of the afternoon away with those guys, lol. I wanted to check out Mike Snow, but blew that one. Same with Atmosphere. Funny story about why I wanted to see Atmosphere. 1st because my old roommate Jesse talked abt the guy nonstop for 2 years, so I wanted to see what the fuss was abt. 2nd because I had met this girl in Columbus a cpl weeks prior who got super excited when I said I’d be in the Chi for Lolla (so would she). So we exchange numbers and literally the next day she deleted me. I txt her friend as to why she did and she said, “she didn’t think she would hear from you, so she deleted you.” um… ok. So I txted her like wtf?! I told you we’d link up in Chicago. No response….super weird. But she also gushed abt Atmosphere so I was hoping I’d catch her eye and go feign to take her backstage to spite her. No dice

My friend Molly txted me to meet her at the Chairlift performance. Right when I came in they were doing Snoop Dogg’s, ‘Sensual Seduction.’ I personally love that song, so I was into it, but the sound was horrible! That sound guy was havin a super off day.

There were some mad hippies dancing in front of us the whole time too, so that was pretty cool to see. Like LA hippies, not fake ass Midwest ones.

Back to the dj stage it was for me and I caught the last little bit of Perry Farrell performing with Porno for Pyros. They were his special guest. Along with Perry’s wife. She’s not bad lookin at all. She also had some super hot friends of hers onstage. She wore this super short mini and kept kicking her legs in the air! Caught panties like 15 times in 10 minutes!

Their kids were sitting on stage as well. All 3 of them had their protective headphones on and flip camera’s out, catching mommy and daddy’s performance.

Perry Farrell's kids (w/grandma)

It never ceases to amaze me how people can idolize someone and place them on this revered pedestal, but to their kids, they are just mom and dad. Funny how that works. Perry finished off his set with a new track that he worked on with Kaskade called, ‘Machine Girl.’ I don’t think it’s out yet. Danny Masterson was in the back, so I rapped with him and his boy for a little bit. Supposedly he’s comin to Cleveland in a cpl weeks (dj Mom Jeans in the house!). Jesse is in love with him btw. Wanted to push our departure to Chicago back a day because he thought he was gonna meet him, lol. He wound up meeting him on Friday night anyways. He prob drew wood, lol. Talked to Kaskade after the show, he said he hasn’t been here in a while, but he really likes Cleveland. Way to go my man!

There wasn’t really a whole lot of action after that. I watched a little bit of Hercules and Love Affair, but the set was a little too slow for me. I was in the mood for some bangers. LA Riots was on afterwards anyways. I walked around a little bit and caught the tail end of Santigold. That show was freakin packed! I don’t know how I found my friends in that crazy ass crowd. She even brought the GZA onstage with her, much props. I dipped out of there when the show was over and headed to LA Riots. Set was good but man, that dude is a piece of work. I walked over to him and introduced myself (we met earlier in Cleveland). He proceeded to talk abt how ppl at Ultra fucked up the monitors and he wasn’t treated right by the owner/manager, there was a descrepancy with the money, the list goes on and on. Needless to say, he wasn’t happy. He vowed Ultra would never get another AM Only dj and he was gonna come back to Cleveland somewhere and do a free show (I hope he follows through on that party). I would be seeing this guy around everywhere I went. And everywhere we were, he had smokin hot girls with him. I gotta move to LA and be a dj, hot damn!

Backstage waiting for Diplo to come on I noticed a rather peculiar thing…. The dude was wearin a damn 3 piece suit! Blue pinstriped suit and vest, with a white shirt and some brown boat shoes, no socks. Pimpin! It was so fucking hot too, I can’t believe he didn’t pass out wearin that. I almost did and I was rockin a t-shirt and shorts. He played during TV on the Radio AND Ben Harper, but oh well… And he trainwrecked a cpl times, oh well… and he played a lot of other people’s tracks, oh well…. I was waiting for major lazer stuff, grimy diplo stuff, and any other kind of DIPLO stuff, oh well…. Maybe next time.

So lookie loo… I got a text from Katie (girl from columbus, not the deleting girl), and I was super pumped. I had barely seen her since we had been there and I was not happy about that. I figure meeting someone is cool, finding out that you’ll both be going to the same event is even cooler. Meeting up out of town away from your friends and outside influences should be a perfect time to really develop a repor, which is great, but none of that really happened . It was like she left her phone at the hotel (she must not really be a txting kind of girl. Old school, I like that, lol). So I meet up with Katie backstage at Yeah Yeah Yeahs. There’s this little artists village, complete with food and free booze. Katie goes to get us drinks while I wait in line to get in the opera box to watch YYY’s. The crowd was freakin sick!!! There’s obviously no way we were gettin in there, the line was super packed, and there was only 50 ppl allowed in at a time, so whatever. As I’m waiting…. bam! Joy Bryant comes out of nowhere. Somebody w/ her was trying to talk the crew into letting her up there, but no dice. I introduced myself and asked when her next project was. We had a very short back and forth. Then I think I fainted (I really didn’t faint, but I wish I would have, lol).

When I came to, Ben Harper was standing in front of me! Now, all the time I get “Anybody ever tell you that you look like Ben Harper?” I hate when ppl come up to me and say stuff like that. 9 times out of 10, the person is the exact opposite of you, but they wore the same shirt or something, people are stupid like that. But I swear, I’ll never think bad of anyone who says that to me again cause I freakin do! I said hello and he must have realized it too because he gave me a funny look like, “damn, this dude looks like me!” We had a brief convo and he said he loved playing at the Cleveland House of Blues (shouts to Carrie, Elise, and Rickey!). I’m meeting people that are showing Cleveland love all OVER the place!

Katie comes back, we watch a brief bit of the show, then we must part. I have to get to my friends before we are lost in the crowd and we never make it home! I head over to catch the end of Bassnectar with my peeps. Watched that for a while, then thought we should head out a little early to beat the crowd. We spend an hour the night before looking for a taxi, lol. We passed by the Clarence Buckingham Memorial Fountain on our way out (not right time of day, but I wanted to show you the dope-ness)

I guess somebody jumped in there at some point in the weekend. It’s really big when you see a person in it. Check it out here. I’m sure that guy spent the night in jail… bummer. We rolled out of the festival and made our way to the train station. I was going to take the subway in Chicago for the first time! I was pretty stoked. btw, the fare there is $2.50, so don’t complain Cleveland! We were on our way there, but Jimmy John’s was callin our name. So quick pit stop there, super packed train ride later (I felt like I was in Tokyo, getting crammed in by a wrangler), waste of time stop at the grocery store for headache medicine we already had, shower, and I was ready to hit the streets. Big night ahead of me…. I was gonna go to some hot parties, kick it with Lindsay Lohan (explained below), see Katie, and all of my dreams were gonna come true, right? Wrong.

Earlier that day I met this girl Evan. She’s a freelance photog from Miami. She said Samantha Ronson was spinning at hotspot Angels & Kings, Lohan was comin thru, and she was at that table. So I peaced out to my dudes and rolled over to A&K. Shit was packed!!!!! I hit Evan up and ask her to come get me. I approach the bouncer and tell him that my friend is on the list and has a table. If she came out to get me, would that be ok? He says, “yeah, get in line.” I’m thinking how is she gonna see me if i’m standing all the way in the back of this long ass line? So obviously I don’t. She comes out, I see her, she points to me, and then the bouncer shoves her back inside. I say “hey sir, that was the friend I was talking about. She has a table and knows the dj” His reply? “I don’t care, we are at capacity, get in line.” ANOTHER photog I met comes out to holler, asks the bouncer if I can roll in with him (he’s with Evan), and he flat out says no. Photog is like sorry dude, i’m in. Have a good one, lol! Guess I can’t blame him. Welcome to Chicago sucka! Guess my hot streak couldn’t last forever…

Not for the faint of heart!

I pick myself up, get that dirt off my shoulders and hop in a taxi. “Hard Rock Hotel please,” I say to the cabbie. We’re ripping through downtown at breakneck speed cause Santigold, Passion Pit, and GZA are performing live. Plus there’s an open bar. Plus I know ppl there. So i’m thinking to myself…. JP gave me this pass, so I know I’m allowed to get in, but i heard there’s a line, so maybe my artist credentials will work right? Dumbass…. maybe it was because I didn’t want to abuse my priviliges and soil my name, or maybe because I was scared I’d get checked, but I didn’t get in right away. I asked the bouncer at the door and showed him my artist creds, he’s like “ok… now get in line.” I see some guy who obviously is working the party, but I can’t get close enough to get his attention. I don’t want that bouncer bouncin my ass to the street. The guy comes back and lets a cpl people in. Then he yells, ‘we’re at capacity, these ppl have been waiting for an hour and they aren’t coming in. no one is coming in.” Fuck that I say, I’m not getting denied twice. So some lady walks out and she has a staff badge on. I’m like can i get in, i’m with the band. She sees my creds and tells me she’s going to inform someone that talent is outside and needs to get in. Good thing I didn’t hold my breath! So the guy comes out again and I get his attention and say hey, i’m not tryin to be pushy, but I’m here with the band and they are already here and I just wanna get in. The golden doors open and i’m on the scene! Worked like a charm!

So I make it in there and can’t find any of my new peeps. I’m walkin around and catch the last bit of Passion Pit perform.

I came too late for Santi and GZA. I start pounding doubles (hey they’re free!), and continue the search. There’s another side to the party and I try to walk in there, but they say it’s VIP only and that’s the exit. If I want to get in, I have to go to this other door. I walk up and flash my artist creds…. Good to go. I’ve gained access to the next level, lol. Once I get in there, I see all the ppl i’ve been hanging with… Vyle, Victor, JP, Nelson, and lo and behold…. Daniel from fuckin LA Riots. He’s rockin a trio of ladies, and he’s talkin to another one. Nelson hands me a corndog and i head straight to the bar. While I’m waiting, I strike up a convo with one of Daniel’s ladies. He’s close, but he’s tied up talking to someone else. She seemed super nice, then Daniel swoops in, grabs the girl by the arm, and dips. Uh oh, I think she’s in trouble with daddy I say to the guy next to me, lol. I ran into the Cool Kids, their dj MVPJ, and rich their manager. Funny cause I hit up PJ wayyyy earlier to say i was comin to the Chi and he said they would be in Japan. And I had talked to Rich on the phone, so it was funny running into all of them at this party. Cashed some more drinks and started contemplating what the hell Katie was doing. She hadn’t hit me up and I was drunk and getting perturbed. I was so set on kickin it with her. Party’s over.

I go outside to try and link up with Katie, and I run into my 2nd favorite Austin duo, Elizabeth and Molly. We’re watching this drunk dude lookin crazy. Check this out….

Now it’s time for handshakes…. then Rick Astley shows up, lol

Then they try to pull his pants down…. bad move

I’m tryin to talk to Katie’s girls and see what’s goin on, but i’m having a hard time understanding what’s being said and i finally just ask where they are staying, I’ll come in a taxi. There was talk of going to some spot open until 6am. After like 15 minutes of trying to call her back and figure shit out, I dip out and go back to old town to meet up with my peeps, grab a slice (and by slice I mean Chicago’s deep dish, not shitty cardboard Panini’s pizza), and head back home. Here’s the spot.

And here’s some nice ladies I met, lol

Cashed out…. time for bed. Big day tomorrow. It’s the last day of lollapalooza….. out!

It is going to be a few days before I have everything up (I think it actually took me months after summer’s festival), but let’s start things off right with a few shots of Jane’s Addiction on the final night of this month’s Lollapalooza in Chicago, Illinois. The fifth Jane’s show of the summer for me and by far the best.

Setlist:

Up The Beach
Mountain Song
Ain’t No Right
Three Days
Whores
Been Caught Stealing
Then She Did…

Photo by Vincent la Foret/Stills Press/Retna

Whenever my loinspawn ask about Woodstock, I always think of Trevor. He was my best friend in those days, and he seemed to have the skinny on everything. It was he who first told me about an exotic “music and arts festival” scheduled on the far-off East Coast in August. It sounded a world and a lifetime away as I busied myself stapling homemade zine fliers into a post outside Boccherini’s Coffee and Tea House in our hometown of Albany, Oregon.

“All the bands are gonna be there,” he goshed between hits from his latte bong. Personally, I couldn’t see how anything could possibly top Body Count at Lollapalooza, but there was something in his voice that gave me pause. Besides, he assured me, “Adam Curry says it’s a phenomenon most unprecedented in the annals of music history.”

Intrigued all afternoon, I turned on my TV when I got home. There it was: Woodstock. How about that? My generation had finally wedded art and commerce with rock ‘n’ roll. You’d think someone would have discovered the connection earlier, but the ’80s had been too airless and crass, the ’70s were an oblivious case of the doped-up alley shakes, and the ’60s were utterly hopeless, as a reinvigorated Republican party dominated the decade under the aegis of Jerry Rubin.

A third day was added later.

The event was backed by Woodstock Ventures, Inc., a weapons manufacturer that came to prominence in the Reagan era. Captained by 74-year-old CEO Michael Lang, the bloated arms dealer was keen to tap the youth market in 1994. “Generation X? I think they’re amazing,” Lang told Fortune. “They’ve accomplished in smaller numbers what their parents’ generation was too lazy and stupid to even attempt. As for our involvement, we didn’t do much, honestly. A couple promoters in their early twenties came to us, jester hats in hand, and we just threw cash at ‘em while brooding in our self-imposed prisons of dark-souled avarice.”

It’s hard to explain to my kids just how different America was 15 years ago. It was a time of great change, an era of personal prosperity and hope. We had an awesome President and a thriving economy, and the only people who weren’t happy were assholes. “But weren’t you bored without cell phones and the Internet?” asks my son, Popquiz Hotshot Frye, 11. “No,” I chuckle. “Back then, girls wore baby-doll dresses.” “That’s how you met mom, right?” adds my daughter, Shannonhoon Beegirl Frye, 13. “That’s right, sweetie,” I reply sweetly. “Nobody drunkenly dropped her purse in a baby-doll quite like your mom.”

But all that was in an unforeseen future. All I could think about then were three fun-filled days in Saugerties, New York. It sounded like a memorable blast. But in the end I couldn’t go because I had to catch up on all the Conans I’d taped. Priorities. Trevor seemed relieved, as he’d begun pulling double shifts at the food-processing plant to pay for the tickets. As it turned out, only his girlfriend Pinta was available for the cross-country trek. Now, there was a storybook romance. They were so into each other that one night they hit the tattoo parlor downtown, where he got Buddy Holly etched into his upper right arm and she got Mary Tyler Moore inked into her left. In close quarters their tattoos kissed and made beautiful Rivers Cuomo music together. Now Trevor was telling me he planned to propose to Pinta right after The Cranberries’ set, when the moment would be just so. “I hope we get to make love in mud,” he sighed.

Radio bands bent under the weight of the impending event. There were the usual interviews with disconsolate ’60s icons. “I can’t believe we didn’t think of it,” ached John Sebastian. “It’s such a no-brainer. Jesus Christ, we dropped the ball.” “That’s what I meant when I said, ‘We blew it,’” explained Peter Fonda, referring to his memorably dismissive epitaph in 1969’s Easy Rider, then celebrating its 25th anniversary. “We were just a bunch of blind, capitalist pricks, and all we cared about was keeping Nixon in the White House.” Crosby, Stills & Nash recorded a jingle for McDonald’s, which played with increasing frequency as the festival drew near. “By the time we got to Woodstock,” their sweet harmonies enthused, “we were half a billion served.”

The promotional machine was in permanent overdrive. Since I couldn’t attend, I had my choice of myriad pay-per-view packages, all of which I purchased, along with four new televisions so I didn’t miss a single Flea bass plunk. I also bought the T-shirts, a couple hats, and the official Woodstock game for my Super Nintendo (the object was to help Henry Rollins beat the shit out of everyone in Candlebox). Trent Reznor went door-to-door to talk about Nine Inch Nails’ performance scheduled for Saturday, August 13, and Perry Farrell recruited his Porno for Pyros bandmates through a cross-promotional tie-in with MTV’s The Real World. So by the time the concerts finally aired, I was totally Woodstocked out, spending most of my days sweet-talking girls at the 7-Eleven down the street. I managed to catch a few performances when I wasn’t schooling company on F-Zero or napping, which was pretty much my entire schedule at the age of 21.

They say if you remember Woodstock, you weren’t actually there. I think that’s true. At least it was for me — and Trevor, funnily enough. The week before the festival he fortified his air-conditioned minivan with girlfriend, Bugles, Mountain Dew, and Pearl Jam bootlegs and got as far as Portland, Oregon, before he realized he was going the wrong way. So he just said, “Fuck it” and stayed. He and Pinta have been there ever since. They have two children of their own now and operate a microbrewery specializing in hemp-based elixirs. They still listen to The Cranberries while making out on the couch.

As for me, I’m fully domesticated. Two kids, loving wife, home mortgaged up the ass, and a St. Bernard named DJ Muggs. We’ve all gone our separate ways, Generation X, but I still have fond memories of that ancient summer, when the music raged and we all shrugged our shoulders as one.
