Leamington:

Take a look at our informative Careers and CVs display or book a place on ‘The Library Experience’ - a work experience opportunity we are offering consisting of 4 tasks:

• Plan and film a 3 minute video letting new students know what the Library can offer them and how it can help them achieve;
• plan and describe how you would spend £100 to enhance the fiction, cookery and DVDs sections;
• look at the Library Behaviour Code and draft a revised version of this contract;
• post a blog about your library experience on our Library Homepage.

Henley:

An exciting week of activities for students at Henley, including: a careers event in the Atrium from 10am to 12pm on Tuesday; FdA progression talks; work shadowing; Dress to Impress on Wednesday in the Lecture Theatre from 12pm to 12.30pm; Sport and Public Services Careers Fair in the Sports Hall on Thursday from 10.30am to 12.30pm; CV tips and workshops/competitions being held in the Library all week.

Update: Tuesday’s event was very well attended by both students and exhibitors, and also visitors from Alcester Academy, Alcester Grammar School and Henley High School. CVs and job applications were left with exhibitors and school students attended workshops to give them a taste of College life.

Moreton Morrell:

In the Library there is a top ten interview tips display, with a vintage theme inspired by Rupert Snoddlethwaite himself! Stop by the Library counter to watch Rupert’s short infomercial with advice on how to behave in an interview situation and you could be in with a chance of winning a £20 Amazon voucher!

Also running in the Library all week is the Top Tips competition. Do you have a top money saving tip that you would like to share? Enter your best tip to be in with a chance of winning a £20 Amazon voucher.

Pershore:

Two displays have been assembled at Pershore Library to promote this week. The first highlights the availability of e-books on CVs and Interview technique and the second shows how the LANTRA  website can be used to aid job searches.

Other events organised by Student Services included: ‘Wired for Success’ –  seminars about the psychology of success, and opportunities to review career planning with a ‘Careers MOT’.

The libraries have lots of resources (books, e-books and more) on careers, covering everything from writing a CV to how to answer interview questions, so why not pop in to your nearest site library and take a look!

Douglas was chosen as the Institute of Horticulture’s Young Horticulturist of the Year in 2012, he is in the March 2013 edition of Garden’s Illustrated, answering questions such as ~ Who has inspred your career the most?, Dream plant destination? and Most embarrassing moment regarding a plant? …among others.

Find this month’s edition in the Library at Pershore.

Landscapes evolve and develop over periods of time. Bell investigates the processes such as climate, geology, ecology and culture that shape the structure of the landscape. Over time patterns emerge ranging in scale from the distribution of small plants to the sculpture of a huge canyon. By understanding these patterns and processes we can develop our awareness of the landscape and our place in it as inhabitants and shapers thereby affecting the design process.

Click HERE to access Skills4study campus, an interactive e-learning resource designed to help students develop the study skills they need to succeed. It has been developed in conjunction with Stella Cottrell, author of the number one bestselling textbook ‘The Study Skills Handbook’. This resource can be used by students on any course, at any level of study.

Modules include: Getting ready for academic study, Reading and note making, Critical thinking skills, Writing skills, Referencing and plagiarism, Groupwork and presentations, Exam skills, Projects, dissertations and reports, Employability and personal development, and Confidence with numbers.

Tuesday 5th February is Safer Internet Day, which is organised by Insafe every year to promote safer and more responsible use of online technology and mobile phones - this year marks the 10th anniversary of the event. The theme for 2013 is Online Rights and Responsibilities, with the slogan “Connect with Respect”. If social networking is a big part of your life, it is important that you are aware of the various challenges you could face relating to your privacy, reputation and safety online. Visit the Safer Internet Day site for more information and make sure you are aware of the dangers of the digital world.

Currently, the UK government is considering making some changes to the existing Copyright, Designs and Patents Act (CDPA 1988). This video explores those proposals and the arguments on both sides of the debate.

We are all users of copyright material in our everyday lives, so it’s important to know basics.

The video is created by Bartolomeo Meletti, with support from the Department of Law at Bournemouth University.

Entrepreneurial minded students received their prizes and certificates this week for the great ideas they entered in our ‘Business idea from an everyday object’ competition. A big “Congrats!” to all the winners and runners-up (including Gareth Hopkins who we didn’t manage to get a      photo of).

Thank you for all the great, innovative entries for our ‘Business idea from an everyday object’ competition. Students were asked to give a description of the service or product they would create from either a matchbox, egg box, pumpkin, pack of polos or pine cone. Great ideas included homemade pumpkin soup, customising pine cones to make decorations and wreaths, and ideas on making jewellery and jewellery boxes. Very well done to runners-up David, Jodie, Sam and Juliette (all Pershore centre) who, along with the winners, will receive official certificates for their efforts. £20 Amazon vouchers go to winners Gareth Hopkins (Rugby centre) - who came up with the idea of turning egg boxes into compartmentalised snack boxes to use at the cinema - and Stacey Collins (Leamington centre), who used artistic flair to design a model of a crocodile from egg boxes. A big congratulations to Gareth and Stacey!

12th - 18th November is Global Entrepreneurship Week and there are many activities going on across College to get involved in! If you are looking for some enterprising inspiration you should stop in at any of the Libraries and take a look at our Entrepreneurship Week displays – there are many books on offer to help stimulate your creativity and give advice on how to make your business dreams a reality.

You can also read the inspiring stories of local entrepreneurs, and pick up an entry form for the competition challenging students to come up with a product or service based around one of five everyday objects, with the chance to win a £20 Amazon voucher!

The Pershore Fresher’s Fair library competition  ‘How many books are in the library?’ has been won by L2 Arb student Anthony Ward.  Anthony’s guess was the  nearest to the number of books currently in the library and he wins a £25 itunes voucher!

A big “welcome” to all new students and ”welcome back” to the rest of you! Whether you are just starting out at Warwickshire College or returning for a new year, we hope you had a nice summer and the transition back into ‘study mode’ isn’t too hard on the brain!

The library’s homepage is a place where library staff post a wide range of information relating to both study and areas of interest. See more pics HERE or take a look at the collection of floristry books we have at Warwickshire College by using the search term floristry on the LIBRARY CATALOGUE.    You could just browse through the 745 shelves at Pershore or Moreton if you prefer, or take a look at the range of floristry journals that we keep in these two centres; ask a member of staff if you need help to locate them.

It takes a look at the technology that could eliminate those infuriating referee decisions as well as innovations that will enhance the experience for players and spectators alike such as ball tracking, anti-dive shin pads and laser guided players.

Focus is a monthly magazine that covers science, technology and the future. It is available at Trident, Leamington and Rugby library and back copies can be borrowed for one week.

All articles are written in bite size pieces so it’s quick and easy to pick up some interesting facts. If you’d like to know how long it would take to drive to the International Space Station or the chances of an asteroid hitting earth, pick up June’s issue in the library today.
