Its a fact of life here in Sunny Queensland, it is impossible not to sweat.

Deodorant becomes a necessary evil, its either deodorant or your very own personal space bubble.

Deodorant seems to be the more social of the two choices.

But I am sick of rubbing toxic deodorant full of aluminium, formaldehyde & parabens into my pits each morning – it may ward off odours and keep my friends close but, what is it doing to my health??

Aluminum can cause kidney problems, formaldehyde is a known carcinogen and parabens can cause problems for our endocrine system.

So instead of rubbing this toxic cocktail into my lymph nodes, I decided to make a safe deodorant that contains no nasties, is easy to use & WORKS!

One application in the morning keeps me fresh all day. The hard bars are easy to apply & easy to store. No white marks or stains on clothes. But the biggest thing is NO SMELL!

Natural Deodorant Bars a’la Mama Going Natural

You will need:

6 T Coconut oil

4 T bicarb soda

4 T Arrowroot

1 1/2 T beeswax

15 drops Lavender essential oil

15 drops Rosemary essential oil

20 drops Lemon essential oil

15 drops Grapefruit essential oil

Place your coconut oil & beeswax in a glass jar and put the jar into a saucepan of simmering water. Stir occasionally until all of your beeswax melts.

Take your jar out of the saucepan of water & let cool slightly. When the mixture has cooled to approximately 40 degrees (when it feels warm but not too hot on your fingers) add all of the other ingredients & stir well to combine.

Pour your mix into muffin, soap or chocolate moulds & leave to harden.

This recipe makes six bars, so there will be enough to share. It has a gorgeous citrus botanical scent with just a hint of coconut. If you want to make a more unisex variation add some tea tree oil in place of the Lavender & you will get a citrus wood scent that your man will be happy to wear.

Keep unused bars in a tin or wrapped in wax paper in a cool dark place till needed.

To use simply rub your yummy scented deodorant bar under your arms & leave to dry for a few minutes before putting on your clothing – that way you can ensure you won’t get any white marks on your clothing.

If your in a very hot climate keep your bars in a soap tin & scoop out a small amount with your fingers & rub it where needed!

Photo via flickr by David Locke.

No one wants to flush money down the drain. But think about how many household soaps you use that you may be overusing. Do you know exactly what the dishwater needs? The washing machine? Shampoo? Face wash? Hand soap? If you’re anything like me, when the bottle is new, I end up dumping out way too much. And then when the bottle is almost done, I’m scrimping the last bits to get out a drop to finish the job.

The best thing to do is make a conscientious effort to find out how much is an appropriate amount of soap for the job. Read the dishwasher and washing machine instructions. Or at least the back of the bottle or box of soap. Technology has advanced rapidly. High efficiency soaps and machines need a lot less product than you may have used in the past. It’s even the case that the recommended amount of soap can be halved in most machines. Contrary to what most of us think, lots of suds means way too much soap in washing machines and dish washers. If you don’t think you are using too much soap, run these tests to see what your results are. Most likely you’re using too much soap.

Front loading washing machines need very little soap. Photo via flickr by Editor B.

Not only is too much soap in washing machines and dishwashers wasting money on your soap product, but over-soaping wears out the machinery faster by gunking it up, creates mold and mildew (you wouldn’t think as it is soap!), wears out your clothes faster and leaves your dishes filmy.

As for shampoo and other liquid soaps, unless they come in a pump bottle, it’s too easy to dump out twice as much or more than you need out of the original bottle. I recommend getting a pump bottle for your shampoo and conditioner to be able to control the amount of shampoo and conditioner you dole out. Squeezing it out of a standard flip top bottle leads to a lot of waste. How much shampoo you need really depends on your length of hair. For chin to shoulder length hair, which is the standard for most bottle instructions, it would be a portion of shampoo the size of a quarter (2.5 cm). But for shorter hair than this, it would be less, closer to nickel size (1.5 cm) and longer hair would be a little more.

Bar soap is cheaper and less prone to overuse than liquid soap. Photo via flickr by Horia Varlan.

For body wash and hand soap, I would recommend getting rid of liquid versions altogether and using bar soap. Bar soap is cheaper, and you are much less likely to overuse the soap. Contrary to some thinking, using a bar of soap for a household doesn’t transfer any bacteria or germs. Especially if the bar is given a clean off rinse after use. The only drawback to bar soap is the filmy wet scum, which can be combated with a good soap dish. If someone in your household is really attached to liquid body wash or other liquid soaps, a pump bottle if it doesn’t already come in a pump bottle is a good idea. Don’t be afraid to use only half a pump if that’s all you need.

Once you start watching your soap use, you can make your soap products last twice as long or more by using the appropriate amount of soap for the job at hand.

. A new report by the Washington Toxics Coalition and Safer States reveals the results of manufacturer reporting to the Washington State Department of Ecology.

Makers of kids’ products reported using 41 of the 66 chemicals identified by WA Ecology as a concern for children’s health. Major manufacturers who reported using the chemicals in their products include Walmart, Gap, Gymboree, Hallmark, H & M and others. They use these chemicals in an array of kids’ products, including clothing, footwear, toys, games, jewelry, accessories, baby products, furniture, bedding, arts and crafts supplies and personal care products. Besides exposing kids in the products themselves, some of these chemicals, for example toxic flame retardants, build up in the environment and in the food we eat.

Examples of product categories reported to contain toxic chemicals include:

As our parents and loved ones age, it’s normal for us to look out for them more and more and do whatever we can to make their lives easier. They may have developed a chronic illness or perhaps a mobility problem. While we take on more responsibility for their wellbeing, we still have our own lives, jobs, children, and problems to deal with. In time, we lose ourselves to this responsibility and worse yet stop being children or loved ones and become caregivers instead. It’s important to keep that family bond and recognize when our loved one needs outside help to stay independent.

There are signs to look for that can indicate some professional help is needed. These signs creep up slowly, almost without us noticing it. Are our loved ones able to and do they take care of their personal needs like bathing and performing oral hygiene? Are they odor free, wearing clean clothes, and dressing appropriately for the weather? Is the home being kept up, garbage taken out, and are the bills being paid on time?

Do they remember to keep appointments and are they able to follow instructions from the doctor or dentist? How’s the driving — do they get lost or have frequent near misses when they drive? Are there any mood swings or do they have difficulty understanding others?
Once upon a time, I was a biology major. I wanted to be a doctor. I believed that new scientific inv

Once upon a time, I was a biology major. I wanted to be a doctor. I believed that new scientific inventions and discoveries were always not only the best, but the only solution. Until I realized that “Western medicine” simply treats an already existing problem and some scientific advances have begun to make us all weak in the knees, in a bad way. Science has brought us GMO’s, it has brought us pills to counter the pills to alleviate the symptoms of diseases that could have been prevented. I was, and still am skeptical of holistic solutions, and one of the tests that is always failed is by natural deodorants. Natural deodorants have a special way of leaving you smelling like a barn after only a few short hours, and on top of that you usually feel drenched. I have found the holy grail of natural deodorants.

But why is everyone making such a big deal about regular, conventional antiperspirants? The active ingredient in antiperspirant deodorants is aluminum zirconium tetrachlorohydrex gly. Most people will probably struggle to pronounce this, but that is not why we should not use it. How aluminum zirconium works is by being absorbed into the skin where aluminum ions cause the skin to swell enough to pinch the sweat glands shut so as to prevent any sweat from escaping. Many people believe this can cause infections. You know, those little red bumps you get in your armpits? I haven’t gotten a single one since I switched to Soapwalla’s deodorant cream (yes, I still shave my underarms). Many also subscribe to the belief that antiperspirants block your ability to release toxins, which to me is a bit far out there for my science background, but worth mentioning. The most pressing issue regarding conventional antiperspirants is their very possible correlation to Alzheimer’s and breast cancer, though there isn’t affirmative proof of this (…yet).

If I’m such a skeptic though, why would I switch to a natural deodorant? I switched to natural because I feel it’s better to be safe than sorry. I like to avoid the used of parabens and ingredients that I don’t know the origin of. Ingredients that I cannot pronounce. These chemicals are absorbed into our skin, and if there is no proof that they’re either safe or dangerous, why not take the route we know is safe? So I went on the ultimate mission: to find a natural deodorant that leaves me feeling and smelling as fresh as a daisy. I stood in the natural food store time after time, smelling the deodorants in their tubes. Most of them smell lovely, but after a mere 4 hours of wearing them: barnyard. Then one day, by the recommendation of a fellow volunteer; I was directed to Soapwalla’s deodorant cream. Soapwalla was started in a little Brooklyn apartment by a woman who needed to make her own skincare products due to her very sensitive skin caused by systemic lupus. She decided to leave her law career to pursue her love for creation, and she opened Soapwalla to the public. All of her products are 100% vegan, never tested on animals, and are loaded with essential oils and all natural ingredients. Plus, there’s the added bonus that for we New Yorkers Soapwalla is local!

On to the deodorant cream: I practice vinyasa yoga. It is a form of flow yoga, not as athletic or fast paced as ashtanga, but it certainly works up a sweat and tests your strength in ways I’d rather not describe. For you ayurvedic followers, I’m also a pitta; i.e. I’m always hot. I wouldn’t say that I’m a profuse sweater, but I definitely wouldn’t want to go to a yoga class or for a run without deodorant on. And so one day I went and picked up Soapwalla’s deodorant cream and put it to the test. I opened it up to find a rich, creamy, pale yellow substance. It smells as it should, given it’s list of ingredients:

Simmondsia chinensis (Jojoba) Oil*; Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Oil*; Rosehip Seed Oil*; Butyrospermun parkii (Shea) Butter; Corn Starch*+; Sodium Bicarbonate+; Kaolin Clay; Vegan Kosher Glycerin*+; a custom blend of essential oils, including: Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender)*; Melaleuca Alternifolia (Tea Tree)*; Citrus Sinensis (Sweet Orange); Mentha Piperita (Peppermint)*; Citrus Aurantium Bergamia (Bergaptene-free Bergamot)*; Non-GMO Vitamin E*+. (*: certified organic, +: food-grade)

Essential oils can be an acquired taste for some, they often smell somewhat medicinal. Once you’ve adjusted from artificial fragrances to naturals, though; essential oils are unbeatable. This deodorant cream doesn’t smell like your regular antiperspirant. It smells very much of tea tree, peppermint, and lavender; but after the tea tree begins to fade you can smell the sweet orange begin to shine through. I think it smells wonderful. Essential oils are completely absorbed through the skin, so you won’t smell anything at all after a few hours. Even with my old antiperspirant I started to smell a little ripe after a 16 hour day, but with this? My pits smell like nothing at all. I also have the added bonus of irritation-free, soft, smooth underarms! Something I NEVER had with an antiperspirant, even if they were marketed to promise smooth underarms after however many days of using it.

So why does this stuff work? Essential oils are naturally antimicrobial! But it doesn’t stop there, as a buffer sodium bicarbonate has been added to ensure freshness by absorbing any odors and both corn starch and kaolin clay have been added to aid in sweat absorption. It’s also chock full of moisturizing ingredients that are gentle on even the most sensitive skin, gentle enough that I personally haven’t experienced any stinging or irritation even immediately after shaving.

So there you have it, our natural deodorant wishes have been answered by Soapwalla.

The end of Spring Semester is just two weeks away. Maybe you got an internship across the country, or maybe you’re just moving out of the residence halls. One thing’s for sure: once that last final is over, you’ll probably have to start packing. Ana Emerson, a former Sustain Mizzou member, got really good at packing in her first year after graduation. In “Simplicity is Key,” from her blog, We Trip, We Travel, she reminds us that we don’t need all that stuff. Here’s an excerpt from her post, “Confessions of a Seasoned Packer.”

Our latest move went well. It was not perfect. It still took longer than I thought it would. But in the end, Harold and I were satisfied.

Here’s what we did.

We had a goal. This may seem obvious, but if you don’t have a clear vision of what you want to accomplish by the end of your move, chances are you aren’t going to get there. We set our sights high for this one:

Our goal was to arrive in Indy with nothing but ourselves and our car. We wanted the things we left behind to be organized in such a way that we can get away without thinking of them until after we get to France. But if we do think of them, they are easy to locate. And we wanted to leave behind a sparkling-clean apartment for our landlords (my in-laws), and no loose ends for them to tie up for us.

We had structure. After taking into consideration, a) the kinds of things we were wanting to store and, b) the many locations in which these things may be wanted in the future, I decided upon a loose system that became more defined as I worked. Anything we want to take to France stayed with us. Anything we want shipped to Africa went in one pile. Anything else we didn’t get rid of went in another.

With this in mind, it was fairly easy to keep track of things as I packed them. I numbered each box as I packed, making a list of what was inside. Everything we boxed up is either staying in storage in my in-laws’ basement or being shipped to Africa in a year or two, so I was sure to make those two categories easy to tell apart. When I was done, I typed it out and now have a digital copy in addition to our notebook.

We had the tools we needed. We had the usual: boxes, tape, packing material (we use towels and plastic bags to pack our fragiles). I LOVE packing in apple boxes from the grocery store. They’re super sturdy and pretty roomy so they fit more of those odd-ball items. But sometimes they can be hard to come by. We had some leftovers from previous moves, but mostly used paper boxes because we had a great source and uniformity is a wonderful thing.

But for boxing our stuff up long-term, we stocked up on a few other things:

garbage bags—when you leave the country and leave your stuff behind for years, who knows what will happen to it. If my in-laws decide our boxes can’t live in their basement, they could end up in a drafty barn or worse. So we put a garbage bag inside each box before we packed it to keep moisture out.

moth balls—I’m not sure if this is necessary, but I sure don’t want to have maternity clothes shipped across an ocean someday only to find that they’re full of moth holes. Sure, they’ll smell like my grandma’s house for a day or so, but give them enough air and the stink will leave.

labels—really big, easy-to-read, custom-made labels so that when we call the in-laws asking them to find that pair of boots we decided we need, they won’t be terribly inconvenienced. “Box 7A? Got it.”

I bought a pack of 81/2 x 11″ label paper, printed, cut them in half, and stuck two of them on each box. Here’s what they looked like:

We had LOTS of time. We started this two months before the day. Which gave us time to make decisions slowly. Every time I walked past our piles, I had a chance to get rid of one more thing. And every time I needed more time to decide where to put a certain shirt or notebook, I had it. Most of our boxes were packed by a few days prior to moving—it was the stuff we kept with us that surprised us at the end. There was way more of it than we thought!

We had LOTS of space. We had an empty space in our garage that was perfect for spreading everything out. It was great—our stuff didn’t swallow our living space, and I could go down and pack for half and hour at a time during Lucas’s naps. Everything was just how I had left it. There was no cleaning up or digging things out to get started.

We had both hands free. The last day before a move is crunch time. It’s the day that you realize that you’re moving. And the day that you spend in a constant state of panic. We decided on a whim to send Lucas away with his grandparents. They were headed to Omaha for Christmas a day ahead of us, and we figured he’d have more fun with them than he would staying behind.

Read “Simplicity is Key” on We Trip, We Travel

As a result, we could put anything on the floor that we wanted, which is very important in the final stages of moving in which furniture is emptied and the odds and ends of the house end up strewn around haphazardly. We were pushing our time limit without him around. I hate to think what would have happened had he stayed behind.

We were flexible. We ended up leaving behind a few things that wouldn’t fit into our car. And we didn’t let it stress us out. Our reusable diapers didn’t make the cut, so we’re using disposables. My special teacup from a childhood birthday party broke. I’ve moved on. Our external monitor didn’t fit, so we’re doing without. And it’s fine. We try our best not to let what we have define our attitudes or self-image. If people all over the world have never even considered using an external monitor, then I guess we can get along without it.
