Letting go does not mean giving up, but rather accepting that there are things that cannot be.

Why do you cling in pain? When there is nothing that you could possibly do about the wrongs of yesterday. It is not up to you to judge. Why hold on to the very things which are keeping you away from being truly happy and successful in life?

Very often, people get trapped by their thoughts. Our thoughts arise from our beliefs – it colors our decisions. If we believe life to be bad, we expect bad things to happen. But, aren’t we fully in control of our thoughts? Thus, to change your world, you will have to change yourself. The world will follow you – but you will have to let go of your thoughts and beliefs in order to get there. !!!

Certainly, change is never easy. We often fight to hold on, and we fight to letting go. Your key to change is to let go ……… Your immediate action is to be at any moment willing to sacrifice what you are for what you could become.

Life is about making the right decisions and moving on. You are responsible for your life. You cannot keep blaming someone else for any dysfunction. You don’t need strength to let go of something, what you really need is understanding – the need to move on.

To “let go” is not to lose power, but to de-open the power within.
To “let go’” is not to enable, but to allow learning from natural consequences.
“To “let go” is not to deny, but to accept.
To “let go” is not to regret the past, but to grow and live for the future.
To “let go” is not to criticize or regulate anyone, but to try to become what I dream I can be.
To “let go” is not to judge, but to allow another to be a human being.
To “let go” is to fear less and love more.

Some people think it is holding on that makes one strong – sometimes it is the ability to let go . Thoughts do not change. We change. I reckon, when you need to grab something, grab it; when you need to let go, let go…….. live free ……… and have it all. !!!

Well, I am still reeling from my experiences at the Paris Hotel in Las Vegas. The M2 wealth conference and the one day Master Marketing Event were truly beyond words. But I will try to relate what the most important benefits were in relation to growing both my home based internet marketing business and also how I am able to improve myself as a person.
First a little bit about the setting. The Paris Hotel is an astonishing luxury hotel in the heart of the Vegas Strip. It buzzes with people 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. It is built in a traditional French style and has a massive Eiffel Tower and a copy of the Arc de Triomphe out the front. This place is huge. Inside everything is ornate and very stylish with multiple bars, restaurants, clubs, shops and of course the Casino which rocks 24 hours a day. Sensory overload before the conference even begins.
The M2 wealth conference covered the full range of WMI focus. Health, wealth and wisdom and the goal to make a difference in the world one person at a time. Although I can’t give details of the information covered I can tell you that every presenter was an eye-opener and the number of a-ha moments compounded over the 3 days. You find out how the super wealthy really make money. You get to understand the reality of the current economic crisis and who out there is really profiting from it. You get introduced to opportunities which will seriously improve your future. You will want to race home and sack your financial advisor. You will also have major insights into your health; through nutrition, an understanding of the Pharmaceutical industry and you will be inspired by the personal development and motivational speakers.
Capping off the conference was a very stylish black tie dinner and awards evening. Top consultants took away with them prizes including gold and cash and 2 houses were given away! I was privileged to take home a cash award for my sales and it was great to be on stage with some of my heroes.
Do whatever it takes to get to the next conference. This is life-changing.
As if that wasn’t enough the next day was the Master Marketing Event. Over 1400 people attended and the event had all the excitement of a rock n roll show. Presenting the most cutting edge internet marketing techniques were some of the giants of the industry. It was enough to make your head explode. And to top it all off was the launch of a very special new marketing strategy known as CarboncopyPRO 3.0 which will seriously change the industry.
The wind up evening was spent at a fabulous Japanese restaurant with a hundred or so invited guests and the chance to meet and talk with the top producers, marketing gurus, and founders.
Probably the biggest thing I have taken away with me is the number of really good friends I have made. People who are passionate about what they do and who understand the struggles and the successes of a top team of marketers. The contacts you make and the special friends are even more valuable on many levels than the power of the information. Meeting and spending time with my mentor Lena Bjorna was fantastic and getting to talk with the likes of Jimmy Davis, Aaron Parkinson, Jay Kubassek, John Jackson, Tanya Outridge, Elaine Love, Andrew Cass, Michael Force and many, many more was a real honour.
I would like to thank and congratulate both Wealth Masters and CarboncopyPRO for an incredible week. The information and the networks will be an invaluable resource for my future in this industry.

We live in a different economic climate these days. Some states in the USA are reporting double digi

We live in a different economic climate these days. Some states in the USA are reporting double digit unemployment numbers. Even if you do have a job, many of us this year have seen health insurance costs passed on to us, raises suspended or frozen, and others having to take some unpaid furlough time or risk being laid off. It’s very easy to be swayed into thinking there’s no hope for your future and that we will be stuck in these recession times for years.

I went through the same feeling during my college years of the early 1990’s. I worried about finding the right career after obtaining my degree. I realized quickly that if you really are sincere about who you are as a person and get to know others through your lifetime (plus make a regular habit of keeping in contact with them), your chances of survival are much higher.

Luckily for me, I continued through my college career developing my own deejay business with my best friend and partner. We pooled all of our extra income back into the business, updating our look, our equipment and continually striving to offer the biggest production at the best prices. When I finished college I started on a path of teaching- obtaining an emergency private school job in my town thanks to the headmaster of the school following my career. I made an impression not just working in his cafeteria for four years, but also through my work in the community and my academic accolades.

When I moved into my current work at a hospital, my father-in-law gave me the heads up about an opening on the overnights. I spent years debating whether I wanted to work at this particular place of employment- but knew that now would be the right time to do this because of our child care needs. When it comes to adoption, I didn’t want my daughters to spend a long time getting to know us or form attachments. Being that they were older children, we knew the road would be harder and bumpier- so I felt it would be easy for one of us to be at home with the kids when they got home from school. I’ve never regretted the decision- I love my work, I love my wife, I love my daughters and I think they are growing up to be wonderful young ladies as a result of the security and consistent parenting models they receive.

You can always do something to move you in the direction of your goals. If you don’t have the dream job you desire, find someone who’s working in that field and ask them for advice about the skills and people they need to know to get into that field. I’m going to take some advice from Jack Canfield that he posed in the January 2010 issue of Success magazine. He believes this year everyone should take one new activity they’ve never done before and spend 30 consecutive days doing that activity. Some of his ideas include: 30 minutes per day of aerobic exercise, reading 30 minutes a day in the personal development/ self-help field, call one of your children on the phone, drink 10 glasses of water per day, and so forth. Imagine how much stronger you would be in mind, in body, in spirit, if you added 12 new life skills to your personal balance sheet?

Now is the time to take matters into your own hands. There are universal principles that apply in any time period to make things better for your life. Study people who made their success in tough time periods of life: especially the great depression of the 1930’s and 1940’s. It’s so easy to put the blame on the government, on your parents, on where you live, or any other external circumstance. Take the time to look within yourself and I bet if you spend more time working on yourself, the ideas and goals you need to accomplish to get further ahead will be staring at the mirror in front of you.

“Meski Anda Kesulitan Untuk Keluar Dari Jebakkan Permainan Kerja Kantor, Anda Bisa Memulai Hari Ini

“Meski Anda Kesulitan Untuk Keluar Dari Jebakkan Permainan Kerja Kantor, Anda Bisa Memulai Hari Ini Untuk Membuat Hari Esok Anda Agar Tidak Terjebak Dalam Rutinitas Permainan Kerja Kantor.” – Djajendra

If you have ever worked out at a gym or studio, you know the walls are lined with mirrors. When I first started going to a gym for aerobics classes in the ’90’s, I would position myself directly behind someone else (preferably someone heavier than I was!), so that I didn’t have to see myself in the mirror at all. I just saw her, when she raised her arm, I raised my arm, when she raised her leg, I raised my leg and so on.

Life is much like this, don’t you think? It is much easier to look at someone else than to take a good hard look at ourselves. If I am watching her it’s easy to see what she is doing wrong, how I compare with her and not look at improving myself. If I step in front on her and face myself in the mirror, I can notice if I am doing something that needs to be corrected, I can acknowledge if I doing something right and I can look for ways to improve.

Let’s consider getting out from behind someone else’s shadow- step out, step up and step into a more fulfilling you! All that we have to do is look in the mirror.

This month has been one of the most amazingly productive and creative months of the last year. I’ve finally been able to focus on the dynamics of my business and fine tune its execution.

…and I’ve been rocking the bejesus out of Photoshop.

So why have I been tripping the month fantastic? Because I have not one but two looming deadlines. First, we return to Raleigh in 16 days. Second, the credits that I purchased on iStockphoto expire today.

Today, people!

As it turns out, in order to get my productivity on, not any old deadline will do.

subjective deadline: a due date created for a personal benefit (ex. “I’d like to clear this room out by Friday.”)

concrete deadline: a completely fixed and external due date (ex. “Our answer to the plaintiff’s complaint needs to be filed with the court today.”)

organic deadline: a due date which, though not fixed, naturally arises from individual circumstances (ex. “I want to start our family before my husband turns 40.”)

Because a deadline that we create is simply a goal with a date attached.

While that may work for some people, it doesn’t for me. My brain knows that the “deadline” is really a goal in disguise…and is having none of it!

The truth is that I am simply not motivated by subjective deadlines. So how can I create organic or concrete deadlines to accomplish a goal?

By concurrently creating a responsibility or consequence for myself.

For example, if I desire the motivation to clean my house, inviting a friend over for dinner does not create enough responsibility or consequence.

Throwing a dinner party, on the other hand, is a public commitment that incites a visceral feeling of deep responsibility.

Bring on the booyah!

In my case, I am strongly motivated to use all of my iStockphoto credits before they expire. (concrete deadline)

I am also 100% motivated to get my business roll-out ready for when I get back to Raleigh. (organic deadline)

…which explains why my brain has been living Photoshop!

I know that I should check my email just once or twice each day. But I’m not built like that,

I know that I should check my email just once or twice each day. But I’m not built like that, and until someone invents a device that prevents me from checking obsessively (whether seized by fits of procrastination or not), it’s not going to change.

I did try and put myself off a bit by making my password fiendishly complicated (a random collection of upper and lower case letters and numbers with no apparent pattern or meaning). The problem is that if you type something twelve times in one morning, it soon trickles off the fingers with little effort.

Here a suggestion for picking a more user friendly password that may do more favours than discouraging an email obsession.

Make your password work for you.

We might type in passwords for our email, computer, facebook or twitter accounts several times each day. Rather than using a cunning combination of the dog’s birthday and the cat’s maiden name, pick a password that will provide a mini pep talk each time it’s keyed in.

If you’re training for a marathon, or the local 10k, why not log in with ‘SuperRunner’? If you’re improving your diet, what about ‘HappyHealthyEater’? If you’re working on your confidence, try ‘IsAGreatNetworker’. And if you’re reconnecting with the lighter side of life try ‘SmilesALot’. Get the idea? Write in the present tense and make it positive. ‘IsANon-Smoker’ is far more effective than ‘WillQuitTheCiggies’.

I’m obsessed with my email and log in several times a day. Typing my little personal affirmation (which I’m keeping to myself thank you very much!) gives me a conscious reminder of what I’m working towards (or a bit of a shove). It also subconsciously stimulates the brain by associating one’s name with something positive. For example: Username: ‘Joe_Bloggs’; Password: ‘HasTheBodyOfAGod’.

Think it, write it, believe it, do it!

Pain is temporary. Quitting lasts forever. Lance Armstrong

And wonder of wonders my wife worked out with me. This is a wonder because I’ve asked her numerous times to work out with me in our near 20 year relationship and it has been a rare thing. Also, she actually asked me if she could work out with me about a week or so ago, maybe even two weeks ago and we just got to it. I’m looking forward to continuing this journey together. We started out with the introductory Turbulence Training workout for sedentary people.

Intro Level Workout Week 1 Day 1 Workout A
All of the exercises are done in superset or circuit fashion.
Warmup A) Lying Hip Extension 2×5
Warmup B) Kneeling Pushup 2×5
Warmup C) Stability Ball Leg Curl 2×5

1A) Lying Hip Extension 2×5

3A) Kneeling Pushups 2×8
3B) Side Plank 2×5 secs / side

4A) Stick-ups 2×10
4B) Ab Curl-up 2×6

She did everything the same as me except the kneeling push-ups where she did 2×5. She did great! We followed this with Beginner Interval Workout A on our stationary bike w/ arm-pump handles.

In the past week or two, I’ve spent a lot of time cooking, for a lot of reasons. First of all,

In the past week or two, I’ve spent a lot of time cooking, for a lot of reasons.

First of all, I just like to cook. This sabbatical of mine has fostered a new love for the family dinner table and I spend an hour or two each night creating healthy, tasty meals for Brian and Erin, so that we can sit and enjoy each other’s company and share the ups and downs of our day.

Second, the former skirt! Raleigh team gathered at my house to say farewell to former editor Faith Dwight, who is returning to her husband’s native England. We’ll miss her. We gathered and ate … and ate …. and ate. It was a bittersweet evening, but we all enjoyed the food.

And, third, of course, Thanksgiving. I’m Canadian, so I get two Thanksgivings every year. The Canadian one, in October, is usually marked for us by throwing steaks on the grill and making my daughter’s favorite risotto, the smoked tomato and shitake mushroom one. And for American Thanksgiving, we sometimes have the turkey and trimmings. This year, we had the turkey and trimmings.

Which brings me to the onions.

I’ve discovered that I can do almost anything in the kitchen if I just have some onions. I can make pasta sauce from scratch. I can make risotto. I can make roast chicken pieces on an aromatic bed of onions, celery and carrots (maybe some fennel for fun, if I happen to have it). I can make a crustless quiche. I can make French onion soup. I can make soft tacos.

When I begin to cook, I instinctively reach for those onions. I need the onions to make everything happen.

Which brings me to the life lesson and it’s not the Shrek lesson … ogres are like onions, they have many layers … although, that, too, is a good lesson about the depth of people’s character.

The life lesson I took from all the slicing and chopping and dicing and weeping is this: If you want to make yourself valuable to the world, be the onion. Be the essential ingredient that makes everything come together. Be the first ingredient people reach for when they’re trying to create something magical and wonderful.

No shame in being the onion, people. Onions are essential.

by Chaundra McGill When I was kid, I sporadically wrote in my diary. I wrote about my current crush

by Chaundra McGill

When I was kid, I sporadically wrote in my diary. I wrote about my current crush or the latest drama at school. I think I wrote about two weeks worth of entries in my whole seventh grade year.

Fast forward 18 years, I carry my journal everywhere I go. My journal is a part of my mental checklist before I leave the house: car keys, cell phone, iPod, and journal. My journal is my lifeline.

But how can a blank book be this important to anyone? The fact that the book is blank has limitless possibilities. Rather than just a recording of daily minutia, my journal allows me to vent my frustration, express my emotions freely, reflect on my past, meditate on my present, and prepare for my future with new insight.

My journal helped me properly grieve my uncle’s murder, recognize destructive behavioral patterns, and just plain make sense of my life.

My renewed sense of possibility and perspective stopped making journaling seem like a chore. Journaling became a privilege because this was time exclusively for me. But you may be wondering how my perspective of journal writing shifted, and more importantly how can it shift for you.

The answer: Reflective Writing Therapy. Reflective Writing Therapy combines the descriptive qualities of reflective writing and the therapeutic qualities of writing therapy. By answering four painfully simple questions, Reflective Writing Therapy can aide self-discovery, emotional well-being, self-expression and inspiration.

What?
This is the descriptive and emotional level of Reflective Writing Therapy. Before you can begin Reflective Writing Therapy, you have to know upon what you are reflecting. At this stage, you simply capture the details of the event, the people involved, your feelings about the situation, and so forth.

Why?
This is the outlook and evaluation level of Reflective Writing Therapy. After you have described the situation, you can begin digging a little deeper by looking at the good, bad and the ugly. Determining the positive and negative consequences, what this situation tells you or teaches you, and so forth.

Why now?
This is the analysis and relevance level of Reflective Writing Therapy. There is a reason that you have decided to evaluate a certain event or incident now, so this stage is where you figure out why. This is also the stage where you began to consider other perspectives and other sources of knowledge that can influence how you view the situation.

What now?
This is the conclusion and planning level of Reflective Writing Therapy. The final step is the whole point of reflection: to obtain clarity and a plan of action. At this stage, you can determine how this situation or outlook of this situation will affect your future, what you need to do, and what steps are you going to take based on what you’ve learned.

The two days we should not worry about

by M Asim Afzal

Firstly, Happy Eid to Everyone.

At a time of celebration, it is useful to reflect on our life and our choices, especially those related to business. I came across this excerpt today that I wanted to share. Unfortunately, I am unaware of the author of this thought provoking piece.

“There are two days in every week about which we should not worry, two days which should be kept free from fear and apprehension. One of these days is Yesterday, with its mistakes and cares, its faults and blunders, its aches and pains. Yesterday has passed forever beyond our control. All the money in the world cannot bring back Yesterday. We cannot undo a single act we performed; we cannot erase a single word we said. Yesterday is gone.

The other day we should not worry about is Tomorrow, with its possible adversities, its burdens, its large promise, and poor performance. Tomorrow is also beyond our immediate control. Tomorrow’s sun will rise, either in splendour or behind a mask of clouds; but it will rise. Until it does, we have no stake in tomorrow, for it is as yet unborn.

This leaves only one day: Today. Anyone can fight the battles of just one day. It is only when you and I add the burdens of those two awful eternities -Yesterday and Tomorrow – that we break down. It is not the experience of Today that drives us mad, it is remorse and bitterness for something which happened Yesterday and the dread of what Tomorrow may bring. Let us therefore, live this one full Today.”

There is a quote I recall that states “Procrastination is the grave in which opportunity is buried” that sits well with the above and on a day of family, celebration and reflection, I have a simple question for you today:

What will you give of yourself to make today memorable?

So as we always say at Templeton Green – In business as in life, we have a choice, what will yours be today?

Carpe Diem

I think that for most of us, we wonder why we have found ourselves in the situations we’re in.

I think that for most of us, we wonder why we have found ourselves in the situations we’re in. We don’t necessarily like, or even understand the fact that, where we are at in our life right now is exactly because of our level of thinking and the actions stemmed from that thinking has placed us. What we have learned and applied (the choices and decisions we make) is what has got us to where we are as individuals.
So, with that being said are you truly satisfied with where you are at in your life? If you are, is it because you have sacrificed some of your dreams for reality, complacency and mediocrity? If you aren’t happy with your situation or, are striving for much better things, then wouldn’t it be wiser to start getting fed information from the people who have the knowledge and things that we desire? Why do we take advice from people who have the same, or even worse results than ourselves when it comes to relationships, finances, business or lifestyle? We are fed all of this 95% thinkers nonsense everyday because we choose to listen to it and let it permeate into our heads, then we start to act on and apply that dangerous thinking into our own lives and wonder “WHAT HAPPENED?” I love my friends and family, but most of them have do not have the results that I want in my life. I’m not saying that they’re losers,or that they’re idiots, it’s just that I’m looking for much different results than they are, or at least I’m certainly going about getting those results in a much different way. Who are you getting fed your information from? Is it the 95% of Americans who are stuck and hurting due to improper thinking stemmed from an improper source of knowledge? Or, are you cautious about what goes into your melon, and weed out the harmful abundance of just o.k. and bad knowledge , and listen to 5% of Americans who found a way to break free from the restrictions of the 95% have-nots and achieve their dreams?

Here are some examples of what some of the closest people to me have given me for information about my future and success. Again, I don’t mean to take away from these people in my life and certainly I don’t want you to think that I am saying not to ever listen or talk to your friends or family again, that’s not the point. Just be careful of what you’re allowing to permeate into your brain. Remember, they don’t know what they don’t know. So here we go.

1. “Go to School get a good education and get a good secure job.”
80% of college grads don’t even get into the field their degree was for in the first place. They rack up $100,000’s in debt. The average person in this generation will switch careers(not just jobs) 5-7 times in their lifetime. And last but not least, there is no such thing as a good “SECURE” job with good benefits and a retirement plan. Companies are pulling the rug out from under employees that have been dedicated to them for decades! Please don’t think that I’m knocking education because I’m not. I believe very strongly in it. It just depends on what kind of education we’re talking about.

2. “Don’t get your hopes up.”
Really? That could be one of the most effective lines in our langauge at taking away peoples spirit, commitment, dreams and positiveness. If we were to teach people to actually get their hopes up more often, we’d see a country of achievers instead of a country of apathetic couch potatoes breeding potato chips and tater tots. This is one of the worst lines anyone could ever say to you. Talk about lowering the bar. Get your hopes up, and if you’re disappointed learn what went wrong and fix it, don’t just give up. It’s better to burn out than rust out.

3.”That’s just life”
Honestly, can you think of any statement that requires less thought put into it?
This is a comment made by someone who has given up, and can’t see the point to anything of meaning, nor do they want you to do anything that would make them wrong.

4.”This is as good as it gets”
Please. So you’re telling me to stop dreaming? Maybe you’ll settle for less, but don’t you dare tell me to.

These are just a couple. I hope that you share some of yours with us. I’m sure that you all have plenty more to add, so feel free to keep this going and help each other out on what to look for when it comes to statements that secretly take away from us and our capabilities. Until next time!

Still on the subject of colds and flu, my son has been offered a swine flu vaccination and I’m trying to assess the pros and cons. Swine flu does not seem to have been particularly deadly since its original outbreak in Mexico, and in this case there was scant little information about any underlying condition that the victims might have had, such as tuberculosis. The other problem is that viruses mutate, which can make them immune to the vaccine.

When one also considers the fact that vaccines (and especially the rushed out variety) may not necessarily be risk free (for example there may be a link with Guillain-Barre Syndrome) I can’t help wondering if the recommendations to vaccinate are driven largely by thoughts of culpability. The logic is clear; by ‘doing something’ about the perceived and non-quantifyable ‘big risk’ (millions of people dying of ’swine flu’ = fear) you can deflect culpability for any unforseen side-effects. In fact there’s a vested interest in making the ‘big risk’ seem as scary as possible and then ‘doing something’ about it. At least if you want to look good in front of the crowd.

Of course none of this is helpful in making an informed choice as a parent. And the temptation is to side with the advising authorities because nobody can blame you if things work out badly.

For those of you who might have been out-of-the-loop: back in September (after a few crazy months o

For those of you who might have been out-of-the-loop: back in September (after a few crazy months of plans breaking and falling through), I was offered a placement as an AmeriCorps VISTA with Chicago Public Schools, developing after-school programs for homeless students in the shelters. It is a one year term of service, ranging from November ‘09 to November ‘10.

I moved to Oak Lawn, Illinois (a suburb of Chicago) on November 15th, spending about a day there until I had to fly to an orientation in Indianapolis. I’m renting a furnished bedroom with a family and just brought my clothes, computer, a few books and a few DVDs with me. For that day I was here, I walked around and found out that I really did like the community. I found a church to try out, the library, grocery store, a cute little town square and started to understand the public transit. But just 36 hours after arriving, I had to leave for my orientation.

All AmeriCorps VISTAs (which stands for Volunteers in Service to America) that plan on serving for one year must attend a four day Pre-Service Orientation (PSO). The Midwest Regional PSO was held in Indianapolis and there were about 300 of us in attendance. Until we take the oath of service on the last day (which is mandated by the Domestic Service Act), everyone is classified as a VISTA candidate. The majority of the orientation is focused on poverty. We have to learn the causes, the stigma attached and what can be done to alleviate it. To be honest, there were parts that were incredibly depressing and had people in tears. It’s hard to think that so many people that are living just one paycheck away from homelessness – 85% of the poor in this country are stuck in the cycle of generational poverty, meaning that they are the second, third or fourth generation in their family to be enduring this tragedy. And in many cases, they don’t know any other life…and they don’t know how to get out. The idea that people can “lift themselves up by their bootstraps” is a myth and poverty can only be defeated if societies take a real look at how they deal with the poor and the situations that make one poor.

But I have hope. I’ve met the other new VISTAs from Illinois, Chicago, Wisconsin, Ohio, Indiana, the Dakotas and the rest of the midwest. They’re incredibly devoted people. They’re working to get healthcare to those that need it most. They’re trying to make sure that women that have been abused know their options. They’re making sure that the poor and rural in their state has internet access. In the areas that can fight poverty, they work tirelessly. And as a VISTA, we’re only given a monthly stipend that sets us on the same level as the poor that we’re serving.

Two days after taking my oath of service, I began my year of service with Chicago HOPES…which is a part of “Students in Temporary Living Situations”…..which is part of Chicago Public Schools. More on all this confusion later.

I am one of two new VISTAs entering Chicago HOPES. There are already about eight there (which I didn’t know until I got to work on the first day). Officially, a VISTA who works for the program serves as coordinator at two or more homeless shelters in the city, developing and coordinating after-school programs and tutoring for the students that temporarily reside in the shelters.

There are currently 12,525 homeless students in Chicago….and these are just the ones that we know about.

This first week at work was spent getting to know more about the program and what we do. All of the VISTAs have to serve on at least one program sub-committee, as well: Marketing, Volunteer Coordination, Development, Partnerships and Enrichment. If you know me, you know that I’m going to choose Marketing…but plan on playing a part of all of them if I have the time.

On a workday, I wake up at 5:20 a.m. to get ready and walk to catch a 6:30 bus. I’ll take that bus to a train and then the train will go into the city and near my office. The first half of the day we spend in the office, working on our committee work and other office duties that I probably haven’t completely grasped yet. The second half of the day, we spend in the shelters, usually finishing around 5:30 p.m. After that, I’ll take a bus or train to connect to the train I need to take to the bus I’ll take home, arriving between 7:30 and 8:00 p.m. Long day.

During this first week, I also had the opportunity to visit two shelters with the VISTAs that were here before me. I admit: I was frightened going into the first one. It was in an area that is frequented by gang violence and certainly looked the part of a depressed area. But once we got into the shelter and I started working with one of the students (Christian, whom I helped with his reading assignments and putting together a book report), I felt like I was being of use. It’s a small corner of the world and I know that I can’t change the whole world, but I’m going to do my damnedest to be a positive influence on the community that I’m a part of.

That isn’t to say that everything looks to be hunky-doory. There seems to be some office politics and a general resentment in the office for the conglomerate that is “Chicago Public Schools” (which, admittedly, has many policies that are unproductive and downright hurtful when we are trying to help these homeless students). I had hoped to escape all this after working within the MSU CARRS Department for five years (most of you know what I’m talking about).

That isn’t to say that the other VISTAs aren’t amazing. One is Art. He’s in his early 60s, earned his Masters at Harvard, his PhD at Northwestern and is a professor emeritus. After retirement, he wanted to do something to give back to his community. INSPIRING! Then there’s Sean who lives in that neighborhood I described earlier….the one with all the gang violence. He’s originally from Oklahoma and since coming here, has become really involved in his community. But when asked why he didn’t move out of that neighborhood, he reminded us that Jesus wouldn’t leave a community that he was trying to make better…he’d be right there, in the worst neighborhood, trying to encourage change. INSPIRING!

Next week, we’ll learn which shelters we’ll be working in over the coming semester. I’m trying to overcome the shyness I always feel when engaging with a new group of people. It’s been particularly hard this time…I don’t know why. I’m trying my best, though, to open myself up to this new group.

During my free weekends, I’d like to explore the city some and grow to love it. Something I learned this week: my Chicago Public Schools badge will get me into most of the museums and the aquarium FREE. Yay! I’d also like to visit one of the LGBT Community Centers and see if I can get involved in some way.

Eventually, I’ll need to make some friends, too. hahaha.

But for now, I’m just going to concentrate on the job I was selected to do. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: education is the silver bullet. If we can make sure that all students have the same opportunities, they’ll have the same tools to succeed in life. These homeless students are strong, forever adapting to new obstacles changes. I admire them and respect them.

Remember the 80’s? I went to a lot of concerts, bought a lot of records, made a lot of friends

Remember the 80’s? I went to a lot of concerts, bought a lot of records, made a lot of friends, attended many high school functions and sporting events. I learned a lot about myself. I developed my sense of who I am and where I wanted to go in life. I learned to take risks and reap the rewards- as well as how to handle failures a little bit better. These are some of my favorite moments.

First concert: Iron Maiden/ Twisted Sister, Worcester Centrum, January 1985.

I went to the show with two of my friends that my mom and dad worked with at the State Line Auction store. We thought about going to the show weeks before the concert- so we ended up getting seats in the upper balcony nosebleed section. It didn’t matter to me. My friends were there to see Twisted Sister- who I thought were good, but they weren’t the mighty Iron Maiden. Dee Snider was having a hard time singing because of a bout with the flu- so he would run off the stage during some of the solo sections and had to rehydrate himself.

I sang every word to the entire Iron Maiden show. I lost my voice and had bells ringing in my ears for a couple of days. I bought the Powerslave tour shirt when bands would sell baseball jersey length sizes. I converted my friends from being Twisted Sister fans to Iron Maiden fans. I would see the band on 4 subsequent tours- but their stage show and ability to connect with everyone from the front row to the back was a tell tale sign they would be around for future generations to follow.

First job: Mr. Otto’s Flower shop. I was 14 at the time. I learned so much about the flower delivery business- how to interact with customers, the personalized touch, how to make arrangements, the degree of politeness necessary to make the customers feel special and that appearances go a long way. I only stayed there for 6 months before moving on to a cafeteria job at the Winchendon School, but I applied a lot of what I learned from Cliff and Keith to my philosophy with deejaying. Years later as an adult, I would get the opportunity to bowl on the same team as Keith on Monday nights before he retired from bowling. Amazing how your life can come full circle.

I also remember saving my best friend’s prom in 1988 by quickly running around to gather our equipment and getting what would could from our collections. I remember the church dances, our drive to start a teen center called the Hot Spot, the school football games, the bonfires and pep rallies, and the sense that our town was a nurturing, small town community where you really gained the chance to know everyone.

I thank the people who challenged my shy ways, who encouraged me to step outside of the boundaries I set for myself and become a better person as a result. I hope I have been able to give you that same level of courage, friendship and insight that you’ve given to me. We can each come from different backgrounds and different worlds and still find some level of common ground.

It’s good sometimes to reflect on our time growing up, see where we are today and champion our accomplishments.
