Originally discharged and staying with family, Mom’s spirits had lifted considerably, along with her appetite. Which is a good thing. So we will ride through this little hiccup together. So far so good. Tiring but good. Mom may be small but she’s a fighter. And my old man, he’s already become a permanent fixture around her. Sometimes I wonder at how much more a man could give of himself. I think about the stories that shaped the person he is today. Underprivileged upbringing. Broken childhood. Not much of a childhood having had to earn his own keeps at barely 6 years of age. Running the house at 10. Fending his sister from school bullies, and years down the road, losing a sister to cancer. Now, seeing the person he loves the most, his wife grapple with yet again a common enemy, cancer. He has every right to be bitter and cynical. But my old man, he gives and gives. I know now that he is the kindest, most stedfast friend, a father, a brother and a lover a person could ask for, and i get to call him Dad. And that which is best in me — I owe to him.

A 14-cm tumor was removed from her womb in a surgery that overshot by more than 6 hours when mom complained of bloating in her stomach some months ago. She is back at the hospital every weekly for labs and chemotherapy treatment for the next 6 months to treat her ovarian cancer. Some common side-effects of chemotherapy includes loss of appetite, depression, hair loss and soreness of the body.

Taking the “no guts, no glory” approach to life often results in experiences we’d not normally have. Online dating is certainly an experience replete with examples. It’s a kind of interesting site; on the one hand, they advertise that they do background checks to make sure that the post-ers aren’t felonious or married, but I’d think that perhaps there’s no screen for people who don’t understand marketing oneself. THe little vignettes above are the last month’s worth of wink-ers. At least perhaps they winked. True.com has graciously sent me many fellows who, if I do reply, profess total ignorance as to how I came to know about them. Hmmmmmm.

The most interesting effect of collecting all these photos is how closely they appear to resemble the pederast postings of Grand Prairie Texas, as well as the most wanted. The most wanted do tend more towards black and hispanic, but then those are not in my search pattern on True, either.

It can be well-known that somebody was in trouble when they try to suggest not to do something. This will be clearer when they talk something relevant to what we might have earlier suggested them not to do.

Every so often, I feel like people should come with some sort of disclaimer — “I do these things, I don’t always mean to do them, and you might find them annoying.” Everybody has little ticks, strange habits, oddities, things they do or say that they don’t notice but everyone around them does. Sometimes they’re super irritating (like that girl who incessantly twists that one strand of hair between her fingers in the movie theater throughout the entire duration of the movie).  Sometimes they’re innocuous (almost cute) quirks.  Deal-breaker or adorable, either way I wouldn’t mind knowing in advance if the person I’m about to have coffee with for the first time has a few ticks that might catch me off guard… like, you know, he cleans his teeth at the end of the meal with his napkin…

So friends, here is my disclaimer:

• Whenever I order from a counter, whether at Starbucks or the Carnegie Deli, I stand on my tiptoes. Regardless of the counter’s height (obviously).

• If I tell you I’m going to email you, I emphasis that promise by air-typing… with both hands.

• I can’t sleep with the closet door open.

• When I hear classical music, the fingers on my left hand start playing the air violin.

• I hate commercials on the radio, so I flip between stations to avoid them. I also change radio stations to avoid Billy Joel songs.
