Mood: Tired With 11 days to go until I leave, I’ve come to realise how little I’ve done

Mood: Tired

With 11 days to go until I leave, I’ve come to realise how little I’ve done by way of preparation. My dad remarked yesterday that I hadn’t even packed yet, which at the time I thought was a bizarre thing to say, but upon reflection it is probably high time I put some thought towards it. I also (to the horror of my mother) haven’t booked accommodation in Southampton yet, but I’ll get around to it… soon :p.

Anyway, it got me thinking what I should pack (read: what I should leave behind) and how else I could best prepare for an experience that is surely going to be different to anything else I’ve encountered. (Sure, several other things could fall under this category – such as coming to uni, watching my first football match and – hell – being born, but I’m sure you know what I mean.)

So far, I have decided to bring clothes (it was a tough decision but in the end decency won out over lighter baggage), my laptop, some study notes which I have purchased and will need for private study (woo hoo), a new wallet, and… I’m sure there’s several other things which I will eventually bring but haven’t yet decided upon. I’m terrible at this packing business – I blame years of dependency upon my mother during school camps (AARAN YOU’VE FORGOTTEN A SPARE PAIR OF CLEAN UNDERWEAR. AND YOUR TOOTHBRUSH.). Oh well, I’m sure she’ll help me one last time, before I magically develop self-sufficiency skills in the five and a bit months that I’ll be away. As for other preparations, heaven help me. I’ll wing it (because that always works for exams, sarcasm intended).

I’ve now (as of 12:52 a.m.) finished the enrolment process, and so have a shiny new student email address and a rockingly symmetrical (of sorts) student number. Hopefully I find out my timetable soon and get things sorted on that front.

Anyway it’s probably time that I went to sleep, what with it being 2 a.m. and all. (Jokes about it being 6 hours past my bed time are not appreciated, guys.) Tomorrow I’ll start drawing up that essential planning tool, the to-do list. Fun fun fun.

Laters skaters.

This is the new EP by Vague Existence, entitled ‘Blizzard of Ashes’…you can grab it from this location for 7 days…after that it will be in some other location. There are four songs of damp chime, bass pound and drum machine vogue. Vague Existence is Adam (the drummer what played in Burning Sensation) and I. It was recorded one afternoon while Adam was visiting San Francisco. Vague Existence is mainly influenced by dim lighting, tropical diseases and endless expanses of alternating concrete and marble stretching out into the horizon.

Thu 26 Nov 2009 The Royal Navy aboard “Adventure” depart Perth twice in one day We have

Thu 26 Nov 2009

The Royal Navy aboard “Adventure” depart Perth twice in one day

We have just re-read the last paragraph of the last Blog – how naïve we were!!!!!!

We sailed from Perth, full of expectation, excitement and enthusiasm – sunscreen applied liberally, sunhats adorned, the sails went up and the fenders and warps were stowed in the bowels of the ship not to be seen for another fortnight. The ship was made ship shape – we were at sea. The VHF radio sprung into life advising the skipper we did indeed have to take the trysail track with us and not leave it for shipping to Sydney. The Skipper swore heavily and dutifully announced that we were not allowed to laugh about this for two years.

The sails came down, the fenders and warps were recovered (just as an indicator this is 60 minutes of aerobic activity-moving dinghy, flankers and opening and closing forepeak stowage) and the ship was made ready to go alongside. The trysail tack was recovered within 30 seconds with a slick manoeuvre but we were now significantly behind the other two boats-more importantly we were now chasing the weather window to get round Cape Leeuwin and enter the notoriously awesome Southern Ocean. After some creative navigation and re-hoisting of sails etc we were now moving by wind power alone – fantastic feeling – we rendezvoused with the other two vessels on the start line…. but look… there were four of us in formation 2. A whale had come to see us off. All four of us crossed the start line together and we were racing……………fine seas and searing sun – the Skipper’s promise of barefoot sailing and sundowners for the off watch was all looking good.

But wait – the Gods of wind and sea had something else in mind – we had been completely lulled into a false sense of security. Despite the flying fish and the array of birdlife the weather was beginning to turn. A reef was put in and shaken out then put in again then shaken again – some good practice for all the crew. A full main and a No 2 Yankee soon were overpowering the boat and it was time to stand back and have a rethink – two reefs and a sail change – not easy to do in these seas – fore sail off and we reduced to a number 3 yankee – the sea and the wind had changed considerably for the worse and this made the simple task really quite onerous- the speed of the change caught us dressed improperly and we were soaked – nonetheless it was still satisfying to look back on completion at a job well done.

There are –

Feeling seasick

Feeling as if you are going to die

Wishing you were dead

The sea has been unrelenting with 30ft waves and huge walls of water giving the yacht a completely unpredictable motion. All of the crew have been in the realms of the above – from number 1 through to the majority suffering 2 and 3. We thought at one point we had only sailed with 14 people but it has now been confirmed that all 15 of us have been upright at some point. That being said we are all a little bruised, battered and tired and looking forward to maybe some relief from this non-stop roller coaster courtesy of King Neptune.

A good indicator to the sea state is the fact we have seen no other yachts or sails and to that end have only seen one small coaster who glided past us in the night – we all had visions of them playing snooker on their stable platform and watching agog from their bridge at the insanity that was being played out on their starboard side. Despite all of this, spirit is high and morale was added to with the showers being put on today – our very own human washing machine!

There is a real sense of achievement to round one of the three hallowed Capes under sail and ADVENTURE sits 30NM south of Bald Head (appropriate for some) South Australia. 300NM of challenging sailing complete – what is in store for the next 2000NM?

SHOUT OUTS!

Steve says that water doesn’t go down the plughole the other way round on this yacht despite being in the southern hemisphere – water goes anywhere it can find a home!!! Love to all XXXX

Pete says hi to Tina, Ellie Emma and James, get packing for Christmas and Emma, stop dancing until after we get home! XXXX A big hello to all back in the GOSCC – after several days of heavy weather, this is still better than being in work!

Col says hello to Pagey Girl. Just had my first shower for 4 days; feel so much better. I love you and miss you lots and can’t wait to see you in Sydney. Not too long now. Enjoy your ‘James Bond Night’ in the Mess. XXX

Jules, if you’re reading, hope you’re well and the pregnancy is on track, Good luck with the birth!

Neil says Hi to Debs xx, The BFBs, all at Vivid and Hazel & Giles at work, been classic Southern Ocean so far. I’m steering for the light breezes and flat seas but can’t see them whilst we’re in the trough of another monster wave!!

Sara says hi to all back home and has enjoyed the start of this adventurous sail in the Southern Ocean around Australia. Hoping that the seas will be calm and the wind strong to allow us to have a swift and safe passage for our travels. Missing her boo! Counting the days!. Love to all. Sxx

Mike says hi to all his family and friends, special mention to Ben and Jess, hope you are behaving? Hopefully today is a day to celebrate but I will find out when I get back home J Love to Vee, hope you are feeling ok? Must keep battling with Neptune, love to all Mwah xxxxx

Amanda says hi to family and friends. Today I mostly feeling sick and being sick!!! Oh what a great way to spend £650. Lets get Sydney as soon as!!!!!!

Kevin says hi Ros and the kids and Andy if you are tracking us. Should in Sydney possibly 6/7th Dec.

Olly gives a shout out to Lucy and Connor!

Tom says hi to all at home. Spent the morning mostly getting wet, then more wet and enjoyed his journey through a few monster waves! But all good fun! Missing you loads Annie, can’t wait to see you again. Love U xxx

Rich says hi to all, good breeze out here, rolling around like a bugger, loving the first few days and here’s to having some sunshine soon! Alex, miss you loads, hope Oliver isn’t keeping you up too much. Big hug for you both. Bring on Sydney! Lots of Love. Rich. Xxxx

Claire et al., Enforced bulimia, coping well and having fun. Jeremy.xxx

Just thought I’d post a few photos from the Super X in Perth.

All images shot with a Nikon D3 with 200-400 f4 and 70-200 f2.8 lenses at ISO 2500/3200. Imagine how good the D3s will be???

It was an awesome event, although shooting makes it hard to really know whats going on with the heats and results.

Because of the TV coverage, it’s just flat out, no time to rest, and it’s all over in 2 hours.

The lites was dominated by Matt Moss, who now has already defended last years lites title with 3 rounds to go.

the opens on the other hand is not a one way street like last year.

Chad Reed had his hands full on the night, with Dan Reardon taking the podium win and Jay Marmont coming third. Reed’s starts suffered all night and ultimately cost him the chance at a win, well that’s my thoughts anyway.

Dan Reardon taking the win. If there was one more lap Reed may have just got there, who knows!!

Michael Byrne leading Troy Carroll and Cam Taylor into the whoops section!!

This image of Chad Reed demonstrates the way he seems to ride the whoops. He is by far the quickest rider on these sections, and it seems he just floats over them!!

This is my 2nd favorite image from the night (Monster Girl No 1!!) This is the 2nd last lap of the final, and Chad Reed is chasing down Dan Reardon (in the background), in what was one of the most exciting races in history.

through this hospital room.
Smiles so bright,
ease feelings of doom.
Pain racked bodies,
weighed heavily down.
Upon little faces,
a refusal to frown.
Eyes full of fear,
but no sign of regret.
This illness consumes,
how unfair can this get.
With years too few,
to be considered a life,
yet in their young voices,
Their happiness hides,

Rumours had been rife that the Too Funky star was headed down under, and today his Australian trip has been confirmed.

Heading to Australia for the first time since 1988, the Wham! star and solo pop vocalist will perform at Member’s Equity Stadium on February 20. He will then perform in Sydney at Sydney Football Stadium on February 26.

He will perform tracks from the early days, Wham! and his latest material.

Promoter Paul Dainty said it was thrilling to bring Michael back to the country following his Faith tour in the 80s.

“He is a consummate performer and will deliver a stunning show to his fans who have waited 22 years to see him perform in Australia,” Dainty said.

Michael has performed for more than 2 million fans on this 25 Live arena tour so far. More than 350,000 people flocked to his London performances alone.

Michael has sold more than 100 million pop albums, had six American number one singles and won plenty of awards for tunes including Faith, Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go, Careless Whisper, One More Try, Freedom, Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me and Too Funky.

If you haven’t already heard the exciting news – like those who made it to the Paddo gig – Nathan has just been formally invited to play at South by Southwest 2010, in Austin Texas. For the uninitiated, SXSW is one of the world’s biggest music festivals showcasing hundreds of acts from around the world over 80 stages in downtown Austin. It’s even more special considering that only roughly 20 per cent of the acts playing at the festival are from outside of the US.

Other already announced showcasing bands from WA include Karnivool and The Chevelles, and from the east coast Paul Dempsey, Dappled Cities and Darren Hanlon. More to be announced soon.

Those of us who were down at the Paddington Alehouse last Sunday got to witness for themselves what Austin is in for next March. Talk about a rockin set – and not an acoustic guitar in sight (apart from one song with the 12-string – a Dylan-esque move perhaps?)

(My camera wasn’t loving the lighting, as you can see)

Surviving winter in the great outdoors is difficult especially when body temperature is unreg

Surviving winter in the great outdoors is difficult especially when body temperature is unregulated and subjected to subfreezing temperatures. Insects and amphibians have some remarkable adaptations that enable them to successfully over-winter.

The dangers of ice formation in insects and amphibians are similar to those of freezing in plants. Ice must be prevented from growing within cells, instead growing in a controlled fashion in spaces between cells.

Insects either allow themselves to freeze or they avoid freezing altogether. Each strategy is not without risks.

Insects that avoid freezing, like the mountain pine bark beetles, actively lower their super-cooling point, and prevent ice formation by lowering their freezing point enabling them to tolerate temperatures as low as minus 40 degrees Fahrenheit.

In order to achieve this level of tolerance they select a dry hibernating site. A waxy outer layer is impermeable to water and it serves as an excellent mechanical barrier against external ice seeding. One organ within bugs that is particularly susceptible to freezing is their gut. So insects empty it, completely, before the onset of hibernation.

In order to super-cool their blood (correctly called hemolymph) they manufacture anti-freeze proteins, alcohols, sugars and even ethylene glycol (the same compound we use in our radiators). The correct mix of anti-freeze compounds blocks ice formation and prevents its growth.

Supper-cooling is a gamble. At any temperature below 32 degrees Fahrenheit the only stable state in which water can exist is solid. Any kind of disturbance for a super-cooled bug results in spontaneous flash freezing – an instant death.

The only way to avoid this risk is to promote early and gradual freezing of fluids between cells more specifically in the cell walls. And it’s a strategy used by a variety of insects, some frogs, garter snakes and hatchlings of the painted turtle.

There are four requirements in order to successfully freeze: ice growth is promoted at temperatures just beneath 32 degrees Fahrenheit; it must be restricted to spaces between cells; the total amount of body ice is limited; and cell membranes must be protected from structural damage.

The ability to create early ice formation is unique and it is undertaken by special ice-attracting proteins in fluids between cells in their walls. These proteins are manufactured in the autumn and disappear in the spring. They essentially reduce energy barriers needed to make ice and promote a lattice (just like a fence) for ice formation.

Here’s the tricky part: If ice grows unchecked (i.e. larger and larger) it will dehydrate the inside of cells. The lethal limit of ice, in a living organism, seems to be about 65 percent of total body weight. In order to control ice, once its formation is induced, freeze-tolerant organisms must also make anti-freeze proteins. Their job is to keep ice masses small.

Some bugs in the far north are so well adapted that they posses the ability to switch yearly between freezing or super-cooling!

How do insects know when to get ready for winter? Just like plants in the Northern Hemisphere insects rely on low, above freezing, air temperatures and reduced daylight hours as their cue to get ready to freeze, or barf and get on the super-cooling rollercoaster.

Land hibernating frogs, with water permeable skin, must withstand freezing. They over-winter beneath a scant cover of leaf litter under snow where they may experience subfreezing temperatures and are not able to control their body temperatures. In one of Mother Nature’s most awesome winter feats spring peepers, chorus frogs, grey tree frogs and wood fogs freeze solid and resemble a hard baseball.

They do this by initiating freezing at minus 36 degrees Fahrenheit with high amounts of the sugar glucose (rather than alcohols that bugs use). Glucose is extremely important in protecting membranes like skin.

Very suddenly glycogen (stored glucose) in the liver is rapidly converted to glucose (sugar) and dumped quickly into the blood stream. In fact the glucose level increases 200-fold in about eight hours, until the frog becomes severely diabetic.

Not only is this risky but it becomes a race to deliver the sugar to the body tissues while freezing is progressing. A strong heart is mandatory to pump and within one minute of the first ice formation a frog’s heart beat doubles.

Within 20 hours after initial freezing 60 to 65 percent of its body water is frozen. Their heart stops, breathing ceases – the frog teeters on the edge of life. The thin litter layer and a good insulative snow cover are of paramount importance. For no frog has yet been found to survive below minus 19 degrees Fahrenheit.

Once temperatures rise in the spring, within an hour of thawing, the heart resumes beating, six hours later at 41 degrees Fahrenheit the heart rate is back to normal.

To freeze or not to freeze? It’s a question that Mother Nature has at least two exceptional answers for.

CONTENTMENT: the state of being satisfied with one’s current life situation.

And that’s what I felt when i stepped out of the shower today.

anway, worked the whole of friday at burger bistro (Day #6) and chilled with them afterwards.

woke up on saturday morning and headed to leederville flea market (which was shit btw). but saturday night was good because we headed to ‘The Court’ which was interesting and eyeopening. And then we headed to metro city for the End of Semester Party which was really good. Music was good, company was awesome with the girls, issac and george, and fast eddy’s at the end!

Fast Eddy’s is quite expensive. Fish and Chips, Teriyaki Rice, Chilli Bowl, Wedges & Chips and 2 milkshakes came up to $80+. After supper was a good soaking in the bathtub for a long long time.

Didn’t feel like doing anything on Sunday (Day #8), just headed for mass and dinner at Tommy. But a sudden thought came to me, what if our guardian angle was in our daily lives. They might take a different form daily, but everyday we encounter/bump into them at least once (as their form up checking up on us). And then i stared at this old man in the same pew as me, and wondered if he was my guardian angle.

I miss my guardian angle, the only one that has left me feeling protected, safe, and loved.

The coming week’s gonna be jam packed filled with activities!!! can’t wait!!!

So yeah. Tom creates another blog. Wonder if this one will last!

Click the ‘Life Story’ Button for the about me section..

Contemplating packing or not. We have to be out of this house next month. Which is the house is a mess. I either need to clean it or start putting stuff in boxes. Either require work. Which is hard to come by at present..!
Had the last 3 days off work. Which has been ok. Went out Saturday night with Andrei to the court. Which was fun. Met some pretty cool people. Kyla and her friend Jason, and Alishia . And some randoms who poured us water.. who were sniffing.. uh. We wont go into that . The past two days I haven’t done much. A few friends came over Sunday night and played Wii. Which was fun. But they went home pretty early. Monday I did nothing. Well I lie. I had to go up the street as I ran out of cigarettes -.-

Talked to Ron on the phone last night. Haven’t seen that boy in a while. He is coming over Wednesday night which should be good fun. Just like old times. Trying to rebuild friendships with old friends and friends and school friends that I haven’t seen in a while. When I was working at a cafe doing split shifts it kind of fucked everything up. So I haven’t seen a lot of my old school friends in.. months. Some even years! My friend Lisa is having a get together this week which everyone is going. An opportunity awaits! Also catching up with Matthew Thursday night. Which should be fun going to see new moon after work!

The news is annoying me. All you hear about is some politician sniffing a chair or how the young people are drinking too much. There has to be more than that happening in Perth! Then again.. I’m not surprised. They found water on the moon! Would be fun to live on the moon. But then again. WHY would you need to.
Late night trading starts in the ‘Inner City’ from January 1. About time. But its only the City and Subiaco. Could be more.. Still good! means the city will be open until 9pm every weekday except for just the normal friday..

Optus recently had a Volleyball day. Which I missed because I don’t work for them anymore. Denni kept me informed though! I miss zone. Oh if only they payed more..

A lot to do in the next month. Involves paying for a trip to Sydney next year with Rebecca and Andrei. Possibly finding a new job if I can’t be transfered to a store south of the river. And of course moving house. Which I’m still unsure on where to move to. Mum? Dad? or move out. Suggestions would be appreciated! Met my Mum’s new bf not long ago. He seems pretty cool. And has dune buggies which are surprisingly fun! But they had to find a helmet that would fit my head.. -.- YES i have a big head OK! Just means bigger brains!… Well i hope so anyway. He has a pretty big house in Oakford. Next to Byford. 5 acres. Great house but Ages away from anywhere. About 45 minutes to an hour to the city and no Public Transport. Which should be ok soon as I get a moped next month. Yup I still don’t have my drivers license so I have resorted to a moped. Which is sort of a last resort. As moving to the other side of the city would mean I would have to travel quite far for friends or even work. And having no Public transport doesn’t help. Well done Transperth!

Sterosonic this Sunday! The start of the festival season should be great fun. Going with Kyri after work and meeting up with a few friends. Can not wait! Will post some pics from the day.

So yeah. I could easily write more but it’s time to eat something. I will update this soon. Stay tuned!

While advertising agencies make many thousands of dollars promoting the Perth International Art Fest

While advertising agencies make many thousands of dollars promoting the Perth International Art Festival (PIAF), students from the Fremantle John Curtin College of Arts were expected to donate their time last Sunday, as extras for a TV commercial that was shot around His Majesty’s Theatre.

It seems rather strange that kids are expected to work for ‘fame’ only, while everyone else involved gets paid very well. Of course parents also had to ‘donate’ their time to get the kids to the location. Bad manners PIAF!

To stay with John Curtin. Why is it that the year 11 students finished this semester 4 weeks prior to the start of the official school holidays? What are working parents supposed to do with 16 year old kids roaming the streets and beaches without much supervision all day?
