Host of the program “Awam Ki Awaz” on CNBC visits city courts in Karachi to see the impr

Host of the program “Awam Ki Awaz” on CNBC visits city courts in Karachi to see the improvements made by the much vaunted (by “civil society” and the “honorable lawyers”) Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry.

I guess it was a fair trade to give away Musharraf and 2 years of Pakistan, and get Iftikhar Chaudhry in return ?

To see normally “harami” lawyers portrayed as great saviours of “civil society” by Geo and AAJ TV.

Whoever thought up THAT script ? Could it be someone who was not familiar with the realities of Pakistani lawyers ?

Geo and AAJ happen to run programs made by foreign government agencies (Voice of America – VOA) and run them so they are indistinguishable from their own programming. Which media channel would tolerate that kind of brand dilution – especially in Pakistan where airing a U.S. propaganda channel would not exactly be a commercially profitable move.

How much are Geo and ARY “overpaid” for their services ?

In the same way that the USIS overpaid for printing material at the Jamaat-e-Islami printing presses in the 1960s – as a way to clandestinely (and “legally”) fund them ?

This video has lawyers fighting with the reporter instead of accepting realities (so that they can prepare themselves to fix them).

One lawyer lies by saying he has never seen a policeman take a bribe. The reporter says she has seen it already in her short trip to the city courts.

This is the result when lawyers refuse to condemn their own. Why ? Because they have a “lawyer’s biradari” (a term they seem to be quite proud of).

Which explains why a complaint against Iftikhar Chaudhry was not examined by the Supreme Judicial Council but was squelched by his colleagues on the Supreme Court. What was so damaging in the accusations against Iftikhar Chaudhry that they did not want to bring it up to scrutiny ? What were the reasons for refusing to look at the accusations ?

The Pakistani public still does not know if there ever was an analysis done of the accusations against Iftikhar Chaudhry – were they correct or were they incorrect ?

The public is split between people who could see what was happening, party workers (each supporting their own), and the rest were non-thinkers. Asma Shirazi on Geo TV is one of those. At least Hamid Mir knows why he hates Musharraf or why he wants to make it appear that he hates him. Yet it is presenters on TV like Asma Shirazi who cannot control their facial expressions – they are so SURE that the story told by the “media” is the correct one, and anyone supporting Musharraf MUST be mistaken.

Evidently she did not feel any sign of disgust when she glad-handed the many parliamentarians on her former show “Parliament Cafe” on Geo TV. Fine specimens of integrity those.

Asma has now been replaced by an equally naive and perhaps even more jahil lady presenter on Geo TV, who has her own show where she is utterly incapable of asking any incisive question of her guests.

Musharraf interview on Frontline with Kamran Shahid on Express News TV – Sept 13, 2009

Kamran Shahid, representing the younger, and possible more urbane (i.e. post-newspaper era) journalists, who has previously conducted reasonably combatitive interviews with other politicians, here tackles Musharraf.

This interview encapsulates nicely the disparate arguments given earlier in the series “Why Musharraf Was Removed” on this youtube channel (and on this blog).

The answer is that Musharraf was considered cooperative but not totally servile.

Servile observance is much more forthcoming from the feudal elements of Pakistan. They are used to that model of behaviour where their slaves are servile, while they themselves are servile to a bigger entity.

From expansion of drone bases to expansion of U.S. “diplomatic mission” to many acres of land right next to centers of power in Islamabad. And the proliferation of Blackwater (or whatever new name it has acquired) presence.

Also some well placed criticism of the “journalists” like Ahmed Rashid, who sit in the U.S. and act like all too keen advisors. They are akin to the native american scouts who helped Europeans to expand into North America to the detriment of their own people.

However even Ahmed Rashid is probably better than some of the wolf-in-sheeps-clothing “journalists” like Hamid Mir and some others, who are not presenters of truth, but presenters of controversy. Thus they did not highlight the real and budding problems for Pakistan ahead of time, and then wind up blaming Musharraf for them – for example the power crisis.

Although the power crisis is exacerbated by the PPP government’s refusal to pay the IPPs (independent power producers), and negotiation of newer power contracts at higher rates (perhaps is a way to strongarm the IPPs to pay “commission” to Zardari), there still was a (albeit smaller) crisis in the making because of all the consumer electronics (ballooning of airconditioners) which ramped up consumption.

Where were the big business interests (once again they demonstrate how big business in Pakistan has not graduated from the “Seth” mentality seeking political favour under one leadership or the other regardless of the overall policy impact for Pakistan), and where were the media in highlight the imminent power crisis.

Also the blind spot in the media to the reality of the “Lawyer’s movement”. Their lack of focus on why the Supreme Judicial Council failed to examine the accusations against Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry. The financial backing by Benazir to get better terms in NRO negotiations and after the departure of the PPP “former-Jiyala” lawyers, the resuscitation by Nawaz Sharif to a movement that mustered few lawyers, though it compensated with support from Nawaz Sharif voting base.

Add to this the presence of foreign funding to Geo and AAJ TV in the form of payments for airing VOA programs.

And you have the makings of a perfect storm of media coverage that covers one side of the story, but chooses to keep quiet about the moderating caveats in the story. This “movement” has been likened to the “mass uprising” in Iran against the Mossadegh government by Zaid Hamid (the Brasstacks defence analyst). The anti-Mossadegh movement was a CIA operation to remove a leader who was being seen as constraining for U.S. interest at that time.

Although realistically, in the case of Musharraf, even if there was a need for “regime change” by the U.S. it was probably a combination of getting better terms for drone flights, expansion of U.S. embassy as well as reintroducing the policial figures back into Pakistan.

This was a need probably realized by Musharraf himself – the removal of the political forces (which includes feudal and entrenched forces) had created a vacuum, which rather than being filled by educated youth and new idealistic leaders wound up being filled by the religious forces which were primed (with weapons) following the Afghan wars, Saudi funding (proxy war against Iran) and drug money to crimianl elements in FATA.

The corruption probes had mainly affected PPP and PML-N (and PML-Q some of who had been forgiven for exigency sake). Many cases were instigated by PPP or PML-N themselves against the other – and not Musharraf. The cases had languished in courts and the incompetent (and underpaid) legal system had not handled them well. In the absence of these political forces, the “religious” parties saw great opportunity (as if there can be such a thing in Islam – since what is a “religious” in a state full of muslims ?).

The fallout of 911 and the activated anti-U.S. sentiment did not help either – as the religious parties could make that their banner (even though when the time comes they would kowtow to the U.S. even more). Thus the religious parties used this time to foment domestic dissention at a time of great foreign threat to Pakistan.

On the other hand, it may have been used by Musharraf as well – NOT as media is prone to say to “bolster his own position” – but to argue for why Pakistan ‘could not do more”. Yet few in the media understood or bothered to care for these undercurrents.

This is Haris B Saif from Karachi and I am a die hard fan of my legendary Leader Mr Pervez Musharr

This is Haris B Saif from Karachi and I am a die hard fan of my legendary Leader Mr Pervez Musharraf .I don’t feel any worries since my leader is there for our nation but I could not understand in the presence of elected parliament why Supreme court 14 member bench had heard petition regarding 3rd Nov emergency however it’s the direct aggrieved party. The most outrageous aspect of this case is bench member’s, who must have their personal grudge with former president so what we should be the verdict ? Justice! Forget it ….. This is high time for our nation to assess the quality of leadership and essence of democracy not go for sham labels. Mr Musharraf always been father figure to me and I have seen my father in him since my father demise in 1999 .I always used to write him but since his resignation I could not able to write him. I convey my hardcore support to him and please do share his email address with me.

Swat Deal was made with Sufi Mohammad, Cleric from Red Mosque school of thought, and it was welcome by 99% of political parties. Later horrible incidents were claimed justified openly on media likewise the red mosque force used to do in past. When swat extremists were few kilometers away from Islamabad, according to JUI head, then operation Rah-e-Raast was conducted on the request of government and then appreciated by all those political parties that had a different vision before. By keeping swat deal in front I wonder why operation silence was wrong when we had extremists in the heart of capital and what would have been the consequences if safe passage had been given to Red Mosque extremists? These parties are appreciating army for operation at one side of a country and criticizing on the other side of country where real insurgency is going on. Why don’t government announces gallantry award for late A.Bugti who laid his life in combat with Pak Army? In India not a single political party demanded for filing cases against NSG (National Security Guards) for its operation in Mumbai 26/11 but here parties are dying to file cases against SSG operations for political point scoring. Our parties don’t have the vision for the betterment of a country and here parties rather do politics on the basis of popular demand but it’s now high time to do visionary politics before it’s too late.

99’ COUP would have been much earlier if nuclear test had been averted and later army was not behind Sharif’s nominated army chief since the resentment of his initiative on Kargil war .Lastly one can get great idea about his courage by his selfish exile deal and he has been in state of denial until Saudi officials publicly disclosed it.We all know Punjab is ¾ in population proportion and that is where PML N is restricted with high popularity rating of Mr Nawaz Sharif so we can say he is the most popular leader at provincial level rather than national level. Punjab should not project its response as national response regarding issues or personalities of other provinces. It’s a pity that Former PM Z.A.Bhutto death sentence decision could not be revisited however another former convicted PM with a confession has already been acquitted .One of army ruler of 80’s has been paid presidential homage for two decades and another is being targeted. Qaid-e-Tehreeq Altaf Hussan is rightly said that Punjab has to play very important role regarding national integrity.

Having seen the jang article about KPT (http://thenews.com.pk/top_story_detail.asp?Id=24475), i dont understand what government of pakistan does in relation to port authorities and land the belongs of sindh government and the federation.

This has also happened when pervez musharraf was president and the sindh government. The land was a case between the sindh government and federal government in relation to Bundal and Buddo islands and EMAAR, the dubai property company.

http://www.paktribune.com/news/print.php?id=158309

The federal government should by law restrict the provincial government in relation to port authority land unless of course a method of joint ownership was agreed.

I do not agree with handing of KPT land to individuals which can be developed to earn money for pakistan by gst or services tax on shops or businesses in that area in terms of leasing and getting lease money every year and sales revenue. KPT and sindh govt could use the land themselves to earn and generate revenue for themselves.

Also any land that is put out to be leased to a company or an individual to build houses or shops should be put up in a newspaper for bids prior the land being given.

This way the sindh government and any other provincial or local government or port authorityy maximise revenue from the lease.

I believe pakistan needs to have a register of all leases and freeholds of lands with terms and amount paid for lease and freehold.

Under pervez musharraf as president of pakistan, there was a land register database that was coming into being , no news of it has come out since but i hope that computerised database is used to shorten the purchase process, end land disputes and also to fix lease extensions and prices for new leases and get as money in as possible from buying/sellig/leasing of land.

So when lease comes up for extension a price can be set in comparison with other leased land near the land. When a freehold comes up for sale, there should be no land dispute and the public notification prior to purchase of land ie houses or shops bought by people in areas such as karachi or lahore which are lease from dha or other local authorities the period can be shortened by inquiring from the land registry. This is another way to generate money for pakistan coffers.

This is based on maximizing money coming and also having a land register that can be used to solve fights over land in courts and make sure the pakisatn government regardless of which party comes in . The government will always have an updated land register and lease register so they can get as much money as possible out of pakistan’s land from houses, shops, offices, agricultural land, oil (any part of pakistan), gas (any part of pakistan), mines for mineral wealth (swat area).

Yasin Malik criticizes those who take domestic politics and take it overseas in other countries. Com

Yasin Malik criticizes those who take domestic politics and take it overseas in other countries. Compares the unity among overseas Hindus who while critical of each other inside India, do not distinguish between themselves when they are overseas and lobby for India.

This seems to catch Imran Khan in his tracks as he is in the middle of a tirade against our leaders and taking it overseas.

This is one of the weaknesses of Imran Khan, that while railing (correctly) against the (usually nonthinking) Pakistanis who start acting like they are Western themselves and take their case to the West, he himself allows himself to succumb to that. Taking the domestic politics of Pakistan and taking it to the U.K. “advising” them about the unsuitability of such and such candidate in Pakistan. All the while being unthinking about the impression this creates in people in Pakistan. The “going to London” to advise outsiders is not much different from the behaviour he has criticized earlier.

While it maybe borne of frustration as local power centers – feudals and others create very little space for someone like Imran Khan in Pakistani (and esp. non-Karachi) politics, but then he makes the mistake of taking his complaints to the U.K. as if they are his masters. In addition he makes the foolish mistake of going against the MQM – which while flawed in some respects – is the closest thing to a middle class oriented party, and which has in recent years taken pains to bring itself out from the cold (mainly thanks to Musharraf who allowed them the space to conduct themselves with honour and legitimacy in Karachi as opposed to the “choron ki tarha” they had to operate when Nawaz Sharif started military operations in Karachi, or Benazir refused to accept them as a major player in Sindhi politics as a challenge to her heriditary feudal-on-the-inside/populist-on-the-outside “jaagir” of politics in Sindh).

Imran Khan has similarly played his cards incorrectly by going with the Tehreek-e-Taliban when it was becoming clear to the public that the Tehreek-e-Taliban were more like a criminal organization than anything remotely religious (let alone Sufi-like, although they did have someone named Sufi Muhammed in their ranks).

Imran Khan has played the pro-FATA and “Jirga system” card for a number of years, and it may have seemed fine prior to Musharraf when the “bay zaabtagian” of Nawaz Sharif and Benazir were for all to see. However what he fails to account for is the bulk of the middle class in Pakistan which fails to have ANY sympathy for the “with you but apart” system of FATA which seems very close to mini-feudalism, which has been responsible for their car thefts and all sorts of illegal activity. In addition the wiser among the population may have started to see just how anachronistic the FATA system is in this day and age and how full of potential problems it has always been – some of which have been glaringly exposed in the inability of the existing system in FATA to demonstrate any type of people power that can rise against criminal elements who take up residence there. This is because this type of activity was prevalent in FATA – i.e. “sanctuary for money” and all sorts of other activity that would be illegal in other parts of Pakistan. So ordinary citizens of Pakistan would naturally ask “what distinguishes FATA to have rights to do illegal activity that are denied to those living in our cities” ?

Imran Khan is standing on the wrong side of the fence, as public opinion increasingly sees the realities emerging as the existing setup faces the stresses which is exposing it’s weaknesses.

Najam Sethi skewers Hamid Mir, Ansar Abbasi and possibly Talat Hussain for deliberate lying on Baitullah Mehsud’s involvement.

He states that while there existed evidence to the contrary, these anchors deliberately aired programs after Benazir Bhutto’s assassination which aimed to absolve him from the murder.

Role of “media groups” like Geo TV and AAJ TV

What is interesting is that the anchors who fall into the category outlined are precisely the ones who are the most highly paid by Geo and AAJ TV.

And coincidentally these two channels are the ones who air VOA (Voice of America) programs.

The same channels pay excessively to anchors who have been known to lie in the media.

Is it possible that they are being paid (way beyond reasonable cost) for these programs ? If so, this practice is reminiscent of the use of Jamaat-e-Islami printing presses by the USIS (United States Information Service) to print material which was then burned by the USIS. If so, this would be a “legal” way to overpay for “services”.

In addition Geo TV is seriously intertwined with Indian interests with it’s promotion of Indian media programming and their business linkages with India.

Does this limit Geo TV from targeting India in it’s programs – if they fear retaliation via hostile renegotiation of business deals in the future ?

Here is a list of anchors who have practiced deceptive journalism:

Talat Hussain
Talat Hussain of AAJ TV is responsible for raising the “writ of government” issue prior to the crackdown on Lal Masjid. Every night he railed against the government for NOT acting against the militants. Soon after the operation he became the most prominent critic of the crackdown. Despite information to the contrary, he continued to sow doubt about the events that took place.

Very little attention was paid to the FATA MNAs who went to Lal Masjid to “negotiate”, but instead brayed into the megaphone that “dattay raho”.

Essentially these few media anchors were able to twist the outrage against criminals into a sympathetic portrayal of the wrong government acting against a right gun-toting militant outfit holding small children as hostages in a mosque built on illegally occupied land (takeover of a public library). The vociferousness EVERY NIGHT for weeks was a damage control exercise, designed to ensure no support develops for the crackdown against the militants, and instead to sow doubts in the minds of the people about the culpability of the criminals.

Hamid Mir
Hamid Mir’s predilection for the Taliban is well known to viewers, and his efforts to boost Baitullah Mehsud beyond his role as a criminal will be remembered.

Hamid Mir has reportedly transferred his family to London. While it is true that the journalists operate in difficult circumstances and Hamid Mir HAS done some good reporting as well, however it would not be inconceivable to see Hamid Mir leave the country if outrage develops against his actions (which led to a delay in dealing with killers of our citizens by momentarily sowing the seeds of doubt in our people’s minds).

Dr. Shahid Masood
Dr. Shahid Masood is notorious for taking things to extreme. And he has done some good reporting as well – most notably at the time of atrocities by the U.S. and Afghan forces in Afghanistan in the early days following 9/11. However Dr. Shahid Masood is also responsible for waging a psychological campaign of depressing the public with his series on TV (which was publicized as DVDs as well) on the “End of Times”. An apocalyptic vision which was designed to sow the seeds of self-doubt in the minds of the public and to paint a vision of dismal depression. What is especially odd about his series is his use of non-Islamic sources (mainly the Christian and Jewish sources) for his arguments.

Dr. Shahid Masood violated the norms of honest journalism when he published a prominent piece in the Urdu Jang newspaper (part of Geo TV) describing the “events” at the President House at the time of Musharraf’s resignation. Much was made of the wordplay and snide commentary in that article, since it was reported as an “eyewitness” observation.

Filing of false stories

It turns out this article was a complete concoction and this was revealed MONTHS later. Researching news items covering this episode, it seems Iftikhar Ahmed of “Jawabdeyh” on Geo TV had interviewed Dr. Shahid Masood after his departure as head of PTV (and prior to his rejoining Geo TV). In this interview, Iftikhar Ahmed challenges Dr. Shahid Masood about his false reporting.

It turns out Geo had CENSORED this program. Which led the (probably one of the better TV journalists) Iftikhar Ahmed to tender his resignation.

Eventually the situation seems to have resolved. I am not sure if the episode aired on TV in it’s complete form or not, but it is available on the internet (above).

Kamran Khan also aired a segment about the interview and reported that Dr. Shahid Masood could not be contacted for comment.

Now this same Dr. Shahid Masood is back on Geo TV with his own minor (and in contrast to his earlier programs, pretty boring) program.

The question is, what compels Geo TV to retain a journalist who has not only demonstrated bad judgment in his reporting, but may have reported with malafide intentions designed to create a perception in the public that is contrary to the truth.

How does Geo TV justify his continued presence on TV ? What compels Geo to impose a lying journalist on the Pakistani public ?

Dr. Shahid Masood claimed in this column in Jang (a day after Musharraf’s resignation) that he was present in the same room that Musharraf gave his resignation speech in. This again, has been proved a lie by a serving member of the President’s House staff who called in. The official visitor’s list does not include Dr. Shahid Masood’s name as he had been stopped at the reception. Additionally, Hassan Kazmi who is a senior producer of Samaa TV and was actually part of Samaa TV’s broadcast team at the venue and an eye-witness to the entire event, also confirms that Dr. Shahid Masood’s article in Jang was a bundle of lies.

LAHORE: Iftikhar Ahmed, the host of Geo TV show ‘Jawabdeh’, resigned on Sunday after the channel administration refused to air an interview with former Pakistan Television managing director Shahid Masood. The interview was recorded last week and was being advertised in the group’s The News and Jang newspapers. On Sunday, the Geo TV administration seized the original recording and declined to run it. Iftikhar Ahmed told Aaj Kal he was being pressured to censor parts of the interview but he did not compromise on principles and resigned. aaj kal report

After all the talk of the evils of “Doctrine of Necessity”, and how this “new Supreme Court” will do something new, we have the Supreme Court decision under Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry endorsing the “Doctrine of Necessity”.

Using it to justify the actions that were taken by Musharraf – except that it is chastising him for doing an extra-constitutional step (when Musharraf instituted Emergency), a step that Musharraf himself acknowledged was extra-constitutional in interviews.

PML-N politicians back in the fold after a long hiatus, go all out in their shenanigans.

First a PML-N MNA Haji Pervez sends someone else to take his educational exams.

Then PML-N Provincial Minister Chaudhry Abdul Ghafoor involved in a tussle with Customs officials at airport.

Then PML-N MPA Munawwar Gil accused of raping a lady. That “resolved” after she forgave him (shows video of him crying in a police van next to the woman). Report does not mention if he or his familiy used “pressure” to get the lady to “forgive” him.

Then a PML-N MPA (Member of Provincial Assembly) Shumaila Rana steals someone’s credit card (from a gymnasium) to buy jewelry worth Rs. 80,000. The PML-N MPA lady appears in CCTV footage obtained from the jewelry shop. Earlier the MPA had claimed that she was not involved.

If not for the (Musharraf supported) media we would not have retractions and pressure on the PML-N now to distance itself from those who are caught.

Interestingly while a lot of mention is made of Musharraf’s “farm” (which cost less than a 500 yard plot in Islamabad prior to being acquired by Musharraf), and of Musharraf buying a small house in the U.K. to aid in his lecture tours (also the Army in Rawalpindi maybe getting tired of providing him security at the Army House, since his move to his Chak Shahzad farm was a security risk).

But few mention Hamid Mir (the pro-Taliban journalist) having moved his family to the U.K. (confirm if incorrect).

And few mention Nawaz Sharif’s Raiwind property (ownership of a whole locality), or the domination of Jamaat-e-Islami in Mansoora. These isolationist carving out of territory is not healthy for Pakistan.

However there IS a problem with Musharraf’s farm – in that while he has the money (from his book sales – though some may question if he should have profited from a book while in Government service – but if it is seen as a type of Government PR effort it may fall in a grey area) then why did he accept some part of it as a “gift” from a friend.

Because while it maybe above board – it still opens up the potential for “kickback” accusations. That is, just the fact that he took something from someone means that he is indebted to them. Now, he may not have done anything special for that person, but he still opens himself up to challenge.

Basically negates everything Musharraf said about Nawaz Sharif.

So far it is Nawaz Sharif who has been seen to be lying – the misstatement about being “no deal”, and then the duration of the deal.

It is also ironic, that for all the opposition to Musharraf, Nawaz Sharif is also dependent on the legitimacy of Musharraf to still claim relief in the “Tayarra Saazish Case” (Hijacking of the PIA plane Musharraf was riding in, that was diverted on Nawaz Sharif’s orders out of Pakistani airspace into India with scant few minutes of fuel left).

That is, until the case is overturned (as many cases seem to be – thanks to his “support” of the “lawyer’s movement”), Nawaz Sharif is STILL dependent on the pardon that Musharraf accorded him (in keeping with the “deal” moved by Saudi Arabia to protect Nawaz Sharif).

Nawaz Sharif is a tainted person with obligations to foreign countries. He is heavily indebted to Saudi Arabia, and it was Saudi Arabia which insisted that “if Benazir is going to return before elections, then we can’t hold Nawaz Sharif”.

Najam Sethi – Musharraf interview – Dunya News – June 26, 2009

Complete version.

Covers relations with India (Agra), Kargil, Nawaz Sharif and meetings with “Abba Ji” (father of Nawaz Sharif and Shehbaz Sharif).

Najam Sethi is slightly cynical towards Nawaz Sharif statements. Don’t know if he is just trying to make Musharraf comfortable so he can evoke more from Musharraf.

He is also all praise for breakthrough in India (Indian acceptance of Kashmir as a problem).

But for some reason Najam Sethi comes across as a somewhat creepy person. Maybe it is this slightly-fake type behaviour which smells of that.

Interesting interview of Syed Munawwar Hassan – Ameer Jamaat-e-Islami – Sindh TV –

Interesting interview of Syed Munawwar Hassan – Ameer Jamaat-e-Islami – Sindh TV – June 16, 2009.

This is proof that the smaller TV channels ARE playing a role and just as they sometimes scoop the bigger channels with their video footage, they can also trump them sometimes in programs such as these.

Downfall of the JI

The rise of Munawwar Hassan could be aligned with the downfall of the Jamaat-e-Islami.

The assigning of a “Muhajir” leader, replacing the Pashtun Qazi Hussain Ahmed.

With the way the winds are blowing – the steady realization within Pakistan that these people are supporters of “fitna” and agents of chaos. There will be a steady decline in the JI’s fortunes.

The replacement of Qazi Hussain Ahmed (who gave the impression of a “bhola” ignorant), by Munawwar Hassan (who seems MUCH more intelligent, however has a touch of meanness in his behaviour which borders of “smart alecky” i.e. he is willing to prove a point while losing the bigger argument).

This is relevant because it will move the public perception from the “bhola pana” of the JI to the nasty aspect of the JI.

In most of his interviews, Munawwar Hassan has come across as desperate, cornered and predilected towards minor point scoring.

Also the replacement of a Pashtun by a “Muhajir” could be relevant as well. The “jahil” segments of Punjabi/NWFP public who may have followed Qazi earlier, may be less keen to defend or follow the peculiar behavioural patterns of a Karachiite leader.

The History of the JI

The JI at numerous times have been used as agents by foreign powers.

From the 1960s support of JI by the U.S. (getting stuff printed in JI printing presses and then burning it on USIS premises as a legal way to fund the JI ?) to the 1980s Soviet War in Afghanistan.

The same pattern can now be seen with the “foreign fighters” pushing their own agenda whenever they establish a base in Pakistan – an agenda that is not necessarily respectful of the peculiar history of Pakistan. Often those groups bring their simplistic ideology to Pakistan – what doesn’t work in their own countries they seek to put into action while in Pakistan. That is supported by the existece of NGOs and groups running after aid (just as other NGOs run after western aid) from Arab sources.

As the Tehreek-e-Taliban gets squeezed, they will lash out against the public as well, and in response the public will develop an even greater response to these people. The JI (and Imran Khan) are not keeping abreast of this change, and are continuing their old line.

Removal of Musharraf as whipping boy for all that ailed people

That line may have worked against Musharraf – it went well with the anti-U.S. sentiment. And even though Musharraf may have been working for Pakistani interests (while keeping U.S. pressures at bay), there was a concerted effort among those who just hated him for his guts or for what amounted to ethnic aversion (since Musharraf WAS technically a “Muhajir”, even though he used the lilt in his voice to fullest to convey a Punjabi influence !).

There is a tendency among the more incompetent segments of “intellectual” society in Pakistani to somehow sustain their status as “intellectuals” and “analysts”. For many of these Musharraf’s ability to convey ideas seriously put a damper on their own self-opinion (and the standard by which people judged good speakers and good explainers). It is possible that this RESENTMENT against Musharraf – for making many PREVIOUSLY “intellectual” people look postured and stupid/fake – may be one of the reasons many people hated his guts.

However, Musharraf is no longer around as the whipping boy for the “jahil” segment of Pakistani society.

Now they HAVE to tackle the realization that there ARE issues that transcend Musharraf.

Eventually this will sink in – and when that happens, the JI and Imran Khan will be found standing on the wrong side of the fence.

Dr. Moeed Pirzada visits Imran Khan at his home in Bani Gala in Islamabad – Dunya News – June 13, 2009.

What the interview misses out on is the contradiction in Imran Khan’s pro-health (his links to a hospital) and his “vision” and the reality of his building a house in prohibited territory in contravention of environmental principles.

Bani Gala lies right next to Rawal Dam. Numerous illegal colonies have sprung up (no doubt because the real-estate prices elsewhere are prohibitive), but they are contravening the CDA policy on residential construction next to the Lake.

Dr. Abdul Qadeer Khan was one of the early builders – whose house is right ON the lake. That building has inspired many others to “test the waters” of CDA tolerance. Thus AQ Khan’s actions acted as “targheeb” for others.

CDA for it’s part has been unable to stop this illegal activity.

And Imran Khan is part of that activity.

He is living in the catchment area (the area which contributes water to Rawal Lake – rainfall and drainage in the area will flow into the lake) for Rawal Dam.

In his own way he is contributing to the dietary intake of all those who get drinking water from Rawal Dam.

Basically anyone who is getting water from Rawal Dam is getting Eau De Imran Khan.

Excesses as inspiration for Tehreek-e-Taliban

What the Tehreek-e-Taliban do on a large scale, is done routinely in Pakistan on a smaller scale at every level.

The populating of environmentally non-approved areas for building houses is one such activity.

Essentially it is “dhownse” (i.e. bullying) towards state authority. State authorities are also complicit, as some “chacha” or “maama” is involved in the crime, so they go soft on the issue.

Result – we have mushrooming and no consistency to any policies. Those carrying out the policies lack the will to push through for fear of facing enemies, or conversely they are least bothered so they take their job without seriousness and the end result is “passing time”.

Is it any wonder that the Tehreek-e-Tailban find ready recruits from the public for action against the state ? Or that they find sympathizers in the media for their actions ?

If not to “punish” the outrageous behaviour of the privileged, it is ALSO a “me too” attitude. That if others can loot, then we should loot as well. So it is not all that altruistic either, but it definitely breeds on the misbehaviour of the well-to-do.

How weighty are Imran Khan’s pleas for action against the “powerful” in Pakistan ? When he himself partakes in activity which benefits him (good living environment), but harms a large majority of Pakistanis (those who built Rawal Dam for drinking water).

How relevant is his DEFENCE of the Taliban and Tehreek-e-Taliban and the now ineffective Jirga system and the setup in FATA (which Imran Khan is a great fan of and repeats the history of defeat of all outsiders in FATA) when these areas HAVE been defeated. Their Jirga systems have been subverted and taken over by the powerful “foreign fighters” and the money they leverage.

Tribal “lashkars” were routinely destroyed by these groups, and suicide bombings of Jirgas decimated the tribal decisionmakers. These groups (which include foreign fighters) have UNDERSTOOD the weaknesses of FATA (use religion, and spend money) and they have leveraged those advantages to devastate the area.

Structural problems in FATA – a problem waiting to happen

Imran Khan is living in the FATA of 20 years ago. Even THEN his analysis was incomplete, as it did not include the “mehmaan-nawazi for a payment” that sheltered the militants of THAT period – i.e. the car lifters and anyone who violated the laws of Pakistan who hid out in FATA to escape justice. FATA was a “free agent” for these people.

It is ironic that Imran Khan cannot see the contradiction between his criticism of the DUAL system of education (“O” levels and pakistani board of education) and his ACCEPTANCE of the DUAL systems of FATA and the rest of Pakistan.

Meanwhile Imran Khan sees NO contradiction between the openness of Pakistan to FATA residents (who can live anywhere in Pakistan), and the non-openness of FATA to the wider population of Pakistan (can you live anywhere in FATA without being bothered ?). And isn’t the FATA structure essentially a type of tribalism/feudalism ? Would it not eventually have clashed with the movement of society in other parts of Pakistan ?

In effect he is AGAINST the writ of Pakistan and Pakistanis over the whole territory of Pakistan.

In addition he wants to isolate certain groups into a separate category, separate from the environment of Pakistan. There IS some value to his argument – as a form of protecting the FATA environment as an “endangered culture”.

However we are seeing the outcome of such an indulgence – letting FATA “do whatever it wants”. Basically selling out to the highest bidder. Foreign money and fighters arrive in FATA and work against the state. This signifies a strategic weakness in the earlier structure that ALLOWS this “eating up from within” that the foreign fighters have done in FATA, so much so that when the residents of FATA DO try to evict the outsiders, they find themselves at their mercy. And assistance is required from the Army.

The FATA structure is essentially bankrupt, as it has NOT been able to defend itself against the foreign fighters (which allowed FATA to be used as a base against it’s own country).

Presently also there is indiscriminate activities
are underway. A number of housing colonies, residential areas are coming up in the Rawal
waste in water channel. With all these activities, there is no consideration of having
environmental clearance from the concerned agency.
