Pakistan, where “honour” killings are known as karo-kari, is probably the country where

Pakistan, where “honour” killings are known as karo-kari, is probably the country where such atrocities are most pervasive. Estimating the scale of the phenomenon there, as elsewhere, is made more difficult not only by the problems of data collection in predominantly rural countries, but by the extent to which community members and political authorities collaborate in covering up the atrocities. According to Yasmeen Hassan, author of The Haven Becomes Hell: A Study of Domestic Violence in Pakistan, “The concepts of women as property and honor are so deeply entrenched in the social, political and economic fabric of Pakistan that the government, for the most part, ignores the daily occurrences of women being killed and maimed by their families.” (Hassan, “The Fate of Pakistani Women.”) Frequently, women murdered in “honour” killings are recorded as having committed suicide or died in accidents.

One of the most notorious “honour” killings of recent years occurred in April 1999, when Samia Imran, a young married woman, “was shot in the office of a lawyer helping her to seek a divorce which her family could never countenance.” According to Suzanne Goldenberg,

Samia, 28, arrived at the Lahore law offices of Hina Jilani and Asma Jahangir, who are sisters, on April 6. She had engaged Jilani a few days earlier, because she wanted a divorce from her violent husband. Samia settled on a chair across the desk from the lawyer. Sultana, Samia’s mother, entered five minutes later with a male companion. Samia half-rose in greeting. The man, Habib-ur-Rhemna, grabbed Samia and put a pistol to her head. The first bullet entered near Samia’s eye and she fell. “There was no scream. There was dead silence. I don’t even think she knew what was happening,” Jilani said. The killer stood over Samia’s body, and fired again. Jilani reached for the alarm button as the gunman and Sultana left. “She never even bothered to look whether the girl was dead.”

The aftermath of the murder was equally revealing: “Members of Pakistan’s upper house demanded punishment for the two women [lawyers] and none of Pakistan’s political leaders condemned the attack. … The clergy in Peshawar want the lawyers to be put to death” for trying to help Imran. (Suzanne Goldenberg, “A Question of Honor,” The Guardian (UK), May 27, 1999.)

via Case Study: Muslim “Honour” Killings and Blood Feuds.

So some people kill a woman who was seeking a divorce from her violent husband with the help of two women lawyers, but the Pakistani MPs ask for the lawyers to be punished. Admirable justice…

Nasser Yousaf Peshawar is passing through hell. The worst of the infernal fires in this city of near

Nasser Yousaf

Peshawar is passing through hell. The worst of the infernal fires in this city of nearly two million was ignited on Oct 28 when a car bomb claimed more than 120 lives, with several unaccounted for.

A day later, with rescuers still rummaging through the debris of fallen houses, shops and a mosque, the labyrinthine alleys leading to the site of the tragedy presented a copybook spectre from the Bible, telling of the plagues that had hit the Egyptians in the times of the pharaohs.

People had locked themselves in their houses as a few, glum and shell-shocked pedestrians walked past the countless death notices hung from the electric poles and the closed shutters of the shops. Outside one of the mosques, in an alley next to the site of the blast, the stultifying air reeked of sulphur as the faithful ended their evening prayers, invoking blessings on their right and left. Quite unexpectedly, the prayer leader, an elderly man with a gray beard, offered no prayers for those killed in the blast.

Were the victims guilty or was the prayer leader wary of some invisible forces lurking in the shadows? Echoes of whispers to this effect were heard in the last rows as the stoic apathy displayed by the leader of the faithful had apparently rankled many minds. The nature of the religious war raging in our midst is indeed perplexing: it appears to have left all and sundry numb and speechless.

Soldiers stand guard at a suicide blast site in Peshawar on December 24, 2009. — AFP

Each time a blast rips through the unsteady calm of the Frontier’s metropolis, or elsewhere in the country, tongues start waging and fingers point to our east and west, in fact far beyond. Two NWFP ministers of the beleaguered ANP-led government, who made it to the tragic sites within minutes of the blasts, were seen and heard across the country pointing in vain to the enemy within. Both are roundly rebuked and branded foreign agents.

Those differing with them walk through the streets and narrow alleys of the interior city but they choose to ignore the signs and sights of the orgy of death that has engulfed us. Several deadly blasts have taken place in the one-kilometre radius area in and around the fabled Qissa Khwani Bazaar in the recent past. All impacted sites are at a stone’s throw from each other. The area is like a game reserve with teeming flocks of game birds for the gamekeepers presently engaged in ideological war games. And why shouldn’t it be?

Hate is inscribed in clear and bold fonts all across the area. Massive billboards, which in previous days were a feature of cinema houses, now hold the larger-than-life portraits of militant leaders of certain sectarian organisations. Ancient and sweet-sounding names of the streets have all been discarded and replaced with the names of those who have fallen in the sectarian warfare. Posters and graffiti proclaiming the title of infidel for the adherents of rival groups and death for the US, India and Israel adorn all walls in the area. Mosques that had jealously guarded their nameless structures for eons have been labelled in factional colours and hence declared restricted places of worship.

The only place in the vicinity that seems to have withstood the onslaught of the times is the 19th century All Saints Church. A few paces from the church is ground zero, the site of the demolished building of the Government Middle School for Girls that was hit in last December’s blast aimed at the followers of a rival religious group. All that remains of the school is a drawing pasted on a bare wall showing a camel in pencil colours with an Arab dressed in his traditional dress holding the rope. The drawing resembles a work of nostalgia, and certainly not an attempt at glorifying those who are settling scores on the soil of the wretched Pakhtuns.

A sustained campaign is still going on in the Frontier for mobilising more resistance to the voices of reason. Some self-styled hawks are even threatening to turn the entire Frontier into a cantonment against forces inimical to their definition of religion. How much more bloodshed may come about through their anger? There are others, pretending to be more pious and who are certainly less humane, who regard our present predicament as God’s way of paying back the sinning people of the Frontier.

Frontiersmen can be blamed for many peccadilloes but these do not take away from their practising their faith in its true form. Mosques in the area are overflowing with the faithful even in these struggling days when places of worship have become targets. It is quite another matter that the province has become the last refuge of the hardened sinners. None of the portrait boys on the big billboards are from the Frontier, and that says a lot for the simple Pakhtuns who have foolishly allowed themselves to be used as pawns in this ongoing senseless conflict.

The worst enemies are those who are preaching anger to the youth. They can be easily recognised as they lead the groups with divisive tags attached to a common faith. ‘Will the military triumph in Waziristan be enough to overcome the present crisis?’ was the query in a poll posted on Dawn’s online edition. Fortunately for the country only six per cent of the voters do not know the answer while a staggering 71 per cent believe it may not. The vote might be unscientific but it augurs well for a people who know that the only way the issue could be resolved is by going after the true enemies of God.

It is with a deep sense of gratitude but, sadly, mixed with an acute feeling of remorse and anguish

It is with a deep sense of gratitude but, sadly, mixed with an acute feeling of remorse and anguish that the people of Pakistan today view the 133rd birth anniversary of Quaid-i-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, and the country that he created for the Muslims of the subcontinent. With a single-minded resolve and conviction and unmatched brilliance and advocacy, he was able to bring home to the opponents of partition that Muslims were a nation apart in every sense of the word, in religion, in culture, in outlook on life, and would not countenance the dominance of the Hindu majority when the British had packed up and left India.

The people of Pakistan, while they are beholden to the Quaid for giving them an independent homeland are, at the same time, remorseful at what they – to be more exact, their leaders – have made of that priceless gift. It has been a turbulent 62 years, with rare but short spells of smooth sailing. There have been constitutional crises, inroads of bureaucracy into the political domain, and, the worst of all, periodic military coups, upsetting the democratic applecart hardly when the wares were beginning to get arranged. No more needs to be said in elaboration of these misfortunes except that the internecine bickering split up the original country into two, aided and abetted by a hostile neighbour. Pakistan, instead of marching ahead and finding a respectable place among the advanced nations of the world, as the Quaid had visualised, has regressed in aspects that provide fundamental structure of a modern Islamic democratic society.

The scenario today is scary but the fault lies with turning away from the principles that underlay the concept of the separate state. We escaped Hindu domination but find ourselves under American overlordship! If one can manage to avoid being robbed and killed in the process, suicide bombing or even the thought of it would ruin one’s dream of a peaceful and secure life. Despite a hardworking, intelligent workforce, we have failed to make use of the plentiful resources nature has endowed the country with. Highly productive projects, like Kalabagh Dam, have been abandoned at the altar of provincial narrow-mindedness. The stored waters would have virtually freed us of the worries about irrigation needs and power shortages. The concept of federation, instead of getting entrenched, remains fragile. There has been loot and plunder with gay abandon. The feudal mindset ruling the country has neglected education, the kingpin of progress and prosperity. The result: growing poverty. Things might appear hopeless, but all is not lost and the situation can be turned around in a matter of years. The need of the hour is a leadership fired with the imagination of serving the masses in a selfless manner, uplifting them from the dungeon of ignorance and indigence, bringing them in the mainstream of life and keeping the national interest supreme.

Peshawar: Bab-e-Khyber

A joint declaration by Civil Society and Anti terrorist political parties and groups was issued as “Peshawar declaration” after deliberations in a two-day conference held in Peshawar on Dec 12 and 13 2009.

1 All organizations attached with Amn Tehrik, AIRRA and political parties, i.e., ANP, PPP, PPP(S), PMAP, National Party, Awami Party Pakistan, PDC, and FRM participated in the conference.

2- It was unanimously agreed that the main and real factor behind the present chaos and instability in the region is the Strategic Depth policy of Pakistan. This is the root cause reason of terrorism in the region. Therefore, this forum strongly demands of the abolition of this policy and accountability of all architects of this policy because the policy has caused far more financial damage to Pakistan than NRO and debts waive-off put together. This policy is also responsible for killing and maiming millions of the innocent people in Pukhtunkwa and other parts of Pakistan.

3. This conference also demands in the strongest possible words that Pakistan must have to stop her policy of interference in Afghanistan and accept Afghanistan as a sovereign independent state in the region. The conference believes that this is in the interests of millions of people of Pakistan and Afghanistan.

4. There are several political parties and groups in Pakistan which do not oppose terrorism unequivocally but are directly or indirectly involved to support terrorists in Pakistan and the region. This conference declares such pro-terrorist parties are the enemies of the Pashtun nation and humanity at large.

5. The conference demands that targeted and immediate operation against all centers and networks of terrorism should be initiated and the blunders of the past should not be repeated.

6. This conference also demands the elimination of all foreign, non-local and local terrorists in FATA (Federally Administrative Tribal Area). Damages should be compensated. A comprehensive developmental package should be commenced according to the wishes and aspirations of the people of FATA.

7. All the international Aid, and grants obtained on the name of terrorism should be spent in province of Pukhtunkhwa, FATA and other affected areas.

8 Pukhtunkhwa Province should be declared as war affected and all types of taxes and utility bills be waived-off.

9-It was decided in the conference to promote people to people contacts of Afghanistan and Pakistan.

10- The conference demands a Jirga people of AF-PAK

11- This Conference fully supports the present democratic and elected government and elected President of Pakistan to fulfill their constitutional obligations including their tenure. This conference also strongly condemns the ongoing propaganda by the media and by the so called political parties and out-fits which are active to destabilize the government.

12- It was also unanimously decided by the participants of the conference to collectively evolve a mechanism to oppose terrorism which is to be announced within a few days. A committee was announced comprising Hashim Babar (ANP), Faqir Hussain PPP(S), Syed Ayub Shah (PPP), Arbab Mujeeb (PMAP), Mukhtar Bacha ( National Party), Shahab Khattak (APP) Dr. Said Alam Mehsud (PAM) M.Idrees Kamal (Amn Tehrik), Maryam BB (KK), and Professor Khadim Hussain (AIRRA).

When society is passing through a transitional period, and centuries-old social and cultural institu

When society is passing through a transitional period, and centuries-old social and cultural institutions are razed to the ground, journalists are left with no option but to cover misery, death and destruction.

From Swat to Waziristan, the area is in the grip of unprecedented violence and journalists carry the heavy burden of reporting each and every incident in great detail.

The tragedy is that the majority of the journalists reporting from the conflict zones are not trained in the techniques of conflict reporting and safety measures.

News channels are in a rush to break news. In the wake of the media boom in Pakistan, about 50 TV channels are in competition to inform the bewildered population before any other competitor takes the lead. Lost in this frenzy are the needs of journalists, more than 10 of whom have been killed in the line of duty over the past two years.

Now, as the war is reaching its climax and a major military offensive against Taliban militants is in progress in the tribal belt, Peshawar and the surrounding areas are the main targets of terrorist attacks. The city of Peshawar faced 10 bomb blasts in two weeks in November that killed hundreds of people. Many reporters and TV journalists expressed their extreme frustration and despair over the worsening situation. They complained that their newsrooms give more importance to the reports and footage they need for their bulletins than their well-being.

Recently in Peshawar, a huge bomb blast at the famous Meena Bazaar killed 120 people. A TV reporter was asked by his editor to reach the scene and provide live reports from there. The reporter performed his duties, but eventually he collapsed and had to admitted to hospital.

“I saw charred bodies, crying children, helpless mothers, blood and destruction; I was out of my mind. Even now I can’t sleep; the scenes of bloodshed torment me day and night. Sometimes I think I am not fit for this job,” said one journalist who didn’t want to be identified for fear of losing his job.

Another issue is that journalists don’t have fixed working hours; they are on call round the clock. If you cover an event the whole day it does not absolve you from the responsibility to cover any new incident in the night. “Once, I was following a story of a bomb explosion in Peshawar the whole day. I was really depressed as I was seriously concerned about my city and its people. I was continuously thinking, why is this happening to us? With this pain and sense of insecurity, I returned home. In the wee hours of the night, I received a call from my newsroom to wake up and reach a spot that had been hit by another explosion. I had to run to the spot with a heavy heart and dejected feelings. My family was very concerned as they were not sure whether I would return home,” says Tariq Afaq, a senior journalist who works for a private news channel in Peshawar.

Afaq reveals that he only recently recovered from the trauma of the ongoing violence and instability in the region. But his organisation did not extend him any support for his healthcare. He recalled that he witnessed three bomb blasts that led to signs of post-traumatic stress disorder. “Almost all the journalists are suffering from pain and trauma, but most of them don’t talk about ailments. They fear they will be considered weak and in the long run may lose their jobs. But this is a serious issue and the media organisations concerned should provide the journalists with both training facilities and psycho-social support so that they can perform their duties in a befitting manner,” he argued.

Some of the journalists told Newsline that they feel more aggressive and frustrated in the wake of the increased violence in the region. One journalist said, “These days I don’t feel easy in the company of my friends. I want to be alone. I even find it hard to feel comfortable in the company of my own family members and co-workers.

Rifatullah Orakzai, who works for the BBC in Peshawar, agrees that journalism means objectivity and impartiality, but as a local resident he is emotionally attached to the area and its people.

“A few weeks back when I saw wounded children and women in a local hospital, I lost my concentration. They were crying and wailing and there was no one to tell them why and by whom they were hurt. I was taking photographs but when I returned to my office and checked the photos all of them were out of focus. I realised that my hands were shaking while I was taking the snaps. The sense of loss and helplessness in the eyes of the injured people shocked me,” Orakzai added.

Khalid Khishgi, former secretary general of the Khyber Union of Journalists and a senior journalist working for The News in Peshawar, says, “The problem does not end there. Both the military and the militants are monitoring each and every report from the conflict zones. I cannot predict which sentence or word in my report goes against the “strategic interests” of the powerful groups. In Peshawar, so many organisations received threatening letters from a certain militant group for not giving “enough space” to their side of the story. Words like press freedom become meaningless in such horrible situations.”

This year a number of journalists were kidnapped either by the militant groups or arrested by the security agencies for not observing the specified “code of conduct” that forced other journalists to self-censor their reports to avoid retaliation. There are cases when family members compelled some of the journalists to quit their jobs or migrate to other countries.

“When your home and your family members are not safe you cannot do justice to your profession,” says Rahman Buneri, who fled the country and took asylum in the United States when a group of militants bombed his house a few months back in the Buner valley of NWFP.

Dr Khalid Mufti, a renowned psychiatrist based in Peshawar, has observed that there is a marked increase in mental health problems among journalists and their families. He is of the opinion that the war and instability is taking a heavy toll on the mental health of journalists working in NWFP and the tribal areas. “I have observed fatigue, irritation and sleeplessness among the journalists who cover violent incidents. They are extremely frightened and uncertain about their future. This attitude also leads to complications in their family affairs. In 2008, I observed 35 male and two female journalists, but in 2009, 63 male and nine female journalists consulted me for the treatment of various mental health problems. I also observed that many journalists take refuge in drugs due to the deteriorating law and order situation,” said Dr Mufti, adding that three out of 10 journalists use hashish (cannabis) and seven out of 10 are using different types of tranquilisers.

Dr Mufti maintained that in 2008 he looked after 16 families of journalists while in 2009 the number rose to 56. He elaborated that journalists’ children are the worst affected as they fear for the lives of their parents. According to his estimate, 9% of the children of journalists are suffering from serious mental and psychological complexities.

“The issue is that journalists are not provided proper training in mental health; there is no counselling, no psychotherapy. Another issue is that journalists are not paid properly. Journalists based in FATA are poor and despite performing a challenging job they have nothing to provide a decent living to their families,” he concluded.

Washington: Top US lawmakers agree that Pakistan constituted the principal challenge for US policymakers as all major terror groups, including perhaps Osama bin Laden, were in that country. John Kerry, Democratic chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, acknowledged Pakistan was at the core of US challenge in the AfPak region, as all major terror groups including the Lashkar-e-Taiba, blamed for the Mumbai terror attacks and Al Qaeda leaders, “most likely including Osama bin Laden”, are based in Pakistan… “New York or Mumbai or Peshawar”, all are threatened by extremism, said Kerry, a co-author of a bill tripling non-military aid to Pakistan to $7.5 billion over five years, at a congressional hearing. Confronting terrorism was major challenge before the world and cooperation was the key to succeed against the menace, Kerry said. “We must work together in stopping people throwing bombs and killing innocent people. That’s the world’s challenge…

Richard Lugar, the top Republican on the panel, said: “The future direction of governance in Pakistan will have consequences for non-proliferation efforts, global economic stability, our relationships with India and China and security in both the Middle East and South Asia regions.” “The potential global impact of instability in a nuclear armed Pakistan dwarfs anything that is likely to happen in Afghanistan,” he said. Underlining the need for taking the war on terror to its logical end in Pakistan, Kerry said from Haqqani network to Quetta Shura, the extremist groups do not stop at Afghan border and “so our strategy must also extend to Pakistan“.

“Al Qaeda’s leader are there, most likely including Osama bin Laden, homegrown militants like the LeT are there, and so are the men directing Taliban insurgency in Afghanistan, he said. …
