The Great Smoky Mountains National Park has over 800 miles of hiking trails and is the country’s most popular National Park.
When is the last time you experienced foot discomfort? Maybe your feet were sore from walking around

When is the last time you experienced foot discomfort? Maybe your feet were sore from walking around in an ill-fitting pair of shoes. Maybe you picked up a fungus in the shower at the gym, or maybe you stepped on a sharp object while bare-footing it around the house.

Regardless of what ails your feet, you are immediately (and probably acutely!) aware of the problem and generally address it right away.

But what about our pets? They are subject to irritation from gravel and dirt, infection from excess moisture and cuts, and discomfort from dry, cracked paw pads.

There are ways to keep your pet’s paws feeling their best. Keep your eye out for these issues and address the problems promptly if they do arise.

1. Keep your pet’s nails just above the ground when he walks and avoid trimming nails too far back (into the quick of the nail).
Ask your groomer for advice about which types of trimming tools to use between appointments if your dog’s nails grow quickly.

2. Keep hair from matting between your dog’s toes (which can be painful).
Comb out the hair regularly and trim it so that is lies even with the paws. Use a safety guard while trimming to avoid nicking your pup’s pads.

3. Maintain clean, infection-free pads.
Just as we are taught to clean behind our ears, we have to clean between our pets paw pads to remove dirt and debris including foxtails, slivers, broken glass, and pebbles. Not only can these irritants cause pain, but they can lead to infection if not treated promptly. Use a blunt-end tweezers for any lodged pieces and keep the area clean and dry.

4. Moisturize dry, cracked pads.
Aussie offers a special Paw-dicure which can alleviate the damage left by the harsh, dry air and wet ground of a Georgia winter. Our treatment is pet-safe, non-toxic, and won’t leave greasy stains on your floors and furniture the way petroleum jelly and other home remedies might.

How often do you pay attention to your pet’s feet? Does your groomer talk to you about what he does to treat your pet’s nails, paw hair, and pads? If you’d like us to rectify your pet’s pad problems, just give us a call!

“He needs to be shaved.” They’re the five words pet owners hate to hear. But as many dogs’ coats get

“He needs to be shaved.” They’re the five words pet owners hate to hear. But as many dogs’ coats get heavier in these colder months, so do their mats if their hair is not brushed out with regularity. Once those heavy mats embed themselves deep into your pet’s coat, our only option is to cut them out, or if there are too many mats, shave the dog completely. It’s important to rid your dog of mats because the thick, tangly knots of hair tug at your pet’s skin and only grow larger and more uncomfortable as time goes on.

While Aussie Pet Mobile prides itself on being where you want us when you need us, we understand that it’s not always feasible to call in the groomer while your pet’s hair is growing out between trims. That’s why I’d like to offer you some tips on how to keep your pet looking and feeling his best between appointments and show you how to avoid hearing those five words so many pet owners dread.

The number one thing you can do for your dog is to brush him on a regular basis. Take that half hour during an evening television show and brush your dog from head to toe a few times per week. Not only will it help prevent your dog’s coat from developing mats, but your dog will enjoy the attention. And studies show that spending direct time with your pet has calming and healthy effects on humans, too!

When brushing your pet, it is important to select the proper brush. Ask your Aussie Pet Groomer for recommendations based on your pet’s specific coat. Brushes vary in bristle length, size, and texture so some may not be long enough to brush through a heavy coat while others may be too wiry or sharp for a dog with short hair or a light coat.

Also, please pay particular attention to your pet’s belly, joints under his arms and legs, and the area around his ears when brushing him. This is where we generally see the most matting because it is where the most rubbing occurs and also the spots that most frequently escape brushing.

As always, we’re here when you need us and happy to share professional tips to keep your dog looking and feeling his best.

Have you noticed your dog’s hair becoming thicker in the colder months? How often do you brush your pet?

Until next time, I’m Eric Pai, owner of Aussie Pet Mobile servicing the Kennesaw, Acworth, Canton, Woodstock, Cartersville, Marietta, Holly Springs, and Mountain Park, Georgia area, and I welcome your comments and questions.

“Yes! I finally get to sleep in the bed! It’s too bad you don’t realize I am still bringing in fleas

“Yes! I finally get to sleep in the bed! It’s too bad you don’t realize I am still bringing in fleas and ticks. I guess you’ll figure it out sooner or later, but in the meantime I’m going to ride the wave and enjoy this electric blanket.”—Your Loving Pet

We at Aussie Pet Mobile enjoy being a part of your family’s pet care. With the hustle and bustle of the holidays and the colder weather upon us, it is easy to forget to follow up with flea and tick treatments, or even realize that our pets can still attract fleas and ticks in a time of year most of us consider parasitic insects dormant in Georgia.

Our groomers are happy to professionally apply your Frontline® or other prescription flea and tick medication after your pet’s groom, or provide you with a natural flea and tick application we have onboard our Aussie Pet Mobiles.

Of course people are surprised when we tell them this, especially this time of year. The two most common misconceptions we hear in the wintertime are that people believe fleas and ticks are dormant when it’s cold, and that people shouldn’t bathe pets until just before their next topical flea and tick application.

I can understand why many pet owners fear they might wash off the application or render it partially or completely ineffective with a bath. It seems logical that you would not want to rinse off a topical treatment. However, most treatments are designed to withstand bathing without compromising their efficacy. I always recommend people check for the specifics on their pet’s medication, but a product many of our customers use, Frontline®, has this to say about bathing pets after its application:

“FRONTLINE Brand Products remain effective for 30 days, even if a pet swims or is bathed. After application, keep the dog or cat from getting wet until the application area appears dry, usually 24 hours.”

Knowing this, there is only one day per month when it is not a good idea to have your pet bathed, and that’s the day after his or her flea and tick preventative treatment.

We want to partner with you to always provide the best service and care for your pets, keeping them healthy, clean, and beautiful. We do this by offering educational tips on your pet’s grooming and taking care and pride in our service to your family.

Until next time~Have a safe and Happy New Year and please remember to defend your pet against fleas and ticks this winter.

Congratulations! Today was the day that everything fell into place. The stars lined up for you and s

Congratulations! Today was the day that everything fell into place. The stars lined up for you and so you finally felt great about yourself!! You know what I am talking about. You noticed in your calendar today was the day to apply Frontline to your four legged friend, so you lured him/her over to you with a handful of treats, parted his/her fur and applied Frontline directly on their skin. Yes, you are feeling good!!! You applied the treatment just like the directions said and can’t wait to do it again next month. Plus it only took 10 minutes out of your day and now he/she is outside frolicking in the yard and playing with the kids. Thus you can move onto your next project…what a great day this is going to be.

That is, until an hour later, when your four legged friend shows up at the back door covered in mud, leaves and grass. He/she looks like a walking compost pile, you think to yourself, as you grab your camera and start taking a couple of photos to share with your friends. These are great shots!

Then it dawns on you that only an hour or so ago you put Frontline on your pet. Now apprehension is closing in as you remember something in the instructions about not washing your pooch for 48 hours? What to do, what to do, what to do? Should you bathe him/her and reapply Frontline or does your four legged friend have to spend the next 48 hours outside barking at the neighbors? Or should you buy a flea and tick shampoo and just wash the dog with that?

To answer that question, you should know a little about Frontline. The main ingredient in Frontline, fipronil, stores itself in the dog’s oil glands, reapplying itself constantly through the hair follicles. Though the manufacturer claims their product is waterproof, some dog owners have found that the treatments do seem less effective after bathing.

Notice I said less effective, not ineffective. So before you decide to use the flea and tick shampoo on your dog’s skin, keep on reading. Do you really want to add more chemicals to your dog’s skin in addition to what you just applied? How long have you been using Frontline? Does your dog currently have fleas and ticks? Is he or she going to bark all night if they are not sleeping in bed with you?

First things first. Make sure your pooch has plenty of water outside and can lay in a place with shade. Even though he/she is muddy and wet they still need water. Second, give Aussie Pet Mobile a call and we will come out to address the situation.
Usually, when a situation like this happens, we wash the dog in an Yucca Shampoo which is designed to help moisturize their skin while cleaning their coat. Then we recommend a couple of alternatives if you discover fleas such as:

Garlic and brewer’s yeast tablets. The scent is secreted through the skin and keeps bugs away. It is not as bad as it sounds and can be used at anytime in conjunction with Frontline.

Use essential oils. Be careful. Some oils can cause irritation when applied directly to your dog’s skin. Instead, add a few drops to your pets collar or dilute it in water and spray a few squirts on their coat. Cedar, lavender, citronella and rosemary are great for this.

Another option is a homeopathic treatment called Capstar. Capstar is a tablet you can give to your pet. This stuff works fast. Normally with in 30 minutes to an hour you can actually see fleas fall off your cat or dog. Capstar is safe for pets that are 4 weeks of age and older and over 2 pounds of body weight.

Lastly, you can use a natural Yucca based shampoo to wash your pet. It uses yucca’s super water softening ability to penetrate the shells of fleas and ticks causing their natural, instant and safe elimination.

At Aussie Pet Mobile we use Yucca shampoos or a Neem based shampoo for pets with really bad fleas. Neem based shampoos are actually recommended by the department of agriculture for the treatment of flea infested pets.

I hope you enjoyed this post and I look forward to hearing from you. If I can ever be of help to you or your pet, give us a call. Aussie Pet Mobile Alpharetta
