For the past week my sleeping pattern has been really weird. I’ve held out on blogging a bit just to see if it keeps up, and it has for the most part.

It started Wednesday evening. I got home from school later than usual, I can’t for the life of me remember why I was so late. I believe I went to Second Cup with a friend, as mentioned in a previous blog. Right.

Actually, this has to do with the nap mentioned in that same blog. This one.

The only reason I now remember what I did that day is because of that blog. Thanks, past me.

Anyway. As stated, was falling asleep on the floor, got up went to bed, woke up, light were off- i didn’t turn them off!!- thought I was in outerspace.

So we get that I was really disoriented.

When I went back to sleep that night I slept well, until I woke up 7am the next day.
On Thursdays I don’t have to get up until 12:30 at the latest to catch the bus I need to get to school on time.

I woke up 7 when my roommate was getting ready, and then woke up every single hour after that, checked the time with full clarity, and then went back to sleep for another hour.  This is really really unlike me. I mean, yeah I can wake up often but I won’t be so aware of checking the time, nor will I fall asleep so quickly.

Thursday night I went to go to sleep at 2am which is kind of normal- only as soon as the light turned off I was wide awake. Not only that, my roommate’s toilet was running, and I could hear the water trickling into it through my wall, so I was uber irritated.

I got less than three hours of sleep thursday night.

Friday night I fully intended on napping the second I got home, but that didn’t happen. Instead, I went out with friends for food then visited another sick friend. Upon arriving home I watched some Fushigi Yuugi and read a bit and then went to sleep at 2ish.

That was all fine and normal, except that I didn’t wake up until 2:30pm.

And, I was so heavy from sleep I’d pressed into my bed so hard that I made my eyebrow piercing bleed a little.

No matter how late I go to sleep I usually wake up around 11 or 12 and think ok I should get up. I woke up at 9 to my roommates talking and fell back asleep easily, didn’t wake up again until 2:30.

Last night and today has been the worse by far for sleeping.

My best friend got a kitten last night and he’s only 6 weeks old, so requires a lot of supervision. Somehow her boyfriend and I stayed up until 4:30am watching the junglebook and looking up weird animals and bugs, and I didn’t feel tired at all. I can’t stay awake past 3 lately.

So we all climbed into bed and fell asleep okay, except I woke up 6:30 when my cell phone alarm went off because I am an idiot and forgot to turn it off. I got up, turned that off, went back to bed and realised I could hear all the sleep noises they were making, so I moved out to the couch.

I checked on Pete (the kitten) before climbing onto that wonderfully soft couch to go back to sleep, and as soon as I shut the door the little guy woke up and began crying his cute little head off.

I stayed up for an hour watching a kitten poop, pee, and toddle around a bathroom until he tuckered himself out and went to sleep.

So I went to sleep 7:30, when my friends brother was up and watching Dr. Who upstairs.

2 hours later I heard the brother and the mother talking about how they had to get his hockey bag from the room the kitten was in, so I got up in the middle of the best REM of my life and picked up the cat while he got what he needed. Of course Pete wanted to play again and I was in no mood so I brought him in to the friend and the boyfriend and said ‘SOMEONE PLAY WITH THIS I AM TOO TIRED.’

So they did.

They also put him back when they thought he’d fallen asleep but he started meowing so I called to the boyfriend to take care of him again.

At some point, I have no idea what time it was, they left to go get some toys for the cat. All I can remember is ignoring his sad little meows, and then my friends were walking by me again.

Then my friends Dad was yelling at me to get some breakfast, so at 12:30 I got up and ate.

My friend and I took a nap while the boyfriend played with Pete, and I think we were out for about 2 hours. All I know was that was the best sleep I had all day. I woke up and groggily went upstairs to watch Iron Chef with them.

Now here I am, writing about this. Why?

My sleep this week has been weird, yes. But what makes it feel weirder is that it feels like it’s being controlled by something else. I’ve never had this feeling before. When I woke up from the nap and the lights were off, I felt like something was making me forget being awake, and was trying to keep me in bed. I think that’s why I had that floating feeling, like I was in space or underwater.

When I woke up every hour the next day, it literally felt like my head was being pulled up to look at the time and then let go to go back to sleep. I can’t explain it, but it was the weirdest feeling.

My sleep thursday night was tortured because of the dreams I was having and my inability to stay asleep.

On Saturday, waking up felt like I was being pushed into the bed by something quite strong, and my sleep this morning just sucked all around.

I know it’s strange to hear this, but it does feel like my sleep is being controlled by someone who’s not me. And sure, it sounds dumb or weird or crazy, but these past few days have been the strangest sleeps of my life.

I guess I’ll see what tonight holds, since I need to get up in about 6 hours.

I suppose I’ll read something to help me fall asleep, hopefully I sleep well.

Heavy makes me happy!

Weather is very windy but otherwise nice. Rain in the area this morning but I saw none. When I looked to the east, it was so very cloudy and stormy looking. But looking to the west it was clear. And half and half to the south.

I took a road trip to Great Bend KS. My best friend Pete lives there with his 2 dogs. His mom is in an assisted living home there. I spent the day with both of them.  Nice to get away and to see them. We ate at the home. Eaten there many times and it has always been great food. But. OMG. Today just plain sucked. Hamburger patty on one half slice of wheat bread with gravy over it and peas. Well. The hamburger was half gristle. The gravy was not quite white but not really brown. Peas would good. It was someone’s birthday so we had a fabulous cake from Dillons.

On the way to Great Bend a house pulled in front of me. A HOUSE. It was as wide as the entire road. NO WAY to pass. I was stuck behind it going very slow for several miles. Finally got to a small town and the driver pulled over and we could pass.

When I am stressed, my palms start to itch and sometimes a couple of fingers. My one palm is now almost unbearable. If I do not leave it alone, it will then become an open sore. Yes, life it good. And it will only get worse and worse.

Forgot to mention this, but yesterday was Kajsa-Jo’s second birthday. How glad we area to have her. Here is a baby photo of her.

JLo falls onstage...then pops up and keeps it moving

Last night,Dick Clark and ABC television hosted the annual American Music Awards, where all kind of crazy and cool happenings went on,and Lady Gaga and Adam Lambert still stood out.

I like it how every year some new act feels the need to shock and push the limits of the public morals to the breaking point, and this year the winner for that category is Adam Lambert.

Adam,the runner-up for last seasons American Idol competition,decided to out do Katy Perry who kissed a girl, or at least had a hit record about it, by kissing a guy on stage.

And, as if that was not enough to get his point across, he then grabbed a male dancer, and had him kiss,…or do something like that, to his crotch. Many guys have done this on stage before,except with women.

I think the best one was that awards show on Spike TV hosted by Jamie Foxx,when he grabbed Halle Berry’s nice behind and laid a good kiss on her…remember that.

…Oh yeah…as usual,like clockwork…Lady Gaga got down!…she is the most interesting performer out there currently, and whenever she performs…I simply can not take my eyes off of her,because of her performances.

She has way more concept than the rest of her fellow performers,and I can tell she is having a big influence on others stage shows. Good going Gaga….

Stevie V and I have been spending some time getting to know Liverpool Street Station while TDog and Coggles sleep off a night of debauchery.

We’ve made friends with a few pidgeons and very much enjoyed the lady dressed up as a Victorian shepherd.

The M&S gets approval. But my question is can you eat the cold beef and onion slices?

The Preservation Hall is a 48-year-old French Quarter mainstay known for its deep New Orleans jazz legacy. In honor of the venue and its music outreach program, an impressive group of artists recorded tracks with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band for a benefit album called Preservation (what an original title!), due February 16 via RED.

Performers on the record include Tom Waits (who does a version of the Mardi Gras song “Tootie Ma Is a Big Fine Thing”), Andrew Bird, Jim James of My Morning Jacket, Pete Seeger, Dr. John, Steve Earle, Blind Boys of Alabama, Merle Haggard, Richie Havens, Jason Isbell, and more.

I did not see what was going on when I walked by these characters and shot his photo from the hip. When I looked later I realized he was adding a little zip. So that later on while playing he could sneak a little nip. I had such a good time on my Mexico trip.

Guanajuato

I shot this with my Ricoh standing on the square in the center of Guanajuato, watching people walking around and around, shooting from the hip waiting to see if anything would happen under the cool trees where the sunlight was bouncing up off of the pavement.

Looking at the current music industry, I find it interesting how a lot of the biggest stars have attached themselves to one another.  Beyoncé and Jay-Z are considered the golden couple of R&B / hip-hop, and although they are both megastars and extremely talented in their own right (and have lots of independent ventures, and carved out their own careers independently before getting together), it’s the fact that they are together which makes them seem almost invincible.  When you listen to some of Beyoncé’s love songs, you can imagine her singing about Jay-Z; when she has a song like “Diva” which exudes confidence in a hip-hop style, you assume that Jay-Z had something to do with that attitude.  Even if it’s not the case.  Likewise, on Robin Thicke’s new song “Meiplé”, Jay-Z raps about Beyoncé being the “black Brigitte Bardot”.

Running with the Beyoncé example, she teams up with artists such as Shakira and Lady Gaga (whoever’s hot, basically) to cement her status as one of music’s elite.  Just like Timbaland and Justin Timberlake, or Timbaland and Nelly Furtado.  Relationships-wise, remember the furore over Britney Spears and Justin back in the day?  Their relationship elevated them to supernova-level megastardom, and was a massive element in their fame and success.  Interestingly, when they broke up, things just weren’t the same.  I think as members of the public, we like a couple who are balanced musically and seem to fit each other personally – it seems like fairytales can happen.  And when they self-destruct and we’re forced to admit that the fairytale was something created by the public and the media that the celebrities could never live up to, it’s just not the same.  I’m sure that there are some people who would attribute Britney’s entire marriage to Kevin Federline and her subsequent meltdown to the fact that her and Justin broke up, regardless of the reasons behind that breakup or the other factors in Britney’s life that added to her downward spiral (and subsequent resurgence).  I think that the same is happening with Rihanna and Chris Brown at the moment – however good their music / dancing / fashion might be, the fact that they were part of a couple – however much they would deny it to the paparazzi – made them seem that little bit more gilded in superstardom.  Now that they’ve split up, regardless of who beat who, they’re both experiencing some backlash (despite the fact that in both cases, their new material is certainly up to par, if not better, than their previous work).  What’s up with that?

I was thinking about this not because I ruminate daily on Beyoncé and Rihanna’s love lives, but because the same kind of thing has happened at uni.  Consciously or not, several of us within our course have paired off – not in a romantic sense, but just attached ourselves to one best friend.  There’s Pete and Emma, Penny and Daisy, Julie and Clare, among others – and of course me and Mike.  Talking about Mike and me, we’re the unofficial ‘leaders’ of our group – everyone seems to look to us whenever we speak in class, whenever someone needs to volunteer to do something in the group, organising social events.  I dread to think what would have happened if one of us didn’t smoke – we wouldn’t have had the chance to gel so instantly (on the first morning, Mike came up to me and said “Do you smoke?” “Yes.” “I thought it was you outside.  THANK GOD.  I smoke too!” and that was it!).  But I still think that because of the people we are, we would have found each other before too long.  It’s interesting how we seem to attract others around us, be they members of the aforementioned pairs, or others.  At first, there was a pair of the two youngest girls, Jenny and Sian, but as time’s gone on, Jenny has started to explore life on the dark side (i.e. she’s hanging out with me, Mike and Vikki) and loosened up to have some fun.  There’s a sense of charisma and magnetism that pairs who get on well exude without even much effort.  I wonder if those in our group who don’t come out for social drinks, who turn up to uni alone and go home alone, are enjoying it quite as much?  I know that the point of the course is not to have fun and socialise, but I like to work hard and play hard, and I think it’s a good balance for getting the most from this experience.

The funny thing was one night recently when Mike couldn’t come out.  I was still the social ringleader, but I did have a couple of comments such as “So what is Mike doing tonight?”  ”How is Mike?” “You won’t smoke as much tonight since your smoking partner isn’t here.”  Me and Mike texted during the evening (he was sad he couldn’t be there, I was updating him on the scandal and gossip as the night progressed), but I thought it was interesting how people still kinda saw me as the ringleader, but thought that he and me were inseparable to the point of knowing each other’s business inside out.  I told Mike about it on Sunday when I saw him, and we laughed at the fact people seem to have the conception that we cannot exist without one another (I’ve heard one person say “Mike loves you, he follows you everywhere!” when I don’t see it as following, I just see it as a natural gravitation towards one another) – last time I checked, I managed 23.8 years of my life without Mike, and he managed even more without me.

Once you become a part of a “power couple” in whatever sense, does that make you inferior when you act on your own?  As much as I enjoy being part of the “Mike & I” leadership party, I’m still my own person.  Me and Mike have a lot in common, but we’re different in a lot of ways too, and I don’t need him to function.  And vice versa!  I think that having a companion or partner in crime makes you feel stronger, bolder and more confident, but it doesn’t mean that without the other person, you’re nothing.  I wonder what Jay-Z thinks about his position in hip-hop’s elite, and whether this position would be compromised were he to divorce Beyoncé tomorrow.  Sometimes a friendship or relationship brings along with it a certain amount of social bank or clout, but that’s not the sole reason why we should be friends with anyone – we just gel with people and connect from there.  Because at the end of the day, people may see a certain facet of us in the public eye – whether we’re celebrities or just day-to-day people – but behind closed doors or in the privacy of our own relationship, we have that connection for reasons people don’t understand unless they’re willing to plumb the depths below the surface.
