Peter Bjorn & John + Local Natives - Maroquinerie – 15 octobre 2009

Au départ, rien n’était prévu, et puis on reçoit un sms de PA, et hop deux places récupérées pour voir Peter Bjorn & John à la maro!

Ca fait un certain temps que l’on n’y a pas mis les pieds, notre soirée préférée là bas, c’est l’inrock indie, et honnêtement l’augmentation des prix associée à des affiches pas forcément méga bandantes, explique notre relatif détournement ces derniers temps! A leur décharge, c’est aussi la scène indie qui a changé, et pas forcément dans le sens que j’aurais souhaité, mais bon, revenons en à notre sujet!

On a raté exLovers, à regret, car signé sur un label super cool (chess club). Sont présents au concert quelques sov-iens (dont PA), premier groupe que l’on voit: Local Natives, au début j’aurais pensé que c’était pas moi (genre indie mou du genou pour lecteur de pitchfork) mais je me suis laissé prendre, et j’ai pas mal accroché avec leurs chansons, une belle surprise, alors que je m’attendais à pas grand chose!

La suite, c’est évidemment LE groupe attendu ce soir là, les suédois de Peter Bjorn & John. Le trio démarre sur deux trois morceaux que le public semble connaître et apprécier, moi je trouve ça juste super nul… je me demande ce que je fous là! Mais bon, je résiste à la tentation de me casser dehors, et le miracle se produit, le groupe mute en autre chose, une sorte de formation power pop pas dégueu du tout, et même assez cool, du coup je suis tout de suite plus à fond (mais pas le public héhé). La suite alternera entre ces deux etrêmes, mais globalement c’était pas mal (même plutôt bon), moins mal que ne le laissait penser les deux premiers titres, et puis “young folks” est quand même un super single! Le morceau juste avant le rappel est vraiment classe – ils auraient du s’en tenir là, la suite étant un peu superflue, mais bon au final, j’ai plutôt apprécié!

Ensuite on a un peu trainé dans la rue, et on a croisé les exLovers qui semblent-ils étaient recherchés par quelques demoiselles, pas sûr que ça ait fini en quoi que ce soit d’un peu sexuel ceci dit, enfin j’y étais pas donc…

09:15h. Me despierto y sin lavarme la cara enciendo el ordenador para leer las noticias. Todas las noticias: El País, El Mundo, Público, La Razón, ABC, El Periódico, La Vanguardia y Noticias Cuatro.

10:15h. Preparo el desayuno porque hoy tampoco va a venir nadie a hacérmelo: zumo de lima y naranja y lo que he bautizado como un Crunchy Melon: trozos de melón con cereales tipo Corn Flakes, un yogur y trozos de chocolate amargo. Suena Lay it down de Peter Bjorn & John.

11:15h. Releo una noticia de La Razón sobre los jefes. Como no tengo no puedo opinar, pero ay si me retrollevara… Aquí está la noticia. Suena We walk de The Ting Tings.

12:15h. Estoy llegando a Praia do Amor, parece que está la marea baja. Pensando en las tiendas de souvenirs que he visto por el camino, decido que no voy a comprar nada a nadie, no quiero tener que comprar otra maleta y repetir la experiencia china. Lo siento por vosotros.

13:15h. En Praia do Amor, a la sombra de una sombrilla naranja, leyendo a Mishima. Yuchan y Nobutaka se acaban de encontrar en la fiesta de Jacky. Me da en la nariz que Yuchan se va a meter en problemas.

14:15h. Espero a que traigan mi comida, un espeto (brocheta) de picanha y macaxeira frita. Una pareja está jugando a palas y yo, harto de oír el ping pong, tengo ganas de meterle a cada uno el mango de su raquetita por la oreja derecha y que prueben a jugar así. Sería más divertido sin duda. Pasa un vendedor de pulseras con la cara de Hannibal Lecter, bozal incluído, tatuado en medio del pecho. Qué miedo.

15:15h. Sigo en la playa. Fumo un cigarro después de comer. Me fotografío un pie.

16:15h. Estoy meando, pensando en mi siguiente paso que es tirarme a la piscina. Suena el pedazo de canción (9 minutos) Warm in the shadows de Music go music.

17:15h. Borro canciones de mi discoteca. Ni yo me creo que tenga 4000 canciones favoritas. Tengo que dejarlo por lo menos en 3.000. La última borrada, una de Santiago y Luis Auserón que nunca debí comprar. La última salvada, Verano de La Buena Vida.

18:15h. Repaso la prensa por segunda vez, de una forma menos exhaustiva pero atento al blog de Gabilondo. Espanto una mosca. Suena Fascination de Proper filthy naughty.

19:15h. Tomo una caipirinha mirando al mar en plan Jorge Sepúlveda pero sin llorar. Me ilumina una palmera que da luz y cocos. Suena puto rigui. Decido no volver a este sitio donde sólo quitan el rigui para poner U2, que deberían pensar en su jubilación. Y Madonna también.

20:15h. Asesino con grandes dosis de Raid y ensañamiento a un saltamontes que está interesado en mi cena, un sandwich de Polenghi (pal caso, Philadelphia) y salami. Suena Tormenta de arena de Dorian, un himno.

21:15h. Consulto las estadísticas del blog y veo, satisfecho, que están subiendo las visitas. Suena Sexual Revolution de La casa azul. Un día dije, y a partir de ese día lo repetí hasta la saciedad, que la vida no tiene sentido sin Guille Milkyway. No es para tanto, pero qué haría yo sin él. Ahora que acabo de escribir suena La gata bajo la lluvia, de Rocío Dúrcal. Qué grande. Y qué muerta. Como el saltamontes. Hasta mañana.

Hace unos meses no se me salía de la cabeza una rola, que calificaría de electropop, llamada Animal. Ese ritmo, esa sinceridad lírica, y un corito tan sticky me tenían encantada. La creación se la debía a unos suecos conocidos como Miike Snow. Muchas de sus canciones están disponibles como descargas gratuitas en http://rcrdlbl.com . Y fue así como di con la fabulosa rola que les recomiendo el día de hoy.

La canción lleva por título It Don’t Move Me (tercer single del Living Thing (2009)), y es original de los también suecos Peter Bjorn And John. Si bien el track es bueno por sí mismo, el remix que hizo Miike Snow le da un giro que la ha mantenido entre las canciones reproducidas con mayor frecuencia en mi iPod. Por cierto, el trío se presentará el próximo 9 de octubre en Covadonga (Puebla 121, Col. Roma), así que si van, ahí nos vemos. On the one hand there will be the art school types who appreciate the low budget attempt at leaving things simple, letting the song speak for itself. Then there will be the heads who say it’s garbage, possibly even a reckless choice for a video. A video lacking any real artistic or entertainment value. Anybody who knows me beyond acquaintance level will probably know that I love Belle and Sebastian more than I love Sailor Jerry’s. Friday sees the return of Kissing Just For Practice to the lovely* Star and Garter; they play B&S every few songs, and I will probably be there for a dance.

Belle and Sebastian are often cited as being one of the bands that started the indiepop movement (please feel free to correct me), so a night dedicated to their songs and the general genre seems like a very good idea indeed. Anyway, here’s five more songs, with an indiepoppy flavour.

Five Songs for Twee Times

1. Lazy Line Painter Jane – Belle and Sebastian: When I’m wandering around town with my iPod on, I like to listen to this song. It makes me feel like I’m in a French film, but that might just be me being a bit gay. Anyway, to me it just sounds really big and cinematic, and it’s perfect to dance to. In fact, it almost sounds like Motown, thanks to the glorious organ and drum sounds. And if you’ve been reading closely enough, you should know by now how much of a massive fan I am of warbly girl vocals, especially when they come with a side helping of Stuart Murdoch. An anthem for girls who want to feel like Amélie Poulain, but are a little bit more on the slutty side.

2. French Navy – Camera Obscura: Another ’60s-pop tinged gem; any song that contains the couplet ‘You make me go ooooh/With the thing that you do‘ is a winner in the book of Arrowsmith. This song is so amazingly twee that it makes your teeth hurt a bit, but in a very good way. Basically, another girl voice, another catchy hook and a singalong chorus, teamed with hipshaky vibes. Fantastic.

3. Too Young – Phoenix: So this year was the year that everyone finally juiced over Pheonix, thanks to Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix. I’m not denying that it’s a good album, but people might do better to delve into their back catalogue. ‘Too Young’ is in my top 10 songs of all time. I love the fact that some of the lyrics sound like they’re trying to sound American, for example ‘I knew my time was coming and it took me like ages/Just to understand that I was afraid to be a simple guy…’. I love the synths. I love the refrain. I love EVERYTHING about this song. Dance to it with me?

4. You! Me! Dancing! – Los Campesinos!: Aaah, I love Los Campesinos! They make me so happy. This is their quintessential party tune, about party time, and basically makes me do sweaty dancing like no other song on the planet. And it has glockenspiel! This song will always scream March 2007 to me, when I got into what used to be The Late Rooms (I think?) underage, got very drunk, and joyously sand along to every word of this song whilst pulling some pretty hideous moves. It was a good time for me. (Incidentally, LC!’s new album, ‘These Are Listed Buildings’, looks set to be a corker.)

5. Young Folks – Peter Bjorn & John: Nothing says ‘twee’ more than a touch of Swedishness. I love this song because of the pure romanticism of it; the way Victoria Bergsman’s voice sounds so croaky and broken, the way both singers seem to be pleading with each other for no reason, the fact that it’s about over-cautiousness at the start of a relationship. Teamed with the bongos and all that stuff, it’s pure pop gold.

Another five squeezed out. In other news, my ears are still hurting after seeing Times New Viking last night, the freshers in Manchester are ruining my life, and I need a haircut. All these however, are stories which I may explain in greater detail some other time.

*Unless you are my best friend Lara, in which case you think the Star and Garter is a shithole. kthx.

I’ve pretty much been a fan of Miike Snow since I was first introduced to their music back in March. They’ve got a great, original sound that plays well on it’s own or remixed. Anna over at Your Army was kind enough to send over the new Savage Skulls remix of Miike’s “Black & Blue”, a track off their freshman album, Miike Snow. Keep an eye on those Savage Skulls, damn. Also, damn it, Miike’s going to be at The Empty Bottle on September 25th and it’s motha-fuckin’ sold out. Someone do a live broadcast of that for me, thanks.

Sångaren från Shout Out Louds Adam Olenius och Peter Morén från bland annat Peter Bjorn & John och The Plan, Daniel Värjö från The Concretes samt Niklas Korssell från bland annat The Plan har tillsammans i denna härliga uppsättning ett band vid namn Tutankamon. Album släpps enligt Playground Music den 5 oktober men det finns redan nu ett smakprov på deras MySpace (TUTANKAMON); Have you ever been in love.
