My favorite Hong Kong movie is Comrades, Almost A Love Story.
It stars Maggie Cheung and Leon Lai.

This is my favorite part of the movie where a Teresa Teng song is being played over.
For those who haven’t seen the movie, I won’t spoil it.

The story follows 3 blood brothers in the middle of a war. Based on a Qing Dynasty story, The Assass

The story follows 3 blood brothers in the middle of a war. Based on a Qing Dynasty story, The Assassination of Ma.

Directed by – Peter Chan, Wai Man Yip

Written by – Tin Nam Chun, Junli Guo, Jiping He, Jianxin Huang, Jo Jo Yuet-chun Hui, Oi Wah Lam, Lan Xu, James Yuen

Starring – Jet Li, Andy Lau, Takeshi Kaneshiro, Jinglei Xu, Bao-ming Gu, Xiaodong Guo, Zhagqi Shi, Kuirong Wang, Yachao Wang, Bo Zhou

Now this type of film isn’t one I would normally pick to watch even though I’ve seen quite a few of them. I did really like it though. It’s got a great story and amazing action sequences. Huge armies battling to the death, cannons firing, arrows flying and plenty of limbs being chopped off here and there.

Of course you’re treated to great performances from the three lead actors and there’s lots of emotional sub-plots to keep the movie from just being one battle after another. Jet Li is the catylyst for the three blood brothers to join the army in an effort to protect their village and end the war. At first his idea is for a greater good but winning slowly breaks down his attempts to remain morally good. Andy Lau and Takeshi Kaneshiro play the remaining brothers who begin to wonder if all of this is worth it.

Each brother begins to have his own idea of what is right or wrong until they ultimately butt heads over what to do. The ending was powerful and it really builds into a beautiful story. There’s lots going on in this one and plenty of seperate plots that blend together wonderfully. The battle scenes are well done and look amazing. To me, this is always the strong points of the ‘epic history’ war flicks, how great it looks with hundreds or thousands of soldiers engaged in battle. It always impresses me that such an enormous event can be put together for a film.

If you enjoy this type of flick then you’ll love it and should check it out.

The vicious cycle that vengeance breeds animated in starkly beautiful black calligraphy ink strokes.

Sadly, I missed this one. So, yeah, I can’t really give you much insight into it. I guess I’ve gotta get into the theater faster from now on!

A Mainland director Nie Wen (Jacky Cheung) decides to make a film musical starring his Mainland girlfriend Sun Na (Zhou Xun) and Hong Kong actor Lin Jian-dong (Takeshi Kaneshiro). Unknown to him, Sun has met Lin before ten years ago when she was a cabaret singer in Beijing. The two had a relationship together then, when Lin was a film student. Ten years later, now a huge movie star, she refuses to acknowledge they have met before.

Nie envisages the materials to the musical, which include a plot where a girl loses her memory and comes to live with a circus troupe. Sun plays the amnesiac girl and Lin her boyfriend who tries to bring back her memories. As the shooting of the movie starts, reel life and real life begin to overlap and merge. Lin tries desperately to win back the lost love of Sun, while Nie discovers their past romance and that it has rekindled. Nie himself plays the role of the obsessive circus owner in the musical who is involved in a love triangle. Just like in real life, he has Lin as his rival.

Ji Jin-Hee plays Monty, a character who plays a number of different roles in the movie (such as a noodle shop owner and a reporter).-wiki

The film reportedly cost US$10 million, and it earned US$2.2 million in its opening weekend.-wiki

The film is often compared to Moulin Rouge!, as it prominently features the device of a story within a story, which depicts a real-life love triangle between the actors themselves. Unlike Moulin Rouge! however, the musical numbers are limited to the inner show.

In an interview with the Malaysian newspaper The Star, director Peter Chan stressed that “Perhaps Love is a love story, not a musical. It’s not even being promoted as a musical. It’s not a musical in the conventional sense. My characters don’t break out into song. Initially, it was a challenge to balance the over-the-top element in musicals and the subtleties of a movie. In the end, the method I used to overcome that was to make a movie-within-a-movie.” The interview appeared in the November 25, 2005 edition of The Star, as Peter Chan was in Kuala Lumpur to promote his film.-wiki

Perhaps Love was filmed in Beijing and Shanghai. The film is the first musical to be produced in mainland China in over forty years.

And here is the final 9 films announced for the 2009 Toronto After Dark Film Festival, finally. I was a little more excited about the first 8 films but I’m placing all that on 3 factors, Vampire Girl vs. Frankenstein Girl, Grace and Anna Paquin! HAHA! There’s some gems in this round as well though and I can’t wait to see every single film this year, a personal first for me as I’ve always had to miss a few here and there the previous years. So let’s see what they’ve got to offer!

BLACK DYNAMITE

Directed by – Scott Sanders

Written by – Michael Jai White, Byron Minns, Scott Sanders

Starring – Kevin Chapman, Sean Christopher, Tommy Davidson, Richard Edson, Jason Jack Edwards, Arsenio Hall, Lauren Mary Kim, Brian McKnight, James McManus, Phil Morris, Michael Jai White

Set in the 70’s, Black Dynamite is a hero who’s out to take down the Man after his brother is killed and his city is overrun with drugs and alcohol.

Both an homage and a spoof of the blaxploitation flicks of the 70’s, I gotta admit that the trailer looks pretty funny. What I’ve heard about it is pretty good and I’m hoping this delivers some great laughs from start to finish. This will be the opening night picture which will be followed by the after party and it’s the complete opposite end of the spectrum compared to last years opening night feature Let The Right One In. I’m looking forward to starting the fest off on a light note and maybe I’ll roll out of the theater in laughter.

THE DARK HOUR

Written and Directed by – Elio Quiroga

Starring – Silke, Omar Munoz, Pepo Oliva, Carola Manzanares, Jorge Casalduero, Julio Perillan, Sergio Villanueva, Pablo Scola, Nadia de Santiago, Marco Gonzalez, Luis Sanchez-Gijon

A group of eight people must live underground to protect themselves from the effects of a nuclear war and from an even greater threat, mutants.

This one gives me the feeling of low budget which isn’t really a bad thing. There’s been quite a few low budget offerings over the last few years at TAD which were even better than the big budget movies showing. (Murder Party, Mulberry Street for example) The trailer doesn’t offer much besides some people running down hallways with guns and shadowy figures chasing them. This one will be a toss up. It could be good and it might be terrible, it really depends on how they work it. Mulberry Street didn’t shove the effects in your face too much and that’s probably due to lack of cash, but it works so well because the story is so good. At this point I’m not feeling too good about this one and I’m hoping that I’ll be pleasantly surprised. Fingers crossed!

Directed by – Peter Chan, Wai Man Yip

Written by – Tin Nam Chun, Junli Guo, Jiping He, Jianxin Huang, Jo Jo Yuet-chun Hui, Oi Wah Lam, Lan Xu, James Yuen

Starring – Jet Li, Andy Lau, Takeshi Kaneshiro, Jinglei Xu, Bao-ming Gu, Xiaodong Guo, Zhagqi Shi, Kuirong Wang, Yachao Wang, Bo Zhou

The story follows 3 blood brothers in the middle of a war. Based on a Qing Dynasty story, The Assassination of Ma.

I don’t normally get excited over the epic Asian war flicks. I tend to enjoy them when I see them though and I am a fan of Jet Li so I hope this one can entertain me. The trailer has some pretty impressive shots. Huge battles, hundreds dead, grand ceremonies and rich backdrops. I’m pretty sure this will be another great flick, I just can’t get myself hyped up for it as it doesn’t really fall into my favorite type of genre. The reviews seem mostly positive, I mean any flick with 7 or more out of 10 on IMDB seems to be uncommon. Or maybe I’m just always watching bad movies!

Directed by – Tommy Wirkola

Written by – Stig Frode Henriksen, Tommy Wirkola

Starring – Charlotte Frogner, Orjan Gamst, Stig Frode Henriksen, Vegar Hoel, Jeppe Laursen, Evy Kasseth Rosten, Jenny Skavlan, Bjorn Sundquist, Ane Dahl Torp, Lasse Valdal

A group of med students on vacation finds themselves under attack by Nazi zombies.

I sort of figured this would play at TAD this year and I’m kinda sad that I already watched it. (review here) Thankfully I enjoyed it and am looking forward to seeing it with the TAD crowd. It really has that festival feel to it and I can’t wait to listen to the crowd cheer and gasp along with the movie. It’s well done, funny at times and Nazi zombies couldn’t be any creepier really. Next year I’ll remember to hold my urge to watch flicks that I’m pretty sure I’ll be seeing at the fest, if that’s even possible!

Written and Directed by – D. Kerry Prior

Starring – David Anders, Cathy Shim, Louise Griffiths, Emiliano Torres, Jeff Rector, Stacy Glassgold, Chris Wylde, Mark Elias, Clint Jung, Jacy King

Joey’s friend Bart has returned from the Iraq War but sadly he didn’t make it alive. Unless you consider being a vampire alive.

Instantly compared to Shaun of the Dead, which goes the same for just about any horror/comedy nowadays. The trailer looks pretty good and I’m thinking it’s up to the two lead actors of the flick to keep this one afloat. If their performances are strong and funny than it should be a winner. I know the ‘friend who is a zombie/vampire/monster’ has been done before but I think it’s been awhile since I’ve seen one at least.

I haven’t come across much info on this one aside from one quick review I read that was pretty positive about it. I’m interested to see where this one goes and I hope the ride is a fun one.

STRIGOI

Written and Directed by – Faye Jackson

Starring – Canstantin Barbulescu, Camelia Maxim, Catalin Paraschiv, Dan Popa, Rudi Rosenfield

(From Official Site) Vlad investigates a mysterious death in his grandfather’s village that raises questions about land ownership in the community. The trail points to ex-communist bully Constantin Tirescu and his wife, but when Vlad confronts them, he discovers that the richest landowners in the village have become real bloodsuckers.

Don’t really know what to think about this one. Looks like another horror/comedy with vampires in it. Nothing really blew me away in the trailer but I won’t hold that against the flick. Looks well done and I just like saying the word strigoi. I think the problem might be that this is screening after Vampire Girl vs. Frankenstein Girl and I’m pretty sure that will be a hard film to follow, at least in my world! Looking forward to see how this one turns out though.

Christmas vacation is anything but peaceful as children begin turning on their parents.

Alright, this one I’m really looking forward to seeing. I’ve heard about this one in passing but didn’t really know anything about it other than some positive responses to it. The trailer made me feel really uncomfortable right away. I’ve got two kids now and when you start putting kids in movies as either the victims or the perpetrators, I get a sick feeling in my stomach. Not in a bad way mind you, but in a ‘this movie is going to affect me’ way. Kids are always creepy and this one looks sure to continue that tradition. Can’t wait to see this one.

Directed by – Andreas Schaap

Written by – Andreas Schaap, Fabian Winkelmann

Starring – Sami Loris, Manon Kahle, Jeff Burrell, Peter Farkas, Philipp Rafferty, Lucie Pohl, Katjana Gerz, Tobias Schenke, Bob Lenox, Ben Posener, Milton Welsh

After having his heart broken and feeling suicidal, Norman decides to meet with a group of like minded individuals. What he winds up finding is a group of killers waiting for their victim.

Billed as a romantic comedy with extreme horror, I’m really interested to see this one. It did look funny and it did look pretty gruesome from the trailer which sounds like a great combo to me. I’m not really sure where to go with this one. If the comedy is lacking but the gore is high, I’d enjoy it. If it’s the other way around than I’d still like it. I’m pretty sure I can’t go wrong with this one. Of course if it wasn’t funny or gory I might be upset. Only one review was up at IMDB from someone who saw it at Fantasia in Montreal but it was a positive review. Sounds like the kind of film that will be the perfect festival movie.

ROUGH CUT

Written and Directed by – Hun Jang

Starring – Su-hyeon Hong, Ji-Hwan Kang, Chang-Seok Ko, Ji-seob So

(From the TAD site) An arrogant actor who has so alienated the rest of his profession that the only person he can convince to co-star in his current gang film is an actual gangster with dreams of stardom.

Well, the trailer isn’t subtitled and I’m not really up on my Korean so if there’s any humour in there, I missed it. I’m sure there’s some comedy in there, you get that vibe from the trailer and the plot sounds interesting enough. At this point I’m probably the least interested in seeing this one. Of course I don’t have much to go on except for a few sentences of plot and a trailer that I don’t understand. Hopefully I’ll manage to find a subbed trailer to better get the smaller points of the story. Either that or I better find someone who knows Korean to translate for me!

So there you have it, all the films have been announced so all I have to do is wait another 16 days until the fun begins. Man, how do I even kill all that time? The schedule itself is lined up pretty well with a good mix of movies on each day. On top of that there’s the Shorts After Dark which is an International Short Film presentation, as well as Canadian made shorts playing before each movie. I’m not sure how I’m gonna be able to store all that info in my tiny head so I can give it all back to you guys but I’m gonna do my best.

Under the marquee – Will

Director: Peter Chan (2002)

Lanuage: Chinese w/ English subtitles

This movie is the 3rd short film on the DVD “Three Extremes … II,” a follow-up to the Japanese DVD “Three Extremes.” I’ve read some poor reviews of the second DVD, mostly complaining that the follow-up films aren’t really “extreme” like in the first.

It’s true that the films aren’t as horrific or gory as the original “Three Extremes,” but that doesn’t make them any less watchable. (By the way, Netflix reviews aren’t very helpful, IMHO. I’ve seen people give 1 star to a great movie solely because it was subtitled and not in English. Everyone’s got their own criteria for what makes a good or bad film; you may think that my reviews are BS. But I watch so many horror films, that I totally need to start writing them down because I sometimes forget if I’ve seen one

All three films on this DVD are good, but the standout is “Going Home,” a Chinese-language film by Peter Chan. I could say that I wish it were longer, but the length was completely appropriate to the story (that’s a novel idea in filmmaking, isn’t it?) With such standout, lush cinematography, great acting, and such a visceral soundtrack (and in some pivotal scenes, lack of a soundtrack, which I’ll talk about a lot in later posts), who wouldn’t want this film to go on and on?

“Going Home” is about a man who is keeping his dead wife alive, bathing her everyday, doing her hair, talking to her; all in the belief that very soon, she will resurrect. It’s a love story, obviously, but also about Western vs. traditional medicine; belief systems; and connections that transcend not just life, but physical form.

An amazing story right there. Add to it a boy who goes missing, a mysterious toddler girl with the most striking pale face and bright red coat, and a cop (the boy’s father) being held against his will in the man’s apartment and you’ve got a really great way to spend 90 or so minutes.Watch till the end and keep your bathroom breaks to a minimum. There’s a twist at the end that will completely fuck with your head and fall totally in love with this film.

What I really love about this film (and actually about so many foreign films), is the peek into other cultures that I get. The Western civilations’ way of dealing with death is in such contrast to most Eastern civilations; it’s fascinating to watch it played out in such an authentic way. Ghosts; resurrection; possession — all these things are a given in most Eastern cultures. In Western cultures, they are mocked and ridiculed. That basic difference is the major reason, for me, that Asian horror is much more interesting to watch. You don’t have to get past the first 45 minutes of “how can this be? ghosts aren’t real!” kind of crap that weighs down even the best Western horror films.

Eric Tsang plays Wai, the man caring for his wife, steals every scene he is in. Though is appeareance is very much the serial killer stereotype for American films, he is gentle and kind to the policeman he holds captive. His tenderness with his dead wife is truly heartbreaking and I couldn’t help but feel such sympathy and empathy for his character. I wanted her to resurrect. I wanted him to have his wife returned to him, despite the complete and utter creepiness of his daily ritual of bathing her and immersing her in Chinese herbs.

Eugenia Yuan plays the wife, Hai’er, and although she has very little “acting” screen time, the time she does have really shines. The video-tapes scenes of her blew me away.

There are a few little holes here and there but nothing to detract from the visual and emotional intensity that’s pulled off with just a few actors and a couple of sets. I highly recommend rentin the “Three Extremes … II” DVD and skipping right to “Going Home.” I watched that short four times while it was here at the house, and I’ll probably buy it.

No rating system for these reviews yet, but I usually rate a movie on whether or not I should shut my laptop while I’m watching it.

During “Going Home,” the laptop was shut off and put away.

This month’s issue of Videovista has recently gone up and it contains my review of Peter Chan

This month’s issue of Videovista has recently gone up and it contains my review of Peter Chan’s The Warlords (2007). It is not a bad film at all and it draws attention to two interesting characteristics about contemporary Chinese cinema.

Firstly, that while Chinese films are lagging behind the West in matters of digital jiggery-pokery, they have acess to material resources such as sets and extras that render a lot of these techniques largely moot. For example, I suspect that had The Warlords‘ battle scenes been shot for an American film, the armies would have been mostly digital and, as a result, much much larger. After all, why have a few dozen ships when you can have thousands? I call this the Troy Effect.

You can also see the impressive material infrastructure of Chinese cinema on display in Alexi Tan’s Blood Brothers (2007) ,which I also reviewed for Videovista. The film’s opening scenes are set in the Chinese country-side and instead of a few internal shots and maybe some location work, the film benefits from having been shot on what apears to be the kind of vast back-lot that Hollywood has long since transformed into theme parks.

Secondly, both films are set at times in Chinese history when there was a good deal of foreign involvement in China’s internal affairs. Indeed, Blood Brothers is set in 1930s Shanghai, which hosted a large British ex-pat community including J. G. Ballard. Similarly, The Warlords is set in the aftermath of the Opium Wars, the wars between China in Britain that not only netted Britain Hong Kong but which opened China up to foreign trade and cultural influence. However, despite this both films are completely free of British characters and Western faces.

Since the apologetics of Zhang Yimou’s Hero (2002), it has become tempting to see all Chinese cultural exports as exercises in nationalist propaganda and the degree of cultural re-appropriation going on in both films invite us to consider them in this very light. However, this strikes me as a rather egocentric vision of Chinese cinema. Not every film (or song) is about the West or even for Western consumption. As a result, it seems more reasonable to see this kind of historical airbrushing as being an expression not of ideological projection but of yielding to popular tastes. So just as American audiences prefer to think that their country won the Second World War single-handed, I suspect that most the Chinese audience would react badly to films that remind them of their country’s quasi-colonial status.

His role in The House of Flying Daggers (2004, dir. Zhang Yimou) notwithstanding, Takeshi Kaneshiro

His role in The House of Flying Daggers (2004, dir. Zhang Yimou) notwithstanding, Takeshi Kaneshiro has almost always appeared in modern-day movies. But in 2007 he was cast in two prominent historical dramas, The Warlords (dir. Peter Chan) and Red Cliff (dir. John Woo). How did Takeshi’s decidedly modern visage affect these two Hong Kong costume dramas? The results in each film are somewhat different and are a telling indication of perceptions of Chinese films in Asia and in the West.

Movie kings dress down, The Warlords, 2007

In The Warlords, Peter Chan’s gritty, realistic flick about a 19th century Qing Dynasty power struggle, Takeshi and his equally famous and glamorous co-stars Jet Li and Andy Lau are called upon to play their parts clad in animal skins and splattered with blood, sweat and mud. Jet Li reportedly gained weight and dirtied up to play his part (and was rewarded with his very first Best Actor statue at the 2008 Hong Kong Film Awards); he and the usually dapper Andy Lau also shaved their heads and grew scruffy beards for the film. At the start of the film Li vomits convincingly and Andy Lau has sex still dressed in his war togs.

Takeshi in furs, The Warlords, 2007

Takeshi, however, did not shave his head, though he did sport a tidy beard. Still, it was hard to spot Takeshi-the-movie-star in this flick, due to the strength of the film’s mise-en-scene. The film’s blood-caked impalings, stabbings and general fisticuffs, and its evocative smoky-toned cinematography overcame Takeshi’s good looks and he managed to fit into the overall rough-hewn look of the movie despite being one of the most beautiful people on the planet.

In Red Cliff, however, the film’s art direction is much less down-and-dirty and much more stylized and this somehow makes Takeshi’s perfect nose and expensive haircut more anachronistic than in Peter Chan’s film. John Woo’s film aims for the heroic, not the realistic, and here Takeshi’s Prada-model gorgeousness shines a bit too brightly for a period piece. Although co-star Tony Leung Chi-Wai cuts no less a handsome figure, he’s a bit stronger actor and is a little more convincing as a third-century Chinese warrior. Tony also gets to wear armour and swing a sword in a big fighting scene, whereas Takeshi watches on the sidelines in pristine, flowing white robes without a hair out of place.

Pristine Takeshi, Red Cliff, 2008

Somehow Takeshi’s overt modernity works against him much more in Red Cliff than in The Warlords and this is underscored by each films’ respective directorial vision. Peter Chan’s film feels much more in step with current Chinese cinematic trends, moving away from superficial heroic images towards a deeper, more serious critique (in the same way that Johnnie To’s Election 1 & 2 completely deglamorized the Triad film, in contrast to the gauzy romantic fantasies of gangster brotherhood from Andrew Lau’s Young & Dangerous series). In comparison, John Woo’s film seems like a nostalgic, old-fashioned look backwards at classic Shaw Brothers and 1990s wuxia productions. Interestingly, a truncated version of Red Cliff is slated to open in the U.S. and Europe in 2009 while The Warlords has not received distribution outside of Asia. This perhaps reflects outdated perceptions of Hong Kong films in the West, where the most recognizable HK actor is the long-dead Bruce Lee and most viewers relate Chinese films to out-of-sync dubbing and chop-socky action pieces. Since precious few Western viewers keep abreast of current trends in Chinese cinema it stands to reason that John Woo’s conventionally retro, faintly Orientalist vision of history is more marketable outside of Asia than Peter Chan’s more contemporary presentation.

The Warlords was a big box office hit in Asia and, Red Cliff, Part 1 similarly broke box office records across Asia. Release of Red Cliff, Part 2 was moved up to capitalize on the success of Part 1 and it premiered in Beijing on Jan. 4. The Warlords cleaned up at both the 2007 Hong Kong Film Awards (eight awards including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor) and the 2008 Golden Horse Awards (Best Picture, Best Director). Red Cliff, however, was shut out of the major awards at this year’s Golden Horse presentation, with only four nominations and no wins. Perhaps as with the Academy Awards and the last installment of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, Red Cliff, Part 2 will fare better at awards time than its predecessor. For now it remains to be seen whether it will duplicate the The Warlords’ hometown awards success.

By Ho Yi STAFF REPORTER At the Golden Horse Awards (金馬獎) on Saturday night, Taiwanese cinema seeme

By Ho Yi
STAFF REPORTER

At the Golden Horse Awards (金馬獎) on Saturday night, Taiwanese cinema seemed ready to celebrate an early victory as local productions dominated in almost all the categories that had Taiwanese nominees. Cape No. 7 (海角七號) was undoubtedly leading the way.

The film ended up taking home top honors in five categories, including best supporting actor and outstanding Taiwanese film of the year.

But things took an unexpected turn 10 minutes before the ceremony ended, with Hong Kong’s Peter Ho-Sun Chan (陳可辛) and his big-budget costume drama The Warlords (投名狀) walking away with awards for best feature film and best director.

BASICS
The Taipei Times caught a few jury members and festival chairwoman Peggy Chiao (焦雄屏) at the after-party and asked them their views on this year’s Golden Horse.

“I think before we can talk about the award result, we should first have the jury system under review,” said Wang Keng-yu (王耿瑜), a film producer, film and music festival curator.

The judging process is divided into two stages: the preliminary, with 20 judges, and the final, with seven. In the first stage, discussions and meetings were broken into groups because each member of the jury is responsible for the nominations in several award categories, rather than all the jurors working together.

“As a result, the nomination list is not a general agreement among all jury members but a consensus within the groups,” Wang sad. “We turned in our grades and read the nomination list on the newspaper.”

“The final scores are reached combining the grades we made and those made by the jury in the second stage. None of the jury members knew the results before they were announced,” Wang said. “It’s a consensus all right. But is it a fair and credible consensus? There is still room for improvement.”

Wu Mi-sen (吳米森), a film director, said that Taiwanese movies had done well.

“As a jury member, I felt no pressure to be patriotic this year. I cast each vote with confidence and assurance, knowing that I wasn’t rooting for the film just because it was made in Taiwan.”

“Personally, I think Kelly Lin (林熙蕾) and Takeshi Kaneshiro (金城武) have made great progress — from pretty-faced pop-idols to serious actors. Their works haven’t been recognized partially because people still see them as idols rather than actors,” he said.

Chang Chang-yen (張昌彥), a veteran film critic and scholar, said: “As a juror in the first stage, I am not satisfied with the results. Many Taiwanese movies were left out.”

“As far as the jury system goes, there is still a lot of room for improvement. Unlike the Oscars, which have 3,000 film professionals at its disposal, there are only 30 of us, so that each member is assigned to a certain number of award categories,” he said. “It causes problems when, say, a cinematographer needs to be the judge for editing or a specialized field he or she is not familiar with. It can easily lead to a situation where the one who knows the field leads the discussion and forms a consensus.”

BATTLE

Chiao said that the competition in the best feature film and best director categories was a battle between film industries.

“Behind the productions from Hong Kong and China are colossal amounts of money, rich resources and mega stars. Taiwanese movies are comparatively low-budget and human drama-driven. We may yet grow stronger in the industry contest. But this year’s Taiwanese films definitely surpassed others in content and artistry,” Chiao said.

In related news, some Internet users in Taiwan said they were irritated by Chan’s remark that Cape No. 7 was the “hope for Chinese movie industry.”

“I don’t have much to say about the results, but I have something to say to director Peter Chan,” Internet user “Asmmilk” posted. “Sorry, but Cape No. 7 is not a Chinese movie.”

However, an Internet user nicknamed “Perry680606” defended Chan, saying in a posting that Chan probably didn’t do it on purpose.

“He has long been making movies in China, so it would be reasonable that he just used the phrase ‘Chinese movie’ without even thinking about it,” he wrote..

(je to drama no (: )

Servis: 70% / csfd
Režie: Peter Chan
Hrají: Jet Li, Takeshiro Kaneshivo, Andy Lau

Granny here has kindly acquiesced to my addition of gossip to her blog. I know her blog is focused on Japanese/Korean gossip; but as it is, I only know something about Hong Kong entertainment – and I apologise if it bores her loyal audience to tears – so I’m going to blog about the Hong Kong Film Awards, that being the only major event lately (And this will be my first and last post until after my Tripos.) Of course, this is more than a week overdue but I just had to comment, especially after finally finishing my download of the award show and picking up a copy of the London Global Times at the Chinese supermarket (which had a two page splash of the results) and feeling irritated all over again. I’ve left out all the technical awards; because, who cares?

Best Picture:
Warlords

They say money can buy a good film. I agree. But I don’t agree money can buy heart. Sometimes, when a production is too grand and takes itself too seriously, it lacks any emotional connection.

Best Director:
Peter Chan – Warlords

Ok. Fine. But I remain a Johnnie To admirer.

Best Actor:
Jet Li – Warlords

Jet Li always makes me feel uncomfortable. I’m not saying he did that horrible a job, just that when you look at the rest of the nominees, it’s a bit strange. Sean Lau is greatly talented and has always been (from the time I watched his very fine performance as Fong Jeen Bok as a kid); but since he won last year, it’s expected that he wouldn’t win. Andy Lau – idol, not actor. But he tries. I really like watching Simon Yam, but that was the wrong film to get nominated for. He did a very good job but the role was too easy for him. And last but not least, I’ve never been impressed by Aaron Kwok. He’s not as strong an actor, but maybe it’s because he’s been shaking off his pretty boy image. When a person starts off at -20, you get very impressed when he reaches 50. But it’s not 100. Yet.

Best Actress:
Siqin Gaowa – The Post-modern Life of My Aunt

Didn’t watch this, so no complaints. At least Charlene Choi didn’t win, as respectable as her effort was.

Best Supporting Actor:
Andy Lau – Protege

Andy Lau won because he’s Andy Lau. Usually competent, but normally just posing and nothing earth-shattering. I would like to see Nick Cheung get something for once though.

Best Supporting Actress:
Siu Yam-Yam – The Pye-Dog

Didn’t watch The Pye-Dog, so I have no idea. No idea who she is either and no opinion about the rest of the nominees. No opinion on anything.

Best Newcomer:
Kate Tsui – Eye In The Sky

Well-deserved. Her nuanced and measured performance was the class of the field; some nominees were just there as space-fillers. Especially commendable because some of her TV work is absolutely egregious. She’s one of my favourite Miss Hong Kongs and it’s always a nice feeling when my eye for talent – or otherwise – is vindicated.

Best Original Movie Song:
“Push Too Hard” – Love Is Not All Around
Singer: Kary Ng

I am amused. The song is very pop-style; but then again so was Sammi Cheng’s absolutely lovely 終生美麗 (many) years back. Only problem is, Kary Ng sang out of tune again. Is she trying to compete with Stephy Tang aka 邓走音 who can go out of tune more often?

Best New Director:
Yau Nai-Hoi – Eye In The Sky

Very good movie, and in fact I enjoyed it more than some other big movies of the year. But on a technical level, he betrays his lack of experience with the way the movie started to run out of steam towards the end. The literal ‘eye in the sky’ theme is a bit too much in your face for me. I’m looking forward to seeing more from him.

PROJECTS ANNOUNCED

Zack Snyder is set to direct “Guardians of Ga’Hoole,” an animated feature film based on the series of children’s books by Kathryn Lasky. Village Roadshow is making the film and Warner Bros. will distribute. Pic is set in the Forest of Tyto, where Barn Owls live in peace until their kingdom is threatened by an evil that could destroy their home. Script was written by John Orloff (“A Mighty Heart”) and John Collee (“Master and Commander”). The pic will be produced by Zareh Nalbandian, with Donald DeLine, Deborah Snyder and Lionel Wigram exec producing. The intention is to execute in Sydney, Australia, through Animal Logic, which worked with Village Roadshow and WB on “Happy Feet.” The film is on a fast track and is likely to be ready by 2009 or 2010.

Fox Animation has optioned the mummy-themed young-adult book “The Anubis Tapestry: Between Twilights” by Bruce Zick. Fox plans a loose adaptation of the novel, which kicks off when a mummy’s curse condemns Dr. George Henry’s spirit to the Egyptian Underworld. While trying to free him, Henry’s son Chance plumbs the depths of the Underworld and encounters a variety of monsters. The tome, which creates a detailed mythology, was published in 2006.

Kopelson Entertainment made a preemptive acquisition of “Parents Weekend,” a spec by Barry Schwartz. Deal was mid-six figures. Script is a youth-targeted comedy about a college freshman, secretly attending art school, who must convince his parents he’s still enrolled in the college of their dreams. Arnold and Anne Kopelson will produce, and bought the script right after reading it, using Kopelson Entertainment’s development fund with Equus Media.

PROJECT UPDATES

Shia LaBeouf has signed on to star in Universal’s techno thriller “Dark Fields.” Neil Burger (“The Illusionist”) will direct the pic, which is based on Alan Glynn’s 2002 novel “The Dark Fields.” Story centers on a young man who comes into possession of the ultimate smart pill, and the events that ensue. Leslie Dixon (“Hairspray”) adapted the screenplay and will produce. Dixon acquired the material and wrote the script for less than her usual quote in exchange for having more control over the project.

Albert Brooks has signed on to appear in at least four episodes of Showtime’s “Weeds.” He’ll play the father-in-law of Mary-Louise Parker’s character. Thesp’s recent credits include “Looking for Comedy in the Muslim World” and voice work on “The Simpsons Movie.”

Barra Grant’s romantic comedy “HangingOutHookingUpFallingInLove” has signed an ensemble cast of Richard E. Grant, Carrie-Anne Moss, Janeane Garofalo, Jenna Elfman, Rita Rudner, Camryn Manheim, Caroline Aaron and Johnny Pacar. Grant is directing from her own script. Story centers on a newly separated father having to learn how to date again with help from his teenage son who himself dreams of conquering one girl’s heart. Brian Reilly is producing the indie project and Laura Hopper is exec producing. Shooting begins this week in Los Angeles.

DreamWorks has tapped David DiGilio to adapt the Oni Press graphic novel “The Damned,” by Cullen Bunn and Brian Hurtt. Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald are producing via their DreamWorks-based shingle. Described as horror-noir, “Damned” follows a Los Angeles detective who discovers that a new gang with ties to the supernatural has infiltrated the city. Eric Gitter is also producing via his Closed on Mondays Entertainment, the film production arm of Oni Press Mark. Peter Schwerin will exec produce.

Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert have tapped “The X-Files” vet John Shiban to exec produce their upcoming syndie skein “Wizard’s First Rule.” Shiban, who is with the CW’s “Supernatural,” will help translate Terry Goodkind’s series of books into a weekly TV series. Project is set in a fantasy world of magic and wizards and focuses on the Seeker, a man who is destined to save the world, but not before battling a whole bunch of bad guys. Scribe said he plans “to take a cue from ‘The X-Files’” in setting up the skein’s structure.

BUSINESS NEWS

NATO prexy John Fithian warned Sunday that the cinema industry is headed for “a potential train wreck” over 3-D if studios and theater owners do not settle their dispute over digital cinema fees in short order. And he noted that while heavyweights such as Jeffrey Katzenberg and James Cameron were early and ardent supporters of digital, key helmers like Steven Spielberg remain on the fence. Fithian, in his keynote address to the Digital Cinema Summit at NAB in Las Vegas, noted that there are 10 major studio 3-D releases skedded for 2009, including DreamWorks Animation’s “Monsters vs. Aliens” and Fox’s Cameron opus “Avatar,” but “we don’t have the screens for them. We have less than 1,000 3-D screens in the U.S. and fewer than that in the rest of the world.” Yet negotiations between the studios and theater owners are at something of an impasse, said Fithian, as studios try to reduce the Virtual Print Fee that helps defray exhibitors’ costs to install digital cinema systems.

Randall Emmett and George Furla’s Emmett/Furla Films have set up an equity fund worth more than $100 million with Japanese-based Imec Corp. and Korona Corp. The deal marks Emmett/Furla’s first foray into international co-production, with plans to fund three pictures per year over five years. Pics will be produced by Emmett, Furla and Imec’s Fuminori Hayashida. Sadamitsu Otsuka and M. Dal Walton will exec produce, and Tommy Lee Thomas will co-exec produce. “Having produced almost 60 films, we felt it was time to expand our business model and present an opportunity for other filmmakers to realize their projects,” Emmett said. Emmett/Furla will continue its production-financing arrangement with NuImage/Millennium Films. That combo co-produced “88 Minutes,” an Al Pacino starrer directed by Jon Avnet that opens Friday; and “Righteous Kill,” starring Pacino and Robert DeNiro, which opens in September through Summit.

Japan’s Cine Qua Non has closed its multiplex in South Korean capital Seoul. Cine Qua Non had operated a subsidiary, Cine Qua Non Korea, since 2005, having acquired a lease for a 5-screen multiplex in Myung-dong, a popular entertainment area in the heart of Seoul and one especially famous for Japanese tourists. Opened in January 2006, the theater has attracted art house movie fans in Korea and specialized as a theater for Japanese movies. Although Cine Qua Non took a long term view of its operations, the complex struggled to make money and matters were recently made worse by issues over the ownership of the building. It is not clear yet whether the company will try to find another location for the cinema or abandon the Korean exhibition business.

Korea’s Showbox has announced that it will close its production shingle Motion101. The shingle was established in August 2006 by Mediaplex, at the time Korea’s largest movie conglom, in a move to boost in-house production capacity. Mediaplex owned distribution company Showbox and Korea’s largest multiplex chain Megabox, though last year sold the Megabox theaters to Australian financial consortium Macquarrie. Mediaplex provided 80% of the initial $2.6 million capital for Motion 101 through its subsid Showbox and teamed up with stock market-listed IT company Innet, which put the rest of the start up coin. Since then Motion101 has been developing helmer Park Kwang-hyun (“Welcome To Dongmakgol”)’s new project “Fist”, a $ 15 million budget sci-fi action drama. But there have been internal disagreements with in Mediaplex concerning support for the title. The sudden closure decision has shocked the Korean industry. Only last month Motion101 announced that it was developing a dance movie with JYP, a renowned music producer and composer who made and promoted the Korean Wave superstar Rain.

CBS chief Les Moonves is one of the top-paid execs in media, according to an SEC proxy filing that revealed a total pay package of $36.8 million in 2007. That was up 29% from the prior year and nearly quadruple the take of CBS chairman Sumner Redstone, who received $9.7 million. Moonves’ tally included a salary of $5.3 million, a bonus of $18.5 million and the rest in stock options accumulated over several years. The topper signed a new contract that took effect last October. It will pay him a lower salary and tie his compensation more directly to the perfromance of CBS shares. The company’s stock has been sagging of late. It declined 21% from its high in July 2007 to the end of 2007, and has dropped 21% more since January.

NBCU posted a 3% year-over-year gain in operating profit and revenue in the first quarter, but the rosy numbers came against the gloomy backdrop of parent GE’s results. GE reported its worst quarter in years, sending the stock market into a tailspin. Earnings of $4.3 billion fell short of estimates — a rarity for the button-down conglom — and stunned Wall Street just one month after chief exec Jeffrey Immelt had issued an upbeat forecast. GE, of which NBCU comprises only 10% in terms of revenues, saw its stock plummet 13% to $32.05, the biggest single-day dip in more than 20 years. The Dow Jones, of which GE is a component, fell 2% amid worries that the company’s state symbolized the worsening U.S. economy. NBCU was one of just two of GE’s six units (along with infrastructure) to report gains in the quarter, and its 3% upswing in operating profit to $714 million also fell a bit short of projections and repped a slowdown from 5% growth in the previous quarter. The entertainment division’s results were driven primarily by cable, homevid and the NBC network. In a memo to staffers, NBCU topper Jeff Zucker noted the bleak economic climate, but emphasized the pluses. Parks and resorts, he said, doubled its operating profit. Hulu, a video streaming site in which NBCU and News Corp. are major stakeholders, launched in the quarter and Zucker said its ad inventory had sold out. Among cable nets, USA finished No. 1 in every category for the seventh consecutive quarter, Zucker said, while Bravo and Oxygen had their best first quarters ever in terms of ratings and financial results.

STRIKE NEWS/ LABOR ISSUES

In a move that muddies the outlook for looming actor negotiations, leaders of the Screen Actors Guild have offered AFTRA the opportunity to rejoin SAG at the bargaining table. SAG’s offer, made in a Sunday evening announcement, said AFTRA would have until Wednesday to respond. An AFTRA spokeswoman said the union would have no response until Monday at the earliest. The move, which had not been expected, comes two weeks after AFTRA angrily split off from SAG over SAG’s alleged attempt to “raid” the soap “The Bold and the Beautiful” — an allegation SAG has denied, insisting its leaders had merely responded to a castmember’s concerns about the AFTRA contract. The March 29 breakup of the 27-year joint bargaining relationship culminated years of hostility between the unions over jurisdictional issues. SAG’s brief announcement on Sunday said only that 81% of its national board had OK’d the offer, which was approved at the tail end of a daylong meeting at the Sheraton Hotel in downtown Los Angeles. In recent months, the AFL-CIO has been attempting — with little success so far — to smooth out the extensive disputes between the thesp unions. SAG’s talks with the Alliance of Motion Picture & Television Producers on a new feature-primetime deal are set to begin Tuesday, while AFTRA’s talks on its primetime contract are set to start April 28. A spokesman for the AMPTP said the group would have no comment. Should AFTRA spurn SAG’s offer, the guild will be under pressure to reach an agreement with the AMPTP by April 28 or face the prospect of ongoing jurisdictional warfare with AFTRA. Should SAG fail to reach an agreement by then, AFTRA’s expected to make a deal quickly — since its leaders tend to be far more moderate than SAG’s and its deal covers just three shows — and then go after new shows in areas of shared jurisdiction. SAG’s heading into the negotiations with a fractured front. Over the weekend, SAG leaders split over a divisive proposal that would have limited member voting on the contract to thesps who work at least one day a year. In its meeting Saturday in downtown Los Angeles, about 60% of SAG’s national board sent the proposal to its guild governance review committee for study — effectively keeping it from having an impact on contract negotiations. The bargaining is likely to be contentious, given that recent informal talks with Disney CEO Robert Iger and News Corp. president Peter Chernin went nowhere. And SAG president Alan Rosenberg raised a red flag over the weekend in a letter to members by reiterating that SAG must achieve an increase in DVD residuals — a position that’s a nonstarter for the congloms. The “qualified voting” proposal, by limiting voting to SAG members who work regularly, probably would have resulted in less support for a possible strike when the contract expires June 30. But opponents have asserted that the idea is elitist and goes against the democratic principles of SAG.

The Warlords

- 1 -
