A resposta do Conde, contudo, é bem menos eloquente: - “Patife!

Libertar-me desse mausoléu. Vou ocultar-me no seu manto. Coitado do Khan, perdeu a viagem.

A razão eu ignoro; vai ver, o morceguinho dourado carregava o mojo deles. O velho agricultor aproveita a manobra pra dar no pé.

A princípio, Van Helsing recusa.

- Certo!

That’s all, folks!

“Does the body rule the mind or does the mind rule the body? I don´t know…”

Frankenstein created the woman

Año: 1967

País: Gran Bretaña

86 min.

Fotografía: Arthur Grant

Música: James Bernard

Guión: Anthony Hinds

Reparto: Peter Cushing, Susan Denberg, Thorley Walters, Robert Morris

I looked back over my reviews for the year and was surprised at how few Vampire flicks were in the mix. What the hell, I’ll rent a couple. Today we have Hammer’s attempt to drag Dracula kicking and screaming into the 1970’s, in the aptly named ‘Dracula A.D. 1972′. Tomorrow I review the Canadian horror-comedy ‘Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter’.

We begin with a stagecoach rolling out of control then crashing. We see that Dracula has received a stagecoach wheel spoke to the chest and is fading fast. Van Helsing, also injured from the crash, drags himself over to the count and really pushes down on that wheel until there is nothing left but dust. Van Helsing takes his last breath and then dies. A man happens by and picks up Dracula’s ring and scoops some of his dust into a vile. Fast-forward 100 years to a group of mods that have crashed an uptight socialite’s party. When group member Johnny Alucard suggests they try something different, even dangerous, they agree to take part in a black magic ritual. The only one with reservations is Jessica Van Helsing, a blood relation to the infamous vampire hunter. The ritual raises Dracula up from the ashes, and this time he intends to eliminate the Van Helsing’s bloodline.

“The Count is back, with an eye for London’s hot pants . . . and a taste for everything”. That tagline is terrible! Just awful. But like many things in this movie, it’s badness makes me chuckle. It has moments of ‘so bad it’s good’, and some moments that are just plain bad. This film has a pretty lame title and contains one of the worst musical scores I have ever heard. I assume they weren’t trying to make a comedy. It did make me laugh though, whether it was intentional or not. At one point Van Helsing figures out that the surname Alucard is Dracula spelled backwards. You wouldn’t believe how he works through it.

I am a sucker for the 70’s. I love the horror and exploitation films from this decade. I love the hair and the fashions and the music. I also love Christopher Lee, who doesn’t get nearly enough screen time. Those bloody eyes were cool! Cushing of course is also great and does a formidable job of it. Unfortunately it is Jessica Van Helsing and her pals who get the most screen time. Stephanie Beacham, who plays Jessica, didn’t really move me. I enjoyed her best when she was hypnotized and wasn’t speaking. Christopher Neame who plays Johnny Alucard is a bit over-dramatic, but I must admit, he was pretty entertaining at times. I enjoyed Caroline Munro who plays Laura Bellows. She is great fun, and what an amazing head of hair! Jessica’s boyfriend was a bit wishy-washy, but the rest of the cast we’re okay. It’s not really the cast that is the problem. The dialog is pretty ugly. They are a little over enthusiastic with the catch phrases. Can you dig it man? I found the groups conversations occasionally amusing. But more often than not, I found them annoying.

There’s a bit of the red stuff in one scene but there’s not much otherwise. Gore is pretty much non-existent, but there is a decent skin rotting from the bone and turning to ash sequence. I really liked the opening sequence with the stagecoach. I also liked the ending, even though it was a bit anti-climatic. One of the best scenes in the film outside of the Cushing/Lee bits is the “black magic ritual”. Alucard shouting incantations, while some appropriate raising the devil music plays and the group are “Digging it” and getting really groovy. It’s a really cool scene man! That is until Alucard cuts himself, bleeds into a chalice, and then pours it all over one of the girls. Everything kind of goes haywire and they start running out of the building. This is one of those “so bad it’s good” scenes. I would pretty much recommend any of the earlier Lee-Hammer vampire films over this one. But ‘Dracula A.D. 1972′ has it’s moments of glory, even though many of them are from unintentional laughs. It entertained me enough to pass it and it got a cherry for making me laugh.

Dungeon Rating: 3/5

Directed By: Alan Gibson

Starring: Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing, Stephanie Beacham, Christopher Neame, Michael Coles, Marsha A. Hunt, Caroline
Munro, Janet Key, William Ellis, Philip Miller, Michael Kitchen

Keeping up a blog is hard work once you leave college and have Real Life to deal with. Yeah. Same lame excuse as everybody else. When I finally have a spare moment to relax, I’d rather go on YouTube and watch episodes of QI than anything.

Oh, you haven’t heard of QI? Well, maybe I do have a topic to blog about for a minute! (I have mentioned it before, but what else am I to do on a Saturday night?) QI is a panel trivia show in Britain, (it stands for Quite Interesting) hosted by the wonderful Stephen Fry (Dr. Gordon Gordon Wyatt on Fox’s Bones to you kids who aren’t much anglophiles). Each season is a letter of the alphabet, and each episode is a take off from that letter. On one hand it’s a show to learn weird pieces of trivia, and on the other it’s just fine to listen to British comedians pretend they know something, and digress from there. You get some real gems floating around on YouTube, even if you don’t immediately recognize the comedians. For example:

The panel discusses British accents in Hollywood, and Alan Rickman.

How to defend yourself against an alligator.

A great story from Stephen about Dracula and Van Helsing.

Now you know why we say “hello” when we answer the phone.

Campy German words.

And my personal favorite, the Moonwalking Bird!

I totally blame Taylor for this, as I do most things I enjoy. This is why we are friends, because we can share a love for bizarre things like British quiz shows. I mean, really. I dare you not to get hooked!

By not riding the bus anymore I’ve found I have less time to things done. I’ll work on that for you. Until next time… ever wanted to know what the Queen has in her handbag?

It impressed the hell out of me. Certainly, it’s some of the best horror literature to come out this year, and as 2009 has seen new books from Sarah Langan, Dan Simmons, and Stephen King, that’s no mean feat.

I’m curious to see if it’ll end up being as successful as it deserves to be. Technically, it’s a YA novel, and I have trouble imagining it showing up in too many middle school libraries or Scholastic bookorders.1 The Monstrumologist is an unequivocally R-rated book, both for the extremity of its violence and the darkness of its themes; sizable chunks of dialogue are devoted to discussions of eugenics and Nietzche’s Übermensch (timely topics in the book’s late 1800s academic setting). I don’t doubt for a second kids’ ability to handle the material, but I have slightly less faith in the adults who have a hand in choosing what they get to read. I worked in a bookstore for a few years with a children’s section run by an “expert” who seemed to be under the impression that anyone under the age of twenty-one was mentally and emotionally retarded.

Maybe I’m wrong. I readily admit to having no idea what’s going on in the world of YA literature. Maybe it’s more sophisticated than when I was a kid. The last thing I read that qualified as belonging to the genre was that Deathly Hallows book, which was pretty fucking dumb.

I’m getting sidetracked here. What I wanted to talk about was something that I realized while reading this book, the title character of which is a professor of (…have you guessed it?…) monstrumology, a little-known, little-respected field of study, well, monsters. Or, as Yancey’s website puts it:

What I realized is this: I fucking love monster hunters in tweed suits. Love ‘em. Possibly my favorite horror sub-genre, ranking even higher than zombie apacolypse. (Possibly. Don’t quote me.) I’ve put a fair amount of thought into it since then, and I’m not sure I can explain my affection. It might have something to do with getting to see the frail-but-intelligent getting to be the heroes for once. Perhaps I just like the idea of old-timey academia, monsters or no. Or maybe I just have a fondness for earth-toned suits.

Here are a few of the badassical bookworms I’ve dug on over the years:

Abraham Van Helsing

As far as I know, the man who took on Count Dracula is the original. In most movie versions, he’s portrayed as a vampire expert, but in Bram Stoker’s book, he’s an expert in just about everything (a category into which vampirism happens to fall).

Next to Dracula himself, I don’t know if there’s any other character in literature who has shown up in as many adaptations and sequels across all mediums as this guy. The worst, by far, would have to be the Hugh Jackman movie, in which V.H. is written as being some kind of cowboy/priest/angel…maybe a werewolf? Some shit. I don’t really remember. On a personal note, I saw Van Helsing in a theater in Prague, a city that appears in the movie at one point. Hugh Jackman looks out upon its unmistakable medieval skyline and breaths, “Budapest.”

Perhaps not the best, but at least my favorite, would be Peter Cushing in the Hammer series of Dracula films. Nowhere else is he portrayed as being so dapper, to the point of dandihood. The man’s just as likely to wear a tweed three-piece as he is to wear a purple crushed velvet suit worthy of Chuck Bass. You know he’s in dire straights when his immaculately slicked-back hair gets messy. A little.

It is unclear why the good people at Hammer Film Productions felt compelled to change his first name from “Abraham” to “J.”

Dr. Henry Armitage

Miskatonic University’s head librarian is one of the few H.P. Lovecraft characters to ever accomplish something other than going crazy or getting squished, and for this reason, some critics consider “The Dunwich Horror” to be one of the Mythos’s weaker entries. It’s true that it’s got a different adventure-to-horror ratio than much of Lovecraft’s writing, but the idea that this somehow makes it inferior is garbage. That there is an actual range of emotional and dramatic possibilities throughout the Cthulhu Mythos is exactly why writers are still dabbling in it decades later.

Rupert Giles

The father figure/mentor of Buffy the Vampire Slayer certainly fits the academic monster hunter trope: tweedy attire, glasses, stuffy accent, works in a library. As tends to be the case with the show’s characters, though, Giles is written against type. As we eventually learn, he dropped out of Oxford at twenty-one to play in a rock band and practice black magic (which I guess leaves me a little confused as to what kind of credentialing he has that allows him to work at a California public high school). As tends to be the case with the show’s characters’ histories, it all comes back to bite him and the people he cares about.

–

1 Do these still exist? Am I showing my age?

Hope you didn’t think we were done with Halloween! Like all good horror fans, TSFI is ensconce

Hope you didn’t think we were done with Halloween! Like all good horror fans, TSFI is ensconced in horror movie marathon. So here’s what has been watched so far…. Do I have to mention here there be discreet linkage? Be sure to explore. If you haven’t been during the 31 posts blog to Halloween, there are many treats hidden there.

Instead of going for the obvious Hammer Horror choices like The Horror of Dracula, I tried to mix it up a little.

Though I was fascinated by Christopher Lee’s feral agressive sexualized Dracula as a teen, I find myself becoming drawn more and more to Peter Cushing’s amoral deluded Doctor Frankenstein as I get older. The evil that he represents in the Frankenstein cycle of films is so much more real. Well, in a pulpy over the top way. But in the colorful atmosphere of Hammer Films that’s close enough for me.

Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed, the 5th film in the cycle, takes the spirit of the original novel and runs it through the early 70s shock combine. In alot of ways this is one is pretty gruesome and, in one scene, sleazy. Cushing pretty much dominates this cast, though George Pravda’s portrayal as Dr. Brandt is memorable as well. Veronica Carlson’s turn as the gothic horror honey of the piece is merely okay. A good start to the fest.

How was I to know I was going to be doing a Veronica Carlson double feature? Dracula Has Risen from The Grave was a surprise in several ways. It actually has continuity with previous installments in a clever way. The prologue fits around the time of The Horror of Dracula and the movie starts proper around the time following Dracula Prince of Darkness. While not having Van Helsing or vampire hunting monks, it has a decent cast of supporting characters. I enjoyed the turns of Ewan Hooper as the tormented priest and Michael Ripper as tavern owner Max. Just wish I could get the appeal of Barry Andrews. Not that he’s bad just compared to Lee’s Dracula, he’s a really trivial hero. That said, he’s sudden conversion from atheist to true believer is handled pretty succinctly in this most overtly religious of the Dracula cycle. Some obvious plotting flubs keep this from being my favorite but it had that flavor I crave!

Then the fest jumped from Hammer to 1953’s House of Wax. What can I say? It is a movie that seems to bridge two eras of horror. Vincent Price is great as usual. But the more I watch this one, I am more freaked out by Carolyn Jones’s portrayal of Sue’s friend. Did people like her really exist? Yes it is a campy movie but there are many effective bits. I really enjoy the bit when Professor Jerrod is giving the tour of the museum. And the chase through the rainy fog shrouded streets. And the elevator murder. And the part where Professor Jerrod…uh…loses face with Sue. I wish there were more horror villains like Professor Jerrod than Jason. I mean there is always room for one more knife wielding psychotic but could we get some classy monsters too?

Due to Tim Lucas’s awesome commentary on the latest DVD of Baron Blood, House of Wax lead me to this Bava shocker. Baron Blood is not the best Bava but damn it sure finds its way back to the player a lot. It sends my brain back to a time when late night was ruled by horror films and not info-mercials. The atmosphere is mesmerizing. I also enjoy the way that Bava uses the Baron Blood character to make commentary on his obsessions. Very meta for its time. While it does resound in proximity to House of Wax, it seems more personal. Before I start to babble..Here’s to shutting up!

Here’s a brief quote from Peter Cushing, talking about the success of ‘Dr. Who and the Daleks’, and the fact that the films were, rather inevitably, panned by the critics.

“I had played Winston Smith in ‘1984′ on television, and the next thing I played ‘Doctor Who’. I was doing it in the cinema while Bill Hartnell was doing it on TV! That’s the way it goes. It was no surprise to me to learn that the first ‘Doctor Who’ film was in the top twenty box office hits of 1965, despite the panning the critics gave us. That’s why they made the sequel and why they spent twice as much money on it. Those films are among my favourites because they brought me popularity with younger children. They’d say their parents didn’t want to meet me in a dark alley but ‘Doctor Who’ changed that. After all, he is one of the most heroic and successful parts an actor can play. That’s one of the main reasons the series had such a long run on TV. I am very grateful for having been part of such a success story.”

The Gorgon is a 1964 British horror film directed by Terence Fisher for Hammer.

It stars Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Barbara Shelley and Richard Pasco. The film was photographed by Michael Reeves, and designed by Bernard Robinson. For the score James Bernard combined a soprano with a little-known electronic instrument called the Novachord. The film marks one of the few occasions when Hammer turned to Greek mythology for inspiration; this time it is the legend of the Gorgon that is respun for the Hammer audiences.

Tagline: A Monster With the Power to Turn Living Screaming Flesh Into Stone!

Trivia:

Prudence Hyman’s snake-filled wig was worked by five wires which were attached to a box that was about 25 feet behind her.

Although the UK cinema version was uncut some shots of the Gorgon’s decapitated head were slightly darkened by the BBFC.

Actress Barbara Shelley, who played the possessed heroine, Carla Hoffmann, wanted to play the part of the gorgon as well for continuity, and suggested to producer Anthony Nelson Keys that she use a special wig with live green garden snakes woven into it for a more realistic effect. Her idea was rejected by Keys due to budget and time considerations. When Keys saw the abysmal gorgon effects in the finished film, he told Shelley that he should have listened to her suggestion. As Christopher Lee quips, “The only thing wrong with “The Gorgon” is the gorgon!”

The name of the Gorgon character is “Megaera”, supposedly taken from mythology. But Megaera (“jealous”) in ancient myth is one of the three Erinyes, or Fates – the goddesses of revenge – not a Gorgon. According to Hesiod, the three Gorgons were Stheno, Euryale, and Medusa.

Prudence Hyman was nearly decapitated for real. She was supposed to duck when Lee swung the sword but forgot to do so at the critical moment. The assistant director pushed her aside just in time. The scene was then redone with a dummy.

Michael Goodliffe who plays Richard Pasco ’s father in this film is only 12 years older than Pasco.

Starring: Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Donald Sutherland, Roy Castle, Alan Freeman, Max Adrian, Michael Gough, Jennifer Jayne, Neil McCallum, Ann Bell, Kenny Lynch

This great review by Alan – all part of my 31 Days of Horror.

Send me your horror film reviews.

One of Amicus’ “portmanteau” films Dr. Terror’s House of Horrors takes the form of five strangers finding themselves sharing a train carriage with the titular Doc (played fantastically by Peter Cushing) who proceeds to use his Tarot deck to tell tales of woe, soon to befall each of the five men.

First up is Jim Dawson, an architect sent to a rich widow’s house in the Hebrides, to make structural changes i.e. she wants a wall knocked down to make one big room. So far, so Location, Location, Location – but all is not as it seems… You may think you are being subtly pointed in a lycanthropic direction by the mists, moon shots and occasional howling. But subtlety is smashed, as swiftly as the offending wall, when Jim is told by creepy caretaker Caleb that he has “unearthed the coffin of Cosmo Valdemar… THE WEREWOLF!” This is probably the most accomplished of the five tales, and the one that could most easily have been a full feature. It’s atmospheric, creepy, features a nice little twist and best of all: a polite werewolf, who knocks before entering a room.

Next to tap the doc’s deck three times is Bill Rogers. He returns home from a family holiday, to find a sinister plant has sprung up in his front garden. When it resists a spot of pruning by screaming, then knocking his shears out of his hand – Bill decides it’s best to go straight to the MOD. Here we meet two botanists: one is nothing but (carnivorous) plant food, the other is played by Bernard Lee (Connery and Moore’s “M”) who turns out to be a pipe smoking, flaming newspaper wielding badass. There then follows some stealthy plant kills and fantastic faux science – Bernard Lee places a leaf of the evil plant under his microscope and declares “A brain! I was right!” This is another great little story with some fantastic lines and leaps of logic.

Third is record breaking Roy Castle *trumpet solo*. He plays musician Biff Bailey in a Voodoo-jazz-tastic tale of the perils of copyright infringement. Biff and his band travel to Tahiti for a gig, and while there he copies down the music of a secret voodoo ritual. Even though the High Priest warns him against bootlegging “the sacred music of the great god Dambellah”, Biff returns home and drops his black magic beats in a swinging London nightspot. Cue… well not very much at all really. A sinister wind blows all the club’s tablecloths onto the floor and everyone concerned acts as if the disco has been decimated. Biff is then tormented by mysterious match needing strangers, bins that appear from nowhere and a fourth wall breaking “Dr. Terror’s House of Horrors” (Certificate X) poster. Even though it is by far the weakest section, “Voodoo” is charming and amusing – from Roy Castle’s Prince Phillip-ian remarks to the ridiculously un-terrifying curse’s consequences.

Christopher Lee’s malicious art-critic (Franklin Marsh) makes the mistake of slamming artist Eric Landor’s efforts and is punished by being tricked into giving an enthusiastic review of a chimpanzee’s painting (I’m not making this up). Marsh responds by running Landor over and, as a result of his injuries, Landor loses his hand. Evidently he is not ambidextrous, as he promptly shoots himself and his disembodied hand sets out to wreak revenge. This is perhaps the nastiest segment, Lee is fantastically vitriolic and the hand effects still hold up surprising well.

Finally, Donald Sutherland plays Bob Carroll who brings home a new wife who seems to have a predilection for the red stuff. When his new Bride hungrily sucks the blood from his nicked pinkie, then turns into a bat and flies out the bedroom window and a local boy starts suffering from acute anaemia, Bob and a fellow Doctor put two and two together and start whittling. Though the bat effect is pretty poor and comes across as a demonic seagull, there’s plenty to enjoy here. The performances are nicely restrained and there’s a killer last line.

Yes, I’ve poked fun at it, but I dearly love Dr. Terror’s House of Horrors. It features some excellent actors (and Roy Castle). It moves along at a swift pace and if you’re not getting much from one of the tales – it’ll make way for another shortly. The range of stories covers lots of bases – you don’t get vampires, werewolves, triffids, voodoo AND avenging hands in one film very often. Plus, it’s British and they even kill the dog!

Twins of Evil is a 1972 horror film by Hammer Film Productions starring Peter Cushing. It is the third film of The Karnstein Trilogy, based on the vampire tale Carmilla by Sheridan Le Fanu. The film has the least resemblance to the novel and adds a witchfinding theme to the vampire story. It is sometimes seen as a prequel to The Vampire Lovers, the first film in the Karnstein Trilogy, as the set design and costumes give the film an 18th Century look and feel. Much of the interest of the film revolves around the contrasting evil and good natures of two beautiful sisters, Frieda and Maria Gellhorn (played by twin Playmates Mary and Madeleine Collinson). Unlike the previous two entries in the series, this film contains only a brief vampire lesbian element.

Harvey Hall is the only actor to appear in all three films of the Karnstein trilogy, although in different roles in each one. Peter Cushing also played one of the leads in the first, The Vampire Lovers, and also Luan Peters, who plays a small role in this film, also appeared in the second film Lust for a Vampire.

The Legend of the 7 Golden Vampires was a 1974 horror film produced by Hammer Studios and Shaw Brothers Studio. Starring Peter Cushing, David Chiang, Julie Ege, and John Forbes-Robertson.

Both Roy Ward Baker, a British director who had helmed several previous Hammer films, and Chang Cheh, a veteran Hong Kong action director, worked on the movie, though only Baker is credited.

The Legend of the 7 Golden Vampires was a co-production with Hong Kong’s Shaw Studio, made in the hope of garnering some of the kung fu movie market share.

The movie was released with various titles in different locations, including The Seven Brothers Meet Dracula and Dracula and the Seven Golden Vampires. It is a clear precursor of the ghost kung fu comedy genre initiated by Sammo Hung some ten years later (Encounters of the Spooky Kind, Mr. Vampire).

The Seven Brothers Meet Dracula version trims twenty minutes of the film’s footage and soundtrack and loops several remaining scenes to fill the running time.
