BERLIN — Rocker Pete Doherty was hauled off stage at a weekend music festival in Germany after he began signing Nazi anthem “Deutschland, Deutschland ueber alles” during his set, reports said on Monday.

Revellers at the on3 festival in Munich booed and shouted at Doherty, but he carried on singing until organisers removed him from the stage, Bavaria’s TZ newspaper reported.

Doherty’s tirade was broadcast live on Bavarian public radio, the festival’s organisers.

“We decided to stop Peter Doherty’s appearance on stage as quickly as possible,” organisers Bayerischer Rundfunk said in a statement.

It is the latest in a long line of controversies for the 30-year-old Babyshambles singer, whose career has been marred by drug use and jail time.

The lines come from the first verse of the “Song of Germany” and this verse was used as the national anthem under the Nazis.

While the verse is not banned in Germany, it has not been sung since World War II because of its close links with Adolf Hitler.

Zijn aantrekkingskracht blijft groot. De romantiek die om Peter Doherty hang is onmogelijk te ontkennen. Zijn voorkomen op het podium, zijn opmerkingen, zijn houding, het heeft iets aanstekelijks. Iets nostalgisch, en tegelijkertijd iets volkomen onschuldigs. De goede man maakte fuore bij de Libertines en later met zijn eigen band, Babyshambles. Dit jaar bracht hij een soloplaat uit, en daar knoopt hij een tour aan vast. Met maar liefst drie data in ons kikkerlandje.

Ik kan het niet helpen. Wederom maakt Doherty indruk op ondergetekende. Het optreden hangt als los zand aan elkaar. Het lijkt of-ie speelt waar hij op dat moment zin in heeft. Tussendoor wordt er rustig op los gepingeld als zat hij thuis op de bank. Er komt een huiskamergevoel bovendrijven in een halfvolle Effenaar. Maar wel Doherty’s huiskamer. Met bruine muren, een kaarsje, gemakkelijke stoelen en heel veel asbakken.

Het blijft een vat vol met goede liedjes. Het komt er niet altijd even lekker uit, maar de schetsjes zijn aanwezig. En ook het prettigst om naar te luisteren. Het beeld van de regenachtige dichter met zijn gitaar en zijn sigaretten blijft in de Effenaar overeind. Rokend als een ketter blaast hij zich door de liedjes heen in de ruim anderhalfuur durende set.

Er valt genoeg op aan te merken. Muzikaal laat-ie de ene steek na de andere vallen. Zijn zang komt niet altijd goed uit de verf, en de twee balletdanseressen lijken zelf ook niet te weten wat ze op dat rotpodium te zoeken hebben. Maar ik kan me het niet anders voorstellen. Het hoort klungelig, en het hoort on-the-go.

Doherty weet een magie in zijn liedjes te bouwen die ik bij geen andere muzikant tegenkom. Misschien is die magie persoonlijk. Misschien hoor ik hem, en verder niemand. Maar ik kan er met volle teugen van genieten. Doherty is een van de meest romantische figuren in de muziek. En, nog belangrijker, hij weet die romantiek als geen ander over te brengen.

Mijn gevoeligheid voor die magie is persoonlijk. Daarom ook geen score voor dit optreden. Wel een link naar gratis te downloaden huiskameropnames. Zie het maar als aanmoediging.

Ja, dat was wat zeg. Gisteravond in de Effenaar. De komst van Pete solo was blijkbaar zo legendarisch dat er een speciaal weblog aan gewijd moest worden. Zijn band Babyshambles heeft ie even op een lager pitje gezet. Maar zijn pyromane neigingen kon hij kennelijk niet onderdrukken, en dus zette hij maar even één van zijn eigen Fuck Forever-shirts in de hens. Zie hieronder het prachtige resultaat:

I started writing a post about the Heineken GreenSpheres gigs there a few months ago, and i never got around to finishing it….but i’m just after spotting a bit of news that has prompted me to finish this long over dude post!

For those that have never heard of it, Heineken GreenSpheres is a series of free gigs that have been take place every few months. It was previously know as the Heineken Green Room Sessions back in the day – I first registered with the site way back in 2003 – won tickets to see Moloko play Trinity Rooms in Limerick, and have great memories from the night!

By registering on the site you’re automatically put into a draw to win free tickets for yourself and two friends to whatever gig is on at the time. Over the past year the likes of Friendly Fires, Casio Kids have played – and coming up this month (15th October) Peter Doherty will be in the Roisin Dubh, Galway.

The next Green Spheres gig has also just been announced ( and reason i’m writing this post!) – Digitialism and the lovely Clink favourite Marina and the Diamonds will play Carlow’s Dinn Ri on 12th November.

Liam called KASABIAN frontman Tom Meighan after the split to say: “It’s over to you, kid.”

He clearly sees the band, who have supported Oasis lately, as the heir to their throne. Noel is also a big fan. So at least the battling brothers agree on one thing.

Tom Meighan is determined to stay neutral after he became close to the pair while supporting Oasis on their latest tour.’It’s not very nice because I’m friends with both Noel and Liam.They’re going to have some time out now to re-evaluate the situation.’

THE KILLERS frontman Brandon Flowers (who’s band formed after an Oasis gig in Las Vegas back in 2001) is urging warring Oasis brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher to put their feud behind them for the sake of their fans.”It’s such a shame. They were a great band, iconic. The brothers should deal with their problems.The ones who pay are the fans.”

Placebo

Placebo is another very productive band, and a highly controversial one. The theme of their music is more R-rated; a lot of songs involve sex and doing drugs. And the band has often been criticized for their excessive lifestyle and Molko, the lead vocalist’s androgynous image. Putting all their issues aside, we’ve got to admit that Placebo after all is a really talented band. Their creativity in using instruments and the unconventional way of songwriting did grant them a very high place in the Britpop world. What they really trying to express in most of their music is a melancholy feeling and a sense of loss and pain. Here is Follow the Cops Back Home from one of their very popular album Meds.

Peter Doherty/The Libertines

Peter Doherty is an English musician. He first came into prominence with the band The Libertines then after join the band Babyshambles. Besides being a very talented songwriter, he is very famous in tabloid for his excessive drug use. We may focus on the band The Libertines to explore the philosophy of Pete. The style of their music can be very independent, yet in a true sense, uniquely English. For the album The Libertines, the band successfully demonstrates a chaotic, careless, and somehow boyish yet melodic style of music. For this reason, The Libertines has often been compared to the legendary British band The Beatles. The song below is a very melodic piece of work called Music When the Lights Go Out in the album The Libertines.

Besides the bands I have named here, there are many more excellent Britpop bands. Like Keane, Radiohead, Suede, Arctic Monkeys and the Arcade Fire from Canada. Some of the key characters you can find in a Britpop band are cynical, liberal, anarchic, chaotic, emotional, and for a few very popular bands (Placebo, Suede etc.), vague in sexuality and excessive drug use. I say they are dreamers, the criticizer of our time. With a guitar, a bass and a set of drums, they write their pains and desires. Somehow it’s like they are not bound in the machinery of our society, that’s why they always can provide a fresh look on the way life is on this planet. May the Britpop continues to thrive and amuses, enlightens, educates all of us.

I’ve been to plenty of gigs at The Academy since I moved to Dublin (one of the highlights being the crazy CSS/MGMT/Futureheads gig last year – i was underneath that stage dive on the video below!), and it’s a venue that never really disappoints.

They have a constant stream of acts playing the main Academy stage, and recently theres been gigs taking place in the slightly smaller Academy 2.

There have been a load of great concerts announced over the last couple of months and recently around Dublin, with alot of them taking place in The Academy. Would love to get to the majority of them, but being pretty broke these days isn’t helping! Still tho I should get to one or two at least.

So here’s my pick of some upcoming gigs taking place over the next few months:

• The Cribs play on Mon 21 Sep, tickets are €22, get them here
• The next night (22nd Sep) sees Hockey take to the stage, tickets are €16, get them here
• Peter Doherty plays Wed 14 Oct, for €26.50 -get tickets here.
• Passion Pit’s rescheduled date from earlier in the year is on Tue 03 Nov, €15.50. Annoyingly its sold out though.
• The excellent La Roux plays on Thu 12 Nov, tickets are €17.50. Buy them here. This is one that i’m going to try get to, i’ve their album constantly playing these days!
• Fred play The Academy 2, on Sat 14 Nov – no details on ticket details yet, will update when I hear.

It’s been far too long since I blogged.  I have terrible writer’s block, and am busy with work and getting ready to move into my first apartment in a week and a half. Yikes. Exciting. Anyways, I had an interesting conversation with my good friend Ryan last night, and I also started reading Bound Together, a very well-written and exciting biography of one of my favorite bands, The Libertines, and all that got me to thinking about why I like them so much. I mean, they’re a good band, but I enjoy them immensely, perhaps more than is warranted by their brand of British rock’n'roll music. I mean, I find immense appeal in the aesthetic and in the lyrics, but it boils down to something that I find is at the heart of my own artistic endeavors: Personism.

Frank O’Hara says this in his Personism: A Manifesto piece (linked above):

Personism has nothing to do with philosophy, it’s all art. It does not have to do with personality or intimacy, far from it! But to give you a vague idea, one of its minimal aspects is to address itself to one person (other than the poet himself), thus evoking overtones of love without destroying love’s life-giving vulgarity, and sustaining the poet’s feelings towards the poem while preventing love from distracting him into feeling about the person. That’s part of Personism. It was founded by me after lunch with LeRoi Jones on August 27, 1959, a day in which I was in love with someone (not Roi, by the way, a blond). I went back to work and wrote a poem for this person. While I was writing it I was realizing that if I wanted to I could use the telephone instead of writing the poem, and so Personism was born. It’s a very exciting movement which will undoubtedly have lots of adherents. It puts the poem squarely between the poet and the person, Lucky Pierre style, and the poem is correspondingly gratified.

As facetious as this is, I find entailed within it a grain of poignant poetics. The idea of people and love being at the center of poetry is one I can get behind. It is not just other people, either; the poet and the person are integral. I consider myself a Personist, if only because I’m a sarcastic bastard and because I care about love, people, and poetry more than anything else…but what does this have to do with the Libertines?

Quite simply, The Libertines are a very Personist band. The lyrics themselves are a testament to this. Carl and Pete are Romantics; they have a vision of an idealized England, and they write about this, the England of Wilde and Blake, of Byron and Shelley, an England of unfettered decadence and artistic revelry…and love. This romanticized vision is obscured by the whole rockstar shtick. Doherty and Barat’s apathetic sneers, sloppy guitars, and drugged-up antics are what we see on the surface. The ballsy swagger the band presents us, though, is an act. Beneath the braggadocio lie vulnerable, hopeful, and loving hearts. Songs like “Death on the Stairs” are proof of this; the anecdotal first part of the song (about the “Eritrean maiden”) and the confessional second part juxtapose the blithe wordplay with the earnest emotion, and what emerges is a tension between the arrogant swagger (“She had a one-track mind and eyes for me”) and the honest, innocent yearning (“how could I help but stare?”) that, to me, strikes the ultimate Personist chord. Love and people are the inspiration for the song, and through necessary abstraction (the facade) the lyrics avoid tainting their pure romantic love for everything from girls to art.

That’s what the Libertines are about. Loving music and loving the Romantic ideal of England that got the guys into music in the first place. And the fact that I love them as people, perhaps, is all the more Personist. Their artistic visions and insane idealism is incredibly appealing to me, as is the facade stemming from a fear of being hurt and a desire to take the world by storm. And Personism, after all, is about just that: people. I love people, and I feel like I KNOW Carl and Pete from listening to their music. This personal connection, to me, makes it great art. There is a definite craft to their music and lyrics that makes it something that is intensely personal and at the same time wildly affected, which is what I see as fundamental to Personism. That is why I consider The Libertines a prime example of what Personism represents…but then again, they could have just called Katie up to let her know they’d miss her. It’s the song that made it poignant and Personist.
