Originally printed Sept. 20th, 2007. Ahhh… haters. I wrote this column after finding out some random sports blog absolutely loathed me, took everything I said seriously and basically threw a lot of bad vibes my way, man. I pretty much printed one of their anti-me rants verbatim in the second letter to the editor. Plenty of gold stuff there… wonder if those guys are still around? I haven’t had a hatah in sutch a long time…

Good morning, hockey fans! Last week we discussed the immediate future of the Western Conference, after touching on the garbage pile of an Eastern Conference the week before. This week, I sat down with Don Cherry and had a very frank and surprising discussion on the existence, purpose and sacrificial requirements of the Hockey Gods — which I was going to post here, but after the past two columns, I was deluged with emails, snail mails, and dead rodents nailed to my doorstep with feces-soaked notes tied tightly around their necks. Apparently, I touched a few East Coast nerves with my portrayals of East Coast teams and their knuckle-dragging mouth-breather fans. So I dipped into the mailbox and came out with these gems, and hope to start a productive one-way dialogue with these tender souls.

Hey, Todd, great column. In fact, it was more than great: your column is the bee’s knees, baby!! As a typical lifelong Flyers fan, I always approach criticism of my team from a position of love and understanding, and thoroughly enjoyed your satirical take on my lifeblood and my on-ice love. I just wish I could write with such informative clarity and hockey wisdom as you. I know you mostly talk about the Stars, but could you occasionally throw in a friendly jab at my Flyers? Hi Bobby, of course I’ve fully aware that the Flyers will dominate the NHL this year. I mean, what self-respecting hockey fan could not look at their impressive 1-9 finish last year, their dead last finish in the overall NHL standings, and the fact that they paid a lot of money for a small number of free agents? As far as sports is concerned, $$$=championships. Who cares that Daniel Briere’s 95 points last year was 30 more than any other season in his career? With all that money in the bank and slower linemates, he’s a stone-cold lock to score 195 points this season! And who’s to say that adding the 32-year old Kimmo won’t be a similar move to Anaheim adding a similarly-old Scott Niedermayer to their d-line? Or that the addition of Kimmo, Scott Hartnell and Scottie Upshall won’t make this team Nashville East? How many Cups did Nashville win with those guys –5, 6? Expect the Flyers to dominate just as dominantly, if not more so.

Hi Todd, love the column, but as a lifelong Devils fan I just don’t see how they’re going to win again this year in the Atlantic. I mean, we lost a bunch of guys to free agency, and the other teams in our conference –especially the Rangers and Penguins– picked up a whole mess of savvy veterans. How can we hope to compete, much less squeak by into first place in the division? –Willy in Hoboken

Great questions, Willy. First off, a little Cardinal Rule of Hockey (courtesy Pat Burns): when you’re winning, hockey is 95% goaltending. When you’re losing, it’s 100%. The Devils have arguably the best, unquestionably one of the top three goalies not just in the NHL, but of all time in Martin Brodeur. And unlike some goaltenders at his age, he actually seems to be getting better with age, posting one of his best seasons yet last year while the team was going through that period of transition. With a group of forwards dedicated to defense and team-over-showiness, this is always a team to be reckoned with when the final standings come in.

Great column, but why are you always picking on the Red Wings? What did they ever do to you? –Chris C., D-Town

Could it be because they are the NHL’s Goldenboys, they never get called for flagrant penalties, they always get the benefit of phantom calls, they play in the weakest league in hockey, their “snipers” are notorious cheapshot artists, their goalie likes to eviscerate opposing forwards’ groins with his shaft, they bought the Cup in 2002 with cold hard ca$$h, they whine to the refs despite getting every call their way, and have employed some of the scuzziest characters (McCarty, LaPointe, Federov) in recent hockey memory? Also, they dress like commies.

Are you ever going to do another column on team theme songs? If so, can I suggest one for the Blackhawks? Tiny Tim’s “Tiptoe Through the Tulips” –Frank in Sheboygan

So for those of you not paying attention the Boston sports scene has fallen a little the past couple months. Not Kansas City bad but still there’s been a dip. The Sox lost in the first round of the playoffs, the Celtics have hit a mini two game skid, the Pats lost a close game on questionable coaching decisions in Indianapolis and now the Bruins have lost three in a row.

The same vaunted Bruins team that many had winning their division and a few had winning their conference have somehow turned into the Bruins team of a few years ago. Why? Well, injuries for starters. After losing Lucic to a broken finger the team almost immediately lost Marc Savard to a broken foot. Thornton has missed games here and there with undisclosed injuries and David Krejci had the Swine Flu.

Needless to say the season hasn’t started the way most of us wanted. But the good news in all of this is that despite losing all this offense, the team hasn’t forgotten how to play defense. The goalies have been standing on their heads and the overall team defense has kicked it up a notch. But a little offensive help wouldn’t be bad.

So my headline says send help and rumors are out there that the great (no sarcasm) GM of the Bruins Peter Chiarelli is on the prowl to get the Bruins some help. The biggest name that’s being floated around is Peter Forsberg. The rumor started at the NHL GM meetings back on the tenth but really not much has been said since. Here’s what Chiarelli had to say:

“I’ve had some discussions with Don Baizley [Forsberg's agent] on him and we had people scouting him last week. It’s something that we certainly would look at exploring.”

Then of course there was the rumor that the Thrashers had attempted to sign Ilya Kovalchuk to a long term deal and he declined the offer. That fuels the speculation that he will be gone before the trading deadline this year. Waiting front and center with more draft picks than they know what to do with? That’s right, your Boston Bruins.

Now Forsberg wouldn’t cost you any picks but he wants to win a Cup. The way the Bruins are playing right now, they don’t look like a Cup contender. He’ll likely go to where his chances to win are better. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him in Detroit (hard to imagine after all the Colorado/Detroit brawls of the late 90’s early 2000’s). They seem to attract veterans looking to win and mix them with their own young guys.

The Kovalchuk trade probably wouldn’t happen until later in the year just because the cap implications the team wouldn’t be able to take on his whole salary without going over the hard cap (paying attention baseball?).

So for now we wait in hockey limbo and hope that somehow the Bruins can snap out of this funk. Getting Lucic back soon and Savard after that will certainly help but one of these other guys may be that push that puts the Bruins over the top.

Vilket lag håller jag på då? Brynäs så klart! Man kan faktiskt hålla på ett lag fast man är fullkomligt ointresserad av sport…om man blir ibankad det redan i småskolan…och hockey är ju lite kul för där blir det ju slagsmål ibland och då vaknar den lilla djävulen till liv i Lena     …och så kan jag bara konstatera att Foppa hade fel tröja på sig…han ska ju ha en svart/gul/röd tröja…kan inte nån tala om det för honom?

The Peter Forsberg saga has been extended one more year. If I didn’t know any better, I would have thought Foppa is making a run at Young and the Restless for the longest running soap opera. Like so many years past, Forsberg has created a buzz about where he will end up. In 2007-2008, he let the buzz drag on till February, when he signed with Colorado. Last season, he led us on until he finally announced that his foot was not healthy enough to play. Now this season, he ended the soap opera early by announcing that he is going to stay with his hometown team in MoDo and try to crack an NHL team next year.

Peter, spare us please. Would you retire already? I think I’ve heard enough about foot injuries. However, since I do not share the same opinion as most hockey fans, I hope all you Foppa fans will enjoy the following video. Hopefully it will hold you over until next year’s drama.

Naumova pārziņā ir nodoti Dinamo un Dinamo Juniors vārtsargi. nu, ļoti svētīgi!

starp citu, Dinamo Juniors vārtsargu deficīta apstākļos uz 11. novembra Dinamo Juniors un Kijevas Sokil spēli Baltkrievijas ekstralīgas ietvaros kā otrais vārtsargs bija pieteikts neviens cits kā Sergejs Naumovs. tiesa, “ziņas” ka junioru vārtos Naumovs arī spēlēja, neatbilst īstenībai. visas 60:00 minūtes Dinamo Juniors vārtus sargāja Nikolajs Žurkovs (skatīt oficiālo “protokolu”).

interesantu ziņu “piespēlē” portāls parsportu.lv, atgādinot Šuplera nestabilo situāciju trenera amatā un minot Glena Henlona kandidatūru līdzās jau iepriekš minētajai versijai par Vladimiru Jurzinovu (jaunāko). cik adekvātas ir šīs versijas, redzēsim / dzirdēsim tuvākajā laikā, kad un ar kādiem panākumiem Dinamo būs atsākuši KHL spēļu ciklu.

Ak Bars

pirmais Gagarina kausa ieguvējs – Ak Bars šogad ir mīkla. šo sezonu Ak Bars uzsāka, maigi izsakoties, ne pārāk veiksmīgi. „daudz laika pavadīts” Austrumu konferences tabulas lejasdaļā, bet pēc 21 spēles Ak Bars ar 30 punktiem ir aizkūlušies līdz 6. vietai konferencē. hokeja ekspertu prognoze – komanda iespēlēsies un tāpat kā Lokomotiv paņems vietu, kas pienākas.

nesen hokeja ziņu vietnes aplidoja ziņa, ka Ak Bars slēgs līgumu ar zviedru hokeja zvaigzni Peteru Forsbergu. taču, cik ātri tas tika ieziņots, tikpat ātri ziņa „nobālēja”, jo gan Ak Bars ieziņoja, ka par to nav pat domājuši, gan Forsbergs izteicās savas hokejista karjeras „būt vai nebūt” sakarā. taču pavisam nesen Ak Bars klubam ir sanācis pārvilināt “mazāka mēroga zvaigzni” – aizsargu Stepanu Zaharčuku no finansiālās grūtībās nonākušās Ladas.

Ak Bars vēsture izskatās gana “biedējoša”. neskaitot pērnsezonas Gagarina kausu un 2. vietu regulārajā čempionātā, Ak Bars ir Krievijas zelta ieguvējs 1998. un 2006. gadā. subrabs – 2000., 2001. un 2007. gados, bet bronza – 2004. gadā. pērnsezon dinamieši no Kazaņas kluba vēstures nenobijās un vienā no divām spēlēm pieveica Ak Bars hokejistus: 2:3 26. oktobrī 2008. Espo (Somijā); 2:0 7. decembrī 2008. izbraukumā Kazaņā.

You know it’s November, when we start playing guess which team Peter Forsberg will play for this year. As always, the Colorado Avalanche are first team to get the rumor mill buzzing. After all, he did help us win two cups, and is one of the greatest fowards in team history.

After Colorado, comes the Flyers, the team who drafted him. After that, it’s the Predators, Canucks (who is probably just floating it out there to get mentioned), Rangers, and some mid-seed teams.
So, I’ve decided, I’m bored enough, let’s kick the dead horse for a little while, shall we?

Where will Forsberg go? Does he stay in Sweden? Will he play in the KHL, or is it time for yet another Forsberg come back?

If he attempts a NHL comeback, here are the top three teams I have a good feeling are at the top of the list.

Why Forsberg Would Sign

This is a good, young team. The young players on Colorado would benifit from a guy like Forsberg, especally Matt Duchene and Ryan O’Reilly. He would probably end up on the second line with Duchene, and that could be something in the neighborhood of amazing, provided the Avs sign a healthy Forsberg. Also, Colorado is playing well right now, but their offense needs a huge boost. Who would be better to provide that, then Foppa? Forsberg could turn this team, who should be fighting for a mid-seed, into a solid playoff team that could end up making noise in the playoffs.

Why Forsberg Won’t Sign

The days of nostaliga are over in ‘Lanche-land. This is a team who has turned the page on the glory years, and are starting to write a new chapter in Avs history. What could be the most attractive thing, could also be the least attractive idea…this is a young team. They will hit walls. Plus, the Avs are now spend-thrifts. If Forsberg asks for the kind of money that is being reported, Colorado will not hesitate to tell Foppa to take a hike.

Why Forsberg Will Sign

The Flyers have an advantage over the Avs, in the fact that the Flyers are legit cup contenders. Just look at that team, they are loaded. Could you imagine Van Riemsdyk playing alongside Forsberg? Could anyone stop them? If Forsberg wants a legit shot at the cup, he’d sign with the Flyers.

Why Forsberg Won’t Sign

The Flyers are so close to their cap celing, there isn’t much room to breathe. Someone would have to be traded away to make room. This would be the only reason why the Flyers wouldn’t go after Forsberg, especally with Gange out long term.

Why Forsberg Will Sign

Again, another legit cup team here. Plus, there is that little thing of playing with arguably the best player in the NHL, Alex Ovechkin. Would you turn down a shot to center a line with Ovie and Semin as your wingers? Yeah, I wouldn’t either. Just the thought of that line is enough to scare anyone out of their wits.

Why Forsberg Won’t Sign

Once again, cap space would be the issue, only if Peter Forsberg wants what is reported (one year/at least four million). Plus, the Caps are still thinking long term, would they stunt one of their young players devolpment just for a cup run?

Given all these factors, where does Peter Forsberg end up?

That’s right, in the end, if Forsberg wants one last cup run, he heads to Washington. He has the best shot at winning the cup, and getting the contract he wants. In the end, he cannot lose with the Caps.

Fram tills nu har de flesta spekulationer rörande Peter Forsberg menat på att de lag som ligger närmst att värva honom är Capitals, Flyers, Avalanche eller möjligtvis Canucks. Även Kazaan i KHL har nämts som möjligt alternativ, något jag tror är helt utanför Forsbergs intressen, även om en övergång dit skulle innebära en hel del slantar. Själv har jag trott att Wahington är det rimligaste alternativet eftersom det är ett lag som har stora chanser att gå hela vägen. Om Caps skulle bli av med Nylander och möjligen Brendan Morrison så finns det också pengar. Nylander har inget i Caps att hämta och en trade skulle frigöra en massa löneutrymme. Även Tom Poti kan var en möjlig kandidat till trade, eller buyout. Flyers däremot kan locka med någon form av dåligt samvete, eftersom Forsberg inte direkt rosade marknaden där senast. Kanske vill han “återbetala” någon form av skuld som han kanske känner att han har mot organisationen. Avalanche är givetvis med i diskussionen av självklara skäl och Canucks (den minst troliga kandidaten) skulle kunna erbjuda en saftig lön.

Men.

Nu är både Chris Drury och Brandon Dubinsky skadade, och efter att Sather redan sagt att Forberg just nu scoutas av Rangers under Karjala Tournament, så blir plötsligt Rangers en intressant kandidat. Och vips, så är vi tillbaka till en dragkamp som kommer att likna den som skedde mellan Canucks och Rangers förra året gällande Mats Sundin. Jag tyckte att det var bra att Sundin hamnade i Canucks och såg egentligen inte hur han skulle kunna förbättrat Rangers. Men vad det gäller Forsberg så är jag inte lika säker. Peter Forsberg är av en annan kaliber än Mats Sundin, han har kvalitéer som – enligt min mening – är av just den typen som Rangers saknar. Han är en spelmotor, en dirigent, något som Rangers inte har just nu, även om Prospal gör sitt bästa och hittils varit en succé. I min mening så skulle Forsberg kunna ta center-positionen mellan Gaborik och Callahan/Lisin, Prospal skulle kunna centra Grachev och Kotalik, Anisimov tar Avery och Lisin/Callahan och Boyle tar Byers och Parenthau/Voros/Brashear. Ekonomiskt så hänger det ju på hur och var man skulle kunna hitta cap-space. Roszival skulle antagligen tvingas sluta, tradas eller skickas på waivers. Voros skulle självklart försvinna, och frågan är om inte Girardi också skulle ligga risigt till. Antagligen behövs det 4-5 miljoner i cap space, minst.

Allt hänger givetvis på hur frisk Foppas fot egentligen är, men frågan är om det inte är värt att försöka få honom även om det finns en risk att han blir skadad. Tänk på det; hur skulle en eventuell skada påverka Rangers? Mitt svar; ingenting. Forsberg har en chans kvar, det står nämligen helt klart att Forsberg skulle ge upp för gott om foten, magen, ljumsken skulle ge upp igen. Detta innebär att han skulle sluta och Rangers inte skulle behöva köpa ut honom. Jag är övertygad om att han har samma Pathos som Näslund när det gäller den situationen. Skulle han verkligen vilja bli ihågkommen som den spelare som en klubb riskerade att köpa in (igen), varpå han inte hedrade klubben genom att vid skada dra sig tillbaka? Nej, inte Foppa.

Jag tror inte att Peter har några som helst problem att komma upp i det tempo som Torts kräver. Jag tror inte heller att han är särskilt mycket sämre rent spelmässigt nu än senast han spelade en hel säsong. Jag tror att Forsberg är en spelare med en enorm grundfysik och skulle han få ett par veckor på sig att bättra på flåset lite och få lite puck-känsla så finns det mycket att hämta. Han skulle definitivt tillföra oerhört mycket mer än Drury offensivt. Även om han spelade på 60-70% så skulle han det.

Hur som helst så innebar förlusten mot Flames (en ganska bra match av Rangers, för övrigt) och de följande skadorna på Dru och Dubi att en Forsberg-affär gick från att vara en Sathersk önskedröm, till att vara en möjlig – om än riskabel – framtid. Undrar om Glen Sather ångrar Drurys kontrakt just nu? Eller Reddens? Eller Roszivals? Eller Higgins?

Peter Forsberg glänste väl inte direkt i torsdagens match mot Tjeckien. Scenförändringen var total mot Ryssland idag. Det var lite av den “gamla” Foppa (fast han var yngre då) vi fick se och det lovar gott inför resten av säsongen. Foppa var klasser bättre idag och det tyckte han själv också. En sån match till av Foppa och han har antagligen kontrakt med en NHL klubb inom några veckor. Snacket om ryska klubbar ger jag inte mycket för. Foppa har redan så mycket pengar att han är ekonomiskt oberoende och jag tror inte att ett antal ryska maffiamiljoner betyder något för honom. Han vill avsluta på topp och spela med och mot de bästa och då heter ligan NHL.

Att Sverige förlorade dagens match får vi leva med. Ryssarna är riktigt jäkla bra och i den här matchen såg man att de gett sig tusan på att göra en rejäl insats.

Tonight the Wachovia Center in Philadelphia will pay host to one of the greatest rivalries in sports, the Philadelphia Flyers will host the Pittsburgh Penguins in their first match up of the season.

The rivalry has always been alive, but was sitting dormant for a couple years as the Flyers found great rivalries with the likes of the Devils and Rangers. Once Sidney Crosby put on a Penguins jersey the rivalry erupted to what it is today.

You can point point the Crosby’s first game in Philly on November 5, 2005. Derian Hatcher made it his goal of the game to end Crosby however he could. This included a scene where Hatcher literally drug Crosby across the ice with his stick. In another scene, Crosby took it upon himself to facewash Peter “The Great” Forsberg. Never a good thing to do when trying to earn respect.

From that day the rivalry has been quicky escalating. I have been to multiple games where the Penguins have entered my home of the Wachovia Center, and I can tell you, I am getting goosebumps right now thinking about it. I have left all of these games with pounding headaches from myself, and everyone around me, screaming so loudly.

Nobody on this earth hates Crosby more than Philly fans. There is booing everytime he touches the puck. “Crosby Sucks!” chants will fill the building. There will also be chants that frankly, I cannot even write in this blog because I would like to keep it PG.

One of the best Flyers-Penguins match-ups I’ve been to was on December 11, 2007. This game included two hat tricks by Joffrey Lupul and R.J. Umberger. The Flyers won the game 8-2. The last 10 or so minutes of the game, Crosby did not play a single shift. Michael Therrien was trying to rest his star player and save him from the tough way the Flyers were playing. Flyers fans were not having any of this. Chants of, “We want Crosby!” filled the building.

Another rivalry to look at tonight is the more personal rivalry between Crosby and Mike Richards. Both young captains are likely to be seen on each others case all night.

The last two post seasons the Flyers have been put out of the playoffs by the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Flyers know they have something to prove and to fight for, especially after being kicked out of the playoffs in the first series last year. The Flyers have started their season 3-0. The Penguins are currently 2-1, the loss coming last night against the Phoenix Coyotes.

That’s right, the Stanley Cup Champion Penguins lost to the ownerless Coyotes. Furthermore, not only did they lose, they were shut out with a final score of 3-0. Expect the Penguins to come into this game with a lot of attitude and determination.

We already know Chris Pronger is ready for Crosby. From day one of being a Flyers, at his press conference, he has already said he plans on being very tough on Crosby. This obviously won the hearts of Flyers fans.

With Blair Betts out and James van Riemsdyk questionable, Riley Cote and Arron Asham may see their first ice time of the season tonight. Have these two tough guys in for this game is exactly what the doctor ordered.

This game will be a grudge match from beginning to end. I would recommend it to any and all hockey fans. GO FLYERS!

I går hade jag så mycket att göra på jobbet, så mycket att jag bestämde mig för att åka hem redan halv tre. Det måste vara det mest underliga man kan göra. Dra när man har väldigt mycket att göra.

Väl hemma skulle jag planera kvällens föräldramöte, ÖPP, planera tysklektion och skriva 30 omdömen. Istället la jag mig på sängen och vaknade först 3 timmar senare. Då var det bara att ta med en text och en överstrykningspenna och fara till Kinnarps arena.

Såg Peter Forsberg göra sin sämsta period genom alla tider. Han var inne på två bakåt mål, 2 utvisningar och en massa gnäll.
Efter pausen då jag han läsa igenom en av texterna tog han sig och klippte in ett så snyggt mål.

STANDPOINT

When it comes to the world of music, I’m in a bit of a shitty spot.

Because, you see, no matter what your particular music inclinations (and I’m sure they’re fantastic), there’s a 73% chance I feel different. Yes. It’s confusing. Let me clarify a bit.

For me, there are only three sects of music listeners out there.

“I don’t care if it’s cool, I just like that song.” – You’re someone who has uttered the previous statement about 9,233 times. You turn on the radio. You hear a song that begs you to drive faster, tap your foot and sing at the top of your lungs. The song ends. Some smooth DJ informs you that the last song was the newest release by Pink, Nickelback or some similarly dreadful source. For about three seconds, you wrestle with the following contradictory facts: (a) you’re relatively sure the artist is somewhat uncool, and (b) you just don’t care because it made you bounce around and sing. If bouncing around and singing in your car is important to you, you’ll likely choose the last option. And, hey, that’s more than all right. Just don’t go around offering up your opinion when the rest of us are talking about what constitutes good music. You’ve eliminated yourself as trustworthy. Sadly, you’re definitely part of the problem. Yes, you’re a fucking moron if you think the new Green Day album is “really good” just because everyone else is listening to it. You either suck at evaluating music or you just don’t care enough to be discerning. Either way, you’re someone who contributes to the MTV culture and that’s just not OK. Ever.

“Even if I’ve listened to a band for years, once I hear one of their songs during a TV commercial, I think they’re shit.” – OK, I get where you’re coming from. You’re an indie rock enthusiast with a chip on your shoulder. You’re absolutely right. But you’re also absolutely wrong. Unfortunately, the music you like is conveying ideals and beliefs that you own, that you share. And it’s not likely these ideals and beliefs have anything to do with “selling out” or being the song employed in the promo for the upcoming season of fucking “Grey’s Anatomy.” It sucks that millions of people (who’ve done nothing but turn on the TV) have discovered one of your favorites songs of the past three years, a song you found because you do the legwork, you’re constantly researching, looking for good music. You’re head’s up. But your head’s also up your ass if you can’t be happy for Vampire Weekend because the guys in that band, while they probably adore playing the smaller artsy venues in front of you and 100 other people, are looking for maximum exposure. And, while it sucks you gotta hear people you know to be moronic talk about how “it’s great when they curse at the beginning of ‘Oxford Comma,’” deal with it. You owe it to those who’ve brought you so many hours of listening pleasure. The main reason you suck is because you make others feel uncomfortable about their choices. And, hey, who the fuck are you?

“What in the good goddamn is wrong with you people?” – Here’s the group I’m in with most of the people I call friends. It takes work to be in this group. You have to constantly adjust your position. But in a quality way.  Most of you out there see things in black and white. And that’s worse than listening to Creed. The world ebbs and flows, and you gotta ebb and flow with it, brother. Just because an artist is making supremely shitty music right now, doesn’t mean it’s gonna be that way forever. People change. Attitudes get readjusted. We all eventually get shown the light. I’m of the personal unpopular opinion one of my favorite bands, R.E.M., will come back around one day and get back to some seriously good business. You probably disagree. That’s cool.  

Here’s the bottom line: Listen to music you like. It’s fine. But you need to understand, no matter which group you fall into, you’re never gonna be completely right. Unless you’re me. Sorry abour your luck.

→ I think Esquire sending someone who knows very little about pop culture to interview Gerard Butler had a great result. As a matter of fact, there’s not much Esquire can do that doesn’t meet with my immediate approval.

→ The LAPD is pretty fucking relentless. Just ask Roman Polanski, who’s been wanted by Los Angeles authorities for over 30 years. He was arrested this past Saturday night in Switzerland. Finally. Seriously, how in the world is the USA supposed to bring anyone to justice if it can’t bring down this guy? Top notch work, everyone. Now, how about you all get back to work on shit that really matters? Thanks.

→ Christ. Peter Forsberg wants back into the NHL. The team on the top of his wishlist? You guessed it, genius. My Philadelphia Flyers. Stay away, Peter. We’ve moved on.

Peter Forsberg är på nytt på alla löpsedlar efter den senaste matchen på Hovet. Här har vi nu alltså en kille som efter bara två spelade matcher i Elitserien tydligen redan är hett villebråd för åtskilliga NHL-klubbar. Det är ju inte klokt. Foppa vet ju inte ens själv om han kommer att spela nästa match, än mindre om han kommer att hålla fram till jul, eller ännu mindre om det blir något OS nästa vår. Karriären kan vara över redan i eftermiddag. Men trots det så vill man redan lura över honom till andra sidan Atlanten. Och vad värre är … om han spelar två matcher till i Elitserien så får han inte spela i NHL i år – pga deras regler. Nog låter detta helt sinnesjukt.

Foppa behöver inte det här, tror jag. Det bästa för honom nu måste väl ända vara att han lugnt och fint koncentrerar sig på MODO och Elitserien – en match i taget. NHL borde, anser jag, nu vara ett avslutat kapitel. Han har inget mer att bevisa “over there”. Och som vi alla vet så blir gamla skador aldrig riktigt läkta, och att åka tillbaka till Nordamerika kommer antagligen bara att sluta i besvikelse, som sist, och med ett nytt långdraget skadehelvete. Sen får man ju fråga sig vad som är fel med att avsluta karriären i MODO? Foppa lämnade som bekant klubben i all hast för NHL-äventyret, och om det är någon klubb han är skyldig något så är det hemmaklubben och definitivt inte Philadelphia eller Denver.

Visst är det helt sanslöst hur Peter Forsberg nu verkar ha fått fart på skridskorna igen. Två mål på två matcher, varav ett (målet idag mot Djurgården) var ett segermål i sudden death! Otroligt, men sant! Såg f.ö. inte själv matchen, men då jag tillhör den skara svenskar som lidit med Foppa genom alla hans skador genom åren så kan jag inte annat än förundras över den minst sagt sagolika inledningen på säsongen han nu fått. Ingen förtjänar lite framgång mer än allas vår Foppa. Tydligen så var han Kung på Hovet idag (seger med 2-1). Hur kan det vara möjligt?

Egentligen så är det inte alls särskilt konstigt, speciellt när man betänker att Peter ännu endast är 36 år gammal – ingen ålder för en hockeyspelare av klass. Han kan mao utan vidare spela på i tio år till om kroppen håller och motivationen inte tryter. Vi känner alla till att vad gäller motivationen så är det inga som helst problem, men vad gäller skadorna så håller vi alla nu tummarna som aldrig förr. Och vi hoppas så klart även att inga busar från några av MODOs motståndare gör något dumt framöver. För den som trycker dit Foppa så att han missar OS blir nog tvungen att fly landet för tid och evighet. OS väntar nu som sagt runt hörnet för Peter, men innan dess så är det många tuffa matcher som ska spelas, bla en del landskamper. Kommer Foppa att palla för trycket? Mitt svar: självklart. Dagen efter premiärförlusten mot Frölunda säger Foppa till Aftonbladet att han inte är nöjd. Detta trots att han lyckades genomföra hela matchen, gjorde ett mål och några läckra passningar. Men Foppa hade aldrig blivit så bra som han varit (och kanske kan bli igen) om han inte haft såna höga krav och en sådan vinnarskalle. Det är väl just strävan efter det perfekta som driver de mest framgångsrika idrottsmännen och kvinnorna oavsett om de heter Björn Borg, Ingemar Stenmark, Gunde Svan, Magdalena Forsberg eller något annat. De nöjer sig inte med 90-95 %. De kan stanna kvar och träna när andra har åkt hem. De kan stå och nöta en liten detalj i timmar om de är övertygade om att det är viktigt att behärska den. De låter inte dåligt väder eller andra yttre omständigheter att hindra dem från att träna. Jag minns att jag läste att Gunde Svan hatade att tävla i regn. Därför tvingade han sig att träna varje gång det regnade och alla andra stannade inne. Efter ett tag hade han ett mentalt övertag på sina konkurrenter genom att han kände att “det här har jag tränat på, det här kan jag, det här är jag bra på” varje gång det regnade en tävlingsdag.

Om foten bara håller tror jag att det är precis denna inställning som kan ta Peter Forsberg tillbaka till toppen igen. Att han inte var ostoppbar igår är ju inte så konstigt. 18 tävlingsmatcher på två år ger inte direkt matchtempo och även toppspelare behöver matcher innan alla beslut sker med ryggmärgen och timingen sitter där. Jämför med Mats Sunding som behövde en månad för att komma igång i Vancouver förra vintern.

Skall bli spännande att se om Foppa hamnar i NHL och i så fall i vilken klubb. Washington, Pittsburg och Philadelfia nämns. Å andra sidan har ju Rangers en tradition att alltid köpa till sig stjärnor som är i slutet av karriären.

Nog var vi alla oerhört intresserade av hur det skulle gå för Peter Forsberg i den senaste comebacken. Foppa fick en kalasstart och gjorde 1-0 för sitt MODO i elitseriepremiären hemma mot Frölunda redan efter fem minuter, men tyvärr så hjälpte inte det, för gästerna var ofina nog att vända på steken och åka hem till västkusten med samtliga poäng i bagaget. Matchen slutade för övrigt 2-4 för hemmalaget. Inte bästa tänkbara upptakt på säsongen mao. Men för alla oss neutrala åskådare så var det ändå oerhört kul att Foppa var med och spelade, för nog drömmer vi alla så smått om att han ska vara med och hjälpa Tre Kronor att försvara OS-guldet i Vancouver om några månader. Personligen så tror jag dock inte att han kommer att hålla ända dit, för han har som vi alla vet haft en sådan otrolig otur med skador de senaste åren. Men vem vet, kanske slår han oss alla med häpnad och avslutar karriären med såväl SM som OS-guld?

Det blev som jag hoppades. Foppas fot höll, ja han gjorde till och med mål, men Frölunda var det starkare laget och vann matchen. Trots en del simpla individuella misstag (nervositet?) såg indianerna ruskigt starka ut och var mer dominerande en vad skottstatistiken visade. Honken såg dessutom stabil ut längst bak – och då jämför jag inte med Malek i Modo kassen.

Men var var publiken? Det är Elitseriepremiär. Hemmaplan. Peter Forsberg gör comeback. Ändå finns det över tusen tomma platser i arenan.

Heart Of  Hockey är kanske bara en tom floskel?
