I have a weakness for birdhouses and these are the best yet…even I could DIY these:)

Fraternal Twins is the name of our new and wonderful installation, opening at the gallery on May 14.  It’s all about how fraternal twins are the same but also different. It’s this   concept of dissonance applied to studio multiples. And in case you get dragged into a discussion about this, you can throw around the word zygosity. It refers to the degree of identicalness between twins.You’ll sound like you almost know what you’re talking about. Another word that might be relevant in this discussion is spooky. As in when identical twins really are so identical that it’s creepy. They would be having a high zygosity. (There, now I’ve used it in a sentence)(You, too, could try this at home). Luckily, fraternal twins while often a bit alike are generally not spooky. I’m relieved to be able to say that since the left twin above is Murray. And that’s Fern, his fraternal twin sister on the right.  Aren’t they adorable?

I found this playful yet very practical piece whilst reading Casa International. Unfortunately the text describing this product was in Chinese. However the image was strong enough to steal my attention. The shape reminds me very much of Peter Marigold’s Split shelving unit, as it works on simple a geometric principle but what distinguishes this product apart (literally) is the element of ‘play’. The fun aspect, squeezing that last book onto the shelve while stretching the cast rubber against the stern machined alluminium pins, helped by the bold ‘engaging’ colours. Sometimes it’s the simple things that have the biggest impact. I love the image (below) showing an array of these shelves dotted across a wall, beautifully displayed. Designed by Pete Oyler who now works in Brooklyn New York, graduated in Furniture Design at Rhode Island School of Design (RISD)  2009.

London born Peter Marigold initially studied Fine Art, specialising in sculpture, at Central St Martins College London before moving on to Product Design at the Royal College of Art studying, under others, Ron Arad.

The Palindrome series was created in response to a brief set by the “Designers of the Future Award” at Design Miami/Art Basel 2009.

The basic element of Palindrome is “mirroring”; specifically Marigold creates a wood mould, fills this with plaster, removes the mould and joins the two halves together.
The result is a product which is not only half plaster and half wood; but in which the two halves are perfect mirrors of one another. Holes become handles, knots become motives, etc…

So far, so art.
And that is what it remains.
Nice concept, wonderfully executed, cleverly responding to the brief.
But it’s art.

For through the process of creating Palindrome Peter Marigold hasn’t provided the world of international furniture design with new processes, new ideas or new perspectives.

Was just at the SCP stand – some excellent new products. In particular the Oscar Sofa by Matthew Hilton and the SUM shelving from Peter Marigold caught our attention.

The sofa is wonderfully firm and  comfortable while the ever extendable and  re-configurable shelving unit SUM is one of those wonderfully simple yet eloquent solutions. Probably a pain to dust, but we think we can live with that.

It’s a shelving system with individual wedges that you put together in the shape you want. (You can make them fill a space or have them freestanding.) Then when you get tired of it, you can shift them and make something else. Hence the name Make/Shift.

Made from a foam-like substance called ARPRO, they’re available in black, white and pink. Get your Make/Shift from Movisi.
