Snowboarding at Bear Valley

I just got back from Lake Tahoe snowboarding!

Because there is a lack of snow in Socal winters, I love snow! Though it’s chilly as anything, I love the thrill of snowsports…from sledding to skiing and snowboarding.

It’s been over 8 years since I bought any new snow gear, though I really want new jacket…in black, gray, or white. Most of the time, I mix and match my gear with my mom and sis since we’re all about the same size so I don’t get bored with my snow outfit. However, when we all go up the mountain, I end up in all blue. In high school, I had this phase where I wanted everything in baby blue…and now, I feel a little silly when I have to wear that outfit. Still, it’s warm, it’s comfy and it still fits!

When I was in Tahoe, I noticed that the people who are really into snow sports have all the proper gear versus the person who just started who usually wears makeshift gear. As long as you’re warm and the clothes protect you from the elements, I think you’re fine. But sometimes, it’s nice to at least have a couple of key pieces.

As a petite, the most difficult part of snow gear shopping is finding the right pants and jacket. It’s easy to look like you’re drowning in your gear since they tend to make the clothes larger to account for additional layers. But, with a bit of research and some patience, you’ll look like you’ve lived on the mountain your whole life without breaking the bank.

So here’s a quick and dirty guide to snow-gear shopping:

The Essentials

Pants: must try the girls or youth sizes because most adult women sizes are too long. It’s manageable when you’re wearing the ski/snowboarding boots, but when you’re wearing your regular shoes…the regular sizes will drag and that’s not cool. I like something simple like these Northface pants and usually the price hovers around $100. Btw, I wear stockings and leggings under the pants for added warmth….long underwear works too. (If you have a real aversion to purchasing ski pants…then wear waterproof pants with really warm long underwear.)

Gloves: girl, youth sizes, or adult sizes are all fine as long as your hands fit in it pretty well and it’s not too large. I go for girl sizes because my hands fit better in them. Just make sure they’re water-proof and they’re easy to slip on and off. These ones from Dakine are solid.

The Semi-Essentials

Jacket: it’s not absolutely essential, but it’s better to have a properly insulated jacket so you don’t have to wear as many layers. I go for the girl sizes because the sleeves are a bit shorter than the adult sizes. Also, kid’s jackets tend to be a bit boxy and not as shapely as the adult women jackets. But this one is perfect for all weather conditions and you could wear it as a regular rain jacket as well. I love jackets that you can wear for multiple weather occasions.

Goggles: it’s not essential either, but they help when the snow conditions change. The adult sizes are pretty large on my face, so youth sizes will have to do. Orange tinted goggles are good for all weather conditions…so you can’t really go wrong with a pair from Oakley. Sunglasses will do for most clear weather conditions, just beware that they may get foggy.

The Non-Essentials

Top: long sleeved shirts, long sleeved turtlenecks, thermals…it all works. You can wear as many layers as you choose. If it’s really chilly, add a thin fleece pullover or sweatshirt. Some people opt for dri-fit style clothing to wick away moisture from your body so you don’t feel sweaty, but it’s personal preference what you’d choose to wear.

Socks: thick socks are a must, but they don’t have to be special snow socks. Make sure that they’re about knee length and they’re warm. If you need to, you can double up if you don’t mind the extra bulk and warmth.

Accessories: neck gaiters, neck warmers, scarves, and beanies are great things if you need additional warmth.

Extra Notes

When it comes to snowboarding equipment, I end up in the kids’ section. I don’t mind, but there are slight differences between kid’s and adult equipment. If you’re planning to own snowboarding equipment, ask what the differences are between the youth and adult sizes. Depending on the brand, the differences can be large or slight…so do your research.

Here are a couple of videos featuring some of my favorite petite artists. My friend once said that if you’re petite and you’re a singer, usually, the bigwigs make you look taller than you actually are…or they make you look super sexy…otherwise, you’ll just look like a little kid. I don’t fully agree, but I do notice the trend when I take a look at these artists.

Oddly enough, it is difficult to tell how tall these artists really are because they’re always wearing heels or they have optical illusions that make them look larger than life. I don’t mind, but it’s disconcerting when you meet them in real life.

Anyways, with these music videos as examples, I’ll be posting up a couple of tips on how to fake your height. If you’re ever on camera or plan to shoot a short film or music video…these might come in handy so you don’t give away how tall or short you might really be.

“Beautiful Liar” – Beyonce and Shakira

Shakira is only 4′11″ and Beyonce is about 5′6″…that’s about a 7 inch difference. If you were to set them side by side, there would be a noticeable difference.

In this video, they do a very good job making both artists about the same height. There are a few scenes where you can definitely tell that Shakira is way shorter, but for the most part, you’d almost believe that they were about the same height.

Tips:

Wear a floor length gown with super high heels or stand on hidden platform

Be in front of the taller person at a diagonal angle

When the other person is bending down, stand straight up

“Video Phone” – Beyonce and Lady Gaga

Another petite collaboration with Beyonce, but this time, it’s Lady Gaga. She’s about 5′1″ and they once again try to make this petite artist about the same height as Beyonce.

I don’t think they did as great a job as in “Beautiful Liar” because in some scenes, Beyonce looks like a giant and Lady Gaga is like a Lilliputian.

Tips:

Shoot 3/4 length of your body

Have the other person wear shorter heels than you

Wear the same outfit as the other person to make it look that the outfits are the same size

“Candyman” – Christina Aguilera

To me, she’s the most vocally talented artist out there today…standing at 5′2.” I love the vintage pinup look that she has going in the video. To combat looking tiny when pitted with backup dangers, she clones herself! That way, all her “other” singers are exactly her height so it makes it harder to tell how tall she really is.

Tips:

Double yourself so you don’t look short

Wear short skirts to show off your “long” legs

Shoot from a lower angle to make you look taller

So the Via Military Coat (size XS) from Victoria Secret came by the other day. I was excited to see

So the Via Military Coat (size XS) from Victoria Secret came by the other day. I was excited to see how the coat would fit on me. It had all the conditions I wanted in a coat: mid-thigh length, a bit of an A-line flare towards the bottom, slim sleeves, and a great color.

When I tried it on…

…it was HUMUNGOUS!

The fit of the coat was bigger than the one from fredflare.com. Even though I loved the style and the overall shape, it did nothing for me. The only good part about the coat was the color and the length, everything else was too wide.

It’s a bit hard to tell from the pictures, but there’s about a 1″ gap in the shoulders. The waist could be taken in over 5″ and the sleeves are maybe 2″ too long. If I took this coat to the tailors, it would be too expensive for me to justify this purchase.

View from the Front

Being short, hemming pants has become a fact of life. Rarely does a pair fit me perfectly in length

Being short, hemming pants has become a fact of life. Rarely does a pair fit me perfectly in length even if it’s “made” for petites.

At the regular tailor shop, it’s usually $10 per hem with additional charge if you want the original hem attached. In Chinatown, I’ve been quoted $5 per hem, which is pretty cheap, but my Chinese isn’t always that great and finding parking is a pain. In the past, my mom would hem my jeans for me, but it’s about time I do it on my own. After all, it’s free and I can finish it whenever I want instead of whenever I’m home (like major holidays and special occasions).

So here’s my quick how-to for hemming jeans. I don’t care for having the original hem, so this tutorial will not discuss adding back the original hem.

By the way, the jeans I’m using for the tutorial is the Rock & Republic “Scorpion” Urban Utility Bootcut Jean in Size 24.

Supplies

1 pair jeans

matching thread of the hem

fabric scissors

sewing machine

ruler

Instructions

Measure amount that you need to cut and cut off with fabric scissors ( I cut off 5″ from the bottom)

Fold jeans over about 1/2″ and use a basic straight stitch (I used a 1/4″ hem because that’s the length of the original hem of R&R jeans) – the orange thread

Fold jeans over again 1/2″ and sew a straight topstitch – the gray thread

Cut off excess thread and iron seams to make sure they are straight.

Done!

I’m 5′3″ 120, but I have probably about five pounds of hair and I’m somewhat muscular, so I appear pretty skinny. I’ll admit it…I’m little!

My mother has called me “little one” for probably my whole life and that’s fine, it’s loving and reminiscent of when I was her tiny baby.

My last boyfriend came in to wake me up and surprise me on my 24th birthday still drunk from the night before (what a gem) and kept saying over and over, “hey little guy, happy birthday little guy, wake up little guy.” And when I asked him if he was still drunk, he said very indignantly, “little guy!” From that day on, I was little guy or LG and he was big guy, or BG…kinda dumb, but the only unique pet names I’ve had in a relationship. Again, “little guy” came out of love (and maybe a bit of JD).

However, recently, the nickname “little one” has caught on at work. It started with one manager, but now multiple managers in different departments call me “little one.” I’m not a fan. Being thought of as a little thing makes me feel like I’m not commanding very much respect.

Earlier this week, I was lamenting via facebook status that my petiteness intereferes with people hearing my message and a good friend of mine (not a tall man, but a man who is definitely listened to when he speaks) told me to always speak as if I was 12 feet tall.

Well, it was a nice thought, but today I tried it and got reprimanded like I was a tween mouthing off to her homeroom teacher. I know I’ve let them think for five months that I’m a small, quiet doormat so I’ve got quite a bit of ground to make up, but this little one is a little more fiesty than she gets credit for and with a little practice and perhaps coaching from my fab friend, soon I will be talking like I’m 12 feet tall!

Looking for a great winter coat…in a color other than black, navy, or gray.

Every year, they always come out with some wonderfully colorful coats, but I never really found one I liked or that fit. The perfect coat should have smaller details like cuffs and collars to go with my smaller stature. I’m really drawn to double breasted styles, but it’d be perfect if it wasn’t. Also, the length should hit mid-thigh because if it was any longer, I’d have to wear it with heels all the time.

This time, I found a coat that I liked and it’s the one Nicole Richie wore. If it was only less than $200 I would’ve bought it by now.

I scoured a bunch of places and few had the styles or the colors I was looking for. It doesn’t have to red…but lately, I’m drawn more towards that color. It just makes the entire winter outfit look more cheery.

First, I tried the BB Dakota Rue Royale coat from fredflare.com in XS.

When I put on the jacket, the sleeves were so long that I had to fold them up twice. The length isn’t terrible with heels, but it could be better. Also, on the model, the cut looks like an empire waist, but on me…it hits right above my waist, but not high enough to be an empire. If I took it to the tailor, I’d have the sleeves slimmed, the body taken in, reduce the flared bottom, and maybe shorten the overall length. Here’s what it looked like on me:

View from the Front

View from the Side

After much thought, I decided to return it and keep looking for the “perfect” coat.

I’ve been eyeing the Via Military Coat from Victoria Secret in XS for a long time. When I wanted to get it, they ran out of XS…but now they restocked it, so I’m checking it out! It’s on its way to my door…and hopefully, it’ll fit better.

But if I really cannot find one…I might have to resort to J.Crew and splurge for this Petite Double-cloth Ingenue Coat.

Anyways, where are some good places to find a nice wool coat for under $200 that would fit a petite?

I call these pendants glass gems because of their gem like beauty. I used clear flat-back glass marbles (about 3/4 inch diameter) and applied pigmented glazes to the back. I selected iridescent jeweled colors for the pigments and I must say the resulting effect is beautiful. The shimmering colors when viewed through the front of the glass are absolutely spectacular! I used Aanraku bails – most have sterling silver-plating, but some have 18K gold-plating. I attached a matching ball chain necklace in either silver or “vintage gold.”

I am sure you would be wondering about some wild French date with a girl. Here is the catch, I am talking about my Physical instructor. Last Monday (30th nov) I joined this amazing gym in Grenoble, and they scheduled a meeting with the physical instructor on Friday (4th dec). Surprisingly, it turns out to be a Petite French girl. Off course, I made my question clear to the goofed up guy at the desk “Why girl, and why to me” … for which he smiled back and said she is has a specialization in physical training.

Indeed, she was knowledgeable and more importantly she speaks English. So this is how I made her quite for some minutes…

“So Sashi, why did you seek my help. What are you looking for”

Well, I will be staying in Grenoble for 5 more months and I was wondering if I can get your suggestions for a 6-pack abs

“Hmmmm” <almost silent for 2 min>

<silent and looking around, looking at the paper…>

Oops! Am I aiming high.

“No I am just thinking about a fitness routine that fits you”, for which I smiled back . The smile remained when she gave the 3-day routine. And then the smile automatically faded off after the 1st day routine….

Yesterday Breanne came over to collect her $20 for the Franklin High School Boosters Tamales I purchased. OMG she’s grown soooooo much. She and her mom proudly announced her doctor guestimated her final height to be 5′6″. She’s 5′5″ now. When did that happen? When I met her she was much shorter than I. Connected to kids.

After our visit, I ran to check the “wall”… you know, the place where you record your child’s height. We actually have a pole, and then after the house was painted, the measuring moved to a wall. It’s Mike’s job to measure Kevin each Christmas. Today, as my ten year old was walking into the school yard, I noticed his new black jeans were floods. When did that happen? I’m extremely curious to see how many inches he’s grown in the past year. Connected to family traditions

I’m not sure when I stopped growing. Probably around 14 or 15? Based upon my vertical challenges, it seems like all the 6th grade girls are taller than me.

Being vertically challenged can present many creative solutions and plenty of laughs. My golf girls have watched me flip off my shoes and tuck my legs under my bottom so that my eyes can see over the board room table. I do the same at our formal dining room table. I stand on a phone book when cooking, sometimes, so that my arm doesn’t have to be held too high when I chop and stir. I still climb up on the counters to get to a high shelf. Sometimes I walk aroundon the counters. What a sight! Connected to the brightside of life.

After last season’s unusual proportions and chunky layers petite women can breathe a sigh of relief;

After last season’s unusual proportions and chunky layers petite women can breathe a sigh of relief; fashions for spring 2007 are much easier for us to wear. Gone are the oversized coats and sweaters and in come slim, neat dresses.

In fact dresses are the big fashion story for next season and for petite women the news is good, for short is the length to be wearing. This is good for two reasons; firstly, shorter skirts are more flattering for smaller frames, as longer skirts will tend to swamp us. Secondly this means that we may be able to buy some mainstream sized clothes. On the catwalk the skirt lengths were often so short that they were barely decent but in reality, lengths are on the knee or just above.

The next good news is that the silhouette is slim and neat for these dresses, in shift or empire line styles, both of which are flattering on the petite frame.

Your summer dress can come in any fabric, so there must be something that suits your taste, from frothy romantic dresses, floral, graphic or ethnic prints (just remember to choose a small motif that will not overpower your delicate frame), shimmering metallics or folksy appliqué and patchwork.

Shoe fashions for Spring/Summer 2007 are also a boon for petite women. If you like to make yourself taller with platforms, heels and wedges, the shops will be full of these styles of shoe. If you prefer to show off your delicate bone structure in a few fine strips of leather, Grecian-style sandals will be this summer’s choice for flat shoes.

Other accessories for this season will not be so easy; the bag of the moment is still oversized, the jewellery big and bold, neither if which are best for smaller women. In this case, just wear the boldest necklace or bag that you can get away with, or head back into your wardrobe for classic styles until accessory fashions turn our way again.

After last season’s unusual proportions and chunky layers petite women can breathe a sigh of relief;

Nicole Is Americas Next Top Models’ first ever Petite Model. She’s a girl that can walk tall with the rest of the runway models although she only stands 5″7′. Like many of the models featured on the show I’m sure she’ll go far and since she’s so short she can easily work the runways as well as commercials.
