In this picture book for ages 4-8, we read about a bright red tow truck that is called to help a school bus in trouble. Along the way the road becomes increasingly difficult, but with perseverance, the red truck saves the day.

The clever use of color in this book helps each character leap out of the page and invites the reader to continue engaging with the story. The red tow truck never gives up even though the road ahead is difficult.

I recommend this story to any kid who loves stories about trucks and helping others. A word of warning to all parents: have a red toy truck on standby! Your child will want to re-enact the story after reading.

Each summer people from around the country come together for the Tri-State Trek. A three-day bicycle ride from Boston to New York, the Trek is a fundraiser to end amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The 270 mile ride is inspiring, challenging and life-changing. It is an event like few others in the world.

After being diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s disease in 2007, police Sgt. Roger Petrone is now rallying community members to participate in an annual bicycle trek that raises money to find a cure for the neuromuscular disorder.

Petrone, 39, of Stamford, has been working over the last few weeks with Mat Mendel, an event coordinator with the ALS Therapy Development Institute, to organize the Tri-State Trek, a bicycle ride from Boston to New York. The ride passes through Greenwich in July before finishing in White Plains.

“He is going to rally up the troops at the police department,” said Mendel, who noted that this year’s race trek plans include shutting down John Street, where riders battle up a large hill near the end of the race. “Greenwich police are going to help us do this.”

Mendel, 35, founded the Tri-State Trek in 2003 with the goal of raising money for the Cambridge, Mass.-based ALS Therapy Development Institute, a nonprofit that seeks to find a cure to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a debilitating and fatal disorder.

Petrone said being involved in an event that helps raise money to find a cure is incredibly important to him.

“I hope they find a cure because a lot of people’s lives are counting on it,” said Petrone. “I think the people trying to find (a cure) are very underfunded and not enough people know about.”

Police Chief David Ridberg said the department is “happy to support fundraising for such a worthy cause.”

Petrone

said the struggles of the disease have been difficult to deal with, but he is still able to function at work, handling cases in the criminal investigations division, and managing his daily routine.

“It’s been very frustrating,” he said. “It made me realize that the simple things we do every day, we take for granted.”

Petrone, who has been with the department for 15 years, said that since he was diagnosed, he has had to adjust to having difficulty speaking and losing some dexterity in his hands.

However, it’s his six-year-old daughter that Petrone is the most concerned about.

“I’m concerned about the effects on her more than whatever happens to me,” said Petrone.

That concern is motivating him to do whatever he can to raise money for a this year’s race, which is scheduled to take place between July 24-26.

Mendel said the trek is seeking riders dedicated enough to commit to the 270-mile ride and the challenging fundraising aspect of participating.

“Each rider is responsible for fundraising $1,800,” said Mendel, who noted that last year’s race raised $400,000 with 185 riders participating. When the event first began in 2003, 30 riders generated $30,000.

“It’s growing considerably,” said Mendel. “I’d say this year we are expecting about 300 bike riders.”

ALS is a progressive disease that attacks the motor neurons in the brain and spinal cord, which, in turn, affect the movement of voluntary muscles. The disorder causes muscle weakness that can alter speech, cause difficulty breathing and decrease movement in the arms and legs. Nearly 5,000 Americans are diagnosed with ALS each year, according to institute statistics.

The majority of patients die from respiratory failure within five years of the onset of symptoms. There is no cure, however, and there are few options for treatment.

The ALS Therapy Development Institute uses biotechnology research to find drug treatments to treat and cure ALS. All of the money generated from the race will go directly toward research, Mendel said.  (Article written by Debra Friedman)

Un certo Petroni (consigliere Cda Rai) non è d’accordo con le mie volontà? Lo faccio fuori!
Un certo Speciale (generale della Guardia di Finanza) non è d’accordo con le mie volontà? Lo faccio fuori!.
Ma lo posso fare? E che importanza ha? Io, spostandoli, ci metto persone mie che mi permettono di fare i miei comodi.
Poi la Giustizia (sempre lenta), con il tempo che la contraddistingue, dirà che io non lo potevo fare. Ma io avrò già fatto i miei comodi.
Così oggi, veniamo a sapere che non spettava al ministro dell’Economia Padoa Schioppa, d’intesa con il presidente del Consiglio Prodi, la revoca del consigliere CdA della Rai Petroni, così come non spettava loro neanche la revoca del generale Speciale.
Qual è la pena? La pena è che lo Statao (noi) dobbiamo versare dei soldi di risarcimento a Petroni e Speciale per le porcate che fa la sinistra quando ha il potere.
Non mi è mai risultato che nessun Di Pietro abbia organizzato un bivacco a Piazza Navona con i vari Grillo, Travaglio, Guzzanti, per gridare alla Dittatura.

SANT’ANASTASIA – Finisce con un pareggio il derby del “De Cicco”, con il Volla che strappa un punto col minimo sforzo. Sono infatti i biancoblu di Santaniello a fare la partita per gli interi 90’, mentre la Virtus aspetta in difesa sperando di sfruttare qualche ripartenza.

Al 1’ lo Stasia passa subito in vantaggio con Coppeto lesto ad insaccare di testa su punizione di capitan Di Costanzo, ma l’arbitro annulla per fuorigioco. Qualche minuto dopo risponde Brancaccio, la sua punizione però impatta sulla barriera. Il ritmo è blando ma è sempre lo Stasia a farsi vedere di più in area avversaria: ci provano Nucci di testa e Milvatti dal limite dell’area, Davino e i suoi difensori riescono a rimediare. I vollesi si affidano ancora ad un calcio piazzato ma Troise non impensierisce Marciano. Ancora anastasiani in attacco con due conclusioni da fuori di Smimma e una mezza girata di Nucci, deboli e fuori misura per cambiare il risultato. Nel secondo tempo lo Stasia riparte più aggressivo ed impegna Davino con un rasoterra di Smimma e soprattutto con una conclusione potente di Milvatti che il portiere vollese riesce a deviare di mano. Al 12’ Leone, servito da Milvatti, manda alto ma si rifà 3’ dopo quando serve Nucci che con un gran tiro porta i suoi in vantaggio. Lo Stasia è padrone del gioco ma non riesce ad incrementare il bottino, così al 28’ nell’unica sortita offensiva il Volla centra il pareggio: Cardone resiste all’avversario, dal fondo crossa basso per Brancaccio che di esterno infila la sfera tra palo e portiere. Gli anastasiani vogliono la vittoria e tornano a spingere in avanti senza trovar fortuna: Lepre angola bene di testa ma Davino blocca e Nucci, a portiere battuto, trova Troise ad allontanare sulla linea di porta. Al 47’ poi occasionissima sprecata: sulla sinistra Milvatti dal fondo cross al centro, velo di Lepre, arriva Coppeto che sotto porta spara alto. La partita termina qui e lo Stasia deve accontentarsi di portare a casa un solo punto.

COMPIACIMENTO DI LUIGI MOTTOLA

Luigi Mottola, assessore del Partito Democratico al Comune di Rapolla, esprime grande soddisfazione per la nomina di Ignazio Petrone, uomo politico di nota esperienza nelle istituzioni locali ed intermedie, a Segretario provinciale del PD di Potenza,  e per l’elezione di Carmine Lombardi, giovane dinamico da tempo impegnato a sostegno delle giovani generazioni lucane, a vice Segretario. Il congresso provinciale apre una pagina importante per il nostro partito, sono sicuro –prosegue Mottola- che Petrone e Lombardi, sapranno ben operare sul territorio per l’interesse del nostro partito e della gente lucana. Il risultato delle nomine al congresso, unitamente a quello del “saggio” e preparatissimo Piero Lacorazza, è l’espressione delle nuove generazioni lucane, e rende noi giovani lucani democratici realmente protagonisti, autori e costruttori del futuro della nostra Regione.

Kristina, se diò un par de chapuzones y volviò del mar como nueva; bueno, tampoco tuvo demasiado desgaste; ya de regreso se dedicò a lo que màs disfruta, inaugurar promesas; ahora es el turno a la Represa Dique  El Bolsòn, en el lìmite entre Catamarca y Santiago del Estero, que segùn estiman los expertos,  demandarà 3 años de obras…

Mientras la Presidenta hace uso del heredado  y todopoderoso AtrilK, el incansable Ex Presidente, sueña con concentrar màs y màs poder. Ahora se diò cuenta de que el Partido es importante; quitar le el sillòn de Rivadavia a Kristina no parece demasiado elegante; harà de los despojos de la vetusta maquinaria del Partido Justicialista su bastiòn desde dònde la Patria toda, al fìn, lo reclame para proezas mayores…

Ustedes se preguntaran por las sospechas de enriquecimiento ilìcito?, no es obstàculo para la marcha arrolladora que lo coloque nuevamente en el lugar de dònde jamàs tendrìa que haber partido. Ciertos rumores infundados, por supuesto, se arriesgan a afirmar que se ha transformado en un “Presidente en las Sombras”…Como no podrìa ser de otra manera ya se especula con aquella vieja sentencia peronista setentista aggiornada: “Cristina al gobierno, Néstor al poder“; el sòlo hecho que el Ministro de Justicia, Anibal Fernàndez, se haya apresurado en desmentir la especie, no hace màs que corroborar, que la idea ronda en màs de una cabezita afiebrada cercana al exitoso nuevo mnultimillonario ex Gobernador de la sureña Santa Cruz…

Mientras en el seno de la famiglia Kirchner se discute por las cuotas partes de poder a distribuir, el Senado, dòcil como un gatito siamès, se prepara para aprobar la designaciòn del Juez Daniel Petrone, de aceitada relaciòn con el Procurador General de La Naciòn, Esteban Righi.  Casualmente, al poco de asumir, Kristina firmò el Pliego de Petrone quien irà a ocupar la vacante de la titularidad del Juzgado en lo Penal Econòmico Nº2 que, otra vez la casualidad, se harà cargo del Caso de las Valijas Bolivarianas, que actualmente subroga la Jueza Marìa Marta Novatti…

Por supuesto que èsto no quiere decir que el nuevo Juez vaya a actuar parcialmente, el cielo no lo permita, simplemente, los astros parecen estar alineados definitivamente en favor del Matrimonio Presidencial…Viva la Patria!!!

Le Sophos Tour est une histoire qui fêtera ses 10 ans en 2009 alors que je serai sur les routes du monde.

Tout a commencé sur les bancs forcément froids des cours de Latin de ma période lycéenne lorsque je partageais le dernier rang avec Couilles Flappies Clément et Janeke le Belge.
Nous étions tous trois des cancres linguistiques motivés par la culture romaine. Les petits détails étranges des textes que étudions nous tiraient aussi bien de notre léthargie que les pantalons en cuir moulant que portaient quelques fois notre prof(e).
Parmi ceux-là (les détails), nous avons été marqués par un début d’extrait du Satyricon de Pétrone : ‘Sophos !’ universi clamamus (Pétrone 40,1), ce qui peut se traduire par “Super ! s’écrions-nous tous”.
Cet extrait rentrait en résonance avec l’actualité relativement récente sur le franglais.
Il nous a marqué et lorsqu’il a fallu nommer des initiatives que nous prenions, nous trouvions le qualificatif ‘Sophos’ adéquat (par facilité et par snobisme).
C’est ainsi que lorsque nous avons commencé à organiser notre tour de Bretagne en vélo en 1999 avec Janeke et Vincent son frère, nous l’avons baptisé Sophos Tour. Cette première expérience a fait des petits chaque année (ou presque) et une quinzaine de personnes ont pu partager notre expérience.

Je n’ai pas appris la géométrie, la philologie et autres futilités absurdes, mais je sais lire les inscriptions lapidaires, je peux dire le centième selon le métal, le poids ou la somme. En somme, si tu veux, faisons une gageure, toi et moi, je te laisse le choix. Et bientôt tu sauras que ton père a perdu son argent avec toi, quand bien même tu connais la rhétorique.
