If you checked out this post this past summer, then you’ve already seen the trailer for the upcoming Legend of Zelda game for the Nintendo DS. Entitled ‘Spirit Tracks’, its development and release were very hush-hush. But fortunately, Nintendo has thrown away the veil and given out some more details on the hotly-anticipated adventure!

In my humble opinion, the most interesting new piece of information is definitely the player’s ability to control the eponymous Princess Zelda, who is transformed into a Spirit and can use her new powers to control some of the villains Link faces. It’s a very cool addition to the plot and should add a new twist to the franchise.

You can watch an updated trailer here to see what ’s being brought to the newly revised land of Hyrule.

And if you’re really itching for the new game, we might be able to tide you over with a pretty decent selection of figures and toys from The Legend of Zelda section of CmdStore.com.

And for those just looking to get their hands on some of the previous LoZ adventures or pre-order the new one, Amazon.com’s got what you need.

Today I beat Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass for the first time. I was motivated after seeing that recent trailer for Spirit Tracks the other day. This was actually my second attempt at beating the game, but it stopped at the same place: right before the last time entering the Temple of the Ocean King, aka that place that you have to go through TEN MILLION TIMES and it doesn’t change at all. Although I have yet to 100% the game (that’ll come soon now that I’ve beaten it), I feel I can now offer a full opinion on the game. Be warned! Thar be spoilers ahead on these waters:

Well, it’s not so amazing. It falls into the classic Zelda trope of, “Get item in dungeon. Use item in dungeon on boss. Put item away and never use again.” Although, Phantom Hourglass is mostly good about reusing items. The boomerang always got some pretty good use, and I have to admit I got some mileage from the grappling hook as well. But I don’t ever recall having to use the bombchus more than ten times outside of the initial dungeon.

But that’s not the main problem I have. My problem is that the game is just laughably easy. There wasn’t a single point where I felt that my hand wasn’t being held by the game designers. Maybe they thought the target demographic was different on the handheld console. I don’t know. Either way, I felt that too many things were just handed over to me. Show me the treasure chests in every floor of every dungeon for only 20 rupees? How can I refuse? And the final boss was a piece of cake, unfortunately (side note: Bellum? what an awful name. “Hey guys, let’s take the Latin word for war and not disguise it at all!”).

Aside from that one major complaints and a couple minor ones, I still felt that Phantom Hourglass was a good game. It had some good variety in it, brought some new things to the Zelda table, and was an okay sequel to my favorite Zelda game (yes, that’s right). BUT THE TEMPLE OF THE OCEAN KING. Once is enough. Maybe twice. But no. You’re forced through the same thing 5 times. It’s awful. But enough about that. It’s time to move on to rant Part II.

I think the Zelda series is getting stale. With Mario, you can have new levels and you don’t even need to change the formula around, because that’s just the nature of a platform game. But I think Twilight Princess and now Phantom Hourglass illustrate that without a really strong gimmick they can’t really stand out as Zelda games. Link to the Past had the Dark World. Ocarina of Time had time travel. Majora’s Mask had the masks. Minish Cap had shrinking. The wolf in Twilight Princess just wasn’t used well enough to make it interesting. The Phantom Hourglass itself isn’t really notable enough to be a major gimmick. I think Nintendo realizes this fact though, and I hope that Spirit Tracks and Zelda Wii are more than, “Well, Ocarina of Time was really good, let’s try and do that again.”

Just throwing out a bunch of thoughts: There´s no hype for The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks becaus

Just throwing out a bunch of thoughts: There´s no hype for The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks because it is the sequel to Phantom Hourglass. Even though a lot of fans wore their rose-tinted glasses at first, now you´ll find that there´s many fans, if not a majority, that found Phantom Hourglass to be lacking. In more than just one or two areas. To name only a few, it didn´t have an exploration-inviting overworld, all NPCs were horrible, detached from any kind of development, thus resulting in Captain Lineback being praised, when he was the only “okay” character, and nothing great either. The infamous main-dungeon that had to be repeated several times under time pressure also did its best to beat down any player´s motivation, and then you had those lousy Styulus-controls that worked for puzzles, but made controlling Link himself a hassle, feeling like you´re baiting some kind of puppet instead of actually controlling someone. The fact that all dungeons felt like a Zelda-textures Dr. Kawashima and had horrible themes (Egyptian Pyramids, in a Zelda-game, really?!?) gave it the rest. Oh, and forgot the awful sailing, or rather “motor-boating”, that had you permanently defending against silly enemies that appeared randomly. Three hits and you had to start it all over, too. Gone the days where you could just peacefully sail in The Windwaker.

Spirit Tracks looks exactly like the above game, except you switch the boat with a train, and add some gimmicky game-mechanics.

On another note, I´d really like to see a remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. There are two kinds of people I often see writing about the Zelda-series: They either think that Twilight Princess already is an OoT-remake, OR they think that OoT by nowadays standards wasn´t a great game anymore. It´s my honest belief that both those statements are fundamentally wrong.

Whereas Twilight Princess (unfortunately) features are very linear, very cinematic structure, Ocarina of Time was a lot more like the open world-Zelda NES. Of course, not exactly as open-world, but compared to Twilight Princess? Day and Night. There may be thematic similarities, but the whole atmosphere, feel and ingame progression are totally different…in favor of Ocarina of Time. And: If you´d upgrade OoT´s visuals to today´s standards (be it like Twilight Princess or some kind of HD-remake on a possible next Nintendo-system), the game would still kick every other adventure-game´s ass. Thinking of the forest- or spirit-temple alone make me start drooling. Oh, and one thing I must not forget: OoT´s soundtrack. To this day, it is the best video game soundtrack ever having been created. There may be individual songs from other games that are great as well, but in OoT..EVERY SINGLE SONG IS MEMORABLE. Just five minutes ago I debated with myself if I could remember something unimportant as the shop-melody…and then there it was. If “but it´s midi!!!11″ is your counterargument, then just listen to one of the many orchestrated versions of the soundtrack. Not that it matters, because OoT´s soundtrack is great no matter if midi or not, it´s the fantastic melodies that make it so unforgettable.

Nostalgia is often a problem, but when it comes to Ocarina of Time, it is definitely not.

Old mock-up for a rumored Ocarina of Time-remake

I had to happen when Nintendo DS came out that another Zelda game needed to be released. With the popularity of the other 13 Zelda games that have been made, Nintendo has proven that the Link adventures are not over. In The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, you have a different set up than you are normally used to. The game continues from when The Wind Waker left off. With the sequel adding to the suspense it is your duty to find all the hidden gems to rescue the friend of Link and get back to the normal operation of things.

In The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, your game play is different. Not only do you have one screen to focus on, you have two! The great thing about the new game is that its introduction allows people who are just starting with the Zelda saga to not feel left out. There are many different levels and strategies to discover in the new installment of the Zelda series that will entertain you for many hours. In The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, Link has only moments to survive and only with the help of the Phantom Hourglass will he be able to survive!

Throughout the mini-games, you will be able to play a game which you have to collect force gems. You don’t want to get caught as in every Zelda game. You take each force gems back to your base. Similar to capture the flag, it works the same. You have the top screen to monitor your progress that you have made thus far. With the help of the top screen, you can see where the remaining force gems are and where the enemies are you need to avoid. These mini games are filled with different challenging moments, but with the right amount of time and effort, you will be able to get to the end result.

The game continues from where the first chapter left off and Link has to save his friend Tetra, which is actually Princess Zelda. With the help of many different characters, you will be able to get to the main end and be able to rescue your friend from the evil clutches of Bellum. With the many different strategies that you will find throughout the game, you won’t have a moment of boredom. As of all Zelda games, it is your responsibly to rescue Zelda from the evil clutches of danger.

I really admire him from the bottom of my heart and look up to him. Captain Linebeck was the Captain of a ship, the S. S. Linebeck. Link and Ciela the fairy traveled the Great Sea on the S. S. Linebeck with Captain Linebeck’s help to save Tetra who was abducted by the Ghost Ship in The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass. Linebeck was a coward with no courage at all, and the only reason why he helped Link and Ciela to find the Ghost Ship was to get the treasure that he thought was on it. Treasure was the only thing that was on Captain Linebeck’s mind. But with time you will see how Linebeck is the greatest man ever, someone with a funny and free soul, someone with incomparable courage, someone who doesn’t want anything more than adventure, discovery and exploration on the great open sea. I really respect him, and it’s been a great pleasure knowing him and having this unbelievable adventure with him. I hope I get to see him again soon, because I have yet to see someone as great as Captain Linebeck.

Well the 1.4U update was awesome until i ran out of pictures to upload to facebook. I think they should of allowed uploading pictures to more sites maybe in the future.

Also im hoping for the best tomorrow and maybe Flipnote Studio will finally come out. If it doesn’t maybe next week. Uhh how annoying it is to not know a release date. Maybe some good Virtual Console games will come out giving me some reason to buy those 2,000 points I didn’t get 3 weeks ago or something.

Tomorrow and a little bit of today I’m going to see how long it will take to pass all the Legend of Zelda games. I’m just going to check the time I begin and the time I stop. This might be actually take me a while since i never actually beat Zelda I or II. I might add Link To The Pass if I get some Nintendo Points tomorrow.

I must admit that the first time I saw someone playing a Legend Of Zelda video game, then playe

I must admit that the first time I saw someone playing a Legend Of Zelda video game, then played it myself, I was taken in.

Taken in by the fun game play, collecting rupees, exploring dungeon after dungeon, defeating the villains or boss monsters, rescuing in game characters and ultimately, Princess Zelda, herself.

One Legend Of Zelda game after another, it never got old or boring. There were times that I did get tired of going to the Temple Of The Ocean King in LOZ, Phantom Hourglass though.

But not even that discouraged me from wanting to press on and finish the game that is now high on my list of the Legend Of Zelda video games.

And by the time it was all over, I got used to travelling with Link on that ship. I wanted more. I wished there was perhaps one more dungeon to explore or more treasures to find with the crane.

My suspense is probably about to come to an end. For when I first heard of another Legend Of Zelda game for the Nintendo DS, I was so surprised I took to doing a little research.

And yes, there is another Legend Of Zelda video game coming out for the Nintendo DS. This one, as many of you LOZ fans already know of, is titled: Legend Of Zelda Spirit Tracks.

Although it sort of picks up from where Phantom Hourglass ended, this time Link is on dry land and is travelling around on a train.

He is not alone though. Remember the Phantoms from Temple Of The Ocean King? One of them is with Link in a more, shall we say, helpful capacity.

From what I can deduce, so far, he, the Phantom, helps Link solve puzzles and so on. For example, the Phantom might stand on one switch while Link is on another which triggers a locked door to open etc.

I can hardly wait to play LOZ Spirit Tracks which is due out in December 2009 or later this year.

It will certainly be a different departure from seeing Link washed up on shore or traversing the LOZ video game world by ship.

Or maybe there’s just something about trains that sound kind of adventurous.

While the Nintendo DSi is a worthy purchase for anyone who has yet to upgrade from the original DS

While the Nintendo DSi is a worthy purchase for anyone who has yet to upgrade from the original DS “Phat”’s outdated size and appearance, the handheld’s new features are either shallow or have yet to reach even a fraction of their full potential. Most disappointing of all is the lazy recycling of older games, which comprises majority of the current DSiWare offerings as “express” titles.

The DSi’s two cameras are the handheld’s most obvious new features. It’s doubtful anyone expected the cameras to be very powerful, but the DSi’s built-in camera software doesn’t amount to much more than a modern day GameBoy Camera in color without the charm or timliness. It’s fun for a few hours, and your friends and family will get a kick out of making each other look like hideous mutants, but you won’t find yourself throwing away your digital camera anytime soon.

The more exciting prospect of the DSi’s cameras is its gameplay applications, but the only game that actually takes advantage of this application isWario Ware: Snapped, which is just as shallow as the camera software itself. In the download, you play the typical micro-games you would expect, but you use your hands and face through the camera to get things done. The slide shows of your awkward expressions and poses that are displayed after you finish a series of micro-games can be fun to watch, but you can experience all the game has to offer in less than hour, that is, if you can get the camera to recognize you.

Like the camera software, Snapped can be a fun way to introduce the handheld to friends and family, but the poor feature recognition doesn’t bode well for DSi exclusive games. The DSi’s sound editing software is equally appealing and shallow as well.

It would have been nice if the DSi could have served as practical recording device for college students or young journalists, but as it is, the handheld’s sound recording and editing software is nothing more than a sophisticated Yak Bak. You can make ten second recordings and edit them by changing the speed or pitch, reversing the sound, or by applying different effects.

You can also import songs onto the system via an SD card and play them normally or make temporary edits. There are various audio displays that play along with the music, with some similar to those you’d see in Windows Media Players and others that make references to video games like Super Mario Bros. and Excite Bike.

The DSi can serve as a convenient MP3 player if you’re without an iPod or any other decent music player, but the editing software isn’t much more than a cheap and temporary gimmick.

It may be a bit early to judge, but the lazy recycling of older DS games is the DSi’s biggest disappointment considering the DSi Ware download service is exclusive to the latest version of the handheld. “Express” in a game’s title impies not only that the download is from a previously released title, but that the download is only a fraction of the original game. The worst offender of this series of downloads is the Master of Illusion series. They’re cheap at two bucks a pop, but the concept of buying individual magic tricks once a week when you could just buy the full title comes off as an extremely lazy use of the DSi Ware service.

Hopefully, DSi Ware will see the similar downloadable gems like World of Goo and Mega Man 9 on the Wii Ware service, but without any amazing launch titles like Lost Winds, it’s hard to be impressed with DSi Ware right now.

Another disappointment, and a curious one, is the DSi’s absence of a GameBoy Advance slot. The GBA platform is dead, but its library is huge and even contained a few games that can interact with DS games.

The GameBoy Micro is still readily available online for about $100 and is certainly the most stylish option for a DSi owner wanting to enjoy his back catalog of GBA games, but it’s disappointing Nintendo couldn’t find a way to work a GBA slot into the DSi.

Finally, it’s diappointing the biggest title to be released along side the DSi was Rhythm Heaven. If the demo on the Nintendo Channel is any indication, the game is fun but not very substantial. The release of a new DS model should have been accompanied by a title in the vein of New Super Mario Bros. or Phantom Hourglass, not mini-games with added touch controls. It’s great that the game has finally made its way outside of Japan, but it was a let down to take home the DSi and have nothing new to play other than some mini-games once the handheld’s gimmicks got stale.

One plus for the DSi other than its improved appearance and visuals is a new, faster version of the Opera internet browser. The download is free, and the browser actually runs at a decent speed. It still can’t stream videos, but the browser is great for short sessions when you don’t feel like breaking out your laptop.

If you’re still struggling with the decision of to buy or not to buy, you’re better off waiting. There won’t be a price drop anytime soon, but with the DSi’s picture and sound apps serving as only minor distractions and no killer DSi Ware games on the horizon, you’re better off saving your money for now. Chances are, you’ll be rewarded for your patience with a broader spectrum of colors to choose from.

Nunca fui.

Aproveite.

I didn’t do a whole lot of knitting today. For some reason, I just wasn’t in the mood. After the brunch with my extended family (which was lovely as usual) we did the laundry and I started playing Legend of Zelda: The Phantom Hourglass on my DS. I got this game a long time ago and played a little over half of it, then got heavily distracted by wedding planning and finishing college and never progressed any farther. I started a new game tonight, since I’ve basically forgotten everything at this point.

It’s a great little game. I like the controls better with the stylus than I ever did on other Zelda games on other consoles, it feels more intuitive for me. The plot is good, too, though some of the puzzles are annoying as heck. The main issue is this temple, where the ground saps your life as you walk on it… and the corridors are guarded by unkillable enemies. It’s one big annoying puzzle, basically, and you have to go through it 4 or 5 times, each time going in further. Not looking forward to doing that again. Oh, and did I mention… you only get a little bit of time to do it? The first run you only have 10 minutes to do three large puzzles, one of which is a three-parter with a twist at the end. Geh.

Other than that, I’m slowly working on my Baudelaires (which, let me say, I have cleaned considerably since the photos in the previous post were taken- no more cat hair city!) and still going on the secret project. I’m looking forward to this week- the project will at least move along, if not come out of hiding, and Weds is the first day of the Tea Garden craft group (though a couple of people won’t be coming, so it may end up as just a few of us this time, we’ll see). Should be a good week!

In addition to my other Chasing Carts project, I am also working on a complete-in-box Zelda set. This one is going to be a bitch because nearly every Zelda game has two variants. Most come in their original release as well as a second run “classic series”, or “million seller” release. The Nintendo 64 games, for instance, where released in “collector’s edition” copies that went with pre-orders and than were later released in a second form (a grey cart for Ocarina of Time and a holograph-free gold cart for Major’s Mask).

All of the games I need are pretty reasonably priced, as they tend not to be more than $50. But I need quite a few, and that can add up. Thankfully I have a pretty good head start:

The Legend of Zelda (NES), The Adventure of Link (NES), Hyrule Fantasy: Za Hairaru Fantajī Zeruda no Densetsu (FC), The Legend of Zelda: The Oracle of Seasons (GBC), and The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass (DS).

The Legend of Zelda: Collector’s Edition (GCN), The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time / Master Quest (GCN), The Legend of Zelda: The Four Sword Adventure (GCN), The Legend of Zelda: Windwaker (GCN), The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (Wii)

Zelda no Densetsu: Kamigami no Triforce (SFC), The Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time (N64), The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (SNES).

The way I see it I have the most ground to make up in the hand-held department. Luckily for me none of these games are rare and they can all be found in abundance online and around town as long as you are willing to play the inflated prices that comes with their popularity.

Over the weekend I got an amazing deal on Ebay for two of the games I need, but I’ll wait until they come so I can post pictures.

I decided to make a regular ‘feature’ on this blog to make sure that I write more often. Basically this is how it works. Every now and then, I’ll pick some movies or games (more often games) and I’ll quickly criticise it in a short sentence. Let’s begin! For my first one, I’ll choose five.

The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass – Timer plus stealth plus repetition equals the worst level imaginable!

Half-Life 2 – I hate headcrabs. I know thats not really criticising it and this is a second sentence but I really f%&*ing hate headcrabs!

Burnout Paradise – Crashing hurts.

Final Fantasy IV – The Active Time Battle system is a bad idea and has always been bad!

Die Hard 4.0 – It’s just a smidge over the top!
